This paper describes a new approach for examining the kinetics and mechanism of zinc dissolution from sphalerite concentrate in acidic ferric sulfate solution in the presence of manganese dioxide. A literature search was performed to access the possible action of the two oxidizing agents, i.e., ferric ion and manganese dioxide. The possibility of galvanic coupling between ZnS and MnO2 and the cyclic action of the redox couple, Fe2+/Fe3+, on these two minerals were theoretically examined based on corrosion principles. Expressions for the mixed potential (Em) and the mixed current (im) were derived for the relevant corrosion and galvanic couples. Leaching experiments were conducted to establish which of the above phenomena is operative during leaching. The results indicated that the dissolution mostly occurs by the action of ferric ion on ins producing ferrous ions. The presence of MnO2 enables a quick conversion of ferrous to ferric, which maintains the rate of in dissolution. The process has promising features for commercial exploitation.

The major use for tungsten in the noncommunist world is in production of cemented tungsten carbides for cutting, drilling, and wear parts. Other major uses include lamp wires, steels for tools, and armaments. Real tungsten prices have been in a general decline since 1977-1979 as the tungsten market undergoes basic and lasting structural changes.

A booster fan is an underground fan installed in series with a main surface fan and used to boost the air pressure of the ventilation air passing through it. To accomplish this objective, the fan is installed in a permanent stopping and equipped with airlock doors, a monitoring system, and interlocking devices between main and booster fan controls. The stopping and doors are used to prevent flow recirculation, and the monitors to ensure safe operation of the fan. A booster fan, properly sized and sited, can be used to create safe work conditions and allow the extraction of minerals from areas that would otherwise be uneconomic to mine. In deep and large mines with heavy emissions of air contaminants, the required quantities of air can only be supplied by using high pressure fans. These fans will inevitably induce significant losses of fresh airflow through the stoppings and doors. For well defined ventilation circuits, booster fans can be used to decrease the main fan pressures and reduce the leakage flows. However, this will require a good understanding of the correct ventilation practice, from planning to operation and maintenance of booster fans. The objective of this study is to investigate the conditions under which booster fans can be used safely and efficiently in underground coal mines. Specifically, the study is directed at (1) collecting reliable information on airway resistances and flow requirements from two large U.S coal mines, (2) collecting fan performance data from one or more existing coal mine where booster fans are used regularly, (3) monitoring the performance of booster fans in a laboratory model and an experimental mine, (4) developing a booster fan selection method to assist the ventilation engineer at the planning stage, and (5) training six M.S. or Ph.D. graduate students in advanced mine ventilation.

This paper outlines the patterns of methane emission in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations and discusses the effects that these patterns have on the decision as to whether the methane is most economically handled by ventilation alone or by means of a methane-drainage system in addition to ventilation. The costs of handling the methane in the ventilation system and the costs of implementing the methane-drainage system are discussed, as well as the costs related to the production of coal. The important issues of production slowdowns and gasouts are also discussed, as well as the proper response of mine management to such a situation. Suggestions concerning the keeping of production records related to methane problems are made, and the justification for more intensive economic analysis of coalbed methane extraction and utilization is discussed

