X-ray fluorescence analytical techniques are fairly well established in the mining and metallurgical industries. In recent years, instruments utilizing radioactive isotopes have been developed which, owing to their more compact size, greater reliability and independence of substantial power supplies, are often preferred to X-ray tube installations. Analyses can now readily be carried out in the field, on the factory floor and in otherwise difficult locations. This paper describes many examples of radioisotope X-ray fluorescence for the analysis of metallic minerals, finished metals and alloys and also for the continuous measurement of metallic coatings, such as tin and zinc, on steel. Radiation scatter techniques are also described for certain analyses and for thickness and density measurements.

Anglo American Corporation and the University of British Columbia have developed a medium-temperature oxygen pressure leaching process for the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates in an acid-sulphate system (AAC/UBC process). Leaching is performed at 150°C and surfactants are added to disperse molten elemental sulphur from the unreacted sulphide surface to prevent liquid sulphur occlusion. Copper extractions of over 95% and elemental sulphur yields of around 60% were observed over a 2-hour average residence time in a continuous pilot autoclave. Sporadic blockages occurring under continuous conditions were found to be caused by the accumulation of molten elemental sulphur mixed with unreacted sulphide mineral. A batch programme of experimentation was undertaken to establish the reason for this phenomenon. Batch experiments were conducted at low pulp densities on concentrate samples with narrow size distributions and at similar solution compositions to those experienced in the pilot autoclave. The overall rate of chalcopyrite oxidation was shown, under approximately constant solution composition, to be a strong function of the total available mineral surface area. Initial copper extraction rates followed the shrinking particle kinetic model under intrinsic surface control. Deviation from shrinking particle kinetics was however observed after a certain oxidation time. Secondary electron images identified small (typically less than 20 µm) sulphur conglomerates at the point of deviation, which 'collected' unreacted chalcopyrite mineral particles and lowered the total mineral surface area available for oxidation. These sulphur clusters are thought to be the precursor for blockages experienced in the continuous pilot autoclave. These results emphasised the importance of fine grinding (P80 5-20 µm) and suggest that shorter residence times may minimise the formation of sulphur conglomerates in a continuous autoclave operating at medium temperature.

The purpose of this investigation was to find whether the moduli of elasticity obtained were the same for the following methods : ( 1 ) Deformation of a borehole in a prism subjected to uniaxial stress ; ( 2 ) deflection of a thin beam of uniform cross section uniformly loaded ; ( 3 ) sonic - pulse velocity measurements , and ( 4 ) strain measurements on a prism under uniaxial stress . The rock tested was chosen for its good elastic behavior and relatively good homogeneity and elastic isotropism . The same rock was used for all methods . Results indicate that for given environmental and stress conditions the moduli obtained by each of the four methods check one another within the limits of experimental error and that the differences introduced which are characteristic for each method are smaller than physical variations within the rock tested .

Introduction By far the largest part of the money raised for mining is raised by honest and legitimate means; but a not inconsiderable amount is raised by fraudulent sales methods. It will be conceded without argument that the greatest menace to the mining business is the fraudulent promoter. The sale of worthless mining stocks to the public by high-pressure. salesmen, house to house canvassers, telephone campaigns, fraudulent use of the mails, fraudulent statements, and reloading, has seriously prejudiced the public against even legitimate mining. A very small percentage of the funds raised by such fraudulent means is ever spent on the property, but instead is absorbed by the promoter in illegitimate' profits, enormous commissions, high office rents, and other expenditures, and is just so much subtracted from the fund which the legitimate developer needs to bring new mines to the point of production. The mining fraternity has been at fault in that, while they recognized this situation, they made no adequate attempt to rectify it. They knew that these fraudulent practises were conducted by parasites who attached themselves to the mining business in boom times and claimed to be part and parcel of it, but who were merely professional salesmen and promoters who, when there was not a mining boom, were selling sky-line real-estate, worthless oil stocks, or fraudulent securities which happened to be popular with the public. While mining people had this distinction well in mind, the public did not differentiate between the crooked promoter temporarily selling fraudulent mining stock and the honest promoter who made mining finance his life work; and we did little to make this distinction clear to the public or to sweep these money grabbers out of our house. The historic boom of 1927-8 and '29 brought with it the usual crop of crooked mining promoters, and the scandals resulting from their operations forced the Governments into the enactment of laws to attempt to protect the gullible public against the operations of these meanest of thieves and to appease public clamour.

