The E1 Indio Mine is located in the Andes mountains about 180 kilometers East of La Serena, capital of the Fourth Region of Chile. It is reached by an international highway running up the Elqui Valley as far as Juntas from where the last 42 kilometers is on a road constructed by the Company. The plant is located at 3.900 meters above sea level among extremely rugged terrain with nearby mountains rising about 5.500 meters. Climatic conditions at these altitudes are severe with winter temperatures down to -20°C. Snow storms lasting several days and leaving up to two meters of snow have been experienced, while fierce winds are corm=.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. A 2-in-diameter 6x25 fiber core rope was degraded on a bending fatigue machine. This was the first in a series of tests on rope of this construction and size. Baseline testing at the laboratory was reported in an earlier publication. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope to determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that as a wire rope nears the end of its useful life, deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength increase at an accelerated rate.

Dump site injuries occur in all major mineral industries. Working in elevated areas near an edge is a common hazard for operators of off-highway mobile mining equipment. In this Information Circular (IC), serious injuries involving haulage trucks working at dump sites are examined for the period 1988 to 1997. Data were acquired from injury reports gathered by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The IC is organized into three sections. The first presents an overview of the frequency and severity of injuries. The second analyzes injury characteristics using MSHA-defined data fields and author-defined injury classifications. Key findings are discussed in the third section. In summary, 370 serious injuries were identified that involved trucks at dump sites, of which 26 were fatalities. Although haulage truck activities at dump sites resulted in a small proportion of the total number of injuries at surface mines, these injuries were much more likely to result in death or significant amounts of lost time than most other surface mine injuries. These findings support the belief that haulage truck activities at dump sites are worthy of continued study by those interested in improving the health and safety of workers at surface mines.

"IntroductionThis paper is the seventh of a series describing an investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Mines on underground communication. A review of past work and results obtained has been published. The present paper deals with a study of line-radio or wired-wireless methods of communication, herein electrical energy is transmitted by metallic conductors.The use of line-radio over metallic conductors has been practiced for a number of years, and at present is being used on a large scale in long-distance carrier-current telephone and telegraph. The early work of the U. S. Army Signal Corps and the Bureau of Standards in using ordinary radio transmitting and receiving apparatus for communication over metallic conductors was been descried. Later publications describe commercial applications, and an excellent treatise and resume is given by E. Colpitts and C. B. Blackwell.Scope of ReportThis report contains (1) a discussion of the chief factors affecting carrier-current transmission, with particular reference in application to underground communication for mines; (2) a description of typical underground circuits used for power and lighting; and (3) description of apparatus used and results obtained in line-radio experiments in coal mines near Pittsburgh, with circuit diagrams, and conclusions as to power requirements and limitations for mine use."

The Bureau of Minas has been charged by the Congress with the responsibility for administrating the provisions of the Federal Coal-Mine Safety Act. One of the important duties of bureau inspectors under this act is to determine whether proper measures are taken to prevent mine explosions, which in moat miner includes Judea adequate rock dusting The investigation made after the explosion in Orient No. 2 mine, December 21, 1951, showed that much information is lacking on the adequacy of current rock-dusting and duet-sampling practices in the United States. To obtain such information, an intensive sampling survey was conducted by the Bureau in an Indiana coal mine. This paper summarizes the more Important findings from this survey, describes special samplings at several Pennsylvania coal miners, and discusses related studies in the Bureau's Experimental coal mine.

Recent worldwide demand has driven nickel and molybdenum prices to record high values. Alloys containing significant amounts of nickel and molybde- num, such as the austenitic and duplex grades, have experienced significant price increases and some spot shortages have resulted in some regions. With low or no nickel content and reasonable molybdenum content, super-ferritic stainless steels are now proving to be the most cost effective corrosion resistant materials. The electrochemical behavior APMT® (Fe–21Cr–5Al–3Mo–0.04C) and 4C54® (Fe–26.5Cr–0.8Mn–0.5Si) super-ferritic stainless steel in NaCl solutions has been studied using open circuit potential measurements, potentiodynamic polarization curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The aim is to compare the behavior of these materials with austenitic stainless steel alloy 316 (Fe–18Cr–10Ni– 2.5Mo). The results indicate that the APMT alloy presents a better performance than the AISI 316 stainless steel, while 4C54® does not, especially at anodic potentials. The good behavior of APMT® may be attributed to Al and Mo content in its composition.

