Underground mining environments bring occupational health and safety issues with some severe dangers such as mine disasters like explosions. During such events, miners might escape using main access openings, or find a safe haven like refuge alternatives (RAs) to wait and be rescued and evacuated to the surface. In this paper, RAs are explained with their early and current applications. A classification as permanent and portable is explained depending on the conditions and their abilities. This classification is followed by the utilization and survivability of RAs with the requirements and recommendations of the main mining countries. Based on the utilization and survivability constraints, basic human requirements, waiting for a rescue team, and the required physical specifications of RAs during the events are analyzed in detail for various countries with their regulations. Among these, the specification, resistance to the explosion, is discussed in particular, and the studies in the literature are examined in terms of structural deformation. The highest deformed zones, the beneficiation of reinforcing steel components such as stiffeners, and the simulation approaches are investigated through this review.

THE iron deposits of central Labrador occur within a relatively small area, herein called the Knob Lake Iron Range, in which a northwest-trending series of low hills and ridges defines the height-of-land at the boundary between provinces of Quebec and Newfound-land. Approximately two-thirds of the deposits are in Quebec and the remainder in Labrador, with several deposits straddling the inter-provincial boundary. These deposits are being exploited in open-pit mines by the Iron Ore Company of Canada centered at Schefferville, Quebec. Since 1954 this company has produced more than 56 million tons of iron ore to become Canada's leading iron ore producer. With indicated reserves of more than 375 million tons of direct-shipping ore and large tonnages of iron formation amenable to beneficiation, this mining district is assured of a long life. Iron oxide (FeO) plays an extremely important part in the manufacture of iron and steel. In the three major processes- blast-furnace, open-hearth, and Bessemer converter-iron oxide is the chemically predominant compound and controls to a large ex- tent the operation of the furnaces and the composition and quality of their respective products. In order to emphasize the importance of iron oxide in each process, they will be considered individually in some detail. THE OPEN-HEARTH FURNACE. Iron oxide is introduced into the open-hearth furnace in four ways : 1. The scrap charged into the open hearth is oxidized by the furnace gases, the amount of oxide formed depending primarily on the amount and type of scrap charged. It has been found' that with large scrap, 1.7 Ib. of FeO is formed per 100 Ib. of scrap charged, whereas with scrap of medium size about 5.3 Ib. of FeO is formed per 100 Ib. of scrap charged, when the period between the charging of the scrap and the addition of hot metal is 3 hours. 2. Abstract-Eclogite is an important source of diamond in the upper mantle, but is more localized than peridotite. Using eclogitic minerals in kimberlite and diamond exploration is also more problematic than using the well-known peridotite-derived indicator minerals Cr-pyrope and magnesiochromite. The problems include color similarities between orange garnets from eclogites, Cr-poor megacrysts, and crustal garnets, chemical similarities with Cr-poor megacryst suite garnets (specifically elevated Na2O contents), and low abundance of eclogite garnet xenocrysts in most known kimberlites. Chemical screens must be used carefully to distinguish between varieties of orange garnets in exploration samples. For example, most orange garnets of crustal origin have >22 wt% FeO, with mantle eclogite garnets having lower values. Na2O-bearing garnets from the Cr-poor megacryst suite can be distinguished from Na2O-bearing garnets from diamondiferous eclogites by the elevated TiO2 contents of the former. The low abundance of eclogite garnet xenocrysts in kimberlites worldwide, however, may dictate that use of eclogite garnets in diamond exploration in most cases be restricted to advanced stages of kimberlite exploration and evaluation of kimberlite diamond potential. Crpyropes, Mg-ilmenites and Cr-rich chromites are more useful than eclogitic garnets in most stages of diamond exploration. If orange garnet xenocrysts are sought in a kimberlite exploration program, those from the Cr-poor megacryst suite will be more useful than eclogite derived garnets, due to the typical great abundance of the former, although they carry no information of the diamond potential of the host kimberlite.

