The work presented in this paper mainly involves two parts. Firstly, the fundamental characteristics of the high pressure carbon dioxide gas fracturing technique (CO2 technique), including, a proposed method of TNT equivalence calculation, which is used to calculate the TNT equivalence of discharge of CO2 technique, and the comparison of the explosion volume generated by dynamite and expansion volume of liquid carbon dioxide is conducted to show the differences of fragmentation capacity between the two of them. Secondly, the coal seam fragmentation mechanisms of CO2 technique are proposed, including, 1) Gas jet cutting and penetration by shaped charge, 2) Gas volume expansion by changing phases of carbon dioxide, 3) Coal seam softening by destress blasting and 4) Coal seam fragmentation by discharge vibration, associating with the mechanisms, the equations for calculating fragmentation radius are developed and verified.

. F. W. SPERR, JR.,* Pittsburgh, Pa.--Mr. Malcolmson states that the Carbocoal process produces ammonium sulfate in excess of that normally recovered in the ordinary byproduct coke process. Table 3 indicates that 20,000 to 25,000 lb. of sulfate of ammonia are obtained in carbonizing 1000 tons of Clinchfield coal. This is a high-grade coal and yields from 26 to 28 lb. of ammonium sulfate per ton in a modern byproduct coke oven. On the next page, 21 lb. is stated as the yield of ammonium sulfate per short ton of raw coal; this is less than the average production from any well operated byproduct coke-oven plant treating coal of the character usually coked, in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The statement as to the comparative yields of light oil is somewhat misleading in view of the results obtained during the past year or two by the more modern byproduct coke plants. The plants put in operation by the H. Koppers Co., during the past two years, are producing about 3.5 gal. of light oil per short ton of coal, and several of these plants are producing more than 4 gal. per ton. The yield of pure toluene runs from 0.45 gal. to 0.55 gal. per ton. .The quality of the light oil .obtained from the Carbocoal process is of much greater importance than would be inferred by one not closely familiar with the subject. The presence of paraffins in the benzol and toluol fractions seriously detracts from their commercial value; the benzol and toluol fractions derived fro in the Carbocoal process contain about 50 per cent, of paraffins. It should be thoroughly understood what these paraffins are. They are simply hydrocarbons that go to make up ordinary petroleum, and if a successful method for the removal of paraffins from benzol and toluol has been developed, this can at once be applied to several well known processes by which benzol and toluol can be made directly from petroleum, which have as yet been total failures on account of the contamination of these products by paraffins.

This paper describes a new computer program which can significantly increase the Net Present Value of either an open cut or underground mine by optimising the cut-offs used during the operating life of the mine. It was developed over a period of about three years by Whittle Programming Pty Ltd of Melbourne, Australia. Several authors have contributed to the theory behind this work, but the ideas were further developed, consolidated, and clearly explained by Lane (1988). It was this book that triggered the development of the new program. The paper starts with an explanation of the theory behind this type of optimisation, and then goes on to describe the computer methods used to optimise the different parts of the problem.

