The effect of the feed size distribution on the kinetic parameters in pyrite flotation was studied. The kinetic parameters of the particular sizes were determined as a function of whether other particle sizes were present. From the data, a relation between the pyrite flotation rate and the particle size distributions was obtained. It was shown that the flotation rate constant (k) is a function of the size modulus (dt) of the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann distribution, and its variation may be expressed as k = a • exp(b . d,) for either individual size fractions or composite feed. Parameters a and b are dependent on the particle size distribution of the feed. Specifically, parameter a increases linearly as the distribution becomes coarser. The above relationship was also tested under conditions in which the collector (KAX) dosage was varied from 130 to 278 g/t. It was shown that the established relation was not dependent on the collector dosage.

CRA has been actively involved in developing a bacterial oxidation process for the treatment of low grade, refractory gold resources. Success in this application is dependant on the design of large, energy efficient reactors. It was identified at an early stage, that the conventional, bottom sparged bioreactor is inherently inefficient because air must be compressed to a pressure above that at the bottom of the tank. This inefficiency increases as the size of the reactor increases. CRA has developed a novel approach to the aeration problem. In this, venturi aeration is used to aspirate air into a liquor stream. The stream is then reintroduced at the top of a draft tube bioreactor. The advantages found with this technique include · low energy requirements and high oxygen utilisations. From results at the 30 m3 scale, we predict an energy usage of -500 kWh/t sulphur oxidised at a scale of 1000 m3.

Mining has traditionally been seen as a relatively risky business. Exploration is expensive and the failure rate is high, while start-up costs commonly run to many hundreds of million dollars. To justify the risk and expense, the returns from successful projects must also be high. Accurate estimation of mineral resources and reserves is fundamental to the processes of optimising returns and managing risk in mining developments. Systematic development from initial exploration through a series of development stages enables expenditure and risk to be balanced. As a consequence, large scale modern mine are more akin to manufacturing businesses. This paper examines the life history of a mineral reserve estimate from the perspective of a large mining company against a background of modern estimation and reporting requirements. It will also touch on what constitutes, in the author's opinion, `best' practice in reserve estimation, and how this concept can be spread more widely. Heap leaching in certain parts of the world, such as Chile's Atacama Desert, brings unique design problems in the form of possible large differential settlements of the foundation soils due to the dissolution of salts. In northern Chile the soils often c?ntain very high concentrations of soluble salts (nitrates, potas­smm, magnesium, and common sodium). When a leak in the liner occurs, the escaping solution dissolves these salts and trig­gers differential settlement. If the settlement is great enough, the geomembrane tears, the leakage increases, triggering more dif­ferential settlement. The nitrate plants have experienced many occurrences of this phenomenon where a brine pond will under­go a sudden and complete loss of the impounded liquors. The authors present a simplified technique to quantify the differential settlement resulting from dissolution and provide a method which can be used to select a geomembrane with suit­able flexibility under axi-symmetric (multi-axial) load condi­tions to tolerate the predicted settlement.

Mine planning and scheduling done with computer programs is possible only after extensive work has been completed to define the geologic extent of an ore body and an overall mine design. Mine planning methodology on computer can vary from computerized engineering tasks through systems which completely optimize a plan with little input from an engineer during the actual scheduling process. However, a strong emphasis is placed on producing practical mining sequences which may be "best" rather than "optimum". This section offers several viewpoints on the planning process using computers. Interactive planning and scheduling systems are attractive for many companies because they are easy for engineers to understand, and the results are acceptable. The engineer develops an open pit mine sequence by trial and error using interactive graphics. The results of this approach can usually be improved. A computer program can help an engineer make many trials in a short time period and provide a higher level of confidence that a "best" plan has been generated.

Boddington Gold Mine1 (BGM) commenced production in 1987 and is currently ranked as the second largest gold producer in Australia. In a strategy to improve plant efficiency, constraints to plant performance were identified and prioritised with a view to maximising benefit for minimal expenditure. After identifying that leach kinetics and circuit residence time were major constraints, the introduction of oxygen was identified as having the greatest potential for the delivery of sig­nificant cost benefits. The application of oxygen, initially by conventional tech­niques, and subsequently by installation of Atomaer's Filblast gas shear reactor, improved gold recovery, reduced the resi­dence time constraint and enabled higher mill throughput to be achieved. Additional benefits included operation at lower pulp densities and a reduction in reagent usage. A significant reduc­tion in unit operating cost resulted from these benefits. This paper quantifies the above benefits in a format accept­able to both metallurgists and accountants by integrating the findings in a techno-economic perspective.

