Crushing and grinding activity in 1989 followed the rapid pace of the mineral industry. Use of existing installations, demand for expanded capacity, and implementation of entirely new operations contributed to a high level of activity. At the 1989 SME-AIME Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, NV, the crushing and grinding session focused on wear materials in crushers and mills. Another session joined the process control group in its simulation-modeling and control of crushing and grinding circuits. Both sessions addressed the optimization in operating effectiveness. Specific subjects covered grinding media wear of forged and cast grinding balls and rubber lined mill liner wear. Also, the Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) Mill Conference in Vancouver in September 1989 provided a valuable update on the progress of SAG operations in recent years. Operationally, gold grinding and roasting circuits were implemented in 1989. Freeport McMoRan Gold started up two operations in Nevada. Two other circuits, both using SAG mills, are scheduled to start in 1990. These will be in Nevada and British Columbia. Elsewhere in gold, additional capacity continues to be brought onstream, both domestically and worldwide. In copper, expansions continue to call on additional crushing and grinding units. The unrest at Bougainville in Papua New Guinea has fueled a continued, strong demand for comminution in the copper sector. Specific equipment installed or started in 1989 included the ac variable frequency drive SAG mills in Australia, Alaska, and Papua New Guinea. Also, the gearless drive SAG mill in Chile provides tremendous flexibility in terms of mill speed. The trend toward moveable in-pit crushers continues -even at established operations.

In recent years, a variety of new or substantially modified grinding machines have been offered to the mining industry with claims of improved performance relative to standard grinding machines especially rod and ball mills. The incentive for developing such new machines is high, because costs associated with grinding are a very substantial part of the total costs of processing run-of-mine ore, and gold ores are no exception in this regard. The incentive is also high because of the very low conversion of input energy to comminution energy in most tumbling mills. If the most energy-efficient means of mechanical size reduction is slow compression of single particles, then this energy amounts to only about 3% of that used in tumbling mills. It would seem, therefore, that there is a huge potential to do better. This paper examines three types of grinding machine for which claims of higher energy utilisation ( amongst other beneficial claims) have been made, namely the high pressure grinding rolls, the vibrating drum mill and various styles of stirred mill. It presents evidence concerning the claims, examines the range of particle size and particle size reduction over which benefits might reasonably be expected to accrue, discusses the major issues in contention and briefly describes the research the CSIRO Division of Minerals has in progress, both independently and collaboratively, the latter mainly with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) via the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) and the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA). Gold was first discovered in the central region of French Guiana in the mid 1860's. Production was based strictly from placer mining of the various rivers in the region. At the moment, a number of companies are actively engaged in hard rock gold exploration, concentrated in the northern and central regions of the country. The Franc-Or/BRGM joint venture in the Sophie-Repentir region of Central French Guiana offers an exceptional opportu­nity for the discovery of one or more million-plus ounce deposits of gold owing to a highly favorable structural setting in Precam­brian greenstones that host several known vein gold occurrences, some of which appear to occur near the border of a potassic granitoid intrusion. At this point in time, based mostly on predecessors' work, mineable reserves could be estimated to be in the 500,000 ounces range over the length of the property. The exploration campaign under way has the objective to delineate probable reserves of at least 2 million ounces that could be mined by open pit mining methods in the area. The program should be completed in the next 18-24 months. In order to efficiently and effectively evaluate this very large property area, all of the necessary camp, mechanical and drilling equipment has been purchased and is being transported to the property. Most of that equipment was purchased in Canada. The first drill target is the Repentir sector because of its access and the amount of detailed work that has been done by BRGM on that concession, but geological evidence suggests that many areas on the property could offer even more potential.

