Pulmonary responses to coal mine dust exposure were investigated by analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage specimens from non-smoking coal miners (n-12, mean age-43 ± 2 years, mean underground exposure-17 ± 2 years) and from non-smoking normal volunteers (n-18, mean age-43 ± 2 years). Spirometric and diffusion capacity indices were monitored as part of a physical exam. Lavage was performed in a subsegment of the right middle lobe by instillation of 200 ml of warmed saline solution in 50 ml aliquots and recovery by gentle suction. Specimens were centrifuged at 500g for 5 minutes at 2°C. Total and differential cell counts were recorded. Secretion of oxidants measured by chemiluminescence, surface morphology (spreading and ruffling), and lymphocyte parameters were determined. Lavage fluid was analyzed for the presence and quantity of acute phase reactants and immunoglobulins. Pulmonary function measurements as well as recovered lavage volume, total lavagable cells, and differential cell counts were similar in both miners and controls. Both resting and phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated chemiluminescence were also similar in miners and controls. In contrast, particle-stimulated chemiluminescence was significantly decreased in the alveolar macrophages from the miners (48% of control values). Morphometric analysis of scanning electron micrographs indicate that phagocyte surface spreading was similar in miners and controls. However, surface ruffling was 127% greater in the miners compared to controls. Lymphocyte subpopulations were similar in miners and controls. Protein analysis of the lavage fluid revealed lower total protein content in the lavage fluid of miners. However, the concentration of albumin, IgG, and IgA were similar in miners and controls. We conclude that most indices were normal in underground miners working under the current dust standard of 2 mg/m3. The decrease in particlestimulated chemiluminescence and the increase in surface ruffling in miners may suggest the beginnings of particle overload and activation of the macrophages. In addition, a decrease in total protein was noted in lavage fluid from miners.

Rock characterization for geotechnical purposes using the microhardness technique is discussed in this paper. The concept of rock characterization and its steps are logically developed. The geotechnical properties should be functionally tethered to the technological problems for characterization. The overriding geotechnical concern is rock mass stability. The important factors in this respect are rock properties, structural discontinuities, ground water, field stress, temperature and technological factors. The rock properties are the primary factors and the other factors generally affect rock properties. Of the rock properties the strength and elastic properties can form a basis for rock characterization. The microhardness technique can provide these two properties. Study on coal shows that the microhardness impressions can be used for this purpose. On the basis of this study coals of all ranks can be divided into distinct geotechnical groups. The details of these are discussed in this paper.

I. Introduction The free market cash price of aluminium in the third quarter of 1985 is approximately $1000/tonne, well below the short as well as the long run marginal costs of production. The current disparity between marginal costs and price, as well as the pattern of prices since their high level in 1980, has led many economists to question whether prices are governed by the 'fundamentals'. Prices, some would argue, are the result of speculation; and speculation is irrational, little influenced by the fundamentals of the industry. The object of this paper is first to examine the relation between the fundamentals and price. A number of simple models are formulated and some empirical evidence is given to show that prices are not very different from costs. There are good reasons why costs and prices have fallen since 1980. Second, the connection is drawn between the fundamentals and speculation. To do this the concept of 'rational expectations' is defined and applied to a model of the aluminium industry. Then speculation is introduced into the model and the characteristics of the solution are examined. The object is to discover the new factors that determine prices and the basic change in the nature of the solution that is caused by speculation. 2. Prices and the Simple Supply-Demand Model Consider a simple model of the aluminium industry. Demand, D, is determined by economic activity, A, given exogenously, and inversely by the price, P. Supply, Q, is determined by the inverse of the rnarginal cost curve, and so varies inversely with exogenous factor costs, C, and directly with price. Price is determined by the equality of supply and demand. Given the equilibrium level of demand, price in this model is equal to the rnarginal cost of producing the required level of demand, P = MC (Dl. Algebraically, [ ] How well does this simple model explain the change in prices during the last five years? Table I shows the LME cash price and the estimated marginal cost of producing consumption during the second quarters of 1980 through 1985. The figures in the table show that price and the marginal cost of supplying demand both fell between 1980 and 1982, rose in 1983 and by 1985 had fallen again. Only in 1984 is the direction of change different. And during the 1980 to 1985 period, marginal costs fell by approximately $560/tonne while the LME cash price fell by $678/tonne. There is a correspondence between the fundamentals of cost and price over most of the individual years and the period as a whole.

