While the production of crude oil and condensate in South Arkansas increased only 1.7 per cent over the 1940 figure, complete utilization of gas produced with the oil and condensate, and heretofore wasted, was beginning to be evidenced. There were 26,229,264 bbl. of oil and condensate produced in South Arkansas during 1941, as against 25,790,380 bbl. for the year 1940. (Fig. I.) Since 1936, deep producing sands have been discovered in 18 fields and during that period only 40 per cent of the total state production has come from Upper Cretaceous formations while 60 per cent came from the Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic formations. The gas produced with crude oil and condensate from the latter formation contains large quantities of hydrogen sulphide, the maximum being 6900 grains per 100 cu. ft. in the Patton pool of Lafayette County. Gas Utilization During the latter part of 1940 and the early part of 1941, pilot plants were placed in operation to determine whether the hydrogen sulphide and deleterious material in South Arkansas gases could be removed economically. The Federal Government desired to build a large aluminum plant in the Ouachita Valley and was seeking cheap fuel for the generation of electricity. The fact that the gases were produced with appreciable quantities of crude oil and condensate made it available at a very low price, since the state's conservation law prohibits the flaring of any gas. As a result of these experiments the first large-scale unit for the processing of gases containing hydrogen sulphide was placed in operation on Sept. I, 1941. The plant is in the Magnolia oil field, Columbia County. It processes residue gas from the Shell Oil Company's gasoline plant in that field and also raw gas from the Village field, 6 miles east of the Magnolia field. The gas entering the desulphuri-zation unit is laden with approximately 1400 grains of hydrogen sulphide per 100 cu. ft. and is stripped to a content of 4 grains per 100 cu. ft. The capacity of the plant is 15 million cu. ft. of gas treated daily under a pressure of 160 lb. per sq. in. The cost of treatment, exclusive of depreciation, is appreciably less than I per 1000 cubic feet. Two other plants of much greater capacity have been announced and priorities have been granted, which should bring the total amount of gas treated to 150 million cu. ft. daily. The gas to be treated will have a maximum hydrogen sulphide content of 4500 grains per 100 cu. ft. and will be processed under a pressure of 600 lb. per sq. in. These developments are something entirely new in field practice for the industry. The fact that this heretofore wasted gas is available at very low cost has led to the location of some eight war industries within the state, in addition to the alu-minum plant. OVER the past two decades, the Cr-Ni stainless steels, popularly termed 18-8 steels, have been used in ever increasing amounts in the aircraft, automotive, chemical, transportation, and building industries.' The contribution of nickel to these steels is associated with its strong austenite forming tendencies which assure good hot and cold forming characteristics, and with its beneficial influence upon corrosion resistance, especially in oxidizing acids. The adjustment of the chromium and nickel contents has been used advantageously in controlling the rollability and the response of the mechanical properties of these steels to cold reduction. With the advent of the jet age and the government stockpiling of nickel, considerable emphasis has been placed upon the development of satisfactory low nickel or nickel-free substitute austenitic stainless steels, especially for nonmilitary applications.2 Fer-ritic 17 pct Cr (AISI Type 430) stainless steel has been effectively substituted for the austenitic grades in applications with mildly corrosive exposure. However, the limited formability and ferromagnetic behavior of this grade do not permit its satisfactory use for many applications. To achieve better formability in a nenmagnetic steel and conserve nickel, a number of low nickel substitute austenitic grades of stainless steel have been developed in recent years. In most of these steels, manganese and nitrogen have been substituted for a portion of the nickel content, for example, 17 pct Cr-4 pct Ni-6 pct Mn (AISI Type 201), 18 pct Cr-5 pct Ni-8 pct Mn (AISI Type 202), and 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn, all of which contain approximately 0.15 pct N.1 The precipitation of ferrite when large ingots of these Cr-Ni-Mn-N steels are heated to temperatures high enough for conversion to slabs on conventional universal slabbing mills has seriously affected the hot workability of these steels. This has been especially true in the case of the 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn (sometimes referred to as 15 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-15 pct Mn) composition." Because it is possible that little, if any, nickel will be available for nonmilitary stainless steel applications in the event of a national emergency, a need has existed for a nickel-free austenitic stainless steel containing hot and cold forming characteristics similar to 18-8 steels and corrosion resistance at least comparable to the 17 pct Cr ferritic steel. The aforementioned deleterious effect of ferrite upon the hot working characteristics of the 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn, steel indicates the importance of establishing the austenite-austenite plus ferrite phase boundaries as the first step in the development of nickel-free or low nickel substitute steels. This paper presents the data collected in an elevated temperature constitutional study of the Cr-Ni-Mn-N system at the South Works of the United States Steel Corp. Experimental Procedure The 300 compositions used in the investigation were melted in a 26 Ib induction furnace and cast in 3 14 in. diam by 18 in tall hot-tcpped ingot mo1ds.

