THIS mine, which is the property of the S. and M. Syndicate, London, is located at Moina, in North-West Tasmania, 18 miles from Stavertorr railway station and 36 miles from Devonport. There are metalled roads from both of these places, and, althoughhilly, these are good for team or motor traffic. Mails and passengers are provided for by a tri-weekly coach service from Sheffield, a railway town, distant 23 miles. The Moina mining field is situated on a main spur between the Forth and Iris Rivers, andat an elevation ranging from about 500 ft. above sea-level at the Forth River to 2400 ft. at the All Nations mine. The elevation at the mine office of the S. and M. mine is 1900 ft. The average annual rainfall, as recorded for the past eight years, is. 68 in.This inclildes, however, a couple of years during which the rainfall was much above normal, and taken over a longer period 60 in. would be nearer the average.

This paper discusses the impacts that advances in metallurgy and process engineering have on minerals project execution. Ausenco's business is focused on integrating minerals processing technology and the delivery of cost effective processing plants that exceed client performance expectations. The metallurgical development is a small but critical part of this process. Metallurgical development and innovation outcomes need to be transformed into an engineered solution and that solution converted into an operating plant in a cost conscious and competitive environment. Including new or innovative processes in a project flow sheet increases a project's technical and commercial risk. However, it also gives the project, and/or the engineering company, a potential advantage over projects using mainline practices. Managing the balance between risk and opportunity has been a cornerstone of Ausenco's success in recent years. Some advances in "technology" that are discussed in the paper include: larger capacity equipment new flow sheet concepts simplification of process interfaces, and more effective project strategies The common theme is that having a new idea can be the easy bit, putting it into operation effectively involves numerous people, many interfaces and strong project management.

Minerals are fundamental to the U.S. economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels?mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. The estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States was 2.1 percent and the nominal GDP was about $13.8 trillion in 2007 (Table 1). The prime interest rate decreased to 7.25 percent in December from 8.25 percent at the beginning of 2007, reflecting actions taken by the Federal Reserve Board to counter financial difficulties surrounding subprime mort-gages. Delinquencies on subprime mortgages increased throughout the year, affecting not only the delinquent home owners but also financial instruments invested in mortgage-backed securities. The average contract mortgage rate for the purchase of previously occupied homes in the United States was 6.35 percent in November; a slight decrease from 6.37 percent in January but still greater than 5.34 percent reported in July 2003, the lowest rate in the past five years. With the tightening of credit, the seasonally adjusted annualized rate for new privately owned housing starts declined 27 percent from December 2006 to November 2007. This report presents recommended visibility requirements for continuous miner, shuttle car and scoop operations and details the methodology used to generate them. A task analytic approach was used to define information requirements and visual features which served as sources of information. Information requirements were prioritized and the location of visual features determined. From this analysis, visual attention locations, containing one or more important visual features, were identified. A total of 71 locations-were identified for continuous miners, 54 for shuttle-cars and 54 for scoops. A procedure was developed for assessing whether operators in existing machines could be expected to see the visual attention locations. The procedure makes use of a Human Eye Reference Measurement Instrument (HERMI) designed for this project and an outside-in photographic procedure for documenting compliance with the recommendations. A sample of continuous miners, shuttle cars, and scoops were used to test the procedure. Results are presented in the report.

