It is estimated that the tailings dam of the Mouteh Gold Mine, in Iran, contains more than 770 kg of gold. Microscopic analysis reveals that sulphide minerals and active carbon are the main sources of the gold in the tailings residue. Flotation and cyanidation tests on the samples of tailings were conducted. Flotation concentrates, containing around 87.79% of the gold, which were associated with sulphide minerals, were recovered. By regrinding, roasting, and cyanidation of the flotation concentrate, the gold dissolution recovery was in the range of 87.8 to 98.4%. Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde, majority owned by Phelps Dodge produces 200M lbs per year of LME Grade A copper from low cost leaching of secondary sulfides and SXEW processing. Central to the success of Cerro Verde has been the continuous improvement of leaching practices which currently yield over 80% recovery of the contained copper in the ore. This recovery has been achieved by careful attention to operational practices and leaching process fundamentals. This paper details the development of the concept of “Lixiviant Request Rate” where by solution is applied at an optimal rate for the grade, mineralogy, and the point in the leach cycle. Also paramount to the success of Request Rate technology has been the development of irrigation practices such as drip irrigation and irrigation grid design. These developments have ultimately resulted in improved copper production, decreased sulfuric acid and water consumption, decreased pumping cost, and more consistent PLS grades.

A thermochemical model is developed to study the two-stage smelting reduction process for ironmaking without post-combustion. Steady-state multi-material and heat balance equations are solved simultaneously to study the effect of metallisation, slag basicity, coal rank and heat loss on consumption rates of coal, ore, flux and oxygen and production rate of slag to produce hot metal of a given composition, tapped at a given temperature. The model is applied to the commercial data for a COREX-plant producing a wide range of hot metal compositions, tapped at different temperatures. The computed rates of coal, slag, flux, ore and oxygen were found to be close to the reported ones, but an exact match could not be obtained. It is found that a four per cent change in metallisation brings changes the coal rate by five per cent, flux rate by six per cent, slag rate by eight per cent and oxygen rate by 13 per cent, while a ten per cent change in basicity changes the coal rate by ten per cent, flux rate by 13 per cent and oxygen rate by 22 per cent. Further, it is found that an increase in metallisation decreases the coal rate and export gas. At a given per cent metallisation, the coal rate and the export gas are lowest for anthracite compared to all other types of coal.

"Antiscalants were evaluated for control of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in gold processing applications. Under severely supersaturated conditions, 100 percent inhibition was achieved with 30 ppm antiscalant. Laboratory and field testing established that an antiscalant could both inhibit scale buildup and remove an estimated 0.5 kg/m2 per annum of pre-existing scale. A program was developed to control CaCO3 at a gold mill experiencing severe scale buildup. Annual accumulation of as much as 3 cm of scale in process piping was reduced to unmeasureable levels when 10 ppm antiscalant was applied. No scale-related upsets in mill operation occurred during a five-month trial period.INTRODUCTION Inorganic mineral scale is a crystalline deposit that forms when dissolved mineral constituents exceed the solubility of the respective mineral phase. Formation of mineral scale adversely affects a wide range of industries and is of particular interest in mining and metals processing. Scale affects numerous stages of metal extraction processes. Restricted flow in piping, nozzles, valves, screens, pumps and other components used to transport mineral slurries, metal concentrates, and tailings as well as scale in millwater and thickener overflow circuits are primary concerns (Alfano & Boffardi, 1994). Heap leaching, comminuation, flotation, vat leaching, carbon adsorption, and heat exchangers as well as oxidation steps used in processing sulfidic ores are among key unit operations that may be adversely affected (Simmons & Gathje, 2003). Antiscalant chemicals are designed to prevent formation and growth of mineral scales such as CaCO3. These chemicals, which include two primary classes – phosphonates and anionic carboxylate polymers and copolymers - are added to the gold processing stream at low parts-per-million (ppm) concentrations to interfere with nucleation and growth of scale forming crystals and to disperse fine particulate material. Application points may be located throughout the gold extraction process. Evaluation of the performance of antiscalants plays a critical role in determining the best product for a specific application. Performance evaluations include laboratory testing, pilot scale studies, in-plant trials, and ongoing performance monitoring during mill operation."

