Optimal planning for mining the deep, lead-zinc-silver deposits of the Coeur d'Alene mining district, Shoshone County, Idaho, could be facilitated by a knowledge of the magnitude and direction of the pressure acting in the virgin rock. The distribution of primary stresses should be considered in order to prevent possibly destructive mining-induced stress concentrations. This particular investigation was concerned with determining stress in a zone 4,000 feet below the surface and known to be ender stress concentrations due to mining operations. Disking of the stress-relief cores obtained in a vertical down hole permitted qualitative evaluation from visual observations; the results indicate that a high lateral stress existed at the time the measurements were made. Stress-ellipsoid determinations gave a compressive principal stress of -13,000 psi oriented about N 45° W and nearly horizontal, a compressive principal stress of -11,000 psi oriented about S 45° W and abut 60° off the vertical pointing away from the vein, and a compressive principal stress -5 -7,000 psi oriented N 45° E and about 60° off the vertical, pointing toward the vein. Subsequent to the overcoring stress-relief drilling, a rock burst occurred about 100 feet northwest of the test site.

The considerable progress made in the sulfide smelting technology since the first International Sulfide Symposium of 1983 is discussed. The new developments and innovations have largely been driven by the recognition of environmental concern as well as the need for increased productivity. The smelting technologies for various nonferrous metals are reviewed, with an emphasis on the industry trend towards larger plants and continuous processes. The tremendous advances made in process modeling and computer simulation to describe the complex smelting processes are also reviewed. The goal of these mathematical models is the quantitative description of the processes and the reactors that will provide a means for the control and optimization of smelting operations as well as the optimal design of the operating conditions and the reactors. Environmental issues remain a key consideration in the smelting industry. One of the most remarkable improvements made in the last fifteen years since the 1983 Sulfide Smelting Symposium is the rapid increase in the sulfur capture by nonferrous smelters. This and other related issues are briefly discussed. Finally, the challenges that the smelting industry faces as the new millenium approaches are discussed. The industry continues to face technical challenges to improve productivity and efficiency, while being responsive to ever-increasing public pressure for environmental protection. It also faces external challenges from factors that may cause the reduction of metal uses as a result of substitutions by other materials. Another serious challenge and dire consequence that the primary metals industry is expected to face is the serious diminution of university-educated manpower as well as basic-research output. To remain competitive and healthy, the industry should take up the void left by the complete disappearance, at least in the U.S., and the reduction in other nations, of the governmental support of higher education and basic research in the field of primary metals production.

A joint federal-provincial approach in gathering basic information from industry on mine production, concentrator operations and ore reserves, initiated during 1978, is a major step toward the goal of achieving better government-industry communication through a common data base. Information from questionnaires sent out by provincial governments is shared with the federal government; correct interpretation is ensured by mine visits conducted jointly by provincial and federal representatives. Initial focus is on nonferrous metal mines. The federal Department of Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) is responsible for a national analysis that is aimed at the early detection of worrisome developments-and their reasons-in the flow from resources to reserves and from reserves to supply of these metals. The heart of the national analysis is the annual construction of a "monitoring curve", showing each metal's aggregated mine production as it would decrease over time if no new reserves and production capacity were to be added from the year of analysis. For a given metal, a comparison of monitoring curves from year to year can reveal early signs of supply stagnation. In anyone year, a monitoring curve in conjunction with foreseen needs for Canadian mine output will show the production gap that would have to be filled from reserves and production capacity yet to be developed. The production gaps for copper, nickel, zinc and lead, the four leading base metals mined in Canada, are shown for the 20-year period ahead, in the context of production achieved during the past 20 years. It is shown that reserve levels commensurate with likely future production levels would require that average annual reserve additions during 1978-98 exceed the average annual additions during the preceding 20 years. Reserve levels of all four metals have declined in recent years. A review of significant discoveries in the last five years suggests that this fall in reserves is not the result of a lack of exploration successes, but of stagnation in development for various economic reasons.

