This paper outlines the trends in gold production since the discovery of America, in the world as a whole, and in the principal producing regions as well. World production climbed at an average rate of about 20,000,000 oz. per 5-year period until the record all-time output of 111,307,000 oz. in the period ending with 1915. Production fell off during the war period, but has been mounting since 1925, and will probably be nearly 100,000,000 oz. for the 5-year period ending in 1930. Total world production of gold from 1492 to the end of 1930, as closely as can be determined, is more than 1,061,000,000 fine ounces. More than one-half of this total, or about 575,000,000 oz., has been mined since 1900. In percentage of world production, the United States jumped from 4.8 per cent for the decade 1831-1840 to 44.5 per cent for the five years ending with 1855. This is the highest figure ever reached by this country, although, with the exception of the 10-year period ending 1865, it ranked first among the nationa from 1849 until the end of 1905. During the 5-year period ending with that year, the United States produced 24.7 per cent of the world's gold. The tremendous increase from South Africa following 1890 resulted in that country's becoming the largest contributor for the five years 1906-1910, a position it has held with increasing dominance ever since. Relegated to second place in the period 1906 to 1910, the United States produced nearly 20 per cent of the world's new gold until 1920. From 1921 to 1925 it averaged 13.6 per cent and since then it has continued to decline in relative importance, accounting for only 10.9 per cent in 1927. Final figures for 1930 may place Canada second among the gold producers of the world.

This report covers the work on developing criteria for determining when a hazard exists when mining stratified mineral deposits beneath bodies of surface water. The nature of water bodies is considered, the disturbance to the strata induced by mining is described, inundation case histories reviewed, reasonable water inflows derived, and methods of mining to prevent or minimize the hazard are presented. Criteria are given whereby effected industries and agencies can recognize a potential hazard and plan a mine accordingly, releasing considerable mineral reserves otherwise considered unminable.

An Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between glass sphere and silica plate in CnTAC1 (n=12, 14, 16, 18) solutions. The results showed the presence of long-range attractive forces that can be fitted to single exponential functions. With a given surfactant, the attractive force increased with increasing concentration, and reached a maximum at the point of charge neutralization (p.c.n.). The decrease in the attractive force above the p.c.n. is probably due to the inverse orientation of the surfactant molecules. A plot of the log (p.c.n.) vs. the number of carbons in the hydrocarbon chains of the Cn TACI homologues showed a linear relationship with a slope of -0.37, indicating that the surfactant adsorption entails a decrease in free energy by -0.85 kT per mole of CH2 (or CH3) group. These results suggest that the adsorption of long-chain surfactants is controlled by hydrocarbon chain association during the process of forming surface hemi-micelles (or domains). Possible origins of the long-range attractions are discussed on the basis of the results presented in this communication.

Reverse sensitivity is a critical issue for all extractive activities. Extractive industries can only establish in the location of the particular resource sought to be extracted. Avoiding a location near sensitive activities (such as residential activities) may, therefore, be more difficult for extractive industries, than for other industry (such as dairy factories).   This paper focuses on the following matters: +        principles to be derived from case law, +       district and regional council approaches managing reverse sensitivity effects, and +        avoiding, remedying or mitigating reverse sensitivity effects in the future.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research to evaluate the potential for developing an in situ leach mining process that will selectively extract manganese from oxide ores, leaving gangue relatively undisturbed. To accomplish this, a geochemical approach, based on deposit-specific information such as mineralogy and geology, is used to constrain the operating parameters of the system. Among the studies being conducted are (1) leaching experiments to define reaction mechanisms and kinetics, (2) detailed petrologic characterization at the microscopic scale to assess Mn distribution and leaching efficiencies, (3) deposit characterization and evaluation, and (4) development of potential Mn recovery schemes. Data from these studies are being used to develop engineering design information for an in situ mining process. Specific details of the Bureau's research project are discussed, including results obtained to date.

