Sporosarcina ureae was able to grow in the presence of tip to 10-ppm L-asparagine complexed gold. However, 10 ppm Au3+ was found to be highly toxic to Sporosarcina ureae, killing 109 bacteria/mL within a few seconds. To compare the effects of these responses on gold mobility, an in vitro bacterial biofilm model was developed to examine the interaction be¬tween Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold or L-asparagine gold complexes in gravity fed columns. The immobilization of ionic gold was between 80% and 90% over a period of one week. But, as the available cellular reactive sites became saturated, immobilization decreased to 14% within two weeks. In the L¬asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization in the cytoplasm occurred at a high rate (80% to 90%) throughout the experi¬ment, with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae. The bacterial immobilization and detoxification of L-asparagine¬complexed ionic gold was associated with a low molecular weight, i.e, <5,000 dalton (atomic mass unit), intracellular protein fraction. This peptide-complexed gold would allow for the continued biogeochemical cycling of gold under ambient (<100°C) surface or near-surface conditions.

The Roreto Tunnel is a shallow, twin-bore, road tunnel on the connection between the A6 and the A21 motorway in NW Italy. The challenges faced the design and construction of this tunnel derive from 1) the presence of groundwater, both phreatic and artesian; 2) excavation in loose and/or little cohesive materials; 3) excavation in cohesive materials containing water-saturated, sand lenses; and 4) surface constraints due to the urban environment. In this paper, these problems are examined and the rationale led to the optimum design choices and construction solutions explained. The experience should be useful to others when tunneling in similar situations.

The CANMET diesel-related work, carried out in cooperation with the Canadian mining industry, resulted in the identification of several useful R/D studies. One such study was the development of a dash-mounted alarm signal system to indicate overexposure of production LHD diesel vehicle operators to toxic contaminants in a mine environment. The resulting instrument has been called the [CO2 Exposure Meter]. This meter is particularly applicable to LHD machines because previous investigations have indicated that operators of LHDs and some haulage truck drivers are exposed to up to 200% of the contaminant concentrations measured in the general mine return air. This paper describes the development of the system which continuously monitors and displays the operator&apos;s exposure to diesel pollutants, and indicates an overexposure by an alarm light. The overexposure limits are preset by mine personnel based on carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements, which in turn are related to simultaneous spot respirable combustible dust (RCD) measurements (or to Air Quality Indices - AQI, if available). The CO2 settings are, in general, related to the engine/exhaust treatment selections, vehicle duty cycle and local ventilation rates and efficiency. The system continuously displays one of three lights: green for underexposure, yellow for caution, and red for overexposure. Overexposure can occur for several reasons, such as: reduced ventilation, malfunction of the diesel vehicle, and excessive airborne contaminants. The paper confirms satisfactory operation of the system in a laboratory-simulated mine environment, as well as in field trials.

Slags generated by the ferrous metals industry can he used to produce high-value ceramic materials. The properties of these ceramics can be controlled by judicious choices of composition, additives, and processing parameters. Standard methods of materials handling, such as comminution and mixing, are as applicable to slag as to any other mineralogic raw material. In this study, foundry slag was ground, homogenized, melted, and, formed to produce a glass, and then heat treated to crystallize it into a high-strength glass-ceramic. The product shows promise as a low-cost, wear-resistant tile material that (-an he custom cast. This and similar materials made from slags and natural rocks are candidates for use as construction materials, acid-resistant piping, shock-resistant sheathing, rot-proof pilings, and, when foamed, even as pontoons.

"The new metro line “C” entails the construction and rehabilitation of 24 stations and 21,5 km of metro line, 13 of which carried out underground; the new metro line will improve the transportation system of a congested city such as Rome.The new line “C” of San Giovanni metro station will be constructed adjacent to the existing line “A” of San Giovanni station; the new metro line “C” is deeper than line “A” and will underpass the existing station. The underpass project envisages an Artificial Ground Freezing in order to excavate two new tunnels, while keeping trains running in the safest possible condition.In order to allow trains to regularly run to and from the existing station’s line “A”, a temporary structure for rail support, during excavation of the under-crossing tunnels, was installed and a real-time monitoring system was devised in order to control both soil temperature during freezing activities and the existing station’s behavior. The Jordan Phosphate Mines Company is one of the world&apos;s major phosphate rock and phosphatic fertilizers producers (the second largest phosphate rock exporter), with ore reserves exceeding 2 billion tonnes, mainly located in the Eshidiya area. The Eshidiya phosphate deposits, 120 km north-east of Aqaba, are of sedimentary origin (as are all phosphate ore in Jordan). Three exploitable beds (Al, A2, and A3) with variable content of P205, CaO, SiO2, etc., are processed in order to produce 68-70,73-75, and 75-77% TCP grades. The A3 bed, which is characterized as the most siliceous containing 40-48% TCP, requires physical beneficiation using wet scrubbing, screening, and desliming by hydrocylone, followed by anionic conventional flotation to achieve 75- 77% TCP grade. For the last 15 years extensive laboratory and pilot tests (including physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies) were carried out. After operating the industrial plant, certain modifications were deemed necessary to adjust the operational parameters and the final flowsheet, which was followed to obtain the targeted quantity and quality of concentrate.