Electrowinning consumes a substantial amount of electrical energy, and owing to the ever-increasing unit cost of electrical power there is a need to improve current efficiency in the process. This research was carried out to design a continuous quality improvement framework for improving electrowinning current efficiency by applying statistical process control (SPC) on an online industrial copper electrowinning operation. A sequential mixed research methodology was applied and a statistical software package utilized for analysing data. It was concluded that metallurgical short-circuits (hotspots) had the most significant effect on current efficiency. Bringing hotspots under statistical control resulted in a 5.40% improvement in current efficiency, which is equivalent to approximately 74 t of 99.999% pure grade A copper cathode production over a period of 1.5 months.

La difícil geografía de la ubicación de las minas de la Sierra no permite un espacio suficiente para el almacenamiento de relaves provenientes de las plantas concentradoras, generando áreas con muros costosos que permitan el transporte del relave. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del texto describe las medidas preventivas para resolver el problema de la falta de espacio para el relave de las concentradoras, al tiempo que evita la contaminación del rio Huallaga y se afecte las instalaciones agrícolas, industriales y sanitarias encontradas bajo las canchas de almacenamiento. Así, el problema de relaves en Atacocha se resolvió en dos etapas: la primera, utiliza los 1000 metros de largo del Río Huallaga, para desviarlo hacia un túnel de 1326 metros de largo, obteniendo un espacio para 2, 700, 000 T.M. de relaves, por un período de 7 años aproximadamente. La segunda etapa busca ejecutar el proyecto de Malauchaca, donde la confluencia del torrente de Ticlacayan con el río Huallaga, permitirá el desvío del río Huallaga sobre su margen izquierda por un túnel de 600 metros y en la orilla izquierda del torrente de Ticlacayán se construirá un muro de concreto, que cruzará el lecho del Huallaga hasta muy cerca de la salida del túnel, obteniendo un espacio de 900 metros en la quebrada del Huallaga y de 700 metros en la del Ticlacayán. A esto se suman las precauciones consideradas en los depósitos de relaves de cancha, tales como el control exhaustivo del chorro dentro del murete, la limpieza del rebose, separación del chorro con el rebose, tiempo de operación, cálculo del área de la cancha, construcción del murete, distancia de canchas de la concentradora y cierre de grietas en el período de descanso de las canchas.

THE increased use of heat-resistant alloys (26 per cent Cr, 12 per cent Ni; 16 per cent Cr, 35 per cent Ni; 12 per cent Cr, 60 per cent Ni; etc.) in recent years has been accompanied by continued demands by the consumer for improvement in properties. The manufacturers of these materials, of necessity, have resorted to more critical studies of the basic causes of variations in fundamental properties. To keep pace with the need for augmented information, previous techniques of investigation have been refined and new test methods and instruments created. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the apparatus, experimental technique and precision of measurement that were employed in the exploration of properties of heat-resistant alloy presented in a companion paper.? The detailed precautions in experimental procedure essential for attainment of accurate and comparable data at elevated temperatures cannot be too highly emphasized. THE CREEP TEST Since the fundamental concepts of creep testing have been recognized for the past 20 years, present interest is restricted to refinements in equipment and experimental procedure. The creep-test laboratory constructed for the American Brake Shoe and Foundry Co. is designed to permit 1000-hr. tests in the temperature range of 1200° to 2200°F. with a choice of applied stress extending from 50 to 50,000 lb. per sq. in. in increments of 50 lb. per sq. in. To simplify the calculation of weight combinations, the loading beams (Fig. I) are provided with counterweights to eliminate the tare. The precision of the knife-edges (10.1 ratio) is such that a 10-gram weight placed on the upper specimen grip will be exactly balanced by a 1-gram weight attached to the loading shackle. Check of the loading weights proved the maximum error to be 0.06 per cent. Axial alignment is provided by crossed knife-edges in the grip seats. The furnaces are similar in design to those of Crane and Company, Battelle Memorial Institute, and the U.S. Steel Corporation. An 80 per cent Pt, 20 per cent Rh No. 19 B. and S. gauge wire is used as the heating element. The details of construction are shown in the radiograph reproduced in Fig. 2. The windings are held in place on an alundum tube with alundum cement; the distribution of turns is adjusted to give a maximum temperature gradient of ± 1°F. over a 4-in. gauge length (Fig. 3). Electro recovery by amalgam methods was investigated to determine the feasibility of recovering pure cadmium from cadmium sponge produced during purification of zinc electrolyte at electrolytic zinc plants . Actual material used in this work was air- oxidized cadmium sponge . An acid rinse and zinc displacement technique was developed to amalgamate this oxidized cadmium . ( In - plant use of the recovery process would probably not require this step because of the fresh state of the sponge . ) Zinc was completely removed from amalgamated sponge by selective oxidation with air . Zinc - free cadmium amalgam was circulated by an electromagnetic pump through an electrolytic cell where cadmium of 99.9+ percent purity was electrodeposited onto a rotating aluminum cathode . Polarographic methods were developed for determining cadmium and zinc in mercury and in sulfuric acid solution .

