In this National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigation, numerical modeling is used to evaluate the degree the pillar strength is increased with a rectangular pillar over a square pillar. Three-dimensional models are developed with pillar sizes and geometries typical of underground limestone mines in the United States. Physical properties for the models are based on geotechnical surveys of nearly 30 underground limestone mines. To examine the effects of pillar length on pillar strength with the modeling, a parametric study was conducted where the pillar width was held constant while the length and height were varied resulting in width-to-height ratios ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 and width to length ratios ranging from 1 to 6. There are two aspects to pillar strength and failure. At relatively low stresses, pillars can fail as a result of geologic structure. At greater depths and sufficient extraction ratios, the pillars can also fail as a result of the vertical stresses exceeding the pillar strength. The effects of increasing pillar length regarding both strength aspects are presented in this study. Equations were developed for the increase in pillar strength with both height and length based on the model results. The results from these equations were compared to those from previously developed empirical equations for rectangular pillars. For the more slender limestone pillars with a width-to-height ratio below one, there is little increase in pillar strength for length-to-width ratios above 2 and almost no increase with length for a width-to-height ratio of 0.5. Only with the more squat pillars is there a significant improvement in strength with length. The gain in pillar strength with length for the pillars is explained by the change in the ratio of the area of the pillar affected by the ends to the area of the pillar. For the squattest pillar, the change in strength is also affected by an increase in pillar confinement along the central length of the pillar as the pillar transitions from a square to a long rectangular pillar. With geologic structure, added pillar length can significantly improve the pillar strength, depending on the strike of that structure with respect to the long pillar axis.

Recognizing this fact, the Bureau has a major on-going research effort to address this problem area. Ohio has an estimated 46 billion tons of coal beneath 12,000 square miles of the eastern third of the state. Recoverable coal reserves within this vast area are estimated at 21 billion tons, 3.2 billion tons of which have been mined since 1800. Ohio is the eleventh-largest coal- producing state in the nation and ranks third nationally in coal consumption. Coal resources in Ohio lie in as many as 60 identifiable coal seams along the northwestern flank of the Appalachian coal basin. Except where interrupted by minor faults and erosional discontinuities, these rocks dip gently and uniformly to the east, simplifying the mining methods needed to extract the coal. Fourteen of Ohio's 60 coal seams are considered to be important, although only a small number of seams are currently being mined. Ohio first enacted a surface coal mining law in 1948, requiring in part a $100 per acre reclamation bond. Ohio progressively strengthened its surface mining law in 1949, 1955, 1959, 1961, 1965,1972,1975,1978, and 1981. At the time of its enactment, Ohio's 1972 mining law was one of the most stringent in the country. This law also created a state coal severance tax of four cents per ton to be used for abandoned mine land reclamation. Ohio received primacy to regulate the surface coal mining operations within the state August 16,1982. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved on the same date.

An extensive program of laboratory model tests was undertaken to study the effect of slope on p-y curves under passive loading in dry sand. The paper concerns the method developed in a series of laboratory model tests to experimentally determine p-y curves. Bending moment curves are differentiated by using curve fitting method of cubic polynomial function. The study includes effect of slope angle and relative density on bending moment and non-dimensional p-y curves. The non-dimensional p-y curves for piles on sloping ground under passive load are developed modifying API method by including a Reduction Factor (R) using the experimental results.

in underground mines to measure worker exposure to various gases such as methane, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Even in relatively small concentrations, NO2 can produce harmful side effects in underground workers. Mines using equipment powered by diesel engines, carrying out explosive blasting operations, and performing extensive arc welding and/or cutting work will have measurable quantities of NO2 released by these processes. Workers in these areas often use gas monitors to warn of excessive gas concentrations and to help them determine when to increase ventilation air that will dilute these gases, thus minimizing exposures to this gas. Portable gas monitors, used to measure NO2 levels, must be calibrated before each use. Calibration is typically performed using a small portable pressurized cylinder containing a certified gas mixture. The certified NO2 standard mixture, usually 10 ppm NO2 concentration, is diluted with either air or nitrogen gas. To determine the stability of commercially available portable gas standards, two different cylinders containing NO2 in nominal 10-ppm concentrations were examined. One cylinder was diluted in air, the other, in nitrogen. Baseline NO2 mixtures were generated using a standard liquid NO2 permeation tube operated at a constant temperature. Final dilutions of the test gas mixtures were made with air or with nitrogen using a mass flow-controlled gas dilution system. This study showed that, when a permeation-type NO2 generator is used, the electrochemical sensors in portable NO2 monitors provide identical results for gas mixtures whether they are diluted with air or with nitrogen. Two different gas monitors, one with a two-electrode sensor and one with a three-electrode sensor, were used to measure gas concentrations in the two commercially available cylinders. One month after the cylinders were delivered, the NO2-in-nitrogen cylinder, stated to contain 10 ppm NO2, measured 8.13 ppm. The NO2-in-air cylinder, also stated to hold 10 ppm NO2, measured 6.88 ppm. Therefore, before using NO2 gas cylinders to calibrate monitors, it is recommended that their concentrations be verified either by manufacturer recertification or by comparing the stated cylinder gas concentrations to a laboratory-based permeation tube-generated standard.

