A separação magnética ocupa uma posição importante na concentração de minérios de ferro e há grande interesse em avaliar a sua aplicabilidade na etapa de projeto.Isso pode ser realizado por meio de uma caracterização adequada do minério e do uso de ensaios em bancada. O presente trabalho aplicou uma metodologia baseada na caracterização para avaliação do potencial de aplicação da separação magnética de baixa intensidade no WDRE, bem como o separador magnético de alto gradiente (HGMS) Rapid para dois minérios de ferro itabiríticos. Estudos detalhados de caracterização granulométrica, química e mineralógica das amostras, britadas abaixo de 1,18 mm, foram realizados. As análises demonstraram as diferentes composições mineralógicas dos minérios, sobretudo no tocante aos teores de magnetita e hematita. A fim de caracterizar a distribuição dos componentes magnéticos das diferentes amostras preparadas foi realizado o seu fracionamento utilizando o separador magnético Isodinâmico Frantz, que permitiu estabelecer os intervalos de intensidade de corrente preferencial de ocorrência das principais fases presentes nas amostras, sendoos resultados aplicados com sucesso na previsão da separação magnética.

"Five main lignite seams occur in the Tertiary Ravenscrag Formation in the Eastevan area, at depths of 100 feet or less. They are named, in ascending order: the Boundary, Estevan, Souris, Roche Percee and Short Creek seams. A total sequence of approximately 250 feet is represented by the coal beds and interstratified clays, silts and sands. Strata dip to the southeast at 25 feet per mile or less and trike northeast. Large areas underlain by coal seams at shallow depths are delineated. Reserve calculations are dependent on detailed information on seam thicknesses and feasible stripmining depths. The stratigraphically higher seams are thinner on the average than lower seams and this, together with the increase in elastic size fractions in higher strata, suggests a retreat of a Tertiary marine margin to the south during the closing depositional history of coal seams and associated strata."

I had the good fortune to attend the above Conference which was held in Kanpur, India, on 11-15 December, 1995. The Conference was held in honour of Professor P.C. Kapur of the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. Professor Kapur was one of the early students of legendary teacher and researcher of mineral beneficiation, Professor Doug Fuerstenau of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. I have attended my fair share of international conferences and this one certainly rated at the top of the list on several counts. With an open-hearted hospitality which one might almost take for granted once you have spent some time in India, the organizers of the Conference looked after every need of their guests, including breakfast and transport to and from the conference centre, wonderful traditional lunches and dinners and outstanding entertainment in the evenings. The papers were generally of a high standard, and debate flowed enthusiastically and freely. Several international guests delivered seminal papers in their fields as discussed below.

Extensive drilling for gas and increased pipe-line building were the major petroleum activities in West Virginia during 1937. According to the West Virginia Department of Mines, 1034 permits to drill were issued. A running account of operations from trade journals and other reports shows that 1041 wells were drilled, resulting in 193 oil wells with 1238 bbl. of daily production; 680 gas wells with 1,048,057,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow; and 168 dry holes. The new oil-well average is 6.4 bbl. per well per day; the gas-well average is 1,541,260 cu. ft. per well per day; the ratio of dry holes to completions is 16.13 per cent. Very little attempt was made to develop new supplies of oil. Because of the continued low price, operators evidently considered it good business to leave oil in the ground rather than to produce it at a loss or on a small profit basis. The principal oil wells completed, by counties, are: Calhoun, 16; Clay, 10; Pleasants, 17; Ritchie, 42; Roane, 16; Tyler, 13; Wetzel, 11; Wirt, 14; Wood, 13. The leading counties in gas, with the number of successful wells in each, are: Boone, 54; Braxton, 31; Cabell, 48; Calhoun, 46; Gilmer, 82; Kanawha, 134; Lincoln, 44; Ritchie, 56; and Wayne, 26. General State of the Industry In Table 1 will be found an approximate summary of oil and gas territory and reserves, oil and gas production and number of oil and gas wells. The amount of land under lease is an approximation, because the exact figures are not available through any public or private agency. The proved land and reserves represent the opinion of the writer. The oil production for 1937 is subject to revision, and the gas production for the same year is only an estimate, based on demand and supply. The number of oil and gas wells now active is also an approximation, based on previous studies, and revised for completions and abandonments. Principal, Areas of Activity In Boone County, 62 wells were drilled in various localities, resulting in 4 oil wells and 54 gas wells with 18,170,000 cu. ft. of new production.

