Drilling into coal mine roof strata to install roof bolts has the potential to release substantial quantities of respirable dust. Due to the proximity of drill holes to the breathing zone of roof bolting personnel, dusts escaping the holes and avoiding capture by the dust collection system pose a potential respiratory health risk. Controls are available to complement the typical dry vacuum collection system and minimize harmful exposures during the initial phase of drilling. This paper examines the use of a bit sleeve in combination with a dust hog-type bit to improve dust extraction during the critical initial phase of drilling. A twisted-body drill bit is also evaluated to determine the quantity of dust liberated by comparison to the dust hog-type bit. Based on these laboratory tests, the bit sleeve may reduce dust emissions by one-half during the initial phase of drilling before the drill bit is fully enclosed by the drill hole. Because collaring is responsible for the largest dust liberations, overall dust emissions can also be substantially reduced. The use of a twisted-body bit has minimal improvement on dust capture compared to the commonly used dust hog-type bit.

"In June or July 2005, the European Commission will present its Thematic Strategy on the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources proposal to the Council and European Parliament, one of the seven Thematic Strategies to be developed and implemented under the 6th European Environment Action Programme in support of the European Union’s Sustainable Development Strategy defined by the European Union’s Head of State at the Göteborg European Council, in June 2001. The time scale for this Thematic Strategy is 25 years (2005-2030). This paper discusses some of the key issues related to the EU minerals and metals industry that needs to be addressed by the Strategy. These are: - the need for access to mineral reserves in the EU and abroad; - the need to strenghten the capacity of developing countries to sustainably promote and regulate the use of their mineral potential; - the need for an EU mineral resources intelligence capacity. There are additional important needs, which are not discussed in this paper, such as: - the need to foster further innovation in mining, ore beneficiation and metallurgical technologies; - the need to integrate and simplify the exisitng complex regulatory framework applicable to the EU mining industry and to effectively implement existing legislation."

Risk management is an established loss-control methodology that has been applied successfully in many industries. Recently, interest in this structured approach has grown in the mining industry. The main objective of this research was to develop a risk-assessment process, which is a part of risk management, that can be used by the U.S. mining industry to more thoroughly characterize risks associated with haul truck-related fatalities. The assessment is based on historical data obtained from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) investigation reports, which includes 113 fatal incidents that occurred from 1995 through 2006. The risk-assessment process used in this research involves the following basic steps: identification of the risks, risk analysis and risk evaluation. The preliminary hazard assessment (PHA) method is used in identifying and quantifying risks. Risk levels are then developed using a pre-established risk matrix that ranks them according to probability and severity. The resulting assigned risk value can then be used to prioritize control strategies. This paper is a part of a detailed study on risk assessment for equipment-related fatalities in mining sponsored by the Western U.S. Mining Safety and Health Training and Translation Center.

INTRODUCTION The analysis and design of underground structures to resist vibratory motion due to earthquakes has been of interest to engineers for several decades. The dynamic stability of a powerhouse cavern was considered in the 1960s (Campbell and Dodd, 1967). About the same time, the designers of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit system developed procedures for analyzing the subaqueous tunnels placed under San Francisco Bay and the tunnels excavated along the land portions of the alignment (Kuesel, 1969). Japanese designers developed fairly sophisticated procedures for analyzing subaqueous tunnels during the late 1960s and early 1970s (Kuribayashi et al., 1974). In the past decade, proposals to site important critical underground facilities in regions with moderate to high seismic activity have increased the interest in earthquake engineering of underground structures. Seismic designs or seismic studies have been conducted for rock caverns for storage of petroleum or location of power plants (Yamahara et al., 1977; Glass, 1976), buried tanks for fuels or rad¬ioactive waste (Fukushima et al., 1977; URS/Blume, 1976), tunnels for disposal of nuclear waste (Yanev and Owen, 1978; Wahi et al., 1980), and urban mass transit tunnels (Monsees and Merrit, 1984). One of the greatest drivers of the interest in seismic analysis and design of underground structures has been the proposals to dispose of high-level nuclear waste in mined repositories some 300 to 600 m (approximately 1,000 to 2,000 ft) below the ground surface. In 1979, the authors, in conjunction with Professor Tor Brekke, presented a paper on an evaluation and design procedure used in a study of a proposed nuclear waste repository (Owen, Scholl, and Brekke, 1979).

