"Magnetic seeding co-agglomeration, i.e. adding magnetic seeds, organic depressant (such as the starch), and pre-magnetization for co-agglomeration, was applied in the reverse flotation for hematite ore slimes. Samples of the hematite ore slimes and the pure hematite fines were investigated by the co-agglomeration, respectively. Flotation tests suggest that the depressing effect of starch in the flotation was further enhanced with the addition of magnetic seeds and the pre-magnetization. Following the laser size analysis and flotation tests, TOC adsorption analysis, VSM, surface charge measurement, AFM, FTIR study, and SEM imaging have been utilized to understand the depressing mechanism. Based on the results it was demonstrated that with the addition of magnetic seeds and the low field pre-magnetization, the adsorption of starch onto hematite minerals was strengthened through the magnetic seeding co-agglomeration. The co-agglomeration improved the flotation performance by introducing the magnetic interactions and acting the bridging adsorption of starch between fine hematite and magnetic seeds in a suspension, and then resulting in an intensified coverage of the starch onto hematite particles and positive action in the coagglomeration under the pre-magnetization.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is undoubtedly the most important and versatile mineral processing technique, and both its use and application are continually being expanded to treat greater tonnages and to cover new area. However, its influence was limited to a relatively narrow particle size range of 5–300 µm (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006). The main reason behind this limitation lies in that fine particles have high specific surface area, so need relatively high dosage of reagents (collectors or depressants), and exhibit poor flotation performance while intermediate or properly-sized particles produce high flotation kinetics and need low consumption of reagents. In order to increase the recovery of fine particles, quite a few of flotation techniques have been investigated. Most of them are based on particle aggregation, namely, by enlarging the apparent particle size, such as carrier flotation (Valderrama and Rubio, 1998; Zhu et al., 2009), shear flocculation (Duzyola and Ozkan, 2010; Yin et al., 2011), selective polymer flocculation (Rubio et al., 2007; Song et al., 2012; Ng et al., 2015), oil agglomeration (Laskowski and Lopez- Vladivieso, 2004; Forbes, 2011), temperature responsive polymer flocculation flotation (Forbes et al, 2011), and etc. However, these techniques above-mentioned are mainly studied for the direct flotation of fine minerals, and most of these techniques have not found applications for iron ore slimes especially recovered by the reverse cationic or anionic flotation."

Foram estudados os tipos de projeções, suas características e medidas de controle, a partir do acompanhamento de corridas na ArcelorMittal Tubarão, inclusive com amostragem e análises dos resíduos de projeção. Utilizando-se termodinâmica computacional estimou-se a viscosidade da projeção, que se mostrou muito heterogênea. Projeções ocorreram em uma faixa extensa de Si do gusa, inclusive em valores abaixo de 0,30%, com maior frequência entre 0,30% e 0,40%. As adições de minério de ferro tiveram forte influência na ocorrência de projeções possivelmente devido ao efeito conjugado de redução da permeabilidade e geração de gás. Um modelo conceitual das causas principais das projeções foi proposto e validado com observações de ocorrência de projeções tardias no sopro. Foi também proposto que as ações de controle de projeções deveriam ser ajustadas de forma a priorizar o controle da taxa de descarburação e o aumento da permeabilidade da emulsão.

IT is now generally admitted by experts that at least so far as rapid progress is concerned the Alpine system of tunnel-driving is superior to any other. This is perhaps natural in view of the record of experience in driving tunnels through the Alps. These great mountain-chains cannot be treated in the ordinary way by shaft-sinking and driving headings, thus multiplying the points of attack. The work must be done from the ends only, hence speed in driving is of the utmost importance; and, as necessity is the mother of invention, the concentration of effort to make progress has resulted in an organization and in mechanical appliances that have produced results so much in excess of the usual practice, even in America, that a discussion of the subject in detail should be of much value to the engineer and contractor. The first Alpine tunnel was the Mont Cenis, length 7.5 miles, driven with a progress that averaged about 7.75 ft. per day. Next came the Saint Gothard, 9.5 miles long, 18 ft. per day; Arlberg, 6.5 miles long, 27.25 ft. per day; Simplon, 12.25 miles long, 36 ft. per day. The figures represent progress when driving from two headings, so that by dividing them in two we get the daily single-heading progress. The latest of the Alpine tunnels is the Loetschberg, now being driven. In this work the world's record has been beaten by a single day's record in one heading of 36 ft. and by an average daily record in. one heading of 29.5 feet. The Alpine range forms a natural barrier between a large section of northern and southern Europe. The Bureau of Mines, in an effort to improve resource conservation, mine planning and development, is currently investigating the loading behavior of pillars in multiple-seam developments. The simultaneous mining of two or more coalbeds may cause instability between room-and-pillar operations resulting in an interaction known as pillar load transfer. Although pillars may be adequately designed for single-seam mining, the development of a second seam may complicate loading conditions in both operations. If pillars are not adequately designed to contend with this load transfer, failure of the mine structure may result. To improve multiple-seam development and pillar design, the Bureau studied the loading characteristics of pillars in three separate multiple-seam operations. In all three cases, instrumented pillars recorded increasing pressure after development of the second seam. Increases in the average pillar pressure ranged from 7 to 110 pct over predicted overburden loads. An analysis of pillar loading before and after second-seam mining indicates that the ratio of overburden to innerburden thickness is a critical factor influencing load transfer. Based on this relationship, safety factors for case study pillars are calculated and alternative design considerations are discussed.

