"In 2015, the estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States decreased by 3 percent from that in 2014 (Table 1), mainly as a result of decreased metal and metallic mineral prices, especially iron ore, copper and precious metals. Lower metal prices were attributed to decreased consumption, especially in China and increased global inventories. Several U.S. metal mines were idled in 2015, including the only U.S. rare earths mine at Mountain Pass, CA. Downstream processors also were affected, with smelters and refiners either shutting down or idling production lines. Increases, however, took place in the value and quantity of production of industrial minerals, especially those used in the construction sector, including cement, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy, except for iron and steel manufacturing, aluminum manufacturing, coal mining and metals mining, all experienced growth (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of construction aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1).Mineral industry performanceThe estimated value of domestic nonfuel mineral production, including metals ($26.6 billion) and industrial minerals ($51.7 billion), in 2015 declined to a total of $78.3 billion, from $80.8 billion in 2014 (Table 1). However, as shown in Fig. 2, minerals remained fundamental to the United States economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Net exports of mineral raw materials and old scrap were $14.4 billion. Domestic raw materials, along with domestically recycled materials, were used to produce mineral materials worth $630 billion. These mineral materials, including aluminum, brick, copper, fertilizers and steel, and net imports of processed materials (worth about $32 billion) were, in turn, consumed by downstream industries with a value added to the gross domestic product estimated to be $2,490 billion."

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Recent three-dimensional surveying techniques have opened up new opportunities for the registration and monitoring of underground cavities. There are essentially two main methods available: Laser scanning, which is used both above surface and increasingly underground, and photogrammetry, which is also experiencing a renaissance with techniques like structure from motion through the algorithm-based orientation of high-resolution images. Both methods provide the capability to reconstruct reality by various 3-D products like points clouds and meshed models. However, they differ significantly in the steps of registration and calculation as well as in the resulting evaluation options.

Microseismic monitoring and evaluation is one aspect of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research program. Roof falls are often preceded by a period of elevated microseismic activity, but not all periods of elevated activity result in a roof fall, nor do all roof falls occur after some amount of elevated activity. The objective of this study is to review periods of elevated microseismic activity and determine whether fracture activity rate can be used to anticipate the initiation of roof falls. The study was carried out at an underground limestone mine where major roof falls are associated with excessive horizontal stress. The progression of roof falls was detected by the microseismic signature produced by the rock falling from the mine roof onto the mine floor, which is termed a roof fall impact event. A total of nine elevated fracture activity periods that resulted in seven major roof falls were examined. It was observed that elevated fracture activity preceded the initial roof fall impact event in three out of four major roof falls. The initial impact event was not identified for the remaining three roof falls. Fracture event rates were analyzed and a roof fall alarm trigger of five fracture events in a ten minute time period was established for this test case. The fall alarm trigger was tested against six of the elevated activity periods. Four roof falls occurred in the six periods of elevated activity, and two would have triggered the alarm before the roof fall occurred, while two false alarms were generated. The results show that limited success would have been achieved by the microseismic system as a roof fall alarm trigger. However, the trigger would have been successful at warning of the onset of elevated activity, allowing mine employees to respond appropriately. The study highlighted some issues with implementing such a system in an operating mine, including the need for real time identification of fracture related microseismic signals among mining induced signals, and accurate location and identification of fracture clustering.

In bump-prone coal mines, roof and rib support is subject to dynamic as well as static loading. Although less frequently encountered, the dynamic loading component can result in violent coal expulsions into openings seriously threatening the safety of workers. Dynamic support systems that have been increasingly implemented in many deep hard rock mines for dynamic failure containment have not yet found their adaptation to deep coal mines at desired levels. This paper examines the potential use of some of these dynamic support systems in deep coal mining, particularly in the western United States. Fundamental principles of dynamic loading are reviewed in the context of their application to dynamic failure mechanisms in coal mines. Potential benefits and applicability of the suitable hard rock dynamic support systems are discussed in relation to coal bump mitigation. The resulting insight provides a starting point for development of dynamic support elements for bump prone conditions in deep coal mines.