The Concentrator 1 plant at Cadia transitioned from Cadia Hill open pit to the Cadia East block cave ore body in 2013. As a result of this change, major plant upgrades were required to achieve the desired throughput while treating more competent ore. The 40-foot (40’) SAG mill now receives a feed of predominantly high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) product with a minor component of secondary crushed ore at a combined F80 of 17 mm. The significant reduction in feed size to the SAG mill has markedly changed the operating characteristics of the mill, which has been extensively studied since commissioning in 1998.This paper examines the operation of the 40’ SAG mill in its new configuration in the Concentrator 1 circuit. Operational stability is highlighted as a significant factor in delivering mill performance, which has been achieved through several key improvement projects utilising a theory of constraints framework. Five years of successful project implementation has progressively lifted the maximum processing rate of Concentrator 1 from the design estimate of 2455 t/h to above 3000 t/h. The details of a three-phase study (total time period of 12 months) entitled ?Fire Alert Systems for Metal and Non-Metal Mines,? are presented. Phase 1 consists of a state of the art survey on fire detection devices and gas sensing techniques. Phases 2 and 3 include laboratory screening and systems concepts testing on various detectors classified as products of combustion, optical view-field and contact (or thermal) types under incipient and flaming combustion conditions. Recommendations for a mine fire detection system to protect shaft, sealed off or mined out (from spontaneous combustion of sulfide containing ores and cellulosic materials), and fuel storage areas are also included. me principal problem area noted during Phase 1 study is the high expected occurrence of false alarming of products of combustion detectors (POC") subjected to normal mining operations---diesel vehicles and equipment and shot firing or blasting operations. Simultaneous gas sensing of either the ratio of CO/NOx or CO2/NOx with detection of one or more fire signatures (smoke, radiant energy, or heat sensing) is the recommended approach to discriminate against these operations.

N L Industries, Inc., MacIntyre Development produces ilmenite and magnetite concentrates from its own open pit operation at Tahawus in New York's Adirondack Mountain region. The ilmenite concentrate is used within the company for the production of titanium dioxide pigments and the magnetite concentrate is sold to heavy media processors. Current production is from South Extension mine, loading by by six-yard Marion electric shovels into 85 ton Lectra Haul trucks. Bench heights are 44' and are drilled with a Robbins Rotary 9 7/8" diameter hole on 25' spacing for a yearly production of 3.4 million total tons of rock. The ore deposit occurs in veins dipping on the average at 40 degrees to the west. The ore body, which is divided into three zones, outcrops at surface and continues to depths of 800'. Zone 1 is a high grade band of thickness 150-200' with an Fe/Tio2 ratio of 2. Below this band is Zone 2, a low grade band of thickness 50-100' with an Fe/Tio2 ratio of 2 and beneath that seperated by a band of anorthosite is Zone 3, a high grade band of irregular thickness 50-450' with an Fe/Tio2 ratio of 1.6.

This paper considers three aspects of cemented fill practice and research in Mount Isa. Firstly, an account is given of the use of Portland cemented hydraulic fill, considering mainly the role and specifications of the fill used but including brief description of fill preparation and placement. Data resulting from a Portland cemented hydraulic fill sampling, curing and cesting campaign covering about 18 months of operating practice are presented, analysed and discussed. These yield information indicating the mode of operation of a fully-automated fill preparation station, as well as a means of comparing field and laboratory strength results. A technique with potential for use as a fill quality control without actual strength testing is also described. Results of a fill research programme conducted by the author in Mount Isa since early 1968 are presented, involving both Portland cemented hydraulic fill and altei._acive, cheaper, additives for cementing hydraulic Fill.

The reaction of oxygen and solid aluminum produces the well-known surface coating of aluminum oxide, Al2O3. Thermodynamic properties and kinetic mechanisms of this reaction are extensively documented. Less well-defined are the corresponding liquid phase reaction and reactions which would be characterized. as 'burning' of aluminum. This paper reviews the solid aluminum-oxygen reaction as a foundation for discussing the flammability of aluminum in oxygen-enriched atmospheres. Appropriate thermodYDan3ic analysis and kinetic reaction mechanisms are developed. Available models of aluminum burning are reviewed and evaluated, The appropriate information for design of engineering applications of aluminum in oxygen atmospheres? is summarized.

This paper aims to study the influence and action mechanism of collector Y-89 on the flotation of auriferous pyrite. The measurement to identify adsorption quantity, IR and XPS spectrum analysis and flotation experiment made on the pure mineral were conducted. The research results show that when the dosage of MIBC is 20 mg/L, and pH of 8, the dosage of Y-89 over 60 mg/L, the pyrite recovery rate is greater than 80%.And when the dosage of Y-89is 60 mg/L, dosage of MIBC 20 mg/L, the pH in a wider range (pH=4~9), the recovery is greater than 75%. When the pH is above 10, the pyrite is depressed and its recovery rate is found to be dramatically dropping. Adsorption quantity measurement also shows that the strong alkaline conditions inhibit the adsorption of Y-89 on the surface of auriferous pyrite. IR measurement indicates that chemisorption of Y-89 occurs on the surface of auriferous pyrite. XPS spectrum analysis indicates that without adding Y-89, oxidation reaction occurs on the surface of pyrite. But when Y-89 is added, the chemical environment of Fe on the surface of pyrite has changed. Such findings indicate that with Y-89, chemisorption occurs on the surface of auriferous pyrite.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an overcore stress measurement on the 5300 level of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, to investigate the stress regime around an experimental stope in a rock-burst-prone mine. The result indicated a stress field with unexpected magnitude and orientation [s 1 ?135 MPa (19,600 psi) oriented S 80° W). An unusual amount of rock-burst activity was encountered during subsequent excavation. A careful review of the overcore data suggested the overcore strain measurements were valid. Moreover, concentrated rock-burst activity suggested that the measured stress field did exist, but was localized and therefore did not represent the far-field in situ stress field.

