A system for the monitoring of micrcoseismic events. which is designed for use in feasibility studies of rock-burst prediction, has been operating at Western Deep levels Limited since 1977. Analyses have revealed that the presence and Orientation of geological discontinuities ahead of the mine face can be predicted from the data produced by this system.

The mechanism of the flow of tailings slurry is examined, and a mathematical model is derived to describe the flow. Predictions based on the model are then compared with the flow that actually occurred near the shaft at Bafokeng after the No. I tailings dam had failed. The predictions are found to be of acceptable accuracy.

Gerhardus Paulus Badenhorst passed away on 2nd December, 1989. Badie, as he was known to all, will be missed by his many friends and colleagues, and will be remembered by al who knew him as a warm-hearted person who was totally dedicated to the safety and health of the workers in the mining industry.

The effect of varying aliphatic, olefinic, and aromatic groups in the N- and S-positions of dithiocarbamates was investigated in the selective and bulk flotation of a mixed copper-lead-zinc-iron ore. Selective and bulk flotation were found to be dependent on the type of functional group, as well as on the position of substitution.

The substitution of functional groups in covalent trithiocarbonate collector molecules influences the selective and non-selective bonding of collector molecules to mineral surfaces, as well as flotation efficiency in a mixed sulphide ore. These effects were concluded to be related to the metal-sulphide solubility products and electron densities on the sulphur atoms in the collector

This technical note reviews the status quo of mud rushes and flooding, which have claimed them lives of many people in underground mines in South Africa and globally. Given that the causes are well known and can be managed, the note calls for the development of a national and global standard on flood and mud rush prevention in order to save lives.

It is interesting to note that, when the Technical Programme Committee-Mining first decided on this particular topic for a colloquium, the proposed title was different in that it used the words 'rising price of gold'. The very fact that the title was reworded to use the words 'fluctuating gold price' highlights the problem that faces the South African gold-mining industry.

There are certain ores that can be treated without upgrading (e.g., gold and uranium ores), and upgrading needs to be considered only for fairly low-grade ores of this type. If the grade is very low, treatment will not be economic even with upgrading, and there is therefore a limited range of ore grades for which upgrading is suitable.

A diamond-drilling programme conducted from 1971 to 1973 by the Phelps Dodge Corporation revealed three complex sulphide ore-bodies in the highly folded Namaqualand mobile belt on the farm Aggeneys, some 65 km west of the small town of Pofadder on the road to Springbok in the northwestern Cape. Of these, the Broken Hill occurrence is the most promising.

The authors and Iscor's management are to be congratulated on an interesting and detailed paper that discloses Iscor's philosophy, strategy, and action concerning what can also be termed productivity improvement. Aside from the pioneering work of Beeforth and Dicks regarding Dynamic Profitability Analysis at Vaal Reefs, there appears to be a shortage of papers on this topic from the mining groups.

Mr R.D. Beck attended Felsted School in Essex (England) and the Royal School of Mines, University of London, where he ob¬tained the degree of B.Sc.(Eng.), A.R.S.M. in mineral technology in 1969. His other qualifications include Pr.Eng. (1976), C.Eng (1975), and M.I.M.M. (1975). He joined Gold Fields of South Africa in December 1969, and worked at Doornfontein Gold Mine, Greenside Colliery, West Driefontein Gold Mine, Zwartkloof Fluorspar, Gold Fields Laboratories, Gold Fields Head Office, Libanon Gold Mine, and Kloof Gold Mine before being appointed Plant Superintendent at East Driefontein Gold Mine in January 1973. In June 1976, he was transferred to Head Office as Group Metallurgist, followed, in November 1978, by his secondment to Black Mountain Mineral Development Company as Plant Superintendent, to take on-site responsibilities for staff training, plant commissioning, and start up. On his return to Head Office in July 1980 as Assistant Consulting Metallurgist, he was responsible for Black Mountain and new metallurgical projects. Then, in January 1984, he was appointed General Manager of the Zinc Corporation of South Africa Limited. He became a member of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1973.

