In this study, the authors compiled some case history data and present some typical examples of rock slope stability issues in Afghanistan with a special emphasis on Kandahar region and categorise rock slope failures according to the principles of modern rock slope engineering. The slopes considered involve rock-cut, natural rock slopes mainly. The effect of structural geology and discontinuous nature of rock mass on both slope-cuts and natural rock slopes is taken into account and some preliminary assessments on the stable and unstable rock slopes are presented. Furthermore, the seismic effect on their stability is also considered. It is also pointed out that similar issues could be observed in open pit mines, which may be exploited in years to come.

Molybdenum and nickel in black shale ore exists as amorphous sulfides which has highly active, and easily oxide to sulfuric acid and sulfate at low temperature in the presence of excess oxygen. Take advantage of the characteristic to leach molybdenum and nickel from black shale. Oxidation, conversion and dissolution behavior of amorphous colloidal molybdenum and nickel sulfide in pressure leaching process was studied. The effects of stirring speed, temperature, concentration of sulphuric acid, oxygen process and mineral granularity on molybdenum and nickel leaching were investigated. The results showed that dissolution rate increased with increasing temperature and stirring speed, but decreased with increasing concentration of sulphuric acid. And dissolution of molybdenum and nickel from ore only need oxygen without any other reagent.

A molecular beam-mass spectrometer-low pressure flat flame apparatus has been constructed for the purpose of examining the chemical microstructure of normal methane-oxygen-argon flames and those inhibited with Halon extinguishants. Details of construction and performance of this apparatus and of related flame temperature measurements are given. Particular attention is paid to the empirical characterization of the perturbation to the flame caused by the sampling probes. The composition profiles obtained for normal flames are compared to those of flames inhibited by CF3Br. In addition to the usual stable species (CH4, O2, CO, CO2, H2O, H2, and H2CO), the inhibitor, its products and intermediates associated with its reactions could be followed. In particular, hydrogen bromide, bromine atoms, hydrogen fluoride, and carbonyl fluoride were observed. The relatively rapid disappearance of inhibitor and early appearance of fluorinated reaction products suggest a short lifetime for the CF3 radical in this system. Observation of COF2 suggests that CF3Br is effective as an inhibitor, at least in part, by virtue of its interference with the oxygen containing species of the normal chain reaction. Profiles of the 17+ peak at low electron energy suggests that the hydroxyl radical may also be sampled, but the profiles obtained are not yet sufficiently accurate to determine the effect of inhibitor on this important flame radical.

On St. Thomas and St. Croix, and possibly also on St. John, low-quality red-burning clays probably can be developed to provide the major part of the raw materials for structural clay products and earthenware pottery. 2. The potential sales volume for structural clay products is too small to sustain a plant in the Virgin Islands to manufacture such products in competition with Puerto Rico; however, handmade patio tile might be produced successfully. 3. The market for pottery utility wares in the Virgin Islands is too small to justify a plant devoted solely to the production of such wares; but it may be feasible to evolve a diversified community activity to make jugs, pots, casseroles, bowls, charcoal burners, patio tile, and other items.

AUTHENTIC records show that coal mining in Cape Breton dates from the year 1720, when the French military authorities obtained coal from what is now known as the Blockhouse seam, in the Morien district, for use at Louisburg, where the fortress, now of such historic interest, was being built. Thereafter, coal was mined more or less continuously, and although, for many years, in a very haphazard way, there was, on the whole, a steady growth towards a better regulation of the industry, culminating in the year 1825 with the arrival of the General Mining Association in Nova Scotia. This Company, more generally known as the G.M.A., had acquired extensive tracts in Brazil and Colombia and had also purchased the mining rights for the whole of Nova Scotia-excepting such areas as had been previously leased-the attraction being the rich veins of copper currently reported as occurring in the Province. These fabulous copper veins, upon examination, failed to materialize, but the engineer sent out to report on them returned with such good accounts of the coalfields he had seen that steps were taken immediately to investigate them. From that rime onward, the history of coal mining in Nova Scotia is one of progress and achievement. One of the first acts of the G.M.A. was to acquire the areas already leased to other concerns and develop these in a masterly fashion, employing the best machinery and talent available at that time. Such dominant control over the minerals of the Province, although it led to orderly development in the several coalfields, also, later on, resulted in restricting operations in the various coal centres to such an extent that a determined effort was put forward by the people of Nova Scotia to end such a state of affairs. Consequently, in 1857, the original lease of the G.M.A. was abrogated, the Company, however, being allowed to retain certain areas in the districts it had already developed. This opened the way for the formation of other coal-mining companies, and numbers of these immediately sprang into existence in the various coal-mining centres. In 1893, the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, was formed by the amalgamation of seven companies operating in the neighbourhood of Glace Bay, in Cape Breton. Later, in 1910, the Dominion Iron & Steel Company, Limited, obtained control of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Company, which had been formed in 1884 to acquire the rights of the two companies working in the Cumberland County coalfield.

