Your personal assessment of the minerals business. Gosh! When I think about what has happened to the minerals industry over the past 27 years that I have been a member of SME! There have been fundamental structural changes in the industry. And I think that SME has been quite successful in coping with these changes as well. There has been a reorientation in how the minerals industry does business. It used to be called rationalization. Today we call it reengineering. In addition, the minerals industry has become more complex and more global. Shareholders have become more vocal and demanding in the management of the business, asking for protection of their shareholders' value. In the 1980s, a fundamental change was precipitated by a merger and acquisition fever in all industries, including the minerals industry. Raiders such as T. Boone Pickens put enormous demands on companies that, in turn, had to spend substantial management time to fend off the raiders. This resulted in a major restructuring of the mining houses. Today, for example, Anaconda, Kennecott and Amax are only historical names.

Introduction The Brunswick No. 12 mine is located about 27 km (17 miles) southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick. The deposit is a stratiform massive sulfide deposit occurring in a series of sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Tetagouche Group. These rocks are generally considered to be Ordovician in age. Ore reserves at Brunswick No. 12 are 104 Mt (115 million st) grading 3.72% lead (Pb), 9.01% zinc (Zn), 0.32% copper (Cu), and 97.9 g/t (2.8 oz per st) silver (Ag). Production in 1984 was 3.5 Mt (4 million st) at 3.57% Pb, 8.91% Zn, 0.32% Cu, and 100 g/t (2.9 oz per st) Ag. Total payable silver production that year was 211 t (6.8 million oz). This made Brunswick one of the largest silver producers in Canada. Bathurst-Newcastle area and Brunswick Mining Interest in the Bathurst area was aroused in 1897 when W. Hussey discovered an iron formation at Austin Brook, just south of Brunswick No. 6 deposit. This area, and the current No. 6 area, was explored from 1897 to 1907. Iron ore was mined at Austin Brook from 1907 to 1913 and from 1942 to 1943. Any occurrence of sulfides was overlooked until 1952. In 1952, M. J. Boylen Enterprises investigated the small sulfide body associated with the Austin Brook iron formation. Other electromagnetic anomalies associated with the iron formation were investigated. The No. 6 deposit was found late in 1952, when hole B12 intersected 97.5 m (320 ft) of massive sulfides. The No. 12 deposit, 10 km (6 miles) to the north, was found in 1953. More than 30 massive sulfide deposits have since been identified in the Bathrust area. In the 1950s, St. Joe Lead Co. did extensive test work on the No. 6 and No. 12 deposits, including shafts at No. 12, lateral development at No. 12, and testing at both deposits.

Adequate planning for the development, operation, and reclamation of a surface mine requires attention to present and future uses of land, both on the mine site and in the mine vicinity. This paper outlines land use implications of surface mining, and suggests procedures that could link mine planning, mine operation, and reclamation to more general land use concerns. Mining is viewed as a temporary use of land that may irretrievably commit land resources away from some future activities, but may allow other uses, some of which may have been impossible without mining. The paper accepts the premise that surface mining should attempt to minimize environ-mental damage and to maximize future alternative uses of land by appropriate reclamation. I. This paper compares an integrated evaluation approach to decision-making with more traditional sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. The primary objective is to highlight the differences in NPV that can arise from using these evaluation methods in a top down and bottom-up approach. Results from three resource scenarios, derived from sampling a "virtual" ore body (reality) on grid spacings of 75m, 50m and 25m, are analyzed and compared.