Newcrest’s Cadia concentrator operated from 1998 to 2012 with a traditional SABC grinding circuit treating Cadia open pit ore. The Cadia comminution circuit was well characterised through surveys and data that are available in the public domain, and became a benchmark standard for the industry and practitioners modelling large SAG mill based circuits. In 2012, the HPGR-based crushing circuit was introduced in front of the SAG mill to increase throughput when treating the Cadia East ore that was derived from an underground block cave. This ore was expected to be more competent and have a coarser run-of-mine size distribution.Numerous previous papers have described the design and commissioning of the Cadia HPGR-based circuit.This paper describes the improvement in comminution energy consumption resulting from the introduction of the HPGR, including identifying the impact of process complexity and an increase in ancillary energy consumption for conveyors, screening, and crushing.CITATION:Lane, G S, Seppelt, J and Wang, E, 2018. [During the past two and a half sears the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the different coal operators, have been making an extensive studs of coal preparation in the State of Alabama. Considerable time has been devoted to the studs of the washing characteristics of the Mars Lee bed and the various methods used In preparing from it a low-ash coal suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. One of the phases of this problem is the utilization of middlings products from the washing plants. This paper gives the results of treating jig middlings on a coal-washing table at the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Tuscaloosa, Ala. The sample used was secured from the Sayreton washery of the Republic Steel Corporation, Sayreton, Ala. WASHERY PRACTICE The Mary Lee bed is very bony, and operators find it difficult to produce from this bed a washed coal much under 10 per cent ash. Experience has shown that in the preparation of a coking coal from the Mary Lee bed it is best to use a process which permits the recovery of a middlings product. Middlings are desirable because separation according to specific gravity is never perfect, and a middlings product makes possible a low ash in the primary warned coal without excessive losses of combustible in the refuse. The general washery practice on the Mary Lee bed is to crush the run-of-mine coal through some maximum screen size and wash it upon some one type of jig without re-treatment of any of the products made. The maximum size treated varies from 3 inch to J inch. The middlings product from multiple-cell jigs is usually termed "boiler fuel" and when possible is utilized as such. At present the production of boiler fuel is often in excess of power requirements, and the surplus, due to its high ash content, becomes waste.]

"As explosives become more widely used in urban and other congested areas, governmental regulations pertaining to their use are becoming more pervasive and stringent. This is forcing the blasting industry to review its entire spectrum of operations. Greater attention is now being paid not only to the design and layout of blasts, but also to the monitoring and recording of their after-effects for both legal and business reasons.Current PracticesThe major users of explosives in urban areas are quarry operators and construction companies. A characteristic of both of these industries, at least in recent years, is a relatively low margin of profit. This, coupled with the fact that their use of explosives is relatively intermittent, prevents them from having the kind of professional consulting services that blasting operations really warrant in today's regulatory environment. When such services are obtained, they tend to be directed more at the design and execution of the blast than at the recordkeeping function. The records that are kept tend to be more in the form of a summary of the consultant's design data as opposed to the kind of after-effect detail that is necessary.The more experienced consultants and operators now realize that at least as much attention must be paid to the record-keeping as to the design work. Regulatory bodies at all levels of government are insisting on the availability of such records.Unfortunately, the instrumentation in use today for taking such measurements does not lend itself to the practice of intermittent consulting. Current monitoring and recording instruments are based on so-called analog technology of the type that has traditionally been applied to the monitoring of earthquakes. They require set-up and calibration procedures which must be repeated each time the instrument is moved, or the blasting parameters are changed, as well as complex total analysis of the recorded data. This can lend to confusion and a dilution of responsibility for anything other than the design work and possibly some summary reporting."

