Introduction Zircon is a natural occurring mineral and may exhibit natural low level radioactivity. It contains trace levels (90 to120 pCi/g and 110 to 115 pCi/g respectively or 3.3 to 4.4Bq/g and 4.1 to 4.3 Bq/g) of naturally occurring radioactive uranium and thorium. This mineral is often found in a suiteof minerals (rutile, ilmenite and monazite) Due to the overlap in physical properties of monazite (containing 4–7% thorium) with some of the zircon (slight magnetic susceptibility) it often contaminates the zircon, adding to the levels of thorium in the product. Hazards associated with the products from zircon and its processing is inhalation of respirable dust (generated by milling) containing radioactive uranium and thorium which may cause cancer of the lungs. Legislature regulates the transport, use, workplace environment exposure and storage of radioactive material. In America the general regulation for the unlicensed use of low levels of radioactive materials limits the concentration to 500 ppm (U plus Th). Europe (IAEA) specifies a limit of10 Bg/g (Bequerels per gram) on the parents for transport only which is a higher level of U+Th. Companies selling into these markets need to comply with these regulations and certification is therefore required, not only of the major constituents determining the price, but of the U and Th levels as well. Exceeding the limits for U and Th may result in material being returned to the country of origin. However, for the analyst the requirement is to analyse for these elements throughout the production process as well as the analysis of the ‘tails’ that is returned to the mine area. This requires a wide range of concentration to be analysed. Methods of analysis A wide variety of methods exist for the analysis of U and Th in a range of matrices. (Table I) All these methods have been used with varying degrees of success in terms of accuracy. Overall precision for the different techniques varies from 5 to 25% relative. Time to produce results from these methods vary from a few minutes to several days. The Production Chemist is expected to produce between5 and 10 analyses per hour for process control purposes. A suitable technique that fits this requirement is X-Ray Fluorescence. Both Wavelength Dispersive (WDXRF) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) instruments are suitable. X-Ray analysis in general has a few major advantages over competitive techniques. •It is fairly simple to set up and interferences are known and easy to correct •It has multi-element analysis capabilities •Clean spectral lines for U and Th (in zircon specifically) •Uncomplicated and easy to measure background •Low detection limits (3 to 5 ppm) •A very high degree of precision •Sample preparation is uncomplicated and fast (pressed powders and fused beads). In Zircon (ZrSiO4) processed sands the matrix is constant(>99% ZrSiO4) and the background is thus essentially constant. Standards As with any other comparative technique XRF analysis relies heavily on the quality of the standards used. Assuming proper set-up and operation of the instrumentation as well as consistent sample preparation, accuracy is determined by the quality of the initial calibration standards. Bauxite residue known as red mud (RM) is a by-product produced in massive quantities during alumina production by the Bayer process with a utilisation rate of less than 5%. A large amount of RM accumulated and produced continuously has had a seriously adverse impact on the surrounding ecological environment. The application of RM in building materials is considered to be the most effective and thorough way to make RM harmless and recycle resources for the reason that adding RM to concrete as a mineral admixture could not only consume a lot of RM, but also save cement and other energy-consuming industrial products. In this paper, the adaptability to cement and aggregate of RM was studied. The results showed that the compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete using ordinary Portland cement, slag Portland cement or fly ash Portland cement as cementing material showed different trends with the increase of the amount of RM. The influence rules of RM on the compressive strength of Portland cement, slag Portland cement and fly ash Portland cement concrete were similar, whether for silicate aggregate or carbonate aggregate. RM has a negative correlation to the flexural strength of silicate aggregate-ordinary Portland cement concrete, but a positive correlation to silicate aggregate-slag Portland cement, silicate aggregate-fly ash Portland Cement. RM promoted the formation of calcium carbonate crystals and inhibited the formation of ettringite and calcium hydroxide crystals in the matrix while ordinary Portland cement, Portland cement and fly ash Portland cement were used as cementing materials. This study provided support for the use of RM in concrete, the reduction of solid waste storage, and the saving of high energy consumption cement as well. "The casthouse floor has always been one of the most dangerous working places on a blast furnace or a ferro-alloy/nonferrous furnace. Apart from working in an atmosphere including toxic gases, fumes, and dust, the workers have to perform hard and heavy manual work close to runners and ladles filled with hot liquid metal and slag.Before the invention and installation of tapping equipment the tap-holes were opened and closed manually. Opening was done by means of steel bars and sledgehammers, whereas the tap-hole was closed by repeatedly ramming small amounts of clay or refractory material into the tap-hole, again with the help of long, heavy bars. In addition, on blast furnaces the blast had to be stopped, since it was impossible to close the tap-hole properly against the blast furnace pressure. This stoppage of the blast resulted in regular losses of production. Around 1900 a major change in technology occurred. Samuel W. Vaughen, superintendent of the blast furnace department of the Cambria Iron company at Johnstown, Pennsylvania (USA), invented the first clay gun in 1895 (Wiley, 1896) (Figure 1)."

