Simulation of Mineral Processes is now commonly used by the Engineers in charge of plant design or optimization but a good knowledge of the simulation tool is still needed to conduct a project. A new level of algorithm has been defined above the simulator to answer directly to the user's questions. This level has been called the supervisor of simulation, which is using the automation concepts of sensors and actuators. At any place of the flowsheet (i.e., a stream or an equipment), the user may indicate which value could change by graphically implementing an actuator. Then, he can evaluate the effect of the variation of this value at any other place of the flowsheet by inserting a sensor. Thus, by example, it becomes possible to look at the evolution of the recoveries and/or the circulating loads when scanning an interval of the possible teed flowrates. This approach conducts to an increased facility in using a simulator and in analyzing the predictions. It is also a very valuable tool for permitting to characterize the sensibility of the simulation results to the variation of some settings (e.g., load of grinding media, rotation speed, water addition, etc.) or feed characteristics (e.g., flowrate, sizes, grades, grindability, etc.). Thus, the most important variables can be identified for design and pre-control optimization of plants. This new level of simulation will be implemented in a further version of the USIM PAC simulator and selected examples are presented.

Significant lost time delays were experienced by Carbonifera de Nueva Rosita, S.A. de C.V. ("CNR") during mining development of the Pasta de Conchos Mine ("the Mine") near Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico. Furthermore, methane gas concentration in the return air course had exceeded 1.0 percent. Resource Enterprises, Inc. ("REI") was contracted by CNR to recommend an approach to reduce methane emissions at the Mine. In order to recommend a degasification approach, REI and CNR obtained geologic and reservoir characteristics of the Double coal seam, Olmos Formation. A vertical core hole was drilled to obtain core samples to determine gas content (average 8.4 cm3/gm) and to conduct a slug test to estimate permeability (34 md). This information was used to simulate gas productivity and drainage effectiveness. The simulation indicated that underground horizontal boreholes would remove significant quantities of gas in advance of mining in a reasonable period of time. Based on the results of the simulation study, an underground degasification drilling program was initiated at the Mine. In a six month period, five long in-mine degasification boreholes were drilled in advance of CNR's three to five years mining projections. Peak gas production from the five boreholes (approximately 2,750 cumulative meters) had exceeded 45,000 m3/D. Results to date have indicated a general reduction in methane concentration in the return air course below 0.8 percent.

The genetic characteristics of members of the genus Acidiphilium are poorly understood. As part of our study of the genetics of these bacteria, a search was made for an endogenous bacteriophage. Such a bacteriophage has been discovered. Several properties of the phage have been investigated. The phage has a lambdoid morphology and is somewhat larger than lambda. A variety of factors which affect phage stability have been investigated. The bacteriophage infects several of the strains that have been tested. Study of this bacteriophage should greatly increase our understanding of genetic mechanisms in Acidiphilium.

Introduction Amidst the apparent chaos of the final push to complete a major construction project, a small group of specialists works with great intensity. Armed with yellow "in test" and green "turned over to operations" tags, these startup engineers follow detailed preoperational test procedures to confirm that a plant is ready to operate. They follow a test schedule designed to complete individual process system in the order they will be needed by operations. After extensive preliminary testing, the startup engineers begin the truly exciting part of their work - initial operations. The thrill of engaging the clutch for the first time on a 10,000 horsepower grinding mill makes all the long hours worthwhile. Preoperational testing and startup are of critical importance to the success of a project. No other aspect of a construction project allows such opportunities for success or failure, and no other aspect is so critically influenced by careful planning. At Bechtel, the tasks of preoperational testing and startup are among the responsibilities of the Mine and Plant Operations group. The Preoperational Testing Process Preoperational testing is the transition phase between constructon and startup on a new plant. It includes the preparation of detailed test schedules and procedures. The schedules are used to coordinate construction completion activities, so that systems are available for startup and operations in a rational sequence. The procedures form the basis for performing the testing and documenting its completion. Tests include instrument calibration, wire insulation tests, wire termination verification, mechanical alignments and inspections, and system cleaning and flushing. Where possible, the systems are then operated on water and their performance recorded. Normally, either the construction contractor or a team of specialists has the responsibility to perform preoperational testing. Witnesses to the testing may be owner operations and maintenance personnel, engineers from the design firm, or specialists assigned to the project who provide assistance and guidance to the contractor in addition to witnesing the work.