Although the exact date of the commencement of such activities in India is not certain, Indians are known to have been familiar with gold, silver, copper, tin and lead and to a lesser extent with iron at least since the Vedic period (Table 1).

Chemical diffusion coefficients and heats of activation for diffusion in the NizAh fy), NiAl (6), and Ni3A1 (E) intermetallic phases and the solid solution of aluminum in nickel (( phase) were calculated from layer growth experiments. No finite diffusion coefficient for the NiAl3 ((3) inter metallic phase could be calculated. The values of the diffusion coefficients are dependent both on the method of calculation and the type of diffusion couple. The heat of activation for diffusion in the y phase was found to be 47 kcal per mole in the temperature range oj 428" to 610°C. Heats of activation of 41, 12, and 48 kcal per mole were found for diffusion in the 6, E, and ( phases, respectively , in the temperature range of 655" to 1000°C. Experiments with markers in the diffusion zone demonstrate a very pronounced Kirkendall effect. It appears that only aluminum atoms take an active part in the diffusion process during the formation of the 0 and y phases at temperatures of about 600°C. During the formation of the 6, E, and < phases at higher temperatures only nickel atoms are moving. It is suggested that the great stability of the intermetallic compounds in the Ni-A1 system governs the Kirkendall effect. SOME factors controlling layer growth during inter-diffusion in the Ni-A1 system (phase diagram, see Fig. 1) were studied by Castleman and Seig1e.l&apos;~ They found the NiA1, ((3) and NiAl3 (y) intermetallic compounds to appear in the diffusion zone of Ni-A1 couples at annealing temperatures of 400" to 625°C; the NiAl (6) and Ni3A1 (E) intermetallic compounds appeared in y-Ni couples at annealing temperatures of 800" to 1050°C. These authors carefully examined metallographically Ni-A1 couples after 340 hr annealing at 600°C. Besides the (3 and y phases they found very thin layers of the 6 and E phases. ~n~erman~ and Castleman and Froot4 observed a much more rapid growth of the 5 and E phases at 600°C in Ni-A1 couples in case a crack was present at the /3-A1 interface. Numerous layer thickness measurements carried out by Castleman and Seigle on the y phase prove that the layer growth of this phase obeys the parabolic law after a certain transient period. From this they concluded that the layer growth of the y phase is controlled by volume diffusion. The growth of the 13, 6, and E phases appeared to be volume-diffusion-controlled also. The authors estimated that at 600°C and at atmospheric pressure Dp was 1.8 x lo-"ll sq cm per sec, D, 9.1 x 10" ™ sq cm per sec, Qp 27 kcal per mole, and Qy 31 kcal per mole. The present work was carried out to obtain more quantitative data about the kinetics of growth of the phases of the Ni-A1 system and the reactions that occur during the formation of these phases. Because in this system the diffusion process results in the formation of several distinct intermetallic compounds, the current term reaction diffusion is used in the title of this paper. In order to obtain layers of the fl phase compound of uniform thickness, a new technique for preparing diffusion couples was developed. The kinetics of growth of the y phase in 6-Al, E-Al, and Ni-A1 diffusion couples was studied at different temperatures. The kinetics of growth of the 6, c, and ( phases in Ni-y, Ni-6, and Ni-c diffusion couples was also studied at different temperatures. The calculation of the diffusion coefficients Dp and Dy by Castleman and Seigle are critically considered in this paper; by means of a revised method of calculation more reliable val-ues of , and Dg were found. These values are in good agreement with the values of the diffusion coefficients obtained by the method of Boltzmann-Matano. From the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficients the heats of activation for diffusion were calculated by means of an Arrhenius-type equation. The investigation of the Kirkendall effect has been used to obtain information about the ratio of the intrinsic diffusion coefficients of the separate atoms5 and the mechanism of diffusion. Moreover porosity as a result of a distinct Kirkendall effect would be of practical importance in connection with the bonding of diffusion coatings. The analyses of the diffusion couples were carried out by metallographic methods. The values of the concentrations at the phase boundaries and the concentration profile in each of the phases, which are needed for the calculation of diffusion coefficients, were obtained by electron-pro be X-ray microanalysis. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Materials for Diffusion Couples. The intermetallic compounds 6 (50 at. pct Ni) and E (74 at. pct Ni) were prepared from the pure metals by high-frequency induction melting in argon atmosphere. Use was made of aluminum wire (99.99 wt pct Al) and nickel sheet (99.95 wt pct Ni). The 6 and E phase melts and the nickel shiet (thickness 0.1 and 0.5 mm) used for preparing diffusion couples were annealed for 64 hr at 1200°~ for homogenization and grain coarsening (final crystal size 1 to 3 mm). composition and homogeneity of the intermetallic compounds were checked by mi-crohardness measurements and X-ray diffraction. The capacity to break the rock into adequate size fragments and in a cost-effective way is one of the main challenges in large open pit copper mines in Chile. That capacity is often compromised by the accuracy of geological estimations and the resources allocated by the mine site to update those models, making the blasting design highly dependent on that input and in consequence, blasting results. Given these opportunities, having an alternative method to input estimated key geological parameters allows blast designers to modify their designs and apply the appropriate energy to achieve the desired results. By using measurement-while-drilling data from boreholes and a few samples of actual, widespread, hardness measurements on site, we can deliver an updated cost-effective hardness estimation that is used as an input to improve the blasting design and its results on fragmentation. This estimation is delivered as a hardness interval – often in MPa units- related to the position of actual drilling measurements. In addition, having a sufficiently large drilling dataset allows us to predict hardness in new, undrilled areas near already measured boreholes, serving as a prior estimation available before pattern design. The use of these estimations, applied to several copper mines in Chile, allow us to more accurately determine explosive amounts and borehole drilling, which directly contributes to more productivity and efficiency in mine site operations. The results are often related to narrowing the gap for fragmentation results, even so, in some cases that will be related to direct savings in Drilling & Blasting process in a range 5-10% of the budget, due to powder factor changes.

