This paper presents a strategic plan for automation, plant integration and process management being implemented at the Chuquicamata mining and metallurgical complex of Codelco-Chile. This five-year plan considers different levels of process control and plant integration, which include instrumentation and direct control, process models and supervisory control, plant information integration, and real time process and plant wide management. The conceptual solution developed defines an architecture for the overall system and the projects to be implemented by each production unit, as part of the proposed solution for the division wide process control, plant integration and real time process management. An estimate of the cost benefit relation of the plan is also given.

"INTRODUCTION Sorting technology has advanced rapidly recently. Of the two possibilities particle sorting has advanced especially in introducing new sensors and the use of multiple sensors. The analyzing and computing lead times have also shortened. This has made it a viable technology option for many applications but not for the most important sorting task at a mine; the run-of mine ore. Bulk sorting, however, has advanced in smaller steps, even if the technology has the capability to tackle the run-of-mine ore and offers a high potential to bring mines substantial economic benefits. The sensors, which are useful are restricted by the difficult operating conditions or by the ore characteristics. One of the important features of run-of-mine sorting technology is the major material handling infrastructure required. The capital expenditure can be substantial requiring good understanding of the sortability curve (grade-recovery curve) behavior of the ore. This paper discusses one industrial case, where substantial amount of data measured from the ore feed belt has been obtained. This data was then analyzed for the grade recovery curves obtainable from that ore with sorting. EXPERIMENTAL The XRF measurement used was the FCA device from IMA Engineering (Fig.1). It is a specially built version of XRF designed to operate with coarse material. The measurement was situated at the main belt conveyor taking ore from the primary crusher to the stockpile. The crushed ore was about 80% -300 mm at a capacity of 1100-1200 tph (Fig.2). Measurement times were varied from 30 seconds to a minute. Measurements were obtained over several months.As the XRF is a surface distribution measuring technique, the measurement was first tested upon accuracy and reproducibility against plant daily wet chemical assays and against on-line Courier feed analysis. As there is a varying delay in the ore stockpile, the delay time was used as a variant in the validation. Different measurement times were tested for accuracy. A one minute measurement time gave a total measurement relative standard error, which was both for Cu and Ni below 3%. The results showed also very robust correlations; for Cu, the correlation coefficient was R > 0,94 for one minute measurements over three months and R > 0,86 for Ni respectively. Fig 3. Semi-autogenous, (SAG), milling operations can realize substantial Increases in mill throughput by removing and crushing critical size, slow grinding, material from the SAG mill. Full-scale plant testwork showed that modifying the Kidston SAG/ball circuit to a semi-autogenous-ball milling-crushing (SABC) circuit would increase plant throughput by 25 to 30%. The methods used to determine the value of the SABC circuit and the design of the circuit are discussed.

Experiences gained using computers in the mining and geological environment have shown that it is quite rare for a system or the data it stores to be truly stand alone. Just as the mining enterprise aims to have a smooth integration of operations from exploration through mining and extraction to sales, so it should develop all its information systems within an overall framework or architecture which covers the applications and data as well as the computer hardware and communications. This paper discusses methods of achieving such an architecture, and describes some of the benefits it can have on the development and implementation of information systems. The key aspects are the identification of the business functions and the data that they use, and ensuring that the IS plan supports the overall objectives of the enterprise. Hardware and communications policies should be based on the plans for the applications and data, rather than the reverse.

A laboratory testing program was con- ducted to investigate the shear strength along specific soil-liner interfaces for five types of liners of varying thicknesses. Results indicated a bilinear relationship between shear stress and applied normal stresses ranging from 276 to 1000 pKa (40 to 145 psi). Friction angles along the soil- liner interface below the break point normal stress (7.5 to 19 degrees) were lower than those recorded above the break point normal stress (14.5 to 39 degrees ).

Certain external forces affect the manner in which business is conducted. and in recent years changes in the business environment have altered how some of these external forces affect the management of a business. These changes must be understood and considered in definition of the strategy of the business. Implementation of the strategy must assure commitment from all departments within a company, and this commitment sometimes involves compromises to assure that a department's goals mesh with the overall business objective such compromises must be externally motivated. i.e. for benefit of the customer. Complete implementation transcends internal departments to all aspects of managing the efforts in the marketplace.

Over 95 percent of the world's refined copper is now produced by electrolytic processes. The bulk of this electrolytic copper comes via the conventional route for sulfide ores of concentration, smelting and electro-refining. A rapidly increasing percentage of world production is now achieved using hydrometallurgical routes involving dissolution of the copper values from minerals, purification of the resultant leach solution by solvent extraction and finally deposition as cathodes by electrowinning. The technology can now be considered mature and this paper endeavors to summarize recent developments which, from the authors' perspectives, are important.

Some important electrochemical aspects involved in the bioleaching of mixed sulfides have been discussed with reference to selective sphalerite dissolution from different binary mineral combinations. Combination potentials and galvanic currents were measured in different binary combinations of sphalerite with other minerals such as galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite in order to under- stand the electrochemical dissolution behaviour of sphalerite when coupled with other minerals. The effect of applied DC potential was also studied with reference to selective sphalerite dissolution from a binary mineral mixture. An application of a potential of -500 mV (vs SCE) was found to enhance bacterial growth as well as selective sphalerite dissolution. Factors influencing bioleaching of sphalerite under a negative applied potential are discussed.

