This publication describes the construction of 43.64 miles of underground tunnel to be used as an aqueduct, known as the West Delaware aqueduct. In the past, the accident history of tunnel operations has not been favorable, the "rule of thumb" being a death for each mile of progress, according to the meager accident statistics available for the tunnel-driving industry. The accident experience at this project and the use of modern equipment established safety and progress records that were accepted by tunnel people as a record at the time. The city of New York comprises 5 boroughs, with a total population of approximately 8 million people, and uses about 1,210 million gallons of water each day. The water supply for the city is the responsibility of the New York City Board of Water Supply. This organization has constructed an extensive aqueduct system, the Delaware aqueduct, to convey water to the city from the distant mountain and river sources in the Catskill Mountains in the Southern Tier areas of New York State (figs. 1 and 2).

The Brattice Window Method was used to measure the leakage rates of a total of 42 ventilation stoppings in 8 hardrock mines. Various types of stopping construction were evaluated. The following types are listed in order of decreasing effectiveness: 1) Cinder block, 2) Timber and mortar, 3) Timber and polyurethane foam, and 4) Timber and brattice material. There are slight differences in the effectiveness of the first three types, while the timber and brattice type is substantially inferior to the others. The repeatability of the Brattice Window Method was found to vary with physical conditions in the mine such as stopping location with respect to intersections, regularity of drift cross section, and the presence of hardware such as air and water pipes, timber sets and wire mesh. The Brattice Window Method is viewed primarily as a tool for estimating and comparing stopping leakages for the purpose of determining where repair efforts should be concentrated. A laboratory test program resulted in the derivation of several "rules of thumb" for employing the Brattice Window Method, which will aid in securing accurate and repeatable data.

Drillability of rocks by mechanical means is closely related to the physical properties of the respective rocks, Various approaches by previous investigators on rock drillability are presented, as well as recent techniques studied by the Bureau of Mines. The studies show drillability concepts based on (1) theoretical drilling equations derived from laboratory drilling experiments extended to field drilling results and on (2) a statistical method where multiple regression analysis is used to develop a prediction equation for drillability.

Electrolytic production of metallic neodymium is carried out in fused fluoride salts containing neodymium oxide. Two major challenges pertaining to neodymium production are (a) low oxide solubility and (b) possible fluorine gas evolution. A novel iron-based reactive anode is proposed and tested to overcome fluorine gas evolution during electrolysis of neodymium oxide in molten fluoride salts.

A series of controlled experiments was conducted at four surface coal mines to study the effects of certain blast parameters upon the ground and air vibration. Preliminary scale-model blasts were conducted at a quarry to provide basic data. It was found that the amplitudes of the ground and air vibration were controlled by the maximum explosive weight per delay. Either cube root or square root scaling could be used for the seismic amplitudes, and cube root scaling could be used for the overpressure amplitudes. Both amplitudes were not significantly affected by the total charge weight per blast, the attitude of the boreholes, or the charge length or diameter. The overpressure amplitudes were affected by the charge depth, the use of cover over surface detonating cord, and the use of adequate stemming. The length of the delay intervals and the spacing of holes were important in determining the potential for reinforcement of the amplitudes in certain directions from the blasts. In downwind directions from the blast, the attenuation of the overpressure with distance decreases. Surface terrain did not significantly affect the overpressure amplitudes within the range investigated. The type of overburden affects the generation of both amplitudes and the propagation of the seismic amplitudes. Spectral analysis of the ground and air vibration is reported. A bibliography of pertinent literature is included as an appendix. A scaled distance of 300 ft/lb1/3 should produce a peak particle velocity of less than 1 ips and an overpressure of less than 128 dB linear peak. For square root scaling, a scaled distance of 75 ft/lbl/2 should limit the ground vibration to less than 1 ips.

