Disruption in critical minerals supply chains has resulted in the evaluation of various types of mineral deposits for critical minerals potential. Much of the study on critical minerals focuses on occurrence and characterization, but little research has addressed what concentrations of critical minerals in a mineral deposit are required to make an exploration target into an operating mine. Understanding the cut-off grades of ore deposits being actively mined is one criterion to determine if concentrations in an exploration target are high enough. Cut-off grade is defined as the minimum amount of mineral contained in a ton of ore that is sent to the processing plant. Among many factors, cut-off grade depends upon the size and type of the deposit and mining operation, the processing technique, and market prices. This research does not aim to define cut-offs for determining if a mineral deposit is economic. Rather, it defines estimates of concentrations of critical minerals that could be considered good enough for further exploration. For example, ~2% total rare earth oxide (TREO) is the cut-off grade for Mt. Pass carbonatite, but 500 ppm TREO could be an exploration target for coals.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common problem in different areas with a past history of mining activities, which is characterized by low pH (2-4.5) and significant toxic metals concentration. The main aim of the present work was to perform a process feasibility analysis in order to remove heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Ni, Mn, Cu) from AMD (Acid Mine Drainage) in a relatively cheap and environmentally friendly way, by means of electrowinning and biosorption. A first characterization of an Italian AMD sample was performed evidencing a zinc concentration around 2 g/L, cadmium and nickel content of about 4 mg/L, manganese of 85 mg/L and iron 190 mg/L. Electrowinning tests lead to the following metal removal after three hours treatment: Zn 99%, Ni 99.9%, Cd 99.9%, Cu 99%, Mn 87%, Fe 96%. Moreover, an high grade of purity of the metal deposit has been achieved (Zn>95%), as observed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Considering that metals concentration in the effluent was still above legal limits (in particular for Zn, Mn and Fe), a further biosorption treatment was planned in order to produce an effluent fitting environmental limits. Experimental electrowinning tests and literature multimetal column biosorption data have been used in order to perform a preliminary techno-economic feasibility analysis of the process aimed at metal removal from AMD. A treatment cost of about 6.5 ?/m3 AMD has been estimated, for a plant capacity of 10 m3/h AMD inlet flow rate.

This report describes instrumentation which is part of a system for extinguishing mine fires by pumping material through surface boreholes in order to seal off all underground passageways leading to the fire area. Major instrumentation systems include a closed circuit television probing system and an acoustic seal checking system. The latter consists of a speaker probe, a receiver probe and related signal processing equipment. All probes can be winch-deployed down a 6-inch diameter borehole. The CCTV unit can be rotated 360 degrees in the horizontal plane, and contains sufficient lighting to reliably assay conditions for sealing or rescue within a 200 foot radius. The acoustic seal checker monitors the completion of a seal as it progresses by use of probes lowered through boreholes on either side of the seal.

This paper is concerned with an analysis of a number of failures of large-size, hypervelocity light gas gun chambers and barrels. A brief description of the light gas gun principle and of the various types of guns is first given. The failures and the investigations carried out are then described in detail, with the failures divided into two groups. The first group comprises those failures caused by certain conditions to which the guns may be submitted, and includes, for example, severe local heating of the bore surface causing hardening and cracking of the steel. These conditions were accidental and steps were taken to prevent them. The remaining failures were due to faults in the material or in the heat-treatment, manufacturing or assembling procedures. Specific problems, such as hydrogen embrittlement, and the use of high strength gun barrels above their ductile-brittle transition temperature by preheating prior to firing, are briefly considered. O biodiesel, obtido a partir de um éster e um álcool na presença de um catalisador, é produzido pela reação de transesterificação e tem como coproduto a glicerina. A produção de biodiesel da Petrobras Biocombustível tem, em uma de suas etapas, a lavagem dos produtos para remoção do catalisador básico, metilato de sódio, por meio da reação de neutralização com ácido clorídrico. Devido a essa prática, a glicerina obtida é acidificada e contêm resíduos de cloretos, o que leva à corrosão localizada dos aços utilizados em determinados pontos do processo de produção. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho avaliou a resistência à corrosão do aço austenítico 317L e do aço lean duplex 2304, em meio de glicerina acidificada contendo cloretos. Todas as medidas foram conduzidas a 64ºC, visando simular as condições de operação da empresa. Para o estudo em questão, utilizou-se as técnicas de potencial de circuito aberto (OCP), polarização potenciodinâmica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). As análises mostraram que o aço AISI 317L obteve menor potencial de pite que o SAF 2304, logo foi menos resistente. Por meio do MEV foi possível confirmar a presença dos pites, sendo que as cavidades presentes no aço AISI 317L foram mais numerosas e profundas que as observadas no aço SAF 2304.

