THE present work was undertaken to furnish information, lacking in the literature, on the deformation mechanisms active in pure titanium at room temperature. Since it was started, Rosi, Dube, and Alexander' have indicated that slip can occur in coarse-grained (2 to 6 mm diameter) titanium on the {1010} and {1011} planes and twinning can take place on the {1072}, (1122) and (1151) planes. Liu and Steinberg,' working with titanium flakes produced by fused salt electrolysis, found evidence of twinning on the {1032$, {1121), {1122}, (1123}, and (1154) planes. The crystals used in the present work were substantially longer (up to nearly 2 in. in length) and possibly purer. Production of Large Crystals It was the purpose of this part of the work to provide single crystal or large grain specimens for use in the deformation studies rather than to study the mechanism of crystal growth. Accordingly, all further exploratory studies on methods were abandoned when it was found that cold-rolled bars sealed in vacuo in individual Vycor tubes and given three or more cycles of 4 hr at 1200°C and three to five days at 850°C, gave large grains. Eighteen specimens about 0.2 in. square x 2 in. long yielded 33 useful grains, ranging from Va in. to nearly 2 in. in length, with an agreeably wide range of orientations, Fig. l. The 0.25 in. thick strip from which the starting specimens were cut had been reduced 67 pct on 18 in. diameter rolls from a scalped, hot-forged (959" to 1000°C), arc-melted, iodide titanium ingot. Thc bar was at room temperature, but the rolls were at 200°C. Reductions of about 0.03 in. per pass were used. The bar was cut into four segments, each of which was rolled in a somewhat different manner. No effect on the growth of large grains was noted. The composition of the titanium, determined on turnings from the ingot scalping operations, is given in Table I. The Rockwell A hardness of the ingot was 26. The standard starting specimens, about 1/4x1/4x2 in., were milled on all four sides, hand polished on 280 and 400 mesh emery papers, etched for 3 min in a 50 HF-50 glycerine solution, rinsed, and dried in alcohol and ether just before sealing them in Vycor tubes. The average specimen weight was 7.5 g, and the tube volume was 6.5 cc. A vacuum of less than 1 micron pressure was applied. The specimen tubes were placed in an evacuated Inconel muffle to minimize the danger of collapse of the glass tubes at temperature. In practice the specimens were first heated to 1200 °C for 4 hr and then transferred fairly quickly to an 850°C furnace where they were held for three to five days. This cycle was repeated at least three times before the specimens were cooled, removed from the tubes, lightly polished and etched on one surface for examinstion. Those in which large grains had not developed were resealed in Vycor and returned to the cycling. Satisfactory specimens (about one out of every four cycled) were polished with emery paper on all four side;, then metallographically polished using ctchinz between wheels to remove distorted metal and, finally, given a very light etch to reveal the grain boundaries. This was necessary because the surface was roughened by the sublimation of titanium under high temperature vacuum conditions. Specimens were identified by TiXl numbers using supplementary letters to designate specific grains.

In 1900, as far as available records show, there were only two producer-gas power installations in the United States. In June, 1915, the number probably exceeded 1,000. Of this number, some 84.5 per cent comprised small plants using anthracite, and only about 15 per cent of the total number utilized bituminous coal and lignite. In addition to these, two plants used wood, and three or four used oil. In the main, however, the larger sized units are operating on bituminous coal and lignite.

Single-phase aluminum containing 1 to 600ppm copper was studied in 7 to 26 pct HCl. The corrosion rate in the autocatalytic stage was resolved into a constant intrinsic component and an acdelerating autocatalytic component, and attention was focused on the part of this stage where the corrosion rate could be described by a simple empirical relation. Autocatalytic corrosion in this period was localized and its rate increased rapidly with copper content and with the strength and chlaride content of the acid. The effects of adding cupric ion to 16 pct HCI were functionally and quantitatively inconsistent with the autocatalytic rates observed. A theory of these rates was given based on the deposition in nzetallic contact with the aluminum of part of the copper introduced by corrosion. It has long been known in a general way that aluminum containing sufficient copper suffers in hydrochloric acid an autocatalytic acceleration of corrosion resulting from the introduction into the acid of copper ions and their reduction on the specimen as elemental copper, which provides cathodes of low hydrogen overvoltage.'-3 In a previous paper, this phenomenon was identified in single-phase high-purity material at copper levels as low as 20 ppm and an empirical equation describing autocatalytic corrosion rates in 16 and 20 pct HC1 was presented. In the present work the range of acid strength and chemistry studied was extended, a more accurate empirical equation for the autocatalytic rate was determined, and a theory of this rate was formulated. A major source of interest in this system is the intergranular corrosion, which is also strongly influenced by copper content,= and an objective of the present work on general corrosion was to provide a basis for studying the role of copper content in intergranular corrosion, which is experimentally much less accessible.