Introduction In April 1998, AIS Sommer GmbH of Germany delivered the first laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) analyzer to the mining industry. LKAB's Kiruna iron ore mine in Sweden shared the costs and the risk of building the prototype. This marks the beginning of LIF analysis as a technique for quality control in mining and mineral processing. Photoluminescence analysis is well established. In most laboratories, fluorescence spectrometers are standard equipment for quality or pollution control. LIF is being used in several applications, including combustion studies and particle image velocimetry. However, it has mostly been used in laboratory environments. The availability of rugged lasers for industrial use brings this powerful tool to the forefront of production, even in the rough conditions found in mining and minerals processing. Laser-induced fluorescence Basics. Fluorescence of naturally occurring minerals has fascinated man since scientific investigation of this phenomenon commenced about 200 years ago. However, importance in industrial application and peripheral activities. Hand sorting of ore under ultraviolet (UV) lamps is seen as an archaic method. Long gone are the days when geologists set out at night with UV hand lamps to find valuable ore deposits, especially those of tungsten. Today, fluorescent minerals are considered collectors' items and museum exhibits. In the late 1960s (Hemphill, 1968) and during the 1970s, attempts to use lasers for excitation of fluorescence in minerals led to the development of an airborne fluorosensor (Seigel and Robbins, 1980). However, this prospecting technology did not gain industry acceptance and vanished from the market. During the past seven years, ongoing research of the LIF of minerals resulted in new findings that give good reason to revive the interest in fluorescence and its use in the mineral industries (Broicher and Zydek, 1995; Broicher, 1998). Fluorescence is defined as the short-lived form of photoluminescence, in which matter emits visible radiation during and after irradiation with light – the fluorescence generally being of a longer wavelength than the irradiation. Fluorescence of matter is described by: • the absorption spectrum, • the emission spectrum, • the decay curve and • the quantum efficiency. The absorption spectrum shows the fluorescence intensity in a fixed spectral band as a function of the excitation wavelength, while the emission spectrum shows the fluorescence intensity at varying emission wave- lengths for a fixed excitation wavelength (Fig. 1). The decay curves describe the exponential decrease of the fluorescence intensity with time. The quantum efficiency is the ratio of irradiating energy to emitted energy. Divided opinions concerning dredging-permit locations and boating uses on the Kansas River in northeastern Kansas led to a study of the recreation potential on the river by a legislatively mandated interagency group (five agencies) that included the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS). In addition, the KGS conducted its own study of the river corridor, encompassing the development, geology, and economic resources of the corridor (Brady and others, 1998). The corridor area is 12 mi wide and 140 mi long (171 river miles). Included in the study was the potential impact of restric¬tions to river dredging. The Kansas River and its floodplain in northeastern Kansas are underlain by Lower Permian and Upper Pennsylvanian limestones and shales. The river and its floodplain are the major sources of sand and gravel for northeastern Kansas, and the limestones along the river bluffs supply crushed stone and building stone. The population of the 10-county area bordering the river has grown by 20% since 1980, and now comprises nearly 40% of the state's population (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1996). Projections (Floerchinger, 1992) indicate close to 50% of the Kansas population will reside in these counties by 2025, with a continued increase in the demand for aggregates. Factors such as floodplain width, price and availability of land, and overburden ratios tend to favor river dredging on the lower part of the river, and floodplain or pit dredging on the upper portion. The use of alternate sources of sand and gravel such as the Missouri and Arkansas Rivers would increase sand prices due to transportation costs to much of the 10-county area. In 1996, river and pit dredges along the Kansas River supplied more than 3 million tons of sand and gravel valued at about $8 million to northeastern Kansas. As a result of its study, the KGS had concerns with the idea of large recreation zones on the river that excluded river dredging in areas of presently large population and projected population growth. This controversial issue is likely to recur elsewhere.

The commercial deployment of advanced fine-coal cleaning technologies depends on cost-effective approaches for efficient separation and ancillary operations in handling, dewatering, drying, and transporting coal fines. As a result of two solicitations under the High-Efficiency Preparation component of the Department of Energy Coal Preparation Program, several projects were initiated for testing and evaluation of emerging technologies and equipment that address operational difficulties associated with coal fines. This paper will update the status of those projects and discuss how the technologies they represent can ameliorate some problems associated with coal fines in today's preparation plants.

Over the past twenty years people throughout the world, but particularly in the United States, have been taking an increasing interest in the environment, sources and causes of pollution, and pollution abatement. Air quality in the United States has been and continues to be an area of primary emphasis. In 1970, the US Congress passed the Clean Air Act and subsequently revised and strengthened it in 1977 with the issuance of the New Source Performance Standards. The Act has been further strengthened with the passage of the 1990 Amendments. By far the largest single source of sulfur dioxide (SO,) pollutants are coal fued electric generating power stations. Hence, a substantial portion of the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) research and equipment installation has been geared to the utility industry. Several competing FGD technologies were touted during the period 1970 to 1990 with varying degrees of success. Subsequently, the more successful technologies have been accepted, revised, and improved to the point that by 1991 third and fourth generation technology is available. A second area of emphasis for FGD has been coal fired industrial boilers. While individually they are much smaller than any electric utility generating station, they do represent a significant source of sulfur pollution. However, due to the size of industrial boilers and their location within industrial and educational complexes, the wet scrubber technology being employed by the utilities is not appropriate for these applications. Hence, fluidized bed combustion (FBC) technology has been developed for the industrial boilers. Since the installation of the first full scale test unit at Georgetown University, several equipment vendors have come forward with an increasing array of more sophisticated FBC units. Currently, FBC technology has matured to the point that the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), in cooperation with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), has installed an FBC system on a 250 MW test unit at the Shawnee Power Station in Kentucky.