As the first mine-to-metal zinc operation utilising atmospheric leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning, Skorpion Zinc faces unique challenges and opportunities. One of these challenges is found in the solvent extraction circuit, in which di-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is used as the organic extractant. Although D2EHPA is an excellent extractant for zinc, it suffers from the co-extraction of ferric iron, which is produced during leaching and by the corrosion of the grinding media. This situation is partially mitigated by iron precipitation in the neutralisation step prior to solvent extraction. Unfortunately, some ferric iron still reports to the solvent extraction process. This leads to a slow build up of iron in the organic phase. Chemical stripping is used to maintain the Fe concentration at an acceptable level. In this paper, the efficiency of the iron removal process is discussed.

Nesse trabalho é proposto uma investigação das propriedades eletrônicas de junções moleculares de Nanofitas ZigueZague de Grafeno (NZZG) e Phagrafeno (NZZPG) por meio da Teoria: 1- DFT/B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) para otimizar a geometria das moléculas; 2- DFT/LDA.PZ/DZP sobre a célula unitária da rede cristalina para obter as propriedades eletrônicas; 3- Teoria de Hückel Estendido/Função de Green de Não Equilíbrio (THE/FGNE) através da fórmula de Landauer-Buttiker para a região central acoplada entre 2 eletrodos. Nossos resultados exibem: (i) comportamento condutor e singularidades de Van-Hove; (ii) uma região não linear com característica de um dispositivo usual TEC para NZZG; (iii) duas regiões não lineares (RDNs) mostrando característica de um diodo túnel com 2 janelas de operação para NZZPG. Essas regiões não lineares de voltagem coincidem com os Vmin nas curvas Fowler-Nordheim (FN) e Lauritsen-Millikan (LM).