The effects of using surfactant solutions while diamond drilling in amygdaloidal basalt of the Upper Michigan copper mining district were investigated. Nonionic, anionic, and cationic surfactant solutions, all biodegradable, were tested with size AX surface-set bits mounted on a drill instrumented for continuous recording of thrust, rotational speed, and torque levels. Water flow and penetrations rates were also recorded. A drilling study was carried out, testing two rotational speed levels, two diamond bit grade levels, and four flushing agents (including water as a control). Comparison of all low-speed/high-thrust groups of tests shows that the non-ionic surfactant produced a 35% overall average increase in penetration rate over water, the anionic a 29% increase, and the cationic a 28% increase. These increases in, penetration rates resulted in a 22 to 26% reduction in cost over flushing with water alone. With the high-speed/low-thrust combination, the surfactants produced less benefits in penetration rate increases over water (14% increase for nonionic, 14% decrease for anionic, and 2% decrease for cationic type). Particle size analyses were run on drill cuttings produced by the three surfactant solutions and by water. All surfactant solutions showed a 20 to 50% increase in solids content over that of water alone. Since flushing rates were constant, these increases in solids content agree well with the penetration rate changes. The diamonds were recovered from each bit by matrix dissolution, and bit wear was measured in terms of total loss of weight. Flushing with surfactant solutions showed a savings in bit wear in most cases. The drill team noted also that surfactant flushing improved recovery of drill core by allowing easier removal of the core from the barrel.

Para tal estudo, foi utilizado um modelo multi-fásico de sinterização para a avaliação da recirculação dos gases de saída do processo. Foram analisados cinco casos de recirculação dos gases de saída, do processo de sinterização, visando, sempre uma operação estável do processo. Os resultados de simulação indicam alargamento da frente de combustão com a recirculação dos gases de saída e a possibilidade da redução do consumo do combustível sólido. Como resultado, houve aumento da fração de cálcio-silicatos, proporcionando melhoria da redutibilidade do sínter, além da redução da emissão de CO2 e PCDD/Fs na máquina de sínter.

The formation of nitrogen oxides, the decay of carbon monoxide, and the concentrations of residual hydrocarbons in the secondary combustion zones of propane-air and methane-air flames were studied in three enclosed burners designed to simulate gas appliances such as space and water heaters. The effect of thermally or chemically perturbing the combustion gases above these flames was determined theoretically and by means of factorial experiments. The concentrations of air pollutants and the flame temperatures were measured, and the effects of ingress of secondary air into the primary and secondary combustion zones, flame stability, burner port surface, and simulated recycling of combustion gases were noted. Based on this study, four principles were derived that, applied to gas appliance design, will insure minimal emissions of these air pollutants: 1. Oxides of nitrogen can best be kept low by depressing peak temperatures to about 3,050° F. 2. If this is not possible, then the secondary combustion zone should be cooled rapidly to this temperature. 3. Carbon monoxide concentrations can be limited by rapid induction of secondary air. 4. Hydrocarbon concentrations can be controlled by designing for well-seated, stable flames. In addition, empirical reaction rates were derived that predict the concentrations of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide in the primary and secondary combustion zones.

