Some countries are infinitely poorer than others in mineral resources-despite the perfect equality of their political leaders ambitions. Compare the mineral poverty of Kenya and Tanganyika with the riches of Katanga Province and Northern Rhodesia. Compare Paraguay with Chile, There never has been any equality in the distribution of nature's wealth. Minerals cannot play any role at all in economic development where they don't exist, and there are bound to be differential rates of economic development where there are basic differences in the wealth of mineral resources available. Africa is my principal area of interest and I know that there is an unfortunate but widespread misconception about Africa's "vast mineral resources, "its "untapped mineral wealth." Why is it untapped? Why is it undeveloped?

"Nowadays recycling became an important rare earth elements (REE) source, which allows to reduce their demand for extraction from natural deposits. At present, the used fluorescent lamps and old type TV or computer monitors kinescopes are selectively collected and undergo processing in the system of recycling. It has been estimated, that utilization of such waste would be sufficient to cover the REE demand for the next 5-8 years. In the developed process, the luminophores were separated from the electronic and electronic waste materials, and processed by hydrometallurgical methods to obtain concentrated REE in form of oxides. INTRODUCTIONInternational Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) defines the rare earths as a set of seventeen chemical elements, specifically the fifteen lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium. They are considered the most important indicators of the developed technologies and techniques. Rare earths are used, amongst others, for the production of magnetic and superconducting materials, ceramics, lighting, catalytic converters, advanced electronics and alloys. The demand for RE continually increases, similarly to many other primary raw materials. Globalization, the growing demand for limited resources of raw materials, the policy of the countries controlling the raw material market and the economic crisis became a spur for new programs of socio-economic development of the European Union (EU), with particular regard to EU safety for commodities in intermediary as well as long-term horizons (COM 2008), COM 2011).EU countries import most of metallic and chemical raw materials important for their economy. In 2008 a detailed program named Raw Material Initiative was announced. The increase in demand for most raw materials having special importance for the development of technology, and access to of raw materials security of supply affect the future economies of the UE member states and other developed countries."

In 1979 and 1980, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the 20,500 acre Black Butte RARE II area (No. 5102) in the Los Padres National Forest (fig. 1). The work by the Bureau of Mines indicates that the potential tor mineral resources in the area is low. Samples of outcrops and stream channels contained no economic minerals. A mercury deposit near a granodiorite-sedimentary rock contact occurs 2 mi northeast of the study area, but similar deposits have not been discovered within the area. Geothermal potential exists near Tassajara Hot Springs, but no thermal springs occur in the area; nor have oil, gas, or coal resources been found.

"Coal burst represented a major hazard for some U.S. mining operations. This paper provides an historical review of the coal burst hazards, identifies the fundamental geological factors associated with these events, and discusses mechanisms that can be used to avoid their occurrences. Coal burst are not common in most underground mines. Their occurrence almost always has such dramatic consequences to a mining operation that changes in practice are required. Fundamental factors influencing coal burst events include strong strata, abnormal strata caving, elevated stresses, critical size pillars and the lack of sufficiently sized barrier pillars during extraction. These factors interact to produce excessive stress, seismic shock and loss of confinement mechanisms. Over the 90 years of dealing with these hazards, many novel prevention controls have been developed including novel mine designs and extraction sequences, most of which are site specific in their application. Without an accurate assessment of the fundamental factors that influence coal burst and knowledge of their mechanisms of occurrence, control techniques may be misapplied and risk inadequately mitigated. INTRODUCTIONCoal burst1are violent failures of ribs, roof or floor in underground mines. They are known to occur in complex ways and often under unique sets of conditions. This has made them extremely difficult to anticipate and control. Assessing coal burst risk requires engineers, managers, and safety professionals to recognize the fundamental factors responsible for these events. This helps practitioners recognize the hazard potential and understand the context in which various controls and barriers should be used. Only then can coal burst events be anticipated andappropriate mitigation techniques deployed.Over the last 90 years, a few coal burst events have been anticipated but most have eluded prediction. The authors examined the historical record (Appendix A) and determined that an inadequate understanding of the initiating geologic factors and their associated mechanisms of occurrence have contributed to the poor predictive capability. The historic record also indicates that control techniques have typically been site specific in their application."