As mines continue to deepen and become more expansive, active monitoring of larger volumes of rock mass will become more critical to calibrate numerical simulations and to ensure the safety of underground workers. Monitoring larger volumes of rock mass requires low-cost sensors that are simple in construction and installation. In this study, a novel hybrid optical fiber cable (HOFC) designed for use in distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) via grouted boreholes was deployed to monitor a bulk mining operation in an underground metal mine. The HOFC was successfully used to monitor approximately 2.7 × 10 m3 of rock mass above excavations surrounding a pillar removal area in which six large pillars were removed simultaneously. A total of six measurement boreholes (maximum depth of 22 m) were used to measure strain along the optical fiber during the pillar removal operation using the HOFC, allowing for 70 individual strain measurement points, which were constructed for under one U.S. dollar each. Monitoring of the excavation area took place over a 44-day period after pillar removal. Extensional strains were noted in the areas closest to the removed pillars, while areas of compression were noted directly above the remaining pillar in the area. The results of the case study demonstrate that a low-cost optical fiber strain sensing network can be rapidly installed in a large excavation area and can provide highly sensitive strain measurements in a manner that would be cost prohibitive using other methods.

The recent recession has severely impacted the performance and results of virtually all of our natural resource companies. The depressing climate continues to linger and recovery maybe sometime away. Problems remain for resource companies in the steel and petroleum industries as well as the mining business. In February, at the AIME Annual Meeting in New York, an All-Institute session presented a variety of views on the situation. A. T. Yu, chairman of ORBA Corp., Mountain Lakes, NJ, organized presentations by top management personnel of four natural resource companies. This well attended session heard management strategems for the present and views for the future. A compilation and synthesis of these presentations, gathered by Dr. Yu, are presented here for ME readers. Leading off will be William A. Griffith, president and chief executive officer of Hecla Mining Co., Wallace, ID. Other speakers presented here include Wilfred P. Schmoe, executive vice president of Du Pont Co., Wilmington, DE; Frank W. Luerssen, chairman and chief executive officer of Inland Steel Co., Chicago, IL; and Adam H. Zimmerman, president and chief operating officer of Noranda Mines Ltd., Toronto, Ontario. First, then Griffith's remarks. Introduction The key to successfully managing a natural resource company in austere times is good management in good times. In other words, position the company during prosperous times to survive the times when the well dries up. Although we know how to manage properly, for various reasons we sometimes do not do it. We forget the lessons of history. We allow ourselves to be carried away by our egos. We fail to position our companies properly in good times. As a result, in bad times we find ourselves in deep trouble. We need constant reeducation in the things we already know. In the natural resource industries, proper positioning in good times involves becoming a low-cost producer, retaining the flexibility to pull in our horns, developing a lean and effective organization, and maintaining a healthy balance sheet. Nothing improves the chance of survival during austere times as much as being able to produce at a lower cost than your competitors. In our business, that means having low-cost mines - low cost because the ore bodies are high grade or favorably located, and because they are efficiently operated. It also means recognizing the competition. The key numbers are the cost to produce an ounce of silver or gold. Nothing else really counts. And our competition is every other precious metal mine in the world. Flexibility is important when one gets stuck with a high-cost operation, often because things do not work out as we expect. It is important to be able to shut down an operation quickly and easily, without high holding costs, and without disrupting the corporate organization. A lean and mean, effective organization of competent people is vital during bad times. A company will not have that if it is not developed and maintained during good times. Plane failure in rock and soil slopes is usually caused by the intersection of a discontinuity plane with a slope face. Normally, these discontinuities are weaker than the surrounding intact rock and provide a surface along which movement can occur. The discontinuities are typically analyzed to determine the stability of a particular slope. One problem that arises when evaluating the stability of a planar feature is that the method for planar analysis is two-dimensional and has difficulty dealing with planes that are oblique to the slope face. Several researchers have stated in the past that planar failures are a special case of wedge failure. Wedge failures occur when two planar discontinuities intersect in an unfavorable manner. Sliding can occur along the intersection of the planes. Wedge failures are very common in rock slopes and can often be problematic. Wedge stability analysis methods are typically three-dimensional and can analyze planar features that are very oblique to the slope face. Wedge failure analysis can also be used to determine the stability of planar features with good success. One advantage to using wedge analysis over plane analysis is that a tension crack can be both non-vertical and oblique to the slope face in the wedge analysis. This allows the engineer to more closely match field conditions. It also negates the need for the engineer to have two separate software packages to analyze a single slope, saving both time and money.

