It is generally acknowledged that the head grade of the world’s copper resources is declining. Accordingly, there is an increase in the volume of resource material being mined and processed to maintain copper production. This has led to increases in cost base accompanied by reductions in Life of Mine (LOM) Net Present Value (NPV). The higher tonnages of material mined are driven by increased quantities of lower grade material required to satisfy the short term mine model. In turn, this has brought an increased focus on sampling and assay methods, since any error associated with estimating the grade of each block and determining its correct destination serves to magnify the losses that will occur. Presently most open-pit copper mining operations use blasthole sample assays to feed their shortterm model. The problematic nature of blasthole sampling is well documented (Engström, 2017), particularly the poor timeliness of the data and the significant errors that are inherent to the technique. Methods to improve grade control, such as drilling a separate grade control grid, have been proposed but come with their own cost, logistical, and accuracy shortcomings. A recent development in grade estimation is the Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) downhole logging probe. Deployed on an efficient semi-autonomous platform, PFTNA is being aggressively adopted in the Australian iron ore industry. The technology provides in-situ elemental analysis of the geological formation, delivering high accuracy, high efficiency, near realtime data from a sizeable measurement volume. In this paper we consider the application of the technology to copper. Whilst there are several operational components to such a value proposition, we focus on the benefits of improved gradeestimation. A simulated copper mine is used to model the quantum of improvement expected from a reduced grade-estimation error, which reduces the likelihood of misallocating material to the wrong destination, which in turn increases NPV.

"AKITA ZINC Co., Ltd. (Iijima Zinc Refinery), jointly owned by DOWA METALS & MINING Co., Ltd.(DMM), has used the company’s own hematite process for iron control since the beginning of operations in 1971. The hematite process consists of reductive leaching with SO2 gas and iron removal in autoclaves by high temperature hydrolysis. This process enhances not only zinc recovery but also the recovery of gold, silver, copper, lead and rare metals, which is carried out at another DOWA metallurgical plant. All by-products produced in the hematite process are marketed and sold. This paper presents an overview of the hematite process and the recent process improvements made.INTRODUCTION DMM carries out mining and smelting activities for precious metals, PGMs, rare metals and base metals such as copper, lead and zinc. It owns KOSAKA SMELTING & REFINING, producing copper and lead, and the AKITA ZINC Co., Ltd. (AZC) in Akita Prefecture. DOWA is a specialized smelting company which has established a metallurgical complex for copper, lead and zinc, including a recycling business. AZC was established in 1971 at a production capacity of 72,000 t/y zinc; it is jointly owned by DMM and five other non-ferrous metal companies. AZC has increased its capacity continuously and now produces 210,000 t/y of zinc. Figure 1 shows the changes in zinc production and capacity at AZC."

Batch flotation tests were carried out using samples from stockpiles that were up to 1.5 months old as well as fresh samples oxidized in the lab for up to six months. Head grades and size distributions of samples were equalized whenever possible. The samples from stockpiles and oxidation experiments produced inferior nickel grade-recovery compared to the fresh sample. The poorer grade-recovery performance was attributable to two factors. First, a significant dilution effect was observed due to complete flotation of pyrrhotite. Secondly, the same stockpiling conditions caused nickel losses that were attributable to non-floatability of some pentlandite. Application of a high pH of 10 compared to the regular pH of 9.2 slowed down pyrrhotite flotation kinetics, but was not able to prevent complete flotation after 8 minutes. The samples oxidized in the lab did not match full characteristics of stockpile samples. They provided somewhat better selectivity for pentlandite. Some correlations were observed on a qualitative basis between surface characteristics such as elemental sulphur formation, activation and flotation behaviour. Oxidation conditions, which induce floatability on pyrrhotite while causing incremental loss in pentlandite floatability appear to be the root cause of difficulties in the processing of oxidized forms of these ores.