A comparison of the amount of minus-28-mesh product produced by a standard grinding test procedure is provided for 45 non-metallic materials. The percentage of product, the weight of product per unit of energy used and the weight of product per mill revolution are shown. The results exhibited excellent reproducibility and demonstrated an accurate comparison of grindability for non-metallic materials.

Recently the petroleum market has made us aware that we are indeed global natural resource consumers, and as such, we have become captive to fundamental global resource economics and their attendant vagaries. Global resource supply problems are as old as civilization and mineral exploration one of its important catalysts. On the basis of natural resources empires have been expanded and new frontiers have been developed. Global consumption and production might even be viewed idealistically as a system dedicated to optimizing distribution to the consumer. However, this is not the case. Political instability and increased government polarization make dependency on a global market somewhat insecure. The U.S. must evaluate its domestic mineral re- sources on the basis that all metals are critical and that dependency on even the common and base metals may ultimately weaken our domestic economy and our potential international relationships and could cause critical weaknesses as demonstrated by the petroleum problem. This paper evaluates specifically the Duluth Gabbro Complex, of Northeastern Minnesota, (figure l), as a potential resource of critical and strategic metals. First, a chronology of some of the early exploration, will be followed by more recent intensive company studies and preliminary evaluations of economic feasibility. Lastly, metallurgical data, on some optimum conceptual mining plans will allow metal production data to be compared with an estimate of U.S. domestic needs in 1990. The purpose of this paper is to put into focus the difficulty of converting resources into vitally needed reserves.

Despite the controversies that have surrounded asbestos over the past 20 to 30 years, no knowledgeable authority has doubted the usefulness of this material. Were it not for the health risks associated with the manufacture and use of asbestos products, its physical and chemical characteristics would continue to be hailed as an undeniable boon to mankind. However, it has become clear over the past 30 years that like other major contributors to our modern industrialized society, asbestos must be handled responsibly and with the full understanding that lack of care can lead to injury, suffering and death. In this sense, asbestos shares characteristics with nuclear power, pesticides and even motor vehicle usage. It is unlikely that modern society would be willing to walk away from the benefits bestowed by any of these valuable resources. Rather, the appropriate response to the identification of danger is to define the type of risk, quantify its incidence, search for methods of decreasing the risk and implement programs to achieve the goal of minimization of risk. We should recognize at the outset that the risk cannot be diminished to zero without elimination of the material entirely from our midst. The concept of acceptable risk is a complex issue involving medical, legal, financial, moral and even psychological factors that defy precise quantification. In essence, the major danger produced by exposure to asbestos is its potential effects on the respiratory system. Despite the fact that asbestos workers have constant skin contact with the material and porbably swallow it in the course of their activities, inhalation of the fibers is recognized as the major health risk associated with its use. Aerosols of asbestos are inhaled not only by miners, millers and fabricators but also by urban dwellers who have no direct occupational contact with the material. This occurs because asbestos has been applied to our buildings and has been used in a wide variety of products that touch our daily lives. While it is estimated that three to four million people in the United States have been occupationally exposed to asbestos, the number who have been non-occupationally exposed is many times that number.

"The copper concentrate used in this study is produced by flotation of a black shale organic rich ore. This resource is a carbonate-rich, polymineral concentrate. In the last 5-6 years, ore characteristics changed and the concentrate grades degraded. This study evaluated bioleaching of the concentrate in stirred tank reactors as an alternative to the pyrometallurgical technology that is currently applied, and which may no longer be feasible in future given the concentrate chemistry.The first part of the study focused on testing non-traditional operating conditions during continuous bioleaching experiments: high solids concentration (> 20% solids), reduced agitation and aeration rates. For the same residence time, bioleaching performance at high solids loading (25%) was the same as that reached during previous bioleaching experiments at 15% solids. No mixing or microbial issues were encountered. The bacterial consortium used in the experiments demonstrated a high copper tolerance.The second part of the study was devoted to technology development for metal recovery from copper bearing solutions obtained during bioleaching experiments. Due to the high copper concentration of the leachate, solvent extraction prior to electrowinning was not necessary. After iron removal, high quality copper cathodes (morphology and composition) were obtained from the PLS by electrowinning."