The 2004 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference contained an air of optimism and excitement that has not been seen since 1997. Many segments of the mining industry are alive and well. This is largely a reflection of improved metal prices, themselves due to the strong euro and improvements in Asian economies. Those factors offset higher oil prices, a weaker U.S. dollar and concerns about the Middle East. This report is an overview of the conference. It is supplemented by an examination of conference handouts, abstracts and a few complete papers that are on the PDAC’s Web site www.pdac.ca. Sixty PDAC 2004 abstracts are available at the same site, along with 15 complete papers in PDF format. The conference was held March 7-10 in Toronto, Ontario. It was attended by a record 9,200 delegates from 85 countries. About 8,000 people from 74 countries attended the 2003 conference.

Introduction Shale Mining Problems The mining problems an oil shale operator will face are largely determined by the process. Candidate oil recovery processes are surface (above ground processing of mined oil shale), modified in situ (underground with some shale removed), and true in situ (completely underground with no shale removed). The shale removed for modified in situ (MIS) is generally processed by surface techniques. The mining problems are different for each category. Fig. 1 depicts the diversity of western shale deposits. Mining for surface operations will employ underground mining techniques in common use but the scale will be larger. A typical oil shale operation is expected to require 75,000 to 250,000 st (68 000 to 226 800 tons) a stream day of crushed oil shale. This is above the upper limit of current mining operations. Major problems in¬clude: (1) lack of good engineering design properties for oil shale, especially when interbedded with saline minerals at depths below 1,000 ft (305 m); (2) presence of water, hydrogen sulfide, and methane in some areas; (3) necessity for mine disposal of as much retorted oil shale waste as possible; and (4) control of en¬vironmental impacts of mining. Portions of the oil shale deposits in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah and significant portions of the Devonian shales in the eastern U.S. are adapted to surface mining. No major technological problems are apparent outside overburden thicknesses up to 1,000 ft in the West. However, numerous political and environmental dif¬ficulties have arisen. One major oil shale developer cancelled a planned surface mining operation and currently is pursuing a modified in-situ plan. The eastern shales are closer to the surface than the western, but suffer from many of the same environmental and political problems. Modified in-situ operations face much more severe mining problems than surface efforts. Because the mined stope (called an in-situ "retort" by processors) acts as a retorting process vessel subject to gas flow, combustion, and temperatures between 1,500° and 2,000°F, mining is under highly restrictive limitations. This processing method involves removing between 20 and 40% of the shale deposit and then blasting the roof and walls into the mined space, where the oil is recovered by retorting. Major problems are: (1) swell factor severely limited; (2) need for consistent size distribution of blasted shale; (3) even filling of stope (in-situ retort) by blasted shale with consistent permeability throughout; (4) scaleup of blasting techniques, after optimization; (5) protection of retort pillars and roof during and after retorting; (6) prevention of groundwater percolation; (7)use of ANFO explosive in wet holes; (8) disposing of surface-retorted shale waste in stope; and (9) restoration of site. If the particles produced and transported in your plant are as chunky as rough crushed coal or as fine as cement, there are probably several conveying and elevating systems suitable for your operation. The problem is deciding which is most suitable in terms of space, energy cost, allowable product degradation, productivity, and angle of movement. Each conveying and elevating method should be fit to the products it can handle successfully, to desirable economics, and to suitability for the overall operating scheme. Matching along these lines will result in selection guides that should be useful for many years, although design evolution is expected for the materials handling equipment involved. There are several common bulk material handling devices for moving solids: belt conveyors, screw conveyors, bucket elevators, chain conveyors, and en-masse conveyors/ elevators. En-masse conveyor/elevator equipment is commonly compared and contrasted with the other devices. These comparisons often involve en-masse versus all others. En-masse has developed into a versatile technique because the machines can move materials horizontally, vertically, or in closed circuit. Such machines unload, elevate, store, reclaim, and distribute materials-all without ancillary equipment except for chutes and gates. Bulk material can be carried, as with a belt conveyor or bucket elevator; pushed, as with a flight or screw conveyor; bumped, as with a vibrating conveyor; blown, as with a pneumatic conveyor; fluidized, as with a dense phase pneumatic conveyor; or by applying internal forces to it to induce "en-masse" flow. Conveying en-masse is analogous to the flow of a fluid in an open channel, and elevating en-masse is analogous to the flow of fluid in a pipe. In the case of a fluid, flow is caused by a differential in pressure. With en-masse movement, flow results from resistance to shear induced by the movement of chain and flights.

