Given: the process tonnage, performance objectives, and plant floor area, the paper will outline the metallurgical and machine hydrodynamic scale-up procedures for translating the lab flotation test results to the design of a full size flotation machine installation, including the machine number, size, and arrangement. Machine selection considerations for rougher, scavenger and cleaner duty, and special considerations relative to specific applications, will be summarized where appropriate. The value of kinetic modeling in quantitative metallurgical (lab to full size machine) scale-up will be reviewed considering a coal installation, and design information for additional applications such as copper, molybdenum, iron, phosphate, and potash will be discussed.

Microbiological leaching has been used as an alternative approach to conventional hydrometallurgical methods of uranium extraction. In the microbiological leaching process, iron-oxidizing bacteria oxidize pyritic phases to ferric iron and sulfuric acid, and uranium is solubilized from the ore due to sulfuric acid attack. If uranium in the ore material is in the reduced, tetravalent form (UIV), a red ox reaction is involved whereby uranium is oxidized to the hexavalent form (UvI) upon dissolution. In acid-leaching systems, the primary oxidant is ferric iron, which is reduced to ferrous iron by its chemical reaction with UIV. The ferrous iron thus formed is reoxidized to ferric iron by iron-oxidizing bacteria such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. Nutritional requirements and responses to environmental extremes of acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria are appraised. The S-entity in Fe-sulfides is oxidized to sulfate by bacteria similar to Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans. Pyrite and marcasite oxidation is a sulfuric acid forming reaction. Heap, dump and in situ leach techniques are feasible as bacterial leaching systems.

A conventional paddle-type mixer and a gravity-flow mixing device were evaluated for conditioning of fine phosphate feed (- 35 + 150 mesh) with fatty acid and fuel oil, and for acid scrubbing prior to cationic flotation. Gravity-flow mixing re- quired less residence time but slightly higher reagent concentrations to achieve recovery levels similar to conventional conditioning. Grade was less sensitive to reagent concentration using the gravity-flow mixer. For acid scrubbing, the gravity-flow mixer proved equally effective. In this paper, the effect of time, pulp density, reagent concentration, and emulsification on conditioning and acid scrubbing efficiency of the two devices is discussed.

In general, process control systems in solid-solid separation have not evolved to the same level as in flotation circuit control. Perhaps one of the more significant contributing factors in this regard is the lack of suitable on-line analytical instrumentation. In spite of the obstacles, some interesting work has been done. This paper presents a review of current industrial control strategies in ore sorting, dense media separation, gravity separation and electrical and magnetic separation.

In this work, the slurry flow in the ball mill is solved with Navier-Stokes' equations and the marker and cell technique (MAC), which tracks the fluid-free surface. Considering different planes in the radial and axial directions, this numerical approach leads to the direct calculation of the slurry velocity profile, mill holdup, and volumetric flow in the ball charge and pool. The MAC technique takes as input, the results of a direct three-dimensional simulation of the motion of grinding media, and in turn, provides a detailed knowledge of the hydrodynamics of slurry flow through the porous structure of ball load. This technique is a new approach to the mass transport problem that overcomes the limitations of indirect studies such as residence time analysis and holdup measurements.

The problem of long-term production scheduling in an underground coal mine is approached through the concepts of sequencing theory. Based on a typical layout of mining sections, the principles for the approach are: 1. The definition of mining sections as jobs, and mining methods as machines. 2. The reduction of the overall mining activity to the general problem of nonpreemptive scheduling of precedence related jobs on parallel machines. 3. The simplification of the layout to a general type directed network with the nodes representing jobs and the arcs representing precedence relations. 4. The determination of a feasible and near-optimal job schedule given the objective of maximizing the total net present value of the jobs. A general scheduling heuristic is being developed for implementation on an IBM personal computer (PC) as part of an interactive computer system for long-term production planning.