Wollastonite, named after W.H. Wollaston, an English chemist and mineralogist, is a calcium metasilicate having the chemical formula CaSiO2. Although it is a unique mineral, wollastonite has a short history of industrial use. Wollastonite is the only naturally occurring, nonmetallic, white acicular mineral. Its acicularity is the main reason for its ascendancy in the late 1970s and 1980s as a reinforcing filler and as a replacement for short-fiber asbestos and short-fiber milled fiberglass. Wollastonite is used in applications ranging from bowling balls to automobile fenders, from ceramic tile to automobile brakes, and from thermal insulation board to protective industrial coatings. The United States is the largest producer of wollastonite, with China, India, and Finland as the other three major sources. The United States, Europe, and the Far East are where most of the production is consumed. Geology Mineralogy and Physical and Chemical Properties Wollastonite, a member of the pyroxenoid mineral group, has the theoretical composition of 48.3% CaO and 51.7% SiO2. Iron, manganese, magnesium, or strontium may substitute for some of the calcium. Commonly associated minerals include garnet, diopside, calcite, quartz, epidote, apatite, and sphene. Some of the physical properties of wollastonite are listed in [Table 1]. Wollastonite is largely chemically inert; however, it can be decomposed in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Some wollastonite will fluoresce under shortwave or longwave ultraviolet light, or both, with colors ranging from pink-orange to yellow-orange and, more rarely, bluish green. In addition, wollastonite may show phos¬phorescence. Because of its unique cleavage properties wollastonite breaks down during crushing and grinding into lath-like or needle-shaped particles of varying acicularity. This particle morphology imparts high strength and is therefore of considerable importance in many of the markets for wollastonite. The acicularity of particles is defined by their length:width, or length:diameter, ratio (i.e., aspect ratio). Individual particles, even the smallest ones, commonly ex¬hibit an aspect ratio of 7:1 or 8:1 and have an average diameter of 3.5 gm. Low aspect ratio products (powder wollastonite, or milled grades) with 3:1 to 5:1 aspect ratios are used as general fillers, in ceramics, and in metallurgical fluxing. High aspect ratio products with ratios of 15:1 to 20:1 are used as functional fillers for rein¬forcing thermoplastic and thermoset polymer compounds and as a replacement for asbestos. The dry brightness and whiteness of wollastonite are also important in determining its suitability for certain filler and ceramic applications. When pure, the mineral is brilliantly white, but impurities may color it cream or gray. Brightness is determined by measuring the reflectance of finely ground powder against a stan¬dard that is assigned a brightness of 100. Magnesium oxide and barium sulfate are the two standards used. G.E. brightness, a term used in North America, refers to brightness measured with a Gen¬eral Electric reflectometer. Commercial wollastonite products usu¬ally have a G.E. brightness ranging from 85 to 95. The Hunter method is also used to measure the brightness of wollastonite. Loss on ignition (LOI), another important property in determining applications for wollastonite, is the amount of volatile matter driven off when the mineral is heated to 1 000°C. Com¬mercial wollastonite products have an ignition loss ranging from 0.5 to 2.0%. Wollastonite&apos;s naturally high pH of 9.9 (10% water slurry) is of major importance to its use in the coatings industry. Coatings formulators use milled grades as a pH stabilizer in interior and exterior PVA (polyvinyl acetate) and acrylic latex paints. There are two polymorphs of calcium silicate: wollastonite, a low-temperature form, and pseudowollastonite, a high-temperature form. Conversion of wollastonite to pseudowollastonite occurs at about 1 120°C and results in an increase in the coefficient of expansion and a color change. Pure white wollastonite may change to a cream tint or to various shades of red or brown. This color change is thought to be due to the presence of iron and/or strontium.