AT THE Belmont mill, the pregnant solution is de¬livered to a 30 by 10-ft. tank, from which it is pumped to three Merrill clarifying presses of the sluice-bar type, whence it flows through the meter to the precipitation supply tank. ?The solution for precipitation is pumped by a 10 by 10-in. Aldrich triplex pump and delivered through a 6-in. line to the forty-eight triangular frame Merrill presses at the head of the mill. Zinc dust is fed in at the pump suction and the solution precipitated to 0.01 to 0.02 oz. silver. The solution flowing from the presses is tested at 1-hr. intervals with sodium sulfide. All solution is precipitated to the same value; 4J tons of solution are precipitated for each ton of ore treated and the presses are cleaned every 15 days. The product from the presses' is dumped into steel cars having steam-jacketed bottoms, in which they are dried until the moisture content is between 15 and 17 per cent. when 8. per cent. of soda and .3 per cent. of borax are added and the contents thoroughly mixed. In the case of special clean-ups, the precipitate is tested and the flux is added to meet the requirements.

We have obtained by computer methods the solutions of the Taylor analysis1 for axisymmetric flow in bcc metals. Four modes of slip have been treated in detail:2-4 (111), {112}(111), {123}( 111), and a mixture of all three. In addition to obtaining anisotropy of strength data for randomly oriented or textured polycrystalline material,4 we have also obtained the lattice rotation resulting from slip on the predicted systems. The patterns of lattice rotation are essential to an improved understanding of texture development during deformation. The present note shows the results of lattice rotation for 5 pct axisymmetric compression, for fifty-two axial orientations distributed at 5-deg intervals throughout the standard stereographic triangle. The data are presented in Figs. 1 to 4 for the four modes of slip. The lattice rotation is indicated by a vector, the ends of which correspond to the positions before and after the deformation. The different vectors emanated from a given orientation represent different combinations of five slip systems that satisfy Taylor&apos;s minimum shear criterion.&apos; Fig. 1 shows the results for {110}< 111> slip. They are similar to those obtained by Bishop5 for the case of (111 )(110) slip in axisymrnetric tension, since in axisymmetric flow the sense of lattice rotation for {111)( 110) in tension is the same as that for (110) (111) in compression. The pattern of lattice rotation may be divided into three regions: region A in which the rotation is toward [100]; region B, toward [lll]; and region C, toward either [ loo] or L lll]. Although some slip combinations in region C lead to [1101, the latter is not stable as continued activity of the same combinations will eventually move the axis toward [loo] or Llll]. It may also be noted that [loo] is itself not stable. However, close inspection of the vectors in region A shows that it is impossible for an axial orientation within A to rotate outside its boundary. Hence after heavy compression, all orientations from A and some from C are expected to form a diffuse band in the [100] vicinity. By far the largest region is B. Here all orientations rotate to [lll], which is a truly stable position. Thus the [111] texture component is expected to be rather sharp. For the case of (112 }( 111) slip, Fig. 2, region C is enlarged at the expense of A, with B about the same as for {110}( 111) slip. A significant difference, however, is that [loo], as well as [Ill], is now truly stable. Fig. 3 shows the results of slip on {123}( 111) systems. Region B is substantially enlarged at the expense of C, with A being intermediate in size between the {110}(111) and {112}(111) cases. Like the case of {110)( 111) slip, [100] is itself unstable. However, the lattice rotations here are confined to less than 5 deg; hence it may be considered "stable" for practical purposes. Finally, Fig. 4 shows the results of mixed slip. Here region B is the largest, and C the smallest, of all the cases considered. Both [loo] and [ill] are stable. The behavior of the three corner positions is, in fact, identical to the case of {112)( 111) slip, Fig. 2; it turns out that in these positions for the mixed slip case, all the active slip systems (based on Taylor&apos;s criterion) belong to pure {112}( 111) .4 In summing up the results for the four modes of

The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN) adopted its Clean Water Plan (CWP) in May 2020, as part of a federal consent decree to comply with the USEPA’s Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Control Policy. Planned improvements include constructing a new regional storage/conveyance tunnel system, promoting green infrastructure/ source control, and expanding the treatment plant. Preliminary planning for the tunnel system was completed in October 2020. The Ohio River Tunnel (ORT) project is the first of three tunnel projects that make up the regional tunnel system. The ORT project began final design in 2021. This paper discusses the advancements made to the ORT preliminary planning concepts considering property availability, alignment optimization, tunnel boring machine evaluation, contract packaging and delivery schedules.

