Hydrocarbon gases, primarily methane but also the C2 through C5 paraffins, the C2 and C3 olefins and possibly the C4 and C5 olefins, are byproducts of coal formation. Although it is generally believed that coal formation occurred at temperatures below 200° C, most experimental work on gas formation from coal has been performed at temperatures between 200° and 1,000°C. The objective of this Bureau of Mines experiment was to determine if observable changes in the gases from coal could be produced at temperatures below 200° C in relatively short periods of time. The experiment involved heating coal samples from six coalbeds at constant temperatures and analyzing evolved gases. The composition of the gases at three temperatures was compared. At 35° C, over 99 pct of the gas is methane; at 125° and 150°, methane constitutes approximately half of the hydrocarbon gas. Isobutane and pentane are the predominant higher hydrocarbons at temperatures between 100° and 150° C.

Foram considerados os fenômenos metalúrgicos de solubilização, precipitação, recristalização e crescimento de grão. Os resultados finais previstos pela simulação mostraram-se satisfatórios, permitindo uma boa previsibilidade da resistência mecânica do laminado a quente.

On several occasions, when 60-40 brass is first obtained in the beta condition by quenching at about 825" C. and is then reheated, the writers have noticed that reerystallization will take place in the form of twin crystals at the grain boundaries of the original beta crystals. It was, therefore, thought that interesting results would be obtained if this twinning process was studied further, especially as to the temperature at which it first occurs. The material used in the investigation was a bar of extruded muntz metal, 1/2 in. in diameter, and of the following composition: Copper, 60.21 per cent.; zinc, 39.73 per cent.; lead, trace; iron, trace; tin, nil. Specimens 1 in. in length were sawed from this bar and a hole was drilled into the side of each specimen until it reached the center, and the tip of a platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouple was inserted. A small Hoskins' resistance-type electric furnace was used for heating the specimens. The specimens were first heated at 840' C. for 2 hr. and then quenched ' in cold water, in order to get the material entirely in the beta state. In every case, in the reheating process, the furnace was brought to the desired temperature before the specimen was introduced. The time occupied in preheating was from 20 to 30 min. By sawing back 1/4 in. on each side of the hole, two parts were obtained from each specimen and duplicate observations were possible. The specimens were held at the reheating temperatures for periods of 15 min., 30 min., 1, 2, and 4 hr. All specimens were etched with a freshly prepared mixture of equal volumes of concentrated NH4IOH and H2O2.

Dusts from steel-making processes contain substantial amounts of zinc. Such dusts are also a hazardous waste and dumping them becomes unacceptable from environmental point of view. Therefore processes that can recover zinc and possibly other metals from steel-making dusts are being investigated. The aim of this paper is a contribution to the more fundamental kinetic aspects of zinc reduction from silica free calcium ferrite slags. The effects of alumina, lime and magnesium oxide contents of the slag, the COICO, ratio and the effect of initial Fe2O3/CaO ratio were studied experimentally at 1400°C The results indicated that the reduction of zinc from molten slag was possibly a first order reaction. As expected higher COICO, ratios increased both the extent and the rate of reduction. It was also observed that a higher iron content of slag improved the reduction of zinc from calcium ferrite slags. This fact seems to support the proposed mechanism that zinc is partly reduced by ferrous iron to zinc vapour and that ferric iron is reduced by carbon monoxide. The reduction rate of zinc in these slags was decreased by increasing alumina content of the slag. Alumina decreased the calculated optical basicity of the slag showing the fact that reduction of zinc oxide was more favorable in more basic slags. Probably the formation of complex ions by alumina and zinc oxide such as ZnAl2O32+ lowers the activity of Zn2+ ions in the slag and hence render them more difficult to reduce.