Introduction The economics of open-pit mining de¬pend heavily on the cost of overburden removal. It is necessary to maintain a pit slope as steep as possible. Steeper slopes lower the volume of overburden to be handled, thus lower the cost of material handling. There is, however, a limit to which the pit slopes in any given situation can be steepened. Steepening beyond this point could jeopardize the pitwall stability, ren¬dering it unsafe. It might even result in curtailment of pit production. Several factors affect the stability of pitwalls. Some are natural, such as topogra¬phy and regional and local geology. Others are man made, such as pit geometry, ground water management, equipment, drilling and blasting, and the type of excavation. Greater control can be exercised in the latter with proper planning and by following a set of procedures based on field experiences. This article deals with one such control¬lable factor - drilling and blasting. The eco¬nomics of steeper pit slopes is discussed, followed by a record of drilling and blasting practices in western Canadian surface mines. Microprocessor-based instrumentation and its application to blasthole drilling is also described. Economics of steeper pit slopes The economics of steeper pit slopes is not a new issue. It should be reinforced, though, that pit slopes must be as steep as possible to ensure maximum recovery of minerals at a minimum stripping ratio. For operating, economic, and safety reasons, different pit slopes are maintained during different phases of pit development. Figure 1 shows a hypothetical ore body, cylindrical shape, with a radius of 225 m (740 ft) and located 30 m (100 ft) beneath the surface. The mining operations are planned at two different slope angles of 25° and 40°. The ultimate pit depth was established on the basis of the criterion of "break even pit." The variation of the stripping ratio at differ¬ent mine levels is shown in Fig. 2. Table I summarizes the eco¬nomics involved for two pit slopes, 25° and 40°. Figure 3 presents the profits during the life of the mine for these two pit slopes. This study shows that steeper slopes for an open pit operation are far more advanta¬geous than flatter slopes. But, what is the optimum slope at any one point in the life of a moving pit? And how can the stable slopes be maintained over the short- and long-term? Canadian blasting practices A survey of blasting practices in western Canadian surface coal mines revealed that, at most mines, hard consolidated overburden is drilled and blasted. Blastholes are drilled with rotary crawler-¬mounted rigs using bits in the 220 to 310 mm-diam (8.5 to 12 in.-diam) range. Typi¬cal hole depths are 12 to 18 m (40 to 60 ft) to accommodate the pit bench heights of 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft). For a 12-m (40-ft) high bench, a typical hole will be 14.6 m (48 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). Half of this hole will typically be a powder column and half will be stemmed. For a 15-m (50-ft) bench, a typical hole will be up to 18 m (66 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling. Drilling patterns are usually 9 m (29.5 ft) spacing and 9 m (29.5 ft) burden. During 1983, The Youghiogheny and Ohio Coal Company's lost-time-incidence rate was 8.1, equal to the average for underground bituminous operators. How- ever, one half of all lost-time injuries were low back, back and neck related. In reviewing these results, we determined that substantial improvement could be made. We investigated existing back schools and the possibility of opening an in-house clinic. In September 1984, we began The Youghiogheny and Ohio Coal Company's Back Care Program. The objectives of the program are to reduce the number of back injuries incurred at the work site, hasten recovery time, decrease medical and workers' compensation costs and provide the employee with a thorough understanding of his problem. A state-of-the-art clinic capable of treating injuries to the spine and extremities has been established at the work site. The clinic is staffed by a licensed physical therapist and is offered to all employees on a voluntary basis under physician referral. The approach to treatment is multi-phasic. For the typical patient, the initial goal is to reduce pain and correct dysfunction. Treatment modalities such as auto-traction, extension exercises, ultra sound and moist heat are frequently used. During this period the patient is given extensive education regarding his problem. As soon as more vigorous activity can be tolerated, a work-hardening pro- gram consisting of job simulation activities designed to improve flexibility, strength and functional capability is begun.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. In this volume and in a series of Reports of Investigations immediately following the factual data obtained during the project are reported. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location und name are shown on the appropriate half-township map.-The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this eeri88 of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1 (R. I. 4251). The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table tor each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