Blaine number has long been used to evaluate the pelletising ability of iron concentrate in the industry. Much information and practical data are available about the effect of Blaine number on pelletising efficiency of different concentrate types. But not many researchers have focused on the effect of Blaine increasing method on pelletising behaviour of coarse concentrates. In this paper the effect of two different grinding methods (i.e. HPGR and Ball Mill) on physicochemical properties of coarse magnetic concentrate green and fired pellets were investigated. Microstructural studies by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) showed that the concentrate for which the Blaine number had been increased through HPGR grinding, has flake-like morphology. In contrast, increasing the Blaine number through ball mill grinding results in more granular particles. Two samples were prepared using HPGR and ball mill. The Blaine number of the HPGR product and ball mill product were 900 cm2.gr-1 and 1200 cm2.gr-1 respectively. The results revealed that pellet properties of this HPGR product are comparable to that of the ball mill product; this is due to the fact that the flake-like morphology leads to enhanced pelletising performance of coarse magnetite concentrates. O carbono tem atraído a atenção em pesquisas científicas e aplicações tecnológicas devido à diversidade das propriedades estruturais e elétricas. A proposta deste trabalho é produzir diamantes apartir de hidrocarboneto aromático em especial o Antraceno. Este possui uma estrutura de pelo menos 2 anéis aromáticos, de 5 ou 6 átomos de carbono. Com isso, ele foi submetido à pressão de 3,5GPa a uma temperatura de 1000ºC para a realização do processo de grafitização. Após este processo o grafite produzido foi misturado a liga Ni-Mn no sistema catalisador-solvente para o processo de síntese, com uma pressão de 4,5GPa e uma temperatura de 1300ºC com variação no tempo de realização da síntese de 30 a 120s. Para a realização dos cálculos dos parâmetros estruturais foi realizado ensaio de Difração de Raios-X (DRX) e para analisar os aspectos morfológicos foi realizado análise de Microscopia Eletronica de Varredura (MEV). Os resultados apresentam uma evolução dos parâmetros estruturais em relação ao tempoe temperatura de síntese, pode-se observar a presença de diamante nas amostras produzidas por Antraceno com maiores temperaturas de síntese.

In this paper, the effects of some organic compounds on the current efficiency, cell voltage and specific energy consumption during nickel electrowinning, and on the deposit features (morphology, crystallographic orientation and nanohardness) were described. The organics tested here (extractant, diluent, flocculant, lubricating oil and acid mist suppressant) are currently used in industrial plants. The results indicated that only the flocculant and acid mist suppressant exhibit relevant negative impacts on the current efficiency and energy consumption. The current efficiency dropped from 93.6 % (organic-free solutions) to 86.0 % and to 92.8% in electrolytes containing 100 mg.L-1 of acid mist suppressant and flocculant, respectively. At this concentration, their addition to the electrolyte led to increases of the specific energy consumption in the order of 18 % (acid mist supressant) and 2 % (flocculant). Cyclic voltammetry showed that Ni nucleation occurs at more negative potentials at 50 and 100 mg.L-1 of these organics in the electrolyte, thus indicating an inhibition of the deposition process. The deposit quality decreased at the higher concentration of all organics, when more hydrogen pitting was observed. The acid mist suppressant caused delamination of the Ni deposit at 50 and 100 mg.L-1. The addition of 100 mg.L-1 of flocculant and acid mist suppressant to the electrolyte increased the nanohardness of the deposit around 31 and 72%, respectively. The increase in Ni deposit hardness may lead to a decrease in the material ductility, thereby affecting the stripping and cutting of Ni sheets. Our findings may be helpful since strong adverse effect of some organics that may be present in the electrolyte were identified, thus the industry can control and optimize the organic´s dosage in the corresponding operations.

In 1984, personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the 9,550-acre Yatahoney Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) for mineral resources. This study area, in southwestern Idaho, is underlain by tuffs and basalt of Tertiary age. Owyhee County mining records and U.S. Bureau of Land Management records, and other references were examined prior to the field study. There are no known mines, claims, or prospects in or near the WSA. No evidence of mineral deposits or occurrences was observed. Oil and gas leases or lease applications are in the southern portion and northeast corner of the WSA. Although placer gold exists in the Owyhee River drainage, there are insufficient deposits of gold-bearing gravel in the Yatahoney Creek WSA to enable mining. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conduct mineral surveys of designated wilderness study areas (WSAs) 1/ to ensure mineral values that may be present are considered in wilderness recommendations. The USBM examines known mines, prospects, and mineralized sites, and the USGS performs geologic mapping, and geochemical and geophysical surveys on an areal basis.