At East Union, Knox County, Maine, near the shore of Crawford Pond, an outcrop of basic rock has been known for more than a century. The occurrence has been regarded as an unusual type of peridotite-pyroxenite, containing disseminated and massive pyrrhotite with nickel, copper and cobalt in recoverable amounts. From the outcrop, the sulfide body had been mapped more or less continuously for a distance of two miles through geophysical methods of several kinds. This paper describes the methods in sufficient detail to evaluate their significance. A core drilling program has con- firmed the location of the conductor and offers a positive means of correlating the geophysical measurements with the physical properties of the ore body. The history of the exploration offers a unique opportunity to evaluate the method of multiple geophysical methods.

The effect of pretreatment potential on the response of a gold electrode for Eh measurements in sulfide solutions was examined in terms of measured Eh values and electrode response time. The electrode response time is defined as the time required for the electrode to reach a steady-state value. The relationship between measured Eh values and the hydrosulfide ion concentration is established. The effect of pH, the reversibility of the gold electrode in the sulfide solutions, and the reproducibility of measurements are also investigated. A mixed potential theory is proposed to explain the observations.

Anyone with geothermal experience can readily attest that geothermal operations are a natural extension of oil and gas operations. A geothermal company and an oil company need the same type of people to do the same kind of work. In the geothermal industry, geologists and geophysicists define prospects through surface geology, analysis of surface seeps, magnetics, gravity, and resistivity surveys - techniques similar to those used in the petroleum industry. In addition, shallow (250-ft) temperature gradient holes often are used in geothermal operations. Landmen take geothermal leases that are patterned after oil and gas leases. Exploratory drilling is done with the same drilling contractors and same drilling rigs, with minor modification. Drilling foremen and drilling engineers share the same objective of making the most hole, in the shortest time, at the least cost, with a proper completion. Petroleum engineers test the wells, design the completions, determine the reserves, make economic calculations, work with the tax assessor, and manage the reservoirs. Production engineers build roads, locations and pipelines, install gas/liquid separators and meters, and operate production and injection facilities. A contract to sell steam to a public utility is required. Various governmental regulations, permits, environmental concerns, and public affairs pose similar problems in both industries. Also required of both are top management people who are acquainted with geologic risk, prepared to accept million dollar dry holes, willing to bid competitively at lease sales, and able to invest large sums based on a technology not yet fully proven. Successful geothermal development requires in-depth financial ability similar to that required for petroleum development. One of the most difficult problems in mining operation is how to determine optimum cutoff grades of ores at different periods over the lifespan of the mine that will maximize the net present value (NPV) of the mine. Cutoff grade optimization maximizes the NPV of a project subject to capacity constraints in the mine, mill and the market.. This paper describes the determination of a cutoff grade strategy based on K. Lane’s algorithm adding an iterative optimization factor calculated for every year during the live of the mine to maximize the project’s NPV. The introduced algorithm is a windows based program developed at Virginia Tech which coded in visual-basic within a spreadsheet environment (Excel). The resulting cut-off windows based program is a user-friendly tool which calculates interactively different mining cutoff grade scenarios. The benefits of the methodology are demonstrated using a hypothetical case study. The authors have observed an improvement of the total NPV using this iterative approach using a year by year optimization factor.