The effect of discontinuities on the fracturing and mechanical behavior of shale has been extensively investigated on a laboratory scale in previous works. It is well agreed that the lamination properties, including discontinuity and lamina properties, affect the behavior of shale. However, it is still unclear how the lamination properties are affecting the stability of the shale roof in an underground coal mine entry. This paper investigated the effect of lamination properties using the discrete element method on a mine-scale entry model as an extension to the previous work conducted on laboratory scale models.

Mineral deposits of western Utah and eastern and central Nevada have produced in excess of $8,500,000,000 since 1871. Through 1965, Bingham Canyon had produced over $4,600,000,000 and seven other camps over $100,000,000 each, principally from base metals. In addition, they yield iron and uranium ores; contain the world's largest beryllium reserves; and have produced the United States' most important gold discovery in 25 years. The area is famous for its silver production and its bonanza-type precious metal deposits, but such production has become unimportant. The area's greatest producers of metallic wealth are base-metal deposits in limestones and porphyry-type copper ores. In contrast to silver's decline, gold production has been rising-the result of by-product operations at Bingham Canyon. The area also contains gold deposits in which the gold is so finely disseminated it is not recoverable by panning. The area's gold ores frequently are associated with realgar, cinnabar, and carbon. The ore deposits generally are attributed to Tertiary intrusives,* but, at Mountain City, they may be related to Paleozoic volcanism. Mountain City has yielded rich chalcocite from quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite bodies in siliceous sediments. Regional stratigraphy and structure are difficult to interpret, 69 per cent of the area being obscured by alluvium or volcanics. In general, central Nevada consists of chert, shale, silty sandstones, lavas, and pyroclastics; eastern Nevada and western Utah of many alternations of limestone, shale, and sandstone. Central Nevada has been structurally active since late Devonian. Although granitic stocks may have intruded eastern Nevada and western Utah prior to the Cretaceous, these areas remained quite stable until affected by the Laramide Revolution. Precambrian exposures, occupying 3 per cent of the area, have not been important hosts. However, the question is raised as to whether Precambrian carbonates, properly situated with respect to invading mineralizers, might yet prove to be important. This paper describes 16 precious metal camps, 6 limestone replacement districts, 2 silver-base metal vein deposits, and 9 miscellaneous types and discusses briefly the 11 * Some ores, as at Ely, are associated with intrusives of. Cretaceous age. major camps that are described in detail in this Volume.

Basic data were recorded on the decompositions that take place during thermal decomposition of siderite (FeC03). Both the naturally occurring and a synthetically prepared mineral were studied by differential thermal, thermo-gravimetric, X-ray-diffraction, and chemical (including gas) analyses. Thermal decomposition was studied in the media of dry air, moist air, dry carbon dioxide, dry helium, and dry carbon monoxide and at atmospheric and at reduced pressures. Results showed the thermal decomposition of FeC03 to be an extremely complex process, dependent on environmental factors and side reactions that cannot now be completely controlled. Therefore, full understanding of the reaction involved must depend on additional research with advanced evaluation techniques.

"The disposal of wastes is a serious environmental problem, since available landfill space is dwindling. Their treatment by pyrolysis or combustion has merit, and the corresponding fuel or power production is of technological interest. However, such processes need a rigid control of emissions. This work addresses the gaseous light hydrocarbons (LHCs) generated during sequential pyrolysis and partial oxidation of unserviceable tires, PET bottles, com wastes (DDGS) and sugarcane bagasse in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace, kept at 1000 °C. Gas chromatography was used to identify and quantify the components of the emitted gaseous light hydrocarbons. The results showed that the biomass residues generated the highest emissions of aliphatic hydrocarbons, whereas PET generated the most aromatic hydrocarbons. When stainless steel meshes were inserted in the exhaust flow, it was found that hydrocarbon emissions were curtailed; as such meshes catalyzed partial conversion of these carbon-bearing gases to carbonaceous nanomaterials.IntroductionLight hydrocarbons (LHCs) are volatile organic compounds, consisting of hydrogen and carbon with low molecular weight; the most common species are methane, ethane, propane, butane, etc. LHCs are valuable since they are a very important energy resource. However, uncontrolled release of light hydrocarbon gases to the atmosphere should be avoided [l, 2]. In this work, a development is presented for the evaluation of LHCs generated during the controlled pyrolysis/combustion of several wastes in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace. Samples of unserviceable tires, post-consumer PET bottles and waste residues from the bioethanol industry (DDGS and sugarcane bagasse) were burned. A catalyst system, consisting of stainless steel screens, was tested for its effects on the gaseous emissions."