Estas limitaciones en uso y manejo de la información así como la atmósfera social confrontacional persisten aun cuando se trabaje comprometidos con el desarrollo sostenible en un marco de responsabilidad social empresarial.

The Bureau of Mines, in its researches aimed to prevent wastes and to increase efficiency in oil-well practice, has investigated the matter of casing troubles and fishing methods. The results of the investigation are set forth in this paper. After expensive development work, many wells being drilled for oil have been abandoned because of casing troubles. These troubles in many instances have been thought to be insurmountable, whereas they are sometimes susceptible of solution. In fields_ where casing difficulties are of daily occurrence, methods have been evolved for combating them. Were these methods more widely known and applied wherever the same conditions exist, the oil industry at large would be greatly benefited. This report attempts to classify these troubles and suggests solutions that will save the operator discouragement and expense. It is assumed throughout this paper that the reader is so familiar with the ordinary oil-well drilling and fishing methods that detailed explanation is unnecessary. The well-drilling terms that are used herein will be readily understood by those for whom this discussion is intended. However, in order to avoid confusion as to the sense in which some of these terms are applied, definitions &re included.

In a Nation-wide appraisal of coking-coal reserves and of the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards, this study of the preparation characteristics of the coals in Cambria County, Pa. , was undertaken. Over 90 percent of the coal remaining in Cambria Comity is found in the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, Upper Kittanning, and Lower Kittanning beds. The Middle Kittanning bed, although mined on a commercial scale in the past, is not an important bed now, as most of the remaining reserves are too thin to be mined over wide areas. For many years, Cambria County has been an important source of coal for industrial and metallurgical purposes. The) principal production comes from the Lower Kittanning bed, which accounts for almost .60 percent of the Cambria County coal output. Table 1 shows the county's coal production, by beds, during 1948.

The particle-bubble attachment and the rupture of formed aggregates in flotation cell were investigated in terms of turbulent regime. It was found that the particle-bubble collision rate is closely correlated to the energy barrier between particles and bubbles, and no adhesion takes place for the hydrophilic particle-bubble system due to the introduced ?capture efficiency? f(a) being zero. The values of an especially defined Weber number, i.e. the ratios of turbulent stress to aggregate strength in the inertial subrange of turbulence were estimated, the results showed that the detachment of a particle from a bubble involved in an aggregate is mainly caused by the turbulent stress only in the impeller zone, no bubble splitting occurs both in the impeller zone and in the bulk zone.

Tests and observations of a Diesel-powered locomotive used for under-ground haulage, in a-clay mine were made by representatives-of the Bureau of Mines .primarily to determine the composition of the exhaust gases produced by the engine under actual haulage conditions-and to determine the effects of the operation on the quality of the mine atmosphere. In addition to ascertaining these conditional t proved interesting to analyze the test, data in regard to certain other performance, characteristics of the engine. This report presents results of tests of the mine locomotive, prefaced by a brief resume of the performance characteristics of Diesel engines to facilitate discussion.

Abstract-Gahnite, a zinc-bearing spinel, is a resistate mineral that may be used as an indicator mineral of polymetallic deposits in high-grade metamorphic terrain. The Ontario Geological Survey recently completed surficial mapping and sampling programs in the Separation Lake area of northwestern Ontario and Kinniwabi Lake area of northeastern Ontario in which gahnite was recovered from samples of surficial sediments. Ternary plots of the composition (ZnO, MgO, FeO[t]) of gahnite recovered from these surficial studies reveal three distinct groups: Group 1 is characterized by low (< 1 wt%) MgO values; Group 2 by higher (>1 wt%) MgO values; and Group 3 by higher FeO(t) values than Groups 1 and 2. The composition of in situ gahnite recovered from volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization, Zn-rich Sedex-type mineralization and peraluminous rare-element mineralized granite and pegmatite also was determined. The composition of the gahnite obtained from surficial samples was compared with that of in situ material. Gahnite from the peraluminous rareelement granite and pegmatite overlapped very well with surficial gahnite of Group 1. Gahnite from volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization and Sedex-type mineralization overlapped well with surficial gahnite of Group 2. These results suggest that determination of gahnite composition in indicator mineral surveys may be useful in exploration programs when assessing the mineral potential of a region.

