The effect of particle size and composition on the pyrolysis and combustion of a pulverized bituminous coal in an entrained-flow reactor has been investigated. Predicted time-temperature histories of the coal particles and experimental weight loss data indicate a strong coupling of heat and mass transfer to the pyrolysis and combustion rates. A higher combustion rate following ignition was observed as particle size was increased to 112 µm (about 140 mesh). This is related to a higher particle temperature after ignition for the larger particles. Although the heating rate before ignition decreases with increasing particle size, higher slip velocities and surrounding gas temperatures for the larger particles promote early ignition. The presence of liptinite in the coal increases the weight loss rate before and immediately after ignition. Similar behavior was observed for pyrolysis. Fractions of an HVA bituminous coal that were rich in mineral matter or semi-fusinite were found to have a higher heterogeneous char combustion rate than vitrinite-rich samples.

An application of material requirements planning (MRP) to coal mine inventory control is presented. MRP is an efficient material control system that integrates the production planning and inventory management functions. Net material requirements are determined from the production forecast utilizing bill of material files, the inventory status file, and the purchase order status file. Net requirements are computed for each period in a specified planning horizon, and purchase orders, offset by lead time, are initiated routinely to ensure timely receipt of materials. The MRP system is especially useful in production-inventory systems in which con¬sumption of materials is directly production dependent.

The method usually used to predict the direction of flow in a connecting airway is to conduct a survey of the two existing nodes to be connected by the new pressure airway. It is then assumed that the air will flow from the node with the measured higher pressure to the node with measured lower pressure. This paper examines this direction-of-flow problem using properties of the system characteristic curve for a two-terminal network and specifies some conditions that will ensure that the air will flow in the direction anticipated. It was concluded that the only requirement is that all characteristic curves of the fans in the network should be strictly decreasing. Five numerical examples illustrate some important proper- ties of the direction-of-flow problem.

The leaching of primary porphyry chalcopyrite ore under simulated solution-mining conditions was studied using a packed-bed reactor. A mathematical model incorporating the intrinsic leaching kinetics of chalcopyrite and pyrite grains, the pore diffusion of dissolved oxygen within the ore fragments, liquid-solid mass transfer, and the effect of fluid flow and axial dispersion was formulated and tested for the overall leaching process. The dependence of oxygen solubility on ionic strength of the solution was also incorporated into the model. Satisfactory agreement between model pre- dictions and experimental data was obtained. The model can also predict the rate of the leaching process under different temperatures, oxygen pressures, solution flow rates, and different size distributions of ores.

In the mathematical analysis of electrical networks, the electrical devices are often modeled using idealized network elements such as current sources, voltage sources and resistors. An analogous approach is outlined for the modeling of mine ventilation networks, which can be considered nonlinear resistive networks. The proposed modeling technique uses the following five basic (nonreducible) elements: H, Q, D, R and N. These elements are characterized by their pressure gain or loss, their air quantity and their pressure-vs.-quantity relationships, each of which may be known or unknown. In addition to the definition of the basic elements, the necessary conditions for which there exists a unique solution are discussed. This is performed using theoretical developments derived from electrical circuit theory and illustrated in example networks. The proposed procedures are useful in the solution and characterization of mine-ventilation networks.

Stall or aerodynamic stall of axial flow fans has long been recognized as an important operational problem in mine ventilation. To develop a technique for characterizing fan stall in multiple fan ventilation networks, a research project was initiated through the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Mine Systems Design and Ground Control. Considering that fan stall is related to multiple operating points, this paper discusses a numerical model for multiple fan ventilation networks, and numerical methods for solving multiple networks solutions. It is hoped that the results of this project will lead to an innovative method of ventilation network analysis and simulation, thus preventing stall.