Part 2 of this article continues the discussion of a 10-year, multimillion dollar research and plant testing program on slurry rheology and grinding circuits. The first part of the article (ME, Dec. 1982) presented the basic concepts identified by the research and some laboratory test results. This section Illustrates typical Industrial scale test results and Identifies some industrial operating implications of controlling rheology by different methods. At least four controllable factors decide the rheological character of a slurry-slurry density or percent solids, particle size distribution, chemical environment, and slurry temperature. The second factor has two interrelated facets: the shape of the particle size distribution which controls packing behavior of the solids, and the fineness of the distribution. Finer particles increase interparticle forces and viscosity. As indicated in Part 1, during a given grinding test it is possible for all four factors to change. However, regardless of the particular settings of the four factors in a given test, if the resulting rheological character is either dilatant, pseudoplastic, or pseudoplastic with yield, the associated breakage rate is correlated with the current rheological character. It is obvious, for example, in batch grinding tests run at constant percent solids, that the second and third factors, where appropriate, are changing during grinding because size distributions are changing and the production of fresh surface area takes up unadsorbed chemical. Thus the corresponding rheological character change in batch tests with increasing grind time would be dilatant to pseudoplastic to pseudoplastic with yield. The degree to which this transformation occurs depends on the changing setting of the four factors over grinding time. In continuous grinding tests, one might logically expect that dramatic changes in any one of the four factors will be less likely to occur. It will be shown that continuous mill operations offer some unique opportunities to take advantage of possible rheological transformation by more direct operational control of the settings for the four factors. One extra observation noted in the rheological studies was the variability in the location and extent of region B (pseudoplastic behavior) for the various coals and ores tested. The location of region B was usually in the region of 45-55% solids by volume and was of the extent of 0-8%, or 2-11% with chemical addition. The corresponding increase in net production ranged from 0-10% in region B and 0-21% in region B&apos;. When region B is small or zero (no pseudoplastic character is exhibited) no increase in production will be observed and the use of chemicals is often marginal. There are several reasons for some materials exhibiting this quick transformation from dilatancy to high yield values often at surprisingly low percent solids by volume such as 30%. One condition identified was for materials containing high levels of viscosity-producing elements such as- carbonates or clays. A second condition documented was for materials that exhibited unusually fine primary fragment distributions (fine B1,; curves). This corresponds to materials having small y values of < 0.5. Such a slurry developed a yield value quickly during grinding because of the rapid buildup of fines. A related problem can be presented by materials exhibiting excessively coarse primary fragment distributions, y values > 0.9. Breakage of this type of material produces size distributions that give poor packing efficiencies even at long grind times, thus hindering the normal rheological transformation presented earlier. A final condition that can cause the occurrance of region B to be small or zero is when the media void volume filling of slurry is < 100%. Figures 5a and 5b use previously published data of this study to demonstrate the influence of solids loading and weight percent solids on the net production of taconite ore in a laboratory batch ball mill. In particular, Fig. 5a illustrates several trends not generally recognized until this study. They include these two: • Increased slurry density allows for increased solids loading before passing through the maximum in the net production curve where the fall-off is due to non first order breakage. • The use of rheology control chemicals such as GA-4272 allows this trend to be extended to higher slurry loadings with an increase in net production over any previous condition by keeping grinding first order. Figure 5b shows the same data as Fig. 5a plotted for constant weight loadings. These various figures of net production versus percent solids show the location and extent of the regions A, B, and C presented in Part 1 as a function of solids loading. It is obvious that the rheological transformation pattern described earlier does not hold true for slurry loadings corresponding to less than the void volume of the media, which is also a region of

Though sedimentary rocks comprise only about five percent of the volume of the continental crust, they cover about 80% of its surface, serve as important reservoirs for fluids, contain reserves of non-metallic minerals, and have in general been extensively drilled. However, most drilling has been shallow in comparison to the thickness of the crust and such deep drilling as has taken place is very strongly localized in sedimentary basins. This may be seen by reference to Figures 1 and 2 which show the location of wells that drilled deeper than 15,000&apos; [=] 4.6 km. (Figure 1) and those that drilled below 20,000&apos; [=] 6.15 km. (Figure 2). It is apparent that, even in regions of sedimentary cover, direct exploration below six kilometers has been very restricted. In the case of the metamorphic and igneous rocks which make up 95% of the volume of the crust, direct exploration has been much less extensive in terms of both area and depth. The present state of our knowledge of the crust below a&apos; thin surface layer stands in marked contrast to our growing present need for raw materials and the needs of future generations. It also stands in contrast to our need for enhanced, scientific knowledge of the deeper crust, its configuration, its present state, its hydrothermal systems,-its evolution, and its materials. Lessons learned in exploring the third dimension of the sea floor, the vigorous prosecution of seismic profiling, the development of testable models for hydrothermal systems and mineral deposits, the need for better understanding of heat flow, state of stress, earthquake mechanisms, and a host of other phenomena all suggest that it is time to launch a national program for scientific exploration of the crust which uses drilling to test important hypotheses developed on the basis of indirect evidence.

