This report describes a computer program devised by the Bureau of Mines to model coal-mining situations where one or more panels encounter oil or gas wells. The program seeks in several hundred trials to evade the wells if possible or to minimize their influence by shifting or skewing the mine plan and/or adjusting the centerline dimensions of the entryways. Upon completion of computations, the program sorts the hundreds of models which have been tested, and lists the 10 best with their associated parameters. It also draws a mine plan of the best configuration, showing the entryways and crosscuts along with the "lost" coal remaining in the barrier pillars surrounding the various wells.

The ore studied occurred in the Three Rivers area in China and was a silver-lead-zinc complex ore containing 400.52 g/t silver, 4.77 % lead and 3.47 % zinc. Silver, lead and zinc were the major valuable elements in the ore and copper, cadmium and tin were the associated elements to be comprehensively recovered, whereas arsenic was the harmful element. The element silver occurred mainly in freibergite with small proportion in dyscrasite and other silver minerals. The carrier minerals for silver were mainly galena and oxidized lead minerals and then sphalerite, arsenopyrite and pyrite. The ore contained numerous minerals with complex mosaic texture and the lead and zinc minerals enclosed each other multiply, which made the separation of the minerals in the ore very difficult. Experimental investigation on the beneficiation of the ore indicated that with flotation separation process it was very hard to obtain single lead concentrate or single zinc concentrate that would meet the requirement of market. In the meantime, during the separation process of lead and zinc, silver tended to be dispersed, resulting in a low recovery of silver. Therefore, a rational utilization technique for the ore should be a combined process of bulk flotation to reduce arsenic? sulphating roasting of silver-lead-zinc bulk concentrate-leaching with diluted sulphuric acid to separate silver, lead and zinc. With this process quality lead concentrate containing silver and high grade zinc product and silver product could be obtained. The recovery of silver, lead and zinc in flotation was 85.10%, 84.48% and 82.48%, respectively. The total recovery of silver, lead and zinc in chemical processing was 97.07%(sum of recovery of silver ingot and lead concentrate), 99.61% and 90.93%, respectively.

In practice a sampling solution is a compromise of many requirements: the sample should be representative; the sampling system should also be reliable, less than 95 per cent availability restricts the use of the assayed sample for process control purposes; no sample is the worst sample, and investment costs and installation space/layout are frequently a restriction. For instance, online X-ray analysers for process control introduce a delimitation error by the nature of X-ray physics. Thus only in special cases a relative accuracy better than three per cent relative, as one standard deviation, is achieved. A sampling system for process control needs not to be, as representative, for so many sample properties, as one for composite laboratory analysis samples. Sampling system maintenance is also an important issue. There are many sampling systems in the industry which have been difficult to maintain and are in disuse for lack of resources or incentives to keep them running. Pierre Gy developed the most generally accepted sampling theory. One of the main principles is that all particles in a one-dimensional process stream should have equal chances of being included into the sample. A correctly designed and operated transversing cutter comes close to this goal but has limitations in temporal representativity. For slurries an acceptable solution in many cases is to use a fixed vertical cutter(s) in a position where the slurry is well-mixed by turbulence and other means. For online analysis, reliability problems are mostly related to faulty design or installation of the piping system to the analyser. Properties of material processed, process flow sheet and piping details before and after the sampler have to be taken into account when deciding on which sampling arrangement is appropriate. Guidelines and some solutions to these issues are presented in this paper.

A família de aços avançados de alta resistência – AHSS contempla uma variedade de materiais que são utilizados principalmente na indústria automotiva. Os aços bifásicos incluem-se nesta classe e são assim denominados devido a sua microestrutura composta por ferrita e martensita. Apresentam alta resistência mecânica associada à ductilidade, o que permite a aplicação de grandes esforços em pequenas áreas sem que ocorra fratura. Este trabalho visa verificar, através de caracterização metalográfica, ensaios de tração e anisotropia, as propriedades mecânicas do aço DP600 para trabalho a frio. A curva tensão-deformação de engenharia para este aço foi estabelecida através de ensaios de tração até a ruptura do corpo de prova. Foram obtidos valores médios de 330 MPa para o limite de escoamento, 589 MPa para o limite de resistência à tração e 20% de alongamento. Os índices de anisotropia também foram verificados através de ensaios de tração. Estes resultados foram comparados com valores encontrados na literatura. De um modo geral, as chapas ensaiadas resultaram em uma diferença de valores de aproximadamente 10%, possibilitando sua utilização a frio.

