As the mining industry searches for new ore discoveries increasingly under post-mineral cover, the process of mineral exploration has taken us from prospector to geologist to multidisciplined explorer to multi-disciplinary team. Multidisciplinary exploration techniques have improved in terms of sensitivities and penetration and more than ever before each technique requires specialists with appropriate training and skills to process data and interpret results. To produce a quality product, specialists must collaborate openly and honestly in an atmosphere where the collective result takes into account the knowledge and expertise of each individual and the relationships between all pertinent data sets.

Central system of ventilation, adopted almost universally in coal mines of India and elsewhere in the world, has often proved deficent in providing a cost effective solution to the acute ventilation problems of remote workings in many mines. Loss of air due to leakage through a number of stoppings, doors etc. and accumulation of heat and moisture by intake air on its way to a working through long and circuitous route are the main unavoidable reasons for low efficiency of the system, sluggish and oppressive ventilation of workings. Multi-zonal ventilation system using large diameter bore holes for feeding fresh air in the mine close to a working has been proposed as a viable economic alternative. The method promises to provide congenial environment at working faces without resorting to air conditioning or use of booster fan. Optimum location and diameter of bore holes as well as general design procedure have been dealt in the paper. Finally, the technical as well as economic advantages of the method over the conventional design have been highlighted with the help of a case study where ventilation system of an extensive shallow mine in Central India has been redesigned according to the old and the new concepts. The methodology is general enough for adoption elsewhere in other mines under similar circumstances.

Santa Fe Pacific Gold's Lone Tree mine is located in Humboldt County, NV, 45 km (28 miles) east of Winnemucca. The mine currently operates a 1.74-Mt/a (1.92-million stpy) run-of-mine heap-leach operation and a 2.27-kt/d (2500 stpd) refractory gold¬ore-processing plant. Most of the mill-grade ore reserves are refractory, mainly due to pyrite and arsenopyrite encapsulation of the gold. The autoclave pressure-oxidation circuit was commissioned in February 1994 to process the refractory ore. Mineralogy unique to the Lone Tree deposit allowed for the design of a partial-oxidation process. It takes advantage of the heterogeneous nature of the pyrite morphology. Partial oxidation has resulted in an autoclave plant that is able to achieve low operating-unit costs (Figs. 1 and 2).

Introduction Hydrogen peroxide is known to the mining industry as a powerful oxidant, able to attack and to destroy cyanide, the most important leaching reagent (Knorre and Griffiths, 1984; Griffiths, 1988; Griffiths, 1988). CN- + H202 => OCN- + H2O The most recent development, however, is the use of H202 as an oxidant in the cyanidation of precious metals. This application may appear to be a contradiction to the above mentioned detoxification process. This can, indeed, be the case if certain conditions are not considered carefully. Degussa has developed a new process to enable the application of H2O2, in this field without having any detrimental effect on the cyanide. The incentive to seek an oxygen supplier like H2O2 instead of air was the fact that one of the most important conditions for the fast dissolution of gold is the presence of physically dissolved oxygen in the pulp (Kydryk and Kellog, 1954; Warstell, 1987). 2 Au + 4CN- + 1 /2 O2 + H2O => 2 [Au(CN)2]- + 2 OH Complete gold recovery within a reasonable leaching time may only be achieved if the pulp is saturated with dissolved oxygen. Gold losses in leach operations mainly occur due to the following reasons: • In some cases, the saturation of oxygen in the pulp cannot be achieved by aeration due to the difficulty to transfer oxygen from the gaseous into the liquid phase. This happens, for example, in pulps with a high viscosity. In such cases, even violent aeration only results in a low concentration of dissolved oxygen in the pulp. • In any case, the starting phase of leaching requires the highest amount of oxygen. Therefore, it is especially important to raise the dissolved oxygen level to saturation in the starting phase. Peroxide assisted leach process (PAL) The intention of the process is to introduce oxygen in a liquid form. As a result of intensive research work, it could be shown that hydrogen peroxide can be used as a source of oxygen in the leaching of gold ores. To avoid side reactions, the following conditions must be applied: • Hydrogen peroxide must be diluted before it is added to the pulp. • The dosage of H2O2, must be properly regulated based on the oxygen level of the pulp. • An important part of the continuous 02-control is a special oxygen electrode, which resists the extremely abrasive action of the pulp.