The work reported herein compares the support characteristics of two different types of roof truss subjected to the same force in the horizontal tension member. The major differences between the two trusses are in the sequence of tensioning the horizontal and inclined members and in the design of the loading brackets. A photoelastic model was used to compare stresses at points along the roof of the mine opening and at the junction of the roof surface and the rib. The effects of simulated subsidence on stress in the roof and on tension in the horizontal member were analyzed. Results indicate that there are significant differences in the overall support characteristics of the two trusses. Conclusions are drawn relative to which type of roof truss provides the most favorable support if the horizontal members are tensioned equally.

In this study, numerical simulations of yield pillars employing the finite element method with time-dependent Drucker-Prager material model are conducted. The stress control mechanism of yield pillars on weak floor strata is studied. The development of pillar yield zone, the distribution of pillar stress and the development of failure zone in the weak floor strata are investigated. The study indicates that a properly selected yield pillar size may significantly reduce the peak stress induced in the weak floor strata and effectively control the development of failure zone in the floor.

This paper presents and compares characteristics of aggregate / quarrying software packages currently on the market, each product having strengths beneficial under different circumstances. To be successful, the developers must confront the limitations of their packages under a variety of situations, address the unique characteristics of the aggregate industry, and pay particular attention to the applicability of their products in real situations.

Lamproite occurs in two locations in southeastern Kansas that are in close proximity to each other. In both locations, the lamproite is restricted to north- east-elongated, ellipsoidal depressions measuring about 3 mi by 1.5 mi. At the surface and in the shallow subsurface, lamproite occurs as sills that were intruded into Middle and Upper Pennsylvanian rocks consisting of shale, limestone, and minor sandstone. Isotopic age determinations by Zartman and others (1967) indicate that the lamproite was intruded during the Late Cretaceous (88-91 my). Drillholes for hydrocarbon exploration down to a depth of about 1,400 ft (top of the Mississippian) and numerous shallow drillholes (mostly 200-300 ft) by the Kansas Geological Survey in the northern portion of Silver City dome helped to understand the structural complexity and extent of the near-surface sills. Numerous radial faults showing small apparent vertical offsets limit the lateral continuation of individual sills. Concentric faults are believed to mark the edge of the depression. Wagner (1954) mapped the geology of Silver City dome in considerable detail and recognized a northward dipping, 120-ft-thick, lamproite sill exposed at the surface along the northeastern edge of the dome. The upper 40-50 ft of the sill weathers olive-brown and has a soft, clayey consistency in which only the phlogopite mica is recognizable. The weathered material has been mined by Micro-Lite LLC since 1982 from the exposed sill in an open-pit that measures about half a mile extending in an east- west direction. The bulk of the material, about 98%, is used as an additive in mineral supplements for cattle feed.

A single stage ball mill-cyclone circuit was extensively tested for its reactions to step changes in three controllable variables: feed rate, water to cyclones, and water to the ball mill. A series of carefully designed tests are to be carried out in order to determine relationships between the various ball mill and cyclone parameters. Cyclone overflow particle size distribution is to be continuously monitored during the tests using an ultrasonic device. Other circuit variables that are to be measured and recorded are feed rate, ball mill mass flow, cyclone feed and overflow densities, cyclone feed sump level, water flows, etc. Once the circuit performance is defined, two types of grinding circuit control systems will be evaluated: (a) mass flow-based; (b) particle size- based. Results obtained by each approach in terms of feed rate and cyclone overflow size distributions are discussed. The high sensitivity of continuous particle size measurements to grinding circuit disturbances is emphasized.

