The underground extraction of coal is associated with ground movements extending from the mining area to the ground surface, which result in bowls of ground subsidence, with amplitude exceeding the amount of several meters and occasionally with important tilt and curvature of ground surface. Such changes at both the underground environment and surface topography lead to destruction of buildings, failure of utilities and transportation networks, and occasionally formation of areas vulnerable to flooding, or even small pools. Based on geodetic surface measurements of ground elevation changes, various theories and empirical models relating surface subsidence with the geometry of underground voids formed have been proposed, and predictions of expected subsidence in the form of contours have been estimated. In this study a case study of planning of a new highway network through areas in which coal extraction was also planned is discussed. This work is partly funded by EU. The optimum solution selected was a modification of the initial highway planning, so that the road is increased in length and by-passes the richest coal-field, where maximum post-exploitation subsidence was predicted, and only crosses either minor coalfields, which are not to be exploited, or even margins of main coalfields, in which minor post-exploitation subsidence is expected.

An attempt was made to beneficiate low-grade, high-phosphorus manganese ores of the Garividi-Garbham region of Andhra Pradesh, India, by using wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS). The distribution behavior of both mass and chemical constituents in different size fractions of a typical highly weathered ore sample was studied to obtain information about the liberation characteristics of various chemical constituents. Magnetic separation indicated that in the +208-µm size fractions, P and acid insolubles were concentrated in the magnetic fractions. However, in the -208-µm size fractions, P and acid insolubles were concentrated in the nonmagnetic fraction because of a lower recovery of the magnetic fraction. Variations in field intensity between 1.3 and 1.75 T had little effect on the recovery and the grade of concentrate. The results also demonstrated that phosphorus was associated with all three major constituent phases, namely, oxides of Mn and Fe and aluminosilicate gangue minerals.

During many strong earthquakes in the past, a significant number of tailings dams failures has been recorded, leading in some cases to human life losses. However, over the last decades, seismic design of tailings dams has drawn much attention mainly due to the high environmental hazard. Although the stability of such geostructures under dynamic loading is mainly related to their liquefaction potential, there exist several technical issues that have not been adequately investigated. One of these issues is the impact of local site conditions on the dynamic earthquake stresses developed, and therefore on the inertial instability of these dams. Based on the models examined in the first part of the present study (Stability of Tailings Dams ? Part I: Static Loading), two-dimensional numerical simulations are performed in order to examine the effects of local site conditions in the dynamic response of tailings dams. Imposing dynamic loading via characteristic pulses and real earthquake records, the most commonly used types of construction methods are studied at their final stage. Emphasis is given on the special characteristics of the ground motion, while the material nonlinearity of both soil and tailings is taken into account by an equivalent-linear procedure. The results obtained indicate that local site conditions may have a significant impact on the seismic response of a tailings dam.

Iron ore pellets use bentonite clay as binder at dosages from 0.5to 1.0% (10 to 20 pounds per ton) of moist iron ore concentrate. Bentonite is typically shipped hundreds of miles from Wyoming to the Lake Superior iron ore district. It is therefore best to know how effective a bentonite will be before it is shipped and used to bind concentrate into pellets. Current tests of bentonite effectiveness include: plate water absorption, methylene blue uptake, free swell, exchangeable cations, and glycolated layer expansion. However, these tests have many disadvantages: First, they only measure the ability of a bentonite to expand, disperse, or absorb, not how well it will bond. Second, most of the tests require up to 20 hours to perform. Bentonite only has a few minutes to interact within the concentrate before it is indurated (sintered). These long-term tests may not reflect the true behavior of bentonite. Third, the tests are tedious and often results are inconsistent between different iron ore concentrates, labs, and technicians. Fourth, some of the testing equipment is difficult to procure. Fifth, procedures are often difficult to standardize. In this paper, the Binder Effectiveness Strength (BESt) test to evaluate binders for iron ore pellets is presented that: measures the ability of bentonite to bond, requires only about two hours to complete, is simple and reproducible, and utilizes readily available equipment that has been standardized for decades.