The number of natural-gasoline plants has shown a consistent decline in recent years, but the total capacity has increased steadily. The number of completed plants, as determined by a survey as of January 1, 1932, amounted to 959. Previous surveys of January 1, 1928 and 1930 showed 1,155 and 1,035 plants, respectively. Of the total plants on January 1, 1932, 859 were operating and 100 were shut down, compared with 999 operating and 36 shut down on January 1, 1930. The material gain in the number of inoperative plants in the last two years was probably due to the severe decline in prices of 1931. The low prices of 1931, which were approximately 40 per cent below 1930, made it virtually impossible for the majority of the independent plants, or plants not owned by a large integrated company, to operate at a profit. Accordingly, the majority of the plants removed from the list in 1930 and 1931 were owned by companies which were engaged solely in the manufacture of natural gasoline. The total daily capacity of the plants on January 1, 1932, amounted to 11,387,000 gallons, an increase of 871,000 gallons, or 8 per cent, in the two years 1930 and 1931. That the total capacity of the plants has increased while the number of plants has declined is due to the fact that nearly all the plants constructed in the last five years have been large plants. During 1931 the average total daily capacity of the operating plants was approximately 10,600,000 gallons, while the average daily production amounted to 4,944,000 gallons. This indicates that the plants operated during 1931 at 47 per cent of their capacity, compared with 58 per cent in 1930 and 61 per cent in 1929. Although more plants have been dismantled in Oklahoma in recent years than in any other State, it continues to rank first in number of plants. From the beginning to the end, the attendance and enthusiasm of the 119th meeting, which was held in New York, Feb. 17 to 20 surpassed all expectations. Besides the ten technical sessions, one of which was in conjunction with the American Institute of Electrical Engineering and one a session of the National Research Council, there were two memorial meetings, one for Dr. Raymond and one for the members who died in service; two joint sessions with the Canadian Mining Institute; and a meeting devoted to pictures of copper mining, milling, and smelting. Of the 732 persons registered, 119 registered in the Institute of Metals Division. Monday's sessions were devoted to the problems of industrial organization, the Institute of Metals Division, and to petroleum and gas. Among the special features of these sessions were the topical discussions on housing and. Americanization. Americanization, too, was the topic for discussion by the Woman's Auxiliary Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, nearly 100-members of the Canadian Mining Institute were present to discuss the possibility of bringing about uniform mining laws for the United States, Canada, and Mexico, to obviate the maintaining separate legal departments and managerial forces for the several countries; and to avoid the confusion which, it is said, has led to a duplication of effort and has sometimes created a barrier to international cooperation in mining. O aço 10B06 é utilizado na produção de fio máquina para trefilação. Por ser produzido em aciaria elétrica, o teor de nitrogênio desse aço é elevado, o que pode causar envelhecimento por deformação, resultando em aumento de resistência e queda de ductilidade. Reduzir o teor de nitrogênio livre é uma forma de minimizar esse efeito, o que é feito pela adição de boro. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo realizar uma caracterização mecânica e microestrutural de materiais com teores de boro variando de 55 a 112ppm’s. Nas propriedades mecânicas obtidas no fio máquina, foi observada uma redução do limite de resistência com o aumento do teor de boro, evidenciando o seu efeito em minimizar o envelhecimento. Na análise metalográfica, as microestruturas apresentaram-se similares para todos os testes. Nas imagens do reagente Le Pera foram identificadas três fases, austenita retida e/ou martensita, ferrita e perlita. A presença de martensita não era esperada nesse aço. O que pode ter potencializado a sua formação é a presença de boro livre, que pode causar aumento da temperabilidade. Nos próximos passos desse trabalho serão feitas outras análises para confirmar esse resultado, como microdureza, MEV-EDS e detalhamento do processo produtivo do fio máquina.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Carter Mining Co., conducted vibration tests of four off-road vehicle seats. The purpose of the tests was to determine which seat provided the best vibration attenuation under laboratory conditions. Laboratory tests were constructed to simulate the mining vibration environment within the limitations of the test equipment. The acceleration test levels and corresponding response of the seats were low compared to ISO 2631's fatigue-decreased-proficiency time limits. Two of the seats employed mechanical suspensions and two seats employed air suspensions. The seats were tested using a 22,241-N (5,000-lbf) electrodynamic shaker. Mechanical suspension seats were tested with various preload-to-mass ratios (PMR's) and cushion densities. Air suspension seats were tested with various air pressure levels and seat cushion densities. Air suspension seats provided good vibration attenuation if pressurized greater than 552 kPa (80 psi). Mechanical suspension seats' attenuation performance decreased if the PMR exceeded 9.8. Seat cushions of lower density provided less vibration damping.