"Résumé - Cette étude porte sur l'altération de la matière organique et des argiles dans les boues carbonatés dévoniennes du faciès ""F"" de la Formation de Pine Point et ses équivalents stratigraphiques la Formation d'Evie et l'unité bitumineuse de la base de la Formation de Horn River. La matière organique se compose principalement de bitume solide et de quelques fragments de fossiles (organo­ clastes). La majorité des échantillons ne renferment que de l'illite et des interstratifiées illite/smectite.Si on compare les températures d'homogénéïsation (Th = l00°C) des inclusions fluides de la sphalérite et des dolomites associées à la minéralisation aux températures estimées à partir de la réflec­ tance de la collinite (84°C à ll7°C), l'on ne peut pas conclure à la présence d'une anomalie ther­ mique dans le district minier de Pine Point. De plus, la réflectance des organoclastes n'est pas plus élevée dans le district minier de Pine Point que dans les localités plus éloignées des gîtes. L'analyse des minéraux argileux conduit à la même conclusion : aucune anomalie thermique n'est décelable dans les unités échantillonnées à l'intérieur du district minier de Pine Point quelque soit l'indicateur utilisé.La kaolinite et la matière organique altérée, affichant des valeurs anomales de sa réflectance, se trouve essentiellement en présence de soufre et de sulfures. Cela suggère une origine authigène de la kaolinite et une altération de la matière organique reliées au phénomènes de minéralisation.Abstract- The alteration of organic matter and clays is studied in the Devonian Pine Point Formation carbonate muds, ""F"" facies, and its lateral equivalents the Evie Formation and the biturninous unit at the base of the Horn River Formation. The organic matter is mainly composed of solid bitumen with few fossil fragments (organoclasts). Most samples contain only illite and mixed layer illite/smectite.If we compare the Th(l00°C) from fluid inclusions of sphalerite and dolomites associated with mineralization to the temperatures calculated from the reflectanœ (Ro) of the collinite (84°C to 117°C), we cannot detect a thermal anomaly in the Pine Point mining district. This result is based on the reflectance values of organoclasts from the mining district that are not higher than those reflectance values measured on organic matter (OM) away from the ore deposit. A similar conclusion is reached from the clay study: none of the parameters used allow us to identify a thermal anomaly in the samples from the mining district.The kaolinite and the altered OM showing anomalous Ro values mainly occur with sulfides and sulfur. This association suggests an authigenic origin for the kaolinite and an alteration of the OM due to the mineralization events."

The iron and steel manufacturing sector directly accounts for 7–9% of global CO2 emissions. Raw material preparation, such as iron ore sintering, pelletizing, and cock making, is the major CO2 emitter. As climate change becomes a bigger concern, steel manufacturers need to lower CO2 emissions without hindering efficiency or increasing costs. In recent years, the percentage of iron ore pellets in blast furnaces has increased due to its uniform size, good reducibility, and high tumbler index. Pelletizing is energy-intensive and emits considerable CO2. Around 20% of CO2 emissions during pellet making come from fluxes. In the present work, the authors established a novel CO2- free flux called wollastonite (CaO.SiO2) for sustainable palletization. Pellets with varying percentages of wollastonite (0–6%) are prepared and tested for chemical, physical, and metallurgical properties. Image analysis through an optical microscope is carried out to quantify the phases of fired pellets. SEM–EDS is performed to evaluate the chemical composition of the melt and slag phases. The results showed that the reducibility index (RI) and swelling index (SI) of pellets decreased with an increase in wollastonite dosage. Pellet strength increases with an increase in wollastonite addition up to 1.2% CaO (2.27% wollastonite), and a decrease in strength is observed thereafter. The increase in strength is attributed to the increase in slag bonds. The decrease in strength beyond 1.2% CaO is mainly because of an increase in low melting eutectics and more magnetite content. Pellets with 2.27% wollastonite to get 1.2% CaO showed good physical and metallurgical properties.

In order to evaluate the flotation process, the process flow sheet was investigated. The process mineralogy of main products was studied. Through chemical mineralogical and screening analysis as well as surveying using a microscope and scanning electro-microscope, the oxidation degree and mineral composition of main-products the liberation of main minerals, the occurrence of elements such as Pb, Zn were revealed. It is pointed that to determine the flotation process, the type of prod-ucts optimum grind of original ore and middling was provided on the basis of liberation of main minerals is reliable. As correct finer ground original ore, first high-grade lead-concentrates and zinc-concentrates fast was floated from a great part of free of the galena and sphalerite of liberated. Then for finely re-ground middling of locked mineral grains of difficult liberation, mixing lead-zinc-concentrates second was floated. The four products was best in contact with characteristic of ore of Fan Kou. Therefore be obtained certain to successful economic effect.