Iron oxides are unique in that they are the only significant colored mineral found in a natural state suitable for use as a pigment after being pulverized to pigmentary size. The current world production of iron oxide pigments is estimated by the author to be between 499 and 590 kt (550,000 and 650,000 st) based on 1979 data. The fact that highly colored natural deposits of iron ore are found throughout the world accounts for its use in prehistoric man's artistic cave paintings. These early artists did not realize that they had established man's first paint test fence which now has some 20,000 years of exposure. In addition to abundance, constituting about 7 % of the earth's crust, iron oxides have the advantages of low cost, permanency, and are not toxic. Through the centuries, succeeding civilizations have utilized iron oxides as a major source for decoration and protection when coloring was desired. In the last century the chemical industry has improved on nature by developing a complete range of synthetic iron oxide pigments which surpass the pigments produced from natural iron ores in uniformity, color quality, and chemical purity. In the United States alone, the combined production of natural and synthetic iron oxides produced sales of over $28,000,000 in 1970 (Stipp, 1970) and increasing to $97 million by 1980 (Spinrad, 1980). Nomenclature With the increasing importance of the synthetic iron oxides it is necessary to make a distinction between the natural or mineral pigments and the synthetic pigments. Natural pigments are those products which are derived from selected ores and should not be confused with iron ores mined for steel production. Iron ores that are mined for steel must be capable of being mined and reduced to iron on a commercial basis. These ores are selected on the basis of iron content and processing economics. It is therefore unusual when iron ores for steel production are suitable for use as mineral pigments. Natural pigment ore sources are selected for their special physical-chemical properties and can command a premium price. Synthetic pigments, and in this instance iron oxides, are those pigments produced from basic chemicals. Through chemical synthesis pigmentary sized particles are produced as opposed to comminution, the major procedure common to all natural iron oxide pigments. Classification An important characteristic of a pigment is its color and, therefore, a logical separation can be made on this basis. A. Yellow Iron Oxide Pigments 1. The statistical nature of the variability in detonation times of pyrotechnic delays is discussed, and how to evaluate the probability of required detonation intervals is shown. Some methods (analytical and stochastic) are given for designing blasts to ensure that any adverse effects on the variability in the delays is taken into account and minimised. Using computer models of blasts, detonation simulations can be used to check the initiation sequence for the probability of sequence reversals, indicating areas of high blast damage potential. Charge consumption rates, which relate directly to the resulting vibration levels, can be examined for their susceptibility to variation from delay variability. Models that synthesize vibration waveforms for production blasts, when taking delay variability into account, indicate the difficulty in vibration level prediction.

"Arsenic-gold bearing ores are used as flux in smelting or are leached to extract gold. The main aim is to decrease the arsenic content in processed materials and to break up the ore lattice, thus liberating the gold. Some regulations were established by authorities for sulfidizing of arsenic bearing compounds in a presence of pyrite and for oxidation of ores and concentrates in the presence of soda.This article analyses the results of laboratory and pilot plant testing of dissociating and oxidizing roasting of gold-arsenic bearing concentrates. During the dissociation roasting under vacuum, arsenic is sublimated into elemental and sulfide forms. This process allows for the minimization of the negative influence on the environment, but requires costly engineering solutions. Roasting in a limited quantity of oxygen in the gaseous phase makes it possible to sublimate arsenic in the form of oxides and sulfides and it may be carried out in fluid bed furnaces.Oxidizing roasting of the concentrates in the presence of soda results in formation of water-soluble compounds and forces practically all arsenic and sulfur to remain in the cinder."

Electroslag remelting is widely used to produce various special steels, mainly because of its ability to provide high cleanliness and excellent homogeneity of ingot. Undoubtedly an optimal slag plays a key role in removing inclusions and enhancing the mechanical properties of a specific special steel. In order to improve the metallurgical performance of the slag in electroslag refining of die steel, a variety of slags have already been developed using traditional trial-and-error methods. Nonetheless, these slags may not be inherently optimal for the specific requirements of actual die steel refining processes. In this work, we have designed a CaF2-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-MgO quinary slag system using genetic algorithms method aiming to remove the existing large size inclusions (D and Ds type) in high quality die steel. The comprehensive effects of five components (CaF2, CaO, Al2O3, SiO2 and MgO) were studied based on existing fundamental theory. The slag composition was screened considering the parameters such as melting point, electrical conductivity, calcium ion concentration, and appropriate viscosity etc. Furthermore, the candidate optimal slag was applied in the industrial production of die steel by electroslag remelting method. The detection results indicate that majority large inclusions (D and Ds type) have been successfully removed, showing significant advantage to traditional slags. This result has demonstrated the genetic method to be efficient and reliable. In addition, depending on the personalised demand of other steel and alloys, this method allows for the adjustment of the screening frameworks and processes to develop the candidate optimal slags. This method has not been reported previously in the field of electroslag composition design, and compared with the traditional trial-and-error method, the new method will save a lot of time and experimental costs.

