"PURPOSE OF REPORTThis paper presents the results of a series of tests made by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with The Ohio State University Engineering Experiment Station as part of an investigation on the use of fuel in kilns.This report is preliminary and gives only enough of the test data to illustrate results and show the reasons for the successes and failures of the method of firing investigated; fuller details will be included in the final report.PERSONNEL FOR TESTSThe investigation is conducted under supervision of P. Rice, field engineer, represented the manufacturer of the stoker.PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONThe general aim of the investigation is to develop more economical methods of using fuel in kilns and to improve the over—all efficiency of the process of firing by methods that will produce ware of better quality. One phase of this investigation is the burning of coal on an automatic stoker to gain the advantages of control, constant rate of application of heat, and ability to burn cheaper coal than can be used in the hand—fired furnaces of kilns. It a stoker in to be used it is desirable that the coot of the installation should be low, the control of operation simple, and the distribution of heat in the kiln as good or better than with hand firing. These desiderata were sought in the stoker and furnaces that were used for the tests described herein. The tests were made to determine whether it is feasible to fire a large kiln with a single stoker, whether the use of a single furnace simplifies control, and whether the admission of all the hot gam at the center of the kiln will give symmetrical distribution of heat."

Anglo American Platinum's Khomanani 2 shaft changed over from down-dip mining to breast mining in 2004. The changeover was made to ensure that production targets were met, as it was said that predevelopment for down-dip mining was not fast enough to sustain the required ore reserves; nevertheless, production performance did not increase as expected. In this study a trade-off was performed between down-dip mining and breast mining on the Merensky Reef at Khomanani 2 in order to find the most suitable method for mining the Merensky Reef. Data was gathered by means of a literature survey, underground observations, and interviews with personnel as well as data from various departments on the mine. The two mining methods were studied and then evaluated in terms of the following criteria: safety, mining rate, cost and other factors which were identified as the main drivers of the mine. A scaling system was used to rate the performance of the two mining methods. Analysis of the results shows that down-dip mining and breast mining have the same safety performance ratings. Breast mining has a better mining rate performance than down-dip mining. Breast mining was found to be costly in comparison with down-dip mining, which has a good cost performance rating. The overall ratings of the two mining methods are very similar, with down-dip mining achieving a rating of 76 and breast mining 75.5 out of an optimum 102. Khomanani 2 currently practices breast mining, and with such a slight difference in performance rating between the two methods, it will not be worth changing over to down-dip mining as production is likely to be adversely affected during the changeover. Down-dip mining does, however, have potential for improvement in its performance rating. Further studies focusing on the improvement of the mining rate performance for down-dip mining are needed to see if this potential can be realized. If significant improvement can be made in the performance rating for down-dip mining, a changeover to down-dip mining can be reconsidered.

The maximum net return from the sale of ores and concentrates of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc accrues to the producer when these mine products are marketed to the best advantage. Data are presented that the producer, especially the small mine operator, can use to survey available markets and make a preliminary estimate of the net return to be expected from an ore, on the basis of typical mill, smelter, and freight schedules. A review of the industry is presented by States in which recent production statistics are given, marketing facilities are discussed, and locations of principal mining districts, custom mills, and smelters are shown. Explanations of treatment processes, ore types, treatment charges, payments for metals, and deductions are given. Published rail and truck freight rates for mine products, based on marketing patterns developed over many years, are listed and explained.

This bibliography contains 3,062 different citations to technical and scientific literature about helium and alpha-particles abstracted by 13 abstract service publications during 1963. Multiple subject classification has increased the total number of entries to almost 5,000. Helium citations are listed by 23 major classifications. The number of subclassifications has been greatly increased to minimize the time required for literature search. The use of automatic data processing has been extended in compiling the bibliography.