The separation performance of a raw coal sample from South Africa based on the dense gas-solid fluidized bed beneficiation technique was investigated. Analysis showed that the raw coal sample distributes mainly in the -50+6 mm size range with the -1.6 g/cm3 density fraction accounting for 78.20% of the cumulative mass distribution. A flow sheet of the sequential coal beneficiation technique was introduced. The experimental and simulation results of the hydromechanical and density distribution stability indicate that the dense gas-solid fluidized bed could provide a stable separation environment with uniform density fluctuations under suitable operating conditions. With the application of this technique on the raw coal sample, the separation results show that three products, consisting of 73.25% clean coal with an ash content of 9.59%, 11.31% middlings, and 15.44% gangue were effectively separated at two different densities of 1.82 g/cm3 and 1.57 g/cm3. This study provides an effective flow sheet for achieving the high-efficiency separation performance on raw coal from arid areas. Salt slag is a waste product produced by the recycling of aluminum. In most European countries (e.g. Austria, Germany) the landfill disposal of this waste is forbidden because the slag contains soluble salts and these represent a potential source of pollution to the surface and groundwater. Additionally, consisting metal and some compounds in the salt slag can react with water and resulting from this, noxious gases are generated. The recovery of useful materials from these wastes is accordingly both environmentally necessary and economically feasible. This study describes a complete recycling-process for the salt slag, which includes a leaching-cristallization-process to obtain the oxidic residue, a pyrometallurgical-step to clear the oxidic residue and finally an extensive characterization of the achieved products. Due to the increasing price of raw materials, the utilization of the oxidic residue into commercial products has been investigated and application possibilities will be discussed.

Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. The briquettes were supplied from the· normal production of the Yallourn briquette factory and the 2t in. I-type briquette was the largest size which the plant could handle.This carbonization plant represents the intermediate stage of development between the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne and the commercial production of hard char as a metallurgical fuel. In this study, the flotation performances of ethoxycarbonyl thionocarbamate (ECTC), dialkyl thionocarbamate (DATC) and xanthate copper sulfide collectors are compared by the structure-reactivity relationship using generalized perturbation theory and density functional calculation at the B3PW91/6-31G(D) level. The electron-donating power of xanthates is strong and, therefore, xanthates can strongly react with metal cation on the surfaces of copper and iron sulfide minerals through the formation of normal covalent bonds. This explains the poor selectivity of xanthates and also the high pH levels (above 13) required for the flotation separation of copper/iron sulfide minerals. DATCs are more selective for copper sulfide flotation, particularly against gangue iron sulfides. Although less powerful than xanthates, DATCs can perform copper/iron flotation separation at lower operating pH (commonly at pH levels below 11.5). ECTCs use an ethoxycarbonyl replacing an alkyl N-substituent in DATCs. The presence of the ethoxycarbonyl group effectively changes the functional group of collector from -C(=S)NH- to -C(=S)NHC(=O)-. The strong electron-withdrawing ethoxycarbonyl group adjacent to the C=S group decreases the electron density of the sulfur atom, which improves ECTC?s selectivity against iron sulfide minerals at slightly alkaline conditions. The lowest unoccupied molecular orbit (LUMO) of ECTC, which is constituted by the pz-orbit of every atoms in the conjugate -O-C(=O)-N-C(=S)-O- group and which is pleased with accepting richly d-orbital electrons (feedback electrons) from the (t2g)6(eg)3Cu(II) or t6e4Cu(I) configuration of copper cation on the surfaces of copper sulfide minerals, resulted in the formation of dative p-bond. The iron atom, which has a (t2g)6Fe(II) or (t2ga)3(ega)2 Fe(III) configuration on the surfaces of iron sulfide minerals (Fe(III) is the predominant composition at alkaline conditions), has difficulty in offering its d-orbital electrons (feedback electrons) to ECTC?s LUMO. ECTC collectors are powerful for copper sulfide minerals and very selective against iron sulfides, which has been further confirmed by UV spectra and bench-scale and industrial-scale flotation tests.

