Exploration for non-fuel minerals has declined since 1988 as recessionary pressures have slowed growth in the industrialized economies. By most accounts, however, 1990 expenditures were still significantly greater than the low levels experienced in the mid-1980s. The Persian Gulf crisis introduced instability in energy prices and greater uncertainty into an already cloudy economic picture. As 1990 unfolded, the US savings and loan problems spread to the commercial banking system, leading to the failure of several major US commercial banks. The Japanese stock market also suffered significant losses as Japan's Central Bank raised interest rates. The Soviet Union experienced shortages of food and other basic items. Its government faces resistance to changes leading to a market economy. Individual Soviet republics also are seeking more control of their own destiny. The cost of German reunification, in terms of the capital required to bring the east's infrastructure and industrial base to western standards, also appears to have been underestimated.

"In copper solvent extraction, managing the quality of the organic phase is a key parameter to ensure optimal physical and metallurgical performance in the plant. Increased throughput as a result of declining ore grades coupled with advances in plant design and practice, resulting in reduced organic losses, has pushed the limits of the status quo with respect to organic quality. Clay treatment of plant and recovered organic at the optimal dosage is critical in maintaining quality, however, achieving the optimal dosage through existing filtration capacity and practice can be difficult. Cytec has developed a process aid that increases efficiency of existing filtration equipment that has been successfully implemented at two commercial SX operations. ACORGA® CB1000 enables higher dosages of clay while allowing for more efficient use of existing filtration capacity. This study analyzes results from commercial trials and demonstrates that improved organic quality and clarity is achievable through optimization of current treatment practices. INTRODUCTION Decreasing ore grades have prompted copper solvent extraction operations to raise PLS flow rates, increasing plant throughput to maintain production1. The ability to process higher flow rates through existing mixer-settlers historically came at the expense of increased entrainments2. However, advances in mixer-settler design, practices and improvements in organic recovery processes have enabled operations to maintain, and in some cases reduce organic losses while achieving higher flow rates through existing equipment. Based on the increased demand on the SX equipment and reduced losses (or more efficient recovery) maintenance of the circuit organic quality through efficient clay treatment is now more important than ever. This paper discusses common industry practices and related issues in organic clay treatment, and presents benefits achieved in commercial operations through the use of ACORGA® CB1000 Clay Binder. IMPROVEMENTS IN DESIGN AND PLANT PRACTICE Mixer-settler design has improved since the first commercial copper SX operation in the late 1960s. Advanced designs in mixer, settler, and settler internals have contributed to reductions in entrainments. For example, improved impeller designs have been reported to decrease organic in aqueous entrainment from the ‘old designs’ of 50-200 ppm3 to as low as 4 – 10 ppm confirmed via diluent and reagent consumptions . Similarly, operations are reporting a 20-50% decrease in reagent consumption when compared to the original design criteria3. Operations have optimized settler internals to increase coalescence and have improved settler operating practices which have been shown to reduce entrainments7. Comparison of the SX world operating data from 1999 and 2007 shows reductions in organic entrainment losses with increases in flow rates."

Velocity of detonation (VOD) is an important variable when evaluating the performance of mine blasts. Typically, for a VOD measurement, individual probes have to be loaded into each blast hole that requires a measurement, which increases the loading time and is not representative of the whole blast. Experimental studies of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the detonation of explosive charges show that electric and magnetic field signals are observed when chemical explosions occur in the air, at the ground surface, and in the underground. EMP has the potential to evaluate VOD of the whole blast without impeding the loading process. Due to a variety of physical causes which make the electromagnetic effects complex, measuring EMP of the detonation of explosive charges has not been fully studied yet. Five different antennae were tested with explosives, which are commonly used in mining industry. Among the five antennae, aluminum and copper tape, and wire were successful to detect the EMP. INTRODUCTION The measurement of the velocity of detonation (VOD) helps in evaluating and comparing relative performance of explosives in mine blasts. A VOD of an explosive is usually predicted by empirical mathematical equations or measured in-hole by VOD meters. However, conventional methods to measure a VOD have constraints: only a limited number of holes can be measured because cost of consumables for such systems is very high, and systems only allow a certain number of holes to be measured. The measurement cables have to be placed into the holes prior to loading with explosives which means that preparing to take the measurement is time consuming and has to be well coordinated with the mine. In order to evaluate VOD for a whole blast, there is a possibility of using electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the detonation of the explosives. As there are many parameters that affect the generated EMP from explosive charges, measuring EMP of the detonation of explosive charges has not been fully studied yet. Most studies conducted relate to military related explosives, not the ones frequently used in mining industry. This research has been performed to have a better understanding of EMP from the types of explosives which are commonly used in the mining industry. To discover a way to detect EMP efficiently, five different types of antennae have been studied in the air and in the underground blasting conditions: coil, monopole rod, log periodic, wire, and aluminum and copper tape. LITERATURE REVIEW Conventional methods of measuring VOD Over the years, demands for more accurate theoretical predictions and physical measurements of the effects of the explosives have increased. Especially when both demand and commodity price decline, mining companies are keen to understand the effectiveness of explosives since it has a direct relationship with fragmentation, which influences their production rate. Since the 1940s, various methods have been devised to determine VOD of explosives.