Labor costs, which have rapidly increased in the industrial countries for several years, have forced the mining industry to develop new methods and cost saving systems. Also, because mining is basic to meeting the increasing requirements for raw materials, the mining industry is guaranteed a key position in cost cutting efforts. Although this report aims to describe major recent developments in the Federal Republic of Germany, it is restricted to a limited number of them in view of the wide variety of current innovations. The most important mining activities in West Germany are concentrated in the coal mines on the Rhine, Ruhr and Saar, in the lignite open-cast mines west of Cologne and in the potash and salt mining region in Lower Saxony and Hesse. This report will only discuss developments in the underground coal mines and the potash and salt mines, and focuses on projects of Salzgitter Maschinen and Anlagen AG (SMAG). HYDRAULIC DRILLS Drilling strata of varying strength One special difficulty faced in European coal mines is the varying of compressive strength of strata that occurs even over a few meters. The strata associated with the coal measures ranges from hard and tough sandstone or conglomerate to very soft carboniferous shale. It is often difficult to use continuous miners or roadheaders so that drifting by blasting still predominates. But the varying compressive strengths of the strata makes it difficult to choose the best method to drill the rock. For example, it is best to penetrate hard sandstone or conglomerate with heavy percussion drills. The soft carboniferous shale on the other hand, should be penetrated by high speed rotary drilling to obtain optimum performance.

The objective of this investigation was to determine the sensitivity of three selected input parameters in the operational control of continuous bottom-fed thickeners used for the treatment of coal refuse slurries. The three variable parameters were "Feed Flow Rate," "Feed pH," and "Feed Solids Concentration." These three input parameters were studied under three polymeric conditions which were cationic polymer, anionic polymer, and a combination of cationic-anionic polymer. For each polymeric condition, two mathematical models were developed: one for overflow response, the other for underflow response. The combination polymers produced the best desired quality of overflow and underflow. For this polymeric condition, changes in the feed solids concentration was the most sensitive factor in the maintenance of the overflow quality, and the feed pH was the most sensitive factor for the maintenance of the underflow quality. The mathematical models generated a set of plots which would allow an operator to control and/or adjust any of the three variables to achieve optimum conditions.

Many rock sass classification systems exist' to assist the engineer in assessing the rock support requirements for underground design. Our ongoing research in this area is directed at attempting to utilize the fractal dimension and the acoustic emission' response of the tuffs at Yucca Mountain, Nevada to further aid in rock mass classification. The Topopah Spring' member, the proposed nuclear waste horizon, is characterized by welded and partly welded tuffs, exhibiting a wide range in moduli, strength, porosity and degree of fracturing. Differentiating between the different' types of porosity can be extremely difficult if not impossible. An attempt was made to correlate the acoustic emission response with the porosity of the sample. Events and the peak amplitude may offer a means-to distinguish between, fracture porosity and pore porosity. In addition-, fractal dimension were calculated for several fractures in densely welded tuffs. Two techniques for calculating fractal dimension were-applied' to describe-fracture geometry and roughness. Fractures in-welded-tuff were-found to be relatively smooth.

With the theme ?Mission Possible,? attendees from around the world will hear the latest in tunneling and underground construction technology in the two-and-a-half days of technical sessions. The meeting is scheduled for June 24-27 at the JW Marriott Los Angeles Live in Los Angeles, CA. And the conference will offer short courses and plenty of social activities that will provide attendees the opportunity to catch up with each other. The new tunnel at Genting Sempah is part of a privately funded infrastructure projectthat involves duplicating the existing highway extending from the Gombok Toll Plaza near Kuala Lumpur to Karak, in Malaysia. The 60 km long tollway includes an 800 m long, two-lane highway tunnel with excavated dimensions of 10.5 m wide by 8 m high. The majority of the tunnel extends through slightly to moderately weathered, moderately to highly jointed quartz porphyry. Excavation of the tunnel was performed using drill and blast methods and the primary tunnel support consists of rock dowels and shotcrete except for short sections adjacent to the portals where steel sets were utilized. A portion of the tunnel encountered sheared and altered material that was successfully supported using rock dowels and shotcrete. The final lining for the tunnel consists of mesh and fiber reinforced shotcrete. The flexible nature of the primary support and shotcrete final lining resulted in considerable cost savings and expedient construction methods.