The anisotropic behaviour of “Athens Schist” has been brought out through the testing of specimens with varying orientation of schistosity with respect to the major principal stress under uniaxial, triaxial and dynamic conditions. A large number of results from tests on intact rock specimens of the “Athens Schist” were statistically analysed and evaluated. Le comportement anisotropique des roches du système “Schistes d’ Athènes” a été déterminé sur des épreuves avec une orientation différente de la schistosité par rapport à l’axe de chargement sous des conditions axiales, triaxiales et dynamiques. Un grand nombre des résultats a été statistiquement analysé et discuté. Zur Bestimmung der anisotropen Eigenschaften der Athen Schiefer wurden einaxialen, dreiaxialen und dynamischen Kompressionsversuchen an Gesteinskernen durchgeführt, bei denen die Belastungsachse verschiedenen Neigungen gegen die Schieferung hat. Die Messreihen an anisotropen unzerreissbaren Fels Samplen von Athen Schiefer wurden statistisch analysiert.

This paper describes mining industry funded research that is being undertaken to address the critical gaps and uncertainties in our knowledge so that we can develop new approaches and create more effective ways for predicting the reliability of rock slopes in large open pit mines. It is envisaged that this research will not only lead to more effective pit slope design but further reduce the potential for unforseen geotechnical risks by enabling the geotechnician to communicate the risks more effectively with management and to optimise site specific control measures. To achieve this, several research tasks are in hand. The first is to accurately represent the structured rock mass with a 3D computer model (Siromodel) that creates polyhedral blocks from structural distribution data characterised by position, orientation and persistence. Siromodel is being coupled with particle flow and other numerical codes to evaluate how the structured rock mass deforms in the stress environment of an open pit and how a candidate failure surface may propagate through the dilating rock mass along the path of the least shear and/or tension resistance. A beta version of the Siromodel software has been distributed to 20 Sponsor mine sites for technical evaluation. The end state is to develop methods of analysis that characterise the reliability of a described candidate surface, and the probability of the candidate surface propagating to failure, recognising that the rock mass strength may well be defined in a different way than before.

Insurers are hesitant to provide coverage for Open cast Pit side wall collapse, and even the consequent damage to plant and equipment in the pit as well as the resulting interference with the mining operations. After a general introduction to relevant principles of insurance, this paper addresses some of the major reasons for that reluctance based upon the authors? extensive claims experience, examines what limited coverage can still be obtained and looks to the future possibilities. Confidentiality of sources and examples referred to in this presentation is a natural imperative so that a bibliography is not provided but reference is made to relevant sample insurance policy wordings.

"The complete and successful closure of a mine in the South African environment remains problematic. Closure remains an elusive mining phase due to unclear roles and responsibilities, inaccurate closure management data, and the inability of stakeholders to conceptualize and integrate closure information into business processes. Currently there are no proven methods available to address the complexities encountered during a closure application, and to date no mine has been granted full closure. Many mines are left abandoned and unrehabilitated, resulting in risk to investors, surrounding communities, and regulators. This investigation aimed to determine, categorize, and rank reasons for unsuccessful mine closures. Focus groups consisting of public and private stakeholders were identified and surveyed through a structured, rank-order questionnaire to determine the relative importance of reasons why achieving formal and final mine closure remains elusive. Various requirements and aspects were identified and listed according to four categories: namely, primary, secondary, process drivers, and information sources. These aspects should be considered in the development of an integrated mine closure model.Background and rationalePrior to 1956, mine closures were not subject to legislative requirements, being merely governed by insufficient environmental regulations under the Mines and Works Act 27 (MWA) (Swart, 2003). In 1981 the Chamber of Mines (COM) published a document titled ‘The rehabilitation of land disturbed by surface coal mining’, which constituted the first notable contribution to environmental protection. This guideline was later referenced in the Minerals Act of 1991, which for the first time laid definite environmental burdens on the Mining Right Holder (MRH). The Minerals Act of 1991 was superseded by the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) and the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act Regulations (MPRDAR), which specify a regulatory process for mine closure applications and financial provisions."