It is important to produce and utilize highly reactive coke in order to reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emissions through improving shaft efficiency in blast furnace. The present study aimed to investigate the transformation of iron minerals and properties of iron coke (the coke mixed iron ore fines). Along with the increase of iron ore fines, cold strength displayed a slight downtrend and the pore structure wasn’t inferred to be a major factor affected the properties of iron coke. During carbonization, the majority of mixed iron oxides were reduced to metallic iron by CO and H2 and the degree of metallization achieved to approximately 75%. Nevertheless, produced metallic iron was oxidized by pure CO2 during gasification. Iron coke reactivity index (ICRI) was obviously enhanced and the iron coke strength after reaction (ICSR) drastically decreases, which were also significantly influenced by crystal structure of carbon.

Cerro Vanguardia SA (CVSA), property of AngloGold Ashanti, mines gold and silver from a system of vetiforme orebodies located in the south of the Argentine Patagonia, in the Province of Santa Cruz.Surface mining techniques are applied to develop a series of narrow pits with an average waste to ore ratio of 26:1. This quite unique constraint brings into focus the need to maximise inter-ramp and final wall angles, leading to a strong need to optimise wall control drilling and blasting in order to reduce back-break damage to an absolute minimum.The paper describes a program of applied investigation and design modification implemented during?2008?and?2009 in?two?separate pits of Cerro Vanguardia. Three distinct yet complementary damage mechanisms were identified and observed during the field components of the work; vibration induced strain fracturing, surface cratering around blasthole collars and quasi-static loading and unloading of the surrounding rock mass as a consequence of poorly controlled confinement.With these mechanisms identified, a measurement, modelling and modification campaign was conducted in order to reduce the incidence of each source of damage. Interactive design analysis and modelling, near-field vibration measurement, video capture and the application of electronic initiation technology were supported by seed wave modelling and topographic evaluation of the achieved results.Results point to the usefulness of simulation techniques for determining optimum delay timing to reduce vibration impact, while the visualisation of explosive energy distribution produced by drilling and explosive loading decisions assists in reducing the probability of over-confinement.This paper presents relevant aspects of the two fieldwork campaigns:1) describing the application of the techniques, and2) summarising the results obtained.

Field investigations and office studies were used to develop criteria and cost parameters related to the geologic aspects of the proposed project. These results were employed in optimization of layouts and comparison of alternative schemes, leading to selection of the recommended program. Study of project features included the development of subsurface shafts, tunnels, and mined storage areas, and the utilization of existing surface quarries. These project features were proposed for construction within the bedrock units underlying Chicago. Principal geologic considerations included bedrock structure, stratigraphic sequence of units, rock competence and uniformity, and requirements for aquifer protection. All geologic factors were interrelated with other project considerations such as surface hydrology, hydraulics, and urban setting. Data for analyses was acquired through an exploration program conducted intermittently between 1967 and 1971, in addition to that already available through numerous explorations and well constructions in the project area. The exploration program included seismic surveying, core drilling, geophysical borehole logging, and water pressure testing of boreholes, and water well drilling and testing. Extensive laboratory tests were conducted on core samples. The data formed the basis of studies enabling the formulation of preliminary design and siting criteria resulting in construction cost evaluation.

Experiments were carried out by adding CaF2 as catalyst in a Ar atmosphere to study the isothermal reduction kinetics of vanadium titano-magnetite carbon composite pellets under high temperature in the range from1473 to 1673K. By analyzing reduction mechanism, it was found that the rate controlling step was gas diffusion, and the activation energy was 178.39kJ•mol-1 without adding any catalysts. Adding CaF2 of 3% to vanadium titano-magnetite carbon composite pellets can decrease the apparent activation energy of reduction, and the decrease extent was 14.95kJ•mol-1. In addition, temperature is an important factor influencing on reaction rate.

All of the basic ideas presented in the fine seminar are operational in the Bureau of Mines Safety Research Mine in Bruceton.