A plant trial was conducted at the Paddy's Flat plant of Dominion Mining Limited with the aim of comparing the ef evenness of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide as leaching oxidants. The Paddy's Flat plant is designed such that the leach train can be divided into two parallel streams, allowing the same or lurry to be eated in two identical trains. By effectively ehminatmg the influence of the ore variations on the results subtle differences in the performance of the two reagents hav been identified. . . The results of the plant trial indicate that the two reagents act m different ways, and that each may be more suitable than the other _for _the treatment of certain types of ore. In some cases a co bmation of the two reagents may be the most cost effective option. . or t e same chemical conditions in the leach pulp, including dissolved oxygen levels , the reagents achieve different gold leaching rates, and in some cases different ultimate leach extraction.

Good morning ladies and gentleman. During 1995 Prof. R. P. King (University of Utah Comminution Center) presented 2 papers on new horizons in comminution: "Comminution Research in the United States " was presented at the 1995 Meeting of the National Mining Association, while "Comminution: Meeting the Needs of Fundamental Research in the Mineral Industry" was presented at the 2nd SME Research Forum - 1995. In both papers a very interesting graph named "Energy usage for various comminution schemes" illustrated some poignant issues proposed by Prof. King. We do think that some of Prof. King's ideas might very well serve as "warm-ups" for this Comminution Panel Discussion, which are ultimately the goals to be reached by the 3-minute presentations. Thus, we shall be addressing in the sequence Prof. King's most relevant ideas (as well as introducing his graph), intending therefore show how important creative and state-of-the-art Mill Modeling is, if it is to become a Tool to Effective Cost-Saving Optimization Strategies.

This paper presents the results of laboratory experiments for the detection of electric signals from Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) sheet samples which have undergone a temporally increasing loading of bending type up to fracture. Electric signals that were recorded while the sample was subjected to bending are referred from now on as Bending Stimulated Currents (BSC), in order to differentiate them from the relevant signals emitted by materials that suffer uniaxial compressional stress. The latter signals are referenced as Pressure Stimulated Currents (PSC). BSC emitted from FRP sheet samples presented here, were recorded after applying three successive load steps to samples. The increase rate of applied stress was about 0.15kN/s. Initially starting from low load values to higher load values until the FRP sheet reaches at a state just before its failure. The BSC records from FRP samples are compared to equivalent recordings from cement mortar beam and distinguishable differences are discussed.

This project, which is intended to provide effective sewerage services to the Blue Mountains community, is located in the Blue Mountains National Park, about 60 km west of Sydney, Australia. The sewerage scheme consists of about 40 km of tunnels, out of which approximately 22 km have been completed. This paper describes the last major tunnelling operation on this project, the Hazelbrook to Katoomba tunnels. These tunnels, which mainly traverse the Hawkesbury Sandstone formation, are being excavated by a new 3.4 meter diameter Jarva Mk12C TBM. The mucking system consists of a continuous conveyor, which has allowed for some very impressive advance rates. The paper will consist of three main sections; the general geological conditions expected along the tunnel will be described in the first section. The second section will discuss the design and main features of the TBM, back-up system and continuous conveyor. The third section of the paper will describe the operational aspects and various performance data of the machine.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc.’s Betze open pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, NV. Ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County (Fig. 1). The final pit will be about 2440 m long x 1550 m wide (8000 x 5100 ft), elongate in a west-northwesterly direction and about 425 m (1400 ft) deep. The pit straddles the Barrick-Newmont Gold Co. property boundary. History The first hole at the Goldstrike Mine was drilled in 1962. Between 1963 and 1964, 17 shallow holes were drilled with little encouragement, in view of the price of gold at $1.12/g ($35/oz). From 1962 to 1975, several different companies explored the Goldstrike property. In 1975, Pancana Industries acquired the property. In 1976, Pancana’s exploration efforts found sufficient gold mineralization to initiate heap leach production. In 1977, Pancana formed a joint

Zortman Mining has spent approximately three years evaluating the metallurgy of the sulfide ores from the mining area of the possible expansion project. As the test program proceeded, an interesting series of events took place which changed the scope of the work. During the agglomeration work, one of the control columns was inadvertently set up without the addition of lime to the material prior to loading and subsequent leaching. The gold recovery from this column was comparable to those columns that had a lime addition of 10 pounds per ton of ore. In fact, the gold recovery curve had a much steeper slope than those of the other columns. Furthermore, the pH of the pregnant liquor from the "no lime" column recovered to typical levels as fast as the solutions from the "lime" columns. These observations led to the concept that rinsing the ore with water prior to cyanide leaching could be advantageous to the heap-leach process.