In extracting base metals from ore bodies, sulphide as well as oxide, the main environmental concern is sulphur, whether in the form of sulphurous gases or sulphate in liquid form. Generally sulphur is in over supply in developed countries mainly because of strict legislation to capture it. In developing countries on the other hand there is usually a shortage of sulphur because of less strict environmental legislation. Africa falls in this second category and the African continent imports substantial amounts of sulphur despite the fact that large quantities of sulphur is emitted by smelters, thermal power stations, coal mines, fertilizer manufacturers and others. Other than making acid from gaseous emissions, existing methods to capture sulphur from gaseous and liquid effluents are uneconomical and it ends up in the environment either as ammonium sulphate (from gaseous effluents) or as gypsum (from liquid effluents). The CSIR?s Environmentek and Pyroserv has developed a process whereby gaseous sulphur emissions and sulphates in liquid effluents can be economically captured and converted into elemental sulphur and metal carbonates. The elemental sulphur is of high purity as it is precipitated from a gas stream and is readily marketable. The metal carbonates (barium or calcium) can be recycled back to the process or marketed. The only harmful byproduct of the process is carbon dioxide. Should natural gas or methane be available the carbon dioxide could be reduced by about one third. Should solar, wind or hydro energy be available to generate hydrogen the carbon dioxide emissions would be zero. Employing this technology could make Africa independent of sulphur imports and furthermore reduce the impact of acid rain and seepage of sulfate from gypsum and other waste dumps into the environment.

The effect of flotation operational parameters on froth stability and froth recovery was studied. Froth stability was measured using a special column. To determine the froth recovery, the froth height change model and froth height exponential model were used. It was found that since the interactions between the pulp and froth zones affect the time of froth formation, the exponential model is more suitable than the froth height change method for determining the froth recovery. The results showed that superficial air velocity and collector dosage have, respectively, the highest and lowest effect on the froth recovery, while froth recovery decreases sharply with increasing froth height.

Pipe pigging is a technique for the in situ (field) coating application, to create a seamless internal anti-corrosive lining of long pipelines. The technology originated in the cleaning of pipes, and these proven cleaning methods continue to be used today. Firstly mechanical cleaning of the pipeline is performed, using wire brush, razor back, course stud and fine wire pigs, then foam pigs, or criss cross pigs, and urethane blade scrapers to remove loose debris, wax, residual hydrocarbons and corrosion products from the pipeline. Part of the proprietary techniques and expertise is to ensure that these cleaning pigs do not get stuck Next chemical cleaning of the pipeline is performed, using repeated pig runs with detergents, solvents, acid etching, corrosion inhibitors, consecutively batched between two pigs, to ensure a clean, dry metal finish to a visual cleanliness standard of ISO SA2½. These in situ techniques were developed, 40 years ago to apply internal corrosion protection to pipes using a thin layer of epoxy based paint (50 to 100 micron). Until recently these old techniques were never improved upon. Although many thousands of kilometres of pipes were successfully coated with these thin film epoxy based paints and old application techniques, these thin paint films had problems in weld coverage, and were also unable to fill pits caused by pitting corrosion, and unable to replace metal loss caused by channel erosion. New coating material developments, revised application methods and modified pigging equipment have now made it possible to apply thick film coatings as corrosion barriers to the internals of pipes in the field, using these pigging techniques. The thick coating films can be up to 1 mm (40 mils) thick in a single coating run over long distances. The new thick film coating materials and application techniques are similar to continuous screeding, creating a far more robust seamless internal pipe lining when compared to the old technology of thin film paints. With thick film polymers the option now exists to create a structural GRP pipe within a pipe, be it steel or cementicious. It has been preferable, even necessary, to move away from the traditional epoxy paints and coatings. It was found difficult or impossible to use epoxy materials for these pipe coating applications due to the requirement for achieving a suitable viscosity with adequate hold up. In order to reduce epoxy viscosity a solvent or reactive diluent is required. This inevitably lead to solvent entrapment and poor cure characteristics in cold climates. Further mud cracking in over thick areas, the inability to extend or reduce pot life, poor control of cure time and limited resistance to aggressive or chemical environments made solvent based epoxy resins a poor choice.