Fibras lignocelulósicas vem se tornando alvo de cada vez mais estudos que visam ampliar o aspecto de suas aplicações. Uma de suas aplicações mais importantes é como reforço de compósitos poliméricos na substituição de fibras sintéticas, que não são ambientalmente corretas. Todavia, as fibras ligoncelulósicas com Malva, Juta dentre outras possuem algumas características negativas para sua incorporação em matrizes poliméricas, como por exemplo, o fato dessas não possuírem boa aderência aos polímeros, pelo seu caráter hidrofílico e do caráter hidrofóbico das resinas. Esse trabalho estudou a incorporação de manta hibrida de fibras de malva e juta em compósitos epoxy DGEBA/TETA para testes de impacto Charpy. Os corpos de prova foram feitos sob pressão para que houvesse uma melhora na aderência. O aumento do volume da manta incorporado gerou um aumento da resistência apresentado que pode ser justificado pelo fato da manta atuar como um bloqueador de trincas.

A presente pesquisa dedica-se a analisar a adição de biomassa de serragem, que é uma matéria-prima carbonosa que pode ser utilizada nas misturas de carvão para produção do coque metalúrgico, preservando a qualidade exigida, com menor custo. A qualidade do coque metalúrgico pode ser determinada por meio da efetividade das suas funções químicas, físicas e térmicas no interior do alto-forno. Para produção de ferro gusa, qualquer modificação nos constituintes das matérias-primas pode ter influência direta na produtividade do alto-forno e na qualidade final do aço. A partir das análises de degradação térmica como reatividade do coque (CRI) e resistência do coque após reação (CSR), resistência a frio (DI) e análises imediatas, pode-se definir a qualidade do coque metalúrgico produzido com serragem. Assim sendo, o objetivo é relacionar estes parâmetros com as particularidades do material e suas funções no alto-forno. Os resultados mostram que tecnicamente é viável a utilização de até 2% de serragem de eucalipto na mistura de carvões.

The purity of rectorite is only about 70% after preliminary mineral processing, which has limited its application. In this research, different pulp densities, different dispersants, different dispersing methods and purification flow sheets were used to purify rectorite. The results show that it is possible to obtain high pure rectorite clay with the purity above 90% and concentrate yield between 24.9% and 29.4% by the purification process with composite dispersants, stirred mill grinding dispersion and so on. The obtained high pure rectorite can be further used in rectorite nanocomposites.

O presente trabalho teve por finalidade analisar as tensões residuais, através da técnica de difração de raios-X, em amostras de cobre submetidas à laminação em temperatura ambiente. Foram obtidos e comparados os resultados de um software comercial com um software projetado pelos autores. O comportamento das tensões principais das amostras laminadas foi comparado com o resultado do material no estado recozido. Uma tendência de aumento de tração trativa no interior da amostra foi identificada. Os resultados obtidos seguiram um comportamento dentro do previsto pela bibliografia e os dois softwares utilizados acusaram valores similares, ratificando a aplicabilidade do método de difração assim como a funcionalidade do software desenvolvido.

Introduction The plant described in this paper is located at Coniston, Ontario, the smelting centre of the former Mond Nickel Company. Coniston is situated some eight miles east of Sudbury on the main line of the Canadian Pacific railway and on the Toronto-Capreol branch of the Canadian National-railways. The plant is now under control of the International Nickel Company, as a result of the merger of the two companies in 1929. The smelter proper includes four 50-in. by 240-in. blast furnaces and five 13 ft. by 30 ft. converters, and has a capacity of about 65,000 tons of ore charge per month. As accessories to the smelter there are a mill, where some 10,000 tons per month of low-grade ores are concentrated, and the sintering plant, which is the subject of this paper. The present 6-unit sintering plant replaces a former 4-unit installation. Here, fine ores, concentrates, and flue-dust are sintered on Dwight-Lloyd machines, the sinter produced being charged into the blast furnaces. At the time of writing (1931), only the concentrator is operating at capacity, due to present world conditions.