INTRODUCTION For overland conveyors of several kilometres length and as well as wide for conveyors designed for high mass flows, the cost for the conveyor belting share is 40% to 50% of the invested cost 173. The German Standard DIN 22101 is used for calculation and dimensioning of - conveyor belts and belt conveyor components. Developments in rubber technology and conveyor belt design required a revision of the standard released in 1982 121, which was published in August 2001 131. New research results and publications 16-9, 13-15] led to a better understanding of the material behaviour and their influences on conveyor belts. Test and calculation methods have been established to determine the most important parameters which are related to the performance of a conveyor belt line. These parameters are • The running resistance of the idlers • The indentation resistance of the belt • The dynamic splice efficiency • The distribution of belt load in the splices, transition zones and on pulleys. As a result, new rubber compounds with low indentation losses allow the use of reduced friction coefficients and thus lead to reduced power consumption, smaller drives and lower belt tensions. The deeper understanding of the flux of forces within belt splices led to both optimised splice design and optimised rubber compounds which significantly improve the dynamic splice efficiency. Therefore, in accordance with the standard, the benefits of these technologies and the better understanding of material behaviour allow a reduction of belt strength still maintaining sufficient safety factors. Thus engineers are enabled to calculate belt tensions more exactly and users are encouraged to pay more attention to starting and braking techniques. DETERMINATION OF DRIVE FORCE According to the DIN standards the resistance to motion generally has to be determined for each different section of the belt conveyor including upper and lower run separately. The necessary drive power P is calculated as [ ] with v as the conveying speed. The total of all resistances to motion of carry and return run can be determined as [ ] FHo and FHu are the primary resistances consisting of the running resistances of the idlers, the indentation resistance of the belt, the fulling of the conveyed material and the flexure of the belt. While indentation resistance and idler resistance are measurable, they have been deter- mined to be responsible for up to 70% of the primary resistances covered by FH. Further FN is the secondary resistance that covers, for example, the resistance of feeding points and scrapers. Fa are the total slope resistances and Fs is the total of all special resistances, resulting, for example, from belt steering devices. These three resistances should be neglected in the following discussion. For conveyors where a determination of the substantial parts of the resistances to motion is not possible, according to the new DIN standard [31 a determination of the drive power is acceptable by using the fictitious friction factor) [ ] In this formula the index i identifies the individual section of the conveyor, 1 is the length of the section and MR, MG and ML are the related masses of the idlers, the belt and the load in kg/m. The concept of a reusable underground nuclear test facility, named HEDEF, has been under study for some time. This rock chamber would have to be engineered to sustain the repeated mechanical and thermal shocks of internal explosions. In this paper, we summarize preconceptual studies performed in support of HEDEF, including -simple dynamic calculations for internally loaded tunnels, -outline of proof-of-concept tests of proposed reinforcement, - and initial dynamic testing of reinforcement components in an underground high explosive (HE) test.