Individual mineral cyclone performance curves were determined for the four major minerals at two lead-zinc concentrators. Sizing was by screen and cyclosizer down to approximately 10 um, with lead , zinc and iron as saying of each size fraction. The performance curves were similar in shape and located according to the mineral specific gravity, Pm. The curves displayed a discontinuity at the fine end and a magnitude of short-circuiting of fines to the underflow which increased with Pm. Mass fraction of water to the underflow was only a guide to this short-circuiting. Sharpness of separation seemed in dependent of Pm. An inflection in the over-all performance curve was shown to be a consequence of the individual component mineral performance. A general relationship was observed showing that the flow regime of classification changed from laminar/ intermediate to turbulent with increasing cyclone feed size. Individual mineral size reduction for the four major minerals at one of the concentrators was also determined. Size reduction of the silica was greater than that of the galena, in contradiction to their accepted relative grind-ability. The observation did correlate with silica being much coarser than the galena in the feed to the ball mill. It is suggested that the silica acted as a buffer to the galena.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) ground control research program includes several projects focused on developing design criteria for yielding-pillar-based longwall gate road systems. As part of this program, mining practices at the Sunnyside Mines, Sunnyside Reclamation and Salvage Co., Sunnyside, UT, are being documented to preserve the long history of yield pillar system evolution on the property. Published information describing the specific in-mine performance of the numerous gate road configurations utilized at the Sunnyside Mines is very limited. To overcome this deficit, USBM personnel interviewed 30 longtime mine employees representing nearly 700 years of mining experience at the Sunnyside operations. Mining conditions in 12 specific areas in the Nos. 1, 2, and 3 Mines were discussed in the interviews. Also, broad topics such as general mining practices, safety, and geology were often addressed during the discussions. Comprising the body of this report is an extensive record of the events and conditions experienced while mining the identified areas. In addition, eight significant conclusions were developed that accurately summarize the general opinions of the interviewed personnel regarding mining conditions and practices at Sunnyside.

"There is concern that hydraulic fracturing (HF) near an existing critically stressed fault could trigger slip and generate a seismic event of significance. To this end, a mathematical discontinuum model representing a naturally fractured rock (NFR) mass containing a fault is created, and fault slip response to fluid injection is studied. UDECTM is used as a Discrete Element Method (DEM) approach to define the seismic moment, and also to assess the influence of injection and slip on further shear slip propagation. In most of the simulations, slip and dilation take place along a number of oriented fracture surfaces, so it is reasonable to assume that in a real case, microseimic emissions would accompany each slip “event”. The moment magnitude scale (Mw) is used to measure the size of the microseismic event in terms of the energy released. Seismic moment is a measure of the total energy (work) released during a seismic event and is used to measure its size. From another aspect, the injection energy is calculated as the total energy required for achieving the hydraulic fracturing; this is viewed as energy to open fractures against the ambient stress field and much of it is potential stored energy that can be released and create discontinuities (work of fracture), deformations (W=F·d), heat and radiated seismic energy. A small amount of the total released energy is transformed to radiated seismic energy and another small amount results in tensile fractures. Fracture energy is used to calculate the work required to create fracture surfaces. Comparing the energy release by fracturing or seismic events indicates their contribution to the total amount of released energy or total work. The amount of energy associated with the stick-slip event is small compared with the overall work done to generate the distortions (i.e. increases in aperture by forcing them open) in the rock mass, and much of the energy in slip is lost as heat from the plastic deformation, rather than as radiated seismic energy.Microseismic monitoring shows the spatial distribution and magnitude of seismicity associated with slip of bedding planes and natural and incipient fractures. Work calculations have been undertaken to look at the various sources of energy storage (elastic strain energy) or dissipation (slip), and likely the energy losses from viscous dissipation could be addressed as well, helping to clarify HF processes in NFRs."

