This paper describes operations of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co. at the Chief mine in the Tintic district, Juab County, Utah, where the outstanding problem is water control; the unique pumping methods employed are featured in this report. The ore bodies in this district occur as long, narrow shoots along fault fissures, usually in the Bluebell dolomite of Ordovician age. Oxide ores predominate above the 1800 level, which is also the natural water level. Sulfide ores containing lead, zinc, silver, and gold extend below the 1800 level. The mine is developed by vertical shafts and winzes, from which drifts are driven to the ore bodies. In the lower levels of the mine these drifts extend long distances from the shafts or winzes because of the relatively low dip of the ore shoots. The mine has been worked to the 2800 level and the 18-411 winze extends to the 3080 level.

Evaluation of results obtained by the Harris method for inverse pole figures is discussed. Two existing analyses and a new approach are compared. In the most frequently used analysis, different reflections are accorded equal weight. A second method involves area-weighting of reflections, mainly to take account of nonuniformity of Pole distribution. In the new method, reflections are weighted according to their multiplicity factors. Intensity ratios obtained from a sample of steel sheet by the three methods are compared. INVERSE pole figures offer a convenient method of depicting the proportions of material with various orientations referred to a unique specimen axis. The technique was first applied to fiber textures, but it is now frequently used as a description of texture in sheet metal, the unique axis in this case usually being the sheet normal. The Harris method' for the determination of inverse pole figures has the great merit of simplicity. It suffers certain intrinsic limitations, but provided that these are borne in mind, the results allow useful conclusions to be drawn regarding the effects of texture components on certain mechanical properties. Much thought has been given to alternative methods of texture description, aimed at eliminating the ambiguity in the simpler methods.2"6 Refinements in the method of description are obtained at the price of increasing complexity, and it seems clear that a simple method, such as that of Harris, will continue to find application. The original derivation by Harris1 has been corrected by Morris7 and later by Mueller, Chernock, and Beck.2 Since the latter reference is more accessible, it is referred to more frequently than the work of Morris. Most users of the inverse pole figure method present their results on the basis of the treatment by Mueller et al., and it is the purpose of the present communication to comment on this treatment and to suggest a simple modification to the method of presentation which enhances the meaningfulness of the results. The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct the 2013 National Mining Hall of Fame class on Sept. 14, 2013. The ceremony will take place at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s five inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. The inductees are: Charles F. Barber, Donald W. Gentry, Patrick H. O?Neill, Milton H. Ward and David A. Zegeer. They will join 218 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 26th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Barber was a top executive at leading U.S. metals producer Asarco from 1956 to 1982. During his tenure, Asarco responded successfully to the demanding requirements of new environmental legislation in the United States and to changing concepts of foreign investment in mining, especially in Latin America. Gentry?s career took him from being a working mining engineer, to renowned mining educator, to president and chief executive officer of a mining company. As an educator, he had a positive impact upon hundreds, if not thousands, of new mining engineers and many others who took his short courses in mine economics. During his years in South America, O?Neill did everything from supervising operations of 15-bucket ladder gold dredges to becoming president of International Mining Corp. As an executive, he emphasized provision of education and training to local people working at mine sites for which he had responsibility. Ward?s experience covered the world and spectrum of metals, minerals and ores, ranging from A to Z (antimony to zinc and Australia to Zambia). He was president, chairman and chief executive officer of Cyprus Amax Minerals from 1992 to 1999, and he was president and chief operating officer of Freeport-McMoRan from 1983 to 1992, during which time he was instrumental in developing Freeport?s world-class Indonesian operations. Zegeer dedicated his mining career to protecting the health and safety of miners as a corporate executive, head of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and community leader. His tenure at MSHA coincided with a period of remarkable progress in U.S. mining safety .NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman Paul C. Jones said: ?The five outstanding gentlemen being honored this year as inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame are classic examples of the leadership and work ethic that has made America?s mining industry the world leader in technically sound, environmentally and socially correct, and economical mineral production that sets the standards for mining worldwide. This Bureau of Mines report describes a new type of scrubber (dust collector) and ventilation system built into the auger support frame (boom) of a Jeffrey 120L continuous mining machine. With this twin scrubber arrangement, one scrubber is mounted into each side of the boom. Each scrubber includes a 2,500-cfm fan, a flooded fibrous-bed scrubber panel, and a water droplet eliminator. The system was designed for minimum size and adds only a few inches to machine height. Exhaust duct design allows flexibility with various airflow configurations to suit both blowing and exhaust fare ventilation systems and brattice distances ranging up to 20 feet. Full-scale tests with exhaust ventilation were conducted at a Mine Safety and Health Administration surface facility at Bruceton, Pa., to determine the scrubbers' methane dilution capability. Several configurations of the twin scrubber-ventilation system produced striking improvements in face methane dilution when compared with conventional systems.

