In June, 1,334 underground construction and tunneling professionals gathered in Toronto, Ontario for the 2007 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). This biennial event, sponsored by SME, is one of the global underground construction industry?s major events. And this year?s RETC was the first one that included the new Underground Construction Association. [ ] (UCA) of SME. In addition, the conference?s exhibit attracted 125 equipment and service providers. The next Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference is set for June 14-17, 2009 at Caesar?s Palace, Las Vegas, NV.

This paper discusses the Queens Water Tunnel, No. 3, Stage 2, being driven by a new Robbins High Performance (HP) Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).The paper is divided into four sections. In the INTRODUCTION section, a short overview of the scope of the project is presented. In the GEOLOGY section, the geological condition along the tunnel drive is briefly introduced. The TBM DESIGN section discusses the various design criteria and the resulting machine specifications. The paper concludes, in the TBM OPERATION section, with a case history describing the tunneling operation from start-up to the time of the writing of this paper.

Rock socketed mini-piles are a desirable foundation alternative when design capacity is more than 40 tons and there is limited access. In this case history mini-piles were designed to support between 75 and 200 kips at 12 locations adjacent to a perimeter wall, a party wall and at cast iron column piers. Limited geotechnical information, low overhead clearance, and active building population tested the creativity of the team to get the piles installed. The key geotechnical concern during installation of the mini-piles was the presence of a glacial till layer above the bedrock surface that restricted the seating of the casing into bedrock with a track mounted drill rig. Soil loss during the advancement of the rock socket using an air hammer was excessive and increased the risk of subsidence. Over a three week period the engineer worked with the contractor to modify the design, means, methods, and materials to install piles with adequate load capacity. This paper will present the changes in design and construction methods that were required.

"Louvicourt mine began operation in 1994. It is located in northwestern Quebec, 20 km east of Val d’Or. The mine is owned by Aur Resources (30%), which operates the mine, Teck/Cominco (25%) and Novicourt (45%). By the end of 2002 there were approximately 280 employees working on the site, including contractors. Production averages 4300 tons per day, working a massive sulphide body located between 415 m and 920 m underground.Maintenance expenses represent 27% to 29% of the operating costs, and the maintenance personnel represents 34% of the total workforce (including electrical, mechanical and concentrator maintenance staff). Considering these figures, in addition to capital costs and indirect costs, such as energy (electricity, fuel, gas, etc.), it is worthwhile to pay attention to how things are done in order to protect such investment. Every task performed to help understand the impact of Louvicourt’s practices must to be seen as an investment in the reliability of its operation."

A series of in situ pull tests has been conducted to determine the holding capacity of the standard SS46 Split Set Stabilisers. The experiments have been conducted in a wide range of geological conditions ranging from bedded rock to blocky ground. The results presented in this paper indicate that cement grouted split sets bolts are likely to provide up to three times the initial bond strength per metre of embedment length provided by the ungrouted bolts. The increased load transfer capacity of the grouted bolts provides an alternative for permanent excavation support using split set stabilisers.