Location Xiaolangdi is located in the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. The distance between Xiaolangdi and the capital of Henan, Zhengzhou, is about200 km. Xiaolangdi is located on the Yellow River at the end of its big characteristic knee. It can be easily found on the map by locating Luoyang. The closest big city to Xiaolangdi is Luoyang (about 45 km). This city has about1 million inhabitants and is well known also to foreigners for its famous historical past. It has been the capital of China through 10 dynasties in former times. Overview The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is located at the last gorge of the middle reach of the Yellow River. The main purposes of the project are: -flood control, - ice jam control, - sediment control, - irrigation, - water supply, - hydroelectric power generation. The project consists of many structures, these are 10 intake towers, 9 flood &sediment tunnels, 6 power tunnels, 1 underground powerhouse, and 1 zone dearth and rockfill dam with a sloping impervious core, 154m high, with a crest length of 1317m. The powerhouse mainly features 6 turbine and generator units of 300 MW, totalling installed capacity of 1800 MW and annual energy output of5.1 GWH. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 12.65 billion m³ of which 5.1billion m³ is live storage. Of the Yellow River drainage basin, 694,000 km2 or 92,3percent is located upstream of Xiaolangdi Dam Site. Xiaolangdi is located in a key position for flood and sediment control of the Yellow River. Upon completion, Xiaolangdi Dam and Reservoir will effectively mitigate catastrophic floods, the control level will be increased from the present less than 100-year return period up to 10,000 years. Bauxite can be regarded as a mixture of hydrated aluminium oxides the predominant constituent - and oxides of iron and titanium, silica and silicates. Heterogeneous and non-crystaline, most bauxites vary in average composition from one deposit to another both in terns of impurities as well as the proportion of Gibbsita and the Monohydrates Diaspore and Boehmite. Iron levels (as Fe2O3) can vary from less than 1% to as high as 30% with the alumina content ranging from 40 to 6o%,. Gore than 90% of all bauxite mined in Guyana is used as feed for the - production of refractory grade calcined bauxite. There are -however, several speciality grades used in various industrial applications and these are characterised by the quality of the bauxite in particular ;,with regards to iron and silica levels which generally have to be low. The main speciality grades are designated Refractory, Abrasive and Chemical. Bauxitte is also used in the production of nigh alumina cements,, activated bauxite end in the manufacture of electrical insulators.

Outokumpu Tara Mines located near Dublin, Ireland is Europe&apos;s largest producer of lead and zinc concentrates. To reduce dewatering costs and to improve environmental and working conditions, elimination of the lead concentrate thermal dryer was required. This paper describes the development and implementation of the pressure ceramic technology at Tara to replace a conventional vacuum filter/oil-fired dryer system. In 1996 the pressure ceramic filter dewatered 66,600tonnes of lead concentrate, producing a cake at 6 % moisture. Substantial operating cost savings have been realized. Commissioning of a second pressure ceramic filter to handle over 300,000 tonnes/year of zinc concentrates is scheduled for the first quarter of 1997.

A sensitive portion of Section U 6/3 of the Vienna, Austria subway system required construction of two single-track tunnels under a telecommunications facility, where strict ground settlement limitations had been set. Local geology, hydrology, and site constraints led to the decision to use the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) supplemented by compressed air and partial dewatering. In addition, ground freezing was used, as the tunnel would pass through alluvial layers beneath the facility, with a cover of as little as 1.5 m. Laboratory testing and two in situ test fields were used to collect frozen soil data so that the freezing scheme ensured minimal heaving magnitude.