The interior of West Australia is an arid table-land, elevated 1400 feet above the sea. This plateau is flanked to the south by the Tertiary limestones which fringe the Great Australian Bight. It is bordered northward by the Carboniferous beds of the Fitzroy river and westward by the granite of the Darling hills, while to the cast this wide area, about 900 miles square, slopes downward imperceptibly into an undulating plain of sand, which stretches with dismal persistence across the boundary of South Australia. The waters of the ocean receded from this tract of land long ago; it is probably the oldest landsurface on the globe, and represents the basal wreck of a much larger continent. Fig. 1 is a map of this region. The Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie gold-fields are situated in the southwestern part of the region. The rock-formation consists of granite penetrated by diorites and andesites. The latter are occasionally associated with tuff's, which have been readily mistaken for sedimentaries. There are no fossil-bearing rocks, such as would afford a datum-line from which to measure the relative geological age of the prevailing formation. On the extreme edges of the mining territory there are, it is true, remnants of sand-rock which are considered identical with the " Desert Sandstone " of Queensland, determined by Daintree to be of Mesozoic age. But even this formation has evidently been laid down so long subsequent to the underlying rocks that it serves merely to emphasize their much greater antiquity. In their characteristics and in their relations to each other, the granite and the diorite of the Coolgardie region appear to me much to resemble the Laurentian granite and the Huronian

"With a total value to date of well over $200,000,000.00 for its ore production, the Tintic mining district, which is about 100 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, ranks as one of the three main ore producing areas of Utah. In it are located the biggest silver mines of the country, silver having been the chief metal produced in the camp since its start. Tintic's silver production to date has a total value of over $ 100,000,000, approximately half of the value of the camp's ore production, the balance being roughly divided among lead, gold and copper.Discovery of the camp was made in the late sixties. Lack of transportation and ore reduction facilities delayed extensive development of the area for nearly a decade.In recent years Tintic's ore production has ranged from 350,000 to 400,000 tons annually. In 1 924 the camp produced one-eighth of the silver produced in the nation with an output of 7,729,700 ounces. Its lead production was 77,765,000 pounds and its gold production 26,285 ounces.The known mineralized area of the district is found in a broad syncline striking north and south. The west limb plunges sharply and extends for a distance on its dip of approximately one and a half miles to the trough. The east limb raises gently through a distance of about two miles to the east limit of known mineralization. This general structure is broken by local faulting throughout the district, the local structural conditions playing an important part in the ore deposition. The north end of the fold is obscured by a rhyolite flow and the south end stops against a monzonite stock."

We would like to thank Mr. Mandolesi for his informative paper on rails from strand cast steel. The chemical and structural properties of the strand cast steel were of particular interest to us. We would like to supplement his excellent report with some of Inland's findings from our Caster with submerged nozzles and strands reduced in line from 7" x 7" to 5-5/8" square cross section. Inland has conducted extensive segregation studies on AISI 1049 steel - Fine Grain 0.50% carbon and 0.75% manganese. Based on approximately 80 heats, our normal segregation pattern results in analyses of .49% carbon in the center, and 0.50% carbon at the midway and edge position. The sulfur analysis averages .025% in the center, .027% midway, and .026% at the edge. Note the slight negative segregation between the center and midway position. This steel, being lower carbon and probably cast nearer the liquidus, resulted in less segregation than the 0.80% carbon rail steel.

ANTHRACOAL is a mixture of small particles of anthracite coal and a matrix of practically pure carbon, formed from the distillation of coal-tar pitch or other suitable bitumen. It is a hard, dense, homogeneous mass, with a silvery luster and in color varies from silvery to grayish black. When pushed from the oven, it develops only partly the fingerlike structure of coke; but, unlike coke, it has a tendency to remain in blocky masses. When struck with a hammer or passed through crushing rolls, it breaks with an irregular fracture, similar to anthracite, but with very little fines. Due to its density, anthracoal is harder, tougher, and stronger than coke. The results of a test made by the blast-furnace department, of the Bethlehem Steel Co., on two barrels of anthracoal are given in Table 1. Este trabalho aborda um estudo de caso sobre a transferência do conhecimento siderúrgico de colaboradores da empresa para o sistema que realiza o controle de produção da Usina de Cubatão. Este processo de transferência foi realizado em etapas até a implantação do sistema que registra os principais eventos realizados pelas máquinas operacionais. Estes registros são armazenados em banco de dados e com o uso de ferramentas, podem ser apresentados em relatórios e gráficos. Com isso, a empresa possui um sistema de produção muito confiável, por ter condição de analisar e diagnosticar cada etapa do processo de produção e acompanhar com precisão as falhas e acertos operacionais. Quando há estabilidade no processo e todos os eventos acontecem de acordo com a condição normal de operação, o sistema possibilita um controle aprimorado no consumo de gás e da produtividade. O método utilizado é baseado em um projeto de experimentos que examina a influência dos principais parâmetros de controle no processo de produção industrial.

