The first paper on Monday morning dealt with the location of a diabase dike near Chapel Hill, N. C., by magnetic and resistivity methods. The magnetic indications were pronounced directly over the dike. whereas the anomalies of apparent resistivity were less distinct and displaced away from the dike. A table of factors, for rapid, accurate calculation of the volume of pure helium in cylindrical steel containers, is presented. By use of the table the volume of helium in a container, at base conditions of 14.7 psia and 70° F, can be calculated from the observed pressure and temperature of the helium and the known internal volume of the container. The table covers a pressure range from a to 4,500 psia in 10 psi increments and a temperature range of 0° to 120° F in 2° increments. The calculation of volume requires a single multiplication, using a factor from the table and the known internal volume of the container. A discussion and evaluation of the accuracy obtainable and a derivation of the formula used (which takes into account compressibility of helium, thermal expansion of steel containers, and the stretch of steel due to internal pressure) are presented. An example showing how the table can be used is given also.

This manuscript aimed to examine the impact of operating parameters on the wet grinding of talc in a vertical-type stirred media mill. Within the scope of the research, the effects of operating parameters including media filling ratio, solid mass fraction, grinding media size, and grinding time were studied. The findings were assessed based on the product particle size (d50, d10), surface area (Sw), and energy consumption (Em). As a result of the present research, the following optimum grinding test conditions were determined: 65% media filling ratio, 40% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. After determining the optimum grinding conditions, the Box–Behnken statistical design was used to determine the effect of parameter interactions on the d50 size. The media filling ratio was found to significantly affect the decrease in d50 compared to the other two parameters. Furthermore, the minimum d50 size was also achieved under optimum grinding conditions.

This report is one of a series made by the Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement with the Coordinating Fuel and Equipment Research Committee of the Coordinating Research Council, Inc., on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines. The series of surveys is a continuation of like work conducted from 1940 to 1946 by the National Bureau of Standards under a similar cooperative agreement. A list of reports of previous surveys is given at the end of this paper.

This report deals with a portion of the research and development work in the field of synthesis gas purification, carried out by the Bureau of Mines at its Morgantown, W, Va., Station in cooperation with West Virginia University. The Bureau's work in connection with gas purification has been performed with the objective of finding effective, low-cost, processes for removing impurities from synthesis gas to protect the catalyst used in the Fischer-Tropsch process for production of liquid fuels. Synthesis gas used for the production of other chemicals, such as ammonia, alcohols, and methane, requires equally rigorous purification. Although present-day practice in the manufactured-gas industry does not require such a high degree of purification, there is increasing interest in the complete removal of sulfur compounds from city gas. Although the gas-purification work at Morgantown deals with several impurities, major effort has been devoted to organic sulfur compounds in gas; this paper represents a progress report on some of the more important studies in connection with those compounds. Because this is a progress report on the Bureau's experimental work, no attempt has been made to cover the work of others on the subject; references to the literature have been restricted to those bearing directly on the work described.

In this paper, we review the equations needed to construct an ion exchange column model. These models contain three major components: 1) a differential material balance around the colunm, 2) a differential material balance around an ion exchange particle, and 3) a constitutive equation for diffusive flux We then examine the ability of a fairly simple mathematical model to predict ion exchange column experimental data. This model contains the traditional absorption theory equations and is used to predict the behavior of a column filled with a hydrous crystalline silico-titanate and which is removing trace amounts of Cs+ from a high pH, complex electrolyte solution. Finally, we propose replacing Fick's law with the Nernst-Planck equation as the constitutive equation for diffusive flux We use a Nernst-Planck type model to predict batch experimental data, then evaluate it by comparing it's ability to predict experimental data to that of a more traditional Fick's law type model? The data from this comparison suggests that the Nemst-Planck type model yields better results.