"Dilution in underground coal operations can be underestimated by up to five times during Feasibility Studies, with disastrous economic consequences. Every 1% of stone waste introduced can reduce an in situ specific energy of 11,000 BTU/lb (25 MJ/kg) by some 110 BTU/lb (0.25 MJ/kg) and increases the abrasiveness of the run-of-mine coal. Where a wash plant is not in place, penalties imposed for not meeting contractual specifications alone can amount to some AU$1 million per year.This paper presents a method for monitoring, reporting and ultimately controlling dilution in an underground coal mining operation. The dilution trends before and after introducing the recommended controls in a continuous miner/longwall mine are presented over an eight year period. The additional information from such a dilution monitoring program can also be used to control mining horizons and plan longwall extraction heights across the face proactively, on a short-term scale with resulting improvements in productivity. INTRODUCTION Grade control, as practiced on any mine, is concerned with predicting routine quality and tonnage values for short- to medium-term mining operations, and the reconciliation of these predictions against “actual” results. For a longwall mine supplying steam coal, such routine parameters may include the proximate analyses, specific energy (SE), abrasiveness and sulphur, as well as float and sink analyses if the coal is beneficiated. In addition, grade control is concerned with identifying the mineable horizon (or horizons) in a selective-mining operation, together with monitoring how well these horizons have been extracted or adhered to. Close-spaced surface drilling can be costly for any mining venture, particularly for longwall mines operating in the deeper seams. For this reason, much of the data for short-term grade control requirements are acquired during actual bord-and-pillar development. The underground data are derived from so-called “channel” samples. These samples are cut or chipped from the coal seam, perpendicular to the mining horizon, with dimensions suitable for obtaining sufficient “representative” sample for analyses. For a 2m thick mining horizon, a channel sample 300 mm wide and 50 mm deep over the thickness of the horizon would provide some 4.5 kg of sample, sufficient for most of the necessary tests. To allow the information to be computer recorded, additional information such as seam thickness, sample co-ordinates, and the elevation of the seam (or horizon) roof or floor, may be required."

In 2016, a 3.7-ML magnitude event caused by mining activity occurred at a longwall mine in southwestern Virginia which was recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and felt by local residents. The event was the largest of its kind since a global mine design change by the operator was instituted in 2008 following three large events in 2005, 2006, and 2007 (3.4, 4.3, and 3.4 Moment Magnitude (Mw), respectively). Two of the three pre-2008 events (2005 and 2007) damaged ventilation controls in the mine which fueled a mine fire. In 2016, the mine’s management requested researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to access geological data and determine what parameters could possibly lead to events of a magnitude of 1.0 ML or greater. Evaluation of 2152 geological data points and modeling revealed three major geological factors in common with the majority of the 181 recorded +1.0 ML events from 2009 through 2016. A new kinetic approach to simulation of fracture is given. The main object of the simulation is forecasting transformation of ore lumps size distribution in squeezing of ore layer between two planes. The approach rests on fundamental principles of energy and mass conservation and on new ideas about fracture physics connected with fractal geometry. On this base an integro-differen tial equation of layer crushing kinetics is formulated. This equation is similar to well-known kinetic equation of grinding, but here we use elastic energy density in place of time as an independent variable while selection function is considered by us to be dependent on this variable. Properties of the equation have been investigated by us and its analytical solution has been found. It allows to compute simultaneously both the evolution of the size distribution process of squeezing and force-displacement diagram. Results of theoretical calculations provide a good fit with experimental data.