Enthalpy-entropy diagrams are presented for natural gases of 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0 gravity over the pressure range of 5 to 10,000 Ib. per sq. in. and temperature range of 32º to 700°F. The charts indicate directly the work requirement and temperature rise for adiabatic compression or temperature change for free emansion of natural eases. Computation and Uses of Charts The Mollier diagram (Fig. 4), in which the enthalpy (heat content) is plotted against the entropy with lines of constant temperature, pressure,, and in some cases volume, has been found most convenient when dealing with the compression, expansion, and flow of fluids. In dealing with the flow of fluids, the sum of the increase in the enthalpy, AH, plus the increase in kinetic energy, AM —, plus the increase in potential energy, ?MZ, representing the total increase in energy of the fluid in flow, is equal to the sum of the heat q, and work added, —w, to the fluid while flowing between the entrance and exit of the flow system. AH + AM— + ?MZ = q-w [1] In cases where there is no significant change in potential energy or in kinetic energy (velocity), it follows that the increase in enthalpy is equal to the total energy supplied to the fluid. Under such conditions' the changes in the property of the fluid as it flows through a throttling valve, choke, or any other similar arrangement, may be read directly from the enthalpy-entropy diagram by following a horizolltal line between the known pressures' When compressing Or expanding a gas by means of a Or or engine in which no heat is added to or subtracted from the gas, but only work done, the changes in the properties of the gas may be determined along a vertical line of constant entropy between the entering and exit pressures. The power required for the compression of the gas may be readily determined by converting the increase in enthalpy into the desired units. The enthalpy-entropy diagram for natural gases is to the gas engineer what the steam diagram is to the steam-power engineer. For this reason it would be extremely convenient if a reasonably satisfactory enthalpy-entropy diagram could be prepared as a function of the gravity of the gas. A careful study of the known properties of natural gas indicate that this is possible. The effect of temperature upon the enthalpy at constant pressure is expressed as the "heat capacity" or "specific heat" of the gas. The best available data for natural and petroleum refinery gases indicates the relationship shown in Fig. I. From this it is clear that the specific heat of natural gases is a function only of the gas gravity and the temperature at atmospheric pressure. Calcium ferrite slags are often associated with Professor Yazawa due to his pioneering work on the thermodynamics of this type of melts. Over the past years CSIRO has invested some effort in studying physico-chemical properties of such melts to fill in some gaps in our knowledge and explore opportunities for application of the understanding developed. These investigations cover thermodynamics, transport properties of calcium ferrite based slags, as well as the kinetics of reactions of such slags with refractories. The present paper provides an overview of some of these studies and highlights some of the interesting behavior of such melts, The oxidation state of copper and arsenic in calcium ferrite based slags are predominantly Cu+ and As3+, respectively, at oxygen potentials below 10-7 atm. The concentration of CU2+ in such slags becomes significant at oxygen potentials of greater than 10-7 atm at 1300 °C. The activities of CuO0.5 and AsO1.5 in calcium ferrite slags show strong deviations from the Raoultian Law, while that of CoO is very close to ideal behaviour with respect to pure solid CoO. Addition of SiO2 to calcium ferrite slags can have significant effects on the activities of FeO and Fe2O3 and hence the stability of magnetite phase. Transfer of oxygen in calcium ferrite slags is fast with diffusivity of 2x 103 cm2/s at 1350 °C and activation energy of 16 kcal/mol. Presence of solid phases, such as magnetite, has pronounced effect on the viscosity of calcium ferrite slags. The observed dependence on solid loading and shear rate indicates deviation from Newtonian behaviour. The interfacial tension between copper mattes and calcium ferrite slags is strongly dependent on the matte grade, with the determined values being much lower than the corresponding ones for interfacial tension between similar mattes and iron silicate slags. MgO, Cr2O3 and MgCr2O4 have low solubility in calcium ferrite slags and their solubility increases with increasing copper oxide content of the slag at 1300°C. The oxidation state of the slag has strong effects on phase transformation, dissolution rate and disintegration of refractories in calcium ferrite slags.