"The use of flotation columns has remained a contentious issue among mill operators. There are those who consider them an essential part of any mineral processing operation, while others consider them a necessary evil, which should only be installed if there is no alternative. Lastly, there are those who believe they should not be installed, no matter how great the perceived benefit.This paper provides an analysis of over 4000 installed flotation columns, contained in the Amec Foster Wheeler flotation database. Changing trends in column flotation use by type, commodity and geographical region are discussed. The effect of changing commodity prices and the China ‘phenomenon’ are reviewed. Special reference is made to the changing face of column flotation in Australia.Of note is the fact that after falling to a 20 year low in installed flotation column capacity in 2014, flotation columns during 2015 went through a resurgence in popularity. This resurgence was in direct contradiction to depressed metal prices and was driven by brownfield optimisations to reduce off-site costs, particularly in base metals. "In the iron ore industry, fine particles recovery is an important concern in terms of process performance and production costs. Continuous efforts are thus devoted to increase the efficiency in handling these fines.The Reflux Classifier (RC) is a relatively new technology that is mainly used in the coal and industrial minerals industries. The operating principle of this system is based on three mechanisms: hindered settling, autogenous dense medium and lamella settling. A preliminary evaluation of the Reflux Classifier technology for the beneficiation of iron ore fines was formerly done at the pilot scale using a RCTM300 unit. The good results obtained, using iron ore fines from screened spiral stream, made this technology very attractive for the iron industry. However, the high capacity of the RCTM300 unit (1–3 t/h), makes it unsuitable for R&D purposes. Thus, a smaller unit, the RCTM100, was assessed to validate the performances obtained with the RCTM300.This paper summarizes the performances obtained with the RCTM100. The challenges of the scale-down related to the adaptability of this technology to the iron ore industry are also presented. The results are compared to the RCTM300 performances, as well as benchmarked against sink-float tests. The metallurgical results on feed and products issued after the test work with the RCTM100 unit are supported by mineralogical characterization using a Mineral Liberation Analyzer.INTRODUCTIONFine particles recovery by physical separation means is a historical concern (Holland-Batt, 1992; Peukert and Wadenpohl, 2001; Srivastavaa et al., 2001; Majumder et al., 2003). Attempts to improve fine particle recovery at the laboratory, pilot and industrial scales adopting different strategies with traditional equipment or assessing new promising devices such as the MGS (multi-gravity separator), the Kelsey jig, the Yang jig, etc. (Kim, 2002; Goudreau, 2008; Kerr, 2012) have yielded variable success."

Methane gas is an ever-present problem facing the underground coal mining industry. Mine operators are mandated by law to maintain safe concentrations of methane gas within the mine environment. Ventilation is used by all mine operators to reduce gas concentrations. When gas emissions are such that ventilation alone cannot control the gas, methane drainage methods must be applied. In the 1970's, there was a concern that unprecedented gas emissions would be experienced as mine operators began new developments in the deep and gassy Blue Creek and Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbeds. Such concern was well founded as significant gas volumes are being emitted as these mining operations mature. In 1971, the O.S. Bureau of Mines began to tabulate and track the change in mine emissions. These data were extracted from the underground coal mine quarterly air quality-quantity inspections performed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. At that time, approximately 6,560 Mm Id (231.7 MMcfd) of gas were emitted from 430 underground coal mines. It was determined however, that the mines emitting less than 2,832 m Id (100 Mcfd) contributed only 2.1 percent of the total daily gas flow. In 1988, underground coal mines emitted 8350 Mm Id (294.9 MMcfd) from 487 mines. This report evaluates the changing nature of U.S. mine gas emissions over the last 18 years.

