Previous studies on semi-soluble minerals such as calcite (1) and apatite(2) and sparingly soluble minerals such as quartz (3,4) have given evidence for significant changes in their electrokinetic properties as a function of aging time. Such changes are relevant to mineral processing operations where the crushed ore particles might not have yet reached equili¬brium with the water that it is in contact with. In order that these changes be studied under controlled experimental conditions for long periods unattended or with fairly less intermittant attention, a streaming potential apparatus with an automatic streaming system was constructed. Also, a new streaming potential cell was incorporated into the system so that the effect of temperature, a variable coming into increasing usage in mineral processing operations(5), could also be studied. Conventional streaming cells(6) cannot be safely employed to conduct studies as a function of temperature since they have many glass joints that are prone to leakage, parti¬cularly under pressure, in the course of an experiment. This paper describes the new apparatus and some typical results that have been obtained with it far temperature effects.

A theoretical radiation mine model, suitable for underground uranium nines, has been investigated. In this model, the rate of ventilation and/or the radon (thoron) gas emanation from mine walls are time-dependent. Several cases of practical interest have been investigated including sinusoidal, linear, exponential, stepwise, or a combination of two or more of the above. Analytical solutions were obtained for the time-dependent radon (thoron) gas emanation rate. However, because of the extreme analytical complexity of the solutions corresponding to the time-dependent ventilation rate case, numerical solutions were found using a special Runge-Kutta procedure and the Hamming's modified predictor-corrector method for the solution of linear initial-value problems. The mine model makes provisions for losses of radioactivity, other than by ventilation and radioactive decay, by, say, plate-out on mine walls, and by other mechanisms. Radioactivity data, i.e., radon, thoron, and their progeny. obtained with the above mine model for a number of ventilation and emanation conditions, are presented. Experimental data obtained in an inactive stope of an underground uranium mine for a time-dependent air flow case are shown. Air flow conditions (ventilation rate) were determined by tracer gas techniques using SF6.

The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel Project in Toronto extends approximately 10.5 km from Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant west under Lake Shore Boulevard, north under Bayview Avenue and east through the Don River park area to the Coxwell Ravine Park. This project includes the installation of five intake shafts connected by 10.5 km of 6.3 m internal diameter tunnel and eleven drop shafts and vent shafts, connected to the tunnel by a series of adits. During the excavation of one of five intake shafts (20 m in diameter and 52 m deep), significant volumes of free phase oil and hydrocarbons were encountered. Due to the heavy inflows of the contaminants, excavation was stopped at the transition depth. The initial support of excavation needed to be redesigned, shaft had to be backfilled with CDF and installation of deeper secant piles are in progress to cut off contaminants. This paper outlines the initial plan for excavation as well as the design changes to the plan. The current status of the shaft excavation and lessons learned will be discussed.

The liberation and exposure of valuable mineral grains in ore particles are of significant importance in understanding the efficiency of flotation separations. A flotation feed sample from the Kensington concentrator was scanned by micro Xray computed tomography (micro-XCT), to determine the liberation and exposure of auriferous pyrite grains. The analysis results suggest a satisfying extent of liberation for particle sizes smaller than 212 μm. Theoretical flotation recovery of pyrite for selected particle size fractions was predicted from the three-dimensional liberation and exposure analysis. The plant flotation tail was also characterized by micro-XCT to identify liberated and partially liberated pyrite particles that might not be collected into the concentrate. However, liberation analysis of the tail sample revealed that the majority of liberated pyrite was recovered in the plant flotation circuit. Trainable Weka, a machine learning segmentation approach, was compared with the Watershed thresholding segmentation for the 106 × 45 μm particle size fraction scanned at a voxel size of 1.85 μm. Improved segmentation of small particles was found using the machine learning method.

The present paper attempts to characterize the breakage properties of a brittle rock, quartz, at different size fractions when compressed at various loads in a confined piston die.  This is to understand the interaction between the various parameters affecting the breakage behavior of a brittle solid in a confined zone. Application of the results may lead to improving the energy efficiency in the size-reduction units, which use compression as the main stressing force.