Using electrochemical techniques it was demonstrated that bioleaching of gold from refractory pyritic ores is a complex phenomenon. Many intermediate electrochemical reactions were found to be involved in the oxidation of pyrite, using cyclic voltammetry and carbon paste-pyrite containing electrode. Furthermore, the oxidation process was controlled by solid-state diffusion as suggested by chronoamperometric and chronopotentiometric measurements. Using the Sand's approach, the activation energy of solid-state diffusion was found to be = 22.4 kJ. After bioleaching, 96% gold was extracted from the leach resi¬due with a thiourea solution in 1 hour. A generalized model for the mechanism of pyrite oxidation has been presented.

During one, what had been a colonial agricultural economy began to industrialize; water power, then steam after 1794, were the energy sources; coal and iron were the essential ingredients. The second stage started after 1850; aided by rich and diverse mineral resources, the country began its transition from the Iron Age to the Age of Metals. Early civilizations had been built on stone, and fairly high levels were sustained on iron. But the spectacular advances in the past century in communication, in construction, in transportation by sea, rail, land and air, and in much that characterizes modern civilization have depended increasingly on the use of the complete metallic and nonmetallic resources of the earth's crust. Thus it was appropriate to define the Industrial Revolution as “the period during which man's relationship to natural resources became utterly changed”, 1 with minerals playing a major and indispensable role. But we are now becoming aware that the relationship of man to natural resources must change again. On every hand the dangers inherent in the contamination of land, sea and air by the wastes of civilization are becoming apparent. And from the growing realization that mineral wealth is finite must eventually come other far reaching changes in mineral use and distribution. For on the scale of centuries we cannot continue to exploit mineral resources even at present rates, let alone at expanded rates, without eventual depletion of the more abundant resources, and early exhaustion of the less abundant. The purposes of this Bureau of Mines report are to review the history of the domestic offshore hydrocarbon production; to project offshore oil and lease condensate production from 1971 through 1985; and to show the impact of offshore development on the onshore segment of the petroleum industry. Since 1954, offshore production has provided an increasingly larger portion of the domestic oil production. Domestic offshore oil and lease condensate production has increased from about 2.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 16.7 pct in 1970. Likewise, marketed gas production has increased from 1.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 15.0 pct in 1970. The past performance of exploration, leasing, development, and production of the offshore petroleum industry was used to make projections of offshore oil production. A comparison between onshore and offshore operations was also made. Assuming a tentative Department of the Interior offshore leasing schedule is completed by 1980, the authors estimate that by 1985, about 30 pct of domestic crude oil and lease condensate production from the lower 48 States will come from offshore areas. Currently, leasing of Federal offshore areas has been delayed due to environmental considerations. The rate at which off-shore hydrocarbons will enter the energy market will depend, to a large extent, on how soon environmental considerations are resolved. Assuming that offshore leasing will resume in the near future, U.S. offshore production of crude oil and lease condensate should be about 934 million barrels in 1985.

The laboratory investigations which are necessary to evaluate the mineral processing effectiveness usually include density separation of narrow size fraction of the feed and one of the products. In each size - density fractions the content of valuable mineral has to be determined. These data and yield in each size - density fraction can be specified by a matrix of partition coefficients. They are counterparts of recoveries. These coefficients can be compared with the mean recoveries at each density or size fraction or the total recovery, to determine which density - size fractions are processed in the best or worst way. The basic categories are: vector of metal content l _i 1711, 7t2, òòò, ltM I ò vector of particle size distribution x = I d1, d2, ..., dN I ò matrix of partition coefficients P11, P12, Pi N P _ P21, P22, ..., P2 N PM1 PM2..., PMN These three conceptions allow one to determine all the basic metallurgical parameters of a mineral processing unit. Losses of valuable mineral are connected with: ò mineralogical composition of the ore (types of minerals, their properties, dissemination, crystallochemical affinity, type and properties of gangue minerals), ò applied technology and technical equipment (beneficiation as a stochastic process, processing methods, process control, intergrowth liberation, water quality). Examples of application of the analytical method proposed are given for zinc - lead and coal processing plants.