A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

The multiple-criteria decision analysis is a technique that helps to find an optimal solution by evaluating conflicting criteria. In this study, an approach to perform multiple-criteria decision analysis for cut-off grade optimization, which considers the diverse stakeholder groups prevalent in the mining industry, is presented. The optimization model developed in this approach links the resource block model to the financial model, enabling the process to either maximize profit, net present value, revenue to the State, or extend the mine's life. To identify the optimal cut-off grade in each case, the Excel Solver function is utilized. Although it has limitations, the Solver function can still be modified to handle models with thousands of block values for determining input variables based on the target value. Following stakeholder engagement and dialogue, a single weighted average cut-off grade can then be determined. This approach is demonstrated for nine South African Witwatersrand gold mines.

Faults under high rock cover represent some of the most severe ground conditions a Tunneler can encounter. High ground water pressures and flows are usually associated with mountain faults. Ground behavior can range from blocky ground to flowing sands and squeezing clays. Sticking a IBM within a fault zone for many weeks, with the disastrous financial consequences, is still a common occurrence. Interpreting the geology and detecting the location of a fault prior to penetrating it is a fundamental step to successful tunneling. Ground water control through predraining or pre-grouting is the second fundamental step. This paper discusses techniques applied for detecting and crossing mountainous fault zones through the use of case histories across the globe.

Background Population growth and increasingly stringent regulatory controls on water quality across North America have resulted in municipal governments investing heavily in infrastructure to control what are known as Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs).These are events which occur when combined sewers exceed their conveyance capacity during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt. The city of Atlanta, Georgia is one such municipality; with a population of over450,000 within city limits and a sewer system servicing 1.2 million including adjacent jurisdictions, the City of Atlanta has a Combined Sewer System (CSS) encompassing approximately 15% of its total 3,540 km (2,200 miles) of sewers. Atlanta’s CSO discharges to local watercourses began to draw fire from environmental groups in the1980s. As a result, in the early 1990s, the City constructed a series of CSO control facilities which provided screening and chlorination at seven CSO discharge points across the CSS watershed. Unfortunately, these facilities were not capable of handling all of the overflows generated due to heavy storm events; frequently, untreated water was bypassed around the treatment facilities. The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deemed that water quality standards were being violated by these discharges, and a suit was brought against the City to force a higher standard of compliance. As a result, the City entered into a federal Consent Decree which would bring CSOs into compliance with federal standards by 2007. A critical component of this plan was the design and construction of the West Area CSO Tunnels and Pumping Station. In February 2003 the City’s Department of Watershed Management retained the services of Jordan Jones & Goulding/Hatch Mott MacDonald/Delon Hampton Associates (JDH Joint Venture) to design and provide construction management ser-vices for the project, which was designed to capture combined sewage from three of the City’s existing CSO facilities on the northern end of the CSS watershed. The design consisted of two connected tunnels which would convey the wastewater originating from the North Avenue, Clear Creek, and Tanyard Creek CSO facilities to a submersible wet well pumping station located at the R.M. Clayton Water Reclamation Center (WRC). Since the majority of the effluent stream consisted of storm water, the City elected to design and construct a separate treatment plant. This plant was designed under a separate contract, and is currently under construction.

In this study, recovery of copper from solid material (obtained by leaching of chalcopyrite with oxalic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) with a copper oxalate structure was carried out selectively using HCl. The chemical composition of the solid was as 29.3%, 9.7%, and 13.3% for Cu, Fe, and S, respectively. Selective recovery of copper by degrading the copper oxalate structure with a low-solubility product (Ksp = 4.43 × 10−10) was performed by conventional leaching in the presence of HCl. The optimum leaching conditions were determined as 5 M of HCl concentration, 318 K of leaching temperature, 120 min of leaching time, 25 ml/g of liquid–solid ratio and 400 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, approximately 77% of copper and 3% of iron were taken into the solution. According to the characterization of the leach residue that was obtained, the oxalate structure was degraded. Moreover, the results of XRD analysis showed that the sulfur (S) and cubanite (CuFe2S3) phases were mostly observed in leaching residues, and this was supported by the SEM-EDX data. Based on the results, it may be stated that selective copper extraction can be obtained from a chalcopyrite concentrate by a two-step leaching method using a conventional hydrometallurgical technique.