Underground mining method selection (UMMS) is one of the most important issues in mining engineering. Underground mining method should be primarily selected to make use of underground resources optimally. It is nearly impossible to change the mining method once selected by the reasons of rising costs and mining losses. Because of these reasons, UMMS process is extremely important in mine designs and economics. The strategy of underground mining method selection has been studied by different researchers in the literature. Boshkov and Wright (1973) proposed a classification system; Morrison (1976) suggested a selection chart; Laubscher (1981) proposed a selection methodology; Nicholas (1981) presented a classification system; Hartman (1987) developed a selection chart and Miller-Tait et al. (1995) modified the Nicholas? system and developed the UBC mining method selection process. In reality, UMMS is one of the important Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problems and mining engineers have always some difficulties in making the right decision in the multiple criteria environment. To make a right decision on UMMS, all known criteria related to the mining method selection should be analyzed and the problem solved according to suitable decision making techniques. A review of the literature reveals that decision making techniques have been used for UMMS applications. Kesimal and Bascetin (2002), Bitarafan and Ataei (2004), Bascetin et al. (2006), Alpay and Yavuz (2007), Karadogan et al. (2008) and Samimi Namin et al. (2008) used decision making techniques in UMMS applications. In this paper, two different MADM methods: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Multiple Attribute Decision Making (FMADM) are applied to select the optimal underground mining method for a chromite mine and final solutions are then compared. THE AHP METHODOLOGY The AHP method developed by Saaty gives an opportunity to represent the interaction of multiple factors in complex unstructured situations (Triantaphyllou, 2000). The method is based on the pair-wise comparison of components with respect to attributes and alternatives. A pair-wise comparison matrix n×n is constructed, where n is the number of elements to be compared. The method is applied for the hierarchy problem structuring. The problem is divided in to three levels: problem statement, object identification to solve the problem and selection of evaluation criteria for each object. After the hierarchy structuring, the pair-wise comparison matrix is constructed for each level where a nominal discrete scale from 1 to 9 is used for the evaluation as shown in Table 1 (Saaty, 1980; Saaty, 2000). The next step is to find the relative priorities of criteria or alternatives implied by this comparison. The relative priorities are worked out using the theory of eigenvector. For example, if the pair comparison matrix is A, then, [Amax=××- [1] ] To calculate the eigenvalue ??max? and eigenvector w=(w1, w2,..., wn), weights can be estimated as relative priorities of criteria or alternatives. [ ] Since the comparison is based on the subjective evaluation, a consistency ratio is required to ensure the selection accuracy. The Consistency Index (CI) of the comparison matrix is computed as follows: [CImax--= [2] ] where ?max is maximal or principal eigenvalue, and n is the matrix size. Coal preparation plants play an important role in modern society by providing high quality feeds for coal-fired utilities, industrial boilers and metallurgical coke facilities. Unfortunately, field data indicate that preparation plants are often not operated under optimum conditions, resulting in lower productivity and lost profits. In many cases, this shortcoming can be attributed to a failure by plant operators (i) to recognize the importance of correctly adjusting plant operating conditions to accommodate requirements dictated by coal sales agreements within different coal markets and (ii) to properly account for variations in product moisture with particle size across different plant circuits. This paper discusses the important influence of moisture constraints on preparation plant optimization and provides a case study to illustrate the potential gains that can be realized via proper understanding of plant moisture control.