Rock breakage using blasting is one of the important operations of the mining industry. The delay timing decides the initiation sequence of holes in the blasts and is a crucial factor to improve the overall blast performance. Blast-induced ground vibration is an undesired yet unavoidable outcome of blasting. Peak particle velocity (PPV) is commonly used to measure the magnitude of blast-induced ground vibration. Channelization and better utilization of explosive energy delay are provided between blast holes using initiating systems. The use of different initiation systems even on the same site results in a very significant difference in the values of PPV generated. Due to scattered delay timings of pyrotechnic detonators, the scaled distance predictor equations obtained become unreliable. The error/scatter in delay timing leads to overlapping of holes and hence increases in maximum charge per delay. In this paper, an analytical approach has been discussed to measure the overlapping of holes during blasting with initiation systems having inherent cap scatter. The analytical approach will be calculating the probable overlapping of holes due to scatter in delay timing and will help blasting engineers to understand the variation in maximum charge per delay due to pyrotechnic based initiating systems. In this study, a total number of 102 blasts were conducted using different initiation systems at two different opencast coal mine and 221 corresponding blast vibrations events were recorded.

The direct smelting of copper concentrates to copper metal in a single furnace offers environmental and energy advantages over conventional two-stage copper smelting processes. However, the direct copper making results in unacceptably high level impurities (As, Sb and Bi) in the anode copper. Experimental studies have shown that it is possible to remove these impurities from molten copper by injection of sulfur-hexafluoride. This paper discusses the experimental findings on the influence of various factors on the rate of removal of impurities, such as the impurity inter-effects, initial oxygen content in the metal and injection rate of SF6.

The Bureau of Mines determined the mechanism(s) involved in observed anomalous changes in mechanical properties of vanadium-base alloys. Tensile properties of electrorefined and commercial-purity vanadium-base alloys containing up to 5 atomic percent molybdenum or titanium were measured between 77° and 673° K. Snoek oxygen and nitrogen peak heights were measured to determine the changes in dissolved interstitial content caused by increasing quantities of solute. In addition, changes in lattice parameter were followed wit: precision X-ray techniques. Softening, observed in alloys containing titanium, is explained by the formation of a second-phase titanium compound with oxygen or nitrogen. However, because of partitioning of titanium between compound formation and solid solution formation, about five times the stoichiometric amount was required for complete reaction. Addition of 1 percent titanium drastically lowered the strengthening due to strain aging, at 673° K, and 2 percent titanium essentially eliminated it. All alloys were ductile at 77° K. Variations in the tensile properties of the molybdenum-containing alloys are explained by variations in the amounts of interstitial impurities present. The molybdenum did not react with these impurities and had no effect on strengthening due to strain aging. Commercial-purity vanadium alloys containing more than 2 percent molybdenum were brittle at 77° K.

THE solidus line above the solid solution field in the lead-antimony system was originally determined by Dean and his associates1 from heating curves. They did not regard this line as having been accurately fixed and in their more recent publications2 the curves drawn do not follow closely the original data. The precise location of the solidus line is of importance in the extrusion of lead-antimony cable sheath, as the temperature of the metal in this process must be less than the lowest temperature at which any part of the alloy in the lead-press charge becomes liquid. It is very desirable, however, to operate at as high a temperature as possible, as the rate of extrusion for a given pressure is approximately doubled for an increase of 10° C. in temperature. The precise location of this line is also important, in the investigation of ternary systems of lead, antimony and a third metal. For these reasons, and because of the differences reported in the literature, data were secured on the lead-antimony solidus line by the classical quenching-test procedure.

Solvent extraction technology using EHEHPA (2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid, 2-ethyhexyl mono ester) is the norm for industrial separations of rare earth elements. This process has some shortcomings, including a large number of stages compared to most SX processes and high acid requirement for stripping of the heavy rare earths. In this work, we examine a number of alternative mixed solvent extraction systems: (i) Mixtures of organophosphonic and phosphinic acids such as EHEHPA/Cyanex 272 or Cyanex 572; (ii) Ionic liquid mixtures of EHEHPA with quaternary ammonium chloride (Aliquat 336); and (iii) Mixtures of carboxylic acids for yttrium/lanthanide separations. We discuss and compare the efficacy of these systems with reference to the Nd/Sm separation, which is of industrial significance. Based on the extraction chemistry and the use of modelling tools to define the counter-current solvent extraction circuit, we present a techno-economic analysis of a separation plant and discuss the impact of various solvent systems on the capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating costs (OPEX).