Six decades ago, the most dangerous job in the USA was mining coal underground. Roof falls were responsible for half of the deaths, killing about 100 miners every year. Fast forward to 2016 and zero roof fall fatalities. Just three miners were killed by roof falls during the following 6 years. How did the mining community achieve this historic goal? This paper starts by analyzing the roof fall fatalities in 1968, categorizing them by their fundamental cause. Then, it shows how each type of roof fall was reduced over time, using snapshots of the fatalities occurring in subsequent decades. Along the way, it evaluates the influence of the regulatory environment, changing mining methods, and better ground control technology. The study found that in 1968 more than half of roof fall fatalities at large mines were attributable to an inadequate safety culture. The immediate effect of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act was to reduce the riskiest activities, like needlessly going under unsupported roof. Other hazards, like large roof falls, required technological developments before they were brought under control. Roof Control Plans, which the US Bureau of Mines had been advocating since the 1920s, played a significant role throughout the process.

For every single BOF heat, the steelmaker must control the refining operation in order to satisfy at turndown the following conditions : - to reach the correct steel analysis (C, S, P, ...) in the shortest time possible, i.e. without reblow; - to maintain the temperature of the metal in a narrow range; - to produce the optimum steel weight. It is obvious that during refining limited time and scarce information are available and only very few corrective actions can be taken. For this reason, it is of the greatest importance to facilitate the control of the BOF process by taking adequate measures before and during charging of the converter. These are : - the availability of accurate and reliable equipments for the classical measurements, 5.e. weights, temperatures, flow-rates, analyses, etc... - the operation of an optimal charge calculation model which takes into account all information concerning the preceeding heats and the charged materials. '

This work goes beyond the general perception of how the well-known mine to mill process can be applied, by applying deeper knowledge along the mining chain. Grade deportment and dilution are considered at the mining stage, and modelled with the new SMI blast movement simulator, linking with the block model data. Assessing the shift to a considerably more competent section of the orebody is quantified via substantial milling trials at standard and higher-intensity blasts. These were stockpiled for batch processing through the mill to ensure feed integrity. The trial work included operating the mill at widely different fillings to develop Grindcurve milling responses. Additionally, model informed process control is initiated via a mill prediction tool.It has been found that accounting for blast movement for the higher intensity blasts could generate additional value of around $1.5M per blast. With the high-intensity blast and changing mill control, the plant was easily able to exceed projected mill throughputs with the far more competent Pipeline ore. Strategies to shift the workload and debottleneck the milling circuit were proposed and proven during the milling trials, demonstrating an increase in throughput of 7 per cent despite running at a lower SAG mill speed, and potential of 16 per cent for increasing the SAG mill to standard operating speed. A number of process improvement opportunities have been identified to enhance current productivity and ensure long term capability to process the considerably more competent future ores. All of this is being linked in with the major digitisation program at the Barrick Cortez site, with an objective of linking all the data into a mine-wide process optimisation system, that can embed the processes by providing process-wide data access and production support via the future dynamic models linking ore body knowledge to productivity along the full process chain.CITATION:Powell, M, Yahyaei, M, Geronimo, J, Yussupova, Z and Kumar, P, 2018. The paper presents and discusses the results of a detailed study conducted on the subject of energy consumption in the comminution of industrial minerals. The study was based on pilot circuit testing, plant operating data collection, detailed equipment data and literature research. The areas covered by investigations include: high efficiency classification; air classifiers for cement grinding circuits; grinding aids in dry grinding: dry grinding circuit, control based on particle size measurement. Results obtained indicate a large potential for the reduction of energy consumption, in particular in the traditionally high cement clinker grinding circuits. Better classification techniques and correct application of grinding additives can significantly reduce power used per ton of product and also substantially increase grinding circuit output.