INTRODUCTION Cross, et al. (1974), produced a retrospective study of standard setting for underground miners. This report had two distinct components; i) criteria of importance for the protection of the miners, and ii) economic considerations for standard setting. The methods for setting radiation safety standards reviewed were: dose calculations and consensus methods; epidemiology; pathology; bioassay; animal experiments; sputum cytology; chromosome aberrations; and, the Mantel-Bryan Model. By looking back, the authors intended to enable officials to look ahead in making future decisions based on reasonable conclusions. Now it may be time to consider underground miners' protection from another perspective: are there miners who may be especially susceptible to toxic environments?; and if so, are there any biomedical assays that might be indicative of exceptional sensitivities to toxic substances? The human population is genetically very heterogeneous. The data of Saccomanno, et al. (1973), reveal great variability in individual response to radon daughter exposure and only a small portion of the miner population subject to toxic inhalants develop squamous cell metaplasia (Saccomanno, et al., 1970). The majority of the miner population is either not susceptible or is resistant to the toxic agents. This information suggests the existence of a small subpopulation with increased sensitivity or reduced resistance and underscores the need for indicators from biomedical assays that might prove of value for the detection of such individuals. The heightened awareness of the contribution of pollutants in the environment for the potential induction of mutations and carcinogenesis lead to a profusion of short-term bioassays to circumvent the high cost and time-consuming large toxicity animal studies. Over 100 bioassays across taxa from microbes to man are at various stages of use or development (Hollstein, et al., 1979). Less than a dozen tests currently offer early promise for application to[ in vivo] effect studies of man. Many are still in early development, lack the sensitivity needed for a retrospective or prospective study at current permissible exposures, are impractical to conduct in the field, or are not cost effective. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the bioassays that may now, or in the near term, prove applicable for the detection of individual underground miners with increased susceptibility to toxic agents. Throughout this statement, it is assumed that any single test may give false negatives or false positives and, therefore, a tier of tests should be investigated. The possible tests are in various stages of development; some tests better proven than others with a firmer data base and, therefore, with greater probability of usefulness. Some of the less proven assays are not ruled out if they have practical or theoretical promise as indicators. Table I summarizes the assays critiqued for their potential to monitor the effects of [in vivo] exposure to genotoxic substances. POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF HIGHLY SENSITIVE MINERS Assays of Body Fluids It is desirable to have data on the agent(s) to which subjects are exposed when humans are monitored by biomedical effects. Obviously, to varying intensity, the underground mining environments are monitored for radon daughters and it is recognized that the miners are also exposed to other pollutants, most notably, uranium ore dust and diesel fumes. Further testing for the metabolites of the pollutants can be done on body fluid, urine. [High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)]: This is a very sensitive method for the detection of mutagenic metabolites in urine. The urine is treated with the enzyme sulfatase and beta-glucuronidase to permit identification of substances that are made nonmutagenic by conjugation as glucuronides. The sample is then passed through an XAD-2 resin column and the absorbed organic molecules eluted with acetone. The sample is then split and evaporated to 1 ml and used for direct chemical analysis using HPLC. One drawback to the test is the inability to measure cumulative exposure, but multiple samples can be obtained and comparison to baseline (control) and exposure samples can reveal qualitative differences as a consequence of exposure to mutagens. [The Ames/Salmonella Microbiological Assay]: The Ames/Salmonella microbiological mutagen test is the most extensively used short-term bioassay, with over 2,600 chemicals having undergone testing by this method (Hollstein, et al., 1979). The utilization of computer based monitoring systems for fire detection in underground coal mines has grown significantly in the past seven years. In 1984, an annual MSHA survey identified a total of 38 systems being used in U.S. underground coal mines, while a 1990 survey indicated the number has risen to 112. The applications for mine monitoring have also changed according to the annual surveys. From April 24 to June 21, 1990, investigations were conducted by personnel of the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, in cooperation with Coal Mine Safety and Health, concerning the installation and operation of Atmospheric Monitoring Systems in underground coal mines. These investigations were conducted to gather information concerning the ability of the AMS to detect fires and heatings, false and nuisance alarm frequencies, information related to system maintenance, and information related to employee training on system operations. This paper addresses current applications of the systems, fire and heating identification rates, application of systems in dieselized coal mines, system maintenance, and employee training requirements. While deficiencies were identified in some applications, results of the studies and survey indicate the use of atmospheric monitoring systems can be effective in identifying mine fires and heatings.