Abstract Following discovery on the Giant property of very promising gold deposits, some of which terminate against the steeply-dipping West Bay fault, a geological study was initiated co locate possible faulted extensions of the ore. Geological mapping revealed that the ore and the shear zones to which the ore is confined are older than the fault and therefore subject co displacement by it. It also disclosed several diabase dykes which seem co provide the best basis for determining the fault movement. After applying various techniques co determine their strikes and dips, the dykes were used as structural markers and it was estimated that, subject co certain possible errors, the movement on the fault was 16,140 feet (3.06 miles) south and 1,570 feet (0.297 miles) down on the west side relative co the ease. Evidence supporting this conclusion was obtained when subsequent deep diamond-drill holes intended to test the hypothesis cut an ore-bearing major shear zone which, so far as can be determined, is nearly identical with its present correlative on the Giant property. Introduction The fault under consideration follows a northerly trend past the west side of the original settlement of Yellowknife, which is situated 600 miles north of Edmonton and 400 miles from the Northern Alberta Railway terminus at Waterways, Alberta. The mining properties chiefly concerned include the southern part of the Giant claims, on the east side of the fault, and the Con-Rycon-Demelt claims, on the west side, 3Y2 miles to the south. Geological data were also obtained from the eastern part of the A. Y.E. property, which lies south of the Giant claims, and from the Negus, Meg, Yellorex, and Kam properties, which are south and southeast of the Con-Rycon-Demelt claims. Recognition of the major faults in the Yellowknife Bay area, including the West Bay fault which appears to be the greatest, resulted from the work of Dr. A. W. Jolliffe (McGill University, formerly of the Geological Survey of Canada) in 1935 and subsequent years. It has been stated with little exaggeration that these faults rank with the largest known steeply-dipping dislocations of the earth's crust. In the winter of 1939, a mineralized shear zone named the Creek Vein was found on the Giant property. It was noticed that the space relationship between the new shear zone and a body of quartz-feldspar porphyry is roughly the same as that between the Con C-4 shear zone and a body of acidic flows lying north of the Con property. Coupling this relation with the assumption that the movement along the fault is dominantly horizontal, it was postulated that the Giant shear zone represented the faulted extension of the Con C-4 shear.

"INTRODUCTION The United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Colorado at the University of Colorado has conducted experiments to determine the amount and composition of the noncondensable gases evolved when crude shale oil is distilled under pressure.Hydrogen sulphide is one of the components found in the complex mixture of gases produced by the distillation of shale oil under pressure. This paper deals with the apparatus and method used in determining the amount of hydrogen sulphide evolved in the laboratory experimental cracking stills.The study required a complete extraction of all the hydrogen sulphide from the gas stream after it left the water-cooled distillate condensers and before the as stream entered the charcoal absorber for removing the light naphtha. In devising the method it was necessary to take into account a constant variation of velocity, pressure, and percentage of sulphide in the total gas stream coming from the still.Ordinarily, the quantitative determination of hydrogen sulphide in Gas is made by analyzing small samples taken at regular intervals. This estimation can be accomplished by use of the Bunte gas burette as modified by Tutriler,4 or by a similar method. In the industries where the flow of as is constant end of uniform composition, this practice is sufficiently accurate for plant control. For experimental work where many variables have to be taken into consideration, as in the case at hand, these methods are not applicable."

O tubo formador de espiras é uma guia que está localizada no Laying Head, especificado de acordo com a norma ASTM 335P22, e tem por função conformar o fio-máquina na forma de espiras sobre o transportador Stelmor. O Laying Head gira continuamente, durante a operação normal, sendo que a cada revolução do tubo, uma espira é produzida, cujo diâmetro é determinado pelo raio final do tubo e pela velocidade do Laying Head, em relação à velocidade do Laminador. Estes tubos, durante a laminação dos aços BEXX, sofrem um desgaste acentuado, que é provocado pela carepa formada durante a passagem do fio máquina pelas caixas d’água, durante o processo de resfriamento. Desta forma, torna-se necessário trocá-los a cada 200t laminadas do referido aço, com tempo estimado de 30 minutos de parada. Além disso, há um desgaste físico acentuado na atividade de troca dos tubos, que coloca em risco a segurança dos funcionários. Outro efeito indesejável relaciona-se com o risco de ocorrência de sucata de linha, provocada pelo rasgamento do tubo, quando são fornecidos tubos cuja composição química se apresenta no limite inferior de especificação. Há programa de laminação que exige até 6 trocas diárias de tubo. Com a proposta de se incrementar a tonelagem laminada por canal dos discos de laminação do Bloco No Twist, tornou-se necessário desenvolver um tubo com insertos de metal duro, com vistas a aumentar a vida útil dos mesmos, como também a produtividade do Laminador 2.