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, zinc, electrowinning Zincor has been producing zinc since 1969 via the roast-leach-electrowinning process. It is the only primary zinc producer in South Africa, and currently supplies the entire country with zinc. The plant was built by Goldfields of South Africa, on the site of an old gold and uranium mine. Since then, the ownership of the plant has changed a couple of times, and the plant and process have also been improved. Production output has increased from around 80 000 tons per year to more than 110 000 tons per year. This was done mainly through increasing the capacity of the roasters and acid plant. Zincor produces four main grades of zinc: SHG, Zn1, Zn2, and Zn4, in three shapes: a 25 kg ingot and 1 and 2 ton jumbos. In 2005, a pre-alloy furnace was built that enabled the production of jumbos pre-alloyed with aluminium. This has allowed Zincor's customers to improve the efficiency of their continuous galvanizing lines and to lower their production costs.

The construction of the pipeline was completed in June 1956 and the line placed into operation in December 1956, ie. it has now been in continuous operation for approximately three years under an operating pressure of up to 350 lb. p.s.i.In reviewing the operating experiences of the line we must consider three major factors, which are:(a) The effectiveness to date of the protective methods for prevention of corrosion of the pipeline, ie. the preservation of the asset.(b) The maintenance of the line in regard to interference as to its stability which could be occasioned by erosion of the line, land-slides, accidental interference by the public, or construction authorities, etc.(c) The operating techniques employed.PROTECTIVE METHODS OF THE PIPELINESo to permit a clearer appreciation of the effectiveness of the protection of the! steel pipe against corrosion, I will briefly describe the methods used in the construction of the line.The line, which is 18 in. A way back in 1851-2 an army of diggers had commenced the conquest, of the now famous goldfields of Australasia. At that time, and in the Colony of Victoria, more that 10,000 were camped on and around the slopes of the silurian ridges over which Ballarat East h'as been built. A wonderfully rich golden harvest was soon gathered from the alluvial found high on these slopes, and from runs (or gutters) which got their rise on them, and were traced down gullies into a broad valley. In due course it was ascertained that the valley carried a main gutter which represented the unity of the higher ones, and further explorations proved this gutter to have a westerly and then a southerly trend toward and under a basaltic plateau, on the top ofwhich Ballarat West and Sebastopol now stand. In the records of alluvial gold mining all the world over the Ballarat field can be classed amongst the richest. Gold in pieces the size of beans, in, stringy filigree bits, in dust and in solid lumps (the largest of which weighed more than 2,200 ozs.), was obtained in the comparatively shallow ground on the slopes; and speaking generally, great and uniform richness was met with along a belt of country on which, in a north and south line, the present quartz mines of Ballarat East are at work. It was noticed by the diggers that when the gutters crossed the upturned edges of the ,strata, the gold deposits in them were patchy, and that when they trended north and south on this beltthey carried rich deposits for longer distances. In time it was also noticf!d that a class of stringy, irregular shaped quartz occurrences, in a bottom of soft slates, in the, immediate vicinity of tpe g)ltter, meant greater richness, and (in the aIluvial) on the higher ground slabs of quartz would now and then be met with, in which strings and spongy masses of gold were found. As the shallow alluvial became worked out the diggers turned their attention to the quartz occurrences, and, now and again the striking of a flat make of a very golden nature would cause quite a stir in the local mining world.

The problems of using comparatively simple x-ray diffraction equipment for quantitative analysis are examined. Internal standard and direct calibration procedures based upon the measurement of integrated diffraction energy (diffractometer peak area) have been developed for the determination of quartz in Broken Hill dusts. By these methods an accuracy of ± 10 per cent of the true value can be obtained and this can be improved to ±2 1/2 per cent by statistical methods if necessary.Rapid analysis for the components quartz, muscovite, rhodonite, galena, fluorite, sphalerite, calcite, and garnet has been developed by adaptation of direct calibration procedures and use of maximum diffraction energies (diffractometer peak height). The Toulon tunnel project is a key component of the Highway corridor on the French Riviera between Marseille and Nice and is a fundamental transportation infrastructure for the region. The first design studies started in the 1960?s. The tunnel project is made of 2 separate tunnels: South and North tunnel. The North tunnel was built between 1992 and 2002 after 10 years of difficult construction (for example, on March 15th, 1996, a collapse of the tunnel in the ?Marchand Area? generated a sink hole in the city Center, causing 20 months delay). The South tunnel alignment runs parallel to the North tunnel at the same depth below Toulon historical downtown (20 to 40m depth with some areas with less than 10m of cover). The Risk management program was studied to be a State of the Art program in urban tunneling construction. The Hydro Geological Context The whole project area is covered with backfills and colluviums of 1 to 4m thick. The Schist, marls and sandstones, randomly distributed along the alignment below the first layer have different characteristics. While the Schist are pretty compact, the marls are fractured. The other layers have very different characteristics, and many faults are located along the alignment, especially in the limestones. The Breccia are heavily decompressed and deformable, as well as the other soils located in the Marchand Area. This 80m long area is where the settlements need to be controlled with an extensive monitoring program. The complete Geological profile is presented in Figure 1. [ ]