"The aim of this work was evaluation of the recovery of Zn and Fe of the EAFD added to the hot metal in the form of briquette at temperature of 1500°C. The EAFD was agglomerated by cold briquetting and introduced in the hot metal. This study utilized a bench-scale equipment to melt, during this process to kept a flow rate of inert gas above the bath. Were collected periodically metal samples and the samples were analyzed for determination of the content of total silicon and carbon by chemical analysis. Zinc oxide, zinc ferrite and other oxides were reduced and were volatized and collected by a cleaning system of dust (baghouse) located on top of the oven. More than 98% of iron were recovered from EAFD during the test. It was possible to produce a dust containing about 68% zinc by means of adding of EAFD.IntroductionIn the first semester of 2010, steel production was about 706 million tons, 27.9 % more than in the first half of 2009. Not a significantly increase if 2010 data is compared with the first semester of 2007 (only 7.2 % higher), before the world’s economic crises. Steel production is divided into two main routes. The first one, and most used, is the Basic Oxygen Furnace Process (BOF process), which in 2008 accounted for approximately 67.1 % of steel production. The second route is carried out in the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) that in 2008 represented 30.6 % [1 ].Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a solid waste generated during the steel making process. It is classi?ed according to NBR 10004 as dangerous solid waste-class I, because the elements Pb e Cd leach in water exceeding the maximum limits permitted by the NBR 10004 [2 ]."

An airborne dust cloud is an ensemble of particles of varied size, density, shape and states of aggregation. An understanding and quantifying of the dispersion and deposition of the dust generated in mines is essential to the development of measures for reducing worker exposure to dust. In coal mining, the major portion of the dust is generated during the cutting of coal using either a shearer or a continuous miner. The major phenomenon affecting ambient concentration is the deposition of dust. Particle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian and eddy diffusion, and inertial impaction. The three major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. The mechanisms determining particle deposition are size dependent.

The present work aims at some process modifications in specified metallurgical processes, wherein CO2 can be used successfully as an oxidant for decarburization in steelmaking and applied in some non-ferrous metals production processes. During the decarburization of Cr-containing high alloyed steels, the present researchers investigated the possible use of CO2 instead of Ar-O2 mixture and could successfully decarburize the steel melt without significant loss of alloyed Cr to the slag phase. A mathematical model was developed based on the bubble formation accompanying the chemical reaction: C(molten steel)+ CO2(gas)= 2 CO(gas). The model predictions were tested by laboratory scale (1 kg) experiments carried out in an induction furnace and very good agreement between the model predictions and experimental results were observed. A national project has been sanctioned in China for the implementation of CO2 in decarburization of ferroalloys as well enable the addition of pig iron in the electric arc furnace process when the scrap supply is limited. New processes have been developed for the utilization of CO2 in the case of non-ferrous processes. A novel method of treatment of Al dross by leaching with water and capturing the evolved NH3(formed by the hydrolysis of AlN) has shown very promising results.

The types of equipment available for generating a plasma have been reviewed. The efficiency and potential of the plasma generating equipment used in performing extractive metallurgical reactions have been determined. A general classification of the reactions that might be per-formed in a plasma has been proposed. Experimental work done on extractive metallurgical plasma reactions, heat transfer between the plasma and solids, and the quench of the products of plasma reaction has been summarized. From the preliminary results it appears that the high-intensity are or the transpiration-cooled anode plasma torch offer the most promising areas for further research. C ONSIDERABLE world-wide research effort is currently being devoted to the development of processing technologies which employ the new high-temperature generating devices that have appeared over the past few years. The plasma flames produced by these devices offer the potential for subjecting materials to any single gas or mixture of gases at temperatures up to 20,000°K. Due to the high energy consumption, long technical process, low usage rate of vanadium during the traditional smelting vanadium steel process, a new method for decarburization by CO2 to directly smelt vanadium-containing steel in blast furnace was proposed. In this paper, the thermodynamics of CO2 decarburization in molten iron process was calculated out by FactSage. The thermodynamic calculations indicated that in standard state, the transformation temperature of C and V was 1357 °C; the oxidation order of element was Si, C, V, Mn and S when using CO2 as oxidant. The experiment of blowing CO2 temperature showed that decarburization reaction temperature was 1550 °C, carbon content could be decreased to 0.676%, the decarburization rate was 88%. There was no effect on vanadium content in molten iron during the decarburization process, vanadium content was 0.323%, which meets the request of vanadium mould steel.