This paper presents the research on comprehensive recovery of copper, gold, silver and iron from tailings from high-intensity magnetic separation in Tonglushan Mine. By comparison of experimental results of three flowsheets?regrinding of tailings-conventional sulphidizing flotation, water heating enhanced sulphidizing flotation and acid leaching-sulphidizing precipitation flotation, it is concluded that regrinding of tailings-conventional sulphidizing flotation flowsheet has the best economical and technical performance and practicability. Regrinding and using the mixture of sodium hydroxamate and sodium xanthate are two of the notable technical characteristics of this best flowsheet. The system for comprehensive recovery of tailings has been put into production. It not only can recover the valuable minerals from tailings in Tonglushan Mine, but also can reduce the environmental pollution, resulting great economic and social benefit.

"Vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite ironsand deposits occur along a 480 km stretch of the west coast of New Zealand. In the present study, the leaching behaviour of NZ ironsand was investigated in hydrochloric acid (2–10 M) solution at 50–80°C for 2 h. The resulting leaching liquors exhibited Fe/V ratios in the range 150–180. The distribution of trace element contaminants between solution and solid residue was investigated, and processing conditions have been determined for rapid and efficient dissolution of Fe, Ti and V into the leaching solution. In addition, mineralogical analysis of raw ironsand and leached residues was performed in order to study the leaching mechanism. Samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, qualitative and quantitative X-ray diffraction and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP). Results indicate that the dominant dissolution process follows shrinking particle mechanism. However, ironsand particles containing ex-solution lamellae exhibited a different leaching behaviour compared to homogenous titanomagnetite particles.INTRODUCTION Titanomagnetite ironsand (blacksand) forms Quaternary onshore beach and dune deposits and offshore marine deposits (Figure 1) along 480 km of coastline from Kaipara Harbour south to Wanganui on the west coast of the North Island (Christie, 2016). It attracted the attention of scientists from the earliest times (Galbreath, 1998). The principal minerals in ironsand are titanomagnetite (TTM), ilmenite, quartz and ferromagnesian minerals such as augite, hornblende, diopside, and olivine with smaller amounts of rutile and apatite (Mauk, 2016).Several large ironsand deposits have been discovered and exploited since the late 1960’s. The Waikato North Head and Taharoa mines are currently operating and they have a 2015 measured resource of 400 million tonnes in total and provide over 2 million tonnes of concentrate per year by simple cost effective magnetic separation process (Christie, 2016; Christie & Brathwaite, 1997). The concentrate contains not only 7–8% TiO2 and 56–60% SFe, but also 0.3–0.6% V2O5, is both a valuable titanium mineral and a source of vanadium. All the production is used for steelmaking industries. The other potential for utilizing more of this resource without requirement of integration into an iron and steel producing plant is to develop a hydrometallurgical route with advantages of higher efficiency along with lower emissions. Currently, there is no existing commercial process capable of extracting all three of these elements as industrial-grade commodity products. Acid leaching of TTM concentrate with higher degrees of recovery and selectivity is a key step in any possible hydrometallurgical route."

This resume of the work of the Petroleum and Natural - Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines for the fiscal years 1940 and 1941 is the second of a series. of progress reports . It brings forward from the 1939 annual report information on the course of activities of the division in carrying out its objectives of increased conservation and better utilization of petroleum, natural gas, and related resources through a coordinated program of research and fact - finding . It discusses, also, special assignments. executed for other Government agencies, which in recent years have constituted a considerable part of the division's work ." . In the present national emergency, in which petroleum is so essential , many of the Bureau's research activities bear directly on the availability, conservation, and use of petroleum for national defense . Accordingly, during the past year attention has been focused for the most part.on.problems associated with the needs of national defense . Several long-time researches , which in themselves are potential sources of desirable knowledge , were judged to be of secondary importance under present conditions and accordingly were suspended . Studies also were oriented in line with rapidly changing conditions to meet the demand for accurate findings on short notice . The Petroleum and Natural - Gas Division has experiment stations at Bartlesville , Okla . , and Laramie, Wyo . , a field office at Dallas , Tex . , and a field office and laboratory at San Francisco , Calif . It also operates the Government helium plant near Amarillo , Tex. In addition to the helium operations , some of the petroleum and natural - gas research activities are conducted at the Amarillo plant .