A field method combining solvent extraction and paper partition chromatography permits a simple and rapid semiquantitative estimation of gold in siliceous, argillaceous and sulphide ores. The method will facilitate the eyaluation of prospect samples in which the gold is too fine for separation by panning.Ethyl alcohol-hydrobromic acid mixtures are suitable for chromatographic development of the gold complex, and give clear reproducible definition of the gold zone. Substitution of commercial "methylated spirits" for the ethyl alcohol gives equally good definition, improving the potential of the method for field use.A batch of six samples in the range of 0·5 to 5·0 dwt/ton can be completed in two hours. The range may be extended by simple modification to higher or lower values.INTRODUCTIONIn a chromatographic method described previously (Lever 1958, Nevill and Lever 1959), gold from a standard volume of ore clamped between -plate glass was extracted by aqua regia on to the paper. After cautious drying the chromatogram was developed by an ethyl acetate-nitric acid-water mixture and gold was identified by spraying with stannous chloride solution. Sensitivity of the method in the low range was poor. The brown line obtained in the 1-3 dw/j ton range, caused by movement of gold in the reduced form, was not considered to be a satisfactory confirmation of the presence of gold. It was felt that the method would be improved by using a more elegant extraction and applying developing conditions which would produce a well defined purple line at all gold values. This paper discusses a study that investigated different underground bulk air heat exchanger (>100 m3/s) design criteria. A literature review found that no single document exists covering all design criteria for different heat exchangers, and therefore the need was identified to generate a guideline with decision analyser steps to arrive at a technical specification. The study investigated the factors influencing heat exchanger designs (spray chambers, towers, and indirect-contact heat exchangers) and the technical requirements for each. The decision analysers can be used to generate optimized, user-friendly fit-for-purpose designs for bulk air heat exchangers (air cooler and heat rejection). The study was tested against a constructed air cooler and heat rejection unit at a copper mine1. It was concluded that the decision analysers were used successfully. This tool (decision analysers) can be used by engineers for the efficient and cost-effectively design of heat exchangers.

The gold concentration profiles which develop inside the activated carbon particles during the adsorption process were measured, so as to obtain additional direct proof of intra-particle mass transfer rate-control and to determine how individual carbon particles in a population vary in their gold uptake behaviour. The observed gold concentration profiles inside the activated carbon particles were typical of situations where an intra-particle mass transfer mechanism is rate-controlling. Gold di-cyanide penetrated the carbon particles with a wave-like front until it was uniformly distributed throughout the particle. This corresponds with the profiles predicted by the film and surface diffusion model. However, the rate with which gold di-cyanide was transported inside the individual carbon particles varied within the population of carbon particles. This variation was characterized by a lognormal distribution in surface diffusivity. Because the estimated variances of these surface diffusivity distributions were small, the dynamic adsorption behaviour of the carbons used in the present study did not deviate significantly from that predicted by a model based on film mass transfer and a single surface diffusivity. Van Deventer (1984, 1985 and 1986a) reported data that could not be adequately described by a model based on film mass transfer and a single surface diffusivity. In this study a model based on film mass transfer and a wide lognormal distribution of surface diffusivity values was applied to his data. It was shown that a population of carbon particles with a wide distribution in surface diffusivity values could offer an alternative explanation to the mechanism proposed by Van Deventer which was based on film mass transfer, with partitioning of the carbon into micro- and macropores with surface diffusion in the macropores and slow mass transfer into the micropores.

