To determine the torque-load relationship for SIB-inch (nominal)-diameter roof bolts, the Bureau of Mines tested 5 makes of expansion shells and 2 types of bolts (regular and high-strength) in 2 sandstone and 2 shale mine roofs. Unused flat-steel bearing plates in as-received condition were used in these tests. The relationship between torque and load was found to be approximately 50 pounds of load per foot-pound of torque for both the regular and high-strength bolts. This relationship is valid up to 130 foot-pounds for the regular bolts and up to 175 foot-pounds for the high-strength bolts. A torque of 130 foot-pounds on a regular bolt will produce a load of 6,150 ± 1,910 pounds 90 percent of the time, and a torque of 175 foot-pounds on a high-strength bolt will produce 8,050 ± 2,750 pounds 90 percent of the time. Above these values, the torque-load relationship tends to be erratic due to binding between the bolt and plug threads. Binding causes excessive torque to be expended in producing torsion in the bolt rather than tension. This torsion adversely affects the yield load of the bolt. Therefore, the installed torques should not exceed the 130-and l75-foot-pound values. A statistical analysis of the data showed that the torque-load relationship was not significantly affected by the type of bolt or expansion shell unit but might have been affected by the type of rock.

Bastnasite concentrate was processed to recover total rare - earth content and obtain high - purity ceric nitrate . Reaction of the concentrate with 45 percent caustic soda for 1 hour at 180 ° C in stainless steel vessels resulted in 99 - percent conversion to rare - earth hydroxides . A drying step followed by solution in nitric acid produced a tetravalent cerium fraction amenable to extraction with TBP . Single- stage separatory funnel experiments resulted in 90 -percent recovery of ceric nitrate at a purity of 99.9 percent . Fractional extraction in pressure - bubbler columns resulted in 98.5 - percent recovery of 99.5 -percent - pure ceric nitrate .

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines report, proposed narrow-vein and longwall mining concepts using drill-split technology (described in part 1 of this series) and in situ liner concepts (described in part 2 of the series) are combined and applied conceptually to environmental problems. Proposed applications deal with (1) acid mine drainage (AMD), (2) solid waste disposal, (3) site remediation, and (4) pollution prevention through innovative industrial design. For control of AMD from abandoned hillside mine workings, it is proposed that source veins be re-mined, processed for residual values, then backfilled using an impermeable compound backfill mix. For solid waste disposal, "vertical landfills" are proposed, consisting of trash-backfilled underground rock quarries. Vertical landfill activities take place in in situ lined containments that geohydrologically isolate the mining-backfilling activities. Site remediation through the creation of in situ underliners, for the capture of toxic leachates, and pollution prevention through the underground storage of toxic, flammable, and explosive materials in in situ containments, are proposed.

"Procedures for particle size analysis on respirable dust from coal mines have been evaluated. Using respirable dusts dispersed in a laboratory dust chamber, size distributions measured using cascade impactors have been compared with the results of a variety of laboratory sizing methods performed on samples collected on filters placed side-by-side with the impactors. The laboratory techniques included centrifugal sedimentation, laser diffraction/scattering and automatic particle counting. The general agreement among the various methods was very good, with systematic differences which can be attributed to the different definitions of size used. Simple conversion factors have been obtained which can be used to transform the laboratory data to equivalent aerodynamic sizes.Similar comparisons have been made on samples collected in underground coal mines. Again, the results are in quite good agreement although small discrepancies were observed in· some cases. These have been attributed to some degree of agglomeration in the airborne dust, leading to slightly coarser apparent distributions in the impactor samples INTRODUCTIONA primary goal of mine ventilation is the control of airborne dust, especially in the ""respirable"" size range, typically defined as finer than about 5 to 10 µm. It follows that determination of the amount and characteristics of the respirable dust is an important factor in evaluating the performance of ventilation systems. Particle size information on airborne dust in mines is commonly obtained by in- situ measurements using cascade impactors. However, these tend to be inconvenient for routine data collection and the alternative approach of collecting samples in the mine, on filters for example, and returning them to the laboratory for detailed analysis is very attractive. Questions have often been raised, on the other hand, as to the appropriateness of this approach. How well · do such laboratory methods describe the distribution of aerodynamic diameter of the airborne dust particles in the mine environment? The purpose of the work described in this paper was to evaluate some laboratory sizing methods and to compare the results of such measurements with the size data obtained by the direct, in-situ method."