Selecting a minicomputer is not unlike selecting a costly piece of mining equipment such as a truck, shovel, crusher, or conveyor belt system. A marked difference might lie in the frequency at which such selection takes place; another difference might be mine management's familiarity with mining equipment vis a vis a minicomputer. These basic differences might prompt a mining company to seek the aid of a consultant when selecting a minicomputer system. Advantages and Disadvantages The fundamental advantage of employing an independent consultant is that it provides management with a source of knowledge and breadth of experience not readily available within the organization. If the consultant has a minerals background, such knowledge and experience are further enhanced by actual experience in exploration, mining, and mineral processing. If the consultant has worked within a mining company, such hands-on experience is supplemented with a meaningful understanding of the client's business; this facilitates communication between the consultant and members of the client organization. The consultant has been, so to speak, "in the client's shoes." There are several other advantages. Since computer systems cut across organizational boundaries, the independent consultant may be able to move within the organization more easily than an inside staff person to collect necessary information. Also, detachment from any manufacturer should provide the client with an objectivity and a set of recommendations as near optimal as feasible. The principal disadvantages lie in the area of continuity and accountability. Once the consultant's report has been submitted and his recommendations implemented, a discontinuity might occur. Also, if implementation does not provide the desired results, the consultant might not be available to correct the situation or account for actions taken. Proper selection of consultant services, relative to kind and duration, and the consultant's method of operation, will often prevent many of these aftereffects. Services Offered The professional consultant can help a client: •Define and summarize information systems technology* needs; • Evaluate alternatives such as in-house capability and capacity, time-sharing, or service bureaus; • Prepare a formal request for proposal (RFP) to be submitted to vendors; •Evaluate vendor proposals; •Evaluate the economics of lease vs. purchase; and •Assist in the conversion and installation. Thus, consulting services may range from evaluating an existing system and upgrading to a larger piece of equipment, to selecting a new first-for-the-organization computer. First, Define and Summarize Needs Regardless of circumstances, the most valuable document required before equipment selection is the information system plan (I/S plan). It helps insure that the company's information needs are met in a cost-effective manner. An I/S plan is usually a comporient of the mining company's overall business goals. Since an I/S plan is a formal vehicle for establishing and communicating the direction the organization intends to take to satisfy information requirements needed to achieve goals and objectives, most initial systems services are likely to center around creating such a document or updating an existing document. The trend toward company-wide I/S planning is increasing in the mining industry; however, smaller scale efforts focused at the information systems needs to support an individual

Deep-sea mineral SMS deposits present some of the world’s most challenging conditions for drilling equipment. As robotic seabed drilling services mature so too the ways that clients engage with service providers to maximise their data requirements. This presentation reviews key considerations for planning and executing a successful seabeddrilling program in variable mineralised deposits. Some of the means of collaboration between robotic seabed drilling contractors and those hiring their services are explored; where improved efficiencies and recoveries over the period of a drilling programme could be achieved. Potentially new technology or methodology can be looked at to further improve these approaches.

The Hatch Mott MacDonald/Bechtel Joint Venture team is designer and construction manager for the 5.25-mile Tunnel Segment of the overall 16-mile Silicon ValleyRapid Transit Project, which extends the existing Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system southward from Fremont to San Jose. The Tunnel Segment includes twin boredtunnels, mined cross passages, and three deep station excavations situated in highlyvariable ground, high ground water table, and a dense urban setting with high-risebuildings adjacent to the largest excavation. This paper will discuss design challengesthat have arisen with the excavations and the proposed solutions.

