Thiosulfate is a green gold leaching agent that shows great potential to replace the highly toxic cyanide. Ammonia is traditionally used as the copper ligand in thiosulfate solutions to reduce the reactivity of copper ions towards thiosulfate, but it is a toxic reagent. As a result, efforts to replace ammonia with another complexing agent have received increasing attention. In this study, a novel alternative to ammonia is proposed to explore the potential use of the copper-malic acid-thiosulfate system. Experimental parameters include temperature, initial pH, copper, malic acid, and thiosulfate concentration. The feasibility of the copper-malic acid-thiosulfate system was discussed using Eh–pH and species distribution diagrams. Themodynamics analysis indicates that the mechanism of gold leaching in copper-malic acid-thiosulfate solution is mainly catalyzed by the Cu2( Mal)2H-2 2−/Cu(S2O3)3 5− redox couple. The capability of gold leaching in this system for processing the refractory gold concentrate is comparable to that of cyanidation and the traditional copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leaching processes. Thiosulfate consumption is greatly reduced in the presence of malate due to its strong chelating effect on the copper ions. Moreover, the copper-malic acid-thiosulfate system demonstrates a significant enhancement in leaching kinetics, making it a viable option for processing refractory gold concentrates.

This paper presents the results of research work conducted to assess if aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) can be used to treat roaster calcine leach residues such that recovery of gold in this material can be achieved with subsequent application of the thiocyanate (SCN-) leaching system. The project is mainly aimed at assessing an alternative use for sulfur dioxide gas generated during flotation concentrate roasting. The calcine leach residue sample used in the study contained 2.56 g/t gold. The reason for this high level of residual gold is thought to be due to gold surface passivation by thin iron oxide films, presence of gold in solid solution with refractory iron oxides and encapsulation of gold in the structure of these iron oxides.The study was conducted in three stages. The first stage was the characterisation of a sample from a roaster calcine leach residue. The second stage in the project was a set of leaching tests to assess the feasibility of using aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide to reductively dissolve refractory iron oxide mineral phases contained in the calcine. The final objective was to assess the efficiency of thiocyanate, a gold complexing ligand stable under acidic and oxidative conditions, to extract gold liberated during sulfur dioxide leaching.The study showed that the reductive sulfur dioxide treatment of the calcine leach residues followed by oxidative thiocyanate leaching to extract gold was not a particularly efficient process as only around 20 per cent gold could be extracted. Leaching the calcine residues by any of these systems separately also extracted the same amount of gold (12 - 14 per cent) implying that irrespective of the solution potential, the acidity helps dissolution of gold encapsulating minerals, mostly hematite, but at a very slow rate. The findings on the topic in the literature and during this study show the requirement for further technical investigations and economical analyses on two cases. The first case is to roast gold concentrates to produce magnetite rather than hematite followed by sulfur dioxide and thiocyanate leaching of magnetite containing calcines. The second case is to apply a magnetic concentration process to conventional roast-cyanidation calcine residues to produce a gold-rich magnetite concentrate that can be further treated with sulfur dioxide followed by thiocyanate leaching.For both cases, the best evaluation of the sulfur dioxide leach system in extracting residual gold from calcine leach residues will require a detailed economic analysis to find out the balance between the value of the gold recovered and the loss of revenue from acid production. There are a number of roasters that do not produce acid. Adições de cálcio são usadas para a modificação de inclusões não-metálicas em aços com demanda de propriedades isotrópicas, boa lingotabilidade e limpeza interna. Entretanto, o cálcio tem elevada pressão de vapor, baixa solubilidade no aço líquido e elevado custo. Embora a maneira mais efetiva, atualmente, de adicionar cálcio seja através da injeção de arames de ligas CaSi ou CaFe, o momento da adição, na rota de elaboração na metalurgia secundária tem importância no rendimento e eficiência do cálcio. Neste trabalho, são discutidas e comparadas três rotas de processamento de aços desoxidados ao alumínio na metalurgia secundária (forno panela (FP) e/ou vácuo (RH): FP-injeção de Ca-Lingotamento, FP-injeção de Ca-RH-Lingotamento, FP-RH-injeção de Ca-Lingotamento). Cada rota apresenta vantagens e limitações de processo. Foram avaliadas corridas processadas pelas três rotas visando identificar o efeito da rota sobre o rendimento do cálcio e sobre a limpeza interna do produto. As comparações foram realizadas através de cálculos por termodinâmica computacional, empregando a análise química e a temperatura de lingotamento. As vantagens e desvantagens observadas para cada rota são discutidas e comentadas.