A series of aluminum single crystals was subjected to axially symmetric flow by drawing through dies. The orientation dependence of the drawing stress, which indicates the resistance to this type of flow, compares reasonably with predictions of Taylor and of Bishop and Hill. Measured lattice rotations likewise are generally consistent with theory. The most successful analyses of the plastic behavior of polycrystalline metal and its relationship to single crystal behavior are those of Taylor1-3 and of Bishop and Hill.4-6 The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical test of some of the basic assumptions involved in these theories. Both treatments apply to fcc metals and assume the shape change of each grain in a polycrystal to be the same as that of the polycrystal as a whole. Thus for a randomly oriented polycrystal extended under uni-axial tension each grain is assumed to undergo axially symmetric flow. dey = dez = -1/2dex, deyZ = dezx = dexy = 0 [l] where x, y, and z are a set of orthogonal axes, x being the tensile axis. Although [011.] oriented grains in bcc and fcc metals may depart markedly from this ideal behavior,7,8 the assumption is probably quite reasonable for most grains. Under a uniaxial tensile stress, ox, the work dW per unit volume expended in producing an increment of axial strain dex is, dW=oxdex [21 Since this work is expended in slip, dw =STi dyi 131 where Ti and yi are the shear stress and shear strain on the active slip systems. In both analyses Ti is taken to be the same on all slip systems, and dependent only on the total prior shear strain on all systems, so dw = Tdy [41 where t is the shear stress required for slip and y is the sum of the shear strain yi on all slip systems. Combining 121 and [4] and defining M = oX/T The ratio M is a generalized Schmid factor. It relates the tensile stress required for axially symmetric flow, ox, to the basic shear stress, 7, and it also expresses the ratio of crystallographic strain, y, to the tensile strain, Ex It depends only on the orientation of the crystal. Taylor evaluated M for various orientations by finding the least value of dy/dEx which could satisfy the shape change. Bishop and Hill, on the other hand, found M by considering the relative work (1/T)dW/dEx expended by stress states which could activate enough slip systems to produce the shape changes. The results of both methods appear to be equivalent, although certain omissions were made in Taylor's original work. The orientation dependence of M, calculated by the second method,9 is shown in Fig. 1. Taylor used the average 2= 3.06 for all possible orientations to predict the tensile stress-strain curve (oxvs Ex) for a random polycrystal from the shear stress-strain curve (t vs y) of a single crystal. Changes in M from lattice rotation were neglected so points on the ox vs ex curve were simply taken at ox = 3.06t and e = y/3.06 from corresponding points on the t vs y curve. Recent extension of the analyses of Taylor and of Bishop and Hill to crystallographically textured metals has been used to relate plastic anisotropy to textures, and to predict the potential texture hardening that could result from texture control.9 Unfortunately there have been relatively few experimental tests of the underlying theory. Taylor found that the tensile stress-strain curve of polycrystalline aluminum did agree reasonably well with that predicted from a single-crystal T-y curve. A fratura por fadiga é a forma mais comum de falha estrutural e, atualmente, é um problema desafiador no projeto de componentes mecânicos. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi modelar matematicamente as curvas de crescimento de trinca por fadiga em função do fator de intensidade de tensão de uma junta de aço 1016 obtida pelo processo de soldagem GMAW. Os resultados obtidos no estágio II da curva de propagação de trinca por fadiga mostraram que o material respeita a equação de Paris para solicitação no sentido longitudinal. No entanto, verificou-se uma correlação linear entre os parâmetros. Esta correlação deixa de existir quando se trabalha com o modelo de Bergner. Não houve variação no crescimento de trinca por fadiga na direção TL, analisado segundo o modelo de Bergner e na região fundida.

Ever increasing depth of mineral extraction presents a challenging environment for hard rock underground mines. High in-situ stresses and associated seismicity with potential rockburst hazards are the major decisive factors contributing to the choice of a ground support regime. Conventional ground support systems, designed primarily for static loads, are not always capable of providing safe working conditions for underground personnel in seismically active mines. Systems specifically developed to resist dynamic loading and allowing for larger deformations are therefore preferred alternatives. High-tensile chain-link mesh has a proven record of successful use in open cut operations in various rockfall barrier installations due to its high energy absorption capacity. It has also been used in underground operations in various parts of the world. This paper describes a method of mechanized installation of a chain-link mesh evaluated at the Kiruna mine in Sweden and South Deep Mine in South Africa. A purpose-built mechanized roll mesh handler was used in this evaluation. The handler is compatible with all standard multi-boom underground drill rigs and is operated utilizing the hydraulic circuit normally used for the feed arrangement. A number of key performance indicators have been identified as success criteria: ??A 30-50% faster installation compared to the conventional methodology ??The mesh should sustain any blast damage when applied to the blasting face ??No unraveling of the mesh when cut ??No failure of mesh under normal conditions Although the energy-absorbing mesh combined with yielding rock bolts is a ground support system of choice for rockburst prone conditions, the operational upsides recognized during the evaluation imply that this product can also be competitively used in less demanding ground conditions where customarily weld mesh or shotcrete are used as a primary surface support. The main conclusion: a fast, safe and fully mechanized installation.