In the past several decades, many major equipment manufacturers have ventured into developing new technology for underground hard rock excavation. This includes variety of configurations for full and partial face mobile excavation units. Mining industry prefers machines that can excavate noncircular, flat invert profiles and be able to make tight turns in hard rock. The need to use disc cutters for cutting hard rock has impeded the development of such machines due to the need for gripper system or large mass of a machine to support the force requirements of the disc cutters. Most of the prior attempts have been partially successful and the operations have faced some practical limits and challenges. Among the units that have been successfully used, one can name mobile miner, which was used for rock excavation in some projects. A redesigned mobile miner, called the “Remote Vein Miner,” or RVM, has been developed by Epiroc for underground hard rock mining in Hecla’s Lucky Friday Mine. This equipment potentially opens numerous opportunities for innovation in civil tunneling projects, where the operational flexibility and accessibility of a TBM’s limited tunnel path, design of the profile, and cost are limiting factors. This paper explores the application of the RVM in tunneling projects, its advantages and possible areas of innovation in tunnel planning and design.

"The personal dust monitor (PDM) (model PDM3700), as well as other electronic devices, can cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) which can disrupt the operation of some proximity detection systems (PDSs). A 15 cm (6 inch) minimum separation distance between the miner-wearable component (MWC) of the PDS and the electronic device usually avoids these disruptions, but due to the amount of equipment on a miner’s belt and the method of wearing the PDM in some situations, this distance can be difficult to always reliably maintain. Another method of reducing EMI effects is utilizing magnetic field shielding. The shielding capability of several different materials was investigated by surrounding the PDM with the material and quantifying the EMI. A copper mesh pouch reduced the EMI from a PDM3700, allowing a minimum separation distance of 10 cm (4 inches) instead of 15 cm (6 inches) as shown in a previous study for an unshielded PDM. A MU-metal box had a better shielding effectiveness, as it further reduced the minimum separation distance to less than 7 cm (2.8 inches). Shielding reduced the EMI of the PDM with MU-metal providing better results than the copper mesh. These materials may be beneficial for shielding individual components of the PDM or for constructing a shielded pouch. However, before the advantages of a shielded pouch can be determined, the effects of just the shielding material (metal) on the PDS needs to be quantified. INTRODUCTION According to statistics from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 43 miners have been fatally struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine (CMM) since 1984. In an effort to prevent future striking and pinning fatalities from occurring, proximity detection systems (PDSs) have been developed and are required on all operating CMMs in underground coal mines, with the exception of full-face CMMs, by 2018 (MSHA, 2015)."

The spent catalyst is one of solid waste resources, which contains precious metals with considerable recovery value. However, due to the different compositions of catalyst, the recovery process is difficult. Most of the catalysts are supported by alumina which has good alkali-soluble properties, while platinum is insoluble in alkali. Platinum is enriched by pressurized alkaline solution which is a kind of hydrometallurgical process. The novelty of this study is the separation of alumina and platinum from the spent catalyst and the enrichment of platinum in the solid phase. In this study, a leaching process using NaOH as leaching agent under high temperature and pressure was employed. The effects of alkali concentration, leaching temperature, leaching time, and liquid–solid ratio on leaching efficiency were investigated. The optimum process conditions were determined as follows: alkali concentration of 240 g/L, temperature of 200℃, pressure of 1.20 MPa, time of 1 h, liquid–solid ratio of 5:1. It was concluded that the leaching rate of alumina can reach 99.69%. The content of platinum increased from 0.1749 to 21.12%, the loss of platinum was 3.39%, and the enrichment ratio of platinum increased by 120.82 times. The leaching kinetics of alumina was studied based on the shrinkage core model. The activation energy of alumina leaching is 19.53 kJ/mol, and the leaching process is controlled by chemical reaction. Pressurized alkali solution can not only efficiently leachate alumina from the spent catalyst and enrich platinum, but also reduce the reaction time and increase reaction rate.