Mining camps can be divided roughly into two types-the large, opulent settlement that blooms like the rose about a strong mine in full operation; and the puny group of adobe huts, or calamina shacks, or even canvas tents flung down in the wilderness to shelter the gay pioneers of a shining prospect or the shattered survivors of a lost hope. Of the first, I know nothing; but in the second, I have spent some of my best years, and from its curious code of morals and manners, its comic hates and its unreasoning loves, its high impatience and its engulfing kindness, I have charted the narrow .and pitted path which must be trod by the woman who would success¬fully live therein.

Digital modelling of a surface is crucial for Earth science and mining applications for many reasons. These days, high-tech digital representations are used to produce a high-fidelity topographic surface in the form of a digital terrain model (DTM). DTMs are created from 2D data-points collected by a variety of techniques such as traditional ground surveying, image processing, LiDAR, radar, and global positioning systems. At the points for which data is not available, the heights need to be interpolated or extrapolated from the points with measured elevations. There are several interpolation/extrapolation techniques available, which may be categorized based on criteria such as area size, accuracy or exactness of the surface, smoothness, continuity, and preciseness. In this paper we examine these DTM production methods and highlight their distinctive characteristics. Real data from a mine site is used, as a case study, to create DTMs using various interpolation techniques in Surfer® software. The significant variation in the resulting DTMs demonstrates that developing a DTM is not straightforward and it is important to choose the method carefully because the outcomes depend on the interpolation techniques used. In mining instances, where volume estimations are based on the produced DTM, this can have a significant impact. For our data-set, the natural neighbour interpolation method made the best predictions (R2 = 0.969, β = 0.98, P < 0.0001).

Rock reinforcement systems are used in open pit and underground mines to stabilize the rock mass in-situ and provide safe working conditions. Significant progress has been made to date in the design and implementation of rock reinforcement systems to accommodate bad rock conditions and larger excavations. However, the rationale for the design of rock reinforcement systems remains essentially the same and can be categorized into three groups, namely 1. to create a beam of competent rock in stratified formations, 2. to resist sliding motion in jointed rock, 3. to passively support the superincumbent loads in highly stressed ground. Case histories of the rock reinforcement sys¬tems that illustrate these design approaches will be presented in this paper.

A research project was carried out on a gold mine in the Vaal River region of South Africa (Witwatersrand Basin) to evaluate the effect of two particular aspects of rockbolt installation – the angle of inclination of the bolt relative to the orientation of the rock surface, and the protruding length of the bolt – on the mine’s gully support system. A keyblock analysis approach indicated that these factors do not have an adverse impact on the stability of the strike gullies. This was confirmed by extensive empirical data collected from the case study mine. While safety is the primary concern, cost saving opportunities can be realized through reconsidering historically inherited support standards that are perceived to be correct and appropriate. The research described in this paper sets forth a practical approach, that is easy to implement and repeatable, to evaluate the role of rockbolts in stoping gullies.

The Monty Copper Gold Deposit is an ultra-high grade mine in Sandfire Resource’s Doolgunna region which was completely drilled out and developed within two years of commencing mine development. During this period, a total of 986 grade control diamond drill holes were completed, assayed, and validated, 15 levels developed, and 3136 faces mapped. The aggressive schedule meant a high flow of geological data was produced, validated, and incorporated into regular geological model updates. To process this data at a rate which allowed for timely use, more robust data processing methodologies needed to be generated. A new validation system was implemented which required two levels of validation being applied to any diamond drilling update. Step one was the validation of initial physical data including survey pick-ups and logging. This was done prior to new drill data being added to the geological model. Step two was the validation of assay data which was required prior to resource estimation. The implementation of Seequent’s Leapfrog Geo modelling software also allowed for a more seamless and efficient modelling workflow. The use of the Leapfrog Geo vein systems allowed for more rapid generation of geological models which then afforded more time for stringent assessment of the mineralisation system. An example of this was the introduction of cross-shift peer reviews in which opposing rosters of geologists would rigorously evaluate the previous rosters work prior to reporting. This additional level of validation resulted in more robust geological models and the identification of new ore trends. This presentation will detail the evolution of the Monty Geological model from a simple tabular indicated resource into a complex highly refined measured resource. Themes will include how the model was produced using workflows developed and optimised to meet key deliverables.