Safe electrical operation of shuttle cars depends upon maintaining the trailing cable's conductor temperature below 90° C. However, trailing cables are wound on and off reels, which changes the heat transfer characteristics of the cable-reel system. Derating factors for trailing cables are an attempt to adjust for this changing heat transfer mechanism in a practical way. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine acceptable derating factors for reeled mine trailing cables, using four cable-reel combinations, representative of industry usage. Cables were continuously and intermittently loaded at different duty cycles with direct currents of different magnitudes. Relationships between the average temperature rise and current load were established for each layer of each cable. Two models were constructed; one used empirical data from the continuous and intermittent load tests, and the other was based on thermodynamic theory. Results obtained from the theoretical model were compared with those from the empirical model for the rated temperature rise of the cable. Both models can be used to simulate a variety of test conditions including those that normally cannot be conducted in the laboratory. This information was used to determine acceptable derating factors for each layer of these cable-reel combinations.

The Cable belt Company has been building single flight conveyors for a number of years. The simple design concepts of this type conveyor, introduced over thirty years ago, when distances of one to two miles were considered major advances in technology, remain relatively unchanged. Conveyors that are 6 to 20 miles (9.0 to 32 kilometers) long are being built and are presently in operation through- out the free world. The Cable Belt conveyor is not conventional in its construction. Cable welt differs from conventional troughed idler conveyors in that the driving medium and carrying medium are separated. Motion is provided by two endless steel cables running the length of the conveyor. The cables are driven by a single drive unit incorporating a differential gear which insures identical cable linear speeds and equal tension in both cables at all times. The belting is located and supported by "V" shaped shoeforms moulded to the belt which form a wedging action. The friction between the belting and rope is sufficient to prevent slippage (See figure 01).

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments. RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupation-al Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include(1) reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus,(2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers, (3) diminished ability to monitor the work environment (i.e., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers’ compensation and hearing aids. Although eliminating hazardous noise is the long-term solution to the noise problem, miners will likely need to rely on personal hearing protection in certain situations for quite some time. However, it is well known that noise attenuation provided by hearing protectors as they are worn during everyday use is usually quite different (i.e., worse) than when tested under lab conditions. In addition, workers may refuse to wear their hearing protection for any number of reasons. This project was initiated to evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protectors, with an emphasis on optimizing the balance between effectiveness, comfort, over protection, and communication ability. The recently completed auditory research facility is now under-going the accreditation process conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology under the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program. Experiments are planned to investigate the factors that affect a miner’s ability to hear hazard and warning sounds (e.g., roof working, alarm signals, spoken communications, etc.). A service contract has been initiated to record and digitally store samples of typical warning sounds heard in an underground coal mine. This information will be analyzed in the lab to develop recommendations that can be offered to the mining community regarding correct earplug/earmuff usage to maximize there cognition of hazard and warning sounds while adequately protecting the miners’ hearing.

En la unidad Cerro de Pasco de Empresa Administradora Cerro SAC, existen varias fuentes de aguas ácidas de diversas características, con diferentes rangos de acidez y contenidos metálicos de hierro, zinc y cobre, que parcialmente han pasado de ser un pasivo, en términos económicos y ambientales, a ser una fuente de recursos. El tratamiento convencional que se aplicaba en la planta de neutralización consistía en neutralizar la acidez protónica y precipitar los metales disueltos utilizando lechada de cal y luego separar por sedimentación los sólidos formados para obtener un efluente tratado descargado por vertimiento y disposición de lodos formados en la relavera de la unidad. El cambio de pasivo a recurso para las aguas ácidas pasó por rehabilitar un proceso abandonado, identificando y separando en el interior de la mina subterránea un flujo que por su contenido de cobre ha sido separado en un circuito independiente del existente para las otras aguas ácidas de menores contenidos metálicos. Se desarrolló una secuencia de procesos de precipitación selectiva; inicialmente para recuperar cobre se implementó a escala industrial la cementación con chatarra de hierro. A escala piloto se han concluido tanto las pruebas para separar el hierro por oxidación y precipitación selectiva en medio ácido, como aquellas por las que, a partir de la solución pobre de la precipitación del hierro, se precipita el zinc en dos alternativas: precipitación alcalina como hidróxido de zinc o precipitación en medio ácido por sulfuración. A escala industrial, la recuperación de cobre en la cementación con chatarra de hierro alcanza el 75%, y 85% de contenido de cobre fino. A escala piloto, para el hierro se espera una recuperación sobre 95%, para un producto que alcanza 39% de fierro, mientras que para el zinc, la recuperación esperada es de 93% y un contenido de 35% de Zn en el precipitado de sulfuro.