The resource classification methodologies have always been a topic of research and debate. There are both traditional and Geostatistical methods used in practice. Because of the uniqueness of each ore deposit, it seems almost impossible to have a single industry-accepted norm for resource classification. Therefore, some practitioners have adapted the methodologies to suit the deposits they are working on, but many simply use the methods they are comfortable with. Another reason for the existence of varying classification methodologies is the lack of an easy and established way to measure the confidence in the estimates. Therefore, their classification becomes a subject of debate. In this paper, a new approach is offered to classify the resources using a "Resource Classification Index." The approach using this index takes into account the local variation, the spatial data configuration around the block being estimated, as well as the traditional distance measures. A case study for a gold deposit is presented to demonstrate how this new index can be used to classify the resources. The results from this approach are compared to those from two popular classification methodologies.

This paper will discuss the value of cream a common information model for the mining industry. Information models are a proven technique for quantifying diverse information in a non-proprietary and easily understood manner. Combining information models with emergent data exchange technologies such as XML and SOAP, the mining industry could substantially reduce the costs of sharing information, reduce dependence on proprietary information systems, leverage inexpensive PC desktop technology, and provide a solid foundation for simplifying mine information systems. The paper will provide an overview of information modeling, discuss practical and proven applications of the modeling technique in the mining industry, propose how such a model could be developed in a collaborative manner and discuss the benefits of such an effort.

This paper reports on test work that explored the dissolution/precipitation reaction: ZnS + 2HCl - ZnC12 + H2S, which is part of a process used in the production of pure ZnS. The research focused on the influence of proton activity on the dissolution of zinc concentrates obtained from the Brunswick Mine No. 12 in Canada (Brunswick Mining & Smelting); the Red Dog deposit in Alaska (Cominco Ltd.); and the Tara deposit in Ireland (Outukumpu Zinc). A comparison between the results of the experimental dissolution as a function of pH and the dissolution predicted by thermodynamics suggest that the three concentrates contained sig¬nificant amounts of the more reactive mineral wurtzite, although XRD analysis showed mainly the presence of the mineral sphalerite.

Failure to achieve the planned production rate at new mines and mine expansions has a major adverse impact on a project's economics. A study of 60 steeply dipping tabular deposit-type underground mines showed that 35% of the mines did not achieve their production goals. An empirical formula based on the geometry of the deposit and expressed as a rate factor is applicable to select a production rate for this type of deposit. The formula is: Annual production rate = Rate factor x Rate multiplier. The appropriate rate multiplier for each category of deposit thickness and the associated risk can be used to select an appropriate production rate.

INTRODUCTION A population of several thousand uranium miners in the Colorado Plateau region of the United States has been under surveillance since 1957 using sputum cytology and other procedures. Attempts were made to collect sputum samples annually for those miners showing normal sputum or only minor abnormalities, and on a semi-annual schedule for miners having more severe cytological abnormalities. For individuals having carcinoma in situ or malignant cells in their sputum, samples were taken more frequently. As in any human population, however, these schedules were not always adhered to, and samples were often acquired less often than scheduled. On the basis of the thousands of sputum readings that have resulted from this surveillance, one can calculate the durations or sojourn times which individuals spend in the various cytologic states into which the sputum readings are classified. This paper presents some preliminary, descriptive results concerning relationships among the cytologic state duration distributions in this population, and their associations with other variables such as radiation exposure and cigarette smoking. There are several reasons for studying cytology results in this observational setting. Of considerable interest is the opportunity to gain insight into the preclinical natural history of lung cancer. Such information would be valuable in the future design and interpretation of screening programs for the early detection and treatment of lung cancer, should this activity prove to be of benefit in experimental trials. Secondly, it is of interest to determine if some characteristic of sputum cytology readings can be utilized to determine a decision point at which to transfer a uranium miner to another job category within the industry in order to effectively reduce his probability of developing lung cancer. For example, a reading of moderately atypical cells in the sputum has been suggested as a possible decision event which would be sufficient to warrant such a transfer. In the analysis which follows, an attempt will be made to develop information relevant to these issues. The data base for our analysis, largely developed over a period of more than 20 years by Drs. Geno Saccomanno and Victor Archer, contains sputum readings classified into one of eight cytologic states: normal, metaplasia, mild atypia, moderate atypia, marked atypia, suggestive, suggestive-equivocal, and malignant. The two suggestive states will not be considered as these categories seldom contain enough observations to generate meaningful results. The duration in a given cytologic state for a given individual is calculated as the sum of the intervals between consecutive sputum readings in that state. When two consecutive readings are in two different states, half the between-readings interval is assigned to each of the two states. Among all individuals in the data base, only those having at least two sputum readings are used so that a duration can be calculated. Furthermore, the analysis is limited to individuals whose successive readings are no more than 24 months apart, so as to focus on a population which was under surveillance on a reasonably regular basis. RESULTS The overall distributions for the cytologic states are displayed as histograms in Figures 1-3.