Two integral components of the 30 CFR 48 training requirements mandated for new miners, newly employed experienced miners, and the annual refresher training of all miners are hazard recognition and prevention of accidents. In these categories, instruction shall include the recognition and avoidance of hazards present in the mine, and a review of accidents and their causes. Unlike instruction preparation for fact-based material, program development for hazard recognition places a particular challenge before safety-training specialists because they are often limited in their ability to adequately gauge the trainees' levels awareness prior to training. Further, they must also assure that the training is relevant, and it is presented in a thought-provoking manner. Computer-based instruction is particularly well suited for assisting trainers in developing hazard- recognition topics because it can be used in pre-training and post-training modes for assessment of training effectiveness, in addition to use as a presentation tool. Therefore, this paper will present a recent approach developed at Penn State to apply this technology for assessment and instruction of accident prevention through hazard recognition, with an application prepared for surface coal mines.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Tech (Engineering Metallurgy) degree This investigation relates to a multi-purpose electrolytic system. Its primary purpose is to electrowin gold from high or low concentration gold cyanide solutions and/or from gold sludge, and to convert the recovered gold into a gold (alloy) electroform or electrode at the gold mine itself. These operations are carried out sequentially and in situ in the same electrolytic cell. Electrorefining of the gold recovered may also be done in the cell. The system applies to silver as well, and may be adaptable to base and platinum group metals. It could also be used in environmental applications, to remove undesirable metals present in aqueous solution at very low concentration. The work to be discussed forms part of recently filed patent applications. Subsequent and future developments of the system are briefly outlined. A vehicle proximity warning–collision avoidance system is being developed using GPS and wireless local area networks to improve safety of off-highway trucks in open pit mines. After two-and a-half years of research, software development, and laboratory testing, field tests were carried out at operating limestone quarries and open pit mining operations to evaluate GPS accuracy and overall system effectiveness under rugged operating conditions. This article describes the progress made on this NIOSH-funded project and discusses the GPS accuracy tests and overall system tests that were carried out during the year 2001 at the Colorado School of Mines Survey Field and at the Morenci open pit copper mine in Arizona. This report reviews the regulatory environment as it pertains to tailings management and disposal from mining operations, excluding coal and placer gold operations, in the state of Alaska. It is based on the EPA's staff position on an effective program to regulate mining wastes as presented in the May, 1990 Strawman II document, The unique conditions which occur in parts of the state, including a fragile environment, high seismicity and permafrost, are identified. The special waste management practices which are necessitated by these conditions are delineated. The report provides a detailed outline of the current technologies that are suitable for designing, constructing, operating and closing a railings disposal facility to meet environmental protection objectives. Cost implications to the mining industry of potential regulatory actions, such as the degree of groundwater protection are examined.

The Greymouth Coal Project is a proposal to mine by the application of proven hydraulic, and room and pillar underground mining methods; and to process the equivalent of an average of 1.7 million tonnes per year over a forty-year period. The proposed mine site is located ten kilometres north of Greymouth, on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Of the three separate mineable seam groups, the thick Main Seam Group, which makes up 77% of the total resource, will be mined by hydraulic mining technology.   It is proposed to market and produce a high volatile bituminous type coal with low ash (6%) and sulphur (0.4%). Because the inherent ash content is low, the requirement for coal treatment will only be the use of a single cell jig circuit to control the effects of rock dilution and partings. The resulting coal product is tentatively planned to be transported by rail to the port at Lyttelton for loading on to Panamax or Post Panamax size vessels.

En ese sentido, el objetivo del texto fue determinar la respuesta de los sulfuros secundarios de cobre a la lixiviación ácida y oxidante utilizando cloruro de sodio como portador de cloruro al sistema de lixiviación. El desarrollo de las pruebas y la ejecución de las mismas, definiió el proceso de lixiviación para minerales sulfurados de Minera Pampa de Cobre.

The Bureau of Mines conducted surface tests to determine the feasibility of using liquid explosives for underground rock fracturing. The effects of configuration, confinement, length, critical layer thickness, and fracture-propping sand on detonation and explosive propagation velocity of desensitized nitroglycerin were studied, using polymethyl methacrylate and glass-plate reservoirs through lengths from 3 to 12 ft, with explosive-layer thicknesses from 0.1875 to 0.0312 in and in aluminum tubes 8 ft long with diameters from 2.000 to 0.125 in. Interval and continuous detonation velocity data were obtained. Under the test conditions detonation velocity was dependent upon explosive confinement and fracture-propping sand. The detonation velocity of a confined nitroglycerin explosion in aluminum tubes can be reduced by as much as 85 percent, when the tube contains fracture-propping sand. The shape of the reservoir, whether triangular or rectangular, has little effect on the detonation velocity or explosive propagation. The critical or minimum explosive-layer thickness between glass plates, capable of supporting propagation, was 0.0312 in. The presence of a fracture-propping sand in the sheetlike layers increased the critical explosive layer thickness to 0.0625 in. In nitroglycerin-filled and nitroglycerin-sand filled tubes, the minimum tube diameters successfully tested were 0.125 in and 0.375 in, respectively.