Compared to alternative ways of dealing with coal fines, oil agglomeration has always been a commercial bridesmaid and never yet a bride. Yet interest is high in the process, as shown by a number of pilot plants in operation that are funded by industry as well as government. In the past in the US, alternative ways to handle coal finer than 100 to 200 mesh included flotation, or no treatment except dewatering, or discarding the fines as waste. There are now a number of factors that tilt the economics more toward fine coal recovery. Today, the cost of mining a ton of underground coal runs from $22-30, and discarding even 10% as unrecovered fine coal is a real economic loss. A number of attempts (notably by EPRI) have been made to quantify the effect of coal cleaning on utility boiler operations. Transportation and ash handling costs, frequency of unscheduled outages, fouling and slagging problems, and boiler tube erosion are all lowered by cleaning coal. The advantage of coal cleaning on these parameters has been shown, but the dollar amount varies with many assumptions and is difficult to pin down. The message to a utility, however, has not been lost and the trend toward cleaner steam coal is accelerating. This may lead to fewer installations that only wash the coarse coal, and add back the unwashed fine coal until a maximum contractual ash limit is reached. And, as the proportion of coal fines continues to increase by continuous and longwall mining, it may become impossible to clean the coal sufficiently without cleaning the fines. Flotation and oil agglomeration are the only processes that presently deal directly with cleaning the very finest coal fractions. Flotation has proven its effectiveness in cleaning blackwater and in separating fine coal from mineral matter. It has the achievable potential for far greater pyrite rejection than is now obtained in commercial preparation plants. In this paper, solid bed erosion processes and the mechanisms involved when a two-phase liquid-solid mixture flows over a bed of solids in a horizontal annulus are analyzed. There are few such studies available with some authors arguing that the flow rate for erosion is always less than the flow rate for the suspension of solid particles thus necessitating further study and analysis of such phenomena. Tests were run to determine the mechanism of erosion and the erosion velocities of the solid bed formed in a concentric annulus for three flu-ids, water, a low concentration water solution of Carboxyl-methyl-cellulose (CMC), which behaved as a Newtonian fluid and a higher concentration CMC water solution which behaved as a power law fluid. Glass spheres of 2 mm nominal diameter were used as solids. The flow rate at which erosion occurred together with the mechanism of bed erosion were determined visually, while the whole process was video recorded. Our tests indicated different erosion mechanisms and different erosion velocities for the three tested liquids, with the liquid viscosity playing a major role. The first mechanism, observed for water flow, gives erosion from the front of the bed while the second mechanism, observed for the flow of the two viscous fluids, gives erosion from the top of the bed. The role of each of the parameters to erosion is investigated, whether it is turbulent flow with the turbulent fluctuations being more capable to remove the solids from the formed bed or whether it is liquid viscosity, which results in the hydrodynamic shearing force. The results demonstrate that liquid viscosity plays a role in the erosion mechanism and yields different erosion velocities of the solid bed hence, it should be taken into account when modeling flow pattern transitions for solid-liquid flows. Prior studies have not identified this and it could be the reason of the disagreement between theoretical models and experimental and field data.

It has been demonstrated by Arrowhead Industrial Water that a proprietary reverse osmosis technology can be used efficiently, effectively, and economically to reduce the levels of cyanide species, heavy metals, and other ions as shown in Figure 1 to allow safe discharge of a permeate solution to the environment. A simultaneous benefit of this process was the cost savings of reduction in quantities of cyanide requiring destruction by hydrogen peroxide and recovery of a concentrated gold and silver value in the concentrate solution.

Although known primarily for native copper, the Keweenaw Peninsula of northern Michigan also has deposits of copper sulfide (chalcocite) ore. A number of small, but rich, deposits are present at relatively shallow depths near the base of a thick, steeply dipping sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Because much of the ore is fracture-controlled, the deposits appear to be ideal candidates for in-situ leaching. Fracture mapping from drill core and borehole logs coupled with borehole packer permeability tests are being applied to evaluate the suitability of the ore for in-situ leaching. A leaching scheme utilizing a bacterial-assisted ferric iron lixiviant is being tested at bench scale. A pilot scale test is being designed to evaluate the system in the field.