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. Today's highly mechanized Canadian open pits use state-of-the-art equipment and support technology. They are taking advantage of larger equipment, including in pit crushing and conveying, truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. Mine planning is computerized. Environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning, and equipment modifications are pursued to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian north. In 1991, Canada's mineral production (excluding fuels but including coal) totaled $C 16.9 billion, a decline of 13.8% from the 1990 total of $C19.6 billion. It is a major producer of nickel, zinc, asbestos, potash, molybdenum and uranium. Canada is also an important source of copper and iron ore (Fig. 1).

Introduction The pressure/vacuum (p/v) lysimeter or soil water sampler has become useful for monitoring vadose zone or unsaturated zone water conditions. The soil water sampler was first introduced around 1961. It was used as a monitoring and research device for studies in agriculture and soil contamination around landfills. Since then, it has been used for many purposes. The use of p/v lysimeters at mining facilities to monitor for solution loss is a relatively new idea. The primary purpose of the lysimeter here is to function as an early warning system. It detects leakage through liners of tailings ponds, heap leach pads, and leachate holding ponds. Their use has proven valuable for collecting baseline data and detecting loss of precious leachate fluid. Different lysimeter designs are capable of vadose moisture sampling from near the surface and down to 90 m (300 ft). They are also capable of sampling soil moisture or saturation plume contaminants from areas not accessible by conventional water well installations. The most common installations are usually simple and cost-effective. In many cases, they can be installed without the use of heavy drilling equipment. A properly placed and installed lysimeter can detect solution leaks in several days or weeks. A conventional perimeter monitor well may take months or years to detect a leak of the same magnitude. A discussion on the general design and installation of p/v lysimeters will give an understanding of its versatility. Three case studies of lysimeter installations at mining sites will be examined in detail. Design, Installation, and Sampling Design The basic design of a p/v lysimeter chamber consists of a porous material through which the soil is drawn into a collection chamber. Access tubes run from the unit to the sample station at the ground surface. Most units currently available range from 25 to 76 mm-diam (1 to 3 in.-diam). The sample collection chamber, or body, can vary from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2 to 6 ft) in length. The body can be constructed of PVC casing or Teflon, depending on the installation desired. The collection chamber functions as a holding reservoir for the collected soil moisture. The intake, or porous material, on the lysimeter is the most complex and vulnerable portion of the unit. The pore size selection varies based on the needs of the installation, type of fluid to be sampled, and type of soil material surrounding the unit. Teflon (PTFE) and porous ceramic are used in fabrication of the porous inlet portion. When using a Teflon material, which is hydrophobic, a larger pore size of 70 µm is needed to overcome surface tension and draw water into the collection chamber. It is typically used at sites involving organic contamination, because of its inert properties. Ceramic material is generally hydrophilic, having less surface tension. Therefore, it has a smaller porosity range to conduct the moisture through the porous medium while under vacuum. Pore sizes may be selected from 0.16 to 6 µm, and can be manufactured for the specific needs of the installation. The final major design component of the p/v lysimeter is the access or sampling tubes. The tubes are usually of 6.3-mm-outside-diam. (0.25-in.-outside-diam). The US economy continued to grow steadily in 1988, reaching an annual rate of $5 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion = 1012). The value of domestically processed mineral-based materi¬als rose 20% to $300 billion (US billion 109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 40% to more than $10 billion, industrial minerals rose 6%' to $20 billion, and recycled scrap more than doubled to $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were 95 cents and $1.68 for copper, 52 cents, and $1.30 for aluminum, 34 cents and 42 cents for lead, and 43 cents and 75 cents for zinc. A number of mining and metal companies experienced significantly increased profitability. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. About 246 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production remained at the 1987 level of 7.1 million units. Truck and bus production, however, rose 7% to 4.1 million units. New housing starts fell 7% to 1.5 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. By year-end, imports of crude and refined petroleum exceeded domestic crude oil production. Such imports cost $42 billion. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials were valued at $44 billion and exports at $35 billion. The US and Canada-the world's two largest trading partners-consummated a historic free trade agreement. In February, President Reagan transferred responsibility for stockpiling strategic and critical materials to the Secretary of Defense. And, in July, the GSA group that bought, stored, rotated, and sold stockpiled materials was transferred to the Defense Department's Defense Logistics Agency. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing attention to chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve, was amended to include provisions for averting harm to national security from foreign takeovers. The DPAct, in effect through September 1989, is now up for further extension. Under the Act, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. During the year, consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American Defense Industrial Base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 5% to 870 Mt (960 million st). Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 57% of US electricity. Exports included 56 Mt (62 million st) of metallur- gical coal and 29 Mt (32 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $4 billion. Domestic petroleum produc¬tion fell 2% to 574 hm3 (3.6 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, was unchanged at 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals Raw steel production-a major con¬sumer of many minerals-rose 14% to 92 Mt (102 million st). Domestic iron ore production rose 25% to 59 Mt (65 million st), about 96% pelletized. Net imports rose 37% to 16 Mt (18 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity of 102 Mt (112 million st) was unchanged. Voluntary Restraint Agreements with 21 steel exporting nations limited im¬port penetration to about 20% of the domestic market. To achieve compliance with 2015 EPA Tier 4 Final regulations, which permit only around 10% of Tier 3 particulate matter (PM) and NOx emissions, a number of technologies are being implemented. Use of a fuel borne nanoparticle combustion catalyst reduces the level of PM and unburned hydrocarbons exiting the combustion chamber, alleviating the burden on downstream exhaust after-treatment systems. The impact of an iron-ceria combustion catalyst (GO2) on carbon oxidation kinetics and on diesel engine emissions is presented. The iron-ceria nanoparticles catalyze carbon oxidation at lower temperatures and increase the oxidation rate by a factor of 18 at 400 °C. Engine tests on a generator powered by a John Deere Model engine and field tests on a Cummins ISC 330 tractor truck and CAT 3508B propulsion engines are presented. Use of GO2 resulted in a reduction in PM10 (particulate matter under 10 um) emissions of up to 26% and a hydrocarbon emission reduction of up to 41%. NOx emissions did not increase in these trials and the amount of change depended on engine type. Application of this fuel borne technology for emissions reductions in mining equipment offers significant benefits.