INTRODUCTION The particular field of application of machines utilizing air currents as the primary separating medium is in the cleaning of the fine sizes of bituminous coal. Approximately 25,400,000 tons of bituminous coal were cleaned by air machines during 1965. They have not found any application for cleaning anthracite. Since the development and introduction of the first successful commercial pneumatic oscillating machine for cleaning bituminous coal in 19 16, by the Sutton, Steele and Steele Co, Dallas, Texas, and the American Coal Cleaning Corporation, formerly of Welch, W. Va., seven other successful pneumatic coal-cleaning machines have been developed and introduced to the American coal-mining industry: 1. Peale Davis: "Pneumo-Gravity" machine. 2. Arms "Concentrator," oscillating table. 3. Hey1 and Patterson oscillating table. 4. "Stump Air-Flow," pulsating air jig. 5. "Super Airflow," pulsating air jig. 6. Ridge air jig. 7. Phillip air jig. While not all coals can be beneficiated by air washing, the air washing of coals that are easy to clean can be readily proved advantageous. Of all the preparation methods, pneumatic cleaning is the most acceptable from the standpoint of delivered Btu cost. This is based on the premise that a percent of moisture is just as detrimental as a percent of ash. The principle of dry concentration has never been determined with scientific accuracy. To the present time the study has been more of an art than a science. It is possible to forecast the results of wet concentration from a study of the washability characteristics of the raw coal but only after applying rule-of-thumb methods of interpretation to the specific gravity and size distribution can it be ascertained that the raw coal is amenable to dry concentration. Air as a separating medium dates back to biblical times as exemplified in the winnowing of chaff from the grain. However, the same application of air to coal serves merely to blow the dust away and size the remaining particles. Pulsating air was the solution to the problem and largely eliminated the necessity for close screen sizing which was required on early separators. Because of the low density of air, a medium of sufficient density has to be built with the material itself. AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets were produced by high speed rolling (HSR) at 1000 m/min at a low temperature of 100 ?. A high reduction of 72% can be achieved in single pass. At the reduction of 30%, the microstructure was covered by shear bands and twins. When the reduction was increased to 49%, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) was clearly observed in the vicinity of shear bands and twins and the full recrystallization was seen at a reduction of 72%. In order to study the static recrystallization (SRX) behavior on the heavily twinned structure, annealing was then carried out at 200 ? on the as-rolled specimens at the reduction of 30% for different times. Static recrystallized grains were also firstly observed on shear bands and twins after 45 s and the microstructure was mostly fully recrystallized after 1 h annealing with a few retained large elongated un-recrystallized grains. Texture weakening was found during annealing on the heavily twinned specimens by SRX, but not during high speed rolling by DRX. In the present study, effect of DRX and SRX on microstructure and texture evolutions during rolling and annealing were compared.

Crystallization of ammonium paratungstate (APT) is frequently the last effective purification step in producing high-purity tungsten. However, crystallizer mother liquors are often several times higher in tungsten than predicted by the solubility of APT. The formation of heteropoly anions, particularly those containing phosphorus and silicon, is largely responsible. Solubility of tungsten in APT mother liquor can be linearly correlated with the concentration of these and other impurities. The problem can be overcome by direct treatment of the crystallizer feed solution with alum. By appropriate treatment, the aluminum hydroxide flocculates and is easily filtered, resulting in a purified low-aluminum crystallizer feed from which high APT yields can be attained.

No panorama mundial da siderurgia, nota-se a crescente necessidade de redução dos custos de produção do aço e uma das formas de chegar a este objetivo se dá por meio da seleção junto aos fornecedores de refratários, de peças de menor custo, por vezes, advindas de insumos menos nobres. Entretanto, é fundamental que esses materiais continuem garantindo a eficiência operacional. Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a performance de diferentes tipos de luvas refratárias utilizadas em canal EBT (Eccentric Bottom Tapping) quando em operação no forno elétrico a arco. Para a realização de estudo foram selecionadas amostras de luvas refratárias com diferentes concepções. Essas amostras foram caracterizadas por meio de análises químicas, físico-químicas e microestruturais. Os resultados foram relacionados ao desempenho em operação no forno elétrico a arco. A partir dos dados obtidos foi possível concluir que com o conhecimento adequado das propriedades dos materiais, incluindo-se sua microestrutura, e das condições de operação é possível utilizar luvas refratárias de menor custo garantido a segurança e desempenho operacional dos fornos elétricos a arco.

Recientes estudios en la ingeniería de voladura de rocas señalan herramientas modernas, como es el caso del sistema JKSimBlast, que han permitido a Shougang Hierro Perú avanzar en la ingeniería del diseño de voladura de rocas desde el diseño original hasta el actual. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el sistema del diseño, modelamiento, simulación y administración de voladura en la integración de la empresa Shougang Hierro Perú S.A.A. El diseño consiste en modelar cálculos complejos para realizar las modificaciones apropiadas en el diseño y lograr una voladura que convierta al macizo rocoso in-situ en un muckpile de forma apropiada, suelto, con una fragmentación adecuada para los procesos subsecuentes como carguío, acarreo, chancado, molienda etc y que no cause daño por vibración e impacto por presión de onda aérea al entorno de la mina.
