The Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit is located in the Bayhorse mining district about 20 air miles southwest from Challis, Idaho. Cyprus Mines Corporation began exploration on the property in 1968, and at present is in the pre-production stripping phase. Molybdenum mineralization is contained in a late Cretaceous (88 m.y.), composite, biotite granodiorite-quartz monzonite intrusive complex. The complex intruded carbonaceous argillites, causing local silicification and hornfelsing of the sedimentary rocks. The main portion of the orebody is unconformably overlain by up to 1000 ft of Challis volcanic rocks (49 m.y.). Surface mineralization and related rock alteration can be recognized over a 2500- x 8000-ft area extending northwesterly from the discovery outcrop. Molybdenite occurs in a network of subparallel quartz-biotite-muscovite-orthoclase veins and veinlets within the intrusive rocks. The zone of +0.020/0 Mo mineralization outlines a steeply dipping tabular configuration in the main orebody and gradually changes into a hood-shaped configuration along strike to the northwest. The overall grade [ ] of the deposit is controlled by the abundance of the quartz- molybdenite veins and veinlets in the intrusive rock. Very little disseminated mineralization is present, and no economic mineralization occurs in the argillaceous sedimentary rocks. Muscovite, biotite, and orthoclase/microcline define three alteration zones that conform with the overall zone of mineralization. The upper alteration zone contains dominantly muscovite and sericite associated with quartz veins. The central zone contains coarse biotite and locally orthoclase and microcline. Molybdenite is most abundant within this zone. The lower zone contains thin envelopes of orthoclase/microcline around quartz veins. Based on about 313,000 ft of drilling and 8592 ft of underground development work, computer-derived ore reserve calculations indicate 200 million tons averaging 0.1 1% Mo at a 0.050/0 Mo cutoff grade with a waste to ore stripping ratio of about 3:l.

The Bureau of Mines has devised a procedure to recover chromium chemicals from concentrates derived from low-grade domestic chromites. These domestic chromites contain silicon and aluminum impurities at levels that are too high to permit processing by present industrial processes. The Bureau procedure consists of reacting chromite with molten NaOH under oxidizing conditions to form sodium chromate (Na2Cr04)' The reaction product is leached with methanol to recover the majority of the unreacted NaOH, then with water to extract the Na2Cr04 and the remainder of the NaOH. The Na2Cr04 product is recovered by evaporative crystallization from the aqueous solution. This report presents laboratory results of studies to determine the optimum leaching conditions for the reaction products of several domestic chromite concentrates. Results of solution purification and crystallization studies are also presented. The concentrates are from a variety of sources including the Stillwater Complex in Montana, Red Bluff Bay and the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, and a Ni-Co laterite from southern Oregon. Sodium chromate crystals were produced that contained less than 0.01 pct NaOH.

The estimation of local recoveries is an important issue in a selective mining operation. Two techniques, probability kriging and multigaussian kriging, are applied to estimate local recoveries at Jerritt Canyon. The pros and cons of each method are discussed in light of the results. Both methods provide simple and satisfactory solutions to the problem of estimating local recoveries. Consequently, they can be useful tools to work with in a selective mining operation.

"FROM 1850 when the annual production was around 50 million tons, coal output in Great Britain expanded rapidly to 225 million tons in 1900 and 287 million tons in 1913. However, during the First World War, countries which had previously bought large quantities of coal from Britain sought other sources of sup-ply or developed their own coal re-sources. Thus from the record figure of 73 million tons exported in 1913, Britain's coal exports declined until in 1938 they stood at 39 mil-lion tons. An important reason for this was the development of oil engines for marine propulsion. Today, nearly all the navies and mercantile shipping in the world have turned to oil engines. Sometime in the future, however, it is reasonable to expect nuclear power to replace oil.During the Second World War, coal output in Great Britain and manpower at the mines were reduced considerably and in 1.945, 175 mil-lion tons were produced by 709,000 miners. Exports were meagre, only 8.""7 million tons went to foreign consumption. During the severe winter of 1947, inland demand for coal exceeded production and exports were prohibited. Even importation of coal was required to meet inland demand. These were years when the coal industry of Great Britain made immense efforts to secure maximum output irrespective of economy. The energy needs of Great Britain appeared insatiable; but had it been possible to export, the nationalised mining industry could have made huge profits as there was a world shortage of coal. However, home needs were considered to be the priority and many overseas markets were lost. Other producers moved in and secured long-term contracts. Not only was the British export market lost, but also the nationalised industry had to sell the imported coal at the same prices as home-produced coal and suffered losses up to of:3 per ton. Bence, at a time when the National Coal Board might have ac-cumulated a reserve fund to cope with less prosperons times, it was having to spend large sums of money securing sufficient coal for inland consumption. This was a time when intensive efforts in the mining industry, comparable with those of many industries and establishments inclusive of the armed services during the war, would have produced a greater amount of coal and have been of immense value to the country as a whole."

