ANOTHER meeting of the Institute has passed into history and it fully sustained the reputation of the Institute as a live organization of the men, and nowadays the women, concerned with the mineral . ? industries and those working therein. The field meetings of, the 1nstitute are cine of its pleasantest and most valuable features. As Dr. Raymond used to say, ((It is good for a mining engineer once in a while to see a mine" and these meetings bring back to the mines those who, through progress into higher executive positions, have come to visit them infrequently, at the same time that they give opportunity for the .younger men to see regions and mines aside from those in which they are then working. This, and the formal and' informal interchange of information resulting,, is of the greatest professional value to all, while the meeting of old and making of new friends causes each meeting to be notable in turn. This year's meeting at Salt Lake City was one of the largest that has been held outside of. New York City; 470 members and guests registered while many more were present at the sessions without attending to this formality. '

Concentrator plants intake the ore from the mine and produce concentrates by extracting valuable minerals in a succession of process steps. Controlling the extraction process and detecting changes in the process requires updated information on a minute basis. Moreover, due to economical reasons, one must also collect metallurgical samples on a daily basis for monthly reporting.In this paper, we present how slurry samplers were installed in a Cu-Ni flotation plant to accomplish the aforementioned tasks. An on-stream elemental analyser at the plant is used for flotation process control by taking samples from selected process streams. Two process streams, the flotation feed and tail, are also equipped with metallurgical samplers. The metallurgical samplers were designed to have low head loss, be robust and easy to maintain and to collect slurry samples in a reliable way for the metallurgical accounting.Samples were collected by different sampler types and we discuss the uncertainty arising from sampling in the assays. Variographic analysis was carried out on the process data in order to find periodic components in the process, and estimate the correct number of shift sample increments and measurement error components. The metallurgical samplers were proven to be reliable devices with zero downtime and no sanding issues in the main process flows. In addition, we show that the tail measurement is the most important one for the plant recovery calculation, which emphasises the importance of the sampling accuracy in the tail stream.CITATION:Lohilahti, J, Korpela, T, Minkkinen, P and McPherson, B, 2014. The environmental problems such as vibration, and air blast are often faced, and discussed on mining, quarrying, civil constructions, shaft-tunnel, pipeline, and dam operations where blasting is inevitable. It is necessary to establish national standards towards to minimize the environmental problems induced by blasting and judicial matters in our country as it is in USA, EU countries and the other developed countries. This necessity and the obligatory of accepting the European Union criteria for Turkey that has started the procedure of joining to EU emphasize the importance of this study. In other words, the establishment of a particular national standard related with this subject is inevitable for Turkey. This will be possible only by studying, applying scientific methods and techniques by the experts.

During fiscal year 1966 the Bureau of Mines published 99 scientific and technical papers and engaged in 67 research projects on petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. A basic appropriation of $3.4 million was supplemented by $1 million in cooperative funds from other Governmental agencies and industry groups. Petroleum conservation was advanced by development of scientific knowledge and improvement of technologic methods in both the extraction and utilization of petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. Experimental work was carried out at research centers in Bartlesville, Okla., and Laramie, Wo., and in laboratories in Morgantown, W. Va., and San Francisco, Calif. ACHIEVEMENTS IN FISCAL YEAR 1966 Bureau of Mines--Petroleum Research in fiscal year 1966 (July 1, 1965- June 30, 1966) was involved in many public issues--air pollution, peaceful uses of nuclear explosives, utilization of oil-shale resources, computerization of recovery-stimulation techniques, and fuels for supersonic airplanes. Scientific contributions included compositional studies of petroleum and oil shale, determination of thermodynamic properties of petroleum compounds, development of analytical techniques, and correlations of petroleum properties with geologic occurrence. Technologic advances included rock-fracturing research, in situ combustion studies, waterflood techniques, use of radio-tracers to study stability of petroleum fuels, and hydrogenation as a tool to prepare shale-oil products.

In most oil fields, natural gas is the major source of energy causing flow of oil to the well. The amount of gas produced with the oil generally exceeds actual energy requirements, so that in time the gas reserve of the field becomes seriously depleted and the oil production must be stimulated by some auxiliary means. One of these is to repressure the oil formation with natural gas; or, where a as supply is not available, often air is used. Although air is a cheap and convenient repressuring medium, its use sometimes is attended with several disadvantages. First, the return air-gas mixture decreases rapidly in fuel value, often until it can be used no longer as a source of power. At the same time, explosive mixtures may result if recycling is used, causing hazards to life and equipment. Second, sortie fields experience considerable trouble with the formation of emulsions which become increasingly difficult to treat. Although there is no definite proof that air repressuring always causes these emulsions, many operators are convinced that this is the case. The Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., has been interested in problems connected with air-repressuring for a number of years. Some time was spent in studying the so-called "bad gas"--return mixture of low fuel value. However, it appeared impossible to attack the problem successfully from this angle, and an approach was made through a laboratory-scale study of direct oxidation of crude oil.