Lead and Zinc concentrates are being recovered at Rajpura- Dariba (Distt. Rajsamand, Rajasthan, India) from a complex multi metal sulphide deposit since 1984 by selective flotation employing a large number of reagents. The cost of concentrates' production has been high. Due to the increased availability of concentrates world over and to be competitive, it is necessary to reduce cost of production. An effort has been made by the R.D. Department of Hindustan Zinc Limited to bring down the cost by resorting to production of Bulk Pb + Zn concentrate with enough Ag to make it attractive to the smelters. This paper gives an account of open cycle testing and locked cycle testing in the Dowa Continous Mini Flotation unit. The metallurgical data generated in the mini flotation unit indicate the possibility of obtaining smelter-acceptable bulk concentrates containing Pb+Zn 45%, Ag 400 ppm and graphite carbon about 3%. An in-plant trial in the 3000 TPD concentrator indicated that there would be savings through dispensing with and reduction in some reagents, lower power requirement, etc. Also, a substantial increase in revenue is expected due to higher recoveries by resorting to bulk concentrate production as against individual concentrates.

An attempt has been made to parameterize the population balance model for a ball mill based on measurements of the elementary breakage process obtained using an ultrafast load cell device. Detailed insight obtained concerning the fragmentation of particle assemblies with the ultrafast load cell leads to a better understanding of ball mill grinding. The ball mill breakage function and specific selection function are derived from an average single event representing the multiple breakage events which occur in ball mill grinding. Since both the breakage function and the specific selection function depend on the loading mode in the mill, predictions of breakage mechanisms in ball mills are possible by using data obtained in various elementary loading modes. The application of this model to the description of batch ball milling behavior has resulted in reasonably accurate predictions of product size distributions for various energy inputs.

Newmont Gold has advantageously used the capabilities of mineral oxidizing bacteria to develop a process for the pretreatment of low-grade sulfidic and carbonaceous-sulfidic refractory gold ores. The biooxidation process results in the oxidation of the sulfidic minerals with increased exposure of gold for subsequent gold recovery. The biooxidized carbonaceous-sulfidic ores cannot be heap leached with cyanide because of the preg-robbing characteristics of the carbonaceous matter in the ores. Therefore, an alternative heapleach process using ammonium thiosulfate was developed to extract gold from these preg-robbing biooxidized ores. The ammonium thiosulfate leach process was successfully applied in both laboratory and pilot plant tests. Satisfactory test results were achieved, encouraging the continuation of process development.

For many years, the combined efforts of machinery manufacturers and mine operators have endeavored to achieve greater productivity from the men involved and the machinery and capital invested, by developing methods to drill blast holes more effectively. Obviously, this means much more than simply developing a drill that will drill a single hole faster. Considerable attention over these years has also been given to methods of carrying and positioning the drilling machine on versatile jumbos, whereby the man's time can he better utilized by the faster drilling machines. Likewise, the art of blasting to utilize the holes that were drilled to achieve the maximum amount of fragmented ore and the methods of moving the broken ore have also progressed. But each phase of the production cycle just described must be made to balance with the other phases of the work. Obviously, major breakthroughs in only one phase don't always generate more "rock in the box" per manshift. Yet, through the persistent effort of the machinery developers and the researchers, the progressive attitudes of mine managers, backed by corporate capital investments, and battle after battle at the operating level, progress is made. Then, if the innovated system is good enough to "stick", in a few years it becomes the system that the newer method must replace, after the same repeated struggle. This is the situation that many mine operators find themselves in today, Looking at their production cycle, which is assumed to be efficient and balanced between drilling, blasting and materials moving capabilities, they tend to guard any visable disruption of the balance of that day's production, and many would prefer to maintain the status quo indefinitely. This paper describes an experimental setup for multiple fan ventilation systems at the ventilation laboratory of the West Virginia University Department of Mining Engineering. Housed in a 30-ft x 70 -ft room, the experimental setup consists of three 18-in., variable-speed, axial flow fans; an 18-in. -diam, fiberglass tubing; associated fittings for arranging networks; and a picot-tube measuring and data-acquisition system. The fiberglass tubing and fans can be organized into non-planar networks of two or three fans. The setup is mainly designed for studying the characteristic curves, operating points and fan stall for multiple fan ventilation systems.