Solidification of Pb-Sn alloys ranging in composition from 1.2 to 56 at. pct Pb ws observed with polarized light. Lamellar structures were observed over a larger range of compositions in alloys containing excess tin than excess lead, as expected from constitutional supercooling. The occurrence of pools of supercooled liquid surrounded by lead is explained by the difficulty in nucleating tin. Cells and dendrites weve observed in tin-rich alloys. Evidence was found that the degenerate structure formed at low growth rates, the formation of faults, and abrupt changes in composition and structure can be attributed to non-steady-state growth. The apparent interface shape was observed to have deep grooves at the interphase boundaries. HUNT and Jackson have observed the shape of the interface during growth of organic eutectics. They observed the formation of lamellar faults and shape instabilities upon changes in growth rate. The lamellar structure in these organic eutectics was not restricted to the eutectic composition. Recent work by Mollard and Flemings2 indicated that Pb-Sn alloys from 12 to 26 at. pct Pb could be solidified with a lamellar or rodlike structure if a sufficiently steep temperature gradient was used at a slow growth rate. Observations of the solid liquid interface of the Pb-Sn eutectic were made by Davies3 using polarized light. Photographs were at too low a magnification to determine the interface shape, but he has concluded that tin was the leading phase. In the following experiments, solidification of a range of Pb-Sn alloys from 1.2 to 56 at. pct Pb was observed using polarized light, to determine the factors controlling stability of the lamellar structure. EXPERIMENTAL Procedure. One hundred-gram ingots of alloys prepared from 99.999 pct pure Pb and Sn were cast into graphite molds under argon. The compositions of the alloys were 1.2, 6, 12, 26, 36, 46, and 56 at. pct Pb. Two-gram pieces were melted between two cover glass slides which were squeezed into a 1-mm separation. Samples were then observed under polarized light in a hot stage shown in Fig. 1. A long working distance objective designed for viewing at 500 times was used. Photography was made difficult by the lack of illumination and contrast at these high magnifications. By using an elliptical polarization compensator, as suggested by A. Holik, the contrast and illumination could be optimized. Photographs could be taken only at slow growth rates to avoid excessive interface motion during the 15-sec exposure used. The solidification rate was varied by increasing or decreasing the power to the heater. It was found that insulation was necessary to avoid undesired growth rate fluctuations. The temperature gradient, as measured with two thermocouples 1 cm apart, was 80" ± 20°C per cm during all the experiments reported here. The advantage of this procedure is in being able to observe solidification while it is occurring. However, the observations are restricted to the glass-metal surface and may be influenced by this surface. Also, one has no knowledge of the interior of the sample, in contrast to studies of the freezing of transparent organic eutectics.' Observations. Prolonged, extensive exposure to hand-transmitted vibration could cause a series of vibration-induced disorders in the vascular, sensorineural, and musculoskeletal structures of the human hand-arm system, which have been collectively called hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).1 To assess the risk of HAVS the international standard ISO 5349-1 (2001)1 recommends using the root-mean-square (rms) acceleration of the measured vibration with a frequency weighting. While a few epidemiological studies have reported results consistent with the predictions made according to the recommendation, many other studies have reported results with large discrepancies.2 This may be partially attributed to the time-averaging effect involved in calculation of the frequency components, especially for impact type tools. Because the spectral characteristics of impact tools change dramatically with time, a time-frequency (T-F) analysis can provide better characterizations of such highly transient vibrations. The analytic wavelet transform (AWT) is an ideal T-F analysis tool because it possesses the advantages of both the Fourier transform and the wavelet transform.3 The objective of this study was to explore the application of the AWT method for characterizing the impact tool vibrations and assessing their exposure risk. Methods Five tools (two chipping hammers, two riveting hammers, and one concrete cutting saw) were used in this study. The saw vibration was measured when it was used to cut a section of road pavement during a repair. The vibrations on the other tools were measured by the procedure specified in ISO 8662-2 (1992).4 A sampling rate of 16,386 Hz was used in the measurement. The AWT and Fourier analysis were applied to these signals and to identify their characteristics. Results Figure 1 compares the T-F characteristics of the accelerations measured from the relatively steady concrete saw and a riveting hammer. The frequency weighting specified in ISO 5349-11 was applied in the calculations. The comparison clearly shows that the two tools have completely different T-F characteristics.

Environmental regulation is an ever growing cost to the mining industry. Requirements for such items as air quality modeling, hazardous waste disposal, selenium concentration in water and sagebrush planting consume more of the mining industry’s resources each year. The mining industry is willing to make the necessary financial commitments to assure that the air, land and water resources are adequately protected and restored. However, it is sometimes difficult to explain to management and stockholders why money should be spent on a specific issue when science and common sense indicate it is being wasted. Common sense and sound science should dictate how mining is regulated.