The text describes the local mineral aggregate resources, extractive activity and characteristics of the ""Selected Deposits"". The first map shows the known sand and gravel resources and their quality. The second map indicates selected sand and gravel resources of primary, secondary and tertiary significance. The third map indicates both bedrock resources and bedrock areas suitable f or extraction. These maps and the text are prepared in a formal suited for use by planning personnel.Recently, the Aggregate Resources Inventory Program has undergone evolutionary changes. New sources of data are being utilized in the inventory reports; in particular, detailed field assessment by inspecting, sampling, drilling and backhoe pitting. Liaison and joint assessment with district and regional Mineral Resources staff of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and personnel of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, are key components of the Program.Twenty-two reports were available to the public as of December 1980, with a further thirty-six awaiting publication. Our present production rate is 3.5 reports per month. The reports appear to be well accepted by the municipalities and have proven effective in conserving prime aggregate resource areas.IntroductionThe urbanization of Southern Ontario has resulted in a major increase in the production of industrial minerals, such as sand, gravel, clay, shale, gypsum and stone, for use as cru shed aggregate, building stone, lime and cement.Although mineral aggregate deposits are plentiful in Southern Ontario, they are fixed-location, non-renewable resources. The potential for extractive development is usually greatest in urban fringe areas where land-use competition is extreme. Lafayette Mining Limited, a listed Australian company, is developing a polymetallic Project on the island of Rapu Rapu, located to the east of southern Luzon in the Philippines. The Rapu Rapu Project is based on the Ungay deposit, which has proven and probable reserves of 6.0 million tonnes of 2.5 g/t Au, 28 g/t Ag, 1.2 per cent Cu and 2.1 per cent Zn. The Project will produce copper and zinc concentrates from a sulphide flotation plant as well as dore from a CIL gold plant. Average annual metal production over the projected six-year mine life is 9800 tonnes of copper, 14 000 tonnes of zinc, 50 000 ounces of gold and 590 000 ounces of silver. Despite a rich mineral endowment and long mining history, there have not been any significant new mine developments in the Philippines since the early-1990s. The investment climate has been affected by legal challenges to the 1995 mining code, civil unrest in parts of the country, the impeachment of the previous President and community concerns about the industryÆs environmental performance. As a consequence, the Rapu Rapu Project is viewed as a test case û within both the country and the international mining industry û on whether minerals investment in the Philippines is an acceptable business proposition from a risk perspective. Lafayette has faced formidable challenges in managing the development risks of the Project. The major risk areas of the Project for which the company developed strategies include: regulatory, environmental and approvals issues, technical evaluation, project development, social and community issues, land acquisition, and financial and marketing issues. This paper describes the risk management strategies successfully pursued by the company, and which have the Project on track to commence construction in 2003. Dealing with each of the areas in turn, Lafayette sought to develop strategies which either effectively neutralised, minimised or otherwise addressed the key risks most likely to be experienced.

A shrinkage stope is an overhand stope in which the broken ore accumulates until the stope is completed to, or near, the level above. As broken ore generally occupies at least 60 per cent. more space than ore in place, about a third of this must be drawn out as the stope advances to leave a working space under the back. The ore remaining supports the miners and gives temporary support to walls, and is all withdrawn when the stope is finished. The shrinkage-stope method is applicable to steep-dipping deposits of strong ore with strong walls. It may be applied to narrow or wide veins, and is simple and cheap. Five examples, which include important and varied types of deposits, are given: namely, Kennecott, Homestake, Jarbidge district, Mogollon district, and Cripple Creek district.