Particles for heap leaching in conventional circuits are prepared using Cone crushers. Cone crushers are used to crush the ore to the size range between 12-25 mm for heap leaching operations. Leaching from these relatively coarse particles occurs only at the surface and in subsurface regions, which are accessible from the surface by cracks and pores. Since leaching is active in accessible areas, the method of comminution that forms multiple cracks and pores would offer an advantage for heap leach. An investigation was performed in this study to assess if the HPGR forms more cracks and pores than a Cone crusher. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used to characterize the degree of cracks and pores formed by these two comminution devices that can be used for heap leaching feed preparation. In order to compare the effect of the comminution method on crack network generation, a bulk sample of the zinc ore was crushed by the HPGR at three different pressure settings (45, 95 and 120 bar), the sample ore was also crushed with a Cone crusher for comparison purposes. Products from the Cone crusher and HPGR experiment were then screened into five size fractions ((-25 +19), (-19+16), (-16+9.5), (-9.5+5), (-5+4.75) mm), Subsamples from the ((-25 +19), (-16+9.5), (-5+4.75) mm) size fractions were analysed. The spatial distribution of the crack network of sphalerite particles was characterized using a highresolution industrial X-ray CT system. This paper describes the use of image analysis techniques including image segmentation, which uses a combination of thresholding and other methods to characterize and quantify crack and mineral dissemination in the sphalerite particles after comminution with the HPGR and Cone crusher. The results are validated with those obtained using traditional techniques such as physical gas (with N2) adsorption, mercury intrusion porosimetry, SEM and QEMSCAN.

OUR present-day geological surveys show that 36 of our States are underlain with bituminous coal, covering a total area of 496,709 square miles. The North American continent possesses 69 per cent of the world's coal reserves, with the United States alone having an estimated 55 per cent. The American coal reserves, in tons, are calculated to he about 3,500,000,000,000 tons, of which we have exhausted about 1 to 1 1/2 per cent. If this coal were mined at the rate of the 1918 production-a record output of 579;000,000 tons-it would not be depleted for 4,000 years. The more easily accessible and high-grade coals would obviously be consumed much before this; some estimates are 100 years. The natural progress of the nation's industries up to 1910 encouraged on every hand the development of new mines, especially where cheap and easy access to coal measures was coupled with short hauls to the consumer. Over-development resulted, which is perhaps today one of the fundamental causes for the many difficulties faced by the coal industry, which is highly competitive; about 70 per cent of the production cost is labor. A comprehensive analysisof rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging, interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcorc is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure.

In our work as health physicists*, we do a lot of public speaking and interaction with the public on issues related to development of uranium mining and milling (?uranium recovery?) in the US. Understandingly, the public has important concerns about this. Accordingly, this paper is presented in a ?question and answer? format in which we have tried to capture what are some of the most common concerns we hear from citizens and address them. We have attempted to do so based on the best scientific information we have, representing information well documented in peer-reviewed scientific literature and consensus positions from both national and international scientific standard setting bodies and related committees. We have included some of the more important of these scientifically-based references to support the information provided. The Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has had occasion from time to time to examine rocks, ores and concentrates from the Yatukoula goldfield, Fiji. The results of the examinations have been supplied as Mineragraphic Reports and have been supplementary to various investigations carried out by the mining companies on ore treatment, or by visiting geologists on the nature of the rocks and lodes. The presence of tellurides was determined in 1935, though incorrectly as nagyagite. The general absence of lead, except in traces, was soon afterwards discovered, and it came to be recognised as the mines were opened up that the chief telluride minerals on the field were sylvanite and native tellurium. Specimens of the tellurides have been provided from time to time by E. G. Theodore, Managing Director of the Emperor Mines Ltd., and of the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines N.L., and further material was recently obtained, as the result of a visit to the field at the invitation of Mr. Theodore.The aim of this paper is to describe the occurrence of the tellurides in these specimens. There are many factors which affect the gold cyanidation mechanism— mineral composition, free cyanide and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations, heavy metal additions, etc. This study combines electrochemistry and surface analysis methods to examine the effectiveness of the above factors on gold cyanidation process. Three gold ore samples were used in this study. Sample 1 was a pyrite concentrate, contained mercury and silver. Sample 2 also contained sulfide minerals, including galena. Sample 3 contained pyrite with sphalerite and galena. In the case of samples 1 and 2, the presence of heavy metals enhanced gold cyanidation kinetics, though the addition of higher DO was not effective on improving the kinetics. Sample 3 showed an opposite behavior: the kinetics was not enhanced by galena, because of its relatively small amount, however, the use of higher DO made improvement in the gold leaching kinetics, likely caused by iron species generated by pyrite oxidation.