The Nevada Massachusetts tungsten deposits (fig. 1) are in the Mill City Mining District in north-central Pershing County, Nev., about 37 miles southwest of Winnemucca. Contact metamorphism of thin limestone beds within a series of metamorphosed sedimentaries formed scheelite-bearing ore bodies. These deposits are distributed over a wide area. A Bureau of Mines development program was started January 11 d was completed on July 25, 1941. This work was centered on the outer and less explored beds in the district and comprised trenching, sampling, and diamond drilling. Exploratory work was done in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey. Project work substantially increased the reserve tonnage of marginal ore in three of the areas explored and proved the nonexistence of tungsten in a fourth area. The following pages summarize the history of the district, outline property ownership, and describe physical features and ore deposits. The plan and results of the work performed by the Bureau of Mines are presented along with geologic and topographic maps, assay maps, and diamond drill-hole logs.

The aqueous biphase separation process (ABS) has been used to separate ultrafine industrial minerals. The partition behavior of TiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and kaolin was not pH dependent. The partition behavior of SiO2 was, however, pH dependent. The partition coefficient of kaolin in PEG 3400/ Na2CO3 biphase system was = 150 and that of the silica in the same system was = 0.02, resulting in a separation factor of = 8500 between kaolin and silica. The aqueous biphase separation system was used to separate free silica from kaolin in a raw clay sample from Mexico. The partition behavior of mica, feldspar and clay from North Carolina was also evaluated.

The Bureau of Mines investigated alloys of copper with 2, 3, and 4 vol pct alumina and with 2 vol pct yttria. Alloys were prepared by a coprecipitation process and were fabricated by pressing and sintering of powders, extrusion, and swaging. Tensile properties at room and elevated temperatures, stress-rupture strength, electrical conductivity, and density were measured. The superiority in elevated temperature strength of dispersion-strengthened copper to OFHC copper was confirmed. Increasing the oxide content from 2 to 4 vol pct produced only a small improvement in strength properties and decreased the electrical conductivity. The 3 vol pet alumina alloy had the best overall combination of properties.

"The Waihi Gold Mine (WGM) operated by OceanaGold New Zealand Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the OceanaGold Corporation of Australia. Traditionally WGM has stockpiled and processed separate campaigns of open pit and underground ore. The ore is processed via a conventional semi-autonomous grinding (SAG) / ball circuit (SABC). The low aspect SAG mill operates in a closed circuit with two 20" cyclones, whilst the ball mill is also a closed circuit with a 10" cyclone cluster. A major wall movement in April 2015 ceased open pit operations indefinitely, 18 months ahead of the mining plan. This immediately reduced the forecast mill tonnage leaving two options: begin campaign milling or change the operating strategy and target lower throughput. Additional cost pressures necessitated improved milling cost efficiency. The immediate ore restriction limited processing alternatives to within the existing major infrastructure. Available comminution circuit survey data laid the foundation for developing a comminution model using the JKSimMet™ software package (version 6, created by KJTech). A number of flow sheet variants were then evaluated based on predicted throughput and efficiency. The comminution models suggested opportunities for improved efficiency lay in reducing throughput and increasing utilisation rather than on/off campaign milling under the existing operating philosophy. A series of process alterations followed, delivering new cost efficiencies that maintained the current $/t processing cost. This paper aims to review the change in circuit performance and examine the decisions and challenges faced following the transition from a high tonnage SABC circuit to lower tonnage SABC circuit.Citation:Haines, C and Bertoldi, D, 2016. Introduction In 1967, Tenneco acquired Kern County Land Co. The primary reason for the acquisition was to obtain Kern's agricultural, manufacturing, and oil interests. Included in the Kern portfolio were the core of Tenneco's present sodium leases in Sweetwater County, WY. This lease base has been ex¬panded and now consists of 62 km2 (24 sq miles). Beneath this property lies more than 500 Mt (550 million st) of economic trona ore. Following the Kern acquisition, Tenneco continued exploration and feasibility studies concerning the trona leases. The effort was accelerated in 1976. Tenneco was attracted to trona because of the favorable lease position it held, the growth rate of the Wyoming industry during the 1960s and 1970s, and the prospects for a long-term, stable business enterprise. The reserve picture was certainly attractive to a company long accustomed to the never-ending struggle to replace oil and gas reserves. In 1978, Wyoming was a boom area that had experienced rapid growth for a number of years. Unemployment was very low and vacant housing nonexistent. The prospects for soda ash were somewhat different in the 1970s than now. But it was recognized even then that a new producer would have a challenging task to compete in this business. Tenneco knew the capital burden required to build a grassroots facility during inflationary time, would have to be offset elsewhere Since labor and energy are the dominant direct costs in mining trona and producing soda ash these factors have always received a great deal of attention. Contracting and permits Environmental monitoring on the site began in late 1977. With the already mentioned considerations in mind, engineering began by mid-1978. Brown & Root Inc. was selected as the general contractor for the project. S. A. Scott & Co. was the engineering subcontractor for the mine shafts, hoists, ventilation system, and miscellaneous mine facilities. Frontier-Kemper was awarded the contract for sinking the two mine shafts. Acquisition of numerous federal, state, and local permits occupied all of 1978 and 1979. The Wyoming Industrial Siting Permit, which addresses socioeconomic issues, drew the most public interest. Siting issues were all satisfactorily resolved by negotiating reasonable stipulations with various local governmental units, school districts, and the like. Site location The Green River project location is not truly remote. It is located within 5 km (3 miles) of Interstate 80 and only about 32 km (20 miles) west of the city of Green River. Nevertheless, a substantial investment had to be made in communication and utility links to the site. These included: • A 14-km (8.5-mile) rail spur connecting with the Union Pacific Railroad at Bryan, WY. This spur has four bridge structures including one crossing Interstate 80. Most soda ash is shipped by rail, and coal is received over this line as well. • A paved 5-km (3-mile) roadway connecting to Interstate 80. • A powerline extension of about 27 km (16.5 miles), along with two new substations. • A 24-km (15-mile) waterline connecting the plant to a pump station on the Green River. The site is located on gently sloping terrain at an elevation of about 2.1 km (6800 ft). Ground conditions are good for construction. Weathered bedrock lies near the surface in most places. Geology The general geology of the Green River Basin has been well described previously. Tenneco's ore is in several superimposed evaporate beds. But the bulk of it is present in Bed 17, located about 457 m