Interest in monitoring nucleation overpotential in electrometallurgical processes dates back some 40 years or more. Conversely, remarkable progress has been made in recent years on describing in detail the processes involved in the formation of thin films by electrodeposition. The newer body of work underscores a need for greater clarity in speaking about the role of nucleation and in the acquisition and interpretation of nucleation overpotential measurements – the aim of this paper. In electrometallurgy, it is generally desirable to form deposits that remain smooth, compact, and relatively fine-grained while the deposit grows to a thickness on the order of 5-10 mm, about 100 times thicker than technological thin films. Hence, we distinguish two kinds of nucleation that can result in formation of new grains:- (1) initial nucleation (onto the substrate surface) of islands that coalesce into growing deposit, and (2) ongoing nucleation of new grains on the deposit surface long after the substrate has been covered and ceases to have a direct influence. Nucleation overpotential of the first type should be measured on an electrode surface truly representative of a real industrial substrate. The second type requires judicious choice of electrode material – an “ideal foreign substrate”. In general neither the industrial substrate nor native metal to be deposited is suitable for measurement of the second type of nucleation overpotential, because of interference by other processes. For the future, clear terminology is needed to distinguish these two types of nucleation potential. The second is the one for which the type of plot dubbed by Moats and Derrick as an “Adcock plot” and by us as a “Kerby-Adcock plot” was first conceived and correlated with relatively thick zinc electrodeposits. The data of Moats and Derrick showing trends for copper electrodeposition on stainless steel and on copper electrodes are interpreted within this framework.

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM Contract No. H0155155, "Demonstrating the Noise Control of a Coal Preparation Plant." A Consolidation Coal Company coal preparation plant (the Georgetown Plant) was selected for demonstration of various noise control techniques and materials in a commercially operating plant. At the start of the project, the 1650 tons per hour (tph) plant was surveyed to document the existing sound levels and worker noise exposures. On the basis of the survey, individual noise sources were characterized and assigned priorities for treatment. Four categories of noise control treatments were installed in this plant: ? Resilient impact pads ? Curtains ? Chute liners ? Resilient screen decks. Currently (1977) available resilient impact pads and curtains were found to be suit-able for general use in coal preparation plants; in the Georgetown Plant, they provided significant noise reduction [6 to 10 dB(A)]. The overall performance of the chute liners which also provided useful noise reduction, was strongly dependent on the specific installation. Although the resilient screen decks have the potential for 7 to 9 dB(A) of coal/screen impact noise reduction, blinding and delamination (in composite decks) en-countered at the Georgetown Plant represented major design problems for these products. This program achieved noise reductions of up to 10 dB in various areas of the Georgetown Plant (within the restrictions imposed by the plant's operation) resulting in significant reduction in worker noise exposures.

Increasing public concern over the welfare of the environment has placed demands on the mining industry to evaluate the environmental impact of mining development. This is a difficult task and involves considering the influence of a multitude of variables on complex processes over a long time period. Few studies which focus on the evaluation of the environmental impact of mining have been conducted and, therefore, there is little past experience to rely upon. This article describes some of the work done to evaluate the potential environmental impact of mining development in Minnesota. Interest in developing the major copper and nickel sulfide deposits near the wilderness areas of northeastern Minnesota aroused concern regarding the environmental impact of mining development in the region. As a result laboratory and field studies were initiated to investigate the potential for trace metal leaching and acid generation due to dissolution of Duluth gabbro. Chemical equilibrium computer modeling was conducted to aid in data interpretation. The goals of the study included the investigation of leaching mechanisms and rates of release (1, 2).

The Victorville cement plant of the Southwestern Portland Cement Co. is located about 1 mile from the city of Victorville, Calif. Two transcontinental railway systems, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and the Southern Pacific Railroad, afford shipped facilities. The plant is modern and well kept, as the officials, especially the higher operating officials, take pride in the appearance of the place. Dust has been practically eliminated by the installation of dust collectors and wet grinding. The plant has a rated capacity of 5,000 barrels of cement daily.

