Pictured on these pages are the eight RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1989-1990 year followed by a brief profile. All winners, except Emmet Roache from New Mexico, were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Steamboat Springs, Colorado to receive recognition at the Welcome Session Monday, June 25, 1990. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Dr. Donald Gentry, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $750 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and are recommended by their university. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the state involved. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursuing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in the engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. Through annual donations of $100 or more, the Patrons of the Institute fund the scholarship program, and the various vice presidents contribute the travel expenses to conventions for these outstanding young collegiates. Donations to this worthwhile program may be made payable to RMCMI Scholarship and mailed to the RMCMI Office, 3000 Youngfield Street, Suite 324, Lakewood, CO 80215. Profiles of the 1990 Scholarship Winners follow. [ ] Mildred Benally University of Arizona Tuscan, Arizona Mildred has attended San Juan College in New Mexico, and will graduate from the University of Arizona in May, 1991. Upon completion of her, schooling she hopes to pursue a career in the coal mining industry. In preparation for her goal, her work experience includes being a lab technician, a mining engineer intern, and a lab technician assistant; she also is very skilled in various computer applications. She has been a member of SME-AIME, and secretary to the U of A Student Chapter, and recipient of the SME Coal Division Scholarship and past recipient of the Navajo Tribal Scholarship. [ ] Joshua Olmsted Colorado School of Mines Golden, Colorado Josh is a sophomore majoring in mining engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. He is an outstanding student as well as an accomplished athlete. Josh was on the Academic Honor Roll 1988-1989 and has been awarded an athletic scholarship. He plays varsity soccer and intramural basketball.

In the current issue of Link-Belt News is this quotation: "Advancing waves of other people's progress sweep over the unchanging man and wash him out." As we look over the industrial world today we are struck by the many waves which are sweeping over backward industries. Mergers are being consummated in all lines of endeavor. General Motors are making radios and the Bendix Brake Company are making airplanes. Railroads which twenty years ago were called to account by the Federal Government for their efforts to form combinations are today being ordered to combine. But what is of immediate concern to the coal industry is the fact that there is now in existence or in project a total of 3,641 miles of pipe lines to carry natural gas to most of the country's industrial centers. This is the wave of progress which is sweeping toward you and me. If we are to grasp the significance of these many changes, we must widen our vision so that we may learn some- thing from 'the other fellow's experience. The first lesson is that cost of production alone is not a measure of profit. It is an interesting fact that the production of an article represents a definite loss until that article has been sold for a price in excess of its total cost, and the money is in the hands of the producer. If this is true, then the selling price is more important than the production cost.

Brian is the treasurer of the Society of Mining Engineers Student Chapter and spends many of his weekends working at the school's San Xavier underground mine. He has had summer work experience at ASARCO's Ray Unit. [ ] COLORADO WINNER MARK ANDREW NORRIS Colorado School of Mines Golden, CO The winner from Colorado, Mark Norris, attending the Colorado School of Mines, is a mining engineering major from Eaton, Colorado. Mark is active in varsity swimming, intramural sports, and Army ROTC Pathfinders and Pershing Rifles. Mark is a co-designer of the Clear Creek County, Colorado, abandoned mine hazard rescue team plan though an introductory engineering course at Mines. [ ] MONTANA WINNER MARK J. BREN Montana College of Mineral Science & Technology, Butte, MT The winner from Montana, Mark Bren, attending Montana Tech, is a mining engineering major from Butte, Montana. Mark is an excellent student and active in the student chapter of the Society of Mining Engineers. He has worked at a gold mine in Montana, in the Earthquake Studies Office at Montana Tech, and a volunteer on the Neversweat and Washoe Railroad.

Mr. Chairman, Members of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute: It seems particularly appropriate that we come at this time to make a report on a phase of mechanical, mining of coal which had its birth in this region and was cradled and nurtured here until it assumed a lusty manhood that has made its presence felt in every coal field in this country and in foreign fields as well. More than twenty years ago shaker conveyors were introduced into the states covered by your Institute, and immediately, forward looking men saw that here were possibilities for the operator's dream of a continuous flow of coal from face to tipple, if this latest device could be made self-loading. The skill and ingenuity of men in the Rock Springs district quickly brought this about and in but a few short years .more coal was being loaded by Duckbills in this field than by any other means. Not content with this outstanding success, still other men dreamed of having this same Duckbill moved across the face under its own power, and so this same district produced the first power swing Duckbill.

President-elect Bob Wilson opened the business meeting at 9:30 a.m. He called on Shirl C. McArthur to report on the financial statement of the treasurer. He read the data and asked for its approval. A motion was made, seconded and approved. The Resolutions Committee was called upon to make its report. The following resolutions were submitted: (1) RESOLVED: WHEREAS, in the year since the last convention of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute, the Institute and the coal mining industry have suffered the loss through death of the services of: J. President Robert M. von Storch called the meeting to order at 9:00 A.M., and introduced the first speaker of the MANUFACTURERS' HOUR. D. M. Stromquist, Technical Representative, Coal Chemical Sales Division, United States Steel Corporation, Salt Lake City, Utah, presented a paper, "Ammonium Nitrate and Its Use as a Blasting Agent," which was illustrated with a number of slides. (See Index.) President von Storch introduced Kenneth J. MacLeod, Socony Mobil Oil Company, Denver, Colorado, who gave a short paper on "New Greases." Following are excerpts from Mr. MacLeod's talk: The recent advances in machinery, and their continuing development present a never ending challenge to the oil companies to develop new and better oils. Over the years, industry's machinery has been pressed to meet higher production rates, which has subjected the machinery to increased speeds, temperatures and pressures. Lubrications have had to be designed for a wider range of use. The entire industry has attempted to produce a good product for this extra-duty need. Most greases have contained lead in the past, and especially the food industry has had to be most careful in the use of this around food products.