Introduction Metals exploration activity is moderately intense in the US despite the 1981-82 recession in the mining industry. Although exploration expenditures are significantly less than the 1981 peak, quality and goal orientation of current exploration are high. Major foreign and domestic mining companies as well as nonmetal companies had been attracted to invest in minerals in the US. Its capital markets, political stability, and open-door policy are attractive for hard mineral explo¬ration, particularly in the West. The approach was to either acquire fully or partially developed ore bodies through merger and acquisition, or to fund large scale exploration programs in search of bulk-tonnage deposits. The acquisition avenue has not proved the panacea envisioned for overcoming lack of substantive mineral development. Nor has the decentralized approach to exploration that was adopted proven cost-effective. The emphasis on gold, to the exclusion of all other commodities, raises questions regarding the direction of exploration in the US for the rest of the 1980s. Overview More than 300 companies are active in metals exploration in the US. These range from established, well-known domestic and foreign corporations to hurriedly incorporated, unknown companies financed by having promoted mineral prospects or occurrences of questionable quality. Junior companies tend to be oriented toward property entrepreneurship, rather than the development of minerals resources. These companies have helped maintain mineral lands from prospect to production by holding blocks of property intact during periods of exploration inactivity. This was done through promotional efforts, even though few properties that attracted major venturers proved to have real merit. Exploration objectives of senior and junior exploration companies currently embrace only a few commodities. Arranged in approximate descending order of priority, these are: precious metals; base metals in monometallic or polymetallic deposits; strategic metals, such as tungsten, tantalum, and tin; unconventional commodities, such as diamonds; ferrous metals; and commodities such as beryl, zeolites, and barite. Prospectors are important in searching for these targets. In the US, where they have been financed by major and junior companies, prospectors have proven a useful and low-cost means of locating gold prospects (e.g. the Alligator Ridge property in Nevada). The tenacity and persistence of independent prospectors have been factors in discovering properties rejected or overlooked by professional geologists (e.g. Lornex mine in British Columbia). This has been realized by the provincial government that grubstakes bona fide prospectors. Exploration interest in commodities has always been cyclic with price. Gold is one of the few metals that has experienced a price increase of such magnitude to warrant attention. The potential for realizing adequate operating margins for the Nevada open-pit "no-see-um" gold deposits is great. The present declining gold price, however, may indicate that this emphasis on gold, to the exclusion of other commodities, is shortsighted. Mining companies have been the last to react to price increases, opening new mines based on unrealistic market expectations. A scenario could develop where plummeting gold prices bring recession to the gold industry, as lately occurred in uranium, molybdenum, and copper. One advantage of kriging is that it provides both an estimate of the block or point grade, and an indication of the local precision via the kriging variance. If one assumes that the estimation errors are normally distributed, then confidence intervals for the grades can be calculated. But in mining, grades are rarely normally distributed; in general, they are skew. This is particularly true for precious metals. In this paper we study confidence intervals for variables with non-normal distributions. Using a non linear geostatistical technique, the grades are transformed into their normally distributed equivalents. Confidence intervals are obtained for these normal variables, and back transformed to give the corresponding confidence intervals for the grades, for either points or blocks. This approach is applied to gold data from the Witwatersrand basin in South Africa.