"The tests described below were conducted by the Bureau of Mines at a lease in Oklahoma on installations designed to decrease evaporation losses of crude oil Pram storage tanks. Use of the lease was granted by the Oklahoma Producing and Refining Corporation of America. Tankage was obtained through the courtesy of the Parkensburg Pig and Reel Co. The purpose of the installations and tests was to demonstrate the value of making crude-oil storage tanks gas-tight, rather than to determine the amount of evaporation in any one type of tank. None of the tanks used were absolutely gas-tight, but one of them was very nearly so. They comprised a tank of the ordinary open type with an 18-inch manhole, a tank with a ""4-inch vent"", a tank with a ""smaller vent"", and a tank which had only ""pin holes"" through which air and vapor could pass freely. On the last two tanks any excess pressure was taken care of by an automatic differential pressure regulator.The results obtained in these tests indicate that tight tankage will soon pay for itself. They will not, however, serve as a basis on which a producer can compute the actual number of days necessary for tight tankage to pay out, because the oil used was exceptionally volatile. It is probable that the average evaporation loss in the Mid-Continent field is at least one-half as great as that shown by these tests, and if this is true, the saving that would be effected by providing tight tankage on the lease will undoubtedly justify the expense. The installation of evaporation-proof tanks on the lease has been delayed by the failure of production managers to realize, first, that their evaporation losses are enormous, and, second, that they can practically eliminate these losses by a simple and inexpensive installation."

The aim of this work is to clarify the role of microstructure heterogeneity in the initiation and growth of cracks in a lost foam cast A319 for low cycle fatigue (LCF) loading condition. Because 2D analysis fail to establish the scenario of damage events, this study is based on 3D in situ analysis using synchrotron X-ray tomography during LCF test performed at 200°C. If X-ray tomography is now an established technique to study damage development in 3D, its application for relatively high temperature cyclic tests has never been done so far. Initial 3D observations of damage show that the cracks that lead to fracture initiate near large pores and propagate into the hard particles 3D network of the eutectic regions.

Part of the work of the Precious Metals Section is to conduct oretesting experiments on ores selected as representative of various mining districts or areas . The projects are authorized by the Metallurgical Division , and only those ores in which gold and silver or gold or silver constitute an essential part of the total values are assigned to the Precious Metals Section . Such ores include those containing the precious metals only as commercially important ingredients , as well as those containing base metals such as copper , lead , and zinc along with the gold and silver . In many instances the "ore " may be a tailing product of a grade good enough to warrant retreatment , or a concentrate for which it is desirable to develop a method of treatment to avoid the expense of shipment to a smelter . It is evident that in general the greater part of this ore - testing work is done according to standard testing procedure , such as cyanidation, amalgamation, gravity - concentration , and flotation , or a combination of these methods . The standard methods of conducting such tests have been outlined in previous reports of ore - testing studies . However , since the inauguration of this oretesting program 6 years ago , the ores submitted under authorization have become increasingly more refractory to simple methods of treatment. Consequently, a considerable number of the projects completed during the fiscal year 1941 have required an unusual amount of work and in some instances have developed into real research problems . PART I SUMMARY CERTAIN relations between the formation of ore deposits and other geological processes are pretty generally accepted, namely: that many ore deposits are closely associated with igneous activity; that ore deposits accompany certain types of intrusive bodies, notably batholiths and stocks, and that they are concentrated near the tops of such bodies; that igneous activity occurs in belts of strong folding and faulting; that folding and faulting are greatest in basins of extensive sedimentation and least in areas of erosion or slight sedimentation; that areas of erosion or slight sedimentation and of heavy sedimentation persist over long periods and exert a major control over structure, igneous activity, and ore deposition; that cycles of erosion, deposition, folding and faulting, igneous activity, and ore deposition, have been repeated through geologic time resulting in rather definite periods in which metal deposits have formed. In short, ore deposition is but one phase of a series of closely related geological events. It is attempted in this chapter to point out the relations of these interreacting geologic processes to the distribution of ore deposits in the western United States. Three great periods of mineralization are recognized; pre-Cambrian, post-Jurassic, and late Cretaceous-Tertiary. In distribution the deposits of the three periods, with certain exceptions, show a concentration about two large positive areas, the Colorado plateau and the Columbia plateau, which suggests a causal relation. The most general age divisions of the rocks of the Cordilleran region of the United States are (1) pre-Cambrian, and (2) Cambrian and later rocks. The pre-Cambrian rocks are exposed mainly through the Rocky Mountain belt from the Canadian boundary southward to Arizona and westward through Arizona to southern California. They have commonly

This report on properties of commercial motor fuels is the twelfth in a series made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report contained data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The -present report, covering the summer of 1941, presents analytical data for 1,857 samples, representing the products of approximately 135 companies. -As in previous surveys, these companies include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted, and these data are published exactly as they were received. Conforming to previous surveys, the data cover three groups of samples -- regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines -- and each group has been aver aged separately. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, are as follows: Regular price, 1,010 samples, 291 items, and 86 brands; premium price, 577 samples, 263 items, and 78 brands; third-grade gasoline, 270 samples 159 items, and 74 brands. The meanings of these terms as used in the surveys are as follows: Sample: The individual supply of gasoline obtained at the filling station and analyzed in the laboratory.