The Hartley layered mafic igneous complex within the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe contains economically-recoverable quantities of platinum group metals and gold, nickel, copper and cobalt. The recoverable metals are concentrated in a thin gently-dipping stratigraphic unit - the Main Sulphide Zone. The Hartley Platinum mine, jointly owned by BHP and Delta Gold NL, is scheduled to come on stream at the end of 1996 at an initial mining rate of 2.16 million tonnes per annum and will produce approximately 150 000 oz of platinum and 3300 tonnes per annum of nickel, as well as saleable amounts of palladium (110 000 oz), rhodium (11 500 oz) and copper (2232 tonnes).

Central Norseman Gold Corporation was established in 1935 and has been mining on the Norseman field in Western Australia since then. It is Australia’s longest continuously operating gold mining operation at nearly 80 years, although it has had its periodic challenges in the intervening years.Over the last 40 years, a series of open pit mines around the Dundas Goldfield have supplied lower cost mill feed to the Phoenix Mill at Norseman from time to time but this has largely come to an end for the foreseeable future. Now that underground ore sources are once again the principal mill feed, there are several challenges to be met for an ongoing profitable operation.During the last 20 years, there have been three different owners and this has affected the manner in which the operations were managed quite significantly. These differing approaches are contrasted and examined in some detail from both the operational and financial aspects.Planning of a downsized operation to ensure sustainable profitability in the future in a mining environment where there has rarely been more than two to four years of reserves ahead of the mill for planning purposes has been a significant challenge. This paper will be of interest to those who are actually developing a mineral prospect or planning to do so, as well as to investors who are considering the problem of financing the development of the prospect, so that they may know what the risks are and what capital expenditures are necessary before a prospect may become a mine. The term "prospect" used broadly, as it is in this paper, is defined as any property that has a mineral showing of sufficient interest to warrant development, irrespective of prior work, Such previous exploration, however, may be extensive and consist of several tunnels or adits connected by raises, or of shafts with several levels. There may also be a small mining and milling plant on the prospect which, because of the lack of capital for development or the lack of markets for the products, is now idle. Such prospects may warrant further capital investment for development work or for a mine plant to raise to the stage of profitable production.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a soldabilidade do aço da classe API 5L X80 de fabricação nacional quanto ao trincamento pelo hidrogênio. Para isto, o aço foi soldado pelo processo arame tubular usando como metal de adição o arame AWS E110-MC com 1,6 mm de diâmetro e como gás de proteção a mistura 75% Argônio+25%CO2. Foram adotados quatro níveis de energia de soldagem, 0,7 kJ/mm, 1,10kJ/mm, 1,60 kJ/mm e 2,00 kJ/mm e o ensaio de soldabilidade utilizado foi o WIC. Para as quatro energia de soldagem foi constatada a presença de trincas que iniciavam na região de grãos grosseiros da ZTA (RGGZTA) e se pronunciavam para a zona fundida (ZF). A ZTA apresentou um comportamento microestrutural com presença de bainita e a ZF com predominância de ferrita acicular. A microdureza na ZF foi superior em relação às demais regiões.

The extractive industries response to community engagement due to social and political pressures in the 1980s and 1990s was the starting point of development leading to the modern function of corporate social responsibility.Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater transparency and responsibility of corporate organisations and who possess greater awareness of the communities they participate in, the mining sector faces another step change in how it approaches and integrates corporate social responsibility, transparency and engagement.Mining is seeking reserves of lower grades, in more sensitive environments and in countries with minimal transparency and governance. Not only are the locations changing but so to the stakeholders to engage with and issues to contend with. An increasingly savvy opposition, including not just the ‘green hippies’ but the Gen-Ys interested in the wider sustainability debate and Baby Boomers moving to life style environments, are now questioning mining’s behaviour and encroachment into ‘their space’. Issues including effect on lifestyle amenity, property value, energy efficiency, social provision; concepts such as ‘doing more with less’, participatory engagement, increasing transparency and balancing economic, environment, cultural and social aspects are becoming the norm.The traditional model of supporting local communities, communicating plans and providing employment, community investment and indigenous support programs is not enough. Our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities and play a role in addressing the global sustainability issues.This paper draws on corporate social responsibility trends, integrated functions and implementation approaches through the application of activities within Newmont operations across Asia Pacific.The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities do not necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.