ALTHOUGH nickel was in use in alloys long before the Christian era, the metal was not discovered until 1751, when Cronstedt recognized it in niccolite from Sweden. The Chinese apparently used a nickel alloy, known as "pahfong" thousands of years ago and Persian coins dating farther back than 200 B.C. consist of a copper-nickel alloy similar to some of those now in use in coins. The pure metal was first prepared about 1775 and the metal was refined for commercial purposes some years later. The nickel industry did not attain much prominence until the ores in New Caledonia were discovered. Exports of ore from that country began in 1875 and since that date there has been an ever-increasing world output of nickel and a great expansion in the uses of the metal except during short periods of commercial and industrial depression. Previous to 1875, for a number of years, Norway was the chief producer, although the metal was mined also in Sweden, Finland, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, China, the United States and other countries. With the dis-covery of nickel deposits in the Sudbury district, Ontario, a new factor was introduced into the nickel industry and Sudbury has since become the overwhelmingly dominant feature in the world&apos;s nickel markets. Although nickel was first discovered in Canada as early as 1848 near the north shore of Lake Huron and nickel-copper sulfides were found in 1856 by surveyors working close to the present location of the important mine at Creighton, in the Sudbury field, it was not until 188.3 that any importance was attached to this field. In that year copper sulfide attracted attention where the main line of the Canadian Pacific railroad was being projected across Canada to the Pacific coast. Mining began near this discovery in 1889 but in the meantime operations had begun in 1886 in other parts of the field and by 1890 about 100,000 tons of ore had been raised. In the Sudbury field, as in Norway and at the old Lancaster Gap mine in Pennsylvania, the ore was first mined for its copper content and difficulty in the refining of the copper led to the discovery of the important proportions of nickel in the ore. "IntroductionA brief literature search will reveal that the information available concerning rod mills and ball mills is quite extensive. This type of equipment is used to treat every element from antimony to zinc. The size and capacity of individual mills, the number of units employed, and the configuration of the equipment within a concentrator add another dimension to the possible scope of this discussion. It would be impossible to treat this volume of material with any degree of thoroughness.It is the intention in this paper to describe the simplest and generally the most typical circuit wherein a single rod mill and ball mill operate in parallel. Some of the subject matter will not be entirely applicable to every installation. However the principles should be generally relevant to most applications.Typical Circuit DescriptionFigure 1 illustrates the arrangement of the equipment associated with a rod-ball mill circuit.Ore is extracted from a fine ore storage bin (1) the capacity of which is large enough to allow .continuous mill operation independently of the mine and crushing plant production schedules. A number of feeders (2) may be employed to control the flow of ore to one or more feeder conveyor belts (3). In larger tonnage operations several such conveyors are employed at least one of which will be equipped with a variable speed control to allow adjusting of the amount of feed reporting to the rod mill. A rod mill feed conveyor (4) accepts all of the ore from these feeder belts for ultimate transfer to the rod mill. This conveyor is normally equipped with a weightometer (5) to monitor the flow rate of ore to the rod mill and ultimately to allow control of this flow. Typically these conveyor belts would be equipped with feed deficiency switches which would give a remote alarm of the fact that no ore is present on the conveyor. The conveyor belts are protected by underspeed monitors which will provide a remote alarm and automatic shutdown of the conveyor in the C'.'~nt that belt slippage occurs. Finally the belts are protected by monitors which will alarm and shut down a belt if it is not running straight in the idlers."

The contractor examined L.T. White&apos;s Patent No. 3524680 and, finding it in need of engineering refinements, proceeded with a conceptual design of a variable wall mining machine. The contractor then proceeded to assess the feasibility of the variable wall mining machine measured against the criteria specified by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The feasibility was judged from a physical aspect, a health and safety aspect, and an economic aspect. The Variable Wall Mining Machine was judged to be feasible on all three aspects provided that certain specified practices were adopted. Description The specifications and design and performance parameters of the Variable Wall Mining System as conceptualized are summarized in Tables I and II. The system consists of a side-cutting auger operating in a string of identical 12 ft. sections, along a 500 ft. retreating longwall face. In addition to the 41 identical sections, there is a special drive and discharge section at the head gate.