In two recent papers stevens13,14 has compared the methods used by various investigators to calculate the contribution of grain boundary sliding to the total creep strain. In previous work Gittins15 has shown that the strain due to grain boundary sliding Egb may be estimated from the lateral, d, and vertical, v, displacements of a longitudinal marker line as it crosses a grain boundary. He obtained the formula, where nL is the number of grains per unit length measured on the specimens before creep, and \p and ?2 are, respectively, the angle between the grain boundary and the stress axis in the plane of the surface and normal to the surface (see Ref. 13, Fig. 1). The subscript L indicates that observations are made in a longitudinal direction parallel to the stress axis. It was generally found more convenient to measure the grain size of a specimen before creep; this was necessary to characterize the specimen. Stevens13,14 however prefers to define Egb in terms of NL, the number of grains per unit length after creep. Since nL - NL(l + €1) where cr is the total strain, Eq. 1 11 becomes The quantities d and ?, can be determined directly from the marker lines, while v and ?2 are found by sectioning normal to the surface. In the interior when symmetry considerations suggest that v = d and ?1 - ?2 the strain due to grain boundary sliding may be estimated from a suitable internal longitudinal marker line by the equation To determine cgb at the surface using either Eqs. |1| or [2] requires a large number of observations, particularly if many estimates of cgb are required, and also it is impossible to determine the variation of cgh with creep strain on the same specimen because the specimen must be sectioned to determine ?2. Gittins15 found that for a number of materials the sliding vectors d and v were related to each other so that provided one was measured the other could be estimated. Also during creep, grain boundaries tend to migrate to meet the surface at angles close to 90 deg,16 so that the term nL(v/tan?2)L was comparatively small when 4,- 90 deg. By determining the frequency distributions of ?2 on control specimens this term can be estimated without sectioning the creep specimen. In this way an empirical equation based on Eqs. |1| and |2| enables cgb to be determined with reasonable accuracy with fewer observations of the angles and sliding components. For B brass, the relationship between the sliding vectors indicated that ceb = 0.85nLVL . In Table I of Stevens paper this equation is stated to be incorrectly derived. However it should be pointed out that this is an empirical equation derived from Eq. |1|, based on a knowledge of the relationship between d and v and on the frequency distributions of ?1 and ?2 for a particular material under given experimental conditions. It was used only when these relationships were known, to reduce the number of observations required to estimate cb. Therefore the comment "derivation incorrect does not apply. Gittins did in fact make use of Eqs. |1| and 131. Author&apos;s Reply I must apologize to Dr. Gittins for the inadvertent misrepresentation of his work. Other slight errors in Table I have been pointed out to me. Langdon (No. 12 Table I), Gifkins (No. 7, Table I), and possibly other workers did not measure the number of boundaries per unit length after creep (A&apos;) but the corresponding quantity bejove creep (n). As Dr. Gittins points out, a completely analogous set of equations to those given in the paper can be derived by the same method: using the number of boundaries per unit length before instead of after creep. The basic equations corresponding to Eqs. [2] and 171 of the paper, from which all the others can be derived, are

The Chibougamau area represents a part of the Abitibi greenstone belt. The rocks constitute a volcanic pile (Roy Group) overlain by a volcano-detritic sequence (Opemisca Group). Three important periods of tectonic deformation have been distinguished. The first one produced folds with north-south horizontal axes. The second one is responsible for the isoclinal east-west folds, and the associated regional schistosity. Reverse faulting contemporaneous with this period of deformation, produced two distincts effects. In some cases the faults cause a repetition of the stratigraphic sequence. Whereas in others the faults truncate second period folds. Domes and basins interference pattern are produced by the superposed effect of Di and D2 deformations. The motion of these two periods would be more or less contemporaneous. The deformation could be generated by rising diapirs of early plutons combined with the progressive formation of troughs by gravitational subsidence of denser strata. The rising diapirs of late granitoid plutons produces a wraparound of the host strata.
