Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine feasible roasting methods for the removal and the recovery of germanium, cadmium, and lead as enriched fractions from sphalerite concentrates. The two types of roasting processes studied were: (1) Batch, with a stationary bed, and (2) continuous, with a suspended bed, Results indicated that either method gave satisfactory metallurgical recoveries} but the continuous process is recommended because of inherent advantages. Final products were enriched fractions that could be treated by conventional methods for production of metallic germanium, cadmium, and lead. In the batch process, the concentrates were placed in a large tube furnace and heated at 1,080° C, an average of 3 hours. During the heating period, inert, reducing} or sulfur-laden gases were passed over the stationary charge to convey the sublimed metal sulfides from the hot portion of the tube to a lower temperature condensing zone at the end of the tube, where the metal sulfides were collected on baffles and recovered. In the batch and fluidizing roasting processes alike, the gases passed over or through the charge and served only as carriers for the sublimates and as suspension media in fluidization roasting. Since both processes depended on the volatilization, at relatively high vapor pressures, of the sulfides of germanium, cadmium, and lead, it was imperative that very little oxygen come in contact with the charge to alter the sulfide minerals. Germanium has a high affinity for oxygen, but in this instance it was buffered by being in solid solution in zinc sulfide.

The objective of this project was to perform a preliminary study to determine the desirability/practicality of burying the communication cables in underground mines in order to protect then from the effects of fires and explosions We conducted discussions with Government and industry specialists on the physics of mine fires and explosions, mine disaster fighting, rescue, and investigation activities, and on nine operations. In addition we examined published experimental work and selected detailed NSHA accident reports on fires and explosions in underground mines. We found the overall desirability /practicality of cable burial must be regarded at this time as highly questionable, because of its benefit limitations to special sceneries, its practical operational shortcomings, and the availability of alternative cable protection options.

The practice of using doors to control main ventilating currents in bituminous-coal mines is common throughout the industry. When doors are erected in pairs to form air locks, they are usually accepted as satisfactory by both State and Federal coal-mine-inspection agencies. A review of the contributing factors in recent methane ignitions showed that interrupted ventilation (often caused by doors latched open, destroyed, or damaged) was the principal cause of methane accumulations that subsequently were ignited.

The effect of indium on the solid solubility of calcium and of silicon in magnesium was studied using metallographic, X-ray diffraction, and electrical resistivity techniques. The addition of 2 weight-percent or more of indium reduced the solid solubility of calcium in magnesium by forming a compound containing indium and calcium. Indium additions have no perceptible effect on the solid solubility of silicon in magnesium.

Solvent extraction techniques were used to determine the extraction sequence of yttrium and the rare-earth elements in an amine solvent extraction system. Single-stage extraction with Primene 81-R resulted in separation factors of 3.8 between yttrium and dysprosium and 25 between yttrium and cerium. Yttrium was concentrated in the aqueous phase. EDTA and DTPA, as aqueous phase counterextractants, enhance separation factors in mine-rare-earth sulfate systems. Yttrium separation from heavy rare-earth elements exhibits marked sensitivity to the position of yttrium in the selectivity scale of the rare-earth elements with the sequestrants. Yttrium-ytterbium separation is more effective with EDTA, whereas yttrium-dysprosium separation is more effectively increased with DTPA.

A technique of seismic refraction data analysis has been developed in which a digital computer is used to generate a two-dimensional model representing a layered-earth depth interpretation. Travel times are picked on seismic records by the human interpreter. These times, together with shot point and geophone locations and refraction layer control information, are submitted to the computer on punched cards. A first approximation delineation of each refraction horizon is obtained by a computer adaptation of the delay-time method. The approximation is then tested and improved by the computer through the use of a ray-tracing procedure in which ray travel times computed for the model are compared against field-measured travel times. The model is subsequently adjusted in an iterative manner so as to minimize the discrepancy between computed and measured travel times. The Fortran program is listed in the appendix of the report together with instructions for preparing data cards and examples of results.

This report summarizes the work performed by the Bureau of Mines on the development of analytical procedures for determining metallic and interstitial impurities in high-purity tungsten. Fourteen published methods and seven unpublished methods are briefly described. Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, in microgram to higher quantity levels, can be determined by several methods. Trace levels of 29 metallic impurity elements can be determined by optical spectrography, X-ray spectrography, and other instrumental methods.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes several fault locators and methods, including time domain reflectometers, a frequency domain reflectometer, tone generators, an infrared method, the Murray loop method, and high-voltage "click" methods. The Bureau of Mines has been conducting research into these methods for several years, to improve mine safety and facilitate production through rapid, safe location of trailing-cable faults. The problems encountered in practical applications are discussed, and schematic diagrams of several instruments fabricated by the Bureau are presented. Since no present single method of locating trailing-cable faults is universally applicable, a kit composed of several of the more promising fault locators is advisable.

The estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1990 exceeded $1,501.5 billion in terms of current (1990) dollars, or almost $1,160 billion in terms of constant 1983 dollars. This latter figure was 0.3% below the 1989 level and about 3.9% below the record high to date of $1,207.1 billion 1983 dollars set in 1980. Table 1 provides the latest available revised time series of the estimated value of world crude mineral production both in terms of 1983 constant dollars and in terms of current dollars. It also provides one of the two statistical bases for this estimation, this being the data on the value of production of a group of key commodities that was compiled for and published in the authoritative French language mineral industry periodical, Annales des Mines, for selected years up to 1983.1 It should be stressed that the values just discussed and those presented in the tabulation are for crude minerals only, and by no means reflect adequately the role of the entire mineral industry in the world economy. These figures represent only the value of mineral materials as they are mined or otherwise extracted from the earth. They do not reflect the value added to these materials through downstream processing within the facilities commonly accepted as mineral industry plants. That is, value added through beneficiation of ores, smelting, refining, and similar processing is not included in these figures. Comprehensive world data on the value added by such processing are not available; however, a conservative estimate of the total value of pro-cessed output from mineral industry plants derived wholly from primary (newly mined) materials would be on the order of about $2,780 billion constant 1983 dollars or $3,600 billion in terms of 1990 dollars.

FOLLOWING the rapid recovery of previous years, the U.S. economy continued the upward trend and moved forward moderately and sporadically during the first half of 1962. There was a slow-down in the recovery rate, which was especially notable in the third quarter. The economy recovered in the fourth quarter, and by the end of 1962 the gross national product amounted to $555 billion, a new high, 7 percent above that of 1961. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all achieved new peaks, but unemployment continued high and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to us~ its full potential; 1962 was a good year, but not good enough. During 1962, all industrial production climbed from the low in January to a high in late summer which lasted through the fall, and declined slightly at yearend. Mining production followed this pattern closely and most sectors were approaching record highs. Most minerals gained in value and volume of production. The steel-associated minerals group was the only exception, and it sustained a small net loss. The nonfuel minerals industry opened the year at a high level, maintained this high level until late summer, with the peak in May, and drifted downward toward the end of the year. The gains recorded by nonferrous metal mining partly offset the loss of ferrous metal mining, resulting in a small gain for metal mining as a whole. The importance of recovering more oil from known petroleum reserves has placed increased emphasis on the application of secondary-recovery methods. It is hoped that these reports will stimulate interest in improved waterflooding techniques, thereby discouraging premature abandonment of oil leases. A previously published report4/ described the highly successful results of waterflooding in the Weir sand in eastern Kentucky. A more recent report5/ evaluated the results of waterflooding in Roane County, W. Va. (See fig. 1.) Two waterflooding projects have been operated in Pleasants County, W. Va. (fig. 2), one by the Dearborn Oil & Gas Corp. in the Cow Run sand near Calcutta, McKim and Washington districts, and the other by George C. Schoonmaker in the Maxton sand at Bens Run, Union district. This report report describes the waterflood operation near Calcutta, W. Va.

This report is a comprehensive summary of the results of the propagation measurements program conducted for the US Bureau of Mines under Contract H0366028. Data was gathered in the MF frequency range from a cross sample of six mines representative of the industry having typical wireless requirements. From the raw data which was gathered, a logical method of data reduction is presented which culminates in a set of average attenuation characteristics for all mines visited. These characteristics define a typical MF wireless system when the communication range requirements are known. Direct through-the-earth propagation and the range enhancement mechanism due to coupling on and off conductors are evaluated and related to the planning of a typical wireless MF communications system.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a research study of the geochemistry of the Smackover Formation to determine what geochemical relationships are useful in exploration for and production of oil and gas. Samples of oil, gas, brine, and rock were collected and analyzed. The oilfied brines were analyzed by methods recommended by the American Petroleum Institute and by tentative methods of the American Society for Testing and Materials. The crude oils were analyzed by Bureau of Mines methods; the gas, by Bureau of Mines methods; and the rocks, by wet-chemical, atomic absorption, and neutron activation methods. The results were correlated and interpreted, and several geochemical relationships useful in exploration and production were found. These include the type and class of brine, organic constituents in the brine, redox potential, in situ temperature and pressure of brine, degree of sulfate and carbonate saturation of brine, and halide concentrations in the brine.