When plotted as head vs. volume, fan curves start high and decrease with increasing volume, while mine head curves start low and rise with increasing volume. Their intersection is the system operating point. However, as every ventilation instructor knows, the fact that head loss is a negative number (debit) and fan head is an energy addition (credit) is often a stumbling block to student or audience comprehension since the curves seem to reflect the opposite. It is possible to use the intuitively correct curves- pressure losses as negative values and energy additions as positive values - and still obtain the correct operating point. Adding the two curves produces a third curve that intersects the x-axis at the operating point, the point at which the fan energy input exactly matches air circulation energy loss. Using this technique also makes it easier to account for outside influences on the system, such as natural ventilating pressure. With the standard approach, it is quite easy to add or subtract such influences to the wrong curve. This approach can be extended to the graphical solution of any series/parallel ventilation network. The results are the same, and the approach is logically consistent and less confusing.

Microscale studies involving an ultrafast load cell have been shown to provide direct and accurate measurements of particle strength, particle fracture energy and particle breakage functions under different loading geometry conditions. The effect of grinding media size, shape, density and surface properties on the energy efficiency can be quantitatively determined for different materials to be ground. The applications of microscale comminution studies have been demonstrated to provide good predictions of grinding mill performance with different grinding media.

Maptek, an international development software company, released version 3.2 of its Vulcan three-dimensional mining and geological software package. This latest release is expected to give clients better graphics performance and improved overall solutions. In addition, the company also released the NT version of Vulcan for Unix and personal computers. More than 800 code changes have gone into the 3.2 release, the Lakewood, CO-based company said. Many of these changes were in response to requests from Maptek's customers. Others have been motivated internally by the company to achieve better performance in its Envisage graphics interface. The introduction of hot keys and user-defined menus makes Envisage a more flexible interface and a more productive working environment. A new animation option provides new ways to enhance the organization and display of data. The animated data can include point, string, grid, triangulation and photographic-draped data. The shaft-mapping facility is also included in version 3.2. It enables the cylindrical view of the shaft to be unwrapped and displayed on the screen while the data remains in its true world coordinates. Major upgrades to Vulcan include underground blast design and geotechnical modules. The new blast design module allows the user to develop a ring design in any plane defined by the stope layout. Radial and offset holes can be developed. User-friendly editing tools make adjustments to the initial design a simple task. The user defines the plotting and reporting of rings and plot style templates allow flexibility in reporting. New features in the geotechnical toolbox include options to create daylight windows and pitch lines on the stereo nets. Geotechnical databases can be directly updated from the interpretation of the stereo net. Direct annotation of the symbols on the net is now possible and the stereo net display can be customized. Improvements to the documentation and links within the text have made the on-line help easier to navigate. Maptek also released the NT version of Vulcan soft- ware. The comprehensive design of the software pack- age for Unix and personal computers provides a three-dimensional geological modeling and mine planning system within a natural graphics environment. Users who require the power to manipulate extra- large and complex data sets will still be served by the Unix platform. Users who handle small-to-large datasets can now choose between Unix and personal computer platforms. The NT version will appeal primarily to companies that already have a personal computer network. Response to industry feedback was the basis for developing the NT version. "We want to ensure that our clients receive the optimal product for their needs," said Nicolas Simon, vice president of Maptek in North America. Some advantages of the NT version include: ? Most mining professionals are familiar with the personal computer platform. ? All of the familiar personal computer tools are now available to Vulcan users. ? Resource modeling tools that previously required the powerful Unix workstations have been brought into the personal computer environment. This will help mining companies save money. Two key strategies for a new generation of mining are developing domestic raw material production and doing so in an environmentally responsible way, according to presenters at the 83rd annual meeting of the SME Minnesota Section in Duluth (the 71st annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium). From technical sessions detailing how to build com-munity support, to a short course on international perspectives in iron ore mining and processing, the two-day meeting emphasized the potential of Minnesota state deposits and the importance of maintaining productive community relations both locally and globally. The meeting of more than 300 mining industry professionals began on April 20 with a traditional convocation celebrating the values of northern Minnesota. The accompanying tradeshow, with a record 131 booths, showed the speed and vigor of the economic rebound. Keynote speaker Scott Anderson, vice president and senior economist at Wells Fargo, stated the prevailing mood of the conference: ?Wow, what a difference a year makes.? With metal prices and sales up and heading higher, he said, it was clear that the production-centered economic recovery is reaching the mining and the minerals industry. However, Anderson sounded a few notes of caution. Serious threats to economic stability remain, including the burgeoning national de?cit, high unemployment and the still out-of-control foreclosure crisis. Overall, he predicted a below-average recovery and stressed the importance of developing a long-term business strategy.