"The Bureau of Mines in Serial No. 2606,4 issued in May, 1924, gave tentative specifications for rock-dusting to prevent coal-dust explosions in mines. Subsequently, a sectional committee of the American Engineering Standards Committee was appointed to formulate recommendations for standard practice in rock-dusting coal mines. The report of this Committee which follows was approved by the American Engineering Standards Committee, December 30, 1925. Several members of the Bureau of Mines staff served on this Sectional Committee and its recommendations are essentially in harmony with those of the Tentative Specifications in Serial No. 2606.As certain explanatory details contained in that serial are not included in the recommendations formulated by the American Engineering Standards Committee, it should be considered by coal-mine managements in conjunction with the committee's report which follows:Recommended American Practice for Rock-Dusting Coal Mines to Prevent Coal-Dust Explosions 1. Block cave mining, in its broadest sense, has transitioned from an orebody/rock mass determined method of extraction, to a low-cost and high production mining method that may be applied to any large ore deposit. This inherently means that caving is now required in more complex rock mass conditions where assistive damage, through preconditioning, may be necessary. This requires comprehensive understanding of the geology, and its interwoven relationship with geotechnical parameters, and is made more challenging due to limited exposure in block cave mines. Limited mine development throughout the cave volume equates to a heavy reliance on drilling data in terms of observations, modelling of the mine geology, and collection of geotechnical data. This translates as increased uncertainty of geological and geotechnical models and has potential to impact significantly on the ability to make informed decisions in the design and operation of the cave mine.Modelling of cave propagation behaviour requires a complex, coupled system of draw of material, flow of material through the cave stocks, and propagation of the cave-back assisted by autogenic stress-related breakage of the rock mass, manifested as seismicity. The role of geological features in the process of cave propagation is not well understood and requires evaluation on a mine-specific basis, given the diversity of geological controls/settings of ore deposits and local variability of stress fields.Seismic monitoring systems can elucidate key geological features and domains, as heterogeneous seismogenic activity is observed ahead of the advancing cave-back. The observations made from analysis of seismic monitoring data may have potential to be used as a validation tool for numerical modelling of predicted cave behaviour in similar geological settings (eg next lift/panel).Understanding of the geological structure, at all scales, is critical to optimise the design and operating decisions made in a block cave operation. At present, intermediate-scale structure, anisotropy, mineralogy and model uncertainty may be neglected or under-represented despite their likely significant role in the mechanisms of cave propagation.Insights from an analysis of the Ridgeway Deeps block cave mine are discussed in this paper.CITATION:Murphy, T, Webster, A and Chitombo, G, 2016. The injection of grouting compounds into the consolidated rock surrounding underground mine workings has long been practiced for the purpose of sealing against water flows. In more recent times however, grout injection has also found application for the purpose of rock mass reinforcement. Mines in Europe,America, Australia and elsewhere now make use of significant quantities of chemical grouts in both preventative and remedial strata control work.   Despite the increasing usage of grouting for these purposes, there is limited knowledge about the effects of grout injection on the rock mass, and acceptance of the method is by no means universal. In some cases grouting has been applied with little understanding of the factors that control its effectiveness, and disappointing results have been obtained.   This paper reviews the basic concepts of how grout injection may contribute to the control of rock surrounding underground mine excavations, and highlights the factors which may serve to limit the efficacy of the method and the uncertainties that complicate the appraisal of grouting as a method of strata control.

Operations of the new copper smelter at Mount Isa commenced on the 6th February, 1953. Prior to this date a paper by R. V. Anderson (1953) outlined the smelter layout, proposed operation and expected performance.Nominally a 50-ton per day plant, output is currently at the rate of 85 long tons per day. In the first 3t years, of operation to 30th June, 1956, '71,339 tons of blister copper were produced. Operation has been stabilized' and a number of modifications to plant and operation have been made. This paper reviews the progress made to date.GENERAL LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENTThe general layout and equipment follows well-established practice as study of Figs. 1 to 4, and Appendix II will show. This diagrammatic representation of layout (Fig. 1) and flow sheet (Fig. 2) is intended for the purpose of brevity to take the place of a detailed plant description.Choice of site for the smelter was limited by the necessity for close proximity of the waste heat boilers to the powerhouse.Much excavation was necessary before foundation work commenced, but the plant is compact and further expansion is possible.CHARGE MAKE-UPRoaster charge initially comprised concentrates, purchased ores, revert materials, mine sulphide ore and barren sand. As purchased ore receipts increased and as domestic black rock oxidized ore became available, the latter two fluxes were eliminated from the charge. Fluxes at minus i-in. sizing are trucked from crushing plant or stockpile by motor lorries. Filtered mill concentrates are dropped from an overhead conveyor on to the storage patio floor adj acent to the two concentrate bins.