Para ello, se realizó un benchmarking de experiencias de cierre y un análisis comparativo de regulaciones nacionales de Perú y Chile, además de una revisión de estándares internacionales. Asimismo, se elaboró un instrumento con el fin de identificar la información crítica para el diseño de un Plan Integral de Cierre, y una herramienta para evaluar los impactos sociales y oportunidades del cierre de faena.

A rocket parachute signal flare is often used to signal a maritime emergency. In the general operation of these devices, a solid rocket motor propels a metal body to an altitude of approximately 1000 ft(305m).At the end of the rocket motor, a propelling charge drives a signal flare and parachute out of the metal body and ignites the flare, which then burns for approximately 40 seconds as it falls to earth. In this paper, we describe an engineering investigation of an accidental ignition of a rocket parachute signal flare, which caused injury to the user. The components of the flare involved in the accident were inspected via x-ray and microscopic imaging techniques, and compared with those of unfired flares recovered from the same vessel. Chemical analysis of residue on recovered components from the accident flare was also performed. These comparisons were used to determine the likelihood that the actuation mechanism had been deliberately manipulated. In the subject model of the flare, ignition of the rocket motor is accomplished through a percussion cap which is struck by a firing pin. Prior to activation, the firing pin holds down a pre-compressed spring. We present a comparison of the ignition system of the incident flare with those of other rocket parachute flares, which do not incorporate any stored mechanical energy.

Reverse flotation is usually used for hematite/silica or bauxite/clay flotation separation in which the silica or clay is floated and rejected. Some properties of these silicate minerals such as particle size and surface characteristics have significant effect on their flotation behaviours. Firstly, the silicate mineral particles (especially clay minerals) generally have fine particle size (< 5 microns) in their natural states or due to overgrinding and they display poor flotation kinetics, consequently having low flotation recovery. Secondly, the wettability difference on different particle basal planes influences the affinity for adsorptions of different types of chemicals such as collectors or macro-molecule. Common polyacrylamide (PAM) flocculants can be used to minimize the exposure of the most hydrophilic planes of clay particles via hydrogen bonding but they can not efficiently enhance the overall particle surface floatability due to the hydrophilic properties of this type of macromolecules. A novel method to improve both flotation kinetics and surface wettability of silicate minerals has been developed and studied. That is to use a temperature-sensitive polymer, poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM), as a process aid in the flotation of silicate minerals. Unlike PAM polymers, PNIPAM can induce a hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition on the particle surface when the temperature is changed to be lower or higher than its critical solution temperature (CST). At a lower temperature, the PNIPAM adsorbs on the particle surface via hydrogen bond similar to PAM. It induces strong hydrophobic aggregation when the temperature is increased above the CST. Thus, both floc size and mineral floatability are greatly increased. The flotation results show very good flotation performance and the addition of conventional flotation collector was no more required because the increased particle surface hydrophobicity induced by PNIPAM. Contact angle measurements explained the role of PNIPAM in manipulating particle surface hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition.