INTRODUCTION Rock bolts are one of the most common mine support systems in use today with approximately 90 to 95 million used annually in the nation's coal, metal and non-metal mines. By far the largest majority of these are steel bolts with mechanical expansion shell anchors. Many theories have been advanced to explain the ground control achieved through the use of rock bolts. Most of the theories are applicable to a specific set of circumstances, geology, geometry, rock properties and in-situ stresses. Examples are those which relate the beam building or strata-hanging theories of ground support used in the rectangular openings of a coal mine(l). In tunneling and most metal mining, either circular or horseshoe shaped openings are normally used. Here, bolts may be used to develop a radial stress around the opening, which adds stability to that opening, or merely pin blocks of rock back into more stable ground so that they cannot slip. In most cases, the bolts are torqued to a specified value to seat the anchor and to achieve the pre-load or tension that is desired. To be effective, however, this tension cannot be lost through bolt slippage or creep frequently caused by blasting, moisture attack or raveling of the rock surrounding the drill hole, etc. Furthermore, in soft rock or in oversized holes, sufficient anchorage cannot be achieved with the mechanical anchor, and in very brittle rock the concentration of forces produced by the expanding anchor might cause a crack to propagate from one drill hole to the next. With the rapidly growing use of hydraulics in mining equipment, maintenance personnel should be familiar with the various components in hydraulic systems. Hydraulic systems do wear out - the fluids they transport are hot and turbulent, the equipment they power often imposes tremendous pressure pulsations and bending stresses, and the working environment is harsh. Therefore, even though hydraulic hoses are made of remarkably trouble-free components, they do need to be replaced periodically. There must be coupling methods that allow hoses to be replaced without disturbing other components. Couplings must also provide a variety of leak-resistant connections between hoses and other components in the hydraulic circuitry. Threaded Connection and Seals Hydraulic coupling thread ends and sealing arrangements are standardized, with many types available. Their outward appearance varies, but coupling configurations are recognizable by examining threads and seals and comparing them to the examples provided here. Iron Pipe Thread There are two kinds of iron pipe threads normally used in mining equipment circuitry - National Pipe Tapered Thread for Fuels (NPTF) and National Pipe Straight Thread Mechanical Joint (NPSM). The NPTF seal is the engagement of the coupling threads, called thread interference. When tightened, the tapered thread of the male fitting binds into that tapered thread of the female fitting to form a relatively leakproof seal (Fig. 1). In the NPSM seal, there is a 30° angle seat machined into the end of the male NPTF fitting. This seat engages with a mating 30° angle cone on the inside of the female fitting. Female NPSM fittings have straight threads, as opposed to the tapered threads of the NPTF fittings. However, most NPTF solid male fittings also have a 30° angle seat enabling them to be used with NPSM female fittings (Fig. 2). JIC and SAE Fittings Joint Industry Conference (JIC) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) seals are formed by joining two mating, conical metal surfaces. The coupling threads are used to bring and hold these surfaces together to form a leak-resistant seal. A JIC connection is a solid male threaded end, with a 37° machined male nose, mating with a 37° female flare seat. When connected, the mating surfaces are held together by the threads, but the threads do not form the seal. The female seat is created by flaring a tube end or machining the interior surface of a stem to 37°. A female JIC has a swivel nut, allowing the sealing surfaces to be joined together without twisting a hose or twisting the seats against each other (Fig. 3). JIC couplings are frequently used on low, medium, or high pressure hydraulic circuits on mining equipment and machinery. The SAE connection is similar in appearance and sealing characteristics to the JIC system, except the angle of the machined male nose and female flare seat is 45° (Fig. 4). "O" Ring Fittings Seals for "O" ring fittings are formed by compressing an "O" ring against an exposed machined surface on a mounting block or hydraulic component part. The U.S. Bureau of Mines research on the use of cement as an agglomeration aid allowed precious metals heap leaching to become an economically viable method of precious metal recovery during the 1980's. However, many agglomerated ore bodies still exhibited poor heap/agglomerate strength. Precious metal recovery was often too slow or required prohibitively high levels of cement to be economically sound. Problems with heap ponding, blinding, and solution channeling and "wash-out" indicated that there was a need within the industry to improve on existing agglomeration technology. An in-depth research effort was undertaken to satisfy this need. Three years of research led to a patent on the use of vinyl addition polymers as effective agglomeration aids. A close working relationship between Brewer Gold and Nalco Chemical Company aided in the development of this program. This paper details the pilot test work, the full-scale evaluation at Brewer Gold Company, and conclusions.