We have had a major role in powering our nation through the 20th century ... but many today do not understand that role nor do they know that 56% of our nation's electricity today comes from coal. Corporate communications, marketing, and public relations must be a high priority of our industry if we are to survive in the society of the 21st century as a viable energy option for powering our nation. The time to start is now. The place to start is locally. The way to strengthen local and regional efforts is to network on a regional and national level with associations who have the ability and the will to develop effective communications strategies. Introduction The Minnkota Power Systems is a regional association of 26 electrical suppliers. Serving more than 96,000 customers in a 34,500 square mile service area in Minnesota and North Dakota, the association includes 12 municipal utilities, 12 distribution cooperatives, a municipal power agency, and a generation and transmission cooperative. The Minnkota Power Systems generating capacity totals 613 megawatts, and 83% of it is fired by lignite coal. On an annual basis, 80% of our total energy is derived from coal. We are proud of our long association with the coal industry. Our pride shows in the very visible role that coal plays in our marketing and public relations efforts. In 1993, the Minnkota Power Systems had one of the lowest wholesale rates in the country, at 3.1 cents per kWh. Average residential rates were 5.8 cents per kWh. THE object of this investigation was to determine with a vertical magnetic variometer the extent of the titaniferous ore deposit that occurs not far from Ivry in Terrebonne County, Quebec, about 70 miles north of Montreal. The Ivry mine, on lots 37 and 38 of range V, Beres-ford township, Quebec, is one of the largest and most accessible to transportation of the deposits of ilmenite in Quebec. The ore consists of an aggregate of ilmenite anhedra serving as host for numerous fine plaques of hematite. No magnetite is known from any occurrence near this lot, and in this way the deposit differs from many others that contain a large percentage of magnetite with the ilmenite. The deposit at Ivry thus has much lower magnetic susceptibility than those containing abun-dant magnetite, and a sensitive magnetometer was necessary for the work, although a body of magnetite with ilmenite about a mile from the Ivry mine was successfully prospected with a dip needle. The principal orebody is exposed in a quarry known as the Ivry mine, from which about 16,000 tons of ore have been shipped. Small exposures of ilmenite isolated by drift serve to show the presence at the surface of some of the bodies indicated by the magnetometer,- but most of the hill is covered with glacial till and second growth hardwood. At the lower levels the till gives place to fluvioglacial sands and gravels from which the forest has been cleared. The increasing thickness of the sand and gravel as the hill descends makes the tracing outward of the deposits from the rocky knob of anorthosite a difficult matter. Within the orebodies too, some masses of anorthosite persist, which may account for some local irregularities. Fig. 1 is a photomicrograph, taken by reflected light, of a typical specimen of the ore. The dark patches are hematite and the light parts are ilmenite. No trace of magnetite was found. Fig. 2 is a photo-micrograph of a thin section of the country rock showing the texture of the anorthosite. The mean of four analyses quoted by Robinson1 is: titanium, 19.26 per cent; iron 45:41 per cent.

In 1980, the Bureau of Mines surveyed a group of mine seals in Randolph County, WV, to evaluate their effectiveness for reducing toxic pollutants in mine water discharges. The survey focused on 11 block wet mine seals, but mine seals of several other types were also examined. The seals were installed in 1966 and 1967 in abandoned drift portals by the Federal Water Quality Administration (FWQA), a predecessor of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines and other Federal and State agencies, in a project known as Elkins Mine Drainage Pollution Control Demonstration Project. The seals were designed to prevent air from entering the mine portals while allowing mine water to flow out. It was believed that by preventing air from entering inactive or abandoned mines, the formation of toxic pollutants and acid mine drainage (AMD) could be reduced. Evaluation of the seals was based on water flow measurements, water analyses, and visual observations. The Bureau's 1980 data were compared with past data collected by the EPA. Several leaks and failures were observed in the clay seals, as evidenced by apparent blowouts and the absence of vegetation where the mine water surfaced. Analyses of the 1980 data indicated some improvement in the quality of water discharged from many of the wet air seals.