An exploration bore core sample of coal ought to be reduced from its original cylindrical form to a particle size distribution and particle composition that reflects, insofar as possible, a process stream of? raw? coal it represents. Often, coal cores are reduced with a laboratory crushing machine, the product of which may not match the raw coal size distribution or size fraction composition. This study employs drop-shatter impact breakage followed by dry batch tumbling in a steel cylinder rotated about its transverse axis in order to characterize the core material in terms of first-order and zeroth-order breakage rate constants. These are indices of the propensity of the coal to degrade during excavation and handling. Initial drop-shatter and dry tumbling tests were done with synthetic cores, to reduce material variables and . conserve difficult-to-obtain coal cores.? Cores of three different coal beds --Illinois No.6, Upper Freeport, and Pocahontas No. 5 -were subjected to drop-shatter and dry batch tumbling tests to determine breakage response. Comparison of coal preparation plant feed with a crushed bore core and a bore core prepared by drop-shatter and tumbling (all from the same Illinois No.6 coal mining property) indicated that the size distribution and size fraction composition of the drop-shattered/tumbled core more closely resembled the plant feed than the crushed core.

Suites of monomineralic sulfide and carbonate minerals, as well as mine-waste composite samples, were analyzed using chemical and microanalytical techniques to understand behavior and bioavailability of mine waste elements such as Cu, Fe, Pb, or Zn. Petrographic, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and laser-ablation inductively-coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) studies of mineralogical residence sites of trace elements are important because trace elements affect the chemical and physical behavior of minerals. Leachate solutions show that chalcopyrite, bornite, azurite, malachite, and galena are host to the trace elements Ag, Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. SEM studies reveal whether these trace elements occur within mineral inclusions or are substituted within lattice structures. SEM analysis reveals mineral phases not identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), such as inclusions of sphalerite and cobaltite(?) within chalcopyrite.

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, longwall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air and spray water in an effort to control respirable dust and/or methane. Air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1,500 )fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high velocities. The greatest likelihood for entraining dust into the high-velocity airstream may occur as shields are advanced, allowing relatively dry particles to fall from the shield canopy directly into the airstream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation during shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 8.2 m/s (400 to 1,600 fpm). Airborne dust samples were obtained with personal impactors to quantify the size distribution and concentration of the dust entrained at the various air velocities. Statistically significant increases in both total and respirable dust concentrations were measured as test air velocities were increased.