"Guests and Members of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute: "It gives me a great deal of pleasure to call the Fifty-Second regular meeting to order this morning. "I think that you will agree with me that we have an excellent program planned for the next three days, comprising various interesting and educational subjects by authors of prominence, which will be of keen interest to all of us in the coal industry. "The Program Committee, chairmanned by John Peperakis, has done an excellent job in securing this very splendid talent for our convention. "I would like to say a word as to the, condition of the coal industry in our part of the country as well as elsewhere. I believe we can look at it with more optimism than in the past several years, particularly in the state of Colorado, with which I am more familiar. "Annual coal production in Colorado gradually dropped from around 12 million tons during the years of World War I to as low as 8 million tons during the last war, and to less than 3 million tons in the year of 1954. We believe that it touched bottom that year, as in 1955 the state production went up again to nearly 3,400,000 tons, equivalent to an increase of 15%. As you know, the national increase in bituminous coal production for the year of 1955 was roughly 2000 over 1954. "The national increase for the first two months of 1956 over the same period of 1955 is approximately 2100. Colorado&apos;s production is running around 1000 over the comparable period of last year, and the 5 states represented by our Institute came up with a nice increase in 1955 over 1954 of 1000. "Figures on the increase so, far in 1956 for this group of states are not readily available, but I fully believe that. our industry locally, as well as nationally, is now starting out on a steady rise despite the fanfare of nuclear energy and its more glamorous competitor, solar energy. Many authorities tell us that real competition from these sources is a long way off and that the atomic energy program will consume far more coal than is displaced by nuclear power. "I do not mean to infer that we coal people are out of the woods by a long way&apos; so far as holding and regaining markets, for our coal. SECOND only to the February Annual Meeting of the Institute are the Regional and Divisional meetings held in the fall of each year. Six such gatherings are scheduled in the next the months, with something likely to interest every member of the Institute. A brief résumé of the programs follows. Regional Meeting Vancouver T HE regional meeting of the Institute will be held at Vancouver, Sept. 13 to 20, in conjunction with the annual western meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The pro gram appeared on page 350 of MINING AND METALLURGY for July and-proof of careful preparation-a month later re- quires no correction and little elaboration. On the technical side there are few changes. A new item on the Wednesday morning program is the paper, "Investigation of Residential-type Stokers," by H. F. Yancey, supervising engineer, Northwest Experiment Station. U. S. Bureau of Mines, Seattle. As to entertainment the meeting is taking on some most pleasurable aspects. Two notable excursions have been arranged.

The drive selected for any piece of machinery must adequately satisfy the application requirements both during the starting interval and at running conditions, All loading possibilities of the drive must be known and allowances made for any adverse limiting conditions such as extreme cold, or perhaps an intermittent excessive loading situation etc. In general, the drive must be selected to provide the required operating characteristics with maximum reliability and at minimum cost. Simplicity of overall design is always an advantage and care must be exercised to insure that systems incorporating unnecessary complicated parts are not indiscriminantly provided. Important non-technical considerations such as equipment avail-ability (on an overseas project) as well as standardization details also play a role in the drive selection process. Additionally, an assessment of the potential capabilities of the personnel that will have to maintain the equipment can have some influence on the final choice. Several types of prime movers are available but this article will restrict itself to the use of induction motors operating from an available alternating current power source. Many drive arrangements are possible, the most common being the direct coupled single motor arrangement. New York City&apos;s $360 million North River Water Pollution Control Project is part of New York State&apos;s plan to clean up the Hudson River. The project is to provide a sewage treatment facility capable of accomodating a peak waste water flow of 330 MGD which will in great measure eliminate the 192 MGD of raw sewage that N. Y. C. discharges into its surrounding waters. Eleven miles of intercepting sewer lines must be constructed along the west side of Manhattan Island to service approximately one-half of the island. The first contract award was for a 4134 ft. sewer tunnel with a finished inside dimension of 16&apos; x 16&apos;. This main intercepting sewer will feed a sewage treatment plant located on and adjacent to the Hudson River. The tunnel is parallel to the river and is located under 12th Avenue between 125th Street and 143rd Street. The Penn- Central Railroad tracks are above and just to one side of the tunnel location. The working tunnel diameter is 21 ft. and numerous problems of support, mining method, and ground control have been encountered. (see Dwg. 1)

