Commercially mined calcium carbonate is normally found near the surface in the United States. It is nun& either by open pit or underground methods, depending upon its geologic setting. Processing ranges from simple crushing to the more sophisticated ultrafine processes. Intermediate steps are pulverizing, screening, beneficiation, classification, fine and ultrafine grinding, and surface treating. These processes are performed both dry and/or wet resulting in powdered or slurry end products.

A new database application for long term production scheduling has been developed for LKAB's Kiruna mine. The scheduler uses a new block data structure whereby the monthly production data for three raw ore products are predetermined on a month-by-month basis for each production area that could be mined within the schedule time horizon. The production schedule is created by assigning the starting dates to the each production area subject to various mining operational constraints such that that the monthly deviations for the production targets are minimized. The system is well integrated into the mine's overall computerized mine planning system.

The frictional resistance to motion of a belt conveyor has always been a subject of intensive studies and research by engineers throughout the years. At our annual meeting in St, Louis, Mo. in February 1961, we presented a comprehensive paper (No. 61-B-22) on the subject of "Blending and Handling of Materials for Agglomeration". In that paper you will find a discussion on the difference between "blending" and "mixing". With regard to "blending" we brought out the facts of its usefulness for the preparation o materials in an agglomerated mass to attain controlled chemical and physical uniformity. "Mixing" was discredited as not being useful for the attainment of uniformity of any kind.

This investigation included a study of three different methods for the acoustic drying of ultrafine coals. Ultrafine coal being defined as coal which passes through a 100 mesh sieve. The first method employed stationary drying of small coal samples in sound fields having frequencies of 12,000 cps and 20,000 cps. Sound intensities up to 150 db were used. The second method employed the use of rotary drying kilns. The effect of such variables as temperature, sound intensity, coal feed rate, air flow rate, and initial moisture content were studied. The third method employed the use of a multi-tiered, vibrating screen dryer. The effect of initial moisture content and residence time were studied.

The Upper Silesian Coal Basin is located in the area of the Upper Silesian Syncline and belongs to one of the most complex tectonic units in Europe. It occupies 5,650 km2. In 2020, there were 20 hard coal mines operating in the area. Seismological research in this area consists of observation of precursors/symptoms of shock generation and understanding of their effects. Studies (Teisseyre R. 1972, Mutke G. & Stec K. 1997, Stec K. 2007, Dubiński J. & other 2010, Idziak A. 2010) of complex impacts of rock mass provided a background for determining the conditions for the formation of exploitation and regional seismic shocks. Issues related to tectonic and exploitation stresses, successive extraction of coal seams at higher depths, operation in the vicinity of fault zones, often complex geological and organic conditions result in the activation of a discontinuity surface due to stress caused by deformation of rock layers, which, as a result, causes the emergence of strong shocks above 107 J. The article was based on analyses of extraction value, high-energy shocks, both of mining and tectonic-mining (so-called regional shocks) origin, against the background of changing operating conditions, which, as a result, creates an image of periodically changing seismic activity and location of strong shocks. Observation results show that, with an increase in exploitation depth and declining extraction, the number of strong shocks caused by tectonic stress (107 - 109 J) and exploitation stress (≥105 J) has been steadily increasing over the last 25 years.

This is a brief state of the art paper describing current (1975) Uranium recovery plant flowsheets, some notes on system selection, design philosophies, and materials of construction. The in-situ, or borehole solution mining, of Uranium is a process which has been developed over recent years to better match Uranium mining and milling technology with the size, shape, grade and territorial distribution of the remaining identified Uranium deposits of western United States. Solution mining recovery plants are pure hydrometallurgical units ideally suited to automation, modular design, and mobility. Similar to conventional Uranium mills, two basic flowsheets, one acid and one carbonate, are in use, but the predominance is reversed so that the majority of plants employ the alkaline carbonate flowsheet, All plants incorporate resin bead ion exchange Uranium recovery for both acid and alkaline circuits.

A description is given of an experimental ventilation control system designed, built, and tested by WVU under United States Bureau of Mines sponsorship. A description is given of the control, system used and the mine-wide microcomputer-based ventilation monitoring system used with it. Test results of experiments conducted with this system at Eastern Associated Coal Corporation's Federal No. 2 underground coal mine are presented. In addition, a brief description is given of a new microprocessor based system presently being tested.