Dragados USA is constructing the LA Effluent Outfall Tunnel, a 7-mile, 18 ft internal diameter effluent discharge tunnel, utilizing a 21.6 ft (6.585 m) Herrenknecht Mixshield TBM. This paper highlights the means and methods used for TBM launch from a 55 ft diameter shaft excavated in wet with diaphragm wall support of excavation. This included SEM excavation of jet grout blocks for starter and tail tunnels, temporary concrete structures and steel installations, TBM sealing system, umbilical management for TBM hydraulic, electric and bentonite circuits as well as complex segment delivery logistics. The many launching challenges were overcome thanks to the innovative approaches from the project team.

Developing a mining venture in a foreign country, particularly in South Africa, can be a real challenge to those involved in the operation. The mining division of Southland Energy Corp. was asked to offer consultative support to the New Union Gold Mine, located in the Giyani District, Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, to aid in their expansion from an approximately 65 tonne per day exploration- exploitation project into a full scale mining operation of 300 tpd by January, 1987 with further expansion to 600 tpd by mid-year. This paper ad- dresses the development of the expansion plans, which are presently being implemented. History. Located in the Northern Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, the New Union Gold Mine is part of what is known as the Klein Letaba gold fields. Gold prospecting in the Klein Letaba gold field area dates back to the earliest years of European prospecting activities in the Transvaal where, reportedly, gold was discovered as early as 1887 (figure 1). The claims com- prising the present New Union Gold Mine have been explored by a number of individuals and relatively small mining groups since the early 1930's. The work done by these entities was aimed at recovering as much gold as possible in the quickest and cheapest manner possible and, as a result, the area was not explored in a systematic fashion. The long-term potential of the area, therefore, was not known until very recently.

Ore processing requirements in the gold industry are similar to those in other sectors of the minerals industry. In all cases, the processes revolve around the handling of large volumes of ore slurry, incorporating either physical processing or chemical processing steps which are related to distinct mixing application classes as defined in Table 1. From this standpoint, the complexity of the applications range from the simple (blending, solid suspension, etc.) to the complex (e.g., multi-phase reactor systems). The large volume of material to be processed dictates the large equipment size which is characteristic of this industry, and the often remote locations place a premium on both mechanical and process reliability.

Most coillillercial processing applications employing mixers in various types of slurry systems are continuous flow. These applications may also be multiple stage, with the stage number varying anywhere from two or three to ten or more. Two questions that usually come up at the beginning of any proposed pilot plant study are (1) can the pilot plant unit be operated batch-wise, and the results extrapolated both on the basis of scale and fluid motion to the full-scale tank which will be continuous-flow (and probably multi-stage), or (2) does the pilot plant need to be operated in a continuous-flow fashion, and if so, does the exact number of tanks/stages that are proposed for the plant need to be used in the pilot plant? We will consider these possibilities in sequence and present the principles involved in running some of the various pilot-plant arrangements.