Asimismo, en la evaluación del riesgo silicógeno en una industria extractiva, el ingeniero utiliza el instrumento Midget Iapinger, el muestreo, y los métodos de "campo brillante" para la cuenta de particulas, y la dispensación de la muestra en aceite de inmersión para la medición de partículas. El análisis de sílice libre comprende los métodos petrográficos, difracción de rayos X y el de fusión. Finalmente se hace una interpretación de resultados y se presenta un informe detallado de la condición de salubridad del trabajador.

Due to pricing volatility and lack of availability of metals, the use of non-metallic materials of construction in metal extraction and refining processes has increased significantly in recent years Even though costs and availability of metals has improved recently, these factors are not expected to continue into the future as metal supplies once again fall short of global demand. One of the most common non-metallic materials of construction used in metal extraction and refining processes today is Fiberglass- Reinforced Plastic (FRP). These processes often require materials of construction that can resist acids and high concentrations of acid chloride salts. As shown in Table 1, FRP based on epoxy vinyl ester resin has the same chemical resistance to acid and better resistance to acid chloride salts than alloy C-276 and is superior to 2205 stainless steel in both cases.

According to cross beam temperature measuring data of stock surface gas flow in blast furnace production process, using zoning method to deal with stock surface gas flow cross beam temperature measuring data, the evaluation system of stock surface gas flow distribution in radial direction and circumferential direction was established. Central index, platform index and edge index were proposed to evaluate stock surface gas flow distribution in radial direction, global uniform index and local uniform index were proposed to evaluate stock surface gas flow distribution in circumferential direction. Combined with actual production of 5500 m3 blast furnace and typical morphology of stock surface gas flow distribution,the strength of stock surface gas flow distribution was divided into five grades to provide guidance for the optimization of blast furnace operation.