Cyclones installed in three closed- circuit grinding systems were changed from conventional, vertical mounting to horizontal mounting with a favorable improvement in classification efficiency. In two of the installations, apex plugging problems were eliminated because horizontal mounting permit- ted the use of much larger apex orifices. Marked reduction in circulating load was accompanied by greatly reduced maintenance requirements for the cyclone and the cyclone feed pump in one of the installations.

Despite the importance of froth flotation to the mineral industries as a means of separating various minerals, the commercial flotation reagents used have varied little in the last twenty years. Numerous articles and books are available describing existing flotation chemistry and its application, e.g., Fuerstenau (1962), Fuerstenau (1976), Aplan (1980), Somasundaran (1980), King (1982), Leja (1982), Ackerman, et. al. (1984), Crozier (1984), Hansen and Klimpel (1985). There are many reasons for this lack of significant new reagent development including the general utility and relative cheapness of collectors, such as xanthates, and frothers, such as methyl isobutyl carbinol and the glycol ethers. Another important reason is the inherent complexity of the flotation process itself coupled with highly variable and difficult to standardize feed materials which make reliable reagent comparisons difficult and seriously limit the use of theoretically based studies to "predict" new or optimal reagents. In addition, the higher cost of "specialty flotation reagents demands that their performance attributes be significantly greater than existing general all- purpose commercial reagents – something often difficult to prove in practice. Faced with this situation, a detailed applications research pro- gram [Klimpel (1980 ab, 1982, 1984 ab), Klimpel, et. al. (1982)] was organized from 1979-1985 on mineral flotation with the following goals: 1) the development of appropriate batch laboratory flotation testing techniques sensitive enough and statistically reliable enough to identify small differences in performance between different flotation tests (i.e., between various reagents, even those with relatively minor chemical structural changes); 2) the identification of mathematical models with appropriate numbers and types of parameters that have maximum statistical power to statistically distinguish between various time-recovery profiles; 3) the generation of laboratory and corresponding plant scale data in sufficient quantity and consistency so that the highly interactive nature of the "flotation system9' of chemistry/ equipment/operating conditions could be quantified; and 4) the invention and development of really new and unique reagents for giving improved flotation performance. The results obtained from hatch, flotation experiments on two coals were used to develop relationships between the recoveries of water and solids into the concentrate. When the recovery of non-ash material (RN) for any size fraction is plotted against a parameter X, defined as [x _ Amount of (W) recovered x Collector dosage (C)in the concentrate (cc)(kg/t)] a single "non-ash recovery curve" is obtained. Non-ash recovery curves thus obtained from different size fractions are used to get a unique "modified non-ash recovery curve" for a given coal, using the reduced efficiency curve concept. Similar observations have been noted in the case of recovery of ash material (RA) also. The amount of water recovered into the concentrate is plotted against a parameter "Water Recovery Factor (WRF)," defined as [WRF = T.F.(1+C)] where T is time (in sec) and F is frother dosage (in kg/t). Plotted in this form a characteristic water recovery curve, for a given coal is obtained that may be defined by the following equation: [W4=W_(1 pWRF-e] The above relationships have been verified against the experimental results obtained from three more coals and are found to give satisfactory predicted values.

The commissioning of a distributed digital control system for the grinding circuit at Cuajone was completed by mid-August 1985. Development of a successful strategy, excellent operator acceptability, and the visual aspects offered by the display of the central console improved mill through- put significantly. The inherent features of a digital system enhanced the flexibility in grinding control and allowed the milk and classifiers to be operated at maximum capacity. This paper discusses the strategy development and the production restrictions encountered, and evaluates the overall performance of the digital control system.

