Short Historical Review Tunnelling in Germany is as old as it is in other industrial countries. Until the middle of this century German contractors had no chance to work continuously in this business except if they were operating internationally. Since 1960, however, tunnelling has been a growing market domestically. The reasons for this growth have been both in the growing demand of traffic routes and also in an increasing environmental consciousness, which tries to transfer any cause of disturbance underground. Tunnelling engineers of course don't complain about this trend. As almost every German city is built upon water-bearing soft ground, shields have been used soon after they were first successfully utilized in Great Britain and the United States. Until the seventies lining systems for shield tunnels were predominantly either cast iron segments or concrete segments for primary support combined with different sealing systems and a secondary concrete lining cast-in-place. Steel ribs and timber lagging for primary support has not been utilized in Germany, since the owners don't accept timber to be left in the ground. In 1973, for the first time, permanent linings were constructed with watertight segment rings of precast concrete (Fig. 1). This lining was developed as an economical solution for use with slurry shields in noncohesive, water-bearing soils that required an immediately watertight lining. In this study, with the primary goal of capturing ongoing digital transformation and automation impacts on the mining industry and its workforce, we conduct several interviews with mining industry experts in the United States and analyze our survey reports qualitatively and quantitatively through exploratory analysis. After the interpretation of the insights of industry experts, we proceed to generate a personalized and customized data analysis through a novel metric based on skills, knowledge, competencies and occupational requirements, which quantifies the job similarities for occupations in the mining industry based on the publicly available database of the U.S. Department of Labor. We use text analytics to tokenize and classify the interviews to capture a better understanding of major response categories. The temporal analysis shows that the critical competency needs in the data science and autonomy category increases from 28 percent in current demands to 43 percent. In defining our metric, we also calculate Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence for each job profile that enables determining whether and to what extent that job is transitionary in our test set based on the mean, standard deviation and kurtosis of each job of interest. Our analysis reveals that the in-group job transitions are significantly easier than the between-group transitions, proving our initial assumptions and common sense. The generated heat maps provide the opportunity to present the gap between the current job and desired job profiles that provide feasible career change options, among others, offering individualized career paths for job seekers and promoting potential job transitions. Through the collection of industry-specific individual employee data, the AI system is envisaged to continue to learn as end users engage with the system, thus creating a central data hub specifically for the future workforce in the mining industry. Although the study has limitations on generalizability for qualitative assessments, it presents itself as a valuable application of how qualitative and quantitative approaches could be of value for future worker training in the mining sector.

For two consecutive years the author and his wife have been fortunate enough to have been invited by the Peoples Republic of China to work with Chinese geologists of the Geological Bureau of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industries (MMI). Our visits, each of which lasted 7-8 weeks, took us to northwestern Sichuan, central Anhui, and much of Hebei Province, as shown in the accompanying drawing. We were asked to evaluate, criticize, and offer suggestions on the exploration and mining techniques used by the Chinese. Our commission both years was centered on gold, although we were also to visit other operations when the opportunity arose. In 1986, the visit primarily concerned with disseminated "Carlin" type gold deposits; in 1987, with "Greenstone" type gold deposits. Gold has been targeted by the Chinese as a metal of importance to the nation. Several governmental agencies have received direction and budgets to seek and develop gold properties. Besides the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, gold is being sought by the Ministry of Geology, the China Gold Corporation, and reportedly the Peoples Army. There is considerable competition among these agencies. It is not uncommon to find two or more agencies working in the same general area. However, communication between the groups is minimal. Last year, we toured a small mine at Bambishan. We could see a diamond drill across the valley. The rig belonged to another Ministry and my guides voiced their curiosity to know what their competitors were finding. Mining, too, is not the monolithic bureaucracy that most Westerners anticipate in China. There are various levels of mining. These differ not only in sophistication, but in ownership. First, for small deposits the state allows "Peoples Mines". These can be owned and worked by individuals. My recent experience has been with wet tropical environments, which address a different set of concerns than Nevada, for example. Spraying rather than drips are required in most cases just to assist the water balance requirement, and my comments address those situations. Most tropical operations are faced with both extremely wet and very dry seasons, with some having multiple cycles during the year. A heap leach operation must address the rate of solution building up within the ponds and how long the volume must last until the next rainy season. It may be easier to construct sufficient pond volume to permit yearlong operation than by discharging excess solution now, and searching for water later. Pond capacity requirements can help with the following: Consider using the solution that could be locked up in the pads during leaching to assist water balance problems. Spray excess solution continuously onto spent ore that would not be normally be sprayed again to "soak up" the excess solution, and stop spraying when the water balance is low, allowing the solution in the spent ore to return back into the system-with or without cyanide added. In a multiple lift system, if intermediate HDPE liners are planned for solution grade control, have drips placed before the HPDE liner is in place. The drips can distribute excess precipitation throughout the lower lifts to control the water balance, while the most current lifts are being leached and sent directly for the preg pond. With only 2 million tonnes (2.2 million tons) of spent ore involved, up to 200,000 cubic meters (53 million gallons) of solution could be moved into or out of the water balance system, if proper methods are designed and installed. That is equivalent to one meter (40 inches) precipitation falling on a 200,000 square meter (2.2 million square feet) pad area. You may even get a little bit more gold recovered as the solution drains from the earlier pads, as well.