THE Midvale mill of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company is situated on a flat site whose elevation is 50 ft above that of the Jordan River. Tailings are impounded in the area between the river and the flat upon which the mill and railroad switchyard are located. The water supply is pumped from the Galena canal which leads from the river at a point some ten miles to the south. The mill has a present capacity of approximately 1700 tons daily. It started out originally in 1926 as a 750 ton three-unit plant. The tonnage was gradually increased to 1200 tons by 1934, and in late 1935 a fourth unit was added. The accompanying flowsheet shows the principal equipment and how it is utilized. The ore is principally sulphide with varying degrees of oxidation, with individual lots ranging widely in both precious and base metal content. "INTRODUCTION The Southern Cross district in Deer Lodge County, Mont., has been chiefly a gold producer. Most of the production has come from gold-bearing hematite-limonite ores. Some of these ores were mined and shipped to smelters for use as flux in smelting copper ores. A magnetite deposit in the Pomeroy property, containing no gold or other economic nonferrous minerals, was mined from 1921 to 1923, the ore being shipped to smelters for flux.The iron-bearing deposits in the Southern Cross area were examined by Bureau of Nines engineers/ on June 28, 1943, and October 14, 1943. As a result, a Bureau exploration project was recommended; it was conducted during 1944. A magnetometer survey was first made of the magnetite-bearing area at and in the vicinity of the Pomeroy property. Exploration by diamond core drilling was then conducted within this area, and in the Southern Cross and Hold Fast properties. The cyanide tailings dump at the Hold Fast mill was sampled by auger drilling.This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau of Mines exploration."

The pre-fabricated outdoor rooms are often utilised near the mines and construction sites for office purposes. The paper has presented modelling and simulation results of the integration of commercially available glass coated photovoltaic (PV) energy technology and solar ventilation technology into a pre-fabricated outdoor room. The pre-fabricated outdoor room has been setup at Concordia University, Montréal for full scale testing of the glass coated PV modules with solar air ventilation. The computer simulation model has been developed for PV modules installed on a double wall wooden frame in an outdoor room based on its preliminary field testing. The testing apparatus was a wooden frame assembly of double wall with solar air ventilation: two adjacent glass coated PV modules, air column and plywood board filled with polystyrene. The measurement data collected from various sensors were: solar intensity, ambient air temperature, room air temperature, electric power, surface temperatures of PV modules and plywood board, air velocities and air temperatures in the air column. The enhancement in the air velocity of the air column was achieved with an exhaust fan fixed in an outdoor room. The simulation model is used to perform the two dimensional energy analyses with applied one dimensional solution of steady state heat conduction equations. The simulation model is based on conjugate heat exchange paths with network boundary conditions of convection, radiation heat exchange and solar air ventilation heat transport. The model parameters are based on measured values of ambient air temperature, room air temperature, air velocity at outlet of air column in double wall, electric power and available solar intensity. The model has predicted fairly well energy performance of glass coated PV modules with solar air ventilation installed on a wooden frame. The model is also useful for predicting heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) requirements for the pre-fabricated outdoor rooms.

A Smart Cell is a closed-type tip post-grouting device that is attached to the bottom of the steel reinforcement cage of a drilled shaft and is used to enhance performance and to reduce uncertainty thereof. Control of the grout is maintained within the device during injection and a uniform stress is imparted across entire base area simultaneously, inducing a pre-mobilization load into the shaft as well as the soil. This paper describes the construction and tip post-grouting of drilled shafts from two bridge projects in the Santa Cruz, Bolivia region along the Paraí River. During the grouting process at each project site, there were noticeable differences in the grouting pressures achieved and responses observed, even within short distances between shafts. For this project, the greater benefit of using the Smart Cells was the reduction of risk and uncertainty of performance due to the highly variable soil conditions. Ultimately, since the response of each shaft was observed during grouting and because a “minimum” value of shaft resistance (i.e., pre-mobilization of load) was measured, there is a greater reliability with the anticipated performance of the shafts when axial loading is eventually applied.

"In 2013, Augered Cast-in-Place (ACIP) piles are a mature foundation technology throughout the United States. General guidelines for the design and construction of ACIP piles are available along with numerous references for design in specific North American geologies. In fact, the current generation of contractors and geotechnical practitioners might view ACIP piles as just another deep foundation option to be considered, along with driven piles, drilled shafts and others. This acceptance has developed, however, over a 60-plus year period.The term, Augered Pressure-Grouted (APG) pile is often used when referring to ACIP piles because the piles emerged out of construction processes at the Intrusion-Prepakt firm in the late 1940s. The company’s specialty was pressure grouting and preplaced aggregate concrete. The grouting was typically accomplished by driving a pipe to a target level and then injecting grout under pressure. In some soil conditions, it was necessary to use an auger to reach the desired grouting depth. In these circumstances, the grout pipe was driven beside the auger and grout was pumped as the auger was withdrawn. The grout pipe was then withdrawn as well. This was the genesis of the APG, or ACIP pile, and many piles were installed using this technique. The patent application, “Method for Forming Piles” was filed by Raymond Patterson of Intrusion-Prepakt in 1951, and the patent was granted in 1956. The process was eventually modified when a suitable hollow-stem auger was developed. Licenses were granted to the Lee Turzillo Contracting Company and Berkel & Company Contractors, Inc. in the late 1950s. The installation of these piles was, and still is, a highly nuanced process; “contractor dependent” is a term often seen today. Intrusion-Prepakt, Berkel and Turzillo all had personnel who were part of the original group that developed the system and who appreciated the craftsmanship involved in forming sound piles."