La lixiviación con tiosulfato de amonio (ATS) puede ser considerada como una alternativa ecológica viable para lixiviar metales preciosos, por comparación con la alta toxicidad del proceso convencional de cianuración, especialmente en el caso de algunos minerales refractarios con presencia de impurezas que provocan baja recuperación de oro y altos consumos de cianuro. En este estudio se evaluó un mineral aurífero asociado a carbón para confirmar los óptimos resultados de la tecnología innovadora ATS, cuyos principales compuestos son amonio tiosulfato, sulfato de amonio, ion cúprico y metabisulfito. De acuerdo con el estudio reseñado en este artículo, la concentración cuprífera a un ratio de 0.5 Kg/Tm proporciona una óptima extracción de oro de 75.20% con 8.60 Kg/Tm de ratio de consumo de tiosulfato (escala de tratamiento: 10,000 Tm en pads de lixiviación a granulometría de 90% <2.5 pulgadas, en 45 días de lixiviación); y extracción de oro de 81.20% con 6.5 Kg/Tm de consumo de tiosulfato en mineral aurífero limpio y de características dóciles (escala de tratamiento: 20,000 Tm en pilas de lixiviación en similares tamaños granulométrico y tiempo de lixiviación). En tanques agitadores, las extracciones de oro son del orden de 90.75% en minerales refractarios (en 120 horas de lixiviación a granulometría de 80% <325 mallas), con ratio de tiosulfato de 7.4 Kg/Tm; y en minerales limpios/dóciles las extracciones de oro alcanzan 93.6% (en 120 horas de tratamiento a granulometría de 80% <325 mallas), con ratio de tiosulfato de 6.3 Kg /Tm. En cambio, la lixiviación convencional con cianuro en este tipo de minerales refractarios no supera al 10% de la recuperación metalúrgica del oro.

This paper briefly describes the principal known commercial and near commercial deposits of gold-bearing gravel end the principal placer mining operations of Idaho County, Idaho. It is one of a series of similar papers on western mining districts. The data used in writing this paper were gathered during the summer of 1937. Information concerning gold-bearing gravels was obtained from prospectors and operators, while operators supplied most of the data on mining operations. No attempt was made actually to test the gravels. The principal object of the examination was to indicate placer areas worthy of further investigation by prospective operators.

"The tests described in this paper were conducted under the sponsorship of Subcommittee VII on Pulverizing Characteristics of Coal, a subcommittee of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, American Society for Testing Materials, with a view to evaluating various laboratory procedures for testing grindability of coal in connection with commercial pulverization of coal for use as powdered fuel. The subcommittee, at a meeting in New York City on February 21, 1934, selected for test four methods that had been developed during the past few years for testing grindabilitay of coal and were being used by coal-testing laboratories in the United States and Canada. These methods are:Bureau of Mines method, Cross method, Fuel Research Laboratory method, and Hardgrove method. Subcommittee VII agreed that the grindability tests should be made on five coals selected to cover a wide range of hardness. The Pittsburgh Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, was asked to direct the investigation and to prepare representative samples of the coals. Laboratories of the fol. lowing institutions and companies agreed to cooperate by making grindability tests: Babcock & Wilcox Co., Foster Wheeler Corporation, Fuel Engineering Co., of New York, Fuel Research Laboratory of the Canada Department of Mines, and Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSHelpful suggestions in planning the investigation were made by A. 1. INTRODUCTION For Europe the Arlberg road tunnel signifies the elimination of the largest traffic barrier between Bucharest and Paris in the east-west transversal. Apart from that the tunnel will serve the feeder system to the two north-south links Ulm - Milano, and the Brenner motorway, and links the Inntal and the Rheintal motorways closer together.. Thus, the supraregional road system carrying traffic through the Tyrol and Vorarlberg will considerably be emproved by the Arlberg road tunnel. 2. THE PROJECT The 16.1 km contract section of expressway S 16 includes a ramp section of approximately 2.6 km, the access points at St.Anton and at Langen, and the main 13.98 km section of the road tunnel. This section cuts the link between St.Anton and Langen by 3.7 km, and saves 475 m in altitude. The Arlberg road tunnel is planned to have two tubes with two lanes each. In the first stage the southern tube was under construction. Its traffic capacity is 1,800 car units per hour. The tunnel has a cross section of 9o to 103 m2. The sloping gradients are by 1.3o and 1.67 per cent. Fresh air is supplied and used air removed through a ventilation system, fed at the portals and through two vertical ventilation shafts. One of them, at Maienwasen, is 222 m deep, its cross section 66.5 m2. The diameter in clear is 8.32 m. The vertical shaft Albona is 736 m deep, the diameter in clear is 7.37 m. The short process of electric furnace steelmaking with direct reduction iron (DRI) as raw material is an important process for smelting high-quality and special steels. In order to prepare high-quality DRI, the pellets with basicity of natural basicity and 0.4 were prepared from magnetite concentrate (MR=0.09, MR=0.4) and hematite concentrate (HR=0.02, HR=0.4). Based on the HYL method, the gas-based direct reduction experiments were conducted under the condition of rich hydrogen (H2/CO = 2.6). The reduction index (RI), reduction swelling (RSI), cold compressive strength (CCS), and phase changes of the pellets were systematically studied. The results show that the RI of four kinds of pellets is greater than four in the temperature range of 800~950°C. For the magnetite pellets, at a fixed reduction temperature, the RSI increases and then gradually decreases, reaching a peak between 50 per cent and 80 per cent. Moreover, the RSI enhances with the increase of the reduction temperature. In general, the RI, RSI, and reduced CCS of the MR=0.09 pellets are better than those of the MR=0.4 pellets. For the hematite pellets, the maximum RSI decreases from 23 per cent to 17 per cent during hydrogen-rich reduction, while the compressive strength increases from 500 to 1070 Nꞏpellet-1. The main reason is that the glass phase generated by the increase of basicity adheres to the surface of hematite grains, hindering the contact between reducing gas and particles. As a result, the apparent activation energy is reduced, which is not conducive to the reduction process. In addition, the glassy phase attached to the hematite reduces the migration rate of Fe2+/Fe3+, resulting in a difference in the reduction expansion rate of hematite in the inner and outer layers of the pellet. Thus, concentric cracks are formed inside the pellets, the RSI increases and reduced CCS decreases.