As sponge iron is much like porous, coarse sand, it is a tempting material to use in place of coarse scrap iron as a precipitant of metals, for scrap iron is relatively awkward to handle and exposes only a small amount of surface to pregnant solutions. The results of the experiments described in this bulletin are largely a record of the behavior of sponge iron as a precipitant of lead and copper under laboratory conditions comparable to those that would obtain in a commercial plant were it attempted to secure the maximum contact of surface between solution and precipitant. Physically, the study is largely one of the rates of diffusion of the metal ions in the solutions and through the metallic coatings surrounding the sponge iron particles. The practical objectives are to remove completely the valuable metals from solution and at the same time to obtain a precipitate of good grade. In order to fulfill this latter requirement, the precipitant should be almost completely consumed. These practical ends are usually secured by having the two substances involved pass each other counter-currently-that is, in such a manner as to have the strongest precipitant in contact with the most impoverished solution, and vice versa. EXPERIMENTS WITH LEAD SOLUTIONS In nearly all of the schemes involving the leaching of lead from its ores the metal has been put into solution as the chloride, and fairly concentrated liquors have been employed. The solubility of lead under such conditions is comparatively small at best; the hot pregnant liquors from which the metal is to be precipitated are then made nearly saturated with respect to lead, and only a very small amount of acid is used. Therefore it was not as necessary to learn the behavior of the sponge iron in precipitating lead from solutions of widely differing composition as to learn under what conditions, and with what mechanisms, this precipitation might be carried out most readily.

This report 3/gives the results of a reconnaissance of the mining districts in Lander County, Nev., made from March 29 to April 20 and from May 9 to May 21, 1938, during which virtually all of the mining districts n the county were visited. No attempt has been made to include in this report all the mines and prospects in the various mining districts, and it should be stated that whether or not a property is mentioned herein has no. bearing on its merits. The report rovers the situation of the various districts, types of ore deposits, ownership and description of mines and prospects, information on past and current activity, and other information of economic interest likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. The names of the various districts mentioned are those generally used when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. When originally organized, the districts embraced large areas with no well-defined boundaries, so that the names have little geographical significance.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1954 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 101 samples of aviation gasoline. Data also are given for 30 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers I 1954 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 19 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 15 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