Over the years, Coal Beneficiation at Tata Steel - West Bokaro has seen varied changes. With increasing R.O.M throughputs & lowering of the concentrate ash, Fine Coal Beneficiation process has thrown up myriad challenges. Development of Synthetic Collector was initiated couple of years back with Technical assistance from NLC Nalco India Ltd. Coal from West Bokaro unit was sent to Nalco?s Naperville (US) research lab for developing Tailor made synthetic collector . After comprehensive lab flotation studies, synthetic collector was developed & recommended for plant evaluation. The lab scale results were very promising in terms of improved separation efficiency & yield at similar ash level. The collector sample received from Nalco research laboratory were revalidated at Nalco Kolkata lab and finally at Tata Steel West Bokaro lab, confirming the promising results. (S.E 25-30 % better than HS Diesel) The key factors playing out for this improvement initiative are a) Scope for improvement in Clean Coal Yield at same or lower ash level coupled with improved Selectivity and Separation Efficiency b) Introduction of a Synthetic Collector with a Green Chemistry and subsequent replacement of H S Diesel, which is highly inflammable with a less inflammable & safer product Trial was conducted at plant scale in two phases and comparative performance of the Collector vis-à-vis Diesel was evaluated across the following Coal Seams of Q- SE (Seam VII, VIII, VI, IX and X). The results generated are very promising and the improvements observed are summarized below. ? Separation efficiency improvement by more than 20% observed. ? Flotation Fines yield increase varied from 0.6- 1.5 % on raw coal basis across different seams. ? Consumption pattern is 20-25 % lower than Diesel. "The Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery (RBMR) has the world’s first full deposit nickel plating tankhouse. Impurities in the nickel electrolyte can induce stresses in the electrowon nickel deposits that could lead to delamination of the deposit. Identifying the impurities that contribute to increasing internal stresses in the nickel deposit is key to successful operation and automation of the tankhouse. Impurities were introduced in the plant electrolyte and the effects on the full-scale nickel deposits evaluated. The impurity-adjusted electrolyte solutions were also analyzed using commercially available bench-scale methods to determine the induced stress. A correlation between impurity-induced deposit stress and full-scale delamination was developed. A direct correlation can now be made between feed quality, i.e. impurity concentrations, and degree of delamination in the plant. This methodology has the potential to rapidly predict the effect of new reagents, upstream process upset conditions and synergistic interactions between impurities on deposit stress and delamination of nickel deposits.INTRODUCTION Nickel electrowinning in sulphate media was first pioneered by Outokumpu in its Harjavalta refinery in 1960 (Saarinen and Seilo, 1985). The original process was very manual with starter sheets plated onto “acid resistant” steel for 36 hours and then manually stripped and cut into sheets which could be inserted into the main production cells for a further 4–5 days. The starter sheet stripping and manufacture process was later automated. The same technology was subsequently implemented on a number of plants around the world. Anglo American Platinum’s Base Metal Refinery (BMR) began nickel electrowinning in the early 1980’s. The recent expansion of Anglo American Platinum’s Base Metals Refinery necessitated the construction of a new nickel tankhouse to achieve two primary objectives. The first to increase the capacity to 32 400 tpa nickel and the second to reduce employee occupational exposure to nickel aerosols. The new tankhouse has been commissioned and is in the process of ramp-up; more details are given by Hagemann et al. (2016). Fundamental to lowering employee exposure to aerosols was automating both harvesting and final handling of cathode. In order to accomplish this a bold move was taken to plate up to 10 days on permanent titanium blanks which are harvested by automatic crane and automatically stripped. The original development work for the plating nickel on titanium blanks over a ten day cycle is given by Bryson et al. (2006)."

Bureau of Mines Research has demonstrated that it is technically feasible to segregate oxidized copper ores by use of a direct-fired, refractory-lined rotary kiln. Previously, the segregation process had been effected only in much more complicated indirect-fired, stainless steel kilns, The method comprises heating crushed ore premixed with small quantities of salt and carbonaceous material, such as coke, to about 830° C to produce copper as fine flake and metallic films on the surface of the coke particles. After grinding of the cooled furnace calcines, the copper is recovered by conventional flotation. During direct-fired segregation it was necessary to closely control the air-gas mixture in the burner. Good copper recoveries were obtained only when adding air in the limited range of 1.15 to 1.2 times the theoretical amount required for combustion of the natural gas. Batch trials of the new technique on quartzite-, limestone-, sandstone-, and limonite-type oxidized copper ores containing from 1.4 to 6.2 percent copper yielded flotation concentrates containing from 3.7 to 45 percent copper, representing 84 to 95 percent recoveries. Analyses of the furnace gases showed that loss of copper by volatilization was negligible. The preliminary direct-firing segregation studies were complemented by continuous runs on the quartzite ore, containing 1.4 percent copper, in an integrated segregation-flotation pilot plant having a 60 pound-per-hour capacity. In a typical test, 84 percent of the copper was recovered in a cleaner flotation product containing 25 percent copper. The study will be continued to further delineate the conditions for good segregation as effective use of standard ceramic-lined kilns will render the process more attractive from a commercial standpoint.