The purpose of this program was to demonstrate the feasibility of Illuminating various types of underground coal mining machinery as required by the Federal Coal Mine Illumination Standards Part 75.1719 to 75.1719-4 Code of Federal Regulations Title 30. Nine various machines were illuminated and the illumination systems were evaluated for a 3 month period of operation. Factors evaluated were ease of implementation, reliability, ease of maintenance, acceptance by mine workers and operators, Illumination degradation and durability.

Jetcrete Australia Pty Ltd, shotcrete contractor took the initiative in 2008 to discontinue the use of ‘road registerable’ concrete trucks for all underground works in Australia and internationally.The rationale for this decision was basic, safety. Historically these vehicles have been and still are involved in far too many accidents; this obvious trend needs to be addressed by engineering out the root cause of the problem which in this case is suitability for purpose.Road registerable concrete trucks have been widely used for the delivery of concrete in Australian mines for many years prior to and after the inception of wet shotcrete as ‘in cycle’ ground support in underground excavations around 1992. With this inception came a wide interest in the shotcrete process and an influx of new shotcrete contractors, all using road registerable concrete trucks to deliver the large volumes of Shotcrete required for these services and in turn largely increasing the use of these vehicles underground. The road registerable concrete trucks were difficult to control and each trip underground required the operators to maintain good management of the inherent risks. We virtually had no reasonable alternative for the industry and could only encourage the operators to drive with soft controls such as, reducing overall speed to a maximum of 15 km per hour when declining, regardless of the road conditions, coming to a complete halt prior to turning into any sharp corners, remaining in the same gear both inclining and declining.

Underground coal mining is the most hazardous industrial occupation in the United States.. Haulage accidents in underground coal mines contribute substantially to the occupational hazards of this type of work. In an effort to improve mine safety, a completely hydraulic transport system has been designed to move coal from the mine face to the preparation plant. The capital investment for the hydraulic haulage system is great, and the size of the mine developed for this study is large. Mine production for the conventional haulage mine is 1. 1 million tons of clean coal per year, while the hydraulic haulage mine will produce over 1.6 million tons of clean coal per year. Safety statistics for a number of mines of this size are shown.

A custom-designed shotcrete system, consisting of an 8-m3 (10-cu-yd) transit mixer and a shotcrete spray boon carrier, is used by a two-man crew to transport and place up to 25 m3 (32 cu-yd) of steel fiber reinforced, dry, silica fume shotcrete per 11-hour shift. Shotcrete is custom blended by a local supplier and delivered predampened. Mix design and quality control are performed with a computer program that develops and graphs a properly balanced mix based upon the materials sieve analyses.

1. INTRODUCTION. AT the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper Smelting,)' in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, fee. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu2S, 90.4, and Fee, 9.6 per cent (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and Fee, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples, gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that 5 of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the series ferrous sulphide cuprous sulphide, and to see how the constitution could be further, revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, "The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron Bottoms." The raw material which formed the basis of the research was a matte containing Fe, 61.68, and Cu, 11.20

The paper considers the selection of control instrumentation for a modern flotation plant, as well as the best interpretation and most effective use of the process data obtained. Process control computer availability is considered from the outset. A general philosophy of control is proposed which leads toward a system that is its own reliability monitor. The bulk of the problems are in grinding and classification. Alternative control methods are described that use particle size measuring devices. Flotation controls, based to a large extent upon on-stream X-ray analysis, are reviewed in detail. Reagent control methods are also examined. Methods to analyze the data obtained from the various measurement devices are introduced. These methods would enable an estimate of the validity of the data and require some redundant information. Another objective of these methods is the protection of operating equipment from possible control malfunctions. Although the discussion generally considers some degree of computer usage, this paper attempts to describe instrumentation and data analysis methods that enable control with or without the process control computer.

"A 10-cm thick clay-rich layer near the top of the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group is unusual in its breccia texture, alteration, and detrital mineral composition relative to the adjacent overlying and underlying sedimentary beds. This layer is composed of angular quartz grains set in an illite >> kaolinite + dickite matrix. Deformed clay-rich fragments within the layer have very similar mineral assemblages. The presence of euhedral accessory minerals including Ti-oxides and aluminophosphatesulphate minerals points to a diagenetic/hydrothermal origin. The presence of individual grains of Kfeldspar and amphibole is unusual relative to the typical Athabasca quartz arenite; originally, these minerals were probably included in detrital quartz and subsequently liberated during fracturing. The textures and alteration characteristics suggest that this layer is a hydraulically-fractured unit, which has experienced hydrothermal fluid alteration - a possible pathway distally related to uranium mineralization Une couche argileuse de 10 cm d’epaisseur pres du sommet de la Formation de Manitou Falls du Groupe d'Athabasca est remarquable par sa texture brechique, son alteration et la composition de ses mineraux detritiques qui different de ceux des couches sedimentaires sus- et sous-jacente. These circulars are: Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

As a Demand Side Management (DSM) Project, money was granted for the procurement and installation of a 3-Chamber Pipe Feeder System (3-CPFS) at AngloGold Ashanti?s Moab Khotsong Mine in the Vaal River Area, Orkney. The first submission was done to ESKOM in December 2002 and the contract was signed in September 2006 at a cost of R 57-million with an envisaged reduction in power of 7 Megawatt per month based on a 90% utilization factor. The project was finally commissioned in December 2008. The technology is not new, but the intent of the paper is to share with others the experience gained by using the technology in a deep-level mine in order to reduce overall power consumption.