INTRODUCTION In a bed of fine coal, water can be found in the interstices created by the particle surfaces and in the pores within the coal particles. The extent of the interstices voidage is obviously a function of the particle sizes and morphologies, as shown by the fact that the bulk density of coarse coal is greater than that of fine coal. After drainage, the voids can be completely or partially filled. By increasing the suction pressure across the bed, as is done in vacuum filtering, the quantity of water in the voids can be reduced. But eventually the increased suction pressure has little influence on the moisture reduction. In addition, the moisture in the pore structure of the coal is unaffected by the mechanical removal of the moisture in the interstices. When this condition is reached, the total moisture content of the coal can only be reduced further by evaporating the water. Evaporative drying is done for one or more of the following reasons: 1. To avoid freezing difficulties and to facilitate handling during shipment, storage, and transfer to the points of utilization. 2. To reduce the heat loss due to evaporation of the moisture from the coal during the combustion process, thus increasing heating efficiency. 3. To decrease transportation costs. The heating value of coal is equally improved for each percentage point reduction in the noncombustibles in coal. It is estimated that a reduction of 1%22 in the total moisture in the coal increases the thermal efficiency of the heat-raising process by about 0. Some coal buyers consider 1 % moisture content to be the equivalent of a 4% ash content.23 It is important to avoid drying the coal to too low a moisture level, since the complete removal of surface moisture to produce a bone dry product can result in a serious dust, wind lost, and safety problem. Surface moisture con- tents of 3% or less for shipped coal are not uncommon. However, the evaporatively dried coal may be lower, Y, to 1%, since the mechanically dewatered coal may be higher. Evaporatively dried coal can be treated (sprayed) with chemicals in order to control the dustiness and any freezing difficulties, thereby providing the producer with more operational flexibility. The evaporative drying of coal is essentially a process of simultaneous transfer of energy, usually in the form of heat, and water, in the form of vapor, from the coal. In order to remove the undesired moisture, it is necessary to raise the temperature of the water from the entering temperature of the feed stream, TF, to the boiling point of the water (usually taken as 212"F), vaporize

"The mining industry suffers from a number of incorrect perceptions, one of which is that it is an outdated industry that has not changed for hundreds of years. But the truth of the matter is that mining is a vibrant, highly complex industry that not only employs highly skilled and educated professionals but is also often on the cutting edge of technology. It is an industry with projects that are ever-evolving and among the most challenging engineering feats in the world.Take for instance the U.S. 53 Highway Relocation project in Virginia, MN. While more of a civil engineering job than a traditional mining project, it is still a complex engineering challenge taking place in a mining environment that has called on the skills of eight state agencies, three federal agencies, a host of contractors and many consultants, including many from the local mining industry in the Iron Range of Minnesota.In 1960, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) constructed U.S, Highway 53 on a private easement owned by US Steel that cut across a massive taconite deposit. MnDOT constructed the highway with the agreement that if the highway needed to be moved to access the taconite deposit before 1987, US Steel would foot the bill. And if the move was required after 1987, the responsibility would fall to MnDOT. In 2010, MnDOT received the notice that the highway would have to move as property owner United Taconite planned to access the ore, setting in motion one of the greatest engineering challenges, and the highest risk project, in the history of the states’ transportation department.Pat Huston, U.S. Highway 53 Relocation project manager, opened the 90th SME Minnesota Section Conference in Duluth, MN on April 19 with a presentation about the project that includes 5 km (3.2 miles) of fourlane highway and a new 345-m (1,132-ft) bridge that will be the tallest in Minnesota when it is completed later this year.“This project was not business as usual,” Huston told the packed crowd. “Highway 53 connects Canada and the Iron Range to Duluth and Lake Superior. The principals of McCabe Industrial Minerals, Inc., have been involved in the mining, processing, and marketing of nonmetallic minerals for more than 40 years. In addition to marketing nonmetallic minerals produced by other companies, McCabe Minerals owns and operates three plants that produce headlap-roofing granules, with 25 employees and annual sales approaching $6 million. During its 22 years of operation, the company has developed many different markets, and a list of factors that is used in making our marketing and feasibility studies. These criteria (Table 1) are used extensively by the company in all of its projects, and we present this and other data about the company in this brief report. The 43rd Annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser, sponsored by the Mining and Minerals Education Foundation (MMEF), will be held Dec. 6 in Tucson, AZ. Each year, the MMEF honors a slate of individuals and companies who have made notable contributions to the advancement of the mining industry. This year’s distinguished nominees are: Kathleen L. Quirk, president and chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors of Freeport-McMoRan Inc. is the 2025 Hall of Fame Inductee. Quirk joined Freeport in 1989 and had responsibility for a broad range of corporate functions, including tax, investor relations, corporate development and treasury before being named chief financial officer in 2003. She was named president of Freeport in 2021 and became a member of the board of directors in 2023. As a senior member of the company’s executive team for more than 20 years, she has been instrumental in Freeport’s strategic planning and execution of company goals. During that period, Quirk was named Best CFO in Metals and Mining by Institutional Investor Research magazine on numerous occasions. She holds a bachelor of science in accounting from Louisiana State University.