The production of electrolytic manganese in South Africa by M. HARRIS, Pr. Eng., B.Se. (Eng.) (Fellow), D. M. MEYER, Pr. Eng., B.Se. (Meeh. Eng.) (Visitor), and K. AUERSWALD (Visitor) The decision to construct the first electrolytic manganese plant in South Africa was important and farreaching. After evaluating the results of the pilot plant operation, the first South African producer, Electrolytic Metal Corporation (Emcor), established a plant in Krugersdorp. Initially, there were many process problems that had to be InvestIgated, and, after these had been solved and many operating parameters had been established, manganese was successfully produced. When the Delta Manganese plant in Nelspruit was planned, cognizance was taken of the fact that, if peak efficiencies were to be maintained, the process must be operated between fairly narrow parameters. Instrumentation was therefore installed to control the process automatically wherever possible. The main features of the Delta Manganese operation are outlined, with a brief description of each stage of the process from ore milling through to electrowinning and packing of the metal. It is concluded that much benefit can be obtained from further research work into process improvements and into the exact effect of certain variables on plant and current efficiency.

Underground mining and particularly dipping narrow tabular orebodies are difficult to mechanize appropriately, given the low gold price and other external factors. Particularly in the deep level mines in South Africa, there is little choice left but to mechanize if the industry is to remain competitive and a significant global player. This paper presents a design philosophy for appropriate mechanization intended to generate solutions that can be implemented using the people currently employed in South Africa mines. The design philosophy is based on the ability of high-pressure water (hydropower technology) to deliver enhanced performance to users and on simplicity in the eyes of the user. Four examples of systems and equipment are described to illustrate the approach to Appropriate Mechanization. These include: • The Development End System, • The Monorail Raise Climber, • Automatic Pump Control Valves, and • The Energy Recovery Pump. The equipment is presented with the following critical issues foremost in mind: Safety, Working Environment, Performance, Cost effectiveness and Implementation. Although the appropriate mechanization approach is described in the context of the South African underground mining industry, much of the Appropriate Mechanization equipment has worldwide applications. Trackless mining at LKAB, Sweden by L HERMANSSON (Visitor) Because the usual means of transporting men and material to the working sites was time-wasting and uneconomical, inclined subways were installed in the Kiirunavaara Mine that permitted the access of rubber-wheeled vehicles to all underground working sites. Men and material could now be transported direct to the working site with no reloading. An increase of 8 to 12 per cent in underground productivity has been obtained by the use of this new transportation system. Rubber-wheeled vehicles are also used in development, production drilling, and loading. In December 1958, the management of the Luossavaara Mine decided to cut the costs of waste-rock haulage. The system of waste transport was the conventional one of shuttle car, rail haulage, and skip hoisting. After consideration of other methods, it was decided to re-equip the mine completely for a system of trackless transport. Results show that mining costs per ton of ore were reduced by 27 per cent, and mining costs per ton of waste were reduced by a spectacular 80 per cent. The new system has proved to be more flexible, and ore grading has been simplified since there is no longer any mixing in ore passes and chutes.

The Centenary Distinguished Lecture was held on Thursday, 24th March, 1994 at the Convention Centre of the Sandton Sun, Johannesburg at 20:00. Herewith the proceedings that followed. P.R. Janisch: The South African Institute of Mining and Metalurgy began life one hundred years ago tonight, and eight years (almost to the day) after the 1886 discovery of gold, which has impacted so profoundly on the course of events in our country since then. The Early Years That discovery was a mater of fortune, but not in the sense of the conventional prospector's lucky strike. Canny explorers, such as the Strubens, had been around for some years and, if George Harrison had not stumbled over the Main Reef when he did, someone else would surely have done so within months. The element of luck was that the gold-bearing rocks of the Witwatersrand actually lay exposed to sight. We now know that they are something of the order of 2,5 billion years old. Rocks of that age are usually covered by younger formations. In fact, the bulk of the Witwatersrand Basin is covered by lava, dolomite, and Karoo measures. What, one wonders, would our history have been had the Karoo, which stops at the Vaal, extended no more than 60 kilometres further north. Dr H. Scot-Russell A piece of advice attributed to Paul Kruger, the who was President of the South African Republic one hundred years ago, was the following: 'Seek from the past that which is good, and build on it for the future'. It is advice that can be applied universally and, whether deliberately or not, it must have motivated my predecessors when this Institute celebrated its 40th, 50th, and 75th birthdays. Those milestones were each marked by retrospectives, as Peter Janisch has so ably presented tonight on our hundredth anniversary. The parallels do not end there. We find ourselves in times no less daunting than those our predecessors. Next month will see the birth of a new kind of South Africa; so did May 1902, May 1919, and May 1948.