Pegasus Minera de Chile, Ltda. is completing three phases of metallurgical evaluation on the Pullalli project to develop a preliminary process flowsheet. A project feasibility study is in progress. The feasibility study includes a proposed process flowsheet designed based on results from the multiple stages of metallurgical evaluation. Phases I and II of metallurgical evaluation included laboratory scale heap leach and milling cyanidation testwork on multiple drill core composites and bulk ore samples from the Pullalli Project. Phase Ill included pilot scale milling/cyanidation testwork on Pullalli drill core composites. The proposed flowsheet includes selective mining and separate processing of low grade and high grade ores. Low grade ore will be crushed and heap leached. High grade ore will be milled leached for 12 hours in an agitated cyanidation circuit. After 12 hours of leaching, sands and slimes will be separated and the sands will be washed using a counter current cyclone (CCC) circuit. Partially leached and washed sands will be added to the crushed low grade ore for heap leaching treatment and permanent placement. Partially leached slimes will be thickened in a high capacity thickener and will be processed in a CIP circuit. Leached slimes will be placed in a tailings impoundment.

A small placer operation can be defined as one with a throughput capacity of 250 cubic yards an hour or less. The success of small placer operations after the values have been established, depend entirely on having the proper design. There are various types of placer deposits including marine, beach, desert, stream, bench, underground and even frozen placers. Each is unique and requires special considerations. Size distribution of alluvial placer ore varies from sand to large boulders. When boulders occur, they can become a problem to all types of excavating to a greater or lesser degree. Clay content and cementing are common in placer deposits. Some clay disperses easily in water while others, if not handled properly, will form clay balls that pick up gold and carry it to tailings. Overburden, depth of bedrock, vegetation, and ground and surface water must all be considered when designing a plant. Any equipment chosen should be capable of processing large volumes of material at a high efficiency. There are usually five steps to processing placer gravels, as follows:

The 1945 fire at the Braden (El Teniente) Copper Mine in Chile took 354 lives, and ranks as the most lethal metal mine fire in history. The mine was developed in the wall of a canyon over 900 m (3,000 ft) deep. Principal entrance was through a main haulage adit at the canyon bottom, and up through two internal shafts. Mining was by block caving from the top of the orebody with most of about 900 men on shift working in three production areas. Ore was transferred by gravity to the haulage level through a complex system of ore passes with associated ladderways. Normal mine ventilation was incast through numerous level portals and up- cast through the shafts and raises. The fire was confined to a maintenance shop just inside the portal of the lower production level. Smoke, gases and flammable vapors were drawn into the mine, and a subsequent explosion of the gases destroyed an air door and injected carbon monoxide into the workings. Falling water in a drainage raise near the fire made it downcast, which carried gases down to all the lower levels where they were drawn into the levels and then up connecting raises. Miners attempting to escape by climbing down the ladderways from the production levels were met and killed by the rising gases.