Mud is one of the oldest building materials used by man, but it is not only of historic interest. Even today in many parts of the world, particularly lightly forested areas, it is the chief building material. Many authorities believe that at least 30% and perhaps 50% of the world's present population lives in earthen dwellings (Dethier, 1985, Coffman et al., 1990). Not all of these people are members of primitive societies or live in third world countries. European, African, Asian, and both North and South American countries contain a large number of such structures. In the United States, the American West, and particularly the Southwest, is known for this type of construction. Some of the earliest remains of adobe structures are those discovered in the ruins of Neolithic farming villages in Mesopo¬tamia dating as far back as 7000 BC (Steen, 1972). The word adobe has its roots in Egyptian hieroglyphs denoting brick and evolved to its present form through Arabic and Spanish (Lumpkins, 1977). The Spanish conquest of the New World spread the use of wooden molds to produce a standard adobe brick. Today, the word adobe is used to describe various earth building materials and techniques, usually referring to sun-dried adobe brick now used in the United States, but is also applied to puddled adobe structures, mud-plastered logs or branches (Jacal or waddle-and-daub), pressed-earth blocks, and rammed-earth walls or pisé (Smith and Austin, 1989, Ferm, 1985). Modern mud construction is used in many countries in various parts of the world. In the United States, the states from Texas to California are perhaps best known for this type of construction. Of these states, New Mexico has the dominant reputation for adobe use. Indeed, in New Mexico the Santa Fe style (Fig. 1) has made adobe not only acceptable, but preferred. RAW MATERIALS Adobe soil used by present day adobe producers, and probably past adobe producers as well, is principally sandy loam (50% clay and silt), although clayey silts are used in some areas (Coffman et al., 1990). In New Mexico, the best adobe soils are those developed on stream deposits, particularly Holocene (Recent) terrace deposits and older, loosely compacted geologic formations, such as the Santa Fe Group (Tertiary) located in the Rio Grande Valley. Some modern adobe producers use a mixture of materials from the screened fines of aggregate operations and mud from irrigation ditches in the river valleys combined with varying amounts of sand to produce the proper blend. Mineralogy Bulk Mineralogy: X-ray diffraction analyses of whole rock samples from many parts of the world where adobe is the dominant construction material show the major constituents of adobe are quartz and feldspar, with lesser amounts (in order of abundance) of calcite, clay minerals, and gypsum (Coffman et al., 1990). Adobes from and climates contain considerable calcite; in some cases calcite is second only to quartz in volume. Quartz, feldspar, most of the clay minerals, and some calcite commonly are derived from the mechanical/chemical breakdown of older rocks units. Some of the clay minerals, much of the calcite and perhaps all of the gypsum are precipitated from evaporating water. Clay Mineralogy: Clay-size minerals consist dominantly of clay minerals, but nearly clay-size fractions contain minor amounts of quartz and calcite, and occasionally other nonclay minerals. In earth construction materials from New Mexico, clay-size particles are the most compositionally variable in commercial adobe soils. However, the clay mineral groups in this size fraction consist of about equal parts of expandable clay minerals (smectite and mixed¬layer illite/smectite or I/S) and non-expandable clay minerals (ka¬olinite, illite, and chlorite), with minor quartz, calcite, and feldspar (Smith and Austin, 1989, Austin, 1990). In the and American Southwest, smectite is commonly calcium-rich and the I/S is dis¬organized and randomly interstratified. In a study of 42 New Mex¬ican commercial adobe soils, only two contained chlorite, and vermiculite, sepiolite, and palygorskite were not found. Soils in temperate climates, as are found in the midwestern and northeastern United States, contain an abundance of illite (Potter et al., 1975). The clay minerals in earthen structures of that region and in Europe commonly contain illite with less amounts of kaolinite, smectite, I/S, chlorite, and vermiculite. In contrast, the clay-size fractions of soils of humid tropical areas are typically acid, with kaolinite as the dominant clay mineral and lesser amounts of I/S, illite, smectite, and others (Chamley, 1989).

From 2015 to 2021, five massive pillar collapses occurred at four underground stone mines in the eastern United States. These events resulted in powerful airblasts that damaged mine infrastructure and mobile equipment, seriously injured miners, and disrupted underground travelways. Each of these pillar collapses propagated through the overlying strata, causing a subsidence basin on the surface. Pillar collapses are particularly hazardous for miners because they can occur with little warning and can affect miners that are far from the pillar collapse area. The following case studies show that certain factors may increase the likelihood of a pillar collapse. For instance, each of the five events involved the collapse of at least twelve benched pillars with width-to-height ratios (w/h) of 0.8 or less. This study elaborates on

Pricing for tantalum raw materials experienced explosive increases in the period 1978-1979, and-similar declines over 1980-1982. The causes for this are examined. Negative effects on the industry are highlighted. Analysis is provided of subsequent structural changes within the industry which minimize probability of future pricing excursions. Data on markets, sources of material, and outlines of concentration and extractive processes are reviewed. The conclusion is reached that expanded sources, future flat demand, and a broader international base of industry participants are principal forces in this restructure. Flat demand is reviewed as a function of increasing application of tantalum, but in more cost effective forms. This is driven by technical advance, notably in electronics applications.