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. global mining boom and in-creased demand for iron ore has lead to a resurgence in the mining industry in Minnesota. At the combined 81st Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium, April 15-16 in Duluth, MN, this resurgence was the hot topic as new mining projects were featured in the keynote session. The meeting attracted more than 400 mining industry professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from around the world. This year?s theme was ?New Ventures in Mining.? The meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions, a keynote session that featured three distinguished speakers and a panel discussion that provided updates on new mining developments in the state. The Minnesota Section of SME technical papers were presented in concurrent sessions, one on mining and one on mineral processing. The mining session included papers on drilling, ore blending, slope stabilization, dust control and operations management. The mineral processing session included papers on plant-control technology, ball mills, pellet strength and fans. Also offered was an SME short course titled ?Simulation based pellet induration optimization.? The Minnesota Section of SME held its annual business meeting during the conference. The 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium technical sessions were held on April 15 and also consisted of concurrent sessions on mining and mineral processing. Mining session topics included logistics management, real-time performance measurement, uses for taconite aggregate and environmental issues. The mineral processing session included papers on ore liberation characteristics, zeta potential studies, induration modeling, fuel optimization and conveyor belts. The combined conference included a tradeshow with more than 80 booth spaces featuring vendors offering products and services to Minnesota?s booming mining industry. More than 900 people, including conference registrants and special invited guests of the vendors, at-tended the tradeshow opening reception. This was the largest trade show in many years ? an indication of the vitality of the mining industry in Minnesota.