SOME of the more important properties of finished materials are strength, ductility, toughness, resistance to alternating and repeated stresses, etc: Of these, the property that appears to have received the least consideration, at least in this country, is toughness, which is clue, possibly, to our regarding toughness as a qualitative property or, at any rate, as one that, parallels ductility. This arises out of our greater experience with the simple carbon steels in the rolled or forged (non-heat-treated) condition which, qualitatively, are tough if ductile and are not tough if brittle. In this way we have erroneously become, accustomed to judging the toughness of a material from its behavior in the tensile or similar test. The point of view presented in the present paper is that toughness, like hardness or tensile strength, should be regarded as an independent property and of sufficient importance to require, in so far as that may be possible, quantitative determinations. If such be true, it becomes at once necessary to devise experimental means for measuring, or valuating toughness, and the notched-bar impact test (the Charpy test) is advanced as the most logical test that has so far been developed for this purpose. It is further advanced, with particular emphasis, that we have two kinds of toughness to deal with and, accordingly, they will be dealt with independently. CLASSIFICATION OF MATERIALS ACCORDING TO TOUGHNESS Toughness has been defined somewhat as follows: Tough materials are those that offer considerable resistance to permanent deformation but which, once such resistance has been overcome, may' be deformed plastically, but only by the expenditure of considerable energy. In other words; tough materials may be deformed plastically but they absorb a considerable amount of work in the process. Underhand mining with cemented mill tailings for backfill has proven to be a safe and effective alternative to conventional overhand mining for rockburst prone mines. The ability of the cemented sandfill to survive a rockburst shock wave without failing has been observed at mines in the Coeur d?Alene Mining District many times in the last twenty years. To better understand the dynamic loading of this commonly used support material the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed laboratory experiments using a split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) to quantify the maximum stress and energy absorption of cemented mill tailings from the Galena mine. Cylindrically shaped cemented backfill specimens aged 28 days were placed in the split Hopkinson pressure bar testing apparatus and a dynamic load was applied. The measured peak dynamic compressive strength of the cemented sandfill was 10.6 MPa (1540 psi) and is approximately twice the static unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 5.5 MPa (800 psi). These test data showed about 95% of the initial energy was reflected away from the backfill and only 5% of the energy was absorbed. This may help to explain why backfilled stopes could withstand seismic events up to 3.5 Richter magnitude (Ml). When a compressive rockburst wave impacts a stope a large amount of the stress and energy is reflected away. The reflected wave is a tensile wave which creates tensile cracks and spalling in the entire wall of the stope. The backfill supports the damaged wall rock and holds it in place. Some of the stress and energy of the rockburst is transmitted into the backfill and because the backfill is being dynamically loaded it has a strength that is twice its static value and absorbs a substantial amount of rockburst energy. Although mining in deep underground mines is an extremely hazardous occupation, the use of underhand mining with cemented backfill for static and dynamic ground control increases the safety of the workers.

Vaporization of a solvent into an airstream at temperatures above the flash point of the solvent is hazardous if vapor is liberated at a rate that is sufficient to produce a flammable mixture. In may operations, the formation of such a mixture is prevented by rapid diluton of the vapors with air. The minimum air requirements for the dilution process are determined by the composition of the lower limit mixture at the temperature and pressure of interest. Because limits of flammability cannot always be calculated with sufficient accuracy for a proposed operation, they .rust often be determined experimentally. The present Bureau of Mines investigation was prompted by an application in which the lower limits of flammability of a number of solvent mixtures were required over a range of temperatures at atmospheric pressure. These limits were to be used along with available solvent-vaporization-rate data to establish minimum airflow rates needed to prevent the formation of flammable mixtures in an industrial process. Lower limits of flammability were determined for a number of mixtures containing methyl ethyl ketone, tetrahydrofuran, toluene, ethyl alcohol, and ethyl acetate in dry air-at atmospheric pressure and temperatures between 16° and 200° C. The experimental values were found to be in good agreement at with those predicted by Le Chatelier's law; variations with temperature were in fair agreement with those predicted by a modified Burgess-Wheeler law.

Variations in water percolation rates through saturated cohesionless hydraulic backfill (mill tailings) have been studied in relation to the many physical aspects of the system to determine the most important factors in causing these variations. A multivariable least-squares regression analysis of 135 separate tests shows that a reliable estimate of the water percolation rate through typical hydraulic backfill can be made if the bulk density (unit weight), specific gravity, and grain-size distribution are known or can be estimated. Equations for predicting percolation rate, coefficient of permeability, and seepage velocity are developed both for the range of data analyzed and for extrapolation. The prediction equations for use within the range of data studied are quite accurate, while the ones developed for extrapolation are less accurate but still give reasonable approximations of flow rates. The equations given are valid for cohesionless materials that are free of clays and micas, exemplified by classified mill tailings. The equation developed for predicting percolation rates is as follows: 1nP20 = 11.39147 + 2.853422 1n(VR X D10) + 0.1747436 VR X Cu -178.8039 D10 X D50 + 311.7034 (DSO )3, (1) where P20 = percolation rate, inches per hour at 20° C; correction factors for other temperatures are given in the text, VR = void ratio, dimensionless, D10 = effective size (diameter in millimeters of the 10-percent-finer grain size), Cu = coefficient of uniformity (ratio of the diameter of the 60-percent-finer grain size over D10), D50 = average size (diameter in millimeters of the 50-percent-finer grain size), and In = natural logarithm (log to the base e). The prediction equation for percolation rate is rather complicated, so for practical use a nomograph that simplifies the solution of the prediction equation was developed.