INTRODUCTION This paper outlines the methods used to drill and pregrout prior to the excavation of five Mine Shafts in the Coal Measures of the Eastern United States. One example is the use of cement pregrouting of four 240 meter deep shafts and the second is the use of chemical pregrouting of a 360 meter deep shaft. These two examples will be compared and contrasted, both at the investigation stage of each project, and during the drilling and pregrouting itself, to illustrate the different approaches taken and how these affected the outcome, both technically and economically. INVESTIGATION FOR 240 METER SHAFTS In the case of the four 240 meter shafts, site investigation was carried out prior to bid, and information was made available by the Client in the form of a report. This report was based on pressure testing of NQ cored boreholes at each shaft site. Pressure testing was repeated two or more times, at each test setting, using 345 or 690 kPa of water pressure in accordance with the procedure outlined by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. Flow readings were taken every minute over a period of ten minutes. Maximum computed permeabilities, for the strata which accepted water under test for the shafts, carried between 1.0 x 10-6 m/s and 3.0 x 10-6 m/s, and total calculated seepages varied between 170&apos; litres/minute to 3891 litres/minute. Although these figures did not indicate an excessive amount of seepage, the Client decided that pregrouting should be carried out, and chemical grouting was not discussed, even though the test permeabilities indicated the use of cement grout would be limited in this case.

Magnetic proximity detection systems (PDSs) are used with continuous mining machines (CMMs) to protect miners from striking and pinning accidents. Generators are used in a PDS to create magnetic fields covering the space around a CMM. The PDS determines the proximity of a miner relative to the CMM based on the magnetic flux density detected by a miner-wearable component (MWC) and simultaneously alerts the miner and stops the motion of the CMM if the miner is within a proximity that creates a striking hazard. A stable magnetic field is essential to the accuracy of the proximity calculations performed by the PDS. This paper presents the results of a systematic study of the magnetic influence of two types of steel structures found near a CMM— the body of the CMM itself and the wire mesh used for roof and rib control. The results show that the steel of the CMM body can change the magnetic field distribution and also alter electrical parameters of a PDS by changing its generator current. The study also shows that, depending on the distance between the wire mesh and a generator, the magnetic field can also be altered.

Linear programming on desktop computers is commonly used to optimize coal blending proportions. The objective function is usually the cost of the blend. The constraints consist of materials and heat balances as expressed as linear functions of the blend. This is illustrated in Example 1. Inclusion of a sulfur compliance constraint is more complex because the maximum permitted sulfur percentage is not a pre-specified constant. Rather, it is a function of the calorific power of the blend itself. The current limit of 1.2 pounds of sulfur dioxide per million Btu may be expressed as: Sulfur Max % = 0.6 • H/10,000 with H in Btu/lb.

The paper discusses design and construction of a 1.8 meter (6 ft.) diameter tunnel installed under complex geology of Staten Island, New York. Contract T-13 is a section of the Oakwood Beach Water Pollution Control Project constructed for New York City Department of Environmental Protection. A knowledge of the subsurface conditions and difficulties experienced on the adjacent contracts called for an innovative approach to handle tunneling under 12 to 17 meters (40-55 ft.) of water in the variable subsurface conditions. This paper describes tunnel design and construction utilizing continuous grouting during advancement of tunnel boring machine and installation of liner plates.

This paper describes the shield excavation of twin transit tunnels, through soft ground, in downtown Seattle. The tunnels are 6.5 m (21.25 ft) diameter and 1525 m (5000 ft) long. Initial support consisted of expandable precast concrete segments, followed by a final lining of cast-in-place concrete. Waterproofing was provided by a PVC membrane installed between the initial support and the final lining. During the course of the excavation a variety of methods were used to control the ground and limit settlement. These included deep wells, vacuum well points, eductor wells, chemical grouting, compaction grouting, jet-grout underpinning, and extensive instrumentation.

This paper presents a vision system capable of providing an accurate estimate for the volume of stockpiles using 2D images. By imaging a stockpile from multiple viewpoints with a two-camera system, a 3D point cloud of known scale is generated using image-based 3D reconstructions. With a small amount of user interaction, the points that correspond to the surface of the stockpile are extracted and used to measure the volume. The hardware required for the two-camera system is light enough to be carried by a small unmanned aircraft and is a cheaper alternative to LiDAR while still being competitive in terms of accuracy. When testing the volume measurement algorithm on a stockpile of known volume, the measured output was found to have less than a 3% error from the ground truth.

As a followup to a USBM-sponsored research project, the authors utilized the knowledge-base structure and system concepts from a Sun Sparcstation-based worker-scheduling system of the mine-management support system to develop a PC-based application. The new software adopts the nested-window concept to facilitate data collection and modification on personnel, including their availability and work priorities during a shift. The system can optimally allocate manpower on a work shift and can delineate supervisory training responsibilities. The various components of the software, including enhancements made to the original system, are described in detail.