Adequate ventilation is a main concern if Lockerby Mine near Sudbury is to be expended. This study investigate a two-fold problem: (1) the new pressure and volume requirements of the main fans due to the theoretical. deepening of the mine, and (2) the effect of the natural ventilation pressure on the main fans. Field data was analyzed with the aid of a newly developed network simulation program, VNETPC Version 3. 0. The density change throughout the mine is accounted for by performing all computations at reference density. Results of the investigation indicate that the existing fan system must be supported by three to five additional underground fans as well, the density effect is significant. Laboratory tests were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the respirable dust reduction effectiveness of and interaction between face airflow and water sprays for a continuous miner. Exhausting face ventilation was varied from 3,000 to 9,000 cfm (1.42 to 4.25 m3/sec). Spray-water-flow was varied from 15 to 35 gpm (0.057 to 0.132 m3/min), while nozzle operating pressure was varied from 80 to 200 psi (5.62 to 14.06 kg/cm2). Results from gravimetric dust samples indicated that airflow had the greatest individual impact on reducing dust levels, with return and operator concentrations reduced by as much as 57% and 99%, respectively. Interactions between dust control parameters were found to be significant. Often, these interactions defined a level of application for a control parameter where further increases in that parameter failed to produce additional reductions in dust concentrations. In several cases, increases in a control parameter resulted in higher dust levels at the operator's location. These higher dust levels were attributed to additional rollback and/or airflow turbulence. Regression modeling indicated that increases in airflow to 8,400 cfm (3.96 m3/sec), water flow to 25 gpm (0.095 m3/min), and water pressure to 140 psi (9.84 kg/cm2) typically were beneficial at the operator and return sampling locations.

Zimbabwe The Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in south central Africa and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The country is land-locked, bounded on the north by Zambia, on the south by the Republic of South Africa, on the east by Mozambique and on the southwest by Botswana. Nearly 400,000 sq km in area, Zimbabwe is bigger than both France and Spain and nearly three times the size of England. The outstanding physical feature is the central plateau, known as the highveld, which is about 650 km long and 80 km wide at an elevation of +1,200 m, and on which the Jena Mines is located. Because of its elevation and inland position, Zimbabwe's climate is temperate, generally drier and cooler than is normally expected in the tropics. Zimbabwe's population is in excess of 10 million. English is the official language, with Ndebele and Shona being the main ethnic languages. About one million people live in Greater Harare, the capital city. The basic unit of currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, which has depreciated substantially over the past few years. Currently (November, 1995), the exchange rate is $US 1.00 = $Zim 9.00, compared with $US 1 .OO = $Zim 2.50 in 1991. Project Area The Jena Mines Complex is situated in central Zimbabwe (Figure 1), in the Silobela area of the lower Gweru River valley. The mine site is 270 km from Harare by paved and gravel road. The Jena Mines property consists of a single rectangular (8 km by 5 km) shaped mining lease with an area of approximately 40 sq km (Figure 2). Annual average precipitation is 720 mm falling in the summer months between October and April. Mean daily maximum temperature is 24°C in October and mean minimum is 14°C in July. The southern parts of Zimbabwe have experienced drought conditions over the past four years which has affected water and power supplies. The countryside in the Jena area is generally low relief with a gentle slope to the northwest. The mine site topography is flat with an average elevation of 1,210 m. Zimbabwe Mining Industry Zimbabwe has a long mining tradition, particularly for gold. In the 1,200 years preceding European colonization, it is estimated that about 4,000 ancient mines produced between 600 and 800 tonnes of gold. Since the turn of the century more than 1,700 tonnes of gold have been produced. An excellent infrastructure has developed to support the mining industry. This includes a well- maintained system of paved roads, railway links to major mining areas, an electricity grid covering most of the country, and numerous industries manufacturing a wide range of mining supplies. Jena History The claims in the Jena Mines area are among the earliest registered in Zimbabwe. The gold potential was easily recognized because of extensive ancient (pre-European) workings. European trading beads from the 14th Century have been recovered from anthills in the mine area. Development of the Jena Mines commenced in 1898 and several mines have operated intermittently over the past 90 years. The starting powders' physicochemical properties and consistency are essential for technical ceramic products to meet their performance specifications. The need for finer and more consistent powders has opened new technologies for synthesizing powders from atoms and molecules. However, submicron and near-micron powders obtained from conventional comminution and classification techniques are still competitive. This paper shows several examples from electronic ceramic applications of how we can use powder characteristics for micromanaging by design the ceramic properties such as the green and fired densities, slurry rheology, shrinkage during sintering, and the microstructure of the sintered bodies. The cross-disciplinary nature of the technology requires that the researcher not only should have a firm grip on the fundamentals of one or more disciplines, but also should be generally aware of the intricacies of other disciplines as well.