This paper summarizes results from an investigation into possibly the largest coal pillar failure in the USA. The newly opened coal mine worked an 3.35 m (11 ft) seam under overburden depth that ranged from 91 to 671m (300 to 2200 ft) . The mine main entries, and the enclosed pillars, experienced a massive slow squeeze. The squeeze could not be controlled and the mains were lost. A new set of mains were driven. Entry convergence (closure) measurements were carried out behind the advancing face to monitor stability. Pillar stresses were also measured under four different depths of overburden: 229.433, 472.579 m (750,1420,1550, and 1900 ft). The strength of pillars in the new mains was calculated from the loads that triggered the failure in the old mains, using three pillar strength formulas. The stress measurements showed that the new pillars supported more load than their predicted strength, indicating that current strength formulas are inadequate under deep conditions.

The Churchill Falls Development will eventually be the largest source of hydroelectric power in North America. Churchill Falls was discovered in 1839, but until recent years it was not practical to begin development of this site to tap the 7 million horsepower available. This $1 billion project is located in Labrador, 700 miles northeast of Montreal and 650 miles northwest of St. Johns, Nfld. The construction will divert the Churchill River 5 miles upstream from the 245 foot Churchill Falls. Rapids above and below the Falls, together with the Falls proper, give a natural head of 1,040 feet. In contrast to the basic simplicity of the surface installations, the powerhouse labyrinth is astounding in size and complexity. The largest in the world, it consists of three major chambers - the powerhouse, 972 feet long by 81 feet wide and 154 feet high; the surge chamber, 763 feet long, 40 feet to 64 feet wide and 148 feet high; and the transformer gallery, 856 feet long by 50 feet wide and 39 feet high. Pretreatment of sulfidic refractory gold ore by biooxidation in coarse-crushed ore heaps is a promising new technology, especially for low-grade ores that cannot afford pressure leaching or roasting. An algebraic equation for determining the economically optimum biooxidation of the sulfide minerals in the ore is provided that is based on the empirical biooxidation rate constant for the ore, the project's financial discount rate, the ore grades of both refractory and non-refractory gold, and the gold price. Then, the economically optimum duration of bioheap pretreatment, t$, is determined from its logarithmic relation to the optimum fractional extent of ore biooxidation, F$, through the ore's biooxidation rate constant. In doing so, it is assumed that the ore is adequately crushed and amenable to bioheap pretreatment and that the cumulative oxidation of the ore with time is known from ore testing so that the rate constant can be determined.

During-all phases of exploration limited resources must be allocated among exploration methods and among exploration prospects. This problem,, an exercise in optimization, can be treated mathematically. For three objective functions - maximizing return, return to cost and return minus weighted cost - theoretical results exist which enable the exploration planner not only to gain valuable insight into the problem, but also to estimate the resources necessary and to allocate these resources for' at least-two stages of exploration prior to initial field work. A two-stage exploration strategy for volcanogenic-sedimentary iron in northern Egypt illustrates, how the results can be used. Stage 1 consists of an aeromagnetic survey to map the structure of five areas;" stage 2 consists of field reconnaissance work. For the three objectives, lower bounds are calculated as a function of exploration expenditures for each stage in order to facilitate the choice of an-optimal exploration budget. Nomograms are then presented which, based on the Kuhn-Tucker Conditions', enable the incremental allocation of airborne and reconnaissance effort among the five areas.