The objective of mine ventilation is to provide suitable environmental conditions in working places at an economical cost. Maintaining a stable air flow, i.e., a flow quantity and the direction, is of vital importance. In practice, however, air flow quantity in underground openings varies continuously. Therefore, the stability of air flow means relative stability that is the flow in a branch moves along a certain direction while the variation in air quantity stays within acceptable limits. Many underground mines have low stability of mine air flow because almost all types of ventilation systems involve complex diagonal branches through which air flow quantity and, more importantly, the air flow direction may change easily. This creates extremely hazardous, unstable conditions, especially during emergencies. This paper deals with the directional stability of air flows in underground mines in single or multiple fan systems. It examines the rules of directional changes of air flows in diagonal branches, and proposes a method of calculating the stability conditions. It provides a criterion that may be used in designing new mine ventilation systems to ensure a desired degree of stability or in improving the existing systems.

"INTRODUCTION Tunneling and underground excavation is related to handling of uncertainties, risks associated with geological conditions are significant and ‘unexpected geological conditions’ often claimed. This fact was brought to the table long ago, and ITA (the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association) published its 25 Recommendations on Contractual Sharing of Risks in 1988 (Ref. 1). This public-cation constitutes an important asset to the tunneling industry in terms of being a guideline for those working with contractual issues, even today almost 30 years after being published. A more recent document is the ITIG code of practice for risk management of tunnel works from 2015 (Ref. 9). Various countries or geographical regions have their own view and tradition on risk sharing and tunnel contracts. In Scandinavia unit rates contracts are most commonly used with bid-build model, it shares risk between owner and contractor, owner retains the risk for geological conditions while contractor carries risk for performance efficiency. Rock strengthening is determined assessing rock mass quality encountered at tunnel face. Grouting is applied to stem water. Actual quantities may differ from the contract’s BoQ but a flexible contract with remuneration is installed to enable adjustment of actual quantities. Variations of quantities involve a clause to adjust construction time. Unit price contracts deals with expected and foreseen still ‘unexpected geological conditions’, if the ‘unexpected’ element results in variations in quantities. Work activities have quantities and ‘standard capacities’ for regulation of construction time. Variations in quantities are expected in tunnelling and hardly deserve the term ‘unexpected’. If truly unforeseen geological features necessitate work not included in the BoQ, then the contract must be supplemented and can be said to be inappropriate. Fixed price contracts may not provide the intended predictable cost and is as such also inappropriate in the view of a risk sharing principle, once the geological baseline proves to be incorrect. ‘Adjustable fixed price’ contracts, combining unit rate and fixed price, may prove suitable."

Application of computer-based systems for ventilation process monitoring makes it possible to widen the system functions with those connected with long-term data analysis. It allows the mine ventilation engineer to carry out necessary preventive actions. In future the wide application of computers and sophisticated expert systems together with automation equipment (like remotely controlled regulators and fans) will allow to gradually introduce minewide systems for air flow control. To achieve this goal research work is carried out using data from a mine ventilation monitoring system and methods of computer analysis of time series. With the use of digital filtering the measuring signal spectrum has been divided into three subranges components of which are important with regard to various needs of mine ventilation staff as well as to monitoring and control system functions.