Historically, extracting dissolved solids from formation water was economically motivated. Today, main drivers are environmental benefits and regulations, as large volumes of water needed for hydraulic fracturing require treatment before reuse or disposal. The concentration of dissolved solids in flowback water increases with each use and may require treatment prior to disposal. Element recovery from produced water is not profitable unless market conditions are favourable, recoverable elements are abundant, and economical recovery methods are established. Sale of recovered materials could offset recycling and disposal costs. This paper describes markets for Cl, Na, Ca, K, Sr, Mg, Br, Ba, I, B, and Li, and their concentrations in produced water from oil and gas wells in British Columbia. It recommends revising sampling protocol for produced water.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTMany bituminous coal-mine officials realize that coal dust presents an ever-present coal-mine explosion hazard, and that persons forced to breathe large quantities of it may be more subject to respiratory infection than persons working in less dusty atmospheres. As an outgrowth of the realization that coal dust should be allayed at its source, many mining companies have expressed the desire to install dust-allaying equipment, and in a number of mines, water or wetting solution is being applied on the cutter bars of mining machines, on mobile loaders, belts or conveyors underground, and tops of mine cars. Spraying equipment also has been installed on dumps to allay dust during dumping operations. Dust-allaying equipment has not been standardized, however, because manufacturers have found that many prospective purchasers of such equipment have different ideas. These manufacturers wish to standardize, so far as feasible, the types and placement of such equipment. Many mine officials, although interested, do not know the best or most effective methods for allaying dust.For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has advocated allaying dust by applying water or, more recently, water modified by a wetting agent on the cutter bar of mining machines and by applying water to loaded and empty mine cars in order to keep as much dust as possible from spilling onto the haulage roads. In recent years this Bureau has also advocated applying water with or without a wetting agent during mechanical loading of coal and during unloading of coal from trackless cars or buggies and from elevating conveyors. It has now become apparent that specific arrangement of pipes, hose, and nozzles should be standardized to at least some extent. It is the purpose of this report, therefore, to give in detail suggested arrangement of dust-allaying equipment in the hope that both manufacturers and mine officials will have available dust-allaying equipment with maximum efficiency to do the desired work."

If the total volume of a diffusion couple changes during the diffusion, the measurement of distance becomes ambiguous. Use of distance parameters as suggested by Hartley and Crank is discussed. For small concentration differences, the standard form of Fick's second law is retained with conventional length units and the in- terdiffusion coefficient D. It is shown how D can be calculated from experiments involving large concentration differences and analyzed in terms of distance parameters. 'The merits of incremental diffusion couples involving small concentration differences are emphasized. THE conventional form of Fick's second law for one-dimensional diffusion of component B in a binary solution of A and B is where c, is the concentration of component B; x, the distance; t, the time; and D, the interdiffusion coefficient which may depend on ca. Hartley and Crank' have pointed out that Eq. 1 applies only if the total volume of the diffusion couple does not change during the diffusion process; otherwise, the definition of x becomes ambiguous. No change in total volume takes place if the specific volume of the solution is a linear function of the weight fraction Wb, or if the molar volume is a linear function of the mol fraction N. In some alloys, however, these relationships do not hold, and then it is necessary to introduce a modified measure of distance, 4 in order to retain the general form of Eq. 1. The application of Hartley and Crank's suggestions to diffusion in alloys has been discussed by Wagner.' Introduction Loading and hauling systems are evaluated in open pit mining for new properties, expanding existing operations, changing systems or equipment, and equipment replacement analysis. The objective of such evaluations is to determine the equipment needed to handle planned tonnages at the lowest cash flow cost. Cash flow costs are used to combine capital outlays with operating and maintenance costs. Leasing costs could be substituted for capital costs with appropriate modifications to calculation procedures. These modifications will not be covered. This chapter will describe methods of evaluating loading and hauling systems, concentrating on some of the more often raised questions concerning quantitative data. While the methods described are not the only ones in current use, they have a record of proven reliability. The shovel and haulage truck system is used In the examples because of its common use in open pit mines. In medium to large open pit mines, electric shovels and diesel-electric drive haulage trucks are normally used. The basic ideas presented in this chapter apply to all loading and hauling systems, with appropriate modifications. The process of performing a shovel and haulage truck evaluation can be time-consuming and tedious because of the quantity of data involved, but it is not particularly difficult. The examples used to Illustrate shovel and haulage truck evaluation are based on a hypothetical open pit mine operating 350 days per year producing 31 750- 000 t (35,000,000 st, 100,000 stpd) annually, of which 11 110 000 t ( 12,250,000 st, 35,000 stpd) are ore. Selection of the optimum shovel and haulage truck fleets will be shown. The principal sources of data for the examples or any other equipment evaluation are equipment manufacturers and actual operations. Whenever possible, actual operating experience should be used to verify estimates. The quantitative data presented herein are unrelated to a specific existing mining operation.