General expressions for evaluating various thermodynamic properties applicable to the van der Waals equation of state have been derived. These formulas were subsequently used to evaluate various thermodynamic functions in the two-phase region. The results indicate that, for a van der Waals fluid, there is a finite discontinuity in the second derivative of the vapor pressure curve, in the second derivative of the chemical potential or Gibbs free energy at the critical point, and in the heat capacity at constant volume measured at the critical density. Numerical values are tabulated and graphs are presented for all functions calculated.

"The purification of rare earth elements (REE) at mining operations is traditionally accomplished by multiple chemical phase-transfer processes including precipitation, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. We describe REE purification results with Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) columns that were developed to improve the speed and economy of REE purification. The SPE columns have the properties of enhanced equilibration kinetics, so that residence time of a few seconds will accomplish selective chemical transfers from solution phase to solid phase. We describe the separation of REE’s as a class from leach solutions and the further purification of REE salts. INTRODUCTIONHistorically the rare earths were first chemically separated from each other and purified by fractional crystallization. This slow, cumbersome, and laborious process was not suited to commercial production. Solvent Exchange (SX) technology was applied to the problem of separating and purifying the rare earth elements when it was determined in the late 1960s that there might be commercial uses for them individually. At the same time the very slow and expensive technique of ion exchange was applied either for ultra-purification of the desired “light” rare earths, or for the recovery and purification of the tiny amounts of higher atomic numbered, “heavy,” rare earths. Solvent Exchange (SX) has today become the standard for separating the rare earths across their atomic number spectrum. Whereas the separation of the light rare earths commercially may take 30 “cascades’ in a modern Chinese plant, the total separation of all of them from each other may take up to 80 such “cascades,” and is only even “practical’ with preconcentrated feed stocks, such as those produced in China by heap-leaching techniques performed in situ on very low grade radio-nuclide free ionic absorption clays.. Ultra-pure materials of all types are produced today by ion-exchange processing of ionic species already separated by solvent exchange.Hard rock deposits and refractory residues of tin mining and residues from uranium mining have been identified outside of China with very high ratios of dysprosium and other heavy rare earths to the majority lighter ones. The growth and influence of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. in the nickel producing industry has been quite phenomenal. Although the company's Lynn Lake deposit in Manitoba was actually dis- covered in 1941, it was not until 1945, when men and materials were more readily available as a result of the end of World War II, that the area was staked and news of the discovery leaked out. As a result of the discovery, Professor Frank Forward of the University of British Columbia was commissioned by Eldon Brown, then President and Man- aging Director of Sherritt, to develop a new nickel refining process. A pilot plant, based on the results of Professor Forward's research, was constructed in Ottawa, and after the successful testing of the Lynn Lake ore, Chemical Construction Co. was given a con- tract in 1952 for construction of a producing plant. By 1954, the Fort Saskatchewan refinery was operating at an annual production of 15 million lb of nickel metal in the form of briquetts or powder. Capacity has since been increased to 30 million lb.

Many attempts have been made during the last forty years to evaluate the performance of gravity separation equipment, that is, the effectiveness with which light and heavy particles are separated. The most comprehensive treatment of the subject was made at the 1st International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris (1950) by Cerchar. The methods suggested by the Conference were accepted and very widely used in the last 25 years. This paper discusses an improved method of evaluation in the light of the now accepted standard presentation. The float and sink analysis of the product is presented on a Gaussian distribution curve, resulting in an easier visualization of the inherent difficulties of separation. The ogives of the distribution curve are then plotted, giving a quantitative measure of the deviation from perfect separation as an error distance instead of an error area. Illustrations of the new method are given both for gravel and for coal preparation, but the concept is valid and applicable to other types of minerals which are separated by gravity methods.