Introduction Many solids processes that look feasible on paper or even in pilot studies become disasters in full scale. Changes in solids flow characteristics from pilot scale to full scale be- cause of larger solids contact pressures, thermal shocks, or unforeseen temperature excursions often cause full-scale solids flow problems not encountered in the laboratory or pilot studies. Fortunately, proper applications of solids flow principals and solids flow properties measurement at full scale conditions can anticipate the problems and thus provide an accurate basis for full-scale design or existing plant modifications. Solids flow properties The basic solids flow property definitions are given in Table 1 (Johanson, 1966, 1976, 1978, 1985). In this section, the author will discuss each property and its potential for creating full-scale pilot plants. Unconfined yield strength The unconfined yield strength of a bulk solid determines the tendency for cohesive hangups of the solids in the process and is effected by the time at rest, chemical reactions, temperature, liquid content, solids size consist, and phase changes of solids or fluids involved in the process. One of the common mistakes is to consider the solids condition only at the beginning and the end of the process. For example, consider the direct reduction of iron ore. The feed solids are free-flowing, hard lump ore or pellets. The end result is a hard, free-flowing reduced sponge iron lump or pellet. One might conclude that the process involves free-flowing lumps. This conclusion may seem reasonable based on laboratory studies oreven pilot plant studies where solids contact pressures are very low. Unfortunately, during the reduction reactions at high temperatures, the rock or pellets soften and, with solids contact pressures associated with the full-scale plant, may fuse together, thus providing a possible solids hangup in the moving bed reactor not evident in the low pressure pilot scale. Fig. 1 shows some typical unconfined yield strength measurements for pellets as a function of solids contact pressure at various times at rest. Note at low consolidation pressures, generally associated with laboratory or pilot plant studies, the pellets show no strength unless held at rest for an extended time. This will produce a very free-flowing condition in pilot plants that will not exist in the full size reactor.

Microscopic Studies were performed on ore samples from the Muro banded iron ore deposit in Nigeria and the Marampa iron ore deposit in Sierra Leone. Ore characteristics that affect processing of both ores were compared with a view toward assisting mineral processing engineers in choosing the most suitable methods for upgrading the ore. The Nigerian ore contains 30% to 37% (by weight) Fe and the Sierra Leonean ore contains 34% to 51% (by weight) Fe. Hematite is the main iron mineral in both ores. The Sierra Leonean ore is relatively coarse grained (typically around 250 µm) and can be upgraded by conventional gravitational methods. In contrast, the Nigerian iron ore is fine grained and must be ground to -74 µm to liberate the hematite for recovery by flotation. Both ores contain high percentages of phosphorus and sulfur, which are above the required specifications for direct reduction and blast-furnace practice. These deleterious elements can be rejected by grinding and flotation.