INTRODUCTION Man is exposed to many agents which induce mutations in germ cells and/or cancer at work, at play, and at home. In this total mix of mutagenic and carcinogenic agents, how important are radon and its daughters? Before man moved into caves and other permanent dwellings, the principal mutagenic and carcinogenic agent to which he was exposed was natural background radiation--cosmic rays, radium and potassium-40 in his food, plus gamma rays and radon from the soil and rocks. When man moved into caves, captured fire, and began to preserve and store foods, his exposure to carcinogens and mutagens took a quantum leap. Carcinogens and mutagens appear to act in the same way, that is, by altering the DNA or nuclear proteins of cells. Most mutagens are carcinogens, and vice versa, so when I say mutagens from here on, I will be referring to both. The relationship of the two is emphasized by the fact that administration of a carcinogen to a group of animals not only increases cancer rates among the exposed animals, but also among their progeny (Tomatis 1979). Environmental Mutagens Smoke from man's fires, overheated foods, and foods preserved by smoking, resulted in ingestion and inhalation of many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons--many of which are mutagens. Caves and houses with tight windows and doors tend to collect the radon which is constantly emanating out of soil, rocks and concrete, so man's exposure to the radon daughter component of background radiation increased several fold. Preserving food by salting or pickling with material that contained nitrites and nitrates led to increased ingestion of nitrosamines, which are potent mutagens. When his grains and other foods were stored in slightly damp rooms, fungi or mold would grow on them. Several of these fungi are now known to produce very potent mutagens. The best known of these is aflatoxin B (Ramachandra 1979). It may seem strange that a living organism would produce a mutagen. One might think that it would scramble its own genetic heritage. The reason it does not is that it produces the mutagen in an inactive form. It can be activated only by an animal's enzyme systems after being eaten. When man moved into cities, the collective smoke from wood and coal fires further increased his exposure. That particular smoke has now mostly disappeared, but has been replaced by smoke from automobiles and industry. When man moved into the age of technology, his exposure to mutagens again increased dramatically. Many mutagenic chemicals, from benzene and beta naphthylamine to a long array of pesticides and tobacco products have been added to our environment. Excess deaths from cancer are now being observed among chemists in most industrialized nations. Mutagens are even found in much of our wine, beer, and whiskey (Keller 1980). Some of the chemical mutagens were widely used in food or in other commercial products before their potential was discovered. Striking examples of this is the original butter coloring agent and the polychlorinated biphenyls that have been widely used in brake fluids and electrical transformers. Large quantities of them have been discarded or disposed of in a careless manner--in such a way that many of them have contaminated our food, our ground water and air (Landrigan 1981). In this nation, with the help of several recent laws, we were just beginning to get control of the industrial chemical mutagens. With the relaxing of these laws that is currently going on, it appears that it will be many more years before we really bring chemical mutagens under control. Many nations have yet to come to grips with this problem. On top of this massive array of chemical mutagens we have now added radiation from many artificial sources. For most of us this means medical X-ray and fallout from nuclear weapons testing. Ionizing radiation is one of the most potent mutagens, so it has caught the public eye, and its contribution cannot be ignored. Fortunately, by the time we started using radioactive materials in quantity with the Manhattan Project, we had experience with radium and X-ray (some of it bad); we knew enough radiobiology and enough about methods of radiation protection so that most nuclear laboratories have had a phenomenal record of radiation safety. Radiation is one new technology with great potential for harm that has not exhibited that potential except for a few isolated situations like that of radium dial painters, uranium miners and atomic bomb victims. Uranium miners slipped into this list almost by accident. We could have protected our uranium miners just as well as we did the workers in nuclear laboratories; but we failed to do so. Why didn't we? The reason is simple. The Atomic Energy Commission was charged with protecting the health of their workers. They did not wait for a pile of bodies before they introduced controls. Congress appropriated the money, and taxpayers were willing to pay for the protection against radiation. Miners unfortunately did not work for the Atomic Energy Commission. Although mine operators were ignorant about radiation, the key item was that in the 1950s nobody was willing to pay the extra costs of adequate ventilation to control the high levels of radon and radon daughters in uranium mines. Control was not achieved until new laws and regulations were passed which made it compulsory. BIRTH DEFECTS AND CANCER

Because the Environmental Protection Agency has identified methane as a greenhouse gas, the importance of de gasification through gob wells has become more critical. It has been observed that the degree of methane emission is closely related to the geomechanical characteristics of coal bearing strata, roof, floor, and surrounding coal seams. Monthly production data from 250 gob wells were collected from the Warrior Basin in Alabama, and many interesting correlations were observed between methane production with longwall face width, face advancement rate, number of gob wells in a panel, and geologic columns. Extensive finite element analyses were performed to estimate the characteristics of the emission zone in an attempt to corroborate these findings. This paper describes an investigation for developing correlations between the geomechanical behavior of the methane emission zone with methane production.