Of the common causes of the larger mine accidents, such as falls of roof and coal, gas and dust explosions, mine fires, and the misuse of explosives, all of which are often closely related, each must be studied and fought in a manner peculiar to itself. The last mentioned, the misuse of black powder and other explosives, is sometimes considered the least important of these causes of mine accidents; but its impor- tance is much greater than the statistics indicate, for the reason that the misuse of explosives is the true cause of many of the fatal mine fires, gas or dust explosions, and falls of roof that are credited to other causes. Both the quantity of explosives used and the number of purposes to which they are applied are increasing. They are now made at about 150 plants, in different parts of the United States, and the product of a single year is estimated at nearly 500,000,000 pounds. Nothing in all this material is a safe or "safety" explosive when in the hands of a careless or ignorant person; and this is true whether considered in connection with the shipment or the use of these explosives. In addition to the large losses of life and property resulting from an improper use of explosives in mining, the recent statistics of the railway bureau for the safe transportation of explo- sives have shown more than 400 persons killed or injured and over $3,000,000 worth of property destroyed by explosives in transit by rail. The fact that three years of cooperative effort under the wise supervision of this bureau has reduced these losses to almost nothing encourages the hope that similar cooperative effort may likewise greatly lessen losses of life and property from the use of explosives in mining. The additions to the large death roll of our mines make a recurring appeal to the public for fair treatment of the coal-mining industry, and to the miner and the manager that they join in every possible effort for greater safety. It may never be possible under conditions such as exist to-day to prevent mine accidents entirely. INCREASING attention has been given in the last decade to the possibilities of mine leasing in the West. The practice as described in this article does not refer to the leasing of entire properties for corporate operation. It is intended to deal rather with the advantages and problems incident to leasing portions of properties to individuals who themselves, individually or in groups, do the actual mining and transportation of the ore. These individuals are sometimes called "leasers" and sometimes called "tributors." The contracts under which they work set up an independent relationship of lessor and leaser, between themselves and the mineowner or operator. This relationship has many advantages to both sides over those created by the ordinary relationship of employer and employe. From the standpoint of the owners there is no liability on independent contractors for industrial injuries, social security taxes, unemployment taxes, or the manifold restrictions of the Federal Labor Relations and Wage Hour Acts and similar state acts where they exist. As the leaser's income depends on the quantity and quality of ore produced, there is a distinct incentive for maximum production of a good grade of ore. This in turn promotes careful mining of the areas under lease. Ordinarily in mining, labor cost is a high percentage of the total cost of operation. Under a leasing system, even if the leasers be allowed to retain half of the gross values that they produce, and the owner or operator gets half, in the case of marginal ore bodies this is ordinarily more than the lessor would realize if the property were worked by day labor. "L'Abitibi québécois a produit essentiellement de l’or, du cuivre, du zinc et de I' argent, ainsi que de faibles quantités de nickel, de plomb, de molybdène, de bismuth, de lithium, de fer et d’amiante. Depuis l’ouverture de la mine Horne en 1927, cent-cinquante mines ont contribué à la production de 1 420 tonnes d’or de 4,1 millions de tonnes de cuivre et de 4,7 millions de tonnes de zinc. Les productions minières annuelles ont été d'importance variable: des records de production ont été établis en 1955 pour I' or avec 35 tonnes et, vers 1965, pour le cuivre, le zinc et la quantile globale de minerai extrait avec respectivement 130,000, 275 000 et 13 millions de tonnes. Deux dépressions généralisées ont eu lieu, l’une vers 1946 et l'autre, a lafin des années soixante-dix. Des ralentissements de la production ont été observes pour le cuivre en 1953 et le zinc en 1959. Depuis le debut des années quatre-vingt. I' or et, de façon plus irreguliere, le zinc sont en progression, landis que le cuivre, malgre une hausse en 1983. pour suit son dec/in.La teneur de récupération des mines d’or est demeurée régulière et n’a subi qu’une faible diminution au cours des quarante dernières années. Célie du cuivre a diminué d'environ 50% dans la même période, landis que celle du zinc a subi d’import antes variations, aussi bien positives que négatives. Près des trois quarts des mines d'or ont une durée de vie inférieure à 12 ans et la distribution des tonnages de minerai extrait montre un maximum pour la classe de 100 000 à 1 million de tonnes. Du cote des mines de métaux de base, la durée de vie est plus étalée et les volumes de minerai ont une occurrence maximale dans la classe de 1 à 10 millions de tonnes.Concernant la distribution géographique de la production minière dans l'Abitibi québécois, le camp minier de Rouyn-Noranda vient en tête pour l’extraction de minerai et la production d’or et de cuivre. L’est sui vi par le camp de Val d'Or pour le minerai et l’or, landis que le camp de Chapais-Chibougamau occupe la deuxième place pour le cuivre avec une production équivalence a 60% de celle de Rouyn-Noranda. Le camp de Cadillac-Malartic suit de tres pres celui de Val d'Or pour ce qui est de I' or. Finalement, dans le casdu zinc, le camp minier de Joutel-Matagami domine largement avec une production qui a connu un développement accélère depuis 1963. Une analyse pré liminaire de ces données indique qu' i/ subsiste unpotentiel encore élevé de production d'or, décuivre et de zinc dans I' Abitibi québécois. ABSTRACTThe Quebec portion of the Abitibi belt has essentially produced gold, copper, zinc and silver, as well as some small quantities of nickel, lead, molybdenum, bismuth, lithium, iron and asbestos. Since the opening of the Horne mine in 1927, one hundred and fifty mines have produced 1420 tons of gold, 4,1 millions tons of copper and4,7 millions tons of zinc. Annual mine production has fluctuated: production records were established in 1955 for gold with 35 tons, and around 1965 for all extracted ore copper and zinc with respectively 13 millions, 130 000 and 275 000 tons. Two main recessions have occurred, the first around 1946 and the second during the late seventies. Cut backs in copper and zinc production occurred in 1953 and1959. Since the beginning of the eighties, gold production and to a lesser extent zinc production have been in progression. Except for a small jump in 1983, copper production is still declining.The average recuperation grade of gold mines has been quite steady and has only slightly diminished in the past forty years. The average copper recuperation grade was halved during the same time interval. For zinc there have been important ups and downs. At least three quarters of gold mines have an average lifespan of 12 years the tonnage distribution shows a peak in the 100 000 to 1 million tons class. Base metals mines show a more widespread life expectancy and have a tonnage peak in the 1 to 10 millions tons range"