Terminology. The term potash originated in "pot ashes" produced by burning wood to ashes in iron pots and then leaching out the soluble salts, chiefly potassium carbonate, from the residue. In modern usage potash is a generic term for various potassium salts used in agriculture and industry. More specifically, it denotes the oxide of potassium, K2O, and the content of potassium in ores and products is stated as weight percent of K2O present. Its salts are commonly referred to as muriate of potash, sulfate of potash, etc. The presence of an adequate supply of available potassium in the soil promotes the health and improves the quality of the plant. insures greater efficiency in photosynthesis, increases resistance to certain diseases, offsets the effect of an oversupply of nitrogen, and helps the plant to utilize soil moisture more advantageously. ("Soils and Men," U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Yearbook 1938.) Occurrence. Potassium ranks seventh among the elements in abundance. It is estimated to constitute some 2.6% of the lithosphere and is found in soluble forms in the oceans, lakes, rivers, and subsurface waters. It is also an important constituent of plant and animal life. Commercially significant accumulations of potassium salts occur in underground deposits formed in past geologic times by evaporation of ancient bodies of saltwater, inland drainage basins, and shallow sea lagoons. The potash content of such waters was the end result of weathering and leaching of insoluble potash-bearing aluminosilicates, such as feldspars, micas, leucitcs, and others. The concentrations of potassium salts in the natural brines of some lakes in the arid and semiarid regions of the continents are also important as sources of potash; the brines of the Dead Sea in Asia Minor, the Great Salt Lake in Utah, and Searles Lake in California typify such concentrations. Every continent has major potash deposits as listed in Table 1 adopted from Cawley.1

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM contract J0100018. The purpose of this work was to document the currently available noise control techniques that can be incorporated into new coal preparation plants during the design stage. This was accomplished by reviewing the related experience of the contractor and subcontractor (Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc.), conducting an extensive literature search, visiting operating coal preparation plants, and contacting various equipment manufacturers. The treatments addressed include equipment substitution, changes in plant layout, and retrofit treatments for existing equipment.

The importance of phosphate in feeding the people of the world has been recognized by mining companies as they continue their search for new ore deposits and ways of improving phosphate production. An extensive phosphate-recovery research project involving investigation of beneficiation variables by batch testing, flotation pilot-plant processing of the major portion of the ore, gravity separation of the coarse fraction, and recovery of byproduct heavy minerals of a North Carolina phosphate deposit has been completed. Data obtained through batch tests enabled the development of an economical flowsheet which proved successful for the efficient recovery of a good quality phosphate concentrate in a pilot plant.

"INTRODUCTION As part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin, the Bureau of Mines undertook a limited amount of exploratory drilling in the immediate vicinity of the New Dale Rundell mine, in the Mifflin District of Iowa County, Wisc.The work was carried out during the early part of 1945, at a time when all effort was being directed toward increasing production of metals important to the Nation's war program. Bureau of Mines engineers decided to conduct exploration at the New Dale Rundell mine after a preliminary study of available data showed a reasonable possibility of indicating an important deposit. Before the Bureau of Mines investigation, 50 holes had been drilled in the vicinity. Of this number, 18 encountered ore of minable grade. Subsequently the mine was developed and operated for a brief period; however, work was stopped before all of the ore disclosed by drilling had been mined. There appeared to be a correlation between the ore shown by the drilling in the New Dale Rundell mine and another disclosure some 1,500 feet to the northwest. The Bureau of Mines exploration was pinned to explore this possible correlation. Of the 7 holes drilled by the Bureau of Mines, 3 disclosed minable ore beyond the limits of previous drilling."