"In 2015 operations under the ownership and/or management of all Newmont Mining Corporation subsidiaries (Newmont) produced 5.7 Moz of gold and 619 Mlb of copper from mining operations in five countries, with well over 100 Mt of ore processed by various grinding technologies. Processing methods used in the extraction of metals include flotation, oxidation, conventional cyanidation and heap leaching. The grinding technologies applied in milling operations feeding metal recovery processes include conventional wet grinding semi-autogenous grinding (SAG), rod and ball, dry grinding, concentrate regrinding and ultra-fine grinding, and ball milling of high pressure grinding roll product. SAG/ball (SAB) configurations represent the dominant comminution flow sheet within the company and the circuit configurations employed include SAB, SABC-A, SABC-B and single-stage (SS) SAG milling, with SAG mill feed ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) ore through to secondary crusher product. The collective experiences earned from designing, operating and debottlenecking these various comminution circuits provide many lessons that can be applied to the design and optimisation of future operations. This paper provides an overview of Newmont’s diverse comminution circuits, discusses recent performance and offers some insight into optimisation and design considerations based on recent experience in both endeavours.Citation:Giblett, A and Hart, S, 2016. Sulfide tailings from past and present mining activities are important hosts of critical elements and precious metals. This review paper presented a literature survey on the recovery practices of some critical minerals containing Te from sulfide tailings with a special focus on the physical beneficiation and hydrometallurgical separation methods. Finally, a conceptual framework and possible processing flowsheets were proposed. The findings of this review will be useful for the researchers in the field of geochemistry, mineral processing, and metallurgy to evaluate the separation processes for reprocessing of mine tailings for the recovery of critical minerals.

Before the various States began to enact workman's compensation laws accidents were considered inherent in many industries, and little or no effort was made to prevent or reduce them. The hazard was accepted by the employee with the job, and the avoidance of accidents by mental alertness or physical agility was largely his responsibility. After the employee had given evidence of enough skill inn performing his allotted task efficiently the responsibility of the employer apparently ceased with respect to the personal safety of the employee. However, following the enactment of workmen's compensation laws, at least two facts that had not before been fully appreciated soon became apparent: (1) The majority of accidents can be prevented if the management firmly determines to prevent them; (2) frog a monetary point of view alone accidents are decidedly expensive, both to employer and to employee. It is now evident that savings effected by conscientious safety effort add substantially to net profits of operation.

Quando processos de engenharia de superfícies multifuncionais que combinam fases de propósito orientadas são aplicados a substratos moles, uma combinação de alta resistência ao desgaste, suporte de alta carga e baixos coeficientes de atrito podem ser obtidos. Neste estudo, os efeitos de diferentes camadas nitretadas no comportamento tribológico de revestimento Diamond-Like-Carbon (DLC) depositado sobre aço SAE 1040 são investigados. A nitretação foi conduzida sob diferentes temperaturas e misturas de gases para criar três camadas de nitretos distintas: duas camadas de compostos com predominância de fases e e ?’ e uma camada de difusão. Todas as superfícies foram então revestidas com DLC, depositado via Plasma-Enhanced-Chemical-Vapour-Deposition (PACVD). As fases de nitreto foram analisadas utilizando difração de raios-X e a topografia da superfície foi analisada por interferometria de luz branca e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. O comportamento tribológico foi investigado utilizando esfera e plano com movimento alternado com carregamento incremental até a falha do filme DLC. Os testes tribológicos indicaram que o melhor desempenho foi alcançado por uma específica combinação de dureza, rugosidade superficial e tipo de nitreto. A melhor capacidade de mancalização entre o revestimento DLC e o substrato mole foi alcançada quando a camada de nitretos constitui-se apenas de uma camada de difusão.