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed a new technique for bonding strain gauges to rock bolts. These instrumented bolts are used to determine load at intervals along the length of the bolt so that reliable, consistent measurements for the design of support systems can be obtained. In this Information Circular, this technique is described in detail and should result in improved miner safety in underground mines.

A German coal planer was put in operation in the Keystone mine of the Eastern Associated Coal Corp. , Keystone , W. Va . , in August 1960 . At present , the planer is mining in the fourth panel . The blocks of coal mined were 340 by 1,900 feet in panel 1 , 340 by 1,660 feet in panel 2 , 590 by 1,900 feet in panel 3 , and panel 4 , currently being mined , is 590 by 1,900 feet . Almost one- half million tons of coal have been mined from these four panels . An 11 - man crew handles the complete planer operation and produces an average of 500 tons of clean coal per shift . Self - advancing hydraulic props are used to support the roof over the entire face . Roof control and action on all of the panels has been highly satisfactory . During periods of extreme pressure , some additional support is required in the tail entry where evidence of weight from the retreating longwall extends about 200 feet outby the face . The time lost from production by moving equipment between panels has been reduced steadily . The move from panel 3 to panel 4 required 5 days , but it is believed that even that time could be reduced .

"INTRODUCTION For a number of years the bureau of Mines has been engaged in the detection, recording and interpretation of earth- and air-transmitted disturbances, man-made and natural, related to mining operations. For the measure¬ment of such disturbances, special equipment was developed (1, 2, 3, 4, 8) 3/ and results of the measurements have been reported (5, 6; 7,9).In general, the ranges of amplitude end frequency of vibration encountered and recorded in the earth-transmitted disturbances were 0.00005 to 0.1 inch and 5 to 5,000 cycles per second; in the air-transmitted disturbances, pressures ranging from 0.001 to 100 pounds per square inch and 0 to 20,000 cycles per second were recorded.One characteristic of the earlier tests was that either the arrival time of the disturbance to be recorded was predictable or the recording speed was slow enough so that the record covered extended periods of time (for example, 4 hours). As the investigations continued, it became apparent that a recording device was required that would respond to transient vibrations arriving at indeterminate times and at the same time provide a permanent record of displacement or acceleration versus time on a scale that would permit the analysis of waves having frequency components up to 10,000 cycles per second. A film or paper speed of 720 inches per second was found to be adequate, as this provides approximately 3/4 inch of record for each 0.001 second."

The geology, mining, beneficiating, types of products, and costs in terms of percent of total costs and of labor, power, and supplies of two crushed-limestone operations in Madison County, Iowa, are described in this paper. The operations are basically similar, differing in refinements in mining, product types, and markets. The operations are comparable as to personnel and as to weighted costs in terms of percent of total costs and in terms of man-hours, power, and sup-plies. The waste-to-stone stripping ratio is 1 to 0.8 at both operations, the powder factor is 0.29 pound of explosives per ton of stone, and daily production is 95 tons per man-shift. Both companies use crawler-mounted diesel shovels for loading, truck transportation, wagon drills, and dry screening.

A central requirement for using simulation models is the need for retrospect testing to validate experimental conclusions. Acceptance of a model by managers and safety practitioners is more likely to depend on its tested performance in-the field rather than on the underlying logic or the validity aspects of the model itself. It is here that simulation bridges the gap between theory and useful design procedures. The original version of the rail haulage sub-assembly was success¬fully tested in the field (Sanford, 1969). However, the case studies that were described here involved single-stage haulage and restricted jobtypes from UGMHS. Since this report together with Volume VI (Production Subsystem) describes extensive changes and modifications to the rail haulage sub-assembly and UGMHS, field tests were necessary to verify both the rail model and the linking concepts to the Produc¬tion Sub-system. Mine Description The candidate mine selected for model verification works the 6 1/2 foot Pittsburgh seam. Shaft openings are used for manways and ventilation and a dual compartment slope for materials handling. In the bottom half of the slope, a hoist with track handles supplies and equipment. In the upper half, a 42 inch belt conveyor travelling at 450 fpm moves coal from a rotary dump to the surface. The immediate roof is shale with the first 12 inches taken during development mining. About 4500 raw tons are produced daily from seven face units and one spare working three shifts. At seven of the sections,