Business meeting was opened at 9:30 a.m., June 28, 1967. President James Westfield asked that the meeting come to order. "We have some business to be taken care of this morning. First, we will have a report from the Auditing Committee." Mr. W. S. Landers read the report and said that it had been audited and approved and the motion was made and seconded that it be accepted. Oren F. Bridwell: We will close out the Institute. The President could not be here. So the Past President of the organization has been asked to take the chair. If there is no objection I will be glad to do so. We will proceed with the meeting. It seems to me we have a quorum. Minutes of last year's meetings are published in the Proceedings. If there is no objection we will dispense with the reading of the minutes. There being none we will dispense with the minutes. The Nominating Committee made its re- port last night. (See list of officers in front of Proceeding.) I move the nominations be closed. Mr. Bridwell: You have heard the motion and second. All in favor say "Aye." (Unanimous.) Motion carried. President Zakotnik opened the final session of the Institute at 9:30 a.m. Kenneth R. Herrmann of the Resolutions Committee presented the following resolutions to the group for their approval: RESOLVED: That the members of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute, in convention assembled, hereby ratify and confirm all official actions of the officers, the executive committee and other committees of the Institute between July 4, 1962, and the present time.

Thank you for inviting me to come here and be your keynote speaker. Texas also thanks you for being included as part of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute. We'll kind of think of Texas as Baja Rocky Mountains. I've always wondered why coal miners were the only people to go to the mountains in the summer time-and now I know why. The program committee should be given a big hand for selecting this RESORT. And the golf course is stimulating to say the least. This is a very beautiful location. I was asked to talk about CHALLENGES, OPPORTUNITIES and INNOVATIONS as they affect the coal industry. I am going to do that from a Texas perspective. But first, since Texas is the newest state to belong to the Institute, I would like to give you a little background on how our coal industry got started and where we are at today. The vast majority of our coal is called lignite-it has a little lower heating value than most other coals and ranks somewhere between buffalo chips and sub- bituminous. Lignite is found In three geological formations running Northeast to Southwest through South and East Texas. In-place reserves lying within 200 ft. of the surface total 14 billion tons. This slide shows the lignite formations with cur- rent mine operations colored in RED. Mines that are planned to be built in the next 10 years are shown in BLUE. Lignite was used mostly by settlers in Texas during the 1800s. It was used as a fuel to fire locomotives during the Civil War. Between 1900-1930, about 100 mines, mostly underground, were operating in Texas producing lignite for home heating and as a boiler fuel. Here are some slides showing underground access, [lie tipple used to process the lignite, and the underground workings. This is the "BIG LUMP COAL COMPANY" as shown here. The typical underground mine was 100-150 ft. deep and each miner produced 7-10 tons per day-all by hand. In 1926, the Texas Power & Light Company built the Trinidad Power Plant and began using lignite as a boiler fuel. The lignite was mined by the McAlester Fuel Company at the nearby Malakoff Mine. Here are some slides showing a stripping shovel at Malakoff uncovering lignite. The lignite was loaded into railcars in the pit for transport to the power plant. This is a picture of the Trinidad Plant which had two 20 MW units and one 32 MW unit. At the time, Trinidad was the largest power plant in the United States using lignite exclusively as a fuel. Trinidad operated until 1942 when it was converted to natural gas that was sold to the plant for 3 ½ ¢ per MMBT'U. The mine closed after having produced 7 million tons. Lignite was mostly forgotten about until 1953 when Alcoa started an aluminum smelter. Our Company formed a subsidiary called Industrial Generating Company to operate the power plant that furnished electricity to the smelter. We also operated the nearby Sandow Mine that supplied lignite as a fuel to the power plant

Shields presiding. CHAIRMAN SHIELDS: Let us get started, gentlemen. We are late now. From the looks of this agenda we are going to have a busy forenoon. The first item on this program is a talk on "The Second Underground. Gasification Experiment at Gorgas, Alabama," by Mr. James L. Elder.

The Chair earnestly hopes our discussion of valuable papers which have been prepared so painstakingly by our members and friends of the Institute will assist us in the solution of problems common to our industry. The reading of the minutes will be the next order of business. For your guidance it has been customary in the past to dispense with the minutes on motion from the floor, inasmuch as the minutes are printed. May I have a motion to that effect? The coal stripping project of the Edna Coal Company in Routt County, Colorado, near Oak Creek, is not greatly different than many other such projects in the United States-with two rather significant exceptions. The project is at an altitude of approximately 8,000 feet, and the topography is that characteristic of mountainous terrain. The first exception-that of high altitude-makes year round operation a challenge. The second exception-that of rugged topography makes the haulage of materials a difficult task.

The membership of the corporation shall be divided into three classes, consisting of active members, life members and senior members, who shall have such rights, privileges and qualifications as these bylaws may provide.