The facts are generally accepted that an atmosphere containing large quantities of any dust is objectionable to breathe and that some dusts are more dangerous than others. Therefore, knowledge of the com-position of dusts is important in evaluating the hazard entailed on exposure. At present, free silica, of which quartz is the most abundant form, is considered one of the most significant dusts, from the standpoint of pneumoconiosis, and one State5/ has established permissible limits of air dustiness on the basis of the free-silica content of rock. The amount 06 free silica in materials used for rock dusting also has been limited.6/ Determination of free silica or quartz, therefore, is important.

THE use of color adds a new beauty, power, and versatility to metallography. This has been amply demonstrated in a number of public exhibits and on the walls of corporate, government, and university metallographic laboratories around the world. Indeed, in a number of cases, the color not only is of esthetic value but is scientifically essential to the competent examination of particular samples and systems. Optical strain analysis,' determination of true grain size in U-A1 alloys: phase identification in Nb-base alloys,3 analysis of transformation rates in heat-treated Nb-Zr alloys,4 measurement of solidification segregation in cast Nb-Zr alloys,' study of the intermediate phases in Nb/Sn diffusion couples,6 investigation of the oxidation kinetics at various surface orientations in single crystals,7'8 and a number of other research efforts9'10 would have been vastly more difficult without the extra clarity and distinction introduced by color—either the colors resulting from particular polarized light techniques or the interference colors obtained by oxidation. It is unfortunate that the beauty of colored micro-structures cannot be shared more widely, but the economics of publishing a technical magazine apparently prohibits color plates except under extraordinary circumstances. It is doubly unfortunate that no convenient, general method exists for communicating the information available in colored microstructures to the scientific community. True, in some instances the color changes observed are dramatic enough that direct black and white photography is adequate. In photoelastic stress analysis, several orders of interference fringes may be produced and it is frequently desirable to suppress the color effects (use monochromatic light) to simplify interpretation. On the other hand, relatively minute color variations may be readily detectable by eye, be of considerable assistance in interpreting a structure, and yet be enormously difficult to reduce to an unambiguous black and white print. In order to illustrate a possible compromise or solution to the above problems, we wish to show three black and white photographs of the same region of an Nb/Sn diffusion couple whose interpretation depends heavily upon use of color techniques. These micro-structures were obtained from a section through a rod consisting of commercial-purity niobium tubing filled with 99.995 pct Sn (melt-filled in 10"6 Torr vacuum). The composite rod, measuring 500 mm long, was bent into a hairpin shape and inserted into water-cooled copper grips in a vacuum high-temperature furnace. The rod was outgassed for 2 hr at a furnace temperature of 800°C and was further heated by self-resistance using a 2.2-kva ac power supply. The rod was raised to 1910°C over a 4+-hr period, held for 15 min, slow-cooled to 1500°C over a -hr period, and free-cooled to room temperature (all temperatures were measured with W5Re/W26Re thermocouple). Throughout the heat treatment the ambient pressure was kept below 8 x lo-' Torr. Metallographic preparation of the sample was completely conventional except that it was necessary to extend the grinding steps to remove damage in the brittle NbsSn phase introduced by sectioning. No satisfactory chemical or electrochemical etch has been found for these diffusion couples; of those which have been tried, any that attack the niobium-rich phases at all attack the tin-rich phases disastrously. However, the final polishing steps did produce a slight relief effect and this, coupled with anodizing, yielded excellent clarity in the microstructures for direct observation. The anodizing voltage was chosen to give maximum change in color per unit change in composition. In this case, indeed normally, this maximum sensitivity occurred in the blue-to-red color range. This report presents the results of a task to complete a final design of a remote controlled hi-roof bolting machine for high roof areas in coal mines. The project was begun by visiting several coal mines to become familiar with roof fall areas. Several machine concepts were generated and presented to the design committee for criticism. A preliminary design was completed, as covered by this report. A Final Design and Final Report will be issued incorporating the committee comments at the Preliminary Design review and comments received concerning this Preliminary Design Report.

Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. This additional storage capacity causes the static water level to drop and for well-bore permeability to improve. Static water level recovers if sufficient recharge is available and well performance is improved.