The basic chemical, thermal and transport principles that underlie sulfide smelting of. copper, nickel and lead are reviewed. Two basic types of modern smelting processes are distinguished?: flash-smelting, where the predominant reactions occur between oxygen-bearing gas and concentrate particles dispersed therein; and bath-smelting where the concentrate is enveloped and reacted in a turbulent bath of matte, slag and gas. The controlling heat and mass transfer phenomena are discussed, and appropriate correlations are proposed.

One of the most significant features of iron ore concentrate (pelletising feed) is the specific surface area (SSA) that affects the achievement of desirable pellet properties. There are various methods to determine this parameters and currently, the most common is the Blaine air permeability method. However, due to the simplified assumptions including spherical and identical particles and 50% bed porosity, the Blain test does not provide accurate results. In fact, these two suppositions are far from reality. In this research, comparison of SSA measurement ways are investigated, containing laser diffraction testing and Blaine air permeability, on samples with different SSA, obtained from Ball mill and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The output data showed that the calculated amounts of SSA by means of laser analysis were far greater than any other one. Furthermore, in the same results of Blaine air permeability tests on samples comminuted by different grinding methods, it was observed that the SSA figures from the laser diffraction method for HPGR products were almost 800 units greater than Ball mill ones. The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in Leadville, CO seized the opportunity to show off during its 10th anniversary induction banquet on Sept. 6. "We wanted to make people more aware of the mining hall of fame and museum," said Carl Miller, its executive director. The annual event honors inductees into the Mining Hall of Fame. This year, the inductees included Paul Wheeler Allen, Joseph Rosenblatt, Arthur Fay Taggart, Joseph Toy, Joseph Wharton and John Benjamin Zadra (ME, August, pp. 60-63). Allen, of Pasadena, CA and Rosenblatt, of Salt Lake City, are both living. Only Allen was able to attend. This year&apos;s induction banquet was the first held in Leadville, North America&apos;s highest incorporated city, at 3,094 m (10,152 ft) above sea level. The banquet gave attendees an opportunity to see the museum in its century-old 6,500-m2 (70,000-sq ft) Victorian schoolhouse. Many of the 350 guests came in 1890s dress to the black-tie affair. The evening included a cocktail reception and an open house along with a catered, prime rib dinner. During the open house, attendees had the opportunity to tour the museum&apos;s 12 rooms of exhibits and displays. Among items of interest, it was noted that a framed directory of inductees now enhances the entrance to the hall of fame. The directory is organized by the inductees&apos; names and the location of their plaques, allowing visitors to quickly find hall of fame members. Noted mining historian and author Duane Smith delivered the keynote address at the banquet. After the induction of the six honorees, attendees danced to the big-band era music of the Leadville 17-piece band BandAge. Karl Elers was the master ceremonies for the evening&apos;s program. He is a member of the hall of fame&apos;s board of directors and is chairman of Battle Mountain Gold Co. Allen was honored by the presence of 26 former colleagues and associates. He told the audience that he originally thought the museum should have been located in Denver. "But I have been proven wrong," he said. For many years, Allen was the operational executive of Cyprus Mines Corp. and a key participant in the company&apos;s growth. Allen received a replica of his mining hall of fame plaque from Thomas Falkie, chairman of the hall of fame&apos;s board of governors and president of Berwind Natural Resources Co.

The purpose of the present study was to develop and test improved Type V workvests for use on dredge operations. The goal was to design workvests that would be more comfortable to wear, would interfere less with task performance, and would better meet the needs of dredge workers. It was hypothesized that by attaining these goals, the resulting vests would be worn more often and would be kept buckled more of the time than traditional vests. The study involved three major phases. In Phase I, visits were made to dredge operations and a definition of the problem was developed. Problems with current vests were identified and working conditions and tasks surveyed In Phase II, prototype vests were developed and laboratory tests were per-formed to assess comfort and interference. In Phase III, the prototypes were modified and field tested with actual dredge operators and workers.