A recently developed model is used as a tool to optimize blast designs based on the continuing combination of full scale blast assessment and performance prediction. The use of this tool has allowed to evaluate present blasting practices and proposed designs through a better under-standing of the influence of the various blast parameters. The empirical model has a modular structure covering all aspects of blast performance including 30 fragmentation, potential rock damage and 30 muckpile profile prediction. The modules are assisted by a terrain model which is compatible to most mine mapping systems, and a blast design editor. The evaluation is summarized in a blast management module. Various studies have recently been undertaken using the model to qualify and improve blast designs with respect to wall stability, optimized fragmentation and muckpile distribution, as well as to the control of the environmental effects such as blast vibration and airblast overpressure. To verify the predictions of the modeling, full scale blast assessment techniques were used to qualify blast geometry, explosives and initiation performance, rock movement, muckpile distribution, near- and far-field vibration levels and airblast ovepressures. The model provides a tool to gain an improved understanding of blasting and blast control. The modeling results are presented in a visual form which allows simple comparisons of proposed blast designs. Additionally, the model can be used for detailed analysis and blast management.

A Knowledge of the amount of time the material spends in a continuous mill in a closed-grinding-circuit is essential for circuit performance analysis and scale-up design. A convenient method for acquiring this information involves the use of tracers in residence-time-distribution (RTD) experiments. In a typical wet process the RTD measurements are usually done by injecting a pulse tracer into the mill inlet and detecting it in the circuit exit. In this article a simple to use mathematical method for the calculation of the closed circuit material residence time in the mill is developed. Using this method there are no restrictions on the location of the tracer injection or detection points. Any convenient location in the closed circuit can be chosen without affecting the simplicity of the method. This method also enables the calculation of the degree of mixing in the mill. The use of this method for the analysis of impulse response data obtained from several commercial grinding circuits is presented.

The results of the tests are encouraging, and indicate that further exploration of the method should be continued.

In planning an underground room and pillar mine, the selection of the shaft or portal location and the orientation of the main haulage arteries is of paramount importance, particularly in view of the high dependence of the cost of truck haulage on the proper definition of these parameters. In an effort to facilitate this selection a computer program was written which, by relating the truck characteristics to the areal configuration of the property or ore-body, derives the volume-weighted total fuel and time requirements for hauling ore from every panel within the property to a specified portal or shaft location through a predetermined gridwork of haulage drifts. By varying the size and orientation of the gridwork and the location of the portal or shaft access, an infinite number of configurations can be investigated. The results of this analysis can be plotted to indicate the optimum conditions.

Additional progress in comminution can be achieved if the compressive crushing principle commonly used at present is changed to one where particles are fragmented by the tensile growth of preexisting internal flaws or cracks, under internal waterjet pressure. This idea was studied in a number of tests and generated results and conclusions are the subject of this paper. It covers tests with different jets imposed on rock samples during compressive load as well as without any loading.

Approximately 3 percent of the raw coal processed in U. S. Steel coal-preparation plants ultimately reports to slurry- tailing disposal. The usual disposal method is to pump the refuse slurry containing the minus-48 mesh (300 µm) refuse into dams or impoundments that are constructed of the coarse refuse. The failure of an impoundment at Buffalo Creek, Saunders, West Virginia and the sliding failure of a coarse refuse pile at Aberfan, Wales, England, resulted in an evaluation of refuse disposal methods by various regulatory agencies as well as coal producers. The result of this evaluation was the promulgation of Federal regulations dealing with the construction, operation, and final abandonment of coal refuse disposal areas. As a consequence of these regulations the use of the landfill/impoundment method of disposal became in some cases economically urlfeasible or technically impossible. U, S. Steel has studied a number of alternative methods of refuse disposal. During an investigation of mechanical dewatering with a pressure filter, Portland cement was added to the slurry to solidify the filter cake. Because of the success of the cement addition it was decided to study the stabilization of fine-coal-refuse slurry through use of cement-type additives.

Aggregate resources should be considered primary factors in urban development. Resource planning is essential because land values, previous construction, or zoning restrictions often preempt exploitation of aggregate deposits within an urban area. Sequential land use practices allow development of areas prior to urban development. Population and aggregate consumption trends in Austin, Texas, indicate that substantial quantities of reserves will be lost to future development. Aggregate materials are present in nearby seas. However, a comparison of transportation and reclamation costs indicates that reclaiming land after mineral extraction can be significantly cheaper than transporting materials longer distances.