INTRODUCTION Volcanic tuffs on and adjacent to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) are being considered by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the possible geo- logic disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) project was established in 1977 to evaluate such disposal. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), one of the participants in the NNWSI project, has as one of its responsibilities the development of a rock mechanics program for the Nevada site. SNL conducted three small-diameter heater experiments in welded and nonwelded tuffs in G-Tunnel on the NTS, to investigate the thermal (heat transfer) and hydrothermal (thermal- induced water migration) behavior as part of the rock mechanics program. These two aspects were investigated to increase knowledge about the behavior of tuff so that predictive capabilities are available for use by repository designers, waste-package designers, and performance analysts. Also, knowledge of the behavior of the tuff is invaluable for planning and designing future in situ experiments at Yucca Mountain, the candidate site for the repository. The evaluations of these three experiments is the subject of this paper. Designers, analysts, and experimenters are seeking a better understanding of the behavior of tuffs under the influence of thermal loads expected from radioactive-waste storage, because of two physical features peculiar to tuffs. First, tuffs are inherently porous because of the manner in which they are deposited (Smith, 1960). Tuffs utilized in G-Tunnel testing have porosities ranging from 15 to 46%, which cover the ranges of expected porosities in the target horizon at Yucca Mountain. It has been established that the G-Tunnel tuffs have similar bulk, thermal, and mechanical material properties to those at Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984), thus, G-Tunnel testing can be used to evaluate the effects of porosity on the thermal and mechanical behavior. The second feature is that tuffs above the water table contain pore water that influences the thermal properties of the rock; displacement of the water must be accounted for in repository designs and analyses. For example, G-Tunnel tuffs, located some 600 m above the static water level, have saturations in excess of 60%. Similar percentages are expected at the target horizon in Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984). The presence of and the removal of the pore water affects the thermal behavior of the tuffs, and these three experiments were designed first to determine the phenomenological behavior and then assess influences on predictive capabilities. The focus in this paper is to present the results and evaluations of the experiments as they apply to improving predictive capabilities. The thermal aspects are emphasized by comparing the measured temperatures (in and around heater emplacement holes) with calculations of predicted temperatures using numerical models, so that the effects of significant parameters can be evaluated and integrated into future predictive models. Observation of the hydrothermal aspects is needed to assess the effects of loss of pore water and subsequent migrations on the temperature fields during the heating, and also to define the expected environment in the vicinity of the outer metallic surface around the waste. The metallic boundary can be either the outer shell of the waste package system, which is the main engineered barrier for waste containment, or the borehole liner. A final decision has not been made as yet about the necessity for lining boreholes; thus, the emphasis is on predicting the characteristics of the environment around the outer metallic surface. Barite deposits located in Dinek and surrounding region have important economic features with their large reserve capacity for Turkey. The objective of this study is to elucidate geological and depositional characteristics in terms of. site investigation and chemical analysis. In order to do this, geological area of about 300 km2 was examined and detailed geological map was constructed. It was observed that Barite mineralization in these deposits was occurred in carbonate and pelitic rocks of Lower Cambrian-Lower Ordovician. Deposits were exposed to advanced diagenesis regional metamorphism and tectonics that rotated and deformed the barites; therefore, barites shows secondary veins, brecciate and fracturing structure. Even though, a few light isotope values of barites may suggest hydrothermal and exhalative sedimentary characteristics or possible mixing with magmatic fluids, generally heavy isotope values indicate that the sulfate ions were supplied from coeval seawater and, many of sedimentary features and petrological, geochemical characters support dominantly sedimentary origin.

Conventional mine safety wisdom states that "the most efficient mines are also the safest." Since the 1980s, small mines (and contractors) have been targeted as the most dangerous because of their fatality records. However, statistical analysis of West Virginia safety and production data from 1993 indicated that, when considering the correlation between accident severity and tons mined per employee-hour worked, the most efficient mines were, with the exception of very small mines, not the safest operations. This paper presents the results of an extended analysis of West Virginia mine safety using 1993 and 1996 data and concludes with the method used to suggest current priorities for focusing interventions.

The Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is a partnership of Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corp. Since the summer of 1990, SMC has operated a precious metals smelter at Columbus, MT for further upgrading of concentrates from its platinum-palladium mine. The facility's gas-cleaning system utilizes "oxidation/dilute-mode," dual-alkali scrubbing technology to capture sulfur oxide gases from the process gas streams. This paper describes the rationale for selecting the dilute-mode, dual-alkali system and summarizes the design parameters. Also discussed are the startup problems encountered and their solutions.

The current US national commitment to expanding the human presence into the solar system will clearly require major facilities in Earth orbit or possibly on the Moon. Such facilities will need large amounts of materials for structural modules, life support, propulsion and shielding. The heavy transportation costs in fuel required to lift materials from the Earth's surface make a terrestrial-based space system inherently inefficient. A more cost-effective approach would be to provide as much of the required materials as possible from other bodies in space not having the high cost of Earth launch. This paper identifies potential targets for space-based resource utilization, constraints on exploitation and relative benefits of various sources.