At the outset of the war the uncontrolled production and possession of explosives obviously became a serious menace to the safety of persons and property and the successful conduct of military opera- tions. Even in the years immediately preceding the entrance of the United States into the Great War explosives were employed in attempts to wreck munitions plants as at Eddystone, Pa., or to inter- rupt transportation and conveyance by demolition of munition-laden cars as at Black Tom Island, N. Y., or by attacks on ships, bridges, and viaducts. Outrages with explosives, such as that which Holt inflicted on the Senate reception room, United States Capitol, were not infrequent, and often caused serious loss of life and injury to persons as well as destruction of property. The regular manufacturers of explosives were keenly alive to this menace and early took such steps as lay within their power to meet it as is shown by the following letter:

Rock damage around underground excavations has been an important hazard in mines and tunnels. Rock dilation generates buckling that needs to be contained before it causes damage to equipment or safety concerns to mine workers. In seismically active mines, rockburst occurrence has been widely recognized as one of the most important hazards in deep mines and tunnels. While there is a wide range of cases where rockburst hazard can be mitigated through dedicated excavation sequences, reentry procedures or exclusion zones, there are still many situations where large unexpected rockbursting may occur, relying only on rock support as the last mitigation measure to prevent production and safety losses. Considering the previous situations, surface support as mesh, plays a major role containing the failed/ejected rock and providing a safe working environment to the underground operations. While there have been considerable achievements in improving mesh resistance, with more than 26Kj/m2 of energy dissipation capacity, there is still a lack of research in the overlapping mechanism and load transfer between contiguous mesh elements. This paper presents the state of the art in static and dynamic analysis of welded and rolled mesh overlaps, based on experimentation carried on by Geobrugg in their Research Center, leaving clearly established that the difference in meshes is not only in levels of energy absorption, but also concluding that in the case of high resistance rolled meshes overlapping is not necessary and the transmission of stresses can be fully guaranteed by using suitable connecting elements. All these characteristics, supported by operational advantages as light weight and mechanized mesh installation, provides a considerable improvement in safety and productivity, improving the economic value of the project

In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil , this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states . Information given on each heavy - oil deposit includes the following items : Field and formation , location , average or range of depth , average API gravity of oil , average thickness of formation , areal extent of field , total productive wells drilled in field , discovery date of field , field status in 1963 , cumulative production to Jan. 1 , 1964 , and all known types of secondary - recovery operations initiated ( active and terminated ) in the reservoirs . The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map , and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text . As of Jan. 1 , 1964 , 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place . It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history , such as the one in Missouri , were included , the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels . To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil , industry is developing technology in several types of thermal - recovery methods . Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study for thermal - recovery techniques are : Lithology , depth , viscosity of reservoir fluids , gravity of oil , reservoir thickness , oil in place , and permeability and porosity .

THE sessions of the Institute were opened on Tuesday evening, October 26th, at Garrett's Hall, by Mr. Charles A. Otis, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements, who welcomed the Institute to Cleveland, and introduced Col. Charles Whittlesey, who ad¬dressed the Institute briefly on the coal deposits of Ohio. Col. Whittlesey described the situation and character of the coal-beds of the State, and gave a short history of the use of raw coal in the manufacture of pig-iron, and spoke of the excellent quality of metal produced. The aid that a body of scientific miners and metal¬lurgists were capable of giving in the development of coal and other mineral resources was dwelt upon, and the hope expressed that the visit of the Institute to Cleveland might be profitable as, well to its members as to the citizens of the State. The President, Mr. A. L. Holley, responded to the welcome of Mr. Otis and of Col. Whittlesey, and read an introductory address on Some Pressing Needs in the Iron and Steel Manufacture. The thermodynamic properties H - H° , (H - H° ) /T , S - Sideal , S - S° Fide al F - F° , (F F° ) /T , and activity coefficient Y for perfluorocyclobutane were calculated as functions of temperatures ( 115.22 ° to 350 ° C) and molal density (0.75 to 6.5 moles / liter ) . Improved analytical and graphical correlating techniques are described .