High pressure grinding technology has gained further interest in various industries. So far in the mining industry, machines are in operation in diamond mines and iron ore applications. In gold and copper ore processing, test work has been conducted showing considerable operational and process benefits. Similar benefits can be expected from HPGR applications in the platinum industry due to the preferred ore breakage along grain boundaries, thus liberating the PGE particles. This paper will provide an update on the state of high pressure grinding roll technology. Developments in the design of high pressure grinding rolls, for minimized maintenance requirements and availability just as high as conventional mills, will be presented. Plant flow sheets and concepts will be discussed, which allow for a reduction of capital and operating cost in comparison to existing two-stage milling circuits.

This Spotlight gives a brief summary of the proposed 1991 tax amendments of relevance to mines and mining houses. It should be read together with the author's article South African mining tax in the 1990's', which appeared in the August 1990 issue of this Journal. A number of tax amendments of relevance to the mining industry were proposed by the Minister of Finance in his March 1991 budget speech. In addition, certain other measures that may be implemented were set out in the budget review document released at the same time. A word of caution is necessary: these measures will become law only if and when they are enacted in the appropriate legislation. When this legislation is tabled in June, it may not contain all of the measures discussed below, some of the measures may appear in modified form, and other measures not discussed at the time of the budget may well appear. Unless otherwise stated, the 1991 tax amendments will affect companies with years of assessment ending in the twelve-month period to 31st March, 1992.

Abstract: Triaxial tests were conducted on the schist specimens with various anisotropic angles under confining pressures of 0, 7 and 15 MPa, and axial stress-axial strains, were measured and plotted for various conditions. The results obtained reveal the effects of schistose on the strength and deformability of the rock very clearly. Peak strength of the specimens for 00 and 900 schistose orientations are nearly the same. Modulus of elasticity of this rock varies with anisotropic angle. For 0 orientation modulus of elasticity increases to a maximum. Confining pressure increases the peak strength and improves the rock deformability. However, this effect is not the same for various orientations, and there are no similar trends for each anisotropy direction. Analysis of the results shows that consideration of a linear failure criterion such as Mohr-Coulomb is appropriate for the prediction of rock behaviour up to 10 MPa, rather than a non-linear one. The analysis also reveals that the friction angle and cohesion are affected by the anisotropy orientation, and this effect is more important for the cohesion than the friction angles. Cette analyse aussi montre que l angle de frottement et cohsion est en relation de la direction no–isotrop, et cette effet est olus important pour le cohsion par a port de l angle de frottement . Analyse der Ergebnisse zeigt jener Überlegung Kriterium eines linearen Ausfalls wie zum Beispiel Mohr Coulomb passend für die Voraussage von Felsen Verhalten bis zu 10 MPa, anstatt eines nicht linear ist. Die Analyse offenbart auch, daß der Reibung Winkel und Bindekraft werden beeinflußt von der anisotropic Orientierung, und diese Wirkung wichtiger für die Bindekraft ist, als der Reibung Winkel

Reviewer: R. H. Eric This edition is organized in twenty-three chapters, and contains exactly 500 pages including three appendices and an index. The first and second editions were published in 1976 and 1980 respectively, and both contained nineteen chapters. The second edition brought the operating data and process descriptions up to date. The third edition covers comprehensively the changes that have taken place in the primary copper industry over the past two decades. For example, reverberatory furnaces now make up only a third of the major primary smelting furnaces, compared with about three-quarters in the 1970s. Control of air and water pollution and recycling are given much more emphasis, along with novel and emerging technologies.

Most processing plants use automatic samplers to extract ore aliquots along a producing shift. These aliquots are combined into a sample normally sent to lab analysis. The sampler used in the extraction of an aliquot from a continuous flow of ore, i.e. a belt conveyor is required to be both precise and accurate. Surprisingly, not all commercial automatic samplers exhibit these two mandatory properties. Consequently, it is recommended the development of a procedure able to check sample assays reproducibility obtained using a given sampling protocol. This paper uses the Gy’s sampling theory to evaluate coal quality control practices at a washing plant using an automatic sampler extracting coal increments from the ROM feeding belt conveyor. Gy’s theory provides the means to establish the precision limits for a given sampling protocol. Various ore properties are required to be determined in combination with sample mass and mass of the lot sampled. All this information leads to the definition of the precision limit. The precision limit obtained was checked via an experiment mimicking what happens in situations where both miner and consumer use the same and appropriate sampling practices. The experiment demonstrates that sampling theory precision limits were valid if unbiased samplers are used by both parties, i.e. miner and consumer. Keywords: sampling, quality control, coal