In this paper we are going to look at some things that may happen to the industrial minerals industry in the next decade. First, some concepts and definitions. What are industrial minerals? Not everyone agrees on an answer to this. So let's look at some of the opinions. Some say that industrial minerals are non-metallic minerals. As you well know, metallic minerals are used as a source material for metals. Copper, lead, and zinc are extracted from metallic minerals. But, some metallic minerals are also used for other reasons. Bauxite is used as a source of alumina and aluminum. It is also used as proppant in well drilling, as an abrasive, as a refractory material, and as a source of aluminum-based chemicals. So bauxite is both metallic and nonmetallic. There are other examples, too. Bastnasite is a source of rare earth metals and alloys but its concentrate is used in fluid cracking catalysts. Phosphate rock is an industrial mineral when used for fertilizer, but it is also the source of phosphorus. Ilmenite and rutile are sources for titanium dioxide pigments as well as titanium. So the nonmetallic designation is not adequate to define industrial minerals. Some say industrial minerals are called such because they are consumed in industry. How about your cat's litter box? Is that industry? Huge amounts of montmorillonite, attapulgite and other sorbtive minerals are pelletized and calcined to make animal litter. Doctors are trying to get people to cut down on their salt consumption. They are against people eating industrial minerals. When diamonds are a girl's best friend, they are not industrial minerals; when they are grinding and polishing media, they are. These examples show that industrial minerals are not exclusive to industry. Regardless, here is my list of industrial minerals: Abrasive Materials - Bentonite Antimony (Oxide) - Borates Asbestos - Calcium Carbonate Attapulgite - Diatomite Ball Clay - Dolomite Barite - Feldspar Bauxite (and Alumina) - Fire Clay Fluorspar - Pyrophyllite Fuller's Earth - Rare Earths Graphite - Salt Gypsum - Sand and Gravel Kaolin - Silica Sand Kyanite - Soda Ash Limestone - Sodium Sulfate Magnesite - Spodumene (Lithium) Magnetite - Sulfur Mica - Talc Nepheline Syenite - Titanium Dioxide Perlite - Vermiculite Phosphates - Wollastonite Potash - Zeolites Pumice There is some overlapping. Fuller's Earth takes in some attapulgite, bentonite, and other minerals, depending on the market. Some would like to distinguish industrial minerals by the market emphasis they receive compared to fuels, metallics, and precious metals. But even there, strict logic fails. Some industrial minerals are commodities. They are sold on a price basis against industry product specs, usually in large volumes. Phosphate rock, potash, sulfur, salt, soda ash, and other materials fit this category. Some are almost custom-designed for end-use and meet performance specs. These are sometimes called functional or specialty industrial minerals. Examples of these are ground calcium carbonate, water-washed kaolin, cosmetic grade talc, filtration grades of diatomite, perlite, and vermiculite. INTRODUCTION This article describes the yellow cake drying, packaging and dust collection circuit of the United Nuclear Church Rock Mill. It also describes the layout and floor plan of this section as well as the operation and performance of the various equipment. In order to place the yellow cake section in perspective of the mill as a whole, the mill circuit is described briefly. CHURCH ROCK MILL GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Church Rock Mill contains six operating sections shown in Figure 1 in block diagram form. The grinding section consists of a semi-autogenous mill in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone. The slurry is then routed to the leaching tanks. Sulfuric acid and sodium chlorate is added to dissolve the uranium. The pulp is transferred from the leach tanks to the thickeners where the uranium bearing liquid is separated from the barren solids. The uranium bearing solution is then filtered and pumped to the solvent extraction section. [ ] In the solvent extraction section, the uranium bearing aqueous solution is brought into contact with an organic solution composed of kerosene, amine and isodecanol. The amine extracts the uranium from the aqueous solution. This organic solution is then routed to the stripping section, where the uranium is removed from the organic solution with an ammonium sulfate aqueous solution. The pregnant stripping solution now concentrated to 30 gpl U308 is routed to the precipitation tanks where ammonia is added to precipitate the uranium. The yellow cake is then washed in a counter current circuit of two thickeners and one centrifuge to remove impurities, mainly sulfates in order to meet specifications. The centrifuge centrate is routed to the second wash thickener for forward wash. The centrifuge cake at approximately 50% solids consistency is transferred to the yellow cake dryer via a screw conveyor. YELLOW CAKE DRYING, PACKAGING AND DUST COLLECTION Figure 2 shows the flowsheet of the integrated circuit of drying, packaging and dust collection. This section of course centers around the yellow cake dryer as the main equipment. The other main units are the dust collectors for the dryer and packaging respectively, a yellow cake storage bin and the yellow cake packaging facilities. Physically, all of this equipment occupies four floors, beginning at the top floor: 1. Both dust collector fans, the centrifuge and the screw conveyor to transport the yellow cake to the dryer. 2. The dryer, fire box and both dust collectors occupy the third floor. Figure 3 shows the floor plan of the third and fourth floors. 3. The yellow cake storage bin and dryer dust collector sump are located on the second floor. 4. The ground floor houses the loading facilities consisting of two load out ports from the bin to barrels, a roller conveyor loop, drum weighing scale, and change room facilities. Figure 4 shows the ground floor plan. Figure 5 is an elevation view of this section showing the overall equipment arrangement.