"This paper reviews the Falconbridge- SMRQ’s Raglan project in northern Quebec and the process that was used in developing its current long-term mine plan. Challenges were many and not only limited to the longevity of the project, numerous ore deposits (both underground and open pit), and a 40 km property strike length. As a result of its remote northern location, other factors such as progressive reclamation, leachable mine waste, water treatment, and waste management were also part of the plan. A combination of modern planning tools were used to formulate the plan including DataMine, Mine 2-4D, AutoMod Simulation, and an Excel-based financial spreadsheet to bring the total plan together. The focus of the paper is to show the complexity of modern mine planning and associated economic modelling of mine processes. IntroductionThe Raglan project is located 1660 km directly north of Quebec at the northern tip of the Quebec Peninsula in Nunavik. The main property is 40 km in length stretching from the Donaldson airport area at the eastern edge of the property to East Lake at the western edge. The Deception Bay port is 90 km north of the main complex/mill situated at Katinniq which lies approximately in the middle of the property (Fig. 1). The mine processes 1 000 000 tpy of ore from both open pit and underground sources. The mill is forecasted this year to produce more than 150 000 t of concentrate grading more than 18% nickel. All personnel and critical cargo are transported to the site via a company-leased 737 jet from Rouyn-Noranda where the main administration office is located. The majority of cargo is shipped to the site via Deception Bay from Quebec and on the return trip, nickel concentrate is shipped back. From Quebec, the nickel concentrate is sent by rail to the Falconbridge smelter in Sudbury and on the reverse rail haul, nickel matte from the smelter is sent to Norway via Quebec."

These investigations were conducted to determine conditions for recovery of nickel and copper from Funter Bay, Alaska, sulfide ore and recovery of nickel from nickel-silicate ore, Nickel Mountain, Riddle, Oreg. Samples of Funter Bay cupriferous and nickeliferous pyrrhotite ore, were treated by beneficiation, roasting, electric smelting of roasted are for matte production, chlorination, leaching, and sulfatizing roasting with subsequent leaching. Funter Bay and Nickel Mountain ores were smelted together to produce matte. Total sulfide flotation, followed by magnetic separation of the tailings to recover entrained nickel-bearing pyrrhotite, resulted in the highest nickel recovery in beneficiation tests on Funter Bay are. Overall beneficiation resulted in recovery of 98.5 percent of the copper and 95.4 percent of the nickel in the concentrate that contained 3.5 percent copper and 1.7 percent nickel.

Quarries around Auckland have reached or are reaching the ends of their lives, which raises issues about rehabilitation. Significant volumes of 'cleanfill' are generated by the City, particularly during phases of urban renewal and development. Emplacement of the fill in quarries removes the problem of fill disposal and provides an opportunity for restoration of the quarry site.There is a compatibility between quarrying and cleanfilling because at quarries:Truck routes are already established Neighbours are accustomed to the effects and appropriate buffer distances have been established Bringing fill into a site attracts aggregate sales and is very efficient. Fill originates from construction sites and ad-hoc excavations and therefore it is not surprising that sampling has shown the quality to be variable. Both Winstone and the Auckland Regional Council have surveyed undisturbed soils in the region to attempt to determine natural background levels of common contaminant substances. Comparison of these levels with delivered fill shows that a high proportion of delivered materials can be regarded as mildly contaminated. Therefore the term 'cleanfill' is, in the Auckland region at least, a misnomer and the term 'managed fill' has been adopted.Historically and presently the only control on quality of 'cleanfill' has been some visual inspection. This leaves the fill operator open to potential liability for creating a contaminated site. Implementation of controls at WinstoneÆs operations has progressed slowly, over some ten years. This is mainly due to the perception that mobility of contaminants within and out of the landfill will be very limited because of the near-neutral pH and abundance of clay minerals in the fill. The methods of control and results of environmental risk assessments at WinstoneÆs Puketutu Island Quarry will be briefly described.

Las simulaciones condicionales geoestadísticas se utilizaron como herramientas de control de leyes en operaciones diarias que evalúan la incertidumbre y el riesgo de las reservas mineras en estudios de factibilidad, así como el potencial de mineralización en ciertos ambientes geológicos. Otras aplicaciones incluyen evaluación de recursos y reservas recuperables (dilución), clasificación de recursos y reservas, y optimización de espaciamiento de sondajes. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo señala los aspectos de los esquemas de clasificación de recursos y reservas utilizados en la industria, el cual está basado en el modelo de incertidumbre que las simulaciones condicionales proveen. Asimismo, se analiza el riesgo que este modelo de incertidumbre implica para sub-regiones (unidades) de extracción del yacimiento, como las definidas por fases de extracción mineras o períodos de tiempo.