As of June 30, 1970, Federal regulations required the operator of each underground coal mine to maintain the average concentration of respirable dust below legislative standards. As of March 1, 1971, over 152,000 respirable dust samples have been processed by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 75 percent of underground working sections are being sampled in accordance with Federal regulations. Results indicate that 72 percent of the sections which have completed at least one basic sampling cycle are below 3.0 mg/m3, the standard in effect under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (P.L. 91-173). Notices of Violation were issued on 1,670 underground mines for failure to begin a sampling program; Withdrawal Orders were issued in 64 of these instances. Notices of Violation were issued on 1,121 sections where applicable dust levels were exceeded; Withdrawal Orders were issued in seven of these instances. There are 381 mining sections currently operating on permit; from the interim Compliance Panel.

This paper describing the practice at the tungsten concentrator of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co., Inc., at Mill City, Nev., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on milling practices, methods, and costs in the United States. The ore, which contains about 1.10 per cent of scheelite (CaW04), is concentrated on tables and by means of a magnetic separator and roasters. A product containing 70.43 tungsten trioxide is shipped. The plant was designed for a capacity of 100 tons per 24 hours, but at present 142 tons of ore are milled per day. The author acknowledges the assistance of William O. The semi-autogenous grinding mill is the bottleneck whenever treating hard and finely fragmented ore at Benguet Corporation's Kaline Concentrator. Low milling rates result from very high and fluctuating mill power draw. Attempts to use a mill horsepower control loop to regulate feed rate were unsuccessful because of operational upsets caused by fluctuations in feed rate on downstream operations. The objective of the computer control was to maximize tonnage throughput by stabilizing the power draw at a high but safe level without upsetting subsequent operations. The semi-autogenous mill is operated in closed circuit with a stationary screen. Instrumentation consists of a feed weightometer, a power transmitter to measure mill load, a headwater flowmeter and an ultrasonic level sensor to measure the mill discharge sump level. A 64 k-byte FOX-3 Foxboro computer processes field data from various sensors and manipulates the input control variables. These variables are the fresh feed rate and the headwater flowrate. Feed rate is controlled through a supervisor-type computer program aimed at maximizing and stabilizing power draw. The control scheme was according to how the operators responded during an operator-directed automatic control mode. Mill dilution is similarly controlled. Results achieved reflect a 3% increase in tonnage milled because of the reduction in control variability that ensued.

"Large deposits of sodium sulphate exist in southern Saskatchewan in the brines or muddy crystal beds of alkali Jakes. Currently, more than 300,000 tons per year of sodium sulphate are produced from these lakes and sold as salt cake to the paper industry. Most of the production is obtained from the brines of a limited number of Jakes.The Saskatchewan Research Council was requested to develop a process for recovering sodium sulphate from the muddy crystal beds so that this type of deposit could be exploited in the future. A flowsheet was developed with the aid of phase diagram data and the process was studied on a pilot-plant scale using raw material from three different lakes. Satisfactory yields and product purities were obtained in all cases, and an economic analysis indicated that a 100,000-ton-per-year sodium sulphate plant could produce salt cake at a cost of $12.26 per ton for a rate of return upon investment of 16 per cent at current market prices."

The data in this bulletin were obtained during an investigation of screening practice by the University of Illinois engineering experiment station and the United States Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement between them and the State of Illinois Geological Survey Division. Earlier work on this subject includes a study of the general practice of coal preparation in Illinois, made in 1914 and published in 1916,1 and an investigation of Illinois coal-washing methods, results of which were published in 1912 in a bulletin 2 that contained complete information on the methods then in use for sizing washed coal. OBJECTS OF THE INVESTIGATION The present investigation was limited to a study of screening as applied in preparing mineral products with the expectation of obtaining more comprehensive information on screening machinery.