The factors which control the dewatering of fine coal by gravity/centrifugal drainage and by gas displacement (vacuum/hyperbaric filtration) are evaluated. A generalized model is presented and used to describe dewatering kinetics and to establish dewatering limits. Applications to the design of dewatering systems for fine coal dewatering are discussed.

It is possible to beneficiate low-grade phosphate ore slimes containing predominantly siliceous gangue by a combined selective flocculation-flotation scheme using commercially available reagents. The presence of clays, in particular, montmorillonite and attapulgite, has a disastrous effect on the efficiency of separation. Suitable remedies to overcome this problem are not yet available. Intensive R&D efforts are required in the areas of the design and synthesis of specific reagents, the effect of particle size, and the design of appropriate process equipment to carry out flocculation and flotation of slimes.

The possibility of increasing the efficiency of mineral processing plants by means of computer control has prompted metallurgists to examine their flowsheets more critically in order to develop practical control strategies. Control schemes in use to date generally rely on the automation of traditional and previously manually regulated control loops, for instance the addition of reagents to maintain a constant assay or a constant pH. This approach is predicated on the availability of well-established primary sensors such as pH electrodes or on-stream analyzers. Noranda Research Centre, in cooperation with Noranda Group concentrators, has developed a froth level monitor and a pulp density meter susceptible of application in this type of control. Although some of the basic principles on which they are based have been known for some time, their incorporation into the design of reliable, direct-reading instruments which can be interfaced with a computer, is be-lieved to be novel*.

INTRODUCTION The widespread use of desktop computers by an ever increasing number of people, both for personal and for business and government uses, has brought public attention to surprising stories about computer abuse. Before the advent of microcomputers in the information processing environment, hundreds of amazing misdeeds involving large computers had already been reported, most of them perpetrated by highly skilled professionals. The undreamed enlarging of microcomputer potential has steadily posed a major threat to complex mainframe computing systems, as joyful teenagers become familiar with the habit of hacking around someone else's large processing system, by means of makeshift phone communication networks, based on their intended homework for personal computers -- for the sheer fun of it. Now, the never ending capacity and speed improvement of commercially available micros has given rise to a brand new concern for society: the hazards of processing sensitive information in the powerful, but still unsafe microcomputer itself, whether or not linked to other micros or mainframe networks. This paper deals with some aspects of the problems and presents some practical hints as to enhance protection and minimize risks to sensitive and secretive information when processed on microcomputers. The physical considerations of computer security and pertinent safety precautions will not be discussed, because while essentially relevant to information protection, recommendations are well defined by processing resources suppliers and their importance is more widely recognized by users in general. Definitions and Classifications. The following definitions and classifications will be considered in this report: Information Assets: Any knowledge or information processing, storing or conveying device displayed in one's environment. It consists of two main categories: INFORMATION RESOURCES: End user's application data wherever recorded. PROCESSING RESOURCES: EDP skilled user's hardware, software, peripherals, magnetic media, communication devices, auxiliary equipment, supplies and related operational procedures. Information Protection: In a broad sense this is the set of necessary procedures to assure to the legitimate user the effective control of the operation and allow modifications of information assets, so that their physical or cognitive integrity be preserved or any unexpected loss minimized inspite of accidental occurrences or intentional actions. Classification Processes: Commonly two classification processes are used to define key terms in information protection: SENSITIVE CLASSIFICATION: Pre-defined standards for assessing the vulnerability to losses due to lack of proper processing continuity if information is destroyed, disclosed, secluded, or misused. SECRECY CLASSIFICATION: A spectrum of degrees as to the expectancy of holding exclusiveness of unique information whose destruction, disclosure, seclusion or misuse will cause a negative impact on the legitimate holder environment. Sensitive Information: Any knowledge whose destruction. disclosure. seclusion or misuse - - - implies losses to its legitimate holder. The Falcon concentrator is capable of separating minerals in fine size classes based on their differential density. Separation of mineral particles depends upon the fluid flow characteristics and relative movement of particles in a fluid. In the present study, a fluid flow characteristic inside the Falcon concentrator was established through experimentation and modeling. The Falcon concentrator has two fluid entry points: (a) Fluid entering through gravity assisted feeding system and (b) Fluid entering through the fluidized hole on the concentrator wall. In order to identify the role of fluid entering the concentrator, a tracer was injected into the system. As per the tracer based experimentation, it was established that fluid entering through the gravity based feeding system is responsible for thin flowing film formation in the stratification zone where particles are stratified based on their relative density. The momentum balance and continuity equations were simplified for a high centrifugal force field, and the fluid velocity profile was estimated inside the thin flowing film. Estimated fluid flow profiles will help to simulate the particle trajectories inside the Falcon concentrator. The influence of rotational speed, fluid flow rate, and cone angle on the fluid velocity profile were investigated. Fluid thickness over the concentrator wall is also estimated, and it is typically of the order of ~150–200 μm.