"The Banora Point Upgrade Project is a 2.5km long six-lane divided freeway in northern New South Wales, Australia. The geology at the project area comprises a volcanic succession of variably weathered basalt flows and agglomerate deposits that reach 48m in thickness and overlie Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. A site specific rock classification system was developed that characterised all the rock units based on the engineering properties governing the rock mass behaviour i.e. intact rock strength and defect characteristics (spacing, aperture, infilling, wall roughness and weathering) irrespective of the geological origin. This approach simplified the design and the on-site verification processes. Based on this classification system, rigorous quantitative statistical assessments of the available geological information including various laboratory and field testing were performed to derive the geotechnical design parameters for various rock classes. These parameters were used to complete geotechnical designs of retaining wall systems. INTRODUCTIONThe Banora Point Upgrade Project is a 2.5km long six-lane divided freeway in northern New South Wales, Australia. The key features include two interchanges, a 300m long viaduct, a large cutting through Sexton Hill with an associated 100m wide Land Bridge and retaining walls reaching 490m long and up to 22m high. This paper focuses on the derivation of representative geotechnical parameters for geotechnical design of the retaining structures supporting Sexton Hill Cutting including bored pile retaining walls and soil nail walls. The geology at the project area comprises a volcanic succession of variably weathered basalt flows and agglomerate deposits that reach 48m in thickness and overlie Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. Due to the complex geological nature of the site, an understanding of the regional and local geology, the typical behaviour of individual geological units and the implication of onsite variations from design intention are the ultimate challenges to the geotechnical engineer in order to select representative geotechnical parameters for design."

Este trabalho apresenta a análise e os resultados de ensaios físico-químicos e metalográfico, na recuperação dimensional, utilizando Procedimento de Soldagem com Arame Tubular (FCAW) em materiais de base em Ferro Fundido Nodular do tipo ASTM A 536 classe 60-40-18, aplicados em Mancais de Encosto de LTQ e LTF Siderúrgico. Para qualificação e aprovação do processo, foram realizados testes em amostras soldadas simulando condições de trabalho os quais são aqui apresentados Através deste trabalho, concluiu-se a recuperação de seis Mancais de Encosto Siderúrgicos com Peso unitário médio de 8 Ton.

As empresas de mineração têm desafios logísticos em sua operação no dia a dia, visto o crescente volume de minério movimentado nas Usinas e Portos e pressão crescente por resultados operacionais que se traduzem na busca contínua por níveis superiores de produtividade. A tecnologia de automação dos processos produtivos e de máquinas evoluiu muito na última década, entretanto o processo da logística nos pátios de matéria prima e produtos apresenta baixo nível de automação e é baseado em informações verbais e observações visuais a respeito do nível de estoques e disposição dos materiais nas pilhas e áreas dos pátios de manuseio. Em um processo tão complexo, pequenas decisões da operação no dia a dia, que podem variar de acordo com o operador, supervisor ou turno de operação, podem influenciar a produtividade diretamente, afetando indicadores como horas paradas e deslocamento de máquinas por tonelada expedida, afetando dessa forma custos significativos na operação de uma usina ou porto. Este trabalho tem por objetivo então descrever as técnicas utilizadas para modelar os desafios de logística nos pátios de minério, descrevendo sistemas de otimização utilizados com apresentação de resultados em projetos como o de Carajás, planta da VALE que é atualmente a maior mina de minério de ferro do mundo, abordando a redução de deslocamento de máquinas, diminuição da exposição ao risco de colisão e redução de paradas.