Any viable model or deterministic formula used to make predictions must follow certain criteria. The standard models and procedures used to project acid load from mining activities operate from a number of assumptions, some of which, although logical, are scientifically oversimplified and, hence, invalid. Highly variable field parameters have lead to highly variable acid projections. Kinetic tests are in themselves misnomers in that no parameters associated with chemical reaction kinetics are ever determined. Sampling error coupled with assumptions made as to the distribution mode of pyritic materials in rock units can lead to highly inaccurate conclusions explaining why acid generation often occurs where none is predicted. The fact that probability theory and paradigms governing luck and chance have not been incorporated into the science of acid prediction undermines any credence placed on such projections. To date, with few exceptions, the acid prediction is logically closer to a game of chance than practical science.

Robins Engineers & Constructors, Inc. as the exclusive U.S. licensee introduced the PIPE CONVEYOR to the North American marketplace early in 1984. The sale of the first PIPE CONVEYOR in 1985 was a difficult task since the conventional troughed belt conveyor was the accepted and the most widely used means of continuous transportation of bulk materials handling in the world. Initially our clients viewed the PIPE CONVEYOR as a departure from the normal and accepted form of material handling. Since then, the parent company of Robins Engineers merged with Krupp of Germany to form KRUPP ROBINS, INC. in the United States. To date there are over 462 PIPE CONVEYORS operating worldwide with the majority of the long overland systems designed and installed by Krupp Robins, Inc. The PIPE CONVEYOR is now becoming the norm, viewed by those who are familiar with its capabilities as the preferred method of transportation for all bulk solids.

The evolution of engineering education and research has been profoundly influenced by computer technology and has concomitantly followed changes in this technology. Today, virtually all faculty have access to at least two hierarchies of computers: desk personal computers and at least one echelon higher (workstations or a variety of mid-sized computers). Most faculty have access to three or even four hierarchies: the two listed, plus super-mini and super computers. The ready availability of computers at a low cost has increased dedicated and site-specific computer technology. This has permitted universities to move into the field of macro-engineering, to address increasingly complex problems in resource recovery, manufacturing and many other areas, including important societal problems, like the environment. The creation of university research centers indicates the growing importance of macro-engineering involving large systems of interactive components. Funding agencies have increasingly favored such centers since they cross disciplines, generate inter-university consortia and foster university-industry programs.

The search for noncyanide lixiviants for treating gold and silver ores and concentrates is not a new endeavor. However, in recent years, the overall activity to seek a less environmentally controversial reagent than cyanide has occasioned considerable developmental work. While the elegant economy and simplicity of cyanide, because of its selectivity and the ease of recovering gold and silver from the cyanide complexes, is well recognized, two failings have justified the search for alternates: increasing concerns and costs to assure avoidance of environmental damage from cyaniferous liquids and solids, and the need to simplify recovery of gold and silver from refractory ores. Generally, process development work to date on the alternate reagents has lacl<::ed environmental focus ( Hiskey and Devries, 1992). This paper covers briefly the chemistry of various alternates to cyanide and reviews their environmental implications. In each case, environmental overtones are reviewed following the chemistry. The topic I would like to throw out for discussion this morning concerns the metallurgical solution management of operating a valley fill leach facility where ore depths approach 250 feet and deeper. We are currently beginning to experience solution transport times through our heaps on the order of 60 to 70 days as our heaps approach 250 feet. Incorporating a two-stage leach scenario, or solution enrichment, these times are nearly doubled. Concurrent with the increased solution transport times, the solution tenors being produced by our heaps are being diluted slightly as percolation occurs through the lower lifts. I feel the best way to handle these situations is to closely monitor solution application rates, and carefully manage ore stacking. Also, as heaps become deeper, metallurgical and hydrologic characteristics of the ore become inter-related, i.e. if channeling or preferential flow is taking place, lowering cross-sectional flow rates to older leach panels with help re­institute capillary flow while helping to prevent solution tenor dilution.