The production, use, and emission of vanadium in the United States has been traced for the year 1991. Consumption was 3,300 tons2, exports 1,285 tons, and imports 2,013 tons. About 98% of production was used in metallurgy; the remainder was consumed in chemicals, including catalysts. Total emissions to the environment in 1991 were estimated at about 3,100 tons, including emissions due to the combustion of coal and petroleum products. Emissions resulting from the production of ferrovanadium were 130 tons, and emissions from the production of steel about 6 tons. Dissipative losses, defined as losses that occurred during use or as a result of wear, were estimated to be no more than 3 tons. Disposal losses were estimated to be about 4,600 tons. Most of these losses were steel products that contained 0.1% or less vanadium and mayor may not have been recycled. When these products are recycled by the steel industry, vanadium ends up in the steelmaking slag and does not return to vanadium use cycle. Worldwide emissions due to anthropogenic and natural sources were briefly reviewed. It was concluded that industrial emissions were about three times greater than emissions from natural sources.

Com o mundo globalizado, surgiu a necessidade de um novo ordenamento em termos de espaços produtivos e de dinâmicas comerciais, acarretando novos paradigmas nos sistemas portuários, em especial nas cidades com portos. Partindo-se da premissa que os portos apresentam não somente caracteres técnico-operacionais, e sim representam instrumentos a serviço do desenvolvimento, interligando sistemas de cidades e fortalecendo economicamente uma região, buscou-se descrever os principais aspectos de um sistema portuário em geral, apresentando exemplos de portos eficientes mundialmente. Foram, também, avaliados os impactos e interações com as cidades, e as condições necessárias aos portos. Objetivou-se identificar, especialmente para a cidade do Rio de Janeiro, o estado da arte do porto, bem como apresentar uma postura mais moderna e descentralizada com relação à gestão portuária. Considerou-se a importância que este porto agrega para o país, porque as atividades econômicas desenvolvidas em um raio de 500 km são responsáveis por 67% do Produto Interno Bruto (PIB). A metodologia utilizada neste trabalho foi pesquisa bibliográfica, exploratória em documentos com conteúdo atualizado sobre o tema proposto. As análises do conteúdo foram levantadas de forma indutiva. Como resultados, ressaltou-se a possibilidade de implantação de uma nova tecnologia de automação utilizada em vários portos do mundo, que prioriza a agilidade nas conexões que transportam bens ou serviços, tornando mais eficiente e eficaz os processos relacionados a porto-cidade. Foram também abordadas e propostas melhorias nos aspectos relativos a uma possível modernização na infraestrutura, na logística portuária, nos fluxos, nos aspectos socioeconômicos e nas políticas públicas, com intuito de melhorar a produtividade portuária, apontar soluções para o desenvolvimento e para a reaproximação do Porto do Rio de Janeiro com a cidade.

Coal-clay waste slurries were dewatered in laboratory-and small-scale continuous tests by the Bureau of Mines using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. Dewatering from a nominal 7-wt-pct solids to over 50-wt-pct solids was accomplished using 0.5 lb of PEO per ton of feed in small-scale continuous tests. Parameters such as pH, initial solids content, and PEO concentrations were investigated. Water recovered from dewatering was reused as dilutant for PEO solutions.