Rock breakage is a major component of all mining and mineral processing operations with the particle size distribution linked to productivity through the comminution chain. Optimisation and automatic control of comminution, material handling, and agglomeration processes is a complex task with large potential for gains in productivity, and energy efficiency. A key factor in realising these gains is the requirement for fully-automated online particle size distribution measurement to provide the necessary feedback and input for control. Moreover, to enable automatic control system it is necessary to provide a consistent, reliable size distribution measurement that avoids the significant errors resulting from under-sizing overlapped particles and over-sizing clusters of fine particles. Published literature and observation of commercial systems indicate a body of predominantly 2D photographic based particle size measurement systems that suffer from a number of significant errors except in the simplest case of a monolayer of particles under good illumination with limited colour variation in the material. In order to overcome these limitations a university and industry collaboration developed three-dimensional particle measurement (3DPM) between 2006 and 2012, based on 3D surface profile measurement of the visible material on conveyor. 3DPM avoids particle delineation errors due to variation in material colour and shadows, detects overlapping versus non-overlapping particles, and identifies areas of fine particles as fines and not large rocks. 3DPM measures: the visible material and calculates its particle size distribution, bulk volume, detects boulders, and conveyor belt fill factor in an automated consistent manner. Furthermore, 3DPM’s advanced algorithms allow observation of particle variation that would otherwise be undetected without the capacity to identify visible areas-of-fines and overlapped particles. Boliden Mines has installed 3DPM at three operations for measurement between the stockpile silo and grinding mill, and measurement after the primary crusher. Fragmentation measurements across multiple years of measurement are presented with some observations of plant behaviour. In the future 3DPM results will be incorporated into automatic control strategies for plant optimisation. 3DPM is used across a wide range of material types and applications that also includes; limestone aggregate for quality control in manufacturing, agglomerates for closed-loop automatic control in chemical production, and measurement of coke for size-based blending feed control to the blast furnace in steel production. One of the challenges of mining is the concentration of heavy metals it releases into the environment through a phenomenon called Acid Mine Drainage. Freiberg is no exception due to its long mining activities. The European Union proposes that all rivers and streams must be in a good ecological status by the year 2027 but this would be difficult for large water sources as it would be economically unviable. Consequently, the approach of treating these waters at point sources would be of immense help and hence this column experiment on mine water treatment with carbon sorbents to remove zinc form the Rothschönberger Stolln. For this experiment three resins namely, APTsorb, activated coke, charred fermentation residues (which was produced by the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology) were analyzed through a simple column experiment to determine their sorption capacities. Through their sorption capacity as this experiment seeks to ascertain: we are able to make suggestions scientifically on the best material among the three for the future design of a treatment plant for the RSS. After the experiment whereby a 10 ml peri glass column was used, material A: APTsorb showed the least adsorption capacity (0.01 meq/g) and this could be attributed to the fact that the resin works well under pre-determined parameters such as pH and surface area. Material B: Activated coke showed a better sorption capacity (0.53 meq/g) in comparison to the basis value used for this experiment. Material C: charred fermentation residue which was produced by the University showed the most efficient capacity of (1.69 meq/g). This in comparison with the value used as the basis for this experiment showed that material C (charred fermentation residue) is very efficient for zinc sorption. pH values measured at the effluent of all the experiment were slightly higher than the pH measured in the initiating water.

Haul truck fatal accidents and injuries continue to be a significant concern for the mining industry. However, the availability of high-quality training materials continues to be limited. Near-miss incident accounts, if packaged well, could help fill this gap, because for every fatality, there are hundreds of reportable accidents and thousands of undocumented near misses. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) collected detailed accounts of 21 near-miss incidents in virtual interviews with mineworkers at surface mining operations across the country. From these interviews, researchers created four simulation videos. The videos bring these events to life through first-person retelling and various visual perspectives of actual events. Each video exemplifies a critical safety message and a common haul truck hazard. This paper describes the process of taking narratives and turning them into impactful visual stories. NIOSH plans to co-release these simulation videos with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to the mining industry to raise awareness and ultimately help reduce haul truck-related accidents and fatalities in mining.

Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) be located within 305 m (1,000 ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines, in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature below 35 °C (95 °F). The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from an RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for a mobile tent-type RA. The results of these studies show that 51 percent of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation and 31 percent to conduction. Three mine width and height configurations and four mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied by less than 1 °C (1.8 °F) for the three mine width/height configurations and by less than 2 °C (3.6 °F) for the four mine strata compositions.

This circular describes operations at the Eliot plant of the Pacific Coast Aggregates (Inc.). in Livermore Valley near San Francisco, Calif. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local expenditures only and not total production posts. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.]

La unidad de Ucchuchacua de la compañía de Minas Buenaventura produce concentrados de plomo, plata, manganeso. Sin embargo, el transporte y la comercialización de este último, causó problemas para el medio ambiente puesto que se auto combustionaba en los depósitos del Callao y era un peligro para el embarque. Posteriormente, se inicia la lixiviación ácida de los concentrados con la finalidad de reducir el MnS de niveles en dichos concentrados. Dicha implementación como etapa de limpieza, conllevó consecuencias en el agua, suelo y aire, los que fueron mitigados con la implementación de plantas de tratamiento de relave y planta de sulfuro de sodio. En este sentido, el presente texto describe las medidas para eliminar la lixiviación a través del cambio de reactivos y así reducir el impacto ambiental. Para ello, se realizaron investigaciones con diferentes reactivos de flotación para deprimir la alabandita y obtener un concentrado de 200-300 onz./tcs y 2–4 % de Mn (alabandita).