Preparation and Use.—Magnesite is an important refractory in open-hearth, heating, and electric furnaces for steel-making and in many of those employed in the metallurgy of copper and lead. It is sold in the form of brick, finely ground "furnace magnesite" for bricklaying, and dead-burned grains for making and repairing furnace bottoms. The latter are a mixture of granules varying in size from pieces of about 5/8 in. (1.6 cm.) diameter to very fine but sandy particles. Dead-burned magnesite results from calcining the crude or lightly burned mineral at a temperaturc that will not merely drive off practically all the CO2, but will also cause sintering of the particles. During this process the pieces shrink considerably and become hard, dense, and inert to atmospheric moisture and CO2; under-burned material, on the other hand, will hydrate on exposure to the air. A small percentage of ferric oxide seems to be necessary for the production of a satisfactory sinter; from 4.5 to 8 per cent. in the dead-burned grains is considered the most desirable amount. Dolomite has been little used for brickmaking in the United States, but it is prepared for use in the granular condition calcined or "double-burned" and is the principal ingredient of several materials offered for sale under various trade names for refractory purposes. Dolomitic refractories are almost wholly confined to the open-hearth and electric furnaces, where they are used for fettling and as substitutes for magnesite. Much more magnesite and dolomite are used for basic open-hearth steel-making than for all other refractory purposes. The hearth of the furnace is usually built up of magnesite brick and dead-burned grain magnesite so laid that the brick base is protected by a working bottom of the granular material. The latter is sintered into place in layers 1/2 to 1 in: (1.25 to 2.5 cm.) thick to a total depth of 12 to 18 in. (30 to 45 cm.) at the center of the furnace. After each heat, burned dolomite is thrown against the banks as high as it will stick, and all holes in the bottom are Glled. The Bureau of Mines has developed a system using a high-speed electropneumatic mechanism for the rapid (grab) sampling of dusts and gases during an explosion. The sampling system consists of an aluminum housing that incorporates two 30-cm3 preevacuated glass vials with rubber septums. Upon actuation, the sampling probe needle is driven through the septum with a pressurized air pulse, filling the tube with gas and dust from the mine explosion. After a predetermined time, the sampling probe needle is retracted by a second high-pressure air pulse to its normal (quiescent) state, allowing the sampling tube to reseal. The onset and the duration of sampling are independently variable and controlled by a time-delay relay package. This technique enables the monitoring of pyrolysis-charring in coal particles and the generation and combustion of the pyrolysis vapors in both large- and small- scale explosions. The following results were obtained from full-scale dust explosion tests at the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Laboratory: (1) Gas sampling of the leading edge of the flame front shows the large concentration changes, characteristic of the flame front; (2) gas samples taken entirely in the flame zone consist of pyrolysis and combustion products with very low residual oxygen; and (3) the particles collected in the flame zone show signs of extensive pyrolysis and charring.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the remaining lode gold endowment of eight mining districts in Alaska using historic production data. A log-arithmic model of cumulative tonnage of ore processed versus cumulative grade was applied to the following districts: Chichagof, Fairbanks, Homer, Hope-Seward, Juneau, Ketchikan, Prince William Sound, and Willow Creek. To assess the remaining endowment, a computerized production data base was compiled from Bureau records. These data were aggregated in 5-yr intervals for each district. Data were sorted in order of declining grade, and log cumulative grade was plotted against log cumulative tonnage. Linear regression was performed on the data for each district. The linear equation for each curve was used to predict remaining endowment at a limiting mining grade. Based on conservative extrapolation of the grade-tonnage curves, a substantial total endowment of 8,415,100 tr oz of gold remains in the eight districts. The districts with the greatest remaining endowment are the Juneau, Chichagof, Fairbanks, and Willow Creek Districts.