The Chinese city of Shanghai is one of the fastest growing in the world. To keep up with the growth, two tunnels, three-lanes each, are being built beneath the Yangtze River to connect Shanghai with the Changxing River Island. To complete such a large project, Herrenknecht Tunneling Systems was brought in to construct the largest tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world. The first Herrenknecht S-317 Mixshield has a diameter of 15.43 m (50.62 ft). It was built to construct one of the two 7.2-km (4.5-mile) tunnels. The tunnels are part of the Changjiang Under River Tunnel Project and will be at depths of up to 65 m (213 ft) beneath the Yangtze River in Shanghai-Pudong. These two tunnels are to be opened to traffic in April 2010, in time for Shanghai to host the World Expo. More than 20 million people live in the Shanghai area. The area itself has been growing at an extremely rapid pace for more than a decade and is in need of more space. The search extended beyond the natural limits of the Yangtze River Delta. As part of its incredible growth, 500 new vehicles are registered every day. The new tunnels will connect the Changxing River Island, with a population of approximately 600,000 people to the road traffic network. A bridge construction will also provide a traffic link between Changxing Island and the large island of Chongming.

This paper describes the techniques implemented at Randfontein Estates to develop twin-haulages at 'high speed'. An operation which culminated in the world record advance for twin-end multiblast cyclic development in hard abrasive quartzites. A major expansion project was planned for the mine, with the sinking of a third twin-shaft system (to be known as Cooke No. 3), to raise the level of ore production from 3 500 000 to 5 000 000 tonnes per alumm. Subsequent redesign of the proposed shaft system as a single 9 m brattice wall shaft took place, reducing the planned shaft sinking period by 12 months and saving an estimated R 250 000 (U.S. $ 330 000) in sinking costs. The advancement of the Cooke No. 3 Shaft sinking and development programme necessitated a rapid excavation schedule for two interconnecting twin-haulages from the existing Cooke No. 2 twin shaft complex to provide a second means of egress. An early holing between the two shafts would provide significant financial and technical benefits. Pre-development and equipping of shaft pillar excavations would enable a rapid shaft production build up and blocking out of at least one year's ore-reserves.