Introduction During the past several years, persistent concerns about an economic slowdown in India have tempered capital-expan¬sion plans. This has encouraged companies to find methods of increasing the capacity of existing production equipment. One of the more cost-effective methods of increasing produc¬tion capacity without major capital investment is to improve equipment maintenance to prevent needless machine down¬time. This can have a significant financial impact because of reduced maintenance costs and increased machine availabil¬ity. The maintenance program employs different techniques, but the analysis of the vibration behavior of machine compo¬nents to assess their condition was found to be the most accurate technique for monitoring various machine disorders. A dragline that handles overburden in open pit mines is one of the more capital-intensive pieces of production equip¬ment. It is imperative that the machine be run at its optimum capacity under the prevailing environmental conditions. Condition monitoring of the various components of the dragline through vibration analysis not only improves the machines availability but also ensures a long operation time free from sudden failure. This paper describes the application of vibration monitor¬ing and analysis techniques to assess the components of a W2000 dragline. The paper reveals that condition monitoring through vibration analysis can be as valuable in failure prevention as it is in failure analysis. Finally, the paper presents an approach to a knowledge-based expert system to the quick and correct diagnosis of mechanical faults in a dragline. Equipment A dragline is an intermittent-discharge-type excavator having a long boom at one end. Unlike other excavators, the bucket is not rigidly held by the frame structure. In favorable geomining conditions, the intensive operation of these exca¬vators is the least-expensive means of overburden removal. The basic working elements of this equipment are the hoist system, the crowd and retract system, the wing mechanism and the propel mechanism. The walking dragline is accepted as the most economical machine for stripping overburden at depths of up to 60 m (200 ft). They are electrically powered and the various motions are effected by individual drives. The Ward-Leonard system is used to provide the optimum flexibility in controlling different dc-drive motors. To mini¬mize the cost of mineral extraction, the largest such machine in India has a 24-m3 (850-cu ft) bucket with a boom length of 96 m (315 ft). Draglines are very costly, and considerable financial penal¬ties may arise from sudden stoppages due to component fail¬ures. Thus, operational reliability is of the greatest importance. Active measures are now being taken to minimize downtime by adopting condition-based maintenance techniques. Though a number of techniques come under this scheme, it has been observed that assessing the health of the dragline by measuring vibration is the best method of determining the dynamic behavior of its various rotating components to avoid any catastrophic failure. Based on criticality, the vibration-behav¬ior of the following components are studied: • motor-generator unit, • exciter unit, • hoist motor-gearbox unit, • hoist drum-gearbox unit, • drag motor-gearbox unit, • drag drum-gearbox unit and • swing motor unit The approach Increases in the vibration levels in different subsystems of the dragline were observed due to the presence of faults such as unbalance, misalignment, looseness and bad bearings. A vibration behavior study included the measurement of vibra¬tion level, trend analysis of time-domain vibration signals and vibration frequency analysis at bearing points of the components. A vibration meter, a vibration analyzer and a data collector are used. Vibration-level measurement. When the dragline was assembled and put into operation for the first time, vibration data were collected to generate baseline data for the equip¬ment (based on International Standard ISO 2372). Mr. C. A. Hollingsworth introduced commercial column flotation to the Florida Phosphate Industry in 1976, with a six feet diameter prototype cell at the Tenoroc Mine. More than two-dozen column cells have been installed in phosphate beneficiation plants since then. The increased interest in column cells for phosphate flotation, and their potential use in new plant construction, prompted the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research to fund programs to investigate various aspects of column flotation. This report describes a test program, conducted by JACOBS at CF Industries Hardee Complex II, as part of a comprehensive research program awarded to the University of Florida by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research. The 1.5 feet diameter test column was operated with plant process water and plant reagentized flotation feed. Several variables considered for column cells design and operation were tested. Feed specific capacity, air superficial velocity, and the length to diameter ratio of the column were the variables that influenced phosphate recovery. Concentrate phosphate grade was influenced by concentrate superficial velocity and feed specific capacity.

The interdependent variables of particular interest in this paper are those associated with mine planning activities that impact metallurgical processing plant performance and costs. INTRODUCTION In ore beneficiation one of the simplest methods of mineral concentration is hand picking to remove either the ore or the waste material from a moving table or conveyor belt. Ore Sorting Equipment may be defined as equipment for mechanized picking. This type of equipment has been used successfully over the past thirty years or so to beneficiate ores of various types in particle mesh sizes between 1mm and 200mm.. at throughputs of up to 150 tonnes per hour. In general for ore sorting to be a consideration the ore and the waste material must be well liberated in the feed to the sorter (that is into practically discrete particles of ore and waste). The larger the liberation size the more likely sorting is to be cost effective. Correct selection of ore sorting equipment is most important and often special machine features are developed for an individual application. Sorter performance can be best determined by extensive testwork of representative ore at design tonnage on prototype or preferably on production model sorting machines. ADVANTAGES OF SORTING ORE The four main advantages of sorting ore are: Reduced milling cost. Reduced processing cost. Higher overall recovery. Reduced transportation costs. Reduced Milling Cost With sorters installed the milling plant following the sorter is generally smaller and hence less costly to install and operate as it only has to handle the sorter product. However this benefit is somewhat offset by the increased cost of the screening and washing plant prior to the sorter and the cost of the sorting plant itself. Reduced Processing Cost As there is less material of higher grade presented to the concentrating plant following the sorter, this plant will generally be smaller and less costly to construct and operate than a plant treating the total quantity of material. New methods for remediating metals-contaminated groundwater include in-situ emplacement of highly adsorptive substrates to permanently retard solutes. Substrates are introduced by sequential injection of soluble components that precipitate in the aquifer, forming a permanent high-retardation zone. This method overcomes the factors that limit pump-and-treat remediation; i.e, long-term source loading and slow desorption. Column tests demonstrated efficient substrate emplacement, increasing retardation coefficients of Cr(VI) by 20 and As(V) by 40. Similar effectiveness is expected for other heavy metals. Simulations using a coupled advective-geochemical model accurately matched substrate emplacement and arsenic attenuation, allowing extrapolation to other constituents and larger-scale applications.