Comprehensive world mineral industry investment data do not exist, but limited material published on aggregates of in vestment in some elements of the world mineral industry suggest a continued up-turn in the investment level, at least in market economy countries in 1989. Steel industry investments in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries are not yet available for 1989 but, as shown in table 6, increased by 22.1% in 1988, after showing a decrease of 5.2% (revised) in 1987. The pattern of investment ups and downs varied during 1988 within country blocs and economic alliances showing no particular trends. Investment in the steel industry by the United States increased by 58.3% between 1987 and 1988 and was 1 1.9% higher than the previous highest amount invested during the 1984-88 period but was still 41.5% less than the amount invested in 1983. Investment in the steel industries of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) dropped again in 1988 from the revised amount for 1987, which became the first drop after several years of steady growth in what became the expanded ECSC in 1986. This drop in 1988 was the result of lower investments by Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Nether- lands, and Spain, investments grew or remained level in Belgium, Portugal, and the United Kingdom in 1987 and 1988. A decrease in investment in the Canadian (-26.6%) steel industry was offset by in- creases registered by the members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) of 31.7%, by Japan of 19.8% by Turkey of 22.4%, and a slight increase by the nations of Latin America. If data for the world steel industry as a whole, including those of the centrally planned economy countries, were available, the same pattern presumably would be shown as that reported; that is, it would remain fairly stable, with increases in some countries being offset by decreases in others. However, the lack of comprehensive information on the centrally planned economy countries makes it impossible to determine whether the overall trend was up or down despite recorded increases or decreases in production of the materials involved. "Tin oxide (SnU2) thin films of thicknesses in the range 100-600 nm were prepared on glass substrates by vacuum evaporation at ambient temperature. The films were characterized by transmittance measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations and energy dispersion X-ray analysis (EDAX). It is found that the films have high transmittance and non sharp absorption edges. XRD diffractograms showed that the films are amorphous and the SEM micrographs showed that the surfaces are smooth, uniform and well covered with the material. The EDAX analysis showed that the films are deficient in oxygen. Indirect optical bandgap energy and Urbach tailing in the bandgap was observed, and the width of the tail, which is related with disorder and localized states, was estimated.IntroductionTin oxide is an n-type wide bandgap semiconducting material with a direct bandgap energy of 4 eV and an indirect bandgap of 2.6 eV [1], where inherent oxygen vacancies act as an n-type dopant [2], Tin oxide thin films have been used for transparent electrodes in photoelectric conversion devices namely amorphous silicon solar cells, liquid crystal displays, gas discharge displays, etc. [3]. Perfectly amorphous thin SnO2 films show good electrical response to reducing gases in air and could, hence, be applied to construct semiconductor gas sensors where the metal oxide films function as a monograin-eqivalent active layer [4]. Amorphous SnU2 can also be used in extended gate field-effect transistors (EGFET) as a pH sensor, where the sensitive part is made of the SnO2/Al structure. This device can be used to detect and to quantify any kind of substance that can produce or consume protons, like an enzymatic reaction, therefore showing a large range of applications as biosensors [5].There are different methods to prepare SnO2 films, such as atomic layer deposition (ALD) [6], reactive magnetron sputtering [7], chemical vapor deposition [8, 9], dip coating [10], spray pyrolysis (SP) [3, 11-14], and evaporation [8], The thermal evaporation method was chosen to produce SnO2 thin films in this work because deposition by this technique does not present any compositional problems. In addition, it is a low temperature technique, which increases the probability of producing amorphous films. To increase this probability, the films were deposited at ambient temperature."

ECONOMIC utilization of all by-products has long been the goal of American industry. One of the first groups that was popularly supposed to have achieved its aim was the meat-packing industry, which reputedly found a use for everything except the squeal of the hog. To the metallurgist, slag has always been the principal wasted by-product, representing a loss not only of material, but of heat. Slag does not possess many qualities that appeal to man&apos;s imagination or suggest a romantic influence on the daily life and progress of a community or nation. It is a bulky product, and space for its disposal within reasonable hauling distance of a smelter is not always available; the iron-ore smelter especially has been wont to find space for slag disposal at a premium. Therefore, the success that has been attained in recent years in finding a use for iron blast-furnace slag is notable. It has become a vital economic factor in the construction industry in areas where it is available. Its use may suggest further possibilities of an economic outlet for the slags from nonferrous smelting as well.