This paper discusses laboratory evaluation of a tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA) developed by Michigan Technological University (MTU) under contract to the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus dilutes diesel exhaust and measures the concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), CO, C02, NO and NO2 at known dilution ratios. The EMA was evaluated by side-by-side comparison of its measurements with those by laboratory grade instruments. During the preliminary laboratory evaluation concentrations of DPM, CO and CO2 were measured. The concentrations of CO and CO2 measured by the EMA were usually within ±14 pct of laboratory-measured values for CO and ±20 pct for CO2. EMA DPM concentrations correlated well (r = 0.96) with the laboratory values, but were 29 pct lower on average. The CO and C02 differences were observed to be related to the method of calculating the EMAs' dilution ratio and the difference in DPM concentrations is attributed to thermophoretic and/or condensation losses related to the EMA's unheated sample probe. Preliminery analysis of data obtained with a heated sampling probe and modifications in the sampling procedures have indicated reduced variability in DPM and in the calculated dilution ratios.

Fluxes are used to promote pyrometallurgical processes that rely on adhesion (soldering or brazing) or fusion (gas and arc welding) to join metallic surfaces. In the adhesive processes, the metal surfaces to be joined are not melted; the join is formed using a filler metal with lower melting point than the base metal. Fusion welding involves use of heat in excess of the melting point of the base metal. The fused joint may be achieved either by simply fusing together metal surfaces brought in contact with each other or by introducing additional molten metal of similar composition to form a fused joint. ADHESIVE PROCESSES--SOLDERING AND BRAZING In order for molten filler metal, solder or braze, to spread in a manner that creates a successful join; the work surfaces on the base metal must be thoroughly cleansed. Fluxes remove stubborn oxide films and other surface contaminants, promote wetting of the work surfaces, add fluidity to the solder or braze, and enhance workability and ease of spreading. Brazing processes involve higher temperatures than those reached in soldering. Brazing fluxes, which must remain active and effective at the higher temperatures, differ from those employed in soldering. Some common fluxes used in adhesive processes are rosin for soldering tin and electrical connections, hydrochloric acid for use in soldering galvanized iron and other zinc surfaces, and borax for brazing. Soldering and brazing are similar processes, the primary difference being the temperature at which the joining operation is carried out. Soldered joints, produced with low-melting-point fillers (solders) that melt and flow at temperature less that 450°C (Althouse et al., 1988) can sustain loads of 1 to 1.7 MPa for extended periods of time (Anon., 1966). Brazing involves the use of filler materials with melting points commonly above 500°C and generally provides stronger joints than those obtained with solder. Both processes require local application of heat to melt and spread the filler so that the molten filler can wet (adhere to) the base metals by alloying and diffusion. Soldering Soldering is a means of joining metals by adhesion using a metallic bonding alloy as the filler, commonly a mixture of lead and tin. However, the adhesion of solder depends more on its ability to be keyed into minute surface irregularities than on alloying. The most familiar application is to provide and secure electrical connections. Soft solders can range from 1 to 70% tin with the remainder mostly lead. However, for general-purpose, soft-solder work, the alloy is commonly 50% lead-50% tin. Higher lead contents provide a wider range in the melting temperature and, for this reason, a 60% lead-40% tin alloy, which yields a mushy mixture, is used for wiped joints in lead sheet and pipe work. Conversely, 40% lead-60% tin alloys are used in soldering tin and other low- melting-point materials for which a narrower range of melting temperature is required. There are numerous other solder compositions such as tin-silver, 95% tin-5% silver and antimony-tin, 95% tin and 5% antimony (Carlin, Jr., 1992). Heat needed to melt and spread the solders is commonly provided by electrically heated, copper-tipped soldering irons or by means of torches; the solder is applied by hand, usually face-fed by means of wire. For wiped joints in plumbing and lead-cable splicing, the solder is manipulated with cloth pads. The molten solder wets the joint surfaces and is drawn, by surface tension, into minute fissures and capillary openings. Other applications involve use of induction heaters and furnaces with pre-shaped solder appropriately placed prior to fluxing and heating. In some processes, the joints are immersed in molten solder. Constituents and Role of Soldering Fluxes: Soldering fluxes generally fall into one of three categories: highly corrosive fluxes, intermediate fluxes, and noncorrosive fluxes. These same categories are sometimes designated inorganic, organic and rosin-based respectively (Althouse et al., 1988). Common constituents of each group are discussed briefly below. Corrosive Fluxes (Inorganic). Work with aluminum, magnesium, stainless steel, high alloy steel, aluminum bronzes, and silicon bronzes is carried out at temperatures in the upper portion of the range for solder operations. Soldering these materials requires use of highly active, corrosive fluxes to remove and prevent the formation of the especially stubborn, hard, oxide films that form on these materials upon exposure to the atmosphere. The corrosive fluxes consist of inorganic acids and salts that are applied either as pastes or dry. They are active at elevated temperatures and, since they remain active after the soldering is completed, must be completely removed. The main constituent of most corrosive fluxes is zinc chloride with a melting temperature well above the solidus temperature of most commercial tin-lead solders. It is made by the action of hydrochloric acid on zinc. When zinc chloride is used alone, un- melted particles of this corrosive salt get caught up in the joint and weaken it. For this reason, other inorganic salts such as ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) or sodium chloride (NaCl) may be added to lower the melting temperature. A mixture of zinc chloride and ammonium chloride is very effective because the excellent oxide reducing properties of ammonium chloride and the protective action of the molten zinc chloride combine to produce a fluxing action superior to that achieved when either is used alone. Optimization of blasting, crushing, and grinding operations is filled with challenges. One of the more difficult tasks is accurately sampling and determining the size distributions of blasted and crushed materials at a reasonable cost. The task is difficult because of the large size of fragments and the tonnage involved. However, the size distribution measurements are necessary for models that predict the performance of mine-through-mill operations. This paper is concerned with the use of video sampling for this task at National Steel Pellet Company's operation in Keewatin, Minnesota Data gathering, data analysis, model building, and mine-to-mill simulation are all described.