Natural gas is a general term applied to the gas obtained from oil or gas wells. It is the most widely used of all gaseous fuels. The principal disadvantage in the use of this and other gaseous fuels is the difficulty encountered in the storage and transportation of large quantities in the gas state. Handling in the liquid state is possible, but reduced temperatures are required since methane (table 1) is the principal component of most natural gases that are used as fuels. Actually, liquid storage has been utilized both here and abroad;3 however, the Cleveland disaster4 has pointed out the need for a critical evaluation of the hazards involved in the storage of this cryogenic fuel. Accordingly, a program was undertaken to obtain basic data that could be used to assess these hazards. In this report, the factors to be considered in an evaluation of the fire and explosion hazards associated with any fuel are each discussed briefly. These factors are then used to assist in the design of experiments for the evaluation of the hazards associated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) relative to those associated with other common fuels. Experiments have been conducted on the vaporization of LNG, the mixing of LNG vapors with air, the effect of temperature and nitrogen dilution on the limits of flammability of methane in air, the burning rates of LNG and other fuels, flame radiation, and extinguishment of fires above liquid pools. Based on the results of these experiments, LNG can be stored safely in suitably designed above-ground tanks surrounded by earthen dikes in much the same manner as gasoline.

The efficient separation of metal species from aqueous streams by precipitation techniques requires 'a fundamental understanding of the various processes that occur during precipitation. These processes include particle nucleation, particle growth by solute deposition, agglomerate formation, and agglomerate break-up. The application of the population balance approach has been used to develop a kinetic model that accounts for these competing kinetic processes. The usefulness of the model is illustrated through its application to the precipitation of yttrium hydroxynitrate, YHN. The kinetic parameters calculated from the model equations and system-specific solution chemistry are used to describe several aspects of the effect of pH on the precipitation of the YHN. Implications with respect to the simultaneous precipitation of more than one cation type are also discussed through use of example systems: The effects of solution chemistry, precipitator design, and solvent choice are considered.

A site characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic design of underground structures is presented, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock failure process. It entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing the theory of extremes and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass properties can be estimated using empirical relationships currently available. This results of analyses can be incorporated into the design of underground structures, and then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

THE discovery of natural gas with naphtha in 1924 in the Upper Palaeozoic limestone of Turner Valley, 35 miles southwest of Calgary, has led to continuous developments in this field. Drilling undertaken soon after this discovery demonstrated that the anticlinal structure was in reality a major drag-fold cut off on the east side by a westerly inclined fault of large displacement. The faulted edge of the .limestone at depth determines the eastern limits of the field, which between 1924 and 1936 was shown to have a gas area 14 miles long by about 1 mile wide. Since the strata dip westerly, away from the axis of the fold, drilling becomes progressively deeper to the west and, with the advent of deeper drilling, crude oil was discovered in 1936 on the west flank of the structure but in the same porous reservoir rocks as the gas on the crest and upper parts of the fold. Since 1936, drilling has been undertaken wholly for the production of crude-oil and at present two producing areas have been found within the Turner Valley structure. The larger of these, at the south end of the field, in the vicinity of Highwood river, has a length of about 4 3/4 miles and a proved width of one mile, whereas the smaller, in the north end of the field, south of the north fork of Sheep river, has only a few producing wells.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar o efeito da incorporação de até 40% em peso de um resíduo gerado na forma de lama proveniente da etapa de lapidação da fabricação de vidros em cerâmica vermelha. Inicialmente o resíduo foi caracterizado pelo emprego das técnicas de fluorescência de raios-X, peneiramento e sedimentação e dilatometria ótica. A plasticidade das composições foi determinada pelo método de Atterberg. Corpos-de-prova foram obtidos por prensagem uniaxial a 20 MPa e queimados nas temperaturas de 900 e 1000ºC. As propriedades físicas a mecânicas avaliadas foram: retração linear, absorção de água e tensão de ruptura à flexão. Os resultados indicaram que o resíduo é apropriado para o uso em cerâmica vermelha em mistura com argilas, contribuindo para reduzir a absorção de água e aumentar a resistência mecânica da cerâmica nas temperaturas investigadas.