The Southeast Missouri lead district, located about 70 miles south of St. Louis, embraces four important sub-districts and several minor ones. The important sub-districts, in order of discovery, are Mine La Motte, the Old Lead Belt, Indian Creek, and the Viburnum Lead Belt. Descriptions that follow are of geology and ore deposits of the Old Lead Belt. The ore deposits are stratiform in character and are localized in a narrow carbonate bar and algal reef environment on the flanks of exposed Precambrian of the St. Francois Mountains. Ore structures include a variety of primary depositional features such as pinchout zones, disconformities, ridge structures, reefs, and submarine gravity slides. Faulting, prior to and during ore deposition, "prepared" the host rock and strongly fractured areas are mineralized much more intensively and extensively than unfractured parts of the same sedimentary structures. The deposits are epigenetic in character. Mineralization is believed to have occurred at the time that post-lower Ordovician faulting took place. The mineralizing solutions are believed to be concentrated brines from adjacent basins that moved out of the basins during faulting, uplift, and erosion of the St. Francois positive area.

This report describes the timed release analysis technique that was developed to serve as a tool for assessing the froth flotation cleaning potentials of fine-size coals. Using this developed technique, 16 coals from 10 different coalbeds were tested. All of the coals included in this study were quite amenable to froth flotation with float coal yields ranging from 80.7 to 99.5 percentage points. Float-and-sink analyses of the coals tested are shown to be of limited value in predicting froth flotation cleaning potential. Generally the float-and-sink analyses indicated a better product could be obtained than froth flotation could provide; although, in four of the coals tested froth flotation results were superior to those expected from the gravimetric analysis. The fixed carbon content of the samples collected was found to correlate with the floatability of the coals. The higher rank coals were the most readily floatable coals while the lower rank coals did not respond quite as well to flotation.

This study covers the tests to develop separation process for production of clay and colemanite rich concentrates, and aims to serve the clay and colemanite concentrates extracted from the tailing dams to the industrial applications. For this purpose, samples from the tailing dams in Kestelek Boron Plant (Turkey) with an average B2O3 content of 8%~11 % were subjected to the investigations. The separation process of hydrocyclone--to make clear the way to obtain either clean clay or cole-manite--was initially discussed. Therefore, following the gentle scrubbing (to keep the bimodal size distribution between clay and colemanite) of the tailings to disperse the slurry, two alternative multistage hydrocyclone processes; allowing to recycling the overflows or underflows to concentrate clay and colemanite were respectively tested. As a result of the preliminary tests, the multistage hydrocyclone separation in direction to the clean colemanite concentrates (recycling the underflows) gave the better separation efficiencies. So, all the parameters such as apex and vortex finder diameters and feeding pressures were examined with the multistage hydrocyclone process allowing the recycling the underflows. The detailed multistage hydrocyclone separation process of the tailing dam wastes yielded with colemanite concentrates (approx. 12 % of the feed, w/w) with B2O3 content of 35.0 % and the clay concentrates (approx. 42 % of the feed, w/w) with B2O3 content of 2.1 %. Colemanite concentrates were found good enough either to re-feed in to the separation process or to keep upgrading for final product ready to use in Industry whereas the attempts on production of light bricks from clay concentrates has failed. But it is worth to point out that these clay concentrates can be used for agricultural purposes just in the form as it is.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research into computer-assisted mining, which requires investigation of new techniques for development and application of computer-based technologies. Today's technology can require significant effort in software development, as has become evident in the early stages of this Bureau research. Technologies for software automation, such as computer-aided software engineering (CASE), are available. This report explores CASE, its general features, and its importance in software development. Information is presented to assist in selection and application of the variety of CASE tools and methods for automating various stages of software development. When evaluating CASE for use, it is important to examine tools that support an organization's existing methods of software development. Support for existing hardware platforms must also be examined. Merely selecting a "good" CASE tool does not insure success. Thorough evaluation of implementing CASE is also critical. Subjects to evaluate for CASE implementation include organization culture, support from management and end users, training resources, and pilot projects. Organizations that benefit the most from CASE evaluate CASE features with respect to their needs and they properly implement CASE.