HOWARD H. PRESTON, professor of economics and business at the University of Washington, presented a paper before the North Pacific Section, A.I.M.E., on Jan. 23, on the "Economic Aspects of Gold and Silver." He carefully reviewed recent governmental actions that have affected those metals and gave an interpretation of their effects. A brief excerpt from his address; follows: Including the proclamation of March 6, 1933, the principal steps of the present Administration which have carried the United States off the gold standard and led up to the present program have been: (1) The Presidential proclamation of March 6 controlling gold. (2) The monetary sections of the Emergency Banking Act of March 9. (3) Mobilization of gold under Executive orders issued March 10 and April 5. (4) The gold embargo by Executive order, April 20. (5) The controlled inflation bill, May 12. (6) The joint resolution abrogating the gold clauses, June 5. (7) The Executive orders on newly mined gold, Aug. 28. "THE OTTAWA BRANCH, CIM, each year holds a symposium on a subject of topical interest. The symposium this year was on Canada's Offshore Mineral Resources, at which papers were presented by: Dr. Donald G. Crosby, chief, Resource Administration Di-vision, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa; John A. Beesley, head, Legal Division, Department of External Affairs, Ottawa; and David W. Smith, man-ager, offshore exploration and production, Shell Canada Limited, Calgary. Because of the interest which this topic holds for our members, and because of the wealth and significance of information presented, the three papers -representing the first comprehensive review of our offshore resources -are reproduced herewith. The opening remarks of the Chairman, Dr. F. K. North, Professor of Geology, Carleton University, are also recorded, together with a few of the questions asked by the large attending audience. The symposium was held February 13th, and was organized by Dr. W. M. Tupper, chairman of the Branch Program Commit-tee. Differences in the extent of the continental shelf will be noted in the papers. These differences are related to slightly different definitions of the continental shelf by the authors."

CONSIDERABLE progress has been made during the last few years in analyzing the action of plastic deformation in metallic crystals. This is due largely to the development of X-ray spectrographic methods for studying changes in the orientation of single crystals, or of conglomerates, as they occur during the process of plastic deformation, but partly to the widespread knowledge of suitable technique for preparing large (single or variously combined) crystals for direct crystallographic observation under stress or in various conditions of strain. These two methods of studying changes in the crystalline structure of metals may of course be used in conjunction with features of mutual support, but unfortunately the advantage of direct crystallographic observation is lost when we proceed to the study of severely cold-worked structures, owing to the occurrence of real or apparent crystalline discontinuities which become more and more complicated as the amount of plastic action increases. Furthermore, the X-ray methods do not appear to be adequate, at least in their present stage of development, to fix definitely the character of structural alteration in the parent crystal lattice by plastic deformation. The principal question at issue concerns the nature of the crystalline particles that remain after plastic deformation. These are generally known in our American metallurgical literature as crystalline fragments,' and they seem, indeed, to diffract as individuals causing the Hull pattern of a severely cold-worked metal to resemble the pattern of a fine powder,2 with certain features of preferred orientation among the particles deter- mined by the manner and intensity of cold working. We must freely concede that there are conceptions of lattice alteration, apart from that of simple fragmentation, which would account for an increasing number of lattice positions according to X-ray spectrographic observation as the degree of deformation increased.

The Strathcona mine, with a large new underground operation and concentrator, was recently brought into\ production by Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. The tailings disposal and water utilization problems at Strathcona are described in this paper, with sections devoted to the Moose Lake watershed system, tailing impounds, the construction of dams and the operation of the Moose Lake neutralization plant for the elimination of acidity, including the equipment used.

Compilation of data on materials of metallurgical interest is one of the important activities of the Berkeley Thermodynamics Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. Recent renewed interest in metallurgy of vanadium renders the present compilation a timely guide for experimentation to improve present methods or to develop better methods of extractive metallurgy. Thermodynamic data for vanadium and its inorganic compounds have been critically surveyed, selected, and compiled into one convenient reference from which information can be readily obtained for evaluating heat balances, determining trends, and establishing limits of metallurgical processes. By indicating the direction of experimentation, this report enables the saving of time, effort, and expense which would otherwise be necessary for trial and error experimentation. Much of the data has been obtained experimentally at the Berkeley laboratory. Other data were collected through an extensive survey of worldwide literature through April 1965. Estimates were made when no data were avail-able. Data on the vanadium halides was sparse, and the results derived from existing data were at times divergent. Some of the selected values for the halides may need modification as more or better experimental data become available.