Today's subject of discussion, "OSHA AND ITS PROBLEMS", must be covered in the time allotted with a slight tongue in cheek approach, for if one is to believe that the "problems of OSHA" can be covered in a twenty minute review, he, himself, has one of three problems: 1. He has residual combat fatigue left over from World War II. 2. He is an egomaniac. 3. He is afflicted with both of the above. Clearly, the difference between divinity and humanity lies in their work. All human endeavor is plagued by errors and omissions, and unless one would be so facetious as to equate bureaucracy with godliness, our government-sponsored ventures seem to receive more than their share of missive missles with which to combat the ills of our society. Coming from an industry known for its undertaking of gargantuan projects, I feel capable of looking at things from the big picture perspective. No one would deny that the massive influx of government, both in the monetary and supportive personnel roles, has accomplished much. But only we, as tunnel constructors, have moved countless mountains of muck, placed endless yards of concrete and engaged the public on numerous fronts and in spite of all, at times have even made a profit! Profit! What a dirty word in our society today. It makes one shrink back from the filthy overtones dripping with the cloying scent of decay. Never shall we judge the success of our government programs with such a slimy yardstick as profit. No, for that which has been conceived in the bowers of Camelot, the measure must be more elevating and inspiring. Something to bring a proud bearing to our efforts! Characterizing the structure of such open-structured dusts such as diesel soot and those present in welding fumes plus any other dusts which were initially formed by precipitation or agglomoration of subsidiary units in a flame process has always been a difficult task. Recently, scientists have been able to use the concepts of fractal geometry to model the growth of diesel soot and fume fine particles and characterize their structure using fractal dimensions. The measured fractal dimension of a diesel exhaust at various levels of scrutiny can be used to study the health hazards posed by the soot. Thus, the fractal dimensions of the overall structure can be related to the dynamics of the dust both empirically and theoretically. In this communication, the use of fractal dimensions to describe the structure of smoke and fine particles which pose a respirable hazard are reviewed. Experimental studies linking the measured fractal dimensions of the fine particles to dynamics of the fine particles in respirators and in the lung are outlined.

This section is addressed to the computing needs of corporate (top) management which are less specialized than the computing needs of operating or divisional management described in the previous sections. It is essential that the computer be used as a tool to serve corporate management and that information and results are presented in a succinct form. A key responsibility of the manager of computer applications is to communicate well with corporate management. A common trap for computer management is to allow the development and implementation of sophisticated and academically interesting computer applications which do not enlighten corporate management in its decision-making task. Thus it is essential to devote sufficient time and effort to designing and specifying a computer system before developing and implementing the system.

This paper presents a stabilizing controller for flotation plants which uses a quasi-multivariable technique. The controller monitors all the levels in the plant, and by anticipating interactions between various parts of the plant, is able to stabilize the plant far more successfully than the normal plant control. Once stabilizing control has been achieved, optimization of the process becomes easier and more sustainable. An estimate of the improvement in metallurgical performance is made and a singular value analysis was conducted to verify that the multivariable algorithm will theoretically control better than a collection of individual PID loops. Metallurgical results are presented to show that the improvements are attainable in practice. Control by the Mintek algorithm was alternated with normal plant control, to show that the improvements are statistically significant.

When multiple mines operate in an area there are social, economic and environmental impacts which cumulate over space and time. These impacts require special attention. A collective approach is required to identify, assess and manage them. No assessment of sustainability of mining can be considered complete without accounting for cumulative impacts. This paper proposes a framework and typology to deal with cumulative impacts and tests this in a coal mining area in NSW Australia.

The Bokan Mountain area on Prince of Wales Island, AK, contains vast quantities of heavy rare earth minerals. To lessen the US dependence on foreign sources, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated yttrium recovery from this ore. By sulfating the ore at 250 ° C for 1 hr at an H2S04:ore ratio of 1:1 and then water leaching the sulfated material for 1 hr at 20% solids and 25ºC, over 74% of the yttrium, cerium, and lanthanum were solubilized. Solvent extraction (SX), using a synergistic combination of OPAP and DEHPA, selectively loaded 100% of the yttrium. Yttrium was stripped directly as a solid using a 2M, 35 ° C NaOH liquor. When the OPAP/DEHPA mixture was tested in a continuous SX circuit, yttrium loading and stripping were 100% and 96%, respectively. The organic showed excellent recyclability properties with minimal solvent loss.