A satisfactory mean: of beneficiating a Brazilian phosphate rock was developed in a mineral-dressing-research study by the Bureau of Mines. High-grade concentrates well ever the specified minimum grade of 70 percent tricalcium phosphate, were produced, with goad recoveries by agglomerate tabling and flotation. A lower gads but usable secondary product was recovered by sedimentation of the minus-200-mesh fraction of the ore. The ore wan representative of an extensive deposit recently discovered near Recife in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, which will be exploited in a plant planned to eventually produce at the rate of 500,000 tons of concentrate annually. Although Brazil has been reported to Lave a substantial reserve of phosphate rock,3/ the country has never been more than a small producer of this commodity. From 1945 to 1950 the highest production of phosphate rock attained in Brazil amounted to 10,421 tons. Production in 1949, the most recent year for which figures are available, was 4,553 tons.4/

High-purity lanthanum metal was prepared by electrolysis of La003 in a LaF3-LiF-BaF2 bath at 950° C. The requisite bath temperature for the deposition of molten metal was maintained by supplying the heat as current directly to the electrodes. A current efficiency of about 60 percent was obtained. The lanthanum nodules contained carbon and oxygen as major impurities. The total impurity content was from about 0.1 to 0.2 percent.

Drift mining, according to California mining terminology - and it is distinctly a California development - is the blocking out and extraction (breasting) of the auriferous gravels of an ancient buried stream either through tunnels, inclines, or shafts; it is one of the minor divisions of the larger classification known as placer mining. The contribution of each of these divisions and of lode mining to the gross production of gold in California totals as follows:3 [ ] The total amount of gold recovered from the placers of California from 1848, when Marshall discovered the precious metal in the mill race at Coloma, to 1928, was $1,226,515,404. The same period saw a total gold production from all operations of $1,823,562,360.

The Bureau of Mines for a number of years has been carrying on an investigation of properties of crude petroleum from producing, fields in the United States and the Western Hemisphere, and has published a series of reports on these fields, including oil fields of Oklahoma2. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory, has undertaken a study to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), hold up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSRs in the seventh phase of testing from May 1999 to August 2000. The SCSRs were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator. The results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their approved inspection criteria, perform satisfactorily. The deployed CSE SR-100s, however, exhibited significantly higher inhaled carbon dioxide (CO2) levels than new units, as they did in the previous two phases. Several Draeger OXY K-Pluses that rattled when shaken were found to have potassium superoxide (KO2) particles throughout the breathing circuit, including the mouthpiece. Draeger investigated the problem and developed a shake test to detect damaged units. The durations of new Ocenco M-20s were statistically significantly longer than those of deployed units, although only by 2 min.

Expenditures to advance scientific technology in general reached an all time high in 1965 with some $22.2 billion estimated to have been allocated by government and industry. Federal Government expenditures were estimated at $15.4 billion, with almost 90 percent of the funds devoted to programs involving defense, atomic energy, and outer space efforts. With this massive effort in the United States and a very impressive effort elsewhere in the world, there is little wonder that many new metallurgical developments were announced in the technical press during the year. No effort has been made to cover all aspects of the industry, but a few of the developments are described in this chapter.

Consider a set of points, some of which are anomalous (larger than a specified cutoff value), located on a plane. Whether some or all of these points are clustered to form one anomaly or more or, alternatively whether these points are scattered at random, may be investigated by measuring perimeters of convex hulls. A convex hull is the smallest convex polygon that will encompass a group of points. (Examples of convex polygons are triangles, rectangles, and all other regular polygons.) A set of anomalous points is selected and the perimeters of the convex hulls of this set and all its subsets are measured and compared with tabulated values of perimeters for each subset size. For a given subset size consider those perimeters which are less than the tabulated perimeter. If the number of convex hulls is greater than the maximum number expected by chance, then the chance that any one of the observed-hulls-is a nonrandom cluster is the ratio of the observed number to the sum of the observed and the maximum number expected by chance. Otherwise, the points are evidently not clustered. If many sample points are anomalous, an alternate model defines various configurations of contiguous points and compares the observed number of configurations per unit area with the expected number. Applications are discussed in several fields of geology and geochemistry-including geochemical exploration surveys and heavy mineral spatial distributions--as well as in mining (dust control) and medical geography.