Rare earth elements (REEs) are valuable for various modern technological applications, including metallurgy, machine building, radio electronics, instrument engineering, nuclear engineering, and manufacturing. The extraction and separa-tion of rare earth elements (REEs) from their complex ores is challenging due to their distinct physical and chemical properties, contributing to their market scarcity. At present, REE recovery utilizes traditional pyro- or hydrometallurgi-cal processes. The overall process in the recovery and sepa-ration of individual elements from complex REE systems suffers from high energy demands and the use of many haz-ardous chemicals that negatively impact the environment. With the growing trend toward a circular economy aim-ing to balance sustainability, efficiency, and environmental impacts, this research is focused on using deep eutectic sol-vents (DESs): a combination of a quaternary salt: Choline Chloride and five organic acids: Oxalic Acid, Urea, and Ethylene Glycol, Lactic acid and Glycerol for the selective leaching of REEs from their complex ore which is proven to be green, selective, non-toxic, biodegradable, and cheap. The effects of different DESs and leaching time on the REE leaching efficiency were determined, and the optimum DES media were found to be Oxaline and Lactic Acid at which a leaching efficiency of 25% and 15% was achieved at 80°C respectively for cerium.

To study continuous operation of the heavy liquid separation (HLS) of minerals, the Bureau of Mines concentrated spodumene from a typical ore. The studies included heavy liquid concentration, removal of the heavy liquid from the mineral products, and recovery of the heavy liquid for reuse. The research program examined the influence of feed moisture, steam consumption, stripping time, and condition of steam. Operation of multiple cyclones in series resulted in spodumene concentrates assaying 92 to 95 percent spodumene and indicated mineral recoveries of 86 to 89 percent. Continuous filtration and steam stripping produced mineral products containing less than I pound of heavy liquid tetrabromoethane (TBE) per ton of material. Problems unique to this process are discussed, including heavy liquid properties and viscosity, toxicity, material handling hazards, and safety precautions.

One of the war problems with which the Bureau of Mines is concerned is to increase production of iron and steel , in which coke is one of the major factors . The output of byproduct coke for use in iron blast furnaces is insufficient and is being supplemented by coke from beehive ovens (figs . 1 , 2 , and 3) . Some difficulties that cause a reduction in iron output have been reported in the use of some of the beehive coke.6/ About 20 years have elapsed since beehive coke was made on a large scale , and many of the skilled operators of those days are no longer available . Furthermore , in many instances the quality of the coal supplied to the ovens has not been as good as formerly. The ash and sulfur contents are often abnormally high; and in other instances they vary greatly in amount, so that a nonuniform coke is produced . To assist operators to improve quality and yield of beehive coke , the Bureau of Mines equipped a truck as a field laboratory ( fig . 4 ) and sent the authors with it into the Pennsylvania beehive district . The truck contains necessary equipment for sampling and analyzing coke oven gases , measuring temperatures , screen - sizing coal, and float -and - sink testing coal . Coal specimens may be sent to the Pittsburgh laboratory for analysis . Beehive plants producing good coke were visited first to observe details of operation and to collect data on the operating process . These covered temperatures , analyses of the exit ( or trunnel) gases , and coal quality, and were to be utilized in searching for faults in plants not producing good - quality coke and to assist in improving such plants or their operation .