When one's attention moves from the control of a process unit or from the control of a department of similar units, to the control of an entire plant, two things must change. One is the techniques of control, and the other, the goal or purpose of control. The goal is no longer maintaining a certain quality of product or maintaining a particular flow rate through a process unit. The goal becomes economic - how to make the most money out of the plant. The principal control techniques become those of optimizing, rather than regulating. It is quite common to discuss the control of an entire plant in terms of three levels of control l; regulation, supervision, and optimization. Regulation is the control of inputs to a process unit at desired values. This is accomplished by two or three mode analog controllers or DDC loops. The second level of control is the selection of these desired values, e.g., set-points of the regulation controllers. The third level is to make such adjustments or corrections to the supervisory calculations so as to optimize the plant profit. It is immediately evident that supervisory control and optimizing control are intimately related, and a distinct dividing line cannot always be drawn between the two. Some authors prefer to add even more levels such as adaptive control and management information systems, but we believe our point is well made without further division of the functions which are necessary for complete plant control. To accomplish the economic goal, that is, the optimizing (maximizing) of the profit of a mineral processing plant, the plant should ideally be operated as if it were a separate company, buying its raw materials on the open market and selling its products on the open market. While petrochemical plants endeavor to operate in that manner, unfortunately this is not true of a mineral processing plant. The plant manager has to accept the amount and quality of ore the mining department delivers to him, and the products (concentrates) are delivered to another department of the company for further refining. The Detroit River Outfall No. 2. is an effluent water conveyance system linking the Detroit Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Detroit River. The 6.4m (21ft) finished diameter tunnel extends 1,890m (6,200ft) east from the bottom of a 91m(300ft) deep, 9.2m (30ft) diameter drop shaft. At the eastern terminus of the tunnel, six Riser Shafts connect the tunnel to diffuser heads on the riverbed. The tunnel runs through a highly fractured Limestone formation capable of producing high levels of groundwater in?ows and Hydrogen Sul?de gas. Control of this water and gas was a theme which ran through the entire Project’s design and construction. This paper will provide an overview of each portion of the Project’s construction, including the Entrance Shaft, Precast Concrete Segments, TBM Tunnel, Pre-Excavation Grouting Methods, and the Riser Shafts.

Current Army tunnel destruction criteria (1) are based on limited nuclear-explosive (NE) and high-explosive (HE) test data. The PILE DRIVER (2) and HARDHAT (3) events investigated tunnel and support system response where yields were relatively large and tunnel diameter small compared to typical underground openings and localized stress fields of low yield weapons. Some limited tunnel destruction information was obtained from underground events of the PLUMBBOB and HARDTACK II Series (4). These events used access drifts which were designed to be self closing at the weapon point. The limited NE data are augmented by HE results from the Underground Explosion Test (UET) Program, a series of model and prototype-scale experiments in granite and sandstone (5). Weapon standoff distances (charge c.g. to tunnel wall) were at or near the maximum for major damage. Limited tunnel destruction was produced by a series of hasty and deliberate tests (6) on abandoned railroad tunnels in basalt. Additional HE data were obtained from model tests at the Waterways Experiment Station (WES) (7) using 2.1 MJ (2 lb) TNT charges and tunnel diameters varying from 3 to 17 cm (1.2 to 6.6 in). Recent laboratory scale HE experiments (8) conducted at the WES under the ESSEX program investigated the effects of tunnel diameter, standoff distance, charge confinement, material strength and to a limited extent, tunnel spacing and liner strength variations on tunnel damage. This paper summarizes the analysis conducted to develop predictions for the effects of low-yield nuclear weapons against tunnels and underground openings in rock.

Rock bursts in the deep metal mines of the Coeur d’Alene district present an ever increasing problem in the safe and economic mining of the district’s silver, lead and zinc ores. Hecla Mining Company operates two mines in the district - the Star, a 1100-ton/day lead-zinc mine, and the Lucky Friday, a 750-ton/day silver- lead mine. Rock burst problems at both operations prompted Hecla management to make an all-out attempt to find a practical method of predicting and eventually controlling these bursts. Research by personnel from the Denver Research Center of the Bureau of Mines at ASARCO's Galena Mine indicated that a recognizable pattern of seismic activity preceded some bursts and this activity could be precisely monitored by present- day, off-the-shelf electronic devices. Using information gained by the Bureau and other sources, Hecla designed and installed a 24,- channel seismic monitoring system in the Lucky Friday mine. Installation was completed in December 1973 and after a year of successful operation, it was decided that a similar system would be installed in the Star mine. This second installation was completed in June 1975. Both systems are now operating and providing continuous information on underground seismic activity. Each monitoring system consists of a network of geophones with attendant amplifiers that are connected by shielded cable through an interfacing device to a computer. The origin of each seismic event is determined by the computer and a three-dimensional location is printed out. This information is plotted daily and is used to pinpoint rock burst prone areas and chart their relative seismic activity. This paper will review the causes and effects of rock bursts in the Coeur d'Alene district, the equipment and operation of the microseismic system at the Star and Lucky Friday mines, and the results obtained to date.