The authors have proposed and discussed storage of low temperature materials such as LNG, LPG and frozen food in rock caverns. In this case, as the rock mass around the caverns will receive effects of low temperature, it is necessary to consider the thermal behavior and the stability of caverns. In this study, strength and deformation characteristics obtained by the uniaxial tension test and the compression test at low temperatures were discussed. Using the results, temperature and stress distribution around caverns when LNG was stored, were analyzed. Then thermal behavior of the rock mass around caverns was discussed. En se servant des résultats, ils analysent la répartition de la température et des pressions autour des cavités, lors du stockage de GNL. Ils discutent ensuite le comportement thermique de la masse rocheuse autour des cavités.

O uso de vanádio na produção de vergalhões microligados data do início do século XX, sendo amplamente utilizado na construção civil voltada para regiões susceptíveis a abalos sísmicos. Desse modo, este trabalho visa revisar os efeitos promovidos pelo uso do vanádio na fabricação de vergalhões antissísmicos, levando em conta a utilização de dois processos distintos de laminação – Forno de reaquecimento a Gás Natural (FGN) e Laminação Direta (LD) – como forma de conferir ganhos em resistência, mantendo-se níveis satisfatórios de tenacidade. Foram realizados ensaios microestruturais e de propriedades mecânicas entre lotes provenientes dos dois processos, avaliando-se propriedades como tamanho de grão médio, limite de escoamento e limite de resistência, correlacionando-as com o efeito provocado pelo uso do vanádio, concluindo-se que seu impacto no refino de grão austenítico/ferrítico e endurecimento via precipitação de carbonitretos de vanádio é de fundamental importância para a obtenção de propriedades mecânicas satisfatórias em vergalhões antissísmicos.

Introduction The post World War II nuclear arms race and interest in nuclear power generation resulted in a significant demand for uranium in the 1950’s. This led to the development of uranium solvent extraction technology and uranium became the first metal to be recovered on a large scale by solvent extraction (SX) (1), interestingly more than 100 years after the extraction of uranium from an acid nitrate solution using diethyl ether was first reported by Peligot.(2) For a variety of reasons discussed elsewhere (3,4) there have been upheavals in the supply demand picture and price for uranium since the 1960’s. (Figure 1) The low price of uranium from the mid 1980’s until 2004 resulted in a depression of new resource exploration and mine development along with uranium mine / mill closures and decommissioning. People with skills in uranium processing could not find suitable employment and many experienced engineers and metallurgists took jobs elsewhere or retired. This resulted in a significant brain drain with respect to uranium processing technology.

Computer modeling of the blasting process can aid in gaining an understanding of the physics controlling the process. The sequence of events in a blast occur so rapidly and in such a violent environment that measurements are still difficult to obtain. Computer modeling using a program such as DMC [Taylor and Preece, 1989a, 1989b] can provide insights into the physics of the rapid and violent events associated with a blast. DMC has been used to simulate crater blasting @‘teece, 199Oc] and the blasting of Oil Shale for modified in-situ retorting [Freece, 1990a, 1990b]. This paper will address the influence that damping has on the velocity distribution in the rock mass during the rock motion phase of a blast. Since velocity distribution is a controlling factor of muck pile shape, damping also conbibutes to muck pile shape.

Giant gold deposits are considered products of crustal-scale systems. Reduced fluids stored in mid to lower crustal reservoirs were discharged into mid to upper crustal sites of deposition. Elements of the architecture include crustal-scale structures, reduced packages of rock and regional seals. Gas-rich aqueous fluids were common but non-aqueous fluids may have been significant in the deeper parts of the systems. Fluid fluxes in over pressured domains were maintained by porosity waves. Abnormal heat input from the mantle may not be required once the systems were perturbed. Fluid-mixing and hypogene enrichment were probably the most significant precipitation processes.

A new porphyry copper gold district has been discovered at Goonumbla near Parkes in central New South Wales. Endeavour 26 North is the largest deposit known to date with a possible resource of 166.4 million tonnes at 0.74% copper, 0.12g/tonne gold and 1.7g/tonne silver, using a cut-off grade 0.3% copper. Mineralisation is primarily bornite in the higher grade zones and chalcopyrite in the peripheral lower grade zones. Most of the copper, gold mineralisation is associated with potassic alteration. Two mineralised quartz monzonite porphyry intrusive stages have been identified and these are related at depth to a large monz- onite stock which may have been the source of some of the mineralisation. On the basis of detailed paragenesis studies, the potassic zone can be divided into three symmetric subzones. The low grade inner potassium feldspar subzone is confined to the later intrusive porphyry. The outer potassium feldspar subzone is the most highly mineralised alteration halo due to the focussed superimposition of two hydrothermal cycles which have overprinted intrusive and volcanic rocks. The fringing biotite potassium feldspar subzone reveals alteration minerals which are developed early in the paragenesis. Fracture controlled quartz sericite alteration with low sulphide content, fringes and, in part overprints the potassic zone. The restricted pipe-like nature of the alteration zones and related mineralisation suggests that Endeavour 26 North is repres- entative of a multiphase focussed porphyry copper gold system.