"In 2017, Petra Diamonds completed the construction and commissioning of a modern, fit-for-purpose diamond processing plant at Cullinan Diamond Mine (CDM). The design of CDM’s milling circuit is unconventional in that it comprises an autogenous (AG) mill with a grate discharge with large ports, low-revolution jaw crushers, and high-pressure grinding roll crushers with large operating gaps. In this paper we review the design to provide guidance on what is expected from the milling circuit and to demonstrate how the design aims to address challenges experienced in the old plant, which was based on staged crushing technology. We assessed the performance of the CDM AG milling circuit from commissioning and early production stages to examine its impact along multiple dimensions. In the assessment we sought to understand the lessons from our milling circuit regarding diamond liberation, energy consumption, and the future of diamond processing as a whole. IntroductionCullinan Diamond Mine (CDM), previously known as Premier Mine, is an underground diamond mine owned by Petra Diamonds. Petra Diamonds is a leading independent diamond mining group and a growing supplier of rough diamonds to the international market. Petra Diamonds is listed on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange under the ticker ‘PDL’. Petra’s total resource of 305 million carats ranks third by size after De Beers and ALROSA (Petra Diamonds, 2018).CDM was established in 1902. The mine rose to prominence in 1905, when the 3106 carat Cullinan Diamond — the largest rough diamond of gem quality ever found — was discovered there. The mine has produced over 750 stones that are larger than 100 carats and more than a quarter of all the world's diamonds that are larger than 400 carats. Cullinan is renowned as a source of large, high-quality gem diamonds, including Type II stones, as well as being the world’s most important source of very rare blue diamonds (Petra Diamonds, 2018)."

En la presente investigación se busca hallar una relación entre el UCS (“Uniaxial Compressive Strength”) y el WI (“Work Index”). Esta relación implica un trabajo en conjunto de las tres especialidades de la FIGMM (ingeniería geológica, minera y metalúrgica) por partes de los estudiantes y docentes. Esta relación es muy útil en los estudios de pre-factibilidad que se realizan en la industria minera. Mediante las perforaciones diamantinas que se realizan para determinar los recursos y reservas de mineral, se puede realizar un análisis textural de las rocas de cada sondaje diamantino y mediante la relación calculada se daría un valor de UCS y WI.

During 2007 and 2008, the project Optimal Fragmentation in Blasting II was conducted at the Långåsen quarry of NCC Roads AB near Arlanda. The main goals were:an evaluation of the effect of using electronic delay detonators (EDDs) in quarry blastinga validation of the design curve concept introduced at the Vändle quarry.Five production blasts were monitored. After a first trial round, the remaining four rounds each had about 100 Ø89 mm holes in a 14–19 m high bench charged with site mixed emulsions. In rounds 1 and 2, a tighter pattern than normal was used in one half of the rounds, raising the specific charge there from 0.7 to 1.0 kg/m3. Non-electric initiation was used with two holes per 25 ms delay in-row and 67 ms between rows. In rounds 3 and 4, electronic delay detonators were used instead, with 10 and 5 ms in-row delays respectively.The monitoring encompassed drill hole collaring and alignment, in-hole deviations, the rock structure in the bench faces from 3D imaging, first row burdens, etc. Eleven 400 t samples were taken from the muck piles and sorted in the quarry and sieved in the laboratory (lab). The lab data made up a fines tail that was grafted onto the in-pit sorting data to form sieving curves for the test piles. These curves were then compensated for the absence of boulders to construct the sieving curves for the blasted muck pile.These have been used to derive fragmentation model formulas for the non-electric rounds, also called design formulas. They are based on blast geometry, charging data and the properties of the rock mass. The formulas may be used to estimate the effect of changing blasthole pattern, borehole diameter and stemming length for example.The use of EDDs gave several unexpected results. In comparison with non-electric initiated rounds with a somewhat lower specific charge the fragmentation was much coarser; x50 increased from 160 to 200 mm. The effect of raising the specific charge in the non-electric initiated rounds from 0.72 to 0.99 kg/m3 was a much finer fragmentation; x50 decreased from 160 to 120 mm.CITATION:Ouchterlony, F, Nyberg, U, Olsson, M, Widenberg, K and Svedensten, P, 2015.