South Africa remains the largest global producer of gold, accounting for 11.3 per cent of total world mine production, which amounted to 2520.2 t in 2005. The benefits and disadvantages associated with hedging practices in general, and among South African gold producers is examined. The wide variety and unique nature of risks faced by the mining industries provide a strong case for hedging. Only the principles of hedging, such as selling ounces of gold in the ground at a pre-agreed price for delivery at a future date as a cost-effective mechanism for price risk management, is discussed. Progressive and cumulative increases in the volume of forward sales in the major producing countries are considered by many to be the cause of the declining gold price over the past decade. In spite of negative publicity, forward selling continued as an industry-wide practice until recently (2002) when the global hedge book contracted by 352 t; contraction amounted to 158.6 t in first quarter of 2006. The objectives and benefits of hedging include continuity and stability of cash flows, stability in price achieved, reduction of frictional costs, and creating an effective management tool. The importance of a defined hedging strategy in reducing uncertainty about the hedging objectives is essential to a successful hedging policy. Historical patterns in hedging revenues at an industry level indicate five distinct periods during which the fortunes of hedgers have fluctuated. Finally, since 2001 the rising gold price and reduced price volatility through the consolidation in the global price means that the need to stabilize revenue flows is less urgent. This has meant that hedging is becoming progressively less important for the mining industry at large.

[Adequate supplies of suitable coal and coke are prime requisites in many industries, particularly those dealing with the utilization of mineral resources, recently interest has been focused on the possibilities of using electricity produced at Bonneville and Grand Coulee, Wash., in many electrochemical and electrometallurgical processes, in which core or some form of carbon is necessary in addition, discussion has been revived on the possibility of making iron and steel by the conventional methods employed in blast and open-hearth furnaces. The subject also is important at this time because of its relationship to industrial preparedness for national defense. A supply of coke from local sources on the Pacific coast is necessary in any program of production for strategic sufficiency of certain materials. An anal trio involving tae establishment of such industries should include detailed data on available supplies of coal, the quality and properties of the coke produced, and the technologic and economic factors involved in manufacture of echo and disposal of byproducts.]

A historical background of the technique is presented in order to understand different aspects of its field application. The publication enumerates key aspects of the technique as being used in practice in South Africa and North America. The paper also presents an analysis of three case studies in order to demonstrate difficulties associated with the field application of distress blasting in hard rock mines.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines subjected the CSE SR-lOO self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to a series of laboratory treatments designed to simulate various environmental conditions in underground coal mines. The tests were designed to predict the ability of the self-rescuers to withstand those environmental stresses without causing a decrease in wearer protection. The apparatus were heated to 710 C for 48 h, cooled to -450 C for 16 h, vibrated for 9 h, and dropped 1 m on each axis. A critical concern was internal damage to an apparatus, without any obvious external signs, that would cause it to malfunction or seriously degrade its performance. Carbon dioxide (C02) levels in apparatus with combined treatments were higher than in apparatus with individual treatments and untreated apparatus. The higher levels remained within safe limits, however. None of the treatments caused venting of the small oxygen cylinder that provides starter oxygen. Some bottles were found to be empty because of manufacturing defects in the burst disks. This problem was corrected in later models. The heat treatments did make the case ends more difficult to remove and the breathing bag sticky and subsequently more difficult to unfold. An apparatus that was dropped and vibrated had a broken desiccant bag that released some of its contents which compromised the seal of the relief valve. The case was dented from the drops. As with the first-generation self-rescuers, if there is visible damage to the case of the apparatus, the apparatus should be considered to be internally damaged and must be removed from service.