To reduce their sulfur emissions, many coal-fired electric power plants use wet flue-gas scrubbers. These scrubbers convert sulfur oxides into solid sulfate and sulfite sludge, which must then be disposed of. This sludge is a result of reacting limestone with sulfur dioxide to precipitate calcium sulfite and calcium sulfate. The majority of the sludge is simply landfilled, but with increasing landfillimg costs this can cost the plant millions of dollars per year. As a result, this option is rapidly becoming less attractive. Producing marketable materials from the sludge is a far more promising avenue, provided that the products can meet the necessary specifications at a reasonable cost. In this paper, a method is described for using froth flotation and water-only cyclones to remove unreacted limestone from scrubber sludge. The water-only cyclone was found to be very effective for removing the coarser unreacted limestone, grinding ball chips, gravel, and similar coarse impurities. Froth flotation was found to remove fine unreacted limestone, with a minimum of reagent addition.

It's 12:30 A.M. The day before had been a long one with problems ranging from proper application of shotcrete during cold weather and the follow-on precautions for curing, meetings with city officials to avert a job shutdown because traffic wasn't being maintained properly and finally a briefing before METRO's General Manager to bring him up to date on projections for meeting the operational date of June 1975. The phone rings and Officer Jones of the Park Police says "Mr. Lynch, this lady in the apartments overlooking the jobsite is complaining of noise and she wants the job shutdown". "Officer Jones, have you called the Project Manager or the Resident Engineer?" "Yes, sir, but there is no answer!" "O.K., Officer, I'll check it out." In calling the job, I can only get the guard, because the inspector is in the tunnel. After some time, the guard calls back and says he doesn't know the way down into the tunnel. I have since had a difficult time believing that one. In the interim I finally reached the Resident Engineer and explained the situation. And finally at 1:30 A.M. the inspector called the Resident to say that the Park Police stopped the job at 1:00 A.M. because we didn't respond promptly. A similar situation had occurred some 2 years previously. With great expectation, noise specifications were developed to correct the earlier situation that had occurred. These newly developed specifications were in force at the time of this most recent shutdown. Common sense would tell you that even though we had developed and implemented, we believe, some of the best and most practical noise specifications in construction practice today, we had not enforced them. A specialized Pore-Fluid Array sampler (PFA) was designed to collect and store pore-fluids to monitor temporal changes of ions and gases in gas hydrate bearing sediments. We tested the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry records hydrate formation or decomposition events and reflects local seismic activity. The PFA is a seafloor probe that consists of an interchangeable instrument package that houses OsmoSamplers, long-term pore-fluid samplers; a specialized low-dead volume fluid coupler; and eight sample ports along a 10-meter sediment probe shaft. The PFA was deployed at Mississippi Canyon 118, a Gulf of Mexico hydrate site. A 160-day record was acquired from the overlying water (OLW) and 1.3 meters below seafloor (mbsf). Fluids were measured for dissolved chloride, sulfate, and methane concentrations and dissolved inorganic carbon and methane stable carbon and deuterium isotope ratios. Chloride and sulfate did not change significantly over time, suggesting the absence of gas hydrate formation or decomposition events. Over the temporal record, methane concentrations averaged 4 mM at 1.3 mbsf and was thermogenic in origin (d13C-CH4 = -32.4±3.4?). The timing of an anomalous 14 mM methane spike coincided with a nearby earthquake (Mw=5.8), consistent with the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry reflects seismic events. Selective-flocculation process development generally involves single-mineral flocculation tests to identify the appropriate polymer experimental conditions for achieving the desired selectivity. Invariably the selectivity predicted on the basis of such tests is not realized when mixed-mineral tests are conducted. A systematic experimental investigation revealed that adsorption of the polymer on various substrates is critical to selecting the suitable flocculant. Simultaneously, a mathematical model was developed to predict the overall process of efficiency with a given polymer. In this paper, the results of these efforts to scientifically design a suitable selective flocculation process are presented.