THERE are three objectives in translation of works of this character : to give a faithful, literal translation of the author's statements ; to give these in a manner which will interest the reader ; and to preserve, so far as is possible, the style of the original text. The task has been doubly difficult in this work because, in using Latin, the author availed himself of a medium which had ceased to expand a thousand years before his subject had in many particulars come into being ; in consequence he was in difficulties with a large number of ideas for which there were no corresponding words in the vocabulary at his command, and instead of adopting into the text his native German terms, he coined several hundred Latin expressions to answer his needs. It is upon this rock that most former attempts at translation have been wrecked. Except for a very small number, we believe we have been able to discover the intended meaning of such expressions from a study of the context, assisted by a very incomplete glossary prepared by the author himself, and by an exhaustive investigation into the literature of these subjects during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. That discovery in this particular has been only gradual and obtained after much labour, may be indicated by the fact that the entire text has been re-typewritten three times since the original, and some parts more often ; and further, that the printer's proof has been thrice revised. We have found some English equivalent, more or less satisfactory, for practically all such terms, except those of weights, the varieties of veins, and a few minerals. In the matter of weights we have introduced the original Latin, because it is impossible to give true equivalents and avoid the fractions of reduction ; and further, as explained in the Appendix on Weights it is impossible to say in many cases what scale the Author had in mind. The English nomenclature to be adopted has given great difficulty, for various reasons ; among them, that many methods and processes described have never been practised in English-speaking mining communities, and so had no representatives in our vocabulary, and we considered the introduction of German terms undesirable ; other methods and processes have become obsolete and their descriptive terms with them, yet we wished to avoid the introduction of obsolete or unusual English ; but of the greatest importance of all has been the necessity to avoid rigorously such modern technical terms as would imply a greater scientific understanding than the period possessed. The Lucky Friday mine east of Mullan, Idaho, is an outstanding example of a property in the Coeur d’Alene district where a small and insignificant- appearing silver-lead-zinc vein at the surface has changed at depth into a large vein of great importance. The Lucky Friday vein has little if any surface expression and above the 1200 level the ore shoots are small and discontinuous. Between the 1200 level and 2450 level, the lowest developed level, the main ore shoot has shown remarkable improvement on each succeeding lower level, and today the mine is one of the major lead-silver producers in the Coeur d'Alene district. History: The Lucky Friday property is on the north side of the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River in sections 25, 26 and 35, T. 48 N., R. 5 E., Hunter mining district, Shoshone County, Idaho. This is about one mile east of the town of Mullan, which serves the eastern portion of the Coeur d'Alene district. The southern part of the property is crossed by a branch line of the Northern Pacific Ry. and by U. S. Highway 10. This highway is the principal road crossing the panhandle of Idaho and connects the district with Spokane, Wash., on the west and Missoula, Mont., on the east. The main portal and surface plant of the Lucky Friday mine is at an elevation of 3365 ft, only a short distance above the valley floor and a few hundred feet from U. S. Highway 10, so the mine is readily accessible for year-round operation.

Production of oil from a narrow shoestring sand presents problems unique in the oil industry. Especially important, from both an engineering end an economic standpoint, are the limitations imposed upon well patterns and spacings by the shape of the field. This report concerns a study of the Paola shoestring, Miami and Franklin Counties, Kane., where well density of 0.85 acre per well was not uncommon to insure profitable primary recovery in a reasonable time. However, such a great number of wells increased the operator's investment and reduced his profit considerably. It was the purpose of this study to investigate various well patterns and spacings applicable to water-flooding a shoestring reservoir and the effect of these factors upon recovery of oil and the most profitable operation of the pool. The designer of well patterns for a shoestring sand should evaluate carefully the edges of the shoestring, even though they may be considered too thin to drill. These comparatively thin edges contain large quantities of recoverable oil; moreover they are resaturated with oil as the pool is water-flooded.

Bulk density tests were made on a Western U.S. coke oven plant blend to obtain bulk density control data that would be directly transferable to plant practice . Maximum bulk density values were obtained at zero surface moisture . Increase in surface moisture to about 6 percent decreased the bulk density to a minimum value . Increase in the fine grinding of the blend , at constant surface moisture , decreased the bulk density . The effect of oil on bulk density was observed with five oils at concentrations ranging from 1/8 to 1-1 / 2 gallons per ton . Maximum bulk densities were obtained within the 1 / 2- to 1 - gallon - per - ton range . Essentially the same bulk densities were obtained with petrolatum- and nonpetrolatum- containing oils . Storage effects were observed on samples tested at selected intervals from 0 to 56 days . No significant change in bulk density took place if no surface moisture was lost during storage .