"The Kerr-Addison mine is on the northeast shore of Larder Lake in the township of McGarry, District of Timiskaming, Ontario. It lies just south of the highway leading to the town of Kirkland Lake, 25 miles to the west.The property was first staked in the summer of 1906, by a party of prospectors led by a Dr. Reddick of Ottawa. Subsequent assessment work resulted in the erection of a 20-stamp mill in 1908. Gold from this mill was used in the first gold coins to be minted in Canada. The operation did not prove successful, however, and mining was suspended. In 1914 a consider-able amount of underground development was undertaken by the Associated Goldfields Co., without success.In 1936 Kerr-Addison Gold Mines Co. carried out large-scale sampling from four adits driven into the hillside at the mine. Results were not satisfactory, but it was decided to drill one last deep diamond drill hole from surface. The hole cut a wide section of gold ore. With this encouragement, further development outlined a large tonnage of ore, and a 500-ton mill was put into production in May, 1938. In 1939, its first full year, the mine produced 54,480 ounces of gold and 2,732 ounces of silver. By 1955 the mill had been expanded to a rate of 4,549 tons daily, and in this year 427,193 ounces of gold and 23,490 ounces of silver were produced.From 1938 to the end of 1955 the total production, from 17,473,797 tons milled, has been 3,607,462.74 ounces of gold (0.2064 ounces per ton), and 182,278.56 ounces of silver, with a total value of $131,073,037."

It has long been recognised that knowledge of the conditions existing in a mine after an incident is essential in deciding whether to deploy responders as part of the incident recovery process. Applying this knowledge in a structured manner to the assessment and the acceptability of the risks likely to be faced by those teams during response activities before authorising their deployment is an onerous task incumbent upon the person controlling the incident response. The Mine Event Management System (MEMS) provides structure and coordination in the management of mine events. It assists with the skills and knowledge for incident control teams to effectively manage any emergency or non-emergency event, be it large or small. In cases where multiple organisations are involved, the MEMS promotes effective joint operations through the use of common terminology and structure to provide seamless communication between agencies at all operational levels. The SQL-based software developed by Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS) assists decision-makers to make considered options; it does not make decisions for you. When set-up, it allows the information that already exists within a mine’s Safety Health Management System that is relevant to the incident to be accessed and considered rapidly within the pressured environment of an emergency. Additionally, the incident specific questions contained within MEMS focuses the management team on gathering and assessing information relevant to the incident as it progresses. The software’s event log can be utilised as an auditable document for post incident investigation. The MEMS provides a process to properly consider the adequacy of the information available upon which decisions have to be made, to consider and acknowledge the hazards of the environments within or adjacent to which responders will need to work and to acknowledge and authorise the entry of responders into or to remain within a mine either during or post an incident occurring, once an acceptable level of risk is achieved.

Experiments were carried out aiming to study the influence of micro-abrasive wear test variables and plasma treatment parameters, on the tribological characteristics of low-temperature plasma carburized AISI 420 steel. The first part of this study was conducted in order to evaluate the influence of abrasive particle size, normal load and counter body rotation speed on carburized sample wear behavior; and the second part was conducted in order to evaluate the treatment temperature and time effect on carburized samples wear behavior. Plasma carburizing treatments were performed at 8 and 12 h, for temperatures ranging from 350 to 500°C; and at constant temperatures of 400°C for times between 12 to 48h, and for 450°C for times of 4 to 16h. Micro-abrasive wear test were performed by mean of a calowear ball-cratering equipment using a polished ball of AISI 52100 steel rotating at 80, 120 and 160 rpm, for sliding distances from 2.6 to 104.2 m. Alumina abrasive particles with sizes of 0.05, 0.3 and 1.0 ?m were employed. The normal loads applied on this study were 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 N. Carburized sample was characterized by mean of OM, XRD and hardness measurements. Worn crater characteristics were evaluated by confocal laser microscopy. Results showed that the transient wear regime prevails along the outer layer length (composed by Fe3C and ?’C), and the steady-state wear stabilizes in the diffusion layer region (composed by ?’C). It was verified that the wear rate and wear coefficient decreases with treatment temperature in the range of 350–450°C and increase for 500°C. It was also verified that the wear rate and wear coefficient decreases with treatment time in the range of 12–36 h (for 400°C cycle) and 4–12 h (for 450°C cycle), and increase for larger treatment times due the chromium carbide precipitation. It was also found that the wear coefficient increases with the increase of abrasive particle size, and decrease with the increase in counter body rotation speed and normal load. Lastly, the analysis of the worn craters indicates the occurrence of grooving and micro-rolling abrasion wear mechanisms.