To develop effective noise controls for continuous min-ing machines (CMMs) to reduce worker noise exposure. Background Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is an occupational illness caused by chronic exposure to excessive sound levels. For underground coal mine workers, NIHL continues to be a serious health issue. Analysis of hearing loss data suggests that by retirement age, 70%?90% of U.S. coal mine workers will have a hearing impairment. Operated in the confined spaces of underground mines, large industrial mining equipment often produces sound levels that can be harmful to workers. Of all equipment used in underground coal mining operations, CMMs account for the most noise overexposures. To reduce the occurrence of noise over-exposures, engineering noise controls must be developed for the CMM.

Future applications of seismic holography to "seismically transparent phase objects," such as rock inclusions, fracture zones, liquid-filled cavities, etc., will require techniques to improve the poor image contrast generally characteristic of these objects. Although conventional phase-contrast enhancement techniques could be used, these methods involve additional optical elements such as quarter-wave spatial filters. Owing to the anticipated practical difficulties of properly alining such optical devices and properly locating poorly defined image planes and filter planes, this approach is not considered to be well-suited to the case of seismic holograms and their laser reconstructions. Results similar to those achieved with spatial filters may be obtained without filters by specially processing the seismic hologram data. The new process, which is an extension of Gabor's subtraction holography, achieves an improvement in contrast by an interferometric technique. The process involves adding a ?before" hologram without an object present to a 90° phase-shifted "after" hologram with the object present. Then, the combination is reconstructed with a laser or by computer. Not only is the image contrast improved in such processed holograms, but the images are also phase-contoured. In general, the latter feature is not to be expected when conventional phase-contrast enhancement techniques are employed. The new technique is experimentally verified by examining computer-generated synthetic seismic holograms rather than by examining actual seismic field data. However, results of this study are directly applicable to real seismic data and should prove useful in future applications of seismic holography.

The Bureau of Mines is collecting and analyzing representative samples of crude petroleum from all the producing fields in the United States , and the results are being published in a series of reports that are preliminary to the issue of a bulletin covering the entire survey . The bureau has recently completed a survey of crude oils from the Kansas district . In all 27 samples were collected and analyzed , under the direction of A. W. Ambrose , chief petroleum technologist of the Bureau. Valuable assistance was received through the cooperation of oil companies operating in the State , especially the Prairie Pipe Line Co. , and the Empire Pipe Line Co. The present report issued as Serial 2322 , on the Kansas crudes , forms the fifth of the series . Of the four previous papers , the first ( No. 2202 ) deals with crudes from the Eastern fields of the United States , the second ( No. 2235 ) with crudes from the Rocky Mountain district , the third ( No. 2290) gives additional data , cn viscosities and pour tests , for the crudes from these two fields , and the fourth ( No. 2293 ) covers the fields of northern Texas , northern Louisiana , and Arkansas . The details of the methods of collecting samples , making laboratory tests and interpreting results , have been discussed in these earlier reports . It has also been pointed out that the only adequate method of interpreting analyses of crude oils is to compare the individual reports with the analysis of some crude oil that is familiar to the operator . For this reason , no comprehensive discussion of the results of the Kansas survey is attempted, although some general statements may be made .