Optimization and sensitivity analysis of mineable economic volumes have been standard practise for open pits for many years now, and more recently software has become available to apply techniques for delineating mineable reserves for underground mines. In general these techniques have been applied to a single resource model to quantify mineable tonnes and grade for underground mining. However by using multiple conditionally simulated models both the risk associated with the mining parameters and the risk associated with variations in grade, tonnes and profit can be quantified. Using suitable software the mine planner can then easily and quickly define and compare alternative designs to assess and improve the robustness of and the confidence in the final design.

Since the advent of longwall mining, various methods and materials have been used during relocation to control the intrusion of the gob in the shield/panline area. (figure 1) Controlling this gob is critical to ensuring a safe, speedy, and productive longwall move. An uncontrolled gob can cause a number of problems, from increased worker exposure to entrapment of equipment to lost production. With an eye toward worker safety and increased productivity, several different methods have been developed to minimize gob intrusion. This presentation will take a look at the history and development of longwall ?screens? and ?mesh?, from chain-link fencing to high-modulus polyester geogrids. The benefits and advantages of these developments will be defined. Since 1994, longwall coal mines have used polymer geogrids during longwall recovery to control intrusion of gob material into the shield/pan line area. As described by Brandon and Collins (1996) in their paper presented at the 15th Ground Control Conference in Golden, CO., mines had used various forms of support, such as welded wire mesh, chain-link fencing, wooden cribbing, props, and steel cable to accomplish this. These methods worked, but were labor-intensive, slow, and provided varying degrees of gob stoppage. Although a few mines still use chain-ink fencing to control the gob, longwall coal mines have generally settled on polyester geogrids to control gob and roof and these mines have been instrumental in providing input in order to develop and improve these geogrids products. he trend during the past twelve years has been to incorporate stronger grids and to eliminate auxiliary reinforcements, such as steel cables and nylon or polyester webbing. A job that once required heavy steel cables, props, and fencing is now accomplished with strong, lightweight, high-modulus polyester grids. When we discuss high-modulus grids, we refer to the ratio between load and strain, as illustrated in figure 2. These grids are woven or knitted from yarns that have been pre-stressed. When these grids come under load, they pick up the load more quickly. This allows less deformation in, in this case, the mine roof. The same principle applies when these grids are used to control the ribs. With less elongation, the grids will hold rib material tighter, thereby keeping travel ways more open.

Seattle’s Elliott Bay Seawall protects the 1½ miles of downtown waterfront between South Washington and Broad streets. The seawall supports the urban waterfront and infrastructure, including the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Alaskan Way, access to historic waterfront piers, and numerous essential buried utilities. Most of the original seawall was constructed between 1916 and 1936 over soft/loose non-engineered fill, estuary, and beach deposits. The majority of the original seawall was a pile-supported timber relieving platform that extended up to 60 feet behind the face of the wall (Figure 1). With maximum spacing between the timber piles of 3 to 5 feet, a virtual forest of timber piles were driven for the original wall.

This paper will discuss the construction of 15.9 km (9.88 mi) of tunnels on a project in Chicago, Illinois. The tunnels were driven utilizing two rock and four soft ground TBMs ranging in sizes from 7.39 m (24.25 ft) in rock down to 1.95 m (77 in) in soft ground. In addition to the mining, there are 63 upper level structures and 16 dropshafts averaging 61.5 m (202 ft) deep included on this project. Many diverse mining, excavation, support and lining techniques were employed on this project.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and may I thank you for inviting me once again to address your conference. I would first like to welcome you all, especially international delegates and conference speakers. ItÆs a pleasure to be with you all and I hope that you have the time to enjoy the many beautiful sights that the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty have to offer.   Holding your conference in Waihi is particularly apt, especially bearing in mind the conference theme û 'Mining in the Community'. There can be few venues in the world that can boast a world class gold deposit of the likes of Martha Hill located right here in the centre of a rural service town. ItÆs a deposit that has a mining history active now in its third century and that to date has yielded some 7.5 million ounces of gold and 50 million ounces of silver. I doubt that when John McCombie and Robert Lee discovered gold at Martha Hill in 1878 that they had any inkling that their endeavours would be the foundation for a mine that would become such an inseparable part of the economic and social fabric of Waihi for the next 130 years.   This is now my fifth appearance at a New Zealand minerals conference, I especially value such occasions as it allows me to comment on your industryÆs performance over the past year, share my thoughts on matters affecting your industry, and also to give you some feedback from central government.