O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a reação de dessulfuração, envolvidas no processo de pré-tratamento de ferro-gusa. A princípio, as misturas utilizadas foram caracterizadas e estudadas através do software de termodinâmica computacional (FactSage 7.1). Em seguida, os resultados obtidos através do estudo termodinâmico computacional foram comparados com aqueles obtidos mediante os testes experimentais a 1400°C. As misturas dessulfurantes tiveram como base a CaO com três tipos de fundentes, fluorita, sodalita e barrilha, além da utilização de alumínio como elemento desoxidante. Os testes experimentais permitiram identificar que a adição de 0,1% em massa de alumínio no gusa, eleva a taxa de remoção de enxofre principalmente no instantes iniciais do processo. Com a utilização da termodinâmica computacional pode-se mostrar que a reação de dessulfuração no ferro-gusa é exotérmica para os teores de silício encontrados no processo. Além disso, a termodinâmica computacional também contribui, em alguns casos, para a análise de compostos sólidos que podem se formar na escória e limitar as reações de dessulfuração.

Copper electrowinning at Duisburger Kupferhuette was introduced in March 1975. The electrowinning plant has a capacity of 10,000 mT of copper cathodes a year. The cuprous oxide feed material is an intermediate product of the treatment of the leach solutions, originating from chloridizing roasting of pyrite cinders. This material is characterized not only by a wide spectrum of accompanying impurities, but also by an unusually high level of precious metals. As the priority set was the production of high-purity cathodes. there was a need for developing a process which would be suited to treat complex leach liquors . The process adopted consist s of an oxidizing leach in spent electrolyte, followed by two- stage purification, By this means. a low- acid pregnant copper electrolyte is obtained free of elements detrimental to copper quality. Electrowinning is carried out at a current density of 200 A / m2 in the presence of 10 g/l zinc. The electrowon copper has a conductivity of at least 101.4% lACS and a softening temperature not exceeding 200°C, which makes it a suitable product for continuous casting and dip ?forming.

Rejeitos de mineração descartados na forma de polpa possuem, geralmente, grande quantidade de água e reutilizá-la no processo, por meio de operações de desaguamento mais eficientes é de grande importância para a implementação de projetos de menor impacto ambiental. O presente trabalho visa estudar as operações envolvidas no desaguamento de um rejeito de níquel, com o objetivo de principalmente a maximizar a recuperação de água de processo. Para tanto, foram avaliados: a influência da concentração de sólidos, uso e dosagem de floculante, pressão no filtro, o processo de filtração com e sem prensagem e a influência destas variáveis na umidade da torta e na recuperação de água. Os resultados mostraram que quanto maior a dosagem de floculante menor é a recuperação de água na filtragem; por outro lado, quanto maiores a concentração de sólidos e a pressão, maior a recuperação de água. Verificou-se a importância do uso da prensagem para maximizar a recuperação da água contida no sedimento, sendo possível comprovar que o rejeito de níquel floculado e filtrado com ?P de 6 bar com o uso de prensagem promoveu a recuperação de até 77% de água.

"INTRODUDTION Investigations by the Bureau of Mines have shown that the carbonizing properties of splint and bright coals may differ greatly. In a study of 55 coal columns selected from representative coals of the Appalachian region, Sprunk and coworkers 10/ compared various chemical and physical properties of splint and associated bright coals. Carbonization tests in the Fischer retort at 932°F. (500°C.) showed that, except for bright coals of high oxygen content, the coke residue from bright coal was much more swollen and cellular than that from splint. ·with one exception, agglutinating values determined by the Bureau of Mines test, were lower for splint than for associated bright coal.Because sorting of coal in quantity is tedious and time-consuming, separate types have not been carbonized by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) test, which requires 85- to 200 pound charges. However, this method has been used to determine the carbonizing properties of samples 0f bed layers that are composed largely of either splint or bright coal.4/ In these earlier tests, which were made at high temperatures on layer samples from the Elkhorn bed, Letcher County, Ky., the splint coal yielded more coke than the bright coal, and this coke was slightly stronger than that from the bright coal. The cokes from samples with large proportions of bright coal were more cellular or porous, as were the low-temperature cokes obtained from carbonization of separated samples of bright coal in the Fischer retort."