Discussion by G. Le Bel The paper proposes three methods to determine optimum lifetime of a mining project 1. The conclusion is that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate (by coincidence). It is also stated that: "The stochastic and option pricing models, in addition to providing a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV (net present value) calculation, showed that the example project has the potential for substantially higher return. By explicitly considering a project's potential risks, the stochastic or option pricing techniques can more accurately describe its probable investment performance." This discussion is intended to demonstrate that: •It is no coincidence that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate. • The stochastic and option pricing models do not provide a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV calculation. •The potential for a substantially higher return is misrepresented. First, a review of investment decision theory in mining is needed. Net present value is the preferred performance measure because of the flexibility offered when comparing various alternatives. However, it presents the following disadvantages: • The discount rate selection is not straightforward. • The NPV obtained represents a deterministic characterization of the variables included in the cash flow calculations, i.e. a single-point estimate. Discount rate selection The opportunity cost of capital represents the rate of return that would be obtained if the capital was instead invested in other opportunities considered to exist. Such opportunities must be bypassed if the available capital is invested in the project studied 2. If these other opportunities carry risk similar to the project under analysis (for example, if they are other mining projects), there is no need to add incremental [ ] risk factors. On the other hand, if these opportunities are represented by the acquisition of government bonds yielding 7%, a risk premium factor must be included. The types of risks associated with a mining venture are shown in Table 1. Together they represent the "business risk" of being a mining company. The individual project risk is important to investors if it differs substantially from the business risk of the company and that of the other investments in mining ventures that we must pass up to invest in this particular project. A risk premium or discount would then be required. This can be illustrated by the following example. Consider that a company has two investment alternatives: one is the Cavender hypothetical project located in Nevada, and the other is the same project located in a civil war zone of central Europe. The second project requires a risk premium factor on the discount rate. Conversely, a project showing highly uncertain returns that are negatively correlated with the returns of the firm's other assets may decrease the company's corporate risk. Deterministic character of NPV calculation The cash flows used in NPV calculations are obtained from a set of variables. These variables are estimated using one parameter obtained from the engineering studies. Each parameter is thus a single value that is often termed a "realistic" or "best estimate" as opposed to "optimistic" or "pessimistic." The Development of Water Gel Explosives Water gels are the most recent development in the evolution of commercial explosives. They are replacing dynamite, having proven themselves to be excellent alternatives to this standard explosive. Water gels have steadily displaced dynamite over the past two decades. In 1959, they accounted for only 1 percent of the market they share with dynamite. By 1965, the share taken by water gels had grown to 21 percent. In 1970, it was more than 40 percent, and today it is nearly 70 percent. Black powder, the first widely used explosive, revolutionized mining and quarrying in its day. However, when nitroglycerin dynamite became available about a century ago, it rapidly displaced black powder because it provided greater energy for a given weight, much higher velocity for better rock shattering performance, and water resistance for easy use in wet conditions. During the past 50 years, ammonium nitrate has played a dramatically increasing role in explosives. First, it was used as an ingredient in dynamite, and then as the main component in nitrocarbonitrate blasting agents. About a quarter of a century ago, it began to find use in a simple and inexpensive mixture with fuel oil that has revolutionized the explosives industry and today fills about 80 percent of the requirements for explosives in the U.S., and certainly the bulk of blasting requirements worldwide. The post-apartheid South African government has instituted a new minerals policy. As part of the new policy, minerals rights are now held by the national government, not as private property. In addition, the national government desires to see a greater participation of all South Africans in the corporate mining arena. At the same time, the national government has adopted a policy of a strong monetary unit compared to the U.S. Dollar. The combination of these tow policies has led to changes within the platinum mining industry.

INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Contract A146, Tunnels from 5th/HILL Station to 7th/Flower Station, involves tunnel construction through the heart of downtown Los Angeles. The alignment of the tunnels passes beneath twelve buildings, ranging from a 3-story below grade parking structure to numerous 12 to 14 story buildings. The soil along the alignment is alluvium, consisting of silts and clays, clean sands and gravels located above the ground water table. Because of unstable ground conditions, which led to excessive ground losses in several instances, and because of the potential for excessive building settlements, it became necessary to design and perform a program of chemical grouting. The chemical grouting program was designed such that tunneling could proceed on a one shift per day basis, with chemical grounting being performed on the remaining two shifts. Each day 21,000 to 31,000 liters of sodium silicate grout were injected through sleeveport grout pipes installed 18 m deep through the tunnel face. Tunnel advance rates of 12 m per day, 60 m per week, under full chemical grout cover were achieved. The chemical grouting program virtually eliminated both ground loss and settlement and permitted successful excavation of the tunnels.