Generally, monitoring of refractory furnace linings is of interest to the metallurgical industry. The main issues are to control wear of the furnace lining and break out of molten metal. Penetration of molten metal through the lining can cause considerable damage to equipment in the vicinity of the furnace and endanger operators. Rebuilding of a furnace lining is expensive, mainly because it stops production, but also because the lining materials are expensive. Here, two methods for monitoring the lining of a smelting furnace are presented. The methods are based on monitoring of the temperature distribution in the lining, more specific monitoring an isotherm in the lining. One method is based on the assumption of unidirectional heat flow locally, reducing the problem to a set of one-dimensional heat conduction problems. The other method is based on inverse heat conduction. In this context inverse heat conduction means estimating the wear from temperature measurements using mathematical optimization techniques. The study is based on the ilmenite smelting furnace at Tinfos Titan & Iron KS. Some results from real temperature measurements and real observations from the ilmenite smelting furnaces is presented.

"The variability in flotation response within an orebody is often a significant problem to address during the design phase of a flotation circuit. In addition, for existing operating plants, the reasons for such a variability need to be clearly understood and accounted for if plant performance is to be optimized. MinnovEX Technologies, in collaboration with major mining companies, is developing methodologies and tools to address the issue of variability in ore characteristics (such as ore hardness and flotation response). The tool is used for design and scale-up of flotation circuits from lab flotation data, and for prediction of recovery and final concentrate grades throughout the mine block model for any given circuit design.INTRODUCTIOTNH: EI SSUEB EINGA DDRESSEDThis paper describes the current development of a methodology and software tool for improved flotation plant design and enhanced prediction of froth flotation performance in an operating plant. The need for this tool is attributed to two primary factors: variability of flotation response properties throughout an orebody and related difficulties with scaleup from laboratory tests. Consider these in more detail.It is well recognized that separation performance via froth flotation will vary significantly within a single mineral deposit. This has been enhanced through the wide application of SAG milling. Throughput with SAG mills is more susceptible to ore hardness changes than is the case with crushing-rod-ball circuits; it is not uncommon to see SAG mill throughput to vary by up to 100% on a regular basis, e.g. 1000 tph to 2000 tph.The implication of this on laboratory testing for prediction of metallurgical performance is as follows: it is unlikely that either the plant grind (size distribution) feeding froth flotation or the flotation residence time will be known at the time of laboratory testing for a given block of ore. Hence, the grind used for the laboratory test is not likely to be that which actually occurs once the ore is processed, and the laboratory retention time may not represent the plant conditions."

Recent advances in digital cameras and image processing allow photographers to produce excellent high-resolution action shots in low light and high contrast conditions commonly encountered underground. Digital photography is often used for construction and inspection documentation for underground structures. Designers, owners, and contractors benefit from quality photographs that document incremental progress and project milestones. Documentation photos serve as a lasting record of as-built conditions, are an important marketing tool, and help the owner build public support for expensive public works projects. When the project is complete, the only mementos that the participants will hold onto are the photographs.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the immobilization as a host for metallic pollutants (Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) by ettringite phase. Ettringite phase is produced through hydration reaction of calcium aluminate with gypsum. From the XRD patterns, it is known that the distance between spaces in 010 planes in ettringite crystal increase with an increase of ionic radius of heavy metal except Pb; no big difference is shown. For this reason, the d-value of 010 planes in ettringite crystal increased with the substitution of Cr, Cu and Zn having a big Al ironic radius. But in case of Pb, because the substitution occurred at calcium site, it does not influence to increase d-value of 010 planes.