The metallurgical response of a deposit's various ore types usually has a strong impact on the flowsheet design of most mineral processing plants. This impacts the materials handling, equipment selection, capital and operating costs, and plant availability. Because of the rapid leaching characteristics of Chimney Creek ores a variation of the conventional gold plant, carbon columns and CIP was proposed. The proposal consisted of a washing stage which was installed between the typical leaching and CIP stages. The circuit was simulated in the lab and was modelled using a computer program to evaluate the metallurgical impact and the effect on the system's mass balances. Also, actual plant data was reviewed comparing the results that were achieved with the results that were expected.

Widely available silver and arsenic bearing concentrates can be smelted to produce a discardable slag, a base metal speiss, and a crude silver button which is easily separated from the other phases after solidification. This paper discusses the development of a novel process as an alternative to existing nitric acid leach methods for the production of high purity silver from the raw silver button. Direct electro-refining of the raw silver anode in a sulphate medium is integrated with downstream purification and recycling modules that are customized to allow efficient recovery of silver and saleable by­products. The test results, flowsheet alternatives and process details are presented and discussed in terms of overall technical feasibility, economical viability and environmental compliance considerations.

In past drilling programs for a multi-seam Texas lignite reserve, extensive e-log data was collected; however, little laboratory analyses were performed. As a cost and time saving incentive, sampling of lignite was intensified. In a recent drilling program in east-central Texas, detailed laboratory analyses and e-log information was gathered on a multi-seam lignite reserve of the upper Wilcox Group. This data will undergo statistical and geostatistical techniques in an attempt to discern whether or not predicted Ash and Btu/lb values can be derived from the e-log gamma-density relationships. Final characterization of the dataset will be used in a geostatistical model of that reserve. This model will be the basis for further geological investigations and mine planning.

Prediction and quantification of acid mine drainage (AMD) from a given rock unit is in its infancy. Acid Base Accounting is the current procedure. II is a useful screening procedure and is designed to indicate whether a rock unit will or will not produce acid. In this sense, Acid Base Accounting is qualiwtivc. Researchers at West Virginia University arc developing a prediction method to estimate how much acid will be produced over the life of a rock unit's AMD production. TI1c AMD prediction procedure can also evaluate the required rates and effectiveness of various AMD control amendments. This presentation discusses the WVU AMD prediction procedure in the context of historical approaches and indicates the mechanics and applications of this new technology.

For many major mining projects the time frame from initial planning to production can be measured in terms of decades. Hecla's Silver Shaft project, which is scheduled to go into production by the end of this year and includes a complete surface facility, shaft with an ultimate depth of 2,348 meters (7,700 feet), complete ore pass and loading pocket system, and 610 meters (2,000 feet) of development drifting and stope preparation, was initially concieved in the Fall of 1979. This duration of a mere four years from conceptual engineering to production is a testimonial to what can be accomplished when a progressive mining company and an innovative contractor work together as a team rather than developing into two warring camps as often happens.

Dunn has written an excellent paper providing a wealth of advice on what is often the most costly consumable in the mineral processing plant. As he pointed out, grinding media selection and quality control can play a major role in successful plant operation. Owing to the economic importance of this topic, there are some important factors related to media sizing that I believe merit further comment. Dunn made reference to a slightly simplified version of the Azzaroni (1981) equation and pointed out its successful use for the Henderson SAG and Climax ball mills. Although both formulas are empirically based on successful plant experience, a notable discrepancy between them is that Bond has factored the work index by the ore specific gravity. This is invariably so, as the Bond work index is derived from the mass grindability (in grams per revolution) measured in a test mill with a fixed volume of solids load (Bond, 1961). A material having the same structural integrity but double the density of another will have double the grindability and just over half the work index. Thus, for the general case, specific gravity should be incorporated into any media sizing formulation that uses work index as the criterion for resistance to breakage.

Acid rain legislation included in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 caused a great deal of uncertainty regarding the price, source and production quantities of coal supplied to the eastern coal market. Powder River Basin and other western coals continue a rapidly accelerating migration eastward. South American coals move into the northern markets. States are proposing legislation to assist utilities in complying with the new regulations in hopes of maintaining their own coal industries. Some utilities question the long-term availability of eastern compliance coal. Major coal producers must make decisions now to assure their continuing presence in the market place. Several companies have adopted a strategy to acquire eastern compliance reserves, while others have invested in technology to compete as a low-cost producer. Legislation "Acid rain." This is a topic that was debated within the scientific, environmental and industrial communities for years. Those discussions resulted in a large outlay for the federal National Acid Precipitation Assessment Project (NAPAP), which was then ignored. Acid rain then became the subject of a "60 Minutes" broadcast that debunked the acid rain theory, supporting the NAPAP study conclusions. In the final outcome, however, acid rain was the driver for the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.