Effective recycling or disposal of flue dusts is a continuing problem for copper, brass, and bronze smelters. Over 300,000 short tons (st) of dust is generated annually by U.S. secondary copper, brass, and bronze smelters. The Bureau of Mines has developed an alkaline leach method for recovering metal values from copper converter flue dust containing zinc, tin, lead, and copper. The dust was leached with a hot solution of ammonium chloride and ammonium hydroxide to solubilize ZnO. All of the tin (as Sn02) and the metallic copper, lead, and zinc, as well as possible insoluble compounds of each, report to the residue. Dissolved copper and lead salts are removed from the leachate by cementation with granular zinc. Zinc oxide is precipitated by diluting the leachate with water. The tin-rich (9.8 pct) residue has a ready market. The cement product is recyclable to the smelting operation. The ZnO is at least 97 pct pure and has potential marketability.

An investigation was made on the use of magnesium for the direct reduction of rutile to make low-cost, offgrade titanium which could be upgraded to an acceptable grade of metal by electrorefining. Reductions made with charges containing magnesium chloride under hydrogen yielded products with oxygen con-tests close to the theoretical equilibrium composition. Two reduction products were made from rutile for use in electrorefining amenability tests: (1) a product from reduction in an inert atmosphere which contained 88.9 percent titanium and 4.42 percent oxygen, and (2) a product from reduction in a hydro-gen atmosphere which contained 92.5 percent titanium and 2.40 percent oxygen. Reduction products obtained under both of these conditions were amenable to electrorefining.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes some recent results on the sensitivity of various experimental explosive systems using ammonium nitrate (AN) as the oxidizing agent. The sensitivity survey included drop-weight and friction testing and sensitivity to initiation by projectile impact and a No.8 blasting cap. It was found that certain types of AN prills can result in cap-sensitive mixtures when combined with No.2 diesel fuel (Fa); prilled AN mixed with nitromethane also result in cap-sensitive mixtures. Mixtures of AN prills and neat 1-and 2-nitropropane were not cap-sensitive, and the use of powdered or grained aluminum in AN-FO did not adversely affect the sensitivity except possibly to increase its sensitivity to friction.

Lake Superior region. The advantages and disadvantages of WHIM separation in relation to other separation methods, the most recent innovations in WHIM flowsheet design, and the role of mathematical models in process optimization are discussed.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, "I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated" (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

In overview, the world's mineral industry in 1989 registered gains over its 1988 performance, but these gains were by no means as pronounced as had been those of 1988. The traditional statistical measures of mineral industry performance, namely production, trade, and consumption levels, reflected significant growth in most industry sectors from crude material extraction through the gamut of down- stream processing. Growth in market economy countries generally exceeded growth in the centrally planned economy countries as a result of a variety of causes that will be covered subsequently, but even among the centrally planned countries there were some upturns. In contrast to these measures of the soundness of the industry, the situation for nonfuel mineral and metal prices was less satisfactory than in 1988, and low crude oil prices continued as a problem for the all-important petroleum sector, despite some gains during the year. The oil price situation mitigated against price increases for competitive fuels. Although this was unfavorable for fuel producers, it remained advantageous to consumers, including nonfuel mineral producers, processors, and transporters. Thus it cannot be viewed as a negative factor for the whole of the global mineral industry. Global crude mineral output value was estimated at nearly $1,420 billion in current dollars, an increase of 9% over the 1988 level, and an increase in current dollar terms for the seventh consecutive year. Measured in terms of constant dollars, however, adjusting for inflation, the increase was only 4.7% compared with the 1988 level. Despite the prolonged growth trend, the 1989 crude mineral output value level was still 3.2% below the record high set in 1980, which was $1,467 billion in terms of 1989 dollars.