In the present work, dielectric spectroscopy experiments were conducted on bentonite samples collected from Milos Island, in order to study their electrokinetic behavior in correlation with water content and mild heat treatment. Low-frequency dielectric spectroscopy has proved to be a power tool in the study of the electrical behavior of clay-water systems, because polarization and relaxation processes typically affect response at frequencies below 100 kHz. Therefore, dielectric and conductivity measurements in the frequency range of 10mHz to 1MHz were carried out by means of a high-resolution broadband spectrometer on bentonite samples, at various levels of hydration. The evolution of dielectric response was also examined after annealing of the samples. Experimental data were computer fitted with the empirical Havrilliak?Negami dielectric relaxation function on which a conductivity term was superimposed. The evaluated parameters of the fitting function are shown to be strongly affected by the water content of the measured samples.

Skam deposits considered as porphyry copper deposits have been classified into three basic prospecting models: (I) the skam deposit associated with a mineralized intrusive (Pima-Mission), (2) the deposit associated with a barren igneous stock (Ertsberg), and (3) mineralized rock that seems to have no clear association with apluton (Phoenix). Pima-Mission, Christmas, and many other copper-bearing skarns developed in carbonate sequences near mineralized intrusives form an important part of the deposit. Historically, copper derived from the mineralized intrusion accounts for less than half of the metal produced by most porphyry mines, as most mineralization occurs in the intruded rocks. Skam mineralization is an important part of wall-rock metal deposition, because carbonate sequences are preferentially replaced by sulfide and skarn minerals. Exploration for skam mineralization is an important phase of porphyry copper exploration. Impure carbonate beds can become better host rocks for skam deposits than pure carbonates, and these in particular should be included in porphyry-exploration programs if the impure strata are cut by the stock. Skam deposits can also form near stocks that are barren of sulfide. In this model, the two best ore guides are strata favorable for mineralization (usually impure carbonate beds) and the intrusive contact. Faults can also act as important ore controls. Some skarn deposits form that have no clear genetic connection with a stock, although intrusive rocks are known in the district. In such cases, the best ore guides are strata and district-wide faulting. Dikes and sills are also common and mineralization can locally prefer their contacts even though the igneous rocks are barren. Skam minerals are influenced by the chemical composition of the carbonate. Forsterite, brucite, tremolite, and talc are common in skams developed in dolomitic beds. Skams derived from calcic beds often contain wollastonite, calcite, stilbite, or idocrase. Diopside, however, is a common accompaniment of copper sulfide in skam regardless of the original composition of the carbonates. Tremolite and possibly other amphiboles and chlorite can occur significantly in the zinc-lead portion of skams. Gamets occur in magnetite, copper, and zinc-lead zones of skams, but are not as diagnostic as diopside for the copper zone or tremolite for the zinc-lead zone. A general desciption of skam-deposit mineralogy can be used to construct prospecting models of porphyry copper skams. An abstract of such a description follows.

It was previously reported that dolomite samples from different locations showed varying flocculation behavior with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). In this study, a Florida dolomite sample was examined, and it was determined that palygorskite associated with dolomite was responsible for its flocculation with PEO. A detailed characterization of dolomite samples from different locations was made by electrokinetic, XRD and FT-IR analyses, and the relevance of these characteristics to flocculation with PEO is discussed.

Since the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) was passed in 1977, coal mine reclamation has been restricted from utilizing bluff-1ike features in permanent reclamation. This restriction is based on those provisions of SMCRA which require the elimination of all highwalls. In 1987, the Wyoming Mi ni ng Association began an effort to acquire the ability for coal mines to utilize bluffs in permanent reclamation for the purpose of enhancing the post-mining land use. The regulatory reform approach being uti1ized includes formation of a work group with members from industry, government, agriculture, and environmental organizations to prepare a proposal. Advantages of this approach are discussed.