Classification system efficiency (CSE) is a simple, powerful metric that provides a comprehensive measure of classification system performance. CSE directly quantifies the amount of coarse solids in the mill, and as a result, also directly quantifies the percentage of mill power being used effectively. In this manner, it is an effective, practical grinding energy efficiency metric.Three independent variables drive CSE: circulating load ratio, sharpness of classification, and classifier bypass. Due to practical downstream constrains on per cent solids, improvements realised by increasing circulating load reach diminishing returns as sharpness of classification and bypass deteriorate in the most commonly used classification device, the hydrocyclone. This combination of effects leads to the use of CSE, and its relationship to operational economics, as an objective circuit optimisation criterion.Its simplicity in measurement makes CSE a useful tool for the plant metallurgist, and it is not subject to a great amount of experimental error. CSE provides the plant operator a fast, simple, and effective means to evaluate the performance of the plant classification system. Improvements in CSE relate directly to circuit throughput and energy efficiency. This paper describes the performance of a modern compound trough profile spiral that is optimized for fine coal cleaning. Reduced performance (Tromp) curves are presented to compare these new spirals with older designs, as well as with other commonly used coal cleaning equipment. As an aid to equipment selection and circuit design, data are also presented to show how variables, such as flow rate, pulp density, and particle size affect efficiency and the separation specific gravity.

The Lithium Corporation of America's Hallman-Beam spodumene-pegmatite open pit mine is located in the Kings Mountain area of North Carolina. Figure 1. Presently this area of North Carolina is the lithium center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. The Lithium Corporation mine was started in 1968 and now covers 61,000m2 (15 acres) with projected are reserves in excess of 20 years. Lithium occurs at the Hallman-Beam property in a mineral known as spodumene (LiAlSi2O6), a lithium aluminum silicate. The run-of-mine are averages 1.43 Li2O. Figure 2 of the general Mining Division flow sheet follows the concentration of the Li2O to 5.5% and also lists the various by-products that are sold commercially. The unique properties of lithium have led to many commercial applications, some of these including lubricating greases, ceramics, glasses, glazes, welding fluxes, aluminum reduction cells, dehumidifying and air-conditioning equipment, sanitizers, polymerization catalysts, batteries, and pharmaceuticals. Multi-use pad operators require an efficient and economic method to destroy cyanide in their process residues so new material can be stored on the pad and leached. Operators of the dedicated or single-use pads require an effective cyanide destruction method for pad closure. Cyanide destruction can be accomplished by utilizing oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide or calcium hypochlorite, or by utilizing ferrous sulfate which sequesters the cyanide in strong acid dissociable complex. Ferrous sulfate can be the preferred method of cyanide destruction because it is a less costly chemical, reaction rates are almost immediate and unlike oxidants, it can penetrate the total depth of a pile without being destroyed by side reactions. Literature indicates that the (Fe(CN)6)-4 com~lex is produced slowly but it appears that complexes such as Fe(CN)4(H20)2-or Fe(CN)4(OH)2)-4, are formed quickly and should have no U.V. sensitifity, unlike (Fe(CN)6)-4. Stoichiometry of the testwork indicates that Fe«CN)4(OH)2)-4 complex may be the species formed. The usage of ferrous sulfate has the advantage of being able to bring ~ level down that divalent metal ions such as Cu++, Cd++, Hg++, Pb++ and Zn will form insoluble complexes and precipitate from solutions does not destroy weak acid dissolvable complexes and can leave a heavy metal problem behind after cyanide destruction.

Optimizing and adjusting the particle size composition of grinding products is of great significance for improving economic benefits and resource recovery and utilization. In this study, grinding contribution and quantitative separation of impact and grinding mechanism in cylindrical mill were creatively researched, and the grinding technical efficiency of impact and grinding was coupled to the grinding technical efficiency of grinding in drop-off mode. The results showed that the contribution rate of impact and grinding in grinding in drop-off mode varied with the grinding time. On the whole, the contribution rate of impact action increases with the grinding time and gradually becomes stable, and the contribution rate of grinding effect was just the opposite. Under the experimental conditions, the main contribution of the grinding process is impact action, and the contribution of grinding action is auxiliary. In addition, the contribution rate of impact and grinding effect in grinding in drop-off mode was also related to the feed particle size. The contribution rate of impact effect decreased with the decrease of feed particle size, while the contribution rate of grinding increased inversely.