Estimating the risk of lung cancers for workers in uranium mines and defining the resulting dose equivalent limits have been made possible thanks to work carried out in two scientific fields : physics and epidemiology. Theoretical calculations on the basis of physical models for the former and epidemiological surveys on the mortality of uranium miners from lung cancer for the latter. However, even though considerable work has been done in these two areas, the results obtained still remain controversial on several points. The radioactive and physical instability of the aerosols present in the atmosphere of the mines and the biological complexity of the human lung which even the most sophisticated physical models can reproduce only very schematically have often proved to be insurmountable difficulties for physicists, explaining the uncertainties which subsist concerning the dose delivered to the various parts of the respiratory tract from the air breathed by miners during their work. Epidemiological investigations on the other hand, in spite of the high quality of the surveys carried out, remain open to criticism, essentially because of the very approximative estimation of the individual occupational exposure to radon daughters. This is due to the fact that uncertainties arise from the measurement of radon gas if the state of equilibrium with the daughters is not accurately known or, if the active deposit is measured, to the fact that these measurements are insufficient in number. The controversies and discrepancies which subsist with regard to the evaluation of the level of risk, and in particular for low doses, can thus be understood. In addition, epidemiological surveys cannot dissociate the carcinogenic action of radon from the synergistic or potentiating actions of tabacco and of other pollutants present in uranium mine air. Animal experiments have been largely taken into account for evaluating the toxicity of various radionuclides. This type of experiment is necessary when human data do not exist and has provided us with much information. For instance, the relative biological effectiveness of the various types of radiation, the metabolism of radionuclides and the mechanisms of cancer induction have been approached and satisfactorily resolved in this way. Concerning radon and its daughters, however, animal experiments have been used very little even though it seems apparent that they should complement epidemiological studies. For instance, whereas doubt can be cast on the data obtained from human epidemiology because of the uncertainty concerning the individual exposure of miners, those drawn from experiments are indisputable because in this case the dose is as perfectly known as the effect. In addition, the effects of radon can experimentally be appreciated separately whereas in the surveys, they cannot be dissociated from the effects of the other pollutants in the mine. Finally, there are no other means of dealing with the mechanisms of cancer induction. In order to gain any useful knowledge from this method however, the experimental model must necessarily present certain methodological guarantees and the effects seen in the animals must enable a comparison with those which appear in man. For this reason we will present here the animal model we have been using for 15 years, and will give the results obtained and compare them with human data and made a synthesis. Finally the conclusions which can be drawn will be discussed as well as their limitations with respect to the protection of uranium miners. I - MATERIAL AND METHODS Male SPF Sprague-Dawley rats were used. At the onset of the inhalations they were around 3 months old. Their small size makes it possible to expose a large number of animals at the same time. Their life-span is long enough to be able to follow the evolution of the cancers and to estimate the latency time. Finally, they present the advantage of having a very low rate of spontaneous lung cancers (SANDERS, 1979). I.1 - Three inhalation techniques were used. 1.1.1. – [Inhalation of radon decay products.] The inhalation apparatus has been described previously (CHAMEAUD et al. 1971). The first experiments utilized a room of a half cubic meter linked to a source made up of high grade uranium ore. Later on, a large installation was built with a 10 m3 inhalation chamber making it possible to expose up to 500 rats at one time at radon concentrations ranging from 100 to 10 000 WL for variable lengths of time (1 to 10 hours per day). These concentrations are higher than those to which the miners are generally exposed, but in order for the cumulated doses in man and in animal to be similar and delivered for the same fraction of their respective life-spans, the ratio of the concentrations should be approximately that of the life-spans. The concentrations of radon and its daughters during the experiments were carefully controlled thanks to multiple samplings of radon gas associated with measurements of radon decay products. The recovery of fine coal has historically had limited success due to the intimate clay association on the surfaces of the coal particles. This clay presence has detrimentally affected conventional beneficiation techniques resulting in a recovered product containing unacceptably high concentrations of ash and moisture. An ultrasonically activated tray that operates in a continuous fashion has been developed that separates the clay film from each particle's surfaces. This separation is of sufficient duration to allow conventional beneficiation techniques to be utilized more efficiently.