"The challenges facing the mining industry include complex ores and declining grades, together with increasing capital costs and environmental regulations. In addition, future commodity price uncertainty makes investment decisions difficult. Shorter plant lifecycles mean that new projects need shorter payback and increased net present value. With regard to solvent extraction, the introduction of an innovative modular plant design will help to address these issues. The first such modular offering is Outotec’s VSF®X modular solvent-extraction plant that uses prefabricated and transportable modules. Reuse and recyclability have underpinned the design concept. The greatest advantage of the VSF®X modular solvent-extraction plant is its relocation possibility. Additionally, it is suitable for various metals and plant capacity is adjustable through a scalable modular structure. After a dedicated plant lifecycle, the plant can be dismantled and relocated to a new site. This reuse ability offers major benefits for short-term plants, making them more feasible due to higher residual value. A net present value analysis is made for two examples, a conventional plant with no relocation possibility and a modular movable plant with extended plant life cycle, in order to evaluate the feasibility of modular plants. Results indicate that modular plant design could offer an economical solution with the additional advantage of improved overall sustainability through its life cycle. Part of a major sewer expansion for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer?Part II (BWOAS) consists of 13,200 feet of tunnel of 12-foot tunnel passing mainly through glacial deposits with a water head of up to 2 bar. A Lovat RME167SE was used to drive this tunnel with steel fiber reinforced precast segmental liner used for support. This paper will discuss the concepts for tunnel sup-port and TBM selection, the problems encountered with the TBM sealing systems and the solutions used to repair the machine.

Keywords: Self-propagating high temperature synthesis, AlN, Powder synthesis The particle size and shape effects of starting raw powders on the synthesis of aluminum nitride by self-propagating high temperature technique under high nitrogen pressure were investigated with various AlN diluents and Al reactants. It was found that the structure of beds of the starting raw particles largely affected the pore channels for nitrogen gas infiltration as well as the passages for combustion propagation before and during the reaction, resulting in the morphology and purity changes of the synthesized products. The AlN product of purity over 98% with about 30 microns was obtained.

A computer program was written for the design of a shell and tube heat exchanger on a price optimum basis for the following conditions: (1) Triangular pitch; (2) single or multiple pass; (3) heating or cooling; (4) no change in phase; and (5) inside pumping costs immaterial. Price optimum design was obtained for four standard tube sizes and standard pitch. The inside pressure drop was fixed and outside pressure drop was computed for the optimum baffle spacing and when the baffle spacing equaled the shell diameter. Standard shells whose areas equaled or exceeded the required area were also listed. The program was made adaptable to various fluids and to various tube sizes and pitch by reading in many of the required data such as physical properties of the fluids, tube data, and standard shell data in tabular form.

Automation technologies are increasingly adopted in different mines world-wide. This paper presents the technical aspects of vehicle automation applications at two Noranda operating mines. Teleoperation of 5 LHDs at Noranda?s Bell Allard mine is used in order to meet aggressive mining requirements under difficult conditions. The equipment is performing under high demand for reliability and performance. In order to further increase performance, automated loading has been commissioned on one of the LHDs and is being tested. Results to date indicate improved performance with respect to an operator through better filling of the bucket, fewer passes at the muck pile and shorter cycles. Noranda?s Brunswick mine is currently commissioning an automated haulage zone where two optically guided trucks transport ore from a remotely operated chute to two ore passes. Expected operational advantages include increased system capacity and enhanced safety and comfort for the operator. Monitoring to date indicates that the trucks can operate reliably under the conditions imposed by mine production.

Editor's note: This is the first of two articles on maintenance. Part two, "Effective maintenance downsizing techniques," will appear in the October issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Most mine managers are aware that the cost of maintenance rarely goes down unless work is done less often and with fewer people. Fewer people translates into downsizing and seldom means making maintenance more efficient. Even so, mines that have struggled unsuccessfully to improve maintenance and are now pressed to reduce maintenance costs may opt for downsizing. On the other hand, mines with an immediate need to reduce costs may be forced to downsize because they cannot wait for needed improvements to take effect. This can be bad news for maintenance. In any case, the mine must downsize correctly to ensure effective maintenance is sustained.