In the latter part of the 1980s Outokumpu Chrome in Tornio, Finland, was in a situation when its twenty-year-old ferrochrome plant was becoming too inefficient to sustain economically sound production. The company made extensive studies on the then available processing methods to find out the best possible processing route. As a result, the whole plant was practically rebuilt and expanded. When equipment was proven in practical operation, an application for FeMn production was developed. Now as the Tornio FeCr-plant is considering expansion, the same type of exercise is to be performed with today?s challenges, which will be discussed in the paper. These challenges include increasing costs or decreasing quality of raw materials, increasing energy costs, stricter environmental regulations and demand for better working conditions. The possibilities of resolving to these challenges will be discussed in the paper. The future and continuing development with FeCr includes the better utilization of process dusts and a lower consumption of energy. By adapting the latest automation tools to better control the process, even higher efficiencies can be achieved with present technology. New processes are considered for development in the future and some possible technologies will be described.

The processing of sweated aluminum electronic scrap was investigated to develop methods for recovering the aluminum and concentrating the other metals, including copper, lead, gold, and silver, into a product that can be separated by known methods. Two molten-salt electrorefining processes were developed and tested. The first process utilized a three-layer refining cell with a BaCI2-NaF-AIF3 electrolyte, which operated at 750° to 850° C. The second process used an all-chloride electrolyte of NaCI-KCI-AICI3 at 750° to 800° C, with separate anode and cathode compartments. High-quality aluminum was recovered that averaged 99.8-percent pure in the three-layer cell and 99.6-percent pure in the compartment cell. Over 94 percent of the aluminum was recovered with cathode current efficiencies of approximately 90 percent in both methods. The copper, lead, tin, silver, gold, and other metals were concentrated threefold in an anode product. Separation of lead and part of the tin by liquation from this product seemed feasible. The anode product was smelted to prepare a 96-percent copper bullion that contained 690 ounces of silver and 65 ounces of gold per ton, with 98 percent recovery of these values.

Large deposits of manganiferous iron ores, representing several million tons of metallic manganese, occur in the United States. The Minnesota deposits of such ore are of outstanding importance because of their size, state of development, ease of mining and proximity to the Great Lakes, which permits water transportation to steel centers. In view of the fact that our steel industry requires large quantities of manganese, for which no satisfactory substitute has been found, and because our reserves of ferro-grade ore are comparatively small, the development of methods that will make our large deposits of manganiferous iron ores available as a source of ferromanganese is an important problem. Realizing the importance of this problem, some years ago the North Central Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station undertook jointly the development of methods for recovering the .manganese content of manganiferous iron ores in a form suitable for the production of ferromanganese, the 80 per cent. alloy indispensable in producing steel. Two types of manganiferous iron ores have been described in previous reports.' The brown ores are higher in iron and lower in manganese than the black ores; the black ores are more siliceous but contain less phosphorus. The utilization of the iron content of the brown ores in the production of steel appears to furnish the best basis for their treatment. The method of attack has been to work out modifications in iron and steel practice so as to recover manganese in the form of slag comparable to ferro-grade ores. The greater part of the experimental work has been conducted with a 6-ton blast furnace and a 1/2-ton basic open hearth. This paper explores the structural/physical and policy based issues that have lead to the apparent resource conflict between Forestry and Mining on the West Coast. Both industries are important to the West Coast and bear many similarities, particularly at the corporate end of the mining scale. However there are very distinct structural differences which set the scene for friction at the boundaries. Examples of how mining impacts upon forestry illustrate where some of the friction arises and provides some insight as to where some solutions are or may be found.