Calcium carbonate is one of the most widely used industrial minerals in applications like cement, lime, agriculture, power plant fluegas desulfurization (FGD) and construction aggregates. Most applications are generally high-volume and low value ($9/t or $10/st) or less free-on-board (f.o.b.) mine site) uses of this material. Specialty uses of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) are typically referred to as ?performance mineral? or ?extender and ?ller? applications. Primary specialty markets for GCC include paper and plastics as well as a number of construction applications including joint compounds, carpet backing, paint, and adhesives, caulks and sealants (ACS). Other important specialty applications for GCC include rubber, food and personal care products. A new and growing application for GCC is in nonwoven fabrics, where this mineral replaces a small percentage of the polymer. Typical specialty applications for GCC are color sensitive and require extremely white/bright materials. Although deposits of limestone are located in most states, high brightness resources are relatively rare and controlled by a limited group of suppliers.

The five tunnel contracts of Milwaukee Northeast Side Relief Sewer System are about 80 percent complete. The tunnels are all excavated for 1.9 meter (6'-0") finish diameter sewers in a variable rock, mixed face, and glacial soil environment. Different contracts were let under two primary types of specifications, performance and prescriptive, which treated aspects of construction, such as primary ground support and groundwater control, differently. Interfacing of design and construction through field personnel allowed the needs of all parties to be met and resulted in savings in time and money to the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD). Interfacing, cooperation and risk sharing allowed resolution of problems such as line and grade variations and potential differing site conditions. It also allowed the parties to pursue constructive changes to construction activities. Thus on one contract prescribed use of compressed air was eliminated, but migration of fines into the tunnels was stopped with filter fabric. Use of an expensive primary support system was dropped, but concern about deterioration of lagging was alleviated by use of special materials.

Beam theory is a proxy for the behavior of intact, deforming roof strata above underground openings. Strong, stiff, intact strata have the ability to store significant strain energy when underground openings have large spans, as is typical of longwall operations. When strata fail, they may release some or all of this strain energy. Released energy is partitioned between fracture, thermal and seismic energy. The tensile failure surface in simply supported beams is predicted to be free of shear stress. This prediction and the kinematic inability of crack slip during fracture make significant dissipation of energy by friction unlikely.  In this study, the failure energy partitioning of specimens from the Nugget Sandstone formation is examined. Tensile fractures in specimens were induced using three-point loading tests. Elastic waves emanating from fracture events were recorded using an array of accelerometers. Accelerometers were placed within two crack lengths of the fracture surface, and the acceleration records are similar to strong motion seismic records. Spectral analysis was performed and used to develop synthetic, well-behaved, acceleration signals. Synthetic velocity signals were used to estimate radiated seismic energy generated by fracture. These estimates of radiated seismic energy demonstrate a potential means to constrain the minimum seismic partition. Fracture testing was performed on additional samples to estimate the fracture toughness of the sandstone. Synthesis of this data demonstrates a potential means to constrain a maximum seismic partition. Bounding the seismic partition for this type of fracture event could aid the detection and evaluation of seismicity emanating from longwall operations. Having better information about the location and magnitude of mining induced seismicity within longwall overburdens could lead to better understanding of extraction sequencing and rock behavior in general. These energy estimates also support the hypothesis that dissipation of thermal energy by friction is small in bending tensile failure.

Oxidized coals are difficult to float. Therefore, in this paper, a special flotation procedure was investigated for upgrading this type of coal. The procedure is called direct contact flotation. It relies on mixing dry coal either with pure (anhydrous) flotation reagent(s) or microemulsion. By applying the new direct contact flotation procedure, a coal yield reaching > 95% using anhydrous flotation reagents was achieved, but with relatively high consumption of reagents (up to 30 g/kg). This high reagent consumption may be attributed to the fines included in the flotation feed (100% less than 0.5 mm, with 40% less than 75 µm). On the other hand, the clean coal yield was found to be approximately 88% when mixing dry oxidized coal with microemulsion droplets from dodecane and dodecyl tetra (ethylene glycol) ether (C12E4) in water at a total reagent dosage of 10 g/kg. The direct contact of coal either with unhydrous reagents or microemulsion also provided a high flotation selectivity.