Next month, American Commercial Barge Line Company will begin moving coal from mines on the old Camp Breckinridge property in Western Kentucky to TVA's new 2600 MW steam plant at Cumberland City, Tennessee. By April of 1973, this movement will reach a level of 7,000,000 tons per year. TVA bought the coal rights to this property from the General Services Administration in 1965 for approximately $7 million. The reserve contains about 120 million tons of recoverable No.9 coal, and about the same recover-able amount of No. 11 coal. TVA then contracted through competitive bidding with Peabody Coal Company to mine the No.9 seam through two slope shafts. The mines are about 300 feet deep and are separated by the one major fault on this property. The mine portals are approximately 3-1/2 miles apart, with the northern portal being over nine miles distant from the Ohio River (see Figure No.1). In 1969 TV A took bids on alternate methods for transporting 120 million tons of coal to Cumberland City at seven million tons per year. These alter-natives included overland transportation to the Ohio River by rail or conveyor, water transportation from Union County, Kentucky to Cumberland City, and total transportation packages from Camp Breckinridge to Cumberland City. The latter could be a joint land/water package, or all land (rail). Ultimately American Commercial Barge Line was awarded an $88 million package transportation contract to convey the coal from Camp Breckinridge to Uniontown, Kentucky; to store it at Uniontown in a quantity sufficient to allow ratable delivery to the steam plant; and to barge from Uniontown to Cumberland City via the Ohio and Cumberland Rivers.

The mining industry of the World, and particularly of the United States, has made a complete reversal from underground to surface mining methods since the turn of the 20th Century. This has occurred even as average ore grades were decreasing and strip ratios rising. In the early 1900's there were over 100 underground mines producing from the three iron ranges of Minnesota -- today there are hone. Practically all of our coal prior to 1930 was mined underground; today over one-third is from surface operations and that percentage is increasing. Although world mining has hot changed to surface techniques as rapidly as has the U. S. Industry, the shift is escalating and will approach our figures shortly. A comparison of World and U. S. production figures are shown in Table 1, taken from the AIME Surface Mining volume, and the trend rates for the U. S. are depicted in Fig. 1.