Partition did take place, Jrowel&apos;er, in Ihe Mn, ATi, and Pt steels, occurring in lewtperature. regions below the Ae3 of ca 130°, 65", UNDERSTANDING the mechanisms through which alloying elements influence the kinetics of austenite decomposition reactions which proceed by nucleation and 35c respectively. A break was discovered in the TTT curve for the initiation oj the proeutectoid ferrite reaction in the latter steels at the temperature at which partition began. The alloy content in ferrite at the a:y bondavy remained at constart lecels, shown experimentally to be significantly above those corresponding to eqiilib+iu??l, e&apos;en at the longest reaction times investigated (ca 1o6sec). The partition and the TTT curve observations foere rationalized on the basis of the thermodynamic treatment developed in an accompany ing paper. and diffusional growth has been a major research objective of physical metallurgy since the latter part of the 19th century. The measurements made on the dif-fusivities of carbon and of substitutional alloying elements in austenite during the 1930&apos;s and 1940&apos;s seemed to provide a useful clue as to the nature of these mechanisms. In the analysis of comminution processes, it is necessary to have a detailed knowledge of such sub-processes as: (i) The transportation of the particles to the zone where they are stressed, (ii) The stressing of the particles to a level high enough for breakage, (iii) The removal of the fragments that are smaller than the limit size from the grinding zone, and (iv) The prevention of agglomeration of the fine fragments. The breakage phenomena of particles is the most difficult sub-process to understand. It can be understood only by applying the principles of fracture physics to obtain information about the stress-strain field in particles which are loaded either by compression or by impact, and by using this theoretical knowledge to interpret experimental results obtained from single particle crushing studies. It is not only of academic interest to know how a particle breaks, but also it is important for practical applications because it provides a basis for evaluating both the direction and limitation for any potential comminution improvement.

Calcium carbonate/Titanium dioxide composite, characterized by coating TiO2 on the surface of CaCO3 particles, is an important substitute for titanium dioxide. This paper studies preparation method of CaCO3/TiO2 ,composites based on mechano-chemical effects, measures its properties as a pigment, analyzes the binding form and interface reaction mechanism between CaCO3 and TiO2. Through single finely grinding of CaCO3, co-grinding of CaCO3 together with TiO2, and mecha-no-chemical effects produced in the course of grinding, CaCO3/TiO2 composites can be prepared successfully. Results indicate that grinding fineness of CaCO3, co-grinding time of CaCO3 and TiO2, the weight ratio of grinding media to mineral feeding, and the amount of TiO2 have much influence on the properties of CaCO3/TiO2 composites. CaCO3/TiO2 composites have the properties same as titanium dioxide pigment, oil adsorption and ultraviolet adsorption same as TiO2, and 90% of hiding power as that of TiO2. Wet grinding of CaCO3 causes the production of mechano-chemical effect and hydroxyl group, through which CaCO3 and TiO2 can be bonded together. Repulsion occurs between the particles of CaCO3 and the particles of TiO2, respectively, they are both in good dispersion. But attraction occurs between CaCO3 and TiO2. TiO2 particles are distributed evenly on the surface of CaCO3. Therefore, coating of TiO2 on the surface of CaCO3 particles and chemical bond between them make CaCO3/TiO2 compo-sites have pigment properties of Titanium.