O processo de pelotização foi desenvolvido com a finalidade de aproveitar as partículas finas e ultrafinas geradas nas operações de exploração e beneficiamento do minério de ferro. Entretanto para atender as usinas de pelotização, faz-se necessário utilizar a moagem para adequar as características de granulometria e superfície específica das misturas de minérios de ferro às especificações da produção de pelotas. Porém os moinhos possuem alto consumo de energia elétrica, elevando o custo operacional do processo de pelotização. Frente ao cenário atual, foi realizado o trabalho para estudar a substituição à moagem (área úmida) por processo de multi prensagens. Além disso, foram misturados os minérios de ferro com carvão, a fim de reduzir também o custo da moagem deste insumo. O objetivo principal foi quebrar as partículas de mistura de minérios de ferro e carvão, e avaliar os resultados de superfície específica e granulometria deste produto comparando com o processo padrão (moagem e prensagem). A prensa de rolos de bancada e as análises físicas e químicas foram realizadas para o desenvolvimento do trabalho. Foi concluída a possibilidade de atingir granulometria e superfície específica através de multi prensagens, atendendo o processo de pelotamento.

The OptiPit® software program is developed based on expertise gained at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) techniques. This program has been developed to satisfy the need in the mining industry for a multi-time period schedule and cutoff grade optimization tool that handles large scale open pit and underground mining operations involving many dumps, stockpiles, complex processing options and blending requirements. The current software (or earlier development versions) has been beta tested and used on various large scale projects within Placer Dome Inc., Newmont Mining Corporation, and Phelps Dodge Corporation since 2003. Through the use of this software, these companies experienced additional value creation by optimizing mine sequences, cutoff grades, material process flows and stockpiles under complex operational and processing constraints. This paper will present simple case study results to demonstrate the power of OptiPit® when used as a cutoff grade optimization tool. Furthermore, the paper will show, by example, how significant the difference in the Net Present Value (NPV) of a given project can be, depending on whether results are obtained by way of cutoff grade optimization using OptiPit®, or by using traditional breakeven cutoff grade approach.

Measuring dynamic effects on existing structures such as dams and bridges during earthquakes or blasting is frequently done using strong motion detectors. However, a more comprehensive dynamic structural evaluation requires direct measurement of deflection, strain, and pressure changes during dynamic events. Many existing structures have vibrating wire gages already installed that can be used with modifications to the data acquisition systems to provide direct measurement of dynamic displacement, strain, and pressure. The project described in this paper provided the opportunity to demonstrate the feasibility of using vibrating wire technology to measure dynamic effects on existing structures.

This study was initiated by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to develop guidelines for determining the maximum economic recovery of resources in coal mines. The work was in response to a requirement in the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 and Federal regulations. The intent was to address the economic rainability of small, irregular reserves in existing longwall mines. In particular, there was a need to determine if room-and-pillar mining using a continuous miner (CM method) was economically sound, or whether unconventional (short or odd-shaped) longwalls could be used to recover small coal reserves economically. Small reserves, called "widgets" are left in longwall mines on one side of the mains, near outcrops and adverse geological conditions, or near any other location where reserve geometry does not lend itself to mining with a rectangular longwall panel. The work included (1) analysis of the geologic, geo-technical, and economic factors that influence the recovery of small coal reserves, (2) analysis of historic changes in supply, demand, and coal prices, (3) development of typical cost models for room-and-pillar and longwall mines, and (4) development of a practical methodology for determining maximum economic recovery. The methodology included an evaluation of the ratio of coal mined during longwall mining to that mined for development (LDR) as well as costs of maintaining coal quality depending on market conditions. A test program was conducted to evaluate use of high-strength concrete in drilled shafts (caissons). The objective of the program was to determine if internal temperatures developed during cement hydration, or other characteristics of high-strength mixes, affect in-situ strength and stiffness. This paper covers strength results. Two 10-ft (3.0-m) diameter by 40-ft (12.2-m) deep caissons were constructed using two different commercially available high-strength concretes, a "low-heat" and a "high-strength" mix. Measured 6x12-in. (150x300mm) moist cured cylinder strengths at 56 days were 13,690 psi (94 MPa) for the "low-heat" mix and 17,130 psi (118 MPa) for the "high-strength" mix. Compressive strengths and moduli of elasticity of cores taken from the caissons were compared to those of companion cylinders made during casting of the caissons and stored in a moist room. Strengths of 4x8-in. (100x200 mm) cores taken at four ages and tested between 34 and 398 days averaged 81% of strengths of 6x12-in. (150x300 mm) moist cured cylinders at corresponding ages. In-situ (core) strengths of the caissons did not appear to be measurably affected by temperature. However, the data indicate that core strengths were sensitive to level of consolidation, as reflected in entrapped air voids. Overall, the results indicate that high-strength concretes can be used in drilled shaft (caisson) foundations.