This paper provides an overview of the current use of backfill for ground support in underground metal mines in the United States and a summary of recent accident data reported for these mines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Backfill mines comprise a major part of the underground metal mining industry and are particularly important in terms of the fatalities and injuries impacting this workforce. Ground falls are the leading cause of fatal accidents at these mines accounting for 50 percent of the total fatalities (4 out of the 8 fatalities that occurred from 2006 through second quarter of 2011). MSHA reported several different types of accidents involving backfill at these mines. While backfill ground falls do not occur frequently, these accidents result in a much higher proportion of fatalities than host rock ground falls. Backfill ground fall accidents are especially hazardous in underhand cut-and-fill mining operations where employees work directly beneath the backfill. An analysis of recent MSHA accident data supports the need for further cooperative research with the mining industry to identify and address ground control problems in underground metal mines using backfill.

San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) operates an underground coal mine near Farmington, New Mexico. Continuous miners and a longwall produce 7-8 million tons per year. The coal seam at SJCC has tested to have a propensity for spontaneous combustion. As such, during feasibility for this project, it was elected to utilize a bleederless ventilation system on the longwall. Three-entry gateroads are developed, and the longwall gob is sealed as mining progresses. SJCC utilizes a nitrogen injection system to continuously inertize the gob. In 2004, the mine was nearing completion of its first longwall district. The next district would contain longer panels (up to 12,500 feet). Due to the liberation of methane, and to a lesser extent hydrogen sulfide, a typical wrap-around ventilation system would not be appropriate. Not only would gas concentrations likely be challenging, but the overall ventilating pressure in the mine would have to be increased beyond limits established to mitigate the potential for spontaneous combustion. Given the above-described operating constraints, SJCC determined a need for a small ventilation shaft in the back (longwall setup area) of the next district that would draw adequate air past the longwall seals to maintain low gas levels and permit the required regulatory inspections to occur. Extensive ventilation modeling and gas desorption testing indicated that the shaft would be required to handle a volume of air ranging from 40,000 cfm to as high as 185,000 cfm. This large range is driven by the position of the longwall face with respect to the shaft and the effectiveness of the SJCC degasification program (SJCC uses vertical gob vent boreholes and horizontal in-seam methods). Ventilation simulations determined an appropriate diameter for the 350-ft-deep shaft to be 5 feet. Having determined shaft size, the next decision related to the method of shaft construction. Conventional shaft sinking was ruled out, due to the small diameter. Raise boring was an attractive option but had two drawbacks: (1) development crews would reach the bottom of the shaft just a few weeks before longwall startup, leaving a compressed timeframe to install the shaft, and (2) raiseboring requires additional underground entries to be developed to stow the project’s cuttings. While raiseboring remained a viable option, the problems associated with it led SJCC to also investigate blind drilling.

Fully mechanized longwall mining with large mining heights (LMHs) in shallow-depth thick coal seams has been widely applied in Shenfu coalfield, China. Dynamic loading and rib spalling is serious when the LMH working face experiences periodic weighting in shallow coal seams. The advanced breaking position (fracturing ahead of the face) in the roof affects the strength of the mine pressure (weighting) when the roof is broken. Based on the theory of the “elastic foundation beam,” this paper presents a mechanical model for the advanced breaking of the roof, including a predictive formula. In an attempt to verify the formula, a field program consisting of multiple-point borehole extensometers installed in the roof in advance of the longwall face was performed in the No. 22201 working face of Zhangjiamao coal mine in the Shenfu mining area, China. The field measurement results show that the roof movement of the LMH working face is detected prior to roof pressure increase, and that the roof breaks approximately 5–8 m ahead of the face. This compares with a calculated value of 6.9 m, indicating that the formula developed in this research is reliable and should have application in predicting roof pressure associated with LMH working faces in shallow coal seams.

Throughout the years, research studies have reached a consensus in acknowledging the relevancy of surface chemistry phenomena on minerals separation and metals extraction. Many techniques, and notably, scanning electron microscope-based technologies have revolutionised the entire mineral processing industry. Nevertheless, the comprehensive understanding on how surface chemistry properties influence the performance of many processes involving ores is still a challenge, a matter of controversy. The latter is mainly due to the fact that all interfacial processes do not necessarily require stoichiometric and well defined atomic structures. This is particularly true in the case of sulphide minerals which are well known to be superficially unstable in aerated media. When trying to measure any variable related to mineral-mineral or mineral-aqueous solution interfaces, there are too many unknowns regarding how sensitive the interface is when facing sampling protocols and sample handling. The aim of this research work is to make a case for improving future concentrators? survey protocols. It suggests a methodology to study effectively chemical changes at the outmost mineral surface layer at different stages of a mineral processing operation. The sampling protocol and sample handling is presented in details and it is applied to the regrinding stage of an industrial plant.