The conversion of nickel and cobalt to the water-soluble sulphates forms the basis of some of the many methods of recovering these metals from their oxide and silicate ores. The applicability of these sulphation processes to a range of Australian oxidized ores is discussed. The chemical and hence mineralogical composition of the ores is shown to have a major influence on the degree of nickel and cobalt extraction. Different sulphation processes are compared, taking into account the influence of ore composition, and considering effects on reagent consumption and on subsequent metal recovery processes.

The Bureau cf Mines, U.S. Department of the Intericr, is investigating biolcgical and chemical deccntaminaticn of cyanide- containing leachates and residues. Biolcgical cyanide cxidaticn, using bacteria isolated from a precious metals tailings pond, destroyed >85 pct of the cyanide in several prccessing solutions containing up tc 280 ppm CN. Reaction time varied from about 4.5 hr in a trickling reactor using quartz as a bacterial substrate to 2 mo in unagitated, covered flasks. Chemical techniques were used to destroy the remaining complexed cyanide down to 1 ppm. Exploratory tests were also conducted using spent ore from heap leach operations as the bacterial substrate to determine if biological cyanide oxidation could be used to destroy the residual cyanide in spent heaps.

This paper examines the interaction problems of multiple seam mining by combining underground investigation, laboratory testings, and numerical modeling. One case of multiple seam interaction that occurred recently in West Virginia was carefully studied. Causes for the interaction problems were identified and the corresponding mining recommendations were proposed. The principle of pillar columnization and the effect of a remnant pillar on mining operations in the underlying and over- lying seams were also carefully examined. Considerable attention was given to the effect the pillar size, the pillar width, the coal stiffness, the extraction ratio, the degree of inhomogeneity in the interburden, the overburden thickness, the mechanical properties of the interburden rocks, the strata inclination, the interburden thickness, and the in-situ horizontal stresses have on the pillar load transfer mechanism.

The Deep Leg Flotation Cell was developed to solve a problem which confronted the Smith-Douglass Company on moving from one mining area to another. Poor recovery and, to some extent, inferior concentrate grade were encountered in the silica flota¬tion circuit. This was believed due to the softness of the phosphate which caused it to form slime. In view of the urgency of the matter, the problem was attacked from two angles. The first involved the development of a flotation cell which would not create slime and the second, a new or improved reagent for floating silica from phosphate rock which would be less sensitive to slime than reagents currently in use.

Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of respirable coal mine dust causes coal workers’ pneumoconiosis and silicosis. Underground coal mine roof bolter operators are more prone to elevated exposure to coal and silica dust. The canopy air curtain (CAC) was developed by NIOSH to protect roof bolter operators from the exposure. The CAC supplies filtered air over the breathing zone of the operator. This dilutes the high coal dust concentrations and provides for an impenetrable air curtain. Many studies have been carried out to improve CAC efficiency. However, field test has shown variable dust control efficiencies indicating rooms to further improve due to the nonuniform airflow distribution across the plenum and ineffective perimeter flow. This study therefore redesigns the CAC with optimized flow distribution that effectively protects roof bolters from coal dust exposures. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are used to optimize the uniformity of airflow distribution across the plenum to achieve the best possible uniformity. A lab experiment validates the CFD model and confirms the ability of this design to reduce floor dust pickup, prevent external wind infiltration, and offer an improved protection efficiency

An in-mine seismic technique for detecting faults has been tested in a Western U.S. coal mine. This technique has been used extensively in the U. K. to help guide longwall mining operations. Explosives detonated on the face of a seam generate sound waves which propagate into the seam. Reflections from faults are picked up by sensors on the same face. Computer processing is then used to determine the fault locations. A known fault was successfully located in this test. Modifications to the U. K. procedures were required for the relatively thicker roan and pillar mines common in the Western U. S.