A microestrutura porosa do coque pode ser definida como a relação espacial entre a matriz carbonosa e seus poros. A formação da microestrutura ocorre durante o processo de carbonização dos carvões coqueificáveis. Portanto, o conhecimento das propriedades que governam a formação da microestrutura torna-se atrativa como uma ferramenta na escolha estratégica de carvões na composição de misturas para produção de coque. Neste trabalho coques laboratoriais foram produzidos por carvões com diferentes propriedades, visando a formação de coques com microestrutura com propriedades microestruturais distintas. A caracterização microestrutural foi realizada a partir de uma ferramenta de microscopia ótica associada a análise de imagens. A partir dos parâmetros obtidos na análise, foi estudado a influência das propriedades dos carvões nos parâmetros analisados. Além disso a convergência com outros modelos (MOF e CBI) foi estudada. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que carvões com estágio plástico desenvolvido e elevado teor de matéria volátil geram coques de alta porosidade e com poros de tamanho excessivo. Carvões ricos em componentes inertes apresentam microestrutura de baixa porosidade, composta de poros pequenos, no entanto, com poros de baixa circularidade. Os carvões com as melhores propriedades (critérios dos modelos MOF e CBI) resultaram nos coques com as microestruturas mais regulares, de baixa porosidade, com pequenos poros e com formatos adequado.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to enhance methane control and mine ventilation practices at coal mines, as a method to mitigate hazardous work conditions. NIOSH researchers conducted case studies to investigate the effectiveness of existing systems and improve performance to decrease the potential for unplanned or excessive methane emissions. At one mine, drainage was influenced by hydrofracking inefficiencies where two of the six wells showed good frack development. Methane content was variable, from 300 ft3/t to 600 ft3/t. This paper also summarizes overburden movement during undermining and the estimated quantities of gas transported to the mine using FLAC3D and CFD modeling. The findings from this research effort highlight considerations based on specific mine conditions that may also be applicable to most longwall mines utilizing methane control systems.

O presente trabalho visa caracterizar um compósito polimérico de matriz epóxi reforçado com fibras de carbono HTS40 E13 3k TohoTenax® para avaliar o potencial de reutilização das fibras de carbono. As técnicas de caracterização utilizadas foram a microscopia eletrônica de varredura para análise superficial do compósito antes e depois da degradação térmica, análise por Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy para verificar os elementos químicos presentes no produto final e a termogravimetria para determinar a influência da temperatura e do tempo de tratamento na degradação da matriz polimérica. O presente estudo mostra que a matriz polimérica do compósito utilizado inicia o processo de degradação a 250°C e que a 500°C é possível obter um material de reforço intacto e livre da matriz polimérica com apenas traços residuais da resina e o tempo de tratamento térmico em um patamar isotérmico não influencia a taxa de degradação.

Recent advancements in understanding the detonation process are noteworthy, but they are still based on somewhat hypothetical situations. The actual variables that are essential parts of normal blasting practice have not yet been taken into account in such treatments. These include the various initiation practices employed to detonate a column of explosive, from single point initiation to multi-point initiation in blast holes, and the effect on detonation characteristics of both detonators and explosives under multi-deck and multi-hole blasting conditions. The in-the-hole velocity of detonation (VOD) of an industrial explosive is dependent on explosive’s charge diameter and blasthole diameter. The relationship between blasthole diameter and VOD provides a fundamental guideline to the rate of energy conversion and energy release within the detonation front on the interaction of explosives with the confining medium.The in-the-hole VOD of explosives was measured at four experimental sites in India for different blasthole diameters, ie 150 mm to 311 mm, but for identical explosive composition being same particle size, density, viscosity and loaded into blastholes with the same degree of confinement. The results of the studies demonstrated that there is definite relationship in in-the-hole VOD of the explosive and the diameter of the blast hole. The study also confirmed that the explosives initiated with concentrated boosters yielded higher VOD in comparison to those explosives that were initiated with multi-point priming. The measured increase in VOD of explosives for increasing diameter of holes was up to 24 per cent. The rate of change in in-the-hole VOD of explosives increases with increasing blasthole diameter. It can be further stated that the in-the-hole VOD of the explosive reaches a fairly constant value after reaching a limiting/threshold diameter of 311 mm.