The low potential hydrophobic state of pyrite in amyl xanthate flotation with nitrogen is of particular interest with regard to the N2TEC flotation technology currently being used for the recovery of auriferous pyrite at Newmont’s Lone Tree Plant in Nevada. The N2TEC system had been found to operate satisfactorily, but cyanide in the flotation mill water appeared to be responsible for a loss in pyrite recovery. This supposition was confirmed with laboratory experiments and a program was initiated to study flotation chemistry variables by electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements. Experimental results show that activation of pyrite in such cyanide solutions can be achieved more effectively with lead than with copper. Subsequently, based on these fundamental studies, significant improvement at the Lone Tree Plant was achieved by lead activation, in which case the recovery increased to expected levels. The effect of activator is particularly significant not only with respect to pyrite depression by residual cyanide, but also with respect to collector (PAX) consumption and the initial state of the pyrite surface. Each of these issues is being studied in detail and research progress is discussed herein.

An accurate estimation of mining block grades continues to be a challenging task for ore reserve practitioners. Two of the factors that affect the accuracy of the estimates are the estimation method used and the variability of the mineralization in the deposit. The objectives of the study are twofold: Firstly, to see how different estimation methods perform on a given deposit. Secondly, to determine the impact of particular nature of the mineralization on the results. The comparison of several estimation methods for the prediction accuracy is performed using the conditional simulation results as the basis.

In 1911, a young mining engineer named Bartlett Thane assembled a large claim block, 4 miles southeast of Juneau, Alaska. Across the Gastineau Channel on Douglas Island, the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company had, by 1904, produced gold valued at more than three times the purchase price of Alaska in 1867 (Kelly, 2010). Thane knew his deposit was lower grade than other mines or prospects in the area; however, if the deposit was developed on a large-scale, the trend and size of the deposit made the project potentially economic. In 1911, Thane developed a business plan for the project and successfully attracted investor interest. In 1912, Daniel C Jackling visited the property at the request of an east coast investment group. Upon inspection of 5 years of production records for the Perseverance Mine, Jackling saw an opportunity to apply the low-grade/high volume milling technology which was widely adopted to the copper porphyry deposits of the southwestern U.S. With a design capacity of 6,000 tons per day (5,454 tonnes/day), Jackling’s innovative mill design would require high volume underground mining methods and the power of two new hydroelectric projects. By 1915, the Alaska Gastineau Mining Company was in full production. Between 1915 and 1919, the mine and mill set production records for haulage and throughput. The hydroelectric projects proved to be successful engineering marvels. Operational difficulties related to ore grade, refractory elements and labor shortages interrupted production on an increasing basis. In 1921, the mining company permanently shut down operations. The first large-scale and sustained underground mine, operated by the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company in the late 1880’s, established the Juneau-Douglas area as the regional hub for transportation and development. In the mid-1890’s, the combined population of Juneau and Douglas reached approximately 3,000 residents, largely driven by employment and support demands of several small to mid-size underground gold mines in the region. By 1904, the value of the cumulative gold production of the Alaska Treadwell was five times greater than the purchase price of Alaska in 1867 (Kelly, 2010). By the turn of the 20th century, economic growth in the Juneau-Douglas area relied on supplies delivered from the lower 48. Passenger and freight shipping lines required 3 to 4 days to make the one-way trip from Seattle to Juneau. Established shipping routes required experienced crews due to navigation hazards and adverse weather conditions. Even with precautions at the time, steam ships and freighter vessels experienced breakdowns or encounters with natural hazards that resulted in damage or in some cases, sinking. Interestingly, with no roads or railroads connecting Juneau to other communities in southeast Alaska, Juneau still relies on seaborn shipping in the 21st century.