The Bureau of Mines has under development on a technical scale an electrolytic process for treating oxidized ores of zinc , using caustic soda as an electrolyte . Whereas the Bureau process can alternately make either solid zinc or zinc dust , the following paper , from the Ludwigshafen research laboratory of the well -known I. G. Farbenindustrie , A. G. , of Germany, deals only with production of zinc dust from sodium zincate solutions and may well serve as introduction to the subject for American metallurgists . The Bureau of Mines pioneered in the idea ; a study on laboratory scale by H. J. Morgan and 0. C. Ralston was made early in the First World War, and published in Transactions of the American Electrochemical Society . The Eckardt paper , translation of which follows , goes more thoroughly into the preparation of electrolytic zinc dust , and later publications of the Bureau of Mines will deal with broader details and application of the idea to treatment of lowgrade ores and metallurgical intermediates , which is the point where Eckardt left off . 4 The Eckardt report became available through operations of Field Information Agency , Technical ( FIAT ) of the Office of Military Government for Germany (US ) , which made bibliofilm copies of the files of internal technical reports of many of the German industrial establishments , Eckardt's report is dated April 1939 and was taken on FIAT Microfilm Reel MM 106 , frames 82-101 , which is on file as Publication Board Document 41411 in Office of Technical Services of the U. S. Department of Commerce , Washington , D, C , Eckardt points out that the normal source of zinc dust is the blue powder of the zinc retorts , which decreases in volume every year owing to technologic improvements in zinc smelting. "This laboratory bas developed a sensitive electro-optical method to quantify the initial rate (R) and total amount (MAX) of superoxide (02) produced by single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM). The method uses a microscope-based TV system to visualize PAM in culture, and to video record the images during the time the cells produce 02. MAX and R are calculated from measurement of temporal changes in optical density in the images due to precipitated diformazan formed by the reaction of O2-, produced by each PAM, with nitroblue tetrazolium present in the culture medium. To date, values of Rand MAX, measured due to adherence of PAM to the dish, have been compared to values obtained when quartz, coal mine dust (CMD), and kaolin . were added to the medium (in vitro). Rand MAX have also been calculated for PAM lavaged from animals exposed to quartz and CMD in the WVU Inhalation Facility. Presently, experiments are being done using which will permit PAM to be restirnulated by different dusts to help establish a dose response relation~ p and a means to study the role of lung surfactant on modifying the acute toxicity of inbaled dusts. Ultimately, this methodology should provide useful insight into establishing the role of 02 in PAM dysfunction due to inhalation of dusts, and in lung diseases such as pneumoconioses. INTRODOCTIONPAM are free cells found in the lungs which protect the lungs by removing foreign debris and bacteria. This is accomplished, in part, by the process of phagocytosis, whereby foreign matter is internalized into vesicles known as primary phagosomes. Phagocytosis also involves the chemical breakdown of inhaled dusts and the killing of microbes. Detoxification is aided by the respiratory burst, which is a metabolic response of the cell to foreign substances, that results in the production of highly reactive oxidizing agents from the partial reduction of extracellular oxygen to superoxide (02) at the surface of the plasma membrane. Superoxide undergoes either spontaneous or enzyme catalyzed dismutation reactions to form hydrogen peroxide (H202) and subsequently hydroxyl radical (OH•) and singlet oxygen (02 t ). However, while these oxygen metabolites aid in the killing of microbes they also may destroy endogenous tissue. For example, 02 has been linked to the aging process and to many diseases including emphysema, diabetes, and cancer.'' Therefore, a better understanding of the production of 02 is extremely important since an abnonnally low production could result in damage by inhaled dusts and bacteria while an abnormally high production could result in direct damage to the lung tissue by the phagocytes. Inhalation of respirable sized mineral dusts, such as quartz (silica), coal mine dusts (CMD), and asbestos, results in various pulmonary disorders. PAM are thought to play an important role since evidence suggests that the first step in fibrogenesis is an interaction of dust particles with PAM. Generally, in vivo exposure of animals to mineral dusts results in increased respiratory burst activity, migratory patterns, phagocytic behavior, and secretory potential of PAM, and for this reason these have been implicated to be pivotal events in the pathogenesis of pulmonary diseases.1 In addition to stimulation of resident PAM, an influx of monocytes into the lung and/or production of new macrophages generally occurs in response to fibrogenic dust inhalation. Further, PAM may attract and stimulate fibroblasts, which normally synthesize proteins and collagen during rep~ of tissue, by secreting chemoattractants and enzymes. Thus, PAM may be involved in pulmonary disorders through failure or partial loss of their defensive capability, or indirectly, through release of other mediators."