"The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively pros¬pected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941.The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program.The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.During July 1943, the coal area in the immediate vicinity of Costello Creek was geologically and topographically mapped. by Clyde Wahrhaftig and Jacob Freedman, geologists, U. S. Geological Survey. F. A. Rutledge, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines examined the property July 18 to 22, 1943, and a project of trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling was initiated on August 4, 1943. During the project Clyde Wahrhaftig remained at the Dunkle mine to interprets drill cores and assist the author in planning the explora¬tory program. The project was completed October 7, 1943.Field investigations were under the general direction of R. S. Sanford, acting chief, Alaska Branch, Mining Division. Coal analyses were made by Maurice L. Sharp, coal analyst for the Alaska Railroad.Special mention is made of the cooperation and assistance received from Clyde Wahrhaftig, geologist, U. S. Geological Survey.The many courtesies received from the owner, W. E. Dunkle, and the members of the Army Coal Procurement Section, Alaska. Department, also are acknowledged.The W. E. Dunkle coal mine is in the Broad Pass region on the south slope of the Alaska Range at an altitude of 2,800 feet (fig. 1). It is situated within the Third Judicial Division, headquarters of which is Valdez, Alaska. The area is situated approximately at latitude 63° 15' N. and longitude 149° 30' W. and is connected with the Alaska Railroad at Colorado Station by an 11-mile gravel road that is passable throughout the year. This road is maintained by the Alaska Road Commission. A private telephone line to Colorado Station connects with the telephone and telegraph service of the Alaskan Railroad.The passenger rate from Anchorage, Alaska, to Colorado station is $12.10. Freight rates are $1.60 a hundred pounds for heavy machinery and $2.66 a hundred pounds for first-class freight.The Costello Creek coal basin is in an area of low relief and has been dissected by numerous creeks flowing down the south flank of the Alaska Range. The Dunkle coal mine is on Coal Creek, a small tributary of Camp Creek, 1,000 feet from their junction. About 700 feet below this junction, Camp Creek joins Costello Creek, which in turn empties into Bull River 1/2 mile above the latter's confluence with the West Fork of the Chulitna River. The Federal Bureau of Mines has been a leader in resource recovery research since it was founded in 1910. Until the early 19601s, most of the projects were concerned primarily with the task of extending and improving conventional technology oriented to secondary metals and minerals upgrading and processing for marketable products of highest value. By the mid-1960's with the passage of the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965, all resource recovery research programs were increased in scope and intensity as an effort to solve the growing number of environmental problems and the rapid depletion of domestic energy and mineral resources. Many new materials were investigated including urban refuse, manufacturing, industrial wastes, and stockyard wastes. The objective was to promote maximum recycling as the most practical answer to problems of waste disposal, pollution control, and the short supply of minerals and energy. The new research projects ranged from the conversion of animal manure and other organics to oil, to the recovery of precious and common metals from demolished aircraft and electronic scrap. This profile includes brief descriptions of many selected research projects that typify, the total spectrum of Bureau of Mines research in the important field of resource recovery.

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has played an integral role in many large scale tunneling projects globally. Until recently, it has been regarded as a complementary monitoring tool. On the Los Angeles Metro Purple Line Phase 1, InSAR was proposed as a primary means to replace weekly and bi-weekly surface monitoring requirements on surrounding critical infrastructure. This paper will summarize the statistical analysis approach engaged in order to compare and contrast a year of historical InSAR data to known geodetic survey data, in order to utilize InSAR as an operational monitoring tool on this project.

The implementation of new technology in mining can be likened to a paradoxical situation or dilemma, where, on one hand, major mining projects are not able to solicit investor funding unless it is proven that the business cases were developed using tried and tested mining methods. On the other hand, new and innovative mining technology and mining methods need first to demonstrate and prove themselves under real production conditions over a reasonable period before they can be considered bankable feasibility studies in the mining industry. This dilemma locks new mining technology investments in a continuous cycle of underinvestment. Technological innovations are particularly relevant to the mining industry, which deals with the challenges of depleting access to resources, requiring new solutions to remain sustainable and competitive. In the last decade, the mining industry has come to realise that technological innovations can directly contribute to its sustained competitive advantage (Sanchez, Hartlieb, 2020), helping to reduce costs, lessen environmental impact, increase production, and improve mineral recovery. While understanding barriers and drivers for technology adoption is important for the success of technology implementation efforts and the sustainability of the mining sector (Muduli et al., 2013), this paper suggests strategies to exit the dilemma, proposing a preliminary framework.

The paper describing the raining operations at the Mt. Hope mine, Mt. Lope, N. J., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs of various mining operations in the United States. Mt. Hope mine produces magnetite ore. It is situated in the general northern part of the State of New Jersey. The towns of Rockaway, Wharton, and Dover lie within a radius of 4 miles from the mine. Dover is 40 miles from New York City.

The coal fields of Montana are widely distributed through the plains region in the eastern and northern parts of the State, and the mountain regions in the central, southern, and southwestern parts of the State. (See fig. 1.) SURFACE FEATURES The Fort Union region in eastern Montana is a broad plain of almost horizontal rocks, characterized by extensive "bad lands" along the larger streams and by red hills, benches, ridges, and buttes which represent shale and sandstone that have been fused by the burning of an underlying coal bed.