P.T. Kellan Equatorial Mining (KEM) is an Indonesian incorporated company owned 90% by CRA Limited of Australia and 10% by PT. Harita Jayaraya of Indonesia. The Kelian gold mine first commenced production in January 1992 and has produced in excess of 21 tonne of gold (675,000 oz) in its first 18 months of operation. The operation is a large tonnage low grade deposit that accepts a low gold recovery by industry standards due to the partially refractory nature of the orebody.

Natural degradation of cyanide has been widely used by the gold mining industry for removal of CN from cyanidation processing wastes. However, little documented study has addressed the decay and fate of cyanide within residue storage ponds. 'fhis paper describes a study on the cyanide behaviour in a residue storage pond at the Boddington Gold Mine in Western Australia. Depth profile samples were collected from the active residue storage to determine the distribution of CN forms and complexing metals throughout the settled residue.

While the oil shale resources of the US are becoming increasingly known, few people in this country are aware of the extensive worldwide occurrence of this resource. Two recent international conferences* confirmed the growing worldwide interest in oil shales, both as future and current energy sources. The 1981 conference noted the difficulty in characterizing worldwide oil shale resources because of lack of common terminology in reporting both assay value and resource potential. Assay value is variously reported as: •US gallons per short ton; •Imperial gallons per metric ton; •Liters per metric ton; •Liters per cubic meter; •Weight percent oil; and •Volume percent oil. Oil shale resources are variously reported in barrels, short tons of oil shale, metric tons of oil shale, and cubic meters of shale oil. Worldwide petroleum shortages sparked interest in alternate energy resources including oil shales. While petroleum supplies appear to have stabilized, at least for a while, high costs are affecting the balance of payment index of many countries, resulting in a continued search for local energy resources. Kerogen is the organic constituent of oil shale and may be the most abundant form of hydrocarbon on earth, possibly exceeding coal occurrences and far more abundant than naturally-occurring petroleum resources. Oil shale, by one name or another, is widespread and is known to exist in more than 38 countries (Table 1). Oil shale industries have existed in at least 14 countries at one time or another. Many predated the Drake oil discovery in Pennsylvania in 1859, and most were unable to compete with natural oil; these operations either converted to its use or closed. At the present time shale oil is being produced on a commercial scale only in the USSR and in China. Only very rough estimates of grade and quantity are available for most of the worldwide shale occurrences since only a few deposits have been thoroughly explored. The Green River Formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming is an exception. For many years this oil shale deposit has been described as the largest single concentration of hydrocarbon material in the world. With increasing world interest, larger deposits may yet be found. In 1965, the US Geological Survey published an in-place world oil shale estimate. This study, while made some 16 years ago, is still a reasonable order-of-magnitude estimate. Although exploration and evaluation are underway and a few oil shale deposits have been appraised, information on which to evaluate most worldwide oil shale occurrences has improved little since 1965. Settling a contract for process design involves a negotiation between the design engineers and the client. Clients wish to offload as much risk as possible by seeking various guarantees about the process performance. Design engineers respond with preconditions and qualifiers, believing that the risk must remain with those who stand to benefit. This paper presents the engineers? point of view on guarantee types and precedents, performance testing, damages that may be claimed, and remedies that can be provided with particular reference to the mining industry.

Knife River Coal Mining Company's Beulah Mine is a multiple seam lignite operation located in western North Dakota. The mine began production in 1963 with annual production at 450,000 metric ton and now produces 2.2 mm ton. As development progresses, operations have advanced into more complex geologic areas. Various techniques have been analyzed to maximize coal recovery in a cost effective manner. Additional studies are on-going to determine what changes will be implemented as we encounter deep wet sands in the reserve area.

Humic acids adsorb on coal and depress coal floatability in the acidic pH range. In alkaline solutions, their effect is not pronounced. In the neutral pH range, a second small addition of kerosene plus MIBC leads to a significant increase in coal yield and better selectivity. Humic acids present on oxidized coal surface were found to be responsible for the inhibited floatability of the? coal. As expected, the flotation of such oxidized coal also strongly depends on the method of pH adjustment.

Senior mining mangers that do not get directly involved in the quality of maintenance performance risk the profitability of their operations. Maintenance is not a stand-alone activity. It requires a production strategy that addresses the total life cycle of equipment from procurement to replacement and assures the fully cooperative, mutually supporting interaction of all mine departments. Only senior managers can assure this happens. This paper examines the strategies, policies and actions required to establish and sustain effective maintenance and the profitability that derives from it.