The 1987 recovery in the US mining industry permitted modest increases in exploration expenditures that year (Fig. 1). Favorable market conditions apparently allowed the gains to be sus¬tained in 1988. There was great uncer¬tainty early in the year as to whether world and US economic growth would be a casualty of the October 1987 worldwide stock market crash. By nearly all measures, the performance of the US minerals industry was strong¬. A weak US dollar and the strong growth of worldwide capital spending resulted in in¬creased US exports of con¬sumer and producer durable items as well as strong domes¬tic demand for metals. In fact, 1988 US steel industry exports reached levels not attained since the mid-1970s. It was re¬ported that steel industry labor productivity is now roughly twice the 1981 level. Among metals with signifi¬cant average nominal price increases in 1988 over 1987 levels were copper (43%), alu¬minum (52%0), and zinc (44%). Even though domestic copper production has grown since 1984 by 30% in mining and 24% in refining, em¬ployment in mining and milling is 4% below the 1984 level. Domestic unit costs are reported in the range of $1.10 to $1.33/kg (50 to 60 cents per lb). The US base metals industry is proba¬bly in its best cash position in many years. However, there has not been a large increase in exploration expendi¬tures. This is due mostly to the percep¬tion that worldwide capacity can easily be increased. Industry reports do show that "low cost" copper producers have been buying reserves from weaker com¬panies. The 1987 Society of Economic Ge¬ologists (SEG) survey of exploration activity indicated that 95 cents out of every exploration dollar spent by US and Canadian firms was for base and precious metals (Economic Geology, January 1989). Press reports, though, make it clear that most of that spending was targeted for precious metals. US claim staking data (Fig. 2) rein¬forces this suspicion. The apparent lag in new claim filings in Alaska and phe¬nomenal growth in filings in the lower 48 states suggests that exploration is directed at relatively low risk targets. In the conterminous 48, more than 40% of the new claims were made in Nevada, indicating an emphasis on gold (although even Nevada had some base metals exploration). Even with a price decline during 1988, the difference between the gold price and average global "cash" production cost of $7.30/g ($227 per oz) still leaves room for an attractive return (Northern Miner, 1988). Exploration plans and results Metals Economics Group (Halifax) indicated in its 1988 exploration survey that exploration expenditures by US and South African firms would be at about 1987 levels. It also reported that Canadian and Australian firms were ex¬pected to reduce their exploration spend¬ing significantly. Firms in both coun¬tries were caught in changes in tax laws. In Canada, the Mining Ex¬ploration Depletion Allow¬ance (MEDA) once permitted generous tax write-offs to in¬dividuals investing in miner¬als exploration. It was to be replaced in January 1989 with the Canadian Exploration In¬centives Program (CEIP). Although structured and ad¬ministered differently than MEDA, CEIP can provide an equivalent or possibly greater financial incentive for min¬eral exploration, for junior mining companies. In 1987, it is estimated that junior com¬panies accounted for two¬-thirds of the off-property (or grass roots) exploration ex¬penditures in Canada. Australia will revoke the tax exemption for gold in 1990. Australian operators, therfore, were expected to concentrate efforts on speeding up pro¬duction during 1988 and 1989. In 1988, Chile and Mali announced special efforts to attract gold explora¬tion by foreign companies. The Cana¬dian government continues to express concern about the write-off (and drawdown) of base metal reserves. As we approach the end-of the 20th century we are made more aware of the tremendous role that energy plays both directly and indirectly in our varied way of life. The industralized nations of the world have already established industries and economies which are greatly dependent upon the availability of energy. The underdeveloped and developing nations of the world are slowly and surely moving to the same utlimate requirements. The world wide need for distribution of energy sources is continuing to grow. At the present time there is a great imbalance between the sources of energy and the consuming economies In order to bring about greater equality between supply and demand major efforts and large capital expenditures are constantly being made. Industralized areas are seeking their own independent sources of energy whereas those areas of the world which contain great reserves of energy are limiting its export as well as developing its own industralized capacity. Nevertheless, energy bearing materials are still transported great distances in order to satiate the appetites of power hungry economies.