Companies mining for coal, oil shale, and minerals in the western US must often complete extensive geotechnical studies to satisfy federal and state regulations. The modern mining process is further complicated by the legal problems and liabilities associated with mineral rights and land leasing. Yet the study of water rights-unique to the West is often incomplete or ignored until the latter stages of mine planning. Water rights in the West are not adequately understood by many mining companies and their geotechnical consultants. Some firms, headquartered outside the western US, have not had to contend with the water supply problems of a semi-arid region. Water problems encountered by eastern mining companies, for example, are primarily water quality, drainage, and flood control. Even when water quantity is a problem in these areas, ownership and/or use of it is governed by entirely different legal and administrative concepts than in the West. Both legal and engineering issues have to be considered when studying western water rights. Legal issues, such as existence and title, must be addressed to insure that a particular water right is properly established and maintained. The exercise of a water right, however, often requires engineering analyses that focus on preventing injury to the properly established water rights of others.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines currently is researching the relationship between the level of back strength and the probability of low-back injury. This report is a review of the literature and statistics on over-exertion injuries. Overexertion continues to be a significant source of injury in metal and nonmetal mining, accounting for approximately 24 pct of all injuries yearly. These injuries, particularly to the lower back, can be very expensive in human and monetary terms. An examination of the accident data on overexertion injuries is necessary to provide a background for research into prevention and/or amelioration of those in-juries. The job categories outlined in the Accident Data Analysis data base most affected are "Mechanic/Electrician" and "Mill/Plant Worker." The age group most affected is "30-39" years, and the experience group most affected is "0-.99" years. The most prevalent type of overexertion injury is "Strain/Sprain," and the trunk is the body part most often involved in an overexertion injury.

"Hydrocyclones are used in various industrial applications, including mineral processing and tailings management, to separate or classify solid particles and/or liquid droplets from multiphase feed. The fluid flow in a hydrocyclone (used in mineral processing) was investigated numerically and experimentally using particle-image velocimetry (PIV) and refractive index matching techniques. Two turbulence models were used in the calculations: the k–? model and the Reynolds stress model. Particle image velocimetry measurements were taken at various spatial locations along the cyclone. Computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow-rate readings at the boundaries, and locally by comparing the PIV velocity-vector maps and profiles.RÉSUMÉ On utilise les hydrocyclones dans diverses applications industrielles, dont la minéralurgie et la gestion des résidus, pour séparer les particules solides et/ou les gouttelettes liquides de l’alimentation polyphasée, ou pour les classifier. "Laboratory study of the behaviour• of binary coal blends shows that coke strength is more closely dependent on the distribution of ""reactive"" oxygen in the parent coals than on their proximate, elemental or petrographic compositions, and it also appears possible to qualitatively predict coke strength from information about reactive oxygen. Proceeding from this recognition, experiments were carried out to test the possibility of preparing metallurgical cokes from binary blends in which non-caking hvb coal was substantially freed of reactive oxygen by prior heat t1•eatment under controlled conditions. The results indicate that such blends can yield surprisingly strong cokes and that coke strength may be amenable to further improvements by modifying the size distribution of the pre-heated component and the rate at which it is charred."

The JORC Code lists the three core principles of Transparency, Materiality and Competency as fundamental to how mineral estimates are publicly reported. But where the principles of Transparency and Materiality can be considered conscious choices underlying decisions at the point of disclosure, Competency is a self-declared position statement based on one’s confidence to defend a technical position (as well as the functional pre-requisites of institute membership and a minimum of five years relevant experience).Developing competency in the mining industry is an ad hoc process, generally left to the individual to chart through a process of osmosis from personal work experiences that lead to a sufficient level of confidence. Companies that actually present professional development programs leading to reporting competency are rare. And even once a person has followed a program, there is no specific outline of what constitutes technical competence.No doubt, there are persons signing off on mineral statements who would benefit from developing and/or updating their technical skills (they may not even be aware of unmastered skills). Equally, there are technical practitioners who are sufficiently competent, but lack the confidence to step up and publicly report their estimates. Confidence in one’s own abilities plays a significant role in deciding when one is ready for the responsibility of submitting mineral estimates for public consumption. In addition, a person’s organisational support, such as the availability of suitable peers and professional development programs, and opportunities to learn from a variety of technical projects contribute to developing relevant experience. Increased exposure in both technical breadth and depth enhance confidence in one’s ability and competence.The mining industry provides numerous opportunities through direct and indirect means to develop the competency underpinning a stable reporting code. This paper examines a theoretical framework and associated processes that could be used to examine how the mining industry, companies and individuals collaborate to develop this vague principle of competency. This paper seeks to initiate research with the express purpose of enabling more effective and efficient development of reporting competency in our industry.