"The development and commercial operation of the Falconbridge chlorine leach process have been described in papers in 1985 and 1987. Since this time, various process improvements have been implemented and the capacity of the Kristiansand refinery has been increased to 85 000 t/y Ni, 40 0000 t/y Cu and 4500 t/y Co. The focus has been on continuous improvements in productivity, the use of energy and other costs. Several environmental issues have also been eliminated or reduced since 1987. IntroductionThe first nickel refining operation in Kristiansand, Norway, started in 1910 based upon raw materials from Norwegian mines. In 1929, Falconbridge Nickel mines purchased the refinery to acquire information and the patent rights to the Hybinette refining process that was practised at the small Kristiansand refinery. Falconbridge ownership has now, for more than 70 years, provided a strong base regarding raw material supply, financial resources and technical support for further expansions and major technical improvements at the refinery.The main concepts of the new chlorine leach process were developed in the laboratories from 1966 to 1969 and the process was piloted from 1970 to 1972. The main stages in the commercial plant were started in the 1975 to 1981 period. After 1981, there have been a number of process modifications, plant expansions and improvements to operating practices. The developments up to 1988 have been described in previous publications (Stensholt et al., 1986, 1988).This paper presents an overview of the process and how it is practised at Falconbridge Nikkelverk AS (FNA) today and describes some of the main changes that have been implemented since 1988. During this time, the nickel capacity has been expanded from 54 000 t/y to 85 000 t/y and the cobalt capacity from 2000 t/y to 4500 t/y. The paper describes how these expansions were achieved together with continuous improvements in operating efficiency and also gives an overview of the main environmental concerns at the refinery."

This report summarizes research into the root causes of failures in mine power systems which impact safety and reliability. Abnormally low fault currents, due to arcing faults, self-excited systems, and fallen trolley wires are examined and quantified. The reliability of components which are critical for safety is studied, as well as reliability of components which are crucial to the mining pro cess. Failure rates are found through in-situ tests, accelerated life tests, studies of mine maintenance, and fault-tree analysis. Reliability data is used to predict fatalities and lost-time accidents through computer-aided fault-tree analysis. Analytical support tasks reported include the deriving of trailing-cable ampacities under cyclic loading, and the measurement of connected ground beds.

MY first Nevada City mining reminiscence is one of seeing Capt. Thomas Mein, over 52 years ago, in the old Wyoming mill on Deer Creek about a mile below the town of Nevada City. Captain Mein was then superintendent of the Wyoming mine, where the old fashioned Cornish pump was used, as well as hurdy-gurdy water wheels for power. This mill was one of the typical, up-to-date mills of that time and consisted of stamps, fed by Chinese hand feeders, who also cobbed the ore down to a small enough size to be fed into the mortars. Stamps at that time were of light weight and crushed about one ton to one and a half tons to the stamp, the pulp going over plates, then into sluices with self-raising gates. When a sluice became full the pulp was shut off and directed into the parallel sluice, also with a self-raising gate. The concentrate thus collected in the sluice was shoveled out and carried to Cornish buddles and there cleaned up, preparatory to being sent to a local custom chlorination works.

INTRODUCTION From its beginnings in the first decade of this century, flotation has gradually moved to a predominant role in mineral separation. There are several reasons for this, the continuing trend toward treat¬ment of lower-grade and more finely disseminated ores being the major one. Not only has this been true for sulfide ores to which the process was first applied commercially, but also for most nonsulfide ores as well. A second factor has been the broad applicability of the process with respect to particle size; it is effective from 8 to 10 mesh to below 10m. Finally, more so than for any other separation process, flotation has almost no limitations in separating minerals. Gravity, magnetic, or electrostatic processes are either applicable to particular minerals, or to a restricted number of mineral combinations. Flotation, on the other hand, can utilize the wide range of surface chemical differences among minerals, and an equally wide range of reagents. The recent availability of selective flocculation capabilities on a commercial scale as an adjunct to flotation should remove one of the limitations to the process in the very fine particle range. History Although flotation was anticipated in a 19th century patent to Haynes, its first significant industrial uses were in the early 20th century in Australia. According to Hoover,&apos; the Pottter-Del-prat pro¬cess had a "measure of success" at Broken Hill&apos;s Block 14 mine in 1905-1906, and was definitely successful at the BHP Mine, where it produced 80,000 tpy of zinc concentrates. Both the Mineral Separa¬tion and the Elmore processes had early trials in Australia also, with both successes and failures. The first application in the United States was in 1911, when the Hyde process was used by the Butte and Superior Copper Co. on a zinc ore in Montana. By 1916 Hoover could list 46 applications to copper, lead, and zinc ores, mainly in the United States. Ten years later Taggart2 listed almost a thousand patents covering processes and reagents which with few exceptions laid the foundations for modern practice. Included were: sulfidizing of oxides; leach-precip¬itation-flotation; cyanides, sulfites, sulfides, and oxidants for selective depression of sulfides; starch, tannin, and glue as depressants; and xanthates, dithiophosphates, and oleic acid as collectors. Within an¬other 20 years, all of these were in commercial use along with amines for floating silica from phosphates, and synthetic frothers were com¬peting with pine oil and cresylic acid.