GEOLOGY One of the largest copper resources in North America occurs in the Bingham mining district, located 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Salt Lake City, UT. Anaconda's present contribution to the development of this resource is the Carr Fork mine. (Fig. 1, Bingham district plan map.) The Carr Fork story began about 300 million years ago when a thick sequence of sedimentary quartzite and limestone was deposited in the Oquirrh Basin. Subsequent earth stresses formed a series of west-northwest-trending overturned anticlines and synclines that were later offset by northwest-striking thrust faults and northeast-trending normal faults. (Fig. 2, Bingham district cross section.) About 38 million years ago the Bingham stock was intruded into some of the folds, resulting in the formation of porphyry ore in the intrusive, and fissure, replacement, and skarn ore deposits in the sediments. The Carr Fork skarns were formed preferentially in two limestone units, called the Yampa and Highland Boy, which average about 46 m (150 ft) in thickness, separated by about 76 m (250 ft) of quartzite. Copper mineralization consists almost entirely of chalcopyrite associated with pyrite and molybdenite in a gangue of garnet, diopside, magnetite, quartz, and carbonate. Molybdenum, gold, and silver are economic byproducts. (Figs. 3 and 4, indicated ore in plan and section.) EXPLORATION HISTORY The West Mountain mining district, of which Carr Fork is a part, was organized in 1863, after leaf-silver ore was discovered in the Carr Fork of Bingham Canyon. However, it was not until 1873, when the Bingham and Camp Floyd railroad to the town of Bingham was completed, that the mining camp flourished. Many small mining companies in the district were reduced, often through consolidation. By 1937 only the National Tunnel and Mines Co. was active in the Carr Fork area. In 1948 it declared bankruptcy, and was later purchased by The Anaconda Co. Anaconda conducted geologic investigations in the Bingham district until 1968, when a concerted diamond drilling program was initiated to fully evaluate the geologic potential of the Carr Fork area. The exploration program commenced with one diamond drill, but was enlarged to three drills following discovery of the first major ore intercept. Near completion of the exploration effort, large oil well rotary drills were used to drill to depths of 762 to 914 m (2500 to 3000 ft), after which the holes were completed by standard diamond drilling techniques. All holes were collared vertically, but considerable deviation occurred because of structure and rock conditions. This paper presents recent developments in the use of a CFD model for representing the flow of gases in the goaf of retreat faces. In France, it is of highest importance to optimize firedamp drainage in very gassy mines and nitrogen injection in faces prone to spontaneous combustion. Numerical modeling has been used to solve this problem. So the model developed has been first calibrated using a large quantity of field data and could then be used for various simulations. Though still in progress, this research has given promising results, many of them being already set into practice.

A process was developed to treat an ammoniacal leach liquor containing zinc using Di (2-ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as the extractant. The objective of this work was to develop a process package for the treatment of complex sulfide leach liquors. Zinc extraction could not be carried out directly from the ammoniacal solution in mixer-settler units because of crud formation and low extraction efficiency. After neutralizing the free ammonia with H2SO4, the extraction efficiency was only about 40%, due to the high concentration of (NH4)2SO4. To decrease the (NH4)2SO4 concentration, the free NH3 was steam stripped, and the resultant liquor was subjected to zinc solvent extraction. An extraction efficiency of 98% could be achieved by controlling the equilibrium pH. Stripping studies were also optimized after removing ammonia from the zinc-loaded organic. A continuous 100-hr operation that included extraction, scrubbing and stripping, was carried out successfully.

Four different scales of observation were used to evaluate the potential effects of a fluvial tailings deposit on water quality along the flood plain of the upper Arkansas River south of Leadville, Colorado. First, we collected surficial material and subjected it to batch water-leaching test. Second, we excavated and leached an intact eight-inch diameter core. Third, we examined the water quality of the shallow ground water beneath the fluvial tailings deposit, and fourth, we monitored water quality along a 5-km reach of the adjacent Arkansas River. Leaching of surficial samples indicates that there is a reservoir of readily water-soluble material yielding elevated metal concentrations and high acidity. However, there are minimal measurable water quality effects of the fluvial tailings deposit on the adjacent reach of the Arkansas River.

This article describes three practical applications of the Hill of Value (HoV) methodology within different stages of strategic planning for open-pit mining operations and projects. In the pursuit of optimal mine planning, this study establishes a comprehensive case study during the (i)design phase, by refining key parameters for efficient decisionmaking. (ii)production planning, where the HoV is used to define achievable production rates, enhancing operational effectiveness through a nuanced consideration of mining and processing capacities. (iii)Additionally, the study introduces a conceptual framework for orchestrating the optimal sequence of multiple pits during the planning phase, with a focus on maximizing project value.

In designing mine workings and adequate roof supports, it is indispensable to determine properties of the strata surrounding the workings. The proper selection of roof supports is based, before everything else, on a thorough knowledge of the roof rock strength, especially tensile strength. This parameter is a vital factor in the delamination of roof rocks and eventual cave-in. It is also important to know the properties of the floor on which the roof supports are set. While driving galleries, it is essential to know beforehand the strength of rocks that will be encountered in the near future during the work. The devices described will help to obtain this information.

During development mining, ventilation capacity may decrease and the ventilation requirements may depart from initially planned values depending on the mining rate, increases in the methane emission rate, and changes in ventilation airway leakages. Insufficient ventilation air quantities and the occurrences of high methane liberation rates can overwhelm the existing quantity of ventilation air and result in elevated levels of methane gas during development mining. This condition can both limit the development of that section and increase the risk for an ignition that may lead to an explosion. Thus, the prediction of ventilation air requirements prior to mining can enhance worker safety by reducing the likelihood that explosive methane-air mixtures form. This study presents an approach for prediction of methane inflow rates using coalbed methane reservoir modeling. For this purpose, a two-phase coalbed reservoir model of a three-entry type roadway is developed. In the model, grids are dynamically controlled to simulate development of entries. Examples are given for methane inflow and ventilation air requirements as a function of mining rate, development section length, mining height, and the existence of degasification boreholes. This technology can be used to limit the methane concentrations occurring as a result of the influences of various coalbed and operational parameters.