These errors were discovered during a recent study in which a computer program for mine hoist rope selection was developed (Lineberry and Mateer, 1988). In order of increasing gravity: Captions for Figs. 3 and 4 are transposed. • Purported to be a more accurate method of rope selection than the process of successive approximation, the direct method assumes linearity between a given rope's minimum breaking strength, T, and unit rope weight, Wv. Because of the sensitive location of the constant, K, in equation (8) for breaking strength, the significance of this nonlinearity is magnified. For a typical 6 x 37 class fiber core wire rope (Wire Rope Corp. of America, 1985), K actually varies from 43,650 to 52,190, depending upon rope diameter. Although the direct solution permits a rapid selection of hoist rope, an indirect (iterative) solution procedure is favored because of its im¬proved accuracy and ease of computerization. • Equation (8) for minimum breaking strength is in error. In an effort to advance the science underlying ground control engineering, researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are frequently involved in field studies at collaborating mines. Often, these field studies involve visiting the mine site, instrumentation installation, and data acquisition. Each of these aspects involve potential risks to NIOSH employees. As an organization whose mission it is to promote the health and safety of mine workers, the health and safety of our workforce is paramount. This paper provides documentation of the best practices followed by NIOSH employees who are tasked with visiting and conducting work at underground and surface mines. This includes Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved training, mine site specific training, and hazards associated with all aspects of mining that could be encountered by the employee. Additionally, this paper details best practices associated specifically with instrumentation installation including the mitigation of hazards associated with the proper equipment handling, drilling, and the mine environment. The information showcased in this paper can be used as considerations for industry practitioners such as mine operators, consultants, and academic researchers engaged in the installation of instrumentation in the field. Furthermore, the best practices detailed in this paper can be used as a foundation for agreements made between mine operators and researchers to ensure safety procedures will be followed while on mine property. This will result in enhanced safety of both researchers involved in field studies as well as mine employees tasked with assisting and accompanying those researchers.

In its largest product launch in company history, Cummins Engines welcomed more than 200 customers, vendors and media to witness the unveiling of its new QSK95 engine at its Seymour Engine Plant in Seymour, IN on Nov. 1. It took the efforts of 150 engineers to design the QSK95 and more than $100 million in investments to establish a new production line and test facility at Cummins? Seymour Engine plant. The result of these efforts is a new platform of engines that Cummins says will provide as much as 2,983 kW (4,000 hp) and will be the most powerful, high-speed diesel engine ever built.

The Santa Fe Railway serves the dominant U. S. potash producing region which is centered at Carlsbad, NM. This rail system extends over 12,000 miles stretching from Chicago to the Texas Gulf Coast to the state of California. (see Figure 1) Since Carlsbad mining operations began in the 1930?s, Santa Fe has been transporting potash to many of the important grain producing areas of the country and to the major ports in Texas and California. Santa Fe has maintained a close relationship with the potash companies and has adopted a marketing philosophy of attempting to maximize opportunities for the Carlsbad producers where it is mutually beneficial. Potash has been an important commodity for the Santa Fe. It accounted for 8% of our revenue in 1965 and 3% in 1984. In the 1950?s, Carlsbad became the second largest revenue producing point on the Santa Fe. But this prominent position has diminished as ore reserves became depleted, imports flooded the U. S. market, and truck transportation developed.

"Keep calm and carry on mining. That has long been the conventional wisdom in the mining industry, a largely cyclical one that has weathered roller-coaster booms and busts. But in the years from 2002 to 2016, an unprecedented steep rise in commodities prices that lasted a decade and then took a sharp turn downward had made it hard for gold and silver miners to stay the course.“The last 15 years highlighted some of the structural and inherent challenges that our industry has, from product price uncertainty to long lead times to the capital intensity of our business,” said Mitchell Krebs, president and chief executive officer of Coeur Mining, who was the luncheon speaker at the American Exploration & Mining Association’s 122nd Annual Meeting held Dec. 5-9, 2016, in Reno, NV.Looking back, Krebs said, “We were given this enormous gift of a commodities super cycle, and the industry kind of blew the opportunity.” While gold prices rose 319 percent and silver prices rose more than 200 percent over the 2002 to 2016 period, the XAU index of 30 gold and silver mining companies’ stock prices went up by only 20 percent.Entering 2016, precious-metals prices have made a comeback, with gold rallying strongly from a six-year low at the start of the year. This time, the industry is ready. Companies are leaner and meaner, with lower costs, reduced debt and an increased focus on higher grades and quality ounces. Although opportunities were missed in the past, the industry has got its act together and is now well positioned to take advantage of a price upswing and even to show profits when prices fall, as they did in August 2016, pushed down by a strong dollar."
